Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday said that India is moving towards becoming a leader in <keyword id="6319489" type="General" weightage="70" keywordseo="6g-technology" source="Orion">6G technology</keyword>, adding that the future is here and now. <keyword id="2238662" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="pm-modi" source="Orion">PM Modi</keyword> said this while inaugurating the <keyword id="4254251" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="Indian-Mobile-Congress" source="Orion">Indian Mobile Congress</keyword> (IMC). "We are not only expanding 5G in the country but also moving in the direction of becoming leaders in the area of <keyword id="7268171" type="General" weightage="70" keywordseo="6g" source="Orion">6G</keyword> technology. Everyone knows what happened during the 2G (referring to the spectrum allocation scam during the UPA regime). During our government, 4G was expanded but there was no stain on us. I am confident that India will lead the world in 6G technology," he said. The Prime Minister added that whether it is telecom, technology, or connectivity or whether it is 6G, AI, cybersecurity, semiconductors, drones or space sector, the future is going to be very different. "Within a year of the launch of 5G, nearly four lakh 5G base stations have been working today. They are covering 97% of the cities and more than 80% of the population," Modi said. We are proud that the world is using Made in India mobile phones now," PM Modi said. India has become an exporter from a net importer, he added. "India has reached 43rd position in mobile broadband speed from the previous rank of 118," PM Modi said, adding that 2014 (when NDA came to power) is not a date, it is 'badlav' (change). Referring to various measures of the government, the Prime Minister said that access to capital, access to resources and access to technology is the government's priority. During the programme, PM Modi awarded 100 '5G Use Case Labs' to educational institutions across the country.

 A day before Vodafone Idea posted India’s largest ever quarterly net loss of ₹50,000 crore, its stock had crashed 20%. The stock which has been taking a beating ever since Supreme Court gave a verdict which went against them in the aggregate gross revenue case, it has little to lose after yesterday’s loss announcement. The market capitalisation of Vodafone-Idea was just about ₹8,476 crore ($1.2 billion) before trading opened on Friday (November 15). That is barely a tenth of the ₹₹44,150 crore that it owed Department of Telecommunications which it has to pay p in three months. "We have accounted for the estimated liability of Rs 27,610 crore related to licence fee and Rs 16,540 crore billion related to spectrum usage charges up to September 30, 2019, including the interest, penalty and interest thereon of Rs 33,010 crore," the company said on a filing on the stock exchanges. Added to that, the British parent of the company Vodafone Plc also went deep into red because of its flailing India business. Two days back, the CEO of the parent Nick Read said that India business might be liquidated if the government does not offer any relief over the spectrum dues. In late October, both Bharti Airtel and Vodafone Idea have lost a decade old case on the definition of AGR dues. While the telecom companies had claimed that the definition should not include non-telecom earnings, DoT said it should. Supreme Court also agreed with DoT leading the sector into a fresh crisis, amongst the many it is battling. Bharti Airtel on Friday announced the closure of its agreement with Reliance Jio Infocomm to transfer the 'Right to Use' of Airtel's 800 MHz spectrum in three circles to the Mukesh Ambani-led firm. Airtel said in a statement it has received Rs 1,004.8 crore (net of tax) from Jio for the proposed transfer. Besides this, Jio will assume future liabilities of Rs 469.3 crore relating to the spectrum, the statement added. In a late evening statement, Jio said: "With this trading of right to use spectrum, RJIL will have 800 MHz band spectrum footprint of 2 x 15MHz in Mumbai circle and 2 x 10 MHz each in Andhra Pradesh and Delhi circles, thereby further enhancing network experience of its customers." Reliance Jio Infocomm Ltd (RJIL) said it has paid total consideration of Rs 1,183.3 crore (inclusive of taxes) to Bharti Airtel and has assumed deferred payment liability with net present value of Rs 469.3 crore. Jio's pact with Airtel to buy the spectrum in 800 MHz band was announced in April this year and marked the first such deal between the two telecom giants. Airwaves come in different bands which support different propagation characteristics for the transmission of voice and data. For instance, lower bands like 800 MHz and 900 MHz support good indoor coverage while higher bands like 2300 MHz have a good carrying capacity. The airwaves are also sold in quantities measured as MHz. Spectrum auctions, held earlier this year, had raked in winning bids of over Rs 77,800 crore for 855.6 MHz of spectrum. Billionaire <keyword id="3820" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Mukesh-Ambani">Mukesh Ambani</keyword>'s Reliance Jio spent the most in the auction, picking up 488.35 MHz spectrum in bands such as 800 MHz, 1800 MHz and 2300 MHz for over Rs 57,100 crore. In the auction, Bharti Airtel won the right to use spectrum, the total value of which is about Rs 18,700 crore. For <keyword id="1553175" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Vodafone-Idea">Vodafone Idea</keyword>, the value of spectrum bought in auctions was pegged at Rs 1,993.4 crore. There were no takers for spectrum in 700 MHz and 2500 MHz bands in the last auctions. As per latest data available from telecom regulator Trai, the Indian telecom market had presented a picture of sharp contrast in May with Bharti Airtel losing a staggering 46.13 lakh wireless subscribers even as rival Reliance Jio added 35.54 lakh mobile users. Overall, the Indian mobile market shed 62.7 lakh users in May. In fact, both Airtel and Vodafone Idea had suffered massive subscriber losses in the month. Airtel lost 46.13 lakh mobile users and ended the month with a subscriber base of 34.8 crore. Vodafone Idea -- which is currently in the grip of an existential crisis -- had seen its mobile subscriber base shrink by 42.8 lakh users in May, to 27.7 crore users.
