Jharkhand Government's ambitious project worth ₹2,500 crore, Konar Dam, collapsed within 14 hours of inauguration, destroying crops spread across 100 acres. The officials blamed rodents for the major breach developed in the canal, which caused extensive flooding across several villages. The state administration found rodents to pin the blame on. The Jharkhand irrigation project -- that initially started with an estimated cost of ₹12 crore, took 42 years to build. The canal was meant to provide water in 85 villages across Giridih, <keyword id="43255" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Hazaribagh">Hazaribagh</keyword> and Bokaro districts was washed away. The irrigation project in Giridih district was dedicated to the people by Chief Minister Raghubar Das on Wednesday. "The initial probe suspected 'rat holes' causing damage to the canal," said the government statement. The repair works are on. In 1978, the then Governor of undivided Bihar Jaggananth Kaushal had laid the foundation of the project. However, it was delayed due to several reasons, including the indifference of the successive governments. The cost of the project also escalated from ₹12 crore in 1978 to ₹2,500 crore. In 2003, the then Chief Minister Arjun Munda again laid the foundation stone for the canal, but work moved at a snail’s pace. In 2012, once again tender was floated for the project, which was bagged by a Mumbai-based company. As per the Water Resources Department, the total length of the canal is 404.17 km. On a regular basis, 800 cusecs water can be released daily while the overall target is to release 1,700 cusecs per day. (With IANS)

<keyword id="12864" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Chennai">Chennai</keyword>, <keyword id="6354814" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="prime-minister-narendra-modi">Prime Minister Narendra Modi</keyword>, who arrived on a visit to <keyword id="20154" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="tamil-nadu">Tamil Nadu</keyword>, inaugurated several development projects in the state here on Sunday. He flagged off the <keyword id="181971" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Chennai-Metro-Rail">Chennai Metro Rail</keyword> Phase-1 extension from Washermanpet to Wimco Nagar, built at a cost of ₹3,770 crore. The 9.05-km extension of Chennai Metro will connect North Chennai with the airport and Chennai Central Railway Station. Prime Minister Modi also inaugurated the fourth railway line between Chennai Beach and Attipattu. The 22.1-km stretch, constructed at a cost of ₹293.40 crore, that passes through Chennai and Thiruvallur districts. It will ease traffic in and around Chennai port. This section of the railway connects Chennai port and Ennore port. Modi inaugurated the electrification of single-line railway section at Villupuram-Cuddalore-Mayiladuthurai-Thanjavur and Mayiladuthurai-Thiruvarur. The electrification of this 228-km route, completed at a cost of ₹423 crore, will ensure smooth traffic between Chennai Egmore and Kanyakumari without changing the traction. This will save fuel of about ₹14.61 lakh per day. The Prime Minister laid the <keyword id="6541422" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Foundation-stone">foundation stone</keyword> for expansion, renovation and modernisation of the Grand Anicut Canal System here. This canal is very important for irrigation in the delta districts. The canal will be modernised at a cost of ₹2,640 crore, which will increase the water carrying capacity in the canals. Modi also laid the foundation stone of the Discovery Campus of <keyword id="54070" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="IIT-Madras">IIT-Madras</keyword>. The campus will be built at Thyyur near Chennai. In the first phase, construction of this campus to be built on an area of over 2 lakh square meters will cost ₹1,000 crore. PM Modi inaugurates several Tamil Nadu projects including Chennai Metro and Discovery Campus of IIT Madras

Prime Minister <keyword id="6354477" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Narendra-Modi">Narendra Modi</keyword> and Afghan President <keyword id="480125" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Ashraf-Ghani">Ashraf Ghani</keyword> today jointly inaugurated a landmark dam, a Rs 1,700 crore showpiece infrastructure project by India in strategically important <keyword id="1641186" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Herat-province">HERAT province</keyword>, reflecting India's strong commitment to reconstruction of the war-ravaged country. 
	 

	The Afghan-India Friendship Dam, earlier known as Salma Dam , on river Chist-e-Sharif in western Herat neighbouring Iran , will irrigate 75,000 hectares of land and generate 42 MW of power. 
 

	Modi is here as part of his five-nation tour and it is his second visit to Afghanistan in less than six months. 
 

	Touted as a "landmark" infrastructure project, the dam located 165 km east of Herat town, is expected to significantly boost the agricultural economy of the province. 
 

	The project has been executed and implemented by WAPCOS Ltd, a government of India undertaking under ministry of Water Resources , River Development and Ganga Rejuvenation . 
 

	In his address at the inauguration ceremony, Ghani welcomed Modi to his "second home", Afghanistan, and said a "long standing dream" of the country has been realised after 30 years with help from India. 
 

	"Today, we come together to make eternal India Afghan ties and friendship. This Dam will chart a new course of cooperation and Prosperity," said Ghani adding "Our people identify India with roads, dams and over 200 small development projects." 
 

	"Contrary to those who spread chaos and destruction, we two countries have taken the joint decision to build and grow," said Ghani. 
 

	The Herat province lies on the ancient trade routes of the Middle East , Central and South Asia . Roads from Herat to Iran, Turkmenistan, and other parts of Afghanistan are considered strategically important. 
 

	All equipment and material required for the dam were transported from India to Bander-e-Abbas port of Iran via sea route and then along 1200 km by road from there to Islam Kila border post at Iran-Afghanistan border and then further 300 km by road from the border post to the site. 
 

	Over 1,500 Indian and Afghan engineers were involved in construction of the dam for several years in difficult condition. 
 

	Afghanistan is Modi's first stop as part of his five- nation tour which will also take him to Qatar, Switzerland, the US and Mexico. 
 

	Modi had visited Kabul on December 25 last year during which he had inaugurated a swanky Parliament complex that was built by India at a cost of $90 million. 
 

	India has a strategic partnership with Afghanistan and is implementing projects worth $2 billion to help rebuild the country's infrastructure. 
 

	India has been supporting an Afghan-led, Afghan-owned, broad-based and inclusive process of peace and reconciliation, and advocating the need for a sustained and long-term commitment to Afghanistan by the international community. 
 

	Earlier, Modi was welcomed by a group of children at Governor's Office in Herat.

It said equity markets are expected to stay dynamic and competitive due to strong growth prospects and better regulation, and foreign inflows into Indian government bonds have surged since the country joined major emerging market indexes, with further growth anticipated. To maximize trade benefits, India must develop infrastructure and geopolitical strategies, particularly regarding its extensive coastline, said the first edition of 'India Forward: Emerging Perