As a <a href="https://organizedforgoodatx.com/">certified master KonMari consultant</a>, I've worked in more than 100 homes and have spent more than 1,500 hours helping people let go of what no longer brings them joy. </p><p>To become a certified consultant, you must employ the approach in your own home, attend a training course, complete a minimum of 30 hours of practice and help a client complete the method, then pass a final exam and an interview. Training can take anywhere from months to more than a year.</p><div type="image" title="NY 2019 Erin Mursch with Marie Kondo" height="1536" width="2047" msid="77655823" hostid="261"></div><p>Those who complete the KonMari Method in its entirety begin to see a major shift in their life and perspective. I experienced this myself when I employed the method in my own home in 2015. Now, as a <keyword id="9793829" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="konmari-consultant">KonMari consultant</keyword>, my first priority is to live a joyful life, and my second priority is to support my clients to do the same. </p><h2>7 to 7:45 a.m.: I wake up and go to the living room where I sit with Dewey, our dog.</h2><div type="image" title="Dewey Cuddles Erin Mursch" height="2313" width="3084" msid="77655827" hostid="261"></div><p>I usually sip on lemon water followed by coffee, while my husband Eric makes breakfast with fresh eggs produced by our five backyard chickens, which we've had for about a year. We eat breakfast in our small (but tidy!) home as we share our plans for the day.</p><h2>7:45 to 9 a.m.: We clean up after breakfast and take Dewey for a walk.</h2><div type="image" title="Dewey Walks2.JPG Erin Mursch" height="1440" width="1440" msid="77655829" hostid="261"></div><p>When we get home, my husband, who works for an educational tech startup in Austin, begins work in his "office," aka a bright corner of our living room, and I head to the backyard to feed the chickens and water the garden. Afterwards, I check emails, post to social media, and take care of business administration in my office, the second room in our home which also serves as our guest room and my yoga studio. </p><h2>At 9 a.m. most mornings, I practice yoga.</h2><div type="image" title="Yoga Inked Fingers Photography Erin Mursch" height="899" width="1199" msid="77655830" hostid="261"></div><p>I practice yoga several days a week (via Zoom), which helps me manage stress through the mind/body/breath connection. After class, I shower and dress for work. I pack my clean fabric facemask, apron, label maker, water bottle, and snack, and say goodbye to Eric and Dewey before leaving.</p><h2>11 a.m. to 2 p.m.: I meet with my first client of the day and get to work.</h2><p>When I arrive to my client's home, before ringing the doorbell, I put on my mask and greet the house with the palm of my hand for the 'home greeting' as it's called in the KonMari Method. Then I ring the bell and greet my client (sans hug or handshake thanks to COVID) and she updates me on her homework since our last session, which is usually continuing to sort something we began together, like a box of photos. I've been working with this client for 10 sessions, since late January. We take a moment to celebrate her progress, I offer some feedback, and we move on. </p><p>I put on my apron, equipped with Post-its, a Sharpie, and hand sanitizer, and we begin by gathering our chosen category of items into one place. Today's focus is sentimental items, so we gather bins of photos and mementos into her dining room to sort through. As we're sorting, she identifies war medals of her late father, her mother's crosses and prayer books, a silver baby cup and fork, miscellaneous documents, photos, journals, albums, artwork, and yearbooks. Once it's all sorted into categories (cloth items, books, documents and correspondence, miscellaneous artifacts, photos and media), we take a break for some water.</p><div type="image" title="Organizing photos with a client. Erin Mursch" height="3024" width="4032" msid="77655835" hostid="261"></div><p>I explain to the client that the sentimental category is the final one of the KonMari Method because it's the most difficult, so if she's feeling overwhelmed or uncertain, it's normal. Previous categories were as much functional as joyful, so she became practiced at determining each item's role in her life, thanking whatever no longer served its purpose. But sentimental items don't serve a functional purpose in our lives; their purpose is to help us understand our life story and recall precious moments. Each artifact represents an experience or a person who has been significant in our story. What story will be told, and which memories do we want best remembered? </p><p>After