At the heart of this shake-up stands to be a freshly minted airline, Akasa Air. Ever since its public debut in July, Akasa has become the most talked-about airline in the country. And on November 16, it <a href="https://www.reuters.com/world/india/indias-akasa-air-orders-72-boeing-737-max-jets-2021-11-16/">placed</a> a $9 billion order for 72 Boeing 737 MAX jets. The airline could potentially lift up the entire Indian aviation segment, which has been grappling for several years, industry analysts say.Unlike <keyword id="11898285" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="airlines" source="Orion">airlines</keyword> that ground their fleets in capital Delhi or financial hub Mumbai, Akasa's fleet stands to be mostly based in the Indian tech capital of Bangalore. While Akasa's exact routes have not yet been announced, they are expected to reach less-travelled destinations at less expensive fares.Backed by billionaire investor Rakesh Jhunjhunwala – nicknamed <a href="https://www.forbes.com/profile/rakesh-jhunjhunwala/">India's Warren Buffett</a> and Big Bull for his smart investments — the carrier aims to be the resurrector of a turbulent domestic market in Asia's third-largest economy.But Jhunjhunwala and Akasa are entering the aviation industry at a historically difficult time: The pandemic is far from over, and the market is crowded, plagued by collapsing carriers, and difficult to turn a profit in.Jhunjhunwala did not respond to multiple requests from Insider for comment for this story.<h2>Room for growth</h2>Until the turn of the decade ending 2010, air travel was luxury only affordable for the affluent in <keyword id="11892747" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="india" source="Orion">India</keyword>.A country of about 1.4 billion people, India has about<a href="http://www.knowindia.net/aviation7.html"> 650 passenger jets</a>. Domestic airlines carried 144 million flyers in 2019, according to the regulatory body <a href="https://www.dgca.gov.in/digigov-portal/?page=jsp/dgca/InventoryList/dataReports/aviationDataStatistics/handbookCivilAviation/HANDBOOK2018-19.pdf&amp;main4252/4205/sericename">Directorate General of Civil Aviation.</a> By comparison, the US (population 333 million) has over <a href="https://www.faa.gov/air_traffic/by_the_numbers/">5,000 civilian aircraft</a>, while China (population 1.44 billion) operates <a href="http://www.xinhuanet.com/english/2019-07/18/c_138237617.htm">close to 3,700</a> passenger jets.Today, trains remain the preferred mode for the long-distance journeys of the masses in India. In the 12 months <a href="http://indianrailways.gov.in/railwayboard/uploads/directorate/stat_econ/Annual-Reports-2019-2020/Year-Book-2019-20-English_Final_Web.pdf">ending March 2020,</a> Indian trains ferried over eight billion travelers.But as India's middle class grows and competing airlines keep the price of domestic airfare low, air travel is slowly becoming a viable mode of transport for more people. Delhi aims to unveil <a href="https://twitter.com/MoCA_GoI/status/1357015867448455169">over 200 new airports</a> across the vast country in the next four years and is rapidly expanding the existing airports. Prime Minister Narendra Modi's administration expects civil aviation to play a crucial role in its ambitious goal of making <a href="https://www.narendramodi.in/pm-modi-s-aspirational-call-for-5-trillion-dollar-economy-in-5-years-547486">India a $5 trillion economy </a>by 2024."We can expect huge growth in the next five to 10 years," Sanjay Kumar, chief strategy and revenue officer of IndiGo, told Insider of the Indian aviation market. IndiGo is India's market leader in domestic traffic <a href="https://www.ibef.org/industry/indian-aviation/showcase/indigo">with 55% share.</a>"The growing middle-class population will start traveling as the Americans or Chinese do. We've so far not seen this [in India] at all," Kumar added.<h2>A volatile market</h2>Until the second half of 2018, India was home to the fastest-growing aviation market in the world, with passenger numbers ballooning.Growth nosedived in 2019 due to factors including crew shortage, taxes on jet fuel, and unsustainable business models.At the heart of India's spiraling airline crisis was <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/jet-airways-shuts-down-after-running-out-of-money-2019-4">the collapse of Jet Airways</a>, the country's oldest and first successful private airline. Mounting debts, poor acquisitions, and cheaper prices offered by rivals killed the 26-year-old Jet Airways.The Indian aviation market is so volatile that about <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_defunct_airlines_of_India">50 players have shut shop</a> in the past three decades and changed billionaires into millionaires.And this was all before the pandemic decimated the industry.But a troubled industry also means abundant talent in the market for hire, low asset costs, and weakened competitors, factors that could play a role in Jhunjhunwala's favor.