French security researcher claims Twitter's desi rival Koo is 'leaking' personal data of users

New Delhi, Homegrown Twitter-like platform <keyword id="3518161" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="koo">Koo</keyword> has garnered over 10 lakh new users in just one week, surpassing the 40 lakh-figure in nearly 10 months of its arrival, as Twitter was caught in crosshairs with the Indian government over its direction to remove nearly 1,400 controversial accounts.<br /><br />Koo, a favourite among several Union ministers, including IT Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad who is at the forefront of the government's war with Twitter, has reached 4.2 million users within no time.<br /><br />According to data analytics platform Statista, as of January 2021, the micro-blogging platform Twitter had an audience reach of 69.3 million users in the US.<br /><br />Japan and India were ranked second and third with 50.9 and 17.5 million users, respectively.<br /><br />The fast-growing vernacular platform Koo describes itself as a personal updates and opinion sharing micro-blogging service.<br /><br />The app won the Atmanirbhar App Innovation Challenge held in August last year and Prime Minister <keyword id="6354477" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Narendra-Modi">Narendra Modi</keyword> encouraged Indians to use the Koo app in his 'Mann Ki Baat' speech too.<br /><br />However, Koo also found itself in the midst of several controversies including a data leak row and Chinese investment.<br /><br />Koo Co-founder and CEO Aprameya Radhakrishna denied that there was any data leak.<br /><br />"Koo is an India registered company with Indian founders. Raised earlier capital 2.5 years ago. Latest funds for Bombinate Technologies is led by a truly Indian investor 3one4 capital. Shunwei (single digit shareholder) which had invested in our Vokal journey will be exiting fully," Radhakrishna said in an earlier investment.<br /><br />Koo has raised $4.1 million as part of its Series A funding.<br /><br />Infosys veteran Mohandas Pai's 3one4 Capital is the latest addition to the investors on board, according to the company, and <keyword id="144381" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Accel-Partners">Accel Partners</keyword>, <keyword id="1397792" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Kalaari-Capital">Kalaari Capital</keyword>, <keyword id="592779" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Blume-Ventures">Blume Ventures</keyword> and Dream Incubator also participated in the round.<br /><br />"We have got more love than we expected. How to land a job with Blackstone, Apollo, KKR, and other private equity titans