chatting, the client announces she's ready to get started. I share some suggestions:</p><ul><li>Remove photos from albums to review one by one</li><li>Sort by occasion, trip, chronologically, or by person you want to remember</li><li>Discard duplicates, out-of-focus shots, and people you don't recognize</li><li>Once in categories, one pile at a time, try to curate the "best of," to recall the essence of each experience, time, or person</li><li>Thank the photos that served their purpose and bid them farewell</li></ul><div type="image" title="Photo Sort2.JPG Erin Mursch" height="2048" width="1536" msid="77655837" hostid="261"></div><p>Before our session is over, we discuss her homework, confirm our next appointment, and cheers to her progress so far in processing her past and putting her life in order.</p><h2>2:30 to 3:30 p.m.: When I get home, I toss my mask and apron into the laundry.</h2><p>I take a shower, change clothes, and make myself a smoothie. </p><h2>3:30 to 4:30 p.m.: I meet with more clients over Zoom.</h2><p>I have a virtual session with a young couple to help them declutter and organize their books and media. I coach them through the process and provide guiding questions as they determine what to keep. I ask that they send me before and after photos, and text me if they get stuck.</p><div type="image" title="before and after book organization Erin Mursch" height="1238" width="1651" msid="77655841" hostid="261"></div><h2>4:30 to 6:30 p.m.: I spend time in my office following up on emails and phone calls.</h2><div type="image" title="Erin Mursch in her home office 3.JPG" height="1524" width="1525" msid="77655845" hostid="261"></div><p>I write some blog posts, touch base with the young couple from earlier via text message to check on their progress, and catch up on social media.</p><h2>6:30 to 7:30 p.m.: I make dinner and we catch up on our day while we eat.</h2><p>My husband is on evening dish duty (in truth I come behind him to wipe down the counters and place things how I like them).</p><h2>7:30 to 8:15 p.m.: We gather the eggs, and get the chickens inside the coop for the night. </h2><div type="image" title="Chicken eggs &amp; Blanche   Eric Mackintosh Photography" height="750" width="990" msid="77655848" hostid="261"></div><p>We also take Dewey for another evening walk and water the garden.</p><h2>8:15 to 10:00 p.m.: We like to wind down with an hour or two of Netflix (COVID life).</h2><p>I enjoy the lighter stuff like "Grace &amp; Frankie," "Queer Eye" and "Dead to Me," while my husband prefers the darker stuff like "Ozark," "Mind Hunter," "Russian Doll," and "You." We compromise.</p><p> I also enjoy reading in the evenings. Some favorites are Marie Kondo and Scott Sonnenshein's "Joy at Work," Glennon Doyle's "Untamed," Marie Forleo's "Everything is Figureoutable," and lately I've also been reading anti-racist works like "White Fragility" and "Me and White Supremacy" to educate myself and become a better ally.</p><h2>10:00 to 10:20 p.m. Before bedtime we have "tidy roundup."</h2><div type="image" title="Closet Inked Fingers Photography" height="738" width="984" msid="77655850" hostid="261"></div><p>We take shoes to closets, water glasses to the sink, and put other things away around the house. I'm certified in Marie Kondo's tidying methods and have been helping people declutter their homes virtually during the pandemic — here's what a typical day is like

But the demand for her services was so overwhelming that the side hustle started to take up all her free time. Kondo told herself, "Maybe I should make it into my life's work."</p><p>Kondo has a new book out, "<a href="https://www.amazon.com/Joy-Work-Organizing-Your-Professional/dp/0316497959">Joy at Work</a>," coauthored with the Rice University professor of management Scott Sonenshein. The book guides readers in organizing every aspect of their work life - desk, files, calendar, and professional network.</p><p>When we spoke last week, I asked Kondo how she'd advise someone who wasn't sure whether to go all-in on their entrepreneurial pursuits like she did. Her answers seemed at first like they came from an eye-rolly brochure for the <a href="https://konmari.com/">KonMari</a> method, Kondo's trademarked technique for organizing your space. Kondo recommended asking yourself, "What sparks joy" for you? You can start that process of introspection, she added, "by tidying your workspace."</p><p>Then I gave it a few seconds' thought. Kondo, I realized, was onto something. Something big.</p><p>If there's a theme to "Joy at Work" and to my conversation with Kondo, it's this: The best way to understand what you really want out of work and life is to examine how you're currently spending your time and money.