<h2>A market dominated by low-cost carriers</h2>Unlike the aviation markets of the western world, where the segment is multi-layered and caters to a wide range of travelers, carriers in India need to keep a close watch on ticket costs. About 80% of <a href="https://www.dgca.gov.in/digigov-portal/?page=jsp/dgca/InventoryList/dataReports/aviationDataStatistics/handbookCivilAviation/HANDBOOK2018-19.pdf&amp;main4252/4205/sericename">the market share</a> in India is cornered by low-cost carrier models (LCC), which make a profit through volume by selling seats at cheap rates.Six large airlines dominate the domestic skies in India: IndiGo, SpiceJet, GoAir (which rebranded as GoFirst), AirAsia India, Vistara, and Air India. While Vistara and Air India are classified as no-frills carriers, the rest operate as LCC.Unlike all other existing market players, Akasa is an ultra low-cost carrier (ULCC), which means every little space inside the plane – from paper cups or luggage bins — is for sale for advertising. Further, Akasa can cut back on all expendable costs and fly more hours a day while keeping the seat fares separate from all other related services like food. It's basically like the Spirit Airlines of India.Akasa is expected to launch operations by early or mid 2022, if the speculation in the industry is proved right. Akasa has been busy hiring industry veterans including Vinay Dube, the former CEO of Jet Airways, and Aditya Ghosh, the former CEO of Indigo. <a href="https://centreforaviation.com/data/profiles/airlines/akasa">Regulatory approvals </a>are on track.Yet, the fate of Akasa depends on more than a billionaire backer and experienced leadership. Other variables at play in the airline's success include how it manages its fleet composition, distribution models, and the choice of flying destinations.<a href="http://www.knowindia.net/aviation7.html">Airbus dominates</a> the Indian skies: The A320 family makes up 70% of all passenger aircraft in the country.The advent of Akasa means an opportunity for American planemaker Boeing to make a breakthrough in a crucial market.Akasa hopes to operate a fleet of 70 aircraft in four years, ​​Jhunjhunwala told <a href="https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2021-07-28/indian-billionaire-investor-plans-70-planes-for-new-airline">Bloomberg</a> in a television interview in July. Boeing's market outlook, meanwhile, predicts there will be demand for 2,200 commercial jets in the next two decades."In India, domestic traffic is leading the recovery. To be successful, Akasa must get the combination of these correct, industry experts said."Akasa's bet is on the fragility of one or more carriers and as a well-capitalized new entrant, it may very well be able to gain a strong foothold," said Satyendra Pandey, managing partner at India-based aviation services firm AT-TV.Rival carriers are bound to match Akasa's fares from day one of its operations, Pandey said – which means it'll be entering a profitless growth environment. A careful assessment of the market should incorporate both business and behavioral trends, Pandey said."Force-fitting western frameworks just does not work. Getting this wrong has meant that even extremely well-funded airlines have consistently failed to turn a profit and witnessed continuous margin deterioration. Levers that worked pre-pandemic may not quite work the same," Pandey added."If the ULCC model is implemented, Akasa Air may expand the overall market by stimulation due to low airfares," said Manvi Hooda, chief of consulting and research at the aviation consulting firm, CAPA India."India remains an under-penetrated air travel market. Given India is a value-sensitive market, low airfares can significantly stimulate the market," said Hooda.

CNBCTV-18 reported that the secretary at the department of investment and public asset management (DIPAM) confirmed the withdrawal of its decision of sharing revenue from convenience fees. Shares of IRCTC recovered after a sharp fall on Friday morning trade on the announcement of sharing half of its <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/business/corporates/news/government-asks-irctc-to-share-half-of-its-convenience-fees-revenue/articleshow/87338962.cms">convenience fees </a>with the government. On October 28, after the railway company informed stock exchanges of the government’s decision, many investors had criticised the move on social media portals. Shares of Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation recovered after losing more than 25% in the early trade on announcement of government asking IRCTC 50% of revenue coming from service charts on e-ticketing, i.e., convenience fees, with the government. The move came as a big shock to investors as it meant IRCTC would have to share a chunk of its revenue with the government. In FY21, IRCTC earned ₹299 crore from this segment, which is almost 40% of its revenue from operations of ₹783 crore. At 11:11 a.m. shares of the company were trading 4% lower at 875.95 per share. IRCTC stock recovers losses as government reportedly withdraws decision on convenience fee revenue share

Star Health Insurance IPO subscribed only 79% on last day; issue extended till 7 p.m.