<ul class="summary-list"><li><keyword id="6355311" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="japan">Japan</keyword>'s neighbors are not happy about its call to release contaminated water from <keyword id="281102" type="CITY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Fukushima">Fukushima</keyword> into the sea.</li><li><keyword id="1334" type="COUNTRY" weightage="60" keywordseo="China">China</keyword> and <keyword id="5565" type="COUNTRY" weightage="60" keywordseo="South-Korea">South Korea</keyword> say the water from the wrecked nuclear plant could affect food safety.</li><li>Hashtags trending on Chinese social media are calling for a boycott of Japanese seafood in protest.</li></ul><p>Japan has <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/japan-fukushima-nuclear-disaster-wastewater-sea-2021-4">decided to release contaminated water accumulated at the wrecked Fukushima nuclear plant into the Pacific Ocean</a> - but its neighbors are not happy. </p><p>Tokyo announced this week that it would gradually release more than 1.2 million tons of radioactive water - enough to fill 500 Olympic-sized swimming pools.</p><p>Japan has been storing the water in tanks following the 2011 nuclear plant meltdown, which followed a devastating earthquake and tsunami that devastated northern Japan's coastal regions. </p><p>South Korean and Chinese governments have voiced concerns that the radioactive water from the nuclear plant could affect food safety and have grave ramifications on marine life in the area. </p><p>According to <a href="https://english.kyodonews.net/news/2021/04/6789babe1165-breaking-news-fukushima-water-release-in-line-with-intl-safety-standards-us.html">Kyodo News</a>, civic and environmental groups in South Korea held rallies in Seoul yesterday, holding up placards near the Japanese embassy in Seoul to protest the move. Protesters toted banners with pictures of salmon steaks, prawns, and mussels with radioactive symbols slapped over them, shouting slogans and calling for Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga to reconsider his decision. </p><p>"The sea is not a trash can. The Japanese government has no right at all to dirty the waters," one person at the rally said to Kyodo <keyword id="6355005" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="news">News</keyword>. </p><p>The decision spawned more than a million comment threads on Chinese social media platform Weibo (the Chinese version of Twitter) in the last 24 hours.</p><p>Hashtags including: "Fukushima water could destroy half the Pacific Ocean in 57 days" and "Japan is inflicting a disaster on other nations" surfaced on the platform. Some Weibo users also called for a mass boycott of Japanese seafood, citing worries of "high radioactive content" in fish imported from Japanese suppliers. </p><p>Notably, fishing unions in Fukushima have also objected to the Japanese government's move, arguing that releasing the water into the ocean would <a href="https://www.japantimes.co.jp/news/2021/04/13/national/fukushima-water-seafood/">ruin a decade of work</a> that the fishing industry has invested into restoring its reputation. </p><p>The Japanese government assured its neighbors that it would filter the contaminated water before release. </p><p>But that statement on its own has not inspired confidence, considering previous scandals that the Tokyo Electric Power Company Holdings (TEPCO) -  the corporation involved in handling the water - has been involved in. TEPCO <a href="https://www.japantimes.co.jp/news/2018/08/19/national/alps-system-fukushima-no-1-plant-failing-remove-tritium-toxic-cooling-water/">admitted in 2018 </a> that radioactive material had not been filtered out of the water it processed, despite the company maintaining for years that it had. </p><p>Reuters reported that South Korea summoned Koichi Aiboshi, Japan's ambassador to Seoul, to formally express objections against the Japanese government's decision. </p><p>South Korean media outlet <a href="https://news.sbs.co.kr/news/endPage.do?news_id=N1006279849&amp;plink=TWEET&amp;cooper=TWITTER=TWITTER">SBS</a> reported on Wednesday that president Moon Jae-in is considering filing a formal complaint with the <keyword id="6356001" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="international">International</keyword> Tribunal for the Law of the Sea - an intergovernmental organisation established by the UN.</p><p>Meanwhile, Koo Yoon-cheol, chief of the South Korean office for government policy coordination, said during an emergency vice-ministerial meeting that the country's government would "take all necessary steps" to keep its citizens safe. </p><p>"The decision can never be accepted and would not only cause danger to the safety and maritime environment of neighboring countries. It was also made unilaterally without sufficient consultations with our country, which is the closest neighbor to Japan," Koo said. </p><p>"We will strongly demand Japan take concrete steps to ensure the safety of our citizens and prevent any damage to the maritime environment," he added. </p><p>Koo also called for transparency regarding how the contaminated water is handled and asked for regular inspections to be carried out. </p><p>Separately, Chinese state media <a href="http://www.xinhuanet.com/english/2021-04/13/c_139878454.htm">Xinhua</a> reported a statement from the Chinese foreign ministry, which slammed the move to release the nuclear water as "extremely irresponsible." </p><p>"The Fukushima nuclear accident is one of the most serious in the world. The leak of large amounts of radioactive materials has had far-reaching implications on the marine environment, food safety, and human health," Chinese foreign ministry spokesman Zhao Lijian said. </p><p>The Chinese also called the Pacific Ocean "mankind's shared property" while strongly urging Japan to "fulfill its international obligations, and duly respond to the serious concerns of the international community, neighboring countries, and its own people." </p>

Research published by the National Association of Colleges and Employers in 2020 found that 70% of the more than 540 interns surveyed said they'd landed an internship through cold outreach.</p><p>But how do you break the ice and make cold outreach feel, well, not quite so cold? Insider asked a top venture capitalist who got her start as an intern at JPMorgan Chase — and used effective email networking with people she didn't already know to help her get the gig in the first place.</p><p>It took about 150 emails in all, according to Amy Cheetham, a partner at Costanoa Ventures, an early-stage investment firm based in Palo Alto, California. <p><span></span><a href="http://dissenter.firedoglake.com/2013/05/29/imprisoned-cia-torture-whistleblower-john-kiriakou-pens-letter-from-loretto/">The letter</a> reveals a very interesting perspective of a trained intelligence officer - <span>Kiriakou</span><span> worked for the CIA from 1990 to 2004 </span>- co-mingling with a variety of common criminals.</p>
<p>Kiriakou,<span> 47, who pleaded guilty in October and began his sentence in February, begins the letter by saying that his imprisonment is "punishment for <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/cia-whistleblower-kiriakou-pleads-guilty-2012-10">blowing the whistle on the CIA's illegal torture program</a> and for telling the public that torture was official U.S. government policy."</span></p>
<p><span>Here are some of the highlights from his picture of prison life:</span></p>

<li><span>My cellmates include two Dominicans serving 24- and 20-year sentences for drugs; a Mexican serving 15 years for drugs, and a Puerto Rican serving 7 1/2 years for drug conspiracy; and the former auditor of Cuyahoga County, Ohio, who's doing a long sentence for corruption. They're all decent guys and we actually enjoy each other's company.</span></li>
<li><span><span>Of the white prisoners, most are pedophiles with personal stories that would make you sick to your stomach. The rest of the white prisoners are here for drugs, except for a dozen or so who ran Ponzi schemes. </span></span></li>
<li><span><span>Of the 1,369 prisoners, 40 have college degrees and six of us have master's degrees. The GED program is robust.</span></span></li>
<li><span><span>I'm a janitor in the chapel. I make $5.25 a month.<br /></span></span></li>
<li><span><span><span>It turned out that I had to get a copy of my formal sentencing documents to prove that I wasn't a child molester. I did that, and was welcomed by the Aryans, who aren't really Aryans, but more accurately self-important hillbillies.</span></span></span></li>
<li><span><span><span><span>[<span>One female <span>Corrections Officer</span></span>] stopped me and said, "Are you the motherf----- whose name I can't pronounce?" I responded, "Ki-ri-AH-koo." She said, "how about if I just call you F---face?"</span></span></span></span></li>

<p><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;"><span>Kiriakou goes on to explain why he gets along with each ethnic demographic in prison, saying: "<span>So far, so good.</span>" </span></span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;"><span>He also claims that Corrections Officers tried to get him into a violent confrontation with a Muslim inmate by telling him he was the uncle of the Times Square bombers, adding: "<span>Instead, we're friendly, we exchange greetings in Arabic and English, and we chat.</span>" </span></span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;"><a href="http://abcnews.go.com/Nightline/video?id=7499789">In a 2007 interview with ABC</a>, Kiriakou confirmed for the first time that Abu Zubaydah, a top Al Qaeda detainee, had been subjected to <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/libyan-man-describes-horrific-experience-of-being-waterboarded-by-us-troops-2012-9">waterboarding</a>.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;">In 2008 <span>Kiriakou confirmed that name of the chief of the CIA's <a href="http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2005/12/03/AR2005120301476_pf.html">Rendition, Detention, Interrogation (RDI) teams</a> to</span><span> </span>ABC<span> journalist Matthew Cole, and confirmed</span></span><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;"> the role of another CIA employee in classified activities regarding "black sites."</span></p>
<p>"He gave names with that expectation that they be contacted and may choose to speak about it," <span>Kiriakou's lawyer, Robert Trout, </span><a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/ex-cia-officer-given-30-month-jail-sentence-for-leaking-agents-name-2013-1#ixzz2UsCXkca3">said</a><span> when his client was sentenced</span><span>. "</span>Naively, he didn't appreciate that he could lose control of it."</p>
<p><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;"><span>Kiriakou is the first <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/justice-department-closes-inquiry-into-bush-torture-2012-8">and only person</a> linked to the controversial "enhanced interrogation" program to be prosecuted.</span></span></p>