</p><p>And that self-awareness is no small feat. It can be hard to separate yourself from your vision of the person you'd <em>like</em> to be and to see yourself objectively. But <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-to-be-self-aware-at-work-2017-4">psychologists say</a> that people who clearly understand their own passions and what motivates them are more successful.</p><p>To that end, you could ask friends and coworkers what they really think of you, or hire an executive coach to help you out. Those are probably good ideas. But a quick and dirty alternative is simply to go through your stuff.</p><h2>Your current behavior says a lot about what your goals are</h2><p>In Kondo's case, she didn't set a career goal for herself - become a full-time organizational consultant - and then rearrange her calendar so that she could transition away from the staffing agency. Instead, she saw how she was already behaving - spending all her free time on organizational consulting projects - and began to better understand her career goals.</p><p>"Tidying is essential," Kondo told me, "because it clarifies how you're spending time" right now. Kondo tidied her workspace in the more abstract sense, by taking a look at the appointments on her calendar.</p><p>In the book, Kondo shares examples of people who achieved that kind of clarity through more literal tidying.</p><p>Consider a KonMari client named Ken. When Kondo initially asked Ken about his ideal work life, he shrugged and said he'd probably like to leave the office earlier. Then Ken reviewed the pile of books that was languishing on his desk. Many of them were about self-development and how to find more passion in your work. Once he noticed that pattern in his book collection, Kondo writes, it "showed him that he longed to enjoy his job more and achieve self-fulfillment through doing his best."</p><p>I don't know Ken. But maybe he felt embarrassed about admitting that he wanted more fulfillment out of his work life. Maybe he thought that would be too hard to achieve. Maybe he felt he didn't deserve that satisfaction. Whatever the case, his insistence that he just wanted to spend less time at the office belied his behavior. Ken didn't need a therapist to tell him that - he just needed to take a look at his book collection.</p><p>Most of us know what this is like. I personally spend a lot of time buying tea and picking out meditation classes that I only sometimes drink and attend. As much as I talk about all the stories I want to write and people I want to meet, I guess what I really want is to relax.</p><p>When it comes to professional success, Kondo told me, it's important to be true to yourself. Success sits at the intersection of your strengths and your passions, she added.</p><p>That kind of self-knowledge could easily take a lifetime. Rather than a dreaded task, I see tidying as a celebration. It's an act of gratitude for the items that support you every day — and the first step to living the <keyword id="6360041" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="life">life</keyword> you've always wanted.</p><p dir="ltr">It is my hope that the magic of tidying will help people to create a bright and joyful future — especially during these uncertain times.</p><p dir="ltr"><strong>What's the biggest obstacle you've had to overcome in your career so far?</strong></p><p dir="ltr">There was a time when my schedule was so packed I was physically and mentally exhausted. This was in 2015, after I was named one of <a href="https://time.com/collection-post/3822899/marie-kondo-2015-time-100/">Time magazine's 100 Most Influential People</a>, and I was inundated with offers from around the world. I accepted as many as I could, seeing them as a great opportunity to share the KonMari Method™.</p><p dir="ltr">I was pregnant with my first child at the time, and the pressure took a toll on my mind and body. Sometimes I would burst into tears at the end of the day. Finally, I realized I couldn't go on like this — I can't teach others how to spark joy in their lives if I'm not experiencing it in my own. </p><p dir="ltr">Since I had that epiphany, I've learned how to say no and to delegate. I've also made it a point to prioritize joy in my life, especially when I'm busy. I deliberately schedule in time for things I enjoy or want to do. These help me to regain my inner balance so that I can return to my work refreshed and filled with positive energy.</p><p dir="ltr"><strong>I'm moving to a different apartment soon. Do you have any advice for me as I pack up my stuff?