New Delhi, Jan 21 () Assets worth over Rs 107 crore of a Kolkata-based firm have been attached in connection with a money laundering probe linked to an alleged bank fraud case, the ED said on Tuesday.
 The action has been taken against directors of the company Fair Deal Suppliers, and land and building in Coimbatore, an office building, a farm house, bungalow in Ahmedabad and seven fixed deposits have been attached under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA).
 The total value of the properties is Rs 107.73 crore.
 The Enforcement Directorate (ED) said in a statement that the firm and its directors Ram Prasad Agarwal, Narayan Prasad Agarwal, Pawan Kumar Agarwal and Saurabh Jhunjhunwala and others were booked by it after studying a CBI charge sheet filed against them for "defrauding" a UCO Bank flagship corporate branch in Kolkata.
The probe found that Fairdeal Supplies Ltd and its directors availed various credit facilities and foreign letters of credit (FLCs) from UCO Bank "fraudulently" by submitting inflated and fabricated stock statement, the ED alleged. 
 It said the company "did not route the sale proceeds of coal imported under the FLCs through the bank, resulting in accumulation of letters of credit." 
 "The funds were diverted for other purposes, thereby defrauding the bank to the tune of Rs 231.95 crore," the ED said.
Directors of the company "directed" buyers of coal to remit sale proceeds of the imported coal to other accounts, it said.
 "The buyers of coal deposited the sale proceeds in the accounts other than accounts of Fairdeal Supplies Ltd. From these accounts, the funds were further diverted to acquire assets," the agency charged.

Bank fraud: ED attaches over Rs 107-cr assets of Kolkata firm

New Delhi, Mar 12 () Local high networth individuals and leading financial institutions have evinced interest in putting money in crisis-hit Yes Bank, analysts said on Thursday. There is lot of interest in putting money into Yes Bank because now the real value will be unlocked as the stock price has already reached Rs 26 apiece, IIFL Securities Director Sanjiv Bhasin said. There is a mixed bag of local investors, mutual funds, AMCs,HNIs alongside ICICI and HDFC, he said further. "There is ICICI, HDFC, then there are individual HNIs like Radhakishan Damani (Dmart), Rakesh Jhunjhunwala and some mutual funds," Bhasin added. Yes Bank's administrator Prashant Kumar, a former SBI executive, has said that the lender is in talks with various investors to raise capital. Yes Bank was superseded by the RBI last Thursday under an administrator after it failed to raise capital. The troubled lender will announce its third quarter results for December 2019 on Saturday and analysts expect that there will be deterioration in bank's asset quality. "I think there will be deterioration in the asset quality, slippage would be higher, their core equity capital is expected to go below what RBI mandates," said an analyst on the condition of anonymity. The bank may post a loss of Rs 1,000 crore during October-December 2019-20 quarter, an analyst commented. Emkay Global Financial Services said: "We expect Yes Bank to report a loss of Rs 778 crore, mainly due to recognition of heavy corporate NPAs from its stress pool including ADAG NBFC, some real estate acounts and pending NPA provisioning for FY19." Emkay said it believes that SBI stake buy in Yes Bank will provide immediate capital support in the phase 1 of restructuring and also ensure continued support in the future capital raise with SBI being an anchor investor. "Apart from capital support, SBI holding stake in the bank will soothe depositors, as otherwise Yes Bank has been witnessing sharp deposit run down. However, we believe apart from capital infusion, bank will have to strip-off assets to further release capital and also rake up internal liquidity to pay-off depositors, where SBI can provide a pivotal role in buying these assets," it added. Bhasin said it has to be seen how much asset quality deterioration will be there on the results day. "Once we know that...recapitalisation, you know there is Rs 20,000 crore coming as far as capital (is concerned) and Rs 30,000 crore as deposits to allay all investors' negativity, so that is all presumption." As per the bank's reconstruction plan, SBI has committed Rs 2,450 crore investment through an acquisition of 49 per cent equity in Yes Bank, which remains in moratorium till April 3, as bank's capital condition has jeopardized. New Delhi, May 13 () Channelising a major chunk of the stimulus package for vulnerable segments like micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) and non-bank lenders will go a long way in protecting jobs and reviving country's economic growth, experts said on Wednesday. Measures like emergency credit line of collateral-free Rs 3 lakh crore from banks and non-banking financial companies (NBFCs) and a Fund of Funds with a corpus of Rs 10,000 crore will help the sector protect jobs and revive country's economic growth which is impacted the lockdown imposed to contain the spread of COVID-19 disease, . Experts also said that reduction of TDS/TCS rates by 25 per cent for non-salary payments to residents will leave more money in the hands of professionals and businesses. Deloitte India Partner, Leader (Government and Public Sector) Arindam Guha said, "Channelising a significant part of the government financing support for vulnerable segments like MSMEs and NBFCs/ housing finance companies (HFCs) in the form of credit or investment guarantees to achieve a multiplier effect and also limit the actual outflow to the extent of default." He said there is a clear focus on structural reforms and ease of doing business as it is evident from the measures around increasing the investment and turnover thresholds for MSMEs to enable them to grow bigger. Guha also lauded steps like advising the state governments and Real Estate Regulatory Authorities to leverage force majeure provisions for providing an additional 6 months to real estate companies and exempting them from the need to obtain a fresh registration certificate or renegotiate contracts with their buyers. Another significant measure was allowing contractors involved in highway/infrastructure construction to avail a standstill period of 6 months without any penalties, he added. JLL CEO and Country Head (India) Ramesh Nair said that the fundamental of any economy is employment generation and the Government of India has made the right interventions by providing the requisite support to MSMEs. The revitalisation of MSMEs will play a major role in the overall revival of the economy, he said adding, this in turn is expected to have a positive impact on the consumer sentiment, which has an important bearing on the real estate sector. "These measures provided to MSMEs will also go a long way in protecting jobs and ensuring income continuity. This in turn will have a positive bearing for potential homebuyers especially in the affordable and mid segments," Nair said. Snapdeal co-founder and CEO Kunal Bahl said these measures will help the MSMEs get back on their feet as additional collateral and guarantee-free loans, equity funding options, better access to government procurement, e-market linkage and higher thresholds are strong enablers. KPMG in India Chairman and CEO Arun Kumar said MSMEs are critical for employment preservation and growth and firing up the MSME sector is the surest way to accelerate job creation. "The finance minister's schemes announced today will provide relief for MSMEs that need immediate succour for their survival as well as help those enterprises that need a fillip to grow. Expanding the definition of MSMEs and introducing new thresholds based on turnover while elevating the investment ceilings for each segment are welcome," Kumar said. The broad focus on enhancing liquidity is timely, including the measures for NBFCs, HFCs and MFIs (micro-finance institutions) and those for the power sector to ease the situation of distribution companies and cash-strapped independent power producers, he said adding that the measures to ease liquidity for lenders and businesses will make a tangible difference. Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Wednesday announced about Rs 6 lakh crore package comprising Rs 3 lakh crore of collateral-free loans for small businesses and a Rs 30,000 crore lifeline to non-bank and housing finance companies as part of measures to help the economy tide over disruptions caused by the coronavirus lockdown. The minister also announced cut in tax rate on non-salary payments by 25 per cent, support to companies to meet statutory liability on employees' retirement fund, provided a Rs 90,000 crore bailout to cash-starved electricity distribution companies and gave construction firms up to six more months to complete the government projects. Shardul Amarchand Mangaldas &amp; Co Partner Pooja Ramchandani said PF contribution is calculated at 12 per cent of basic wages + dearness allowance + retaining allowance. "The announcement on provident fund reliefs is a positive one. The percentage of PF contribution has been reduced to 10 per cent. Prior to this, the rate of 10 per cent was applicable to establishments with less than 20 employees, sick industries, establishments where losses exceed networth, jute, beedi, brick, coir and gum industries," she said. PwC India Chairman Shyamal Mukherjee said the profound measures to boost liquidity and enable MSMEs to take centre stage in making India self-reliant and play a significant role in the government's vision of Make in India. Nangia Andersen LLP Director Sandeep Jhunjhunwala said the reduction of TDS and TCS rates on non-salaried payments by 25 per cent will set free additional cash in the hands of the vendors and help increase liquidity in the economy. This reduction is estimated to release about Rs 50,000 crore in the hands of people, he said. Consulting firm AKM Global tax Partner Amit Maheshwari said the TDS rate reduction will leave more money in the hands of deductees, especially professionals where the TDS rate is as high as 10 per cent.