</strong></p><p dir="ltr">Tidying your current home is the most important thing you can do if you are <a href="https://konmari.com/marie-kondo-top-10-moving-tips/">preparing to move</a> — don't wait to do it until you're in your new space! </p><p dir="ltr"><strong>Some people like to hang onto objects because they feel throwing them out means wasting money. What do you have to say to them?</strong></p><p dir="ltr">I would challenge the premise that getting rid of something means wasting money — since you've already purchased the item, it's a sunk cost. For me, it's more important to ask why you would keep something out of a sense of guilt.</p><p dir="ltr">Discarding is not the point of the KonMari Method™, but it is an important part of the process because it provides an opportunity to learn from your past experiences. If you let go of a belonging you never used, it taught that you have no purpose for something like it in your life. Thinking deeply about each item you discard will affect how you live and acquire new things moving forward — which will help you save money in the long run!</p><p dir="ltr"><strong>You're famous for saying that people should eliminate anything that doesn't spark joy. What is it about money that sparks joy for you?</strong></p><p dir="ltr">Now that I live in the US, I mostly use my credit card — but when I Iived in Japan, facing all of my paper bills in the same direction and keeping my wallet tidy sparked joy!</p><p dir="ltr"><strong>How can I "Kondo" my finances?</strong></p><p dir="ltr">Before you begin tidying, it's important to imagine your ideal lifestyle — the kind of life you want to lead once your tidying festival is complete. For this exercise, I encourage people to visualize how they want to spend their time. You can do the same when it comes to tidying your finances.</p><p dir="ltr">First, think about how you want to spend your money; then, write down your current expenses and see how your spending lines up with your vision. Organize your finances by category for a comprehensive view. Whatever your financial goals, whether you'd like to give money to certain organizations or save for a new home, having a clear vision for the future — and a realistic grasp of the current situation — will help you to make decisions with confidence.</p><p dir="ltr"><strong>What's the best $50 you've ever spent?</strong></p><p dir="ltr">I recently took up gardening, and these <a href="https://shop.konmari.com/products/konmari-decor-niwaki-garden-secateurs-japanese-clippers" target="_blank" rel="noopener">garden secateurs</a> make me happy every time I use them. With no closets and too much stuff, the apartment was always a mess. A friend passed along Kondo's book, "<a href="https://www.amazon.com/Life-Changing-Magic-Tidying-Decluttering-Organizing/dp/1607747308">The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up</a>," and while we first started following it ironically, it soon became very serious. </span></p><p><span>We spent a week asking if every item in our apartment "sparked joy" and ended up filling several garbage bags worth of clothes and possessions that we brought to the local Goodwill. I won't say it magically made our tiny apartment perfectly tidy, but it did make it more organized and livable. <br /></span></p><p><span>When I decided to leave New York last year to <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/author/harrison-jacobs">travel the world for Business Insider</a>, I resolved to pack light: only a carry-on suitcase and a backpack.</span></p><p><span>That, however, was daunting: I had plans to <keyword id="6354692" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="Travel">travel</keyword> through a wide variety of climates and scenarios, f</span><span>rom Beijing's frosty early spring to Israel's oppressively hot summer, and scenarios from board room meetings with executives at <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/inside-vipkid-cindy-mi-and-3-billion-startups-teacher-community-2018-8">Chinese tech startups</a> to hiking the Atlas Mountains of Morocco.</span></p><p>As I packed, I continued to turn back to the principles of the KonMari method.</p><h2>Using the KonMari method to pack for a year of traveling</h2><p>To start with, I put everything that I was even <em>thinking</em> about packing into one central place and started organizing each item into its category: clothing, outerwear, shoes, work equipment (cameras, recorder, etc), cables and travel adapters, toiletries, and mementos. Then, I went through each category and asked myself the iconic Marie Kondo question: Does this spark joy?</p><p>I have to admit that when I asked myself that question, I was always asking myself another question underneath: Does it serve a purpose or function that I need? This is a vital question, particularly when traveling. Malaria pills may not exactly "spark joy," but they keep me healthy when traveling to sub-Saharan Africa.</p><p>That second question is useful when it comes to clothes. If a pair of pants that I am bringing "sparks joy" but doesn't serve any particular purpose, it's a reminder to think twice about packing it.</p><p>Once I combed through each category, narrowing down what I was bringing, it was time to pack.</p><p>Marie Kondo recommends organizing by category and <a href="https://www.chatelaine.com/home-decor/the-marie-kondo-decluttering-tips-we-swear-by/">making sure every item has a particular place or home</a>. I use the right side of the suitcase for clothing, the divider that sits on top for large notebooks and gifts, and the left side for my toiletries, shoes, and larger pieces of equipment like my camera's flash unit and a tripod.</p><p>My backpack, <a href="https://www.peakdesign.com/products/everyday-backpack?variant=9783969284140">Peak Design's 30L Everyday Backpack</a>, also makes it easy for me to put things in a designated place, thanks to its numerous pockets and zippers and its specialized "shelving" system, which divides the bag into three cubbies.</p><p>I use the bottom cubby for camera lenses, the middle for my glasses case and a small notebook, and the top cubbie (the largest) for my technology Dopp kit, the Peak Design Field Pouch, and my Fuji X-T3 digital camera.</p><p>Each of those spaces, in both my suitcase and my backpack, is further divided into pouches, bags, and packing cubes so I can find and inventory items quickly.</p><p>A perfect example is my technology Dopp kit. The kit works like a regular toiletries bag, but for electronic devices. I packed mine with all my travel adapters, cables, chargers, devices, and accessories. When I enter a hotel room, I know exactly where to go to get my devices charged. When I get on a plane, I just grab the kit and throw my backpack in the overhead compartment. The ease with which I can find exactly what I need sparks <em>a ton</em> of joy.</p><p>I've applied that philosophy throughout my carry-on suitcase and backpack. All of my clothes are in packing cubes - one for t-shirts and button downs, one for pants and shorts, and one for underwear, socks, and lounge-wear. I never had to rifle through my whole bag to find something. I just open the dedicated pouch.</p><p>It's the same for my toiletries bag, my specialized equipment bag (i.e. large camera charger, flash accessories, and audio recorder), and my field pouch (which is loaded with earplugs, medications, camera batteries, pens, and a small notebook).</p><h2>Marie Kondos' tips for folding clothes</h2><p>The last piece of the Marie Kondo puzzle is <em>how</em> she folds clothes, which is a bit special. Basically, using her <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lpc5_1896ro">special folding method</a>, all of your clothes sit upright in your bag so that it is easy to see what is in your bag and nothing gets wrinkled.</p><p>I have to confess that while I think her folding method is effective for maximizing space and protecting your clothing, I get lazy with it. I'm an organizer and always have been - but I'm also a pack rat, which is a minimalist's foil<em>.</em></p><p>Minimalism is a visually-appealing - albeit mentally-perplexing - trend. While it feels good to have possessions and own things, minimalists say it feels <em>even better</em> to own very few things, all of which you <em>need</em>, not just want.</p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">An </span><span style="font-weight: 400;"><a href="http://www.thisisinsider.com/inside-japans-extremely-minimalist-homes-2016-6">extreme form of minimalism is sweeping Japan</a>,</span><span style="font-weight: 400;"> where people following the guidance of figures like <a href="https://konmari.com/">Marie Kondo</a><span>, an organizing consultant and the author of <a href="http://tidyingup.com/">two best-selling manifestos on minimalism</a>, jettison the majority of their belongings and keep only the necessities.</span></span></p><p>Earlier this month, I tried my hand at a mild form of minimalism. I say mild because I didn't follow Kondo's precise rules of only keeping items that "spark joy," because frankly, my hair dryer doesn't spark joy, but it's practical. I figure I can work up to Kondo's high-level minimalism.</p><p>Still, I was more ruthless than I've ever been in going through my possessions and deciding what's truly worth keeping. I wanted to get a taste of this proverbial trend. And while Kondo and her books, in part, inspired me to consider minimalism, I in no way followed every step of her practice.</p><p>But what started as an enchantment with minimalism and an eagerness to hop on the bandwagon turned into a lesson in decluttering and minor shot to my ego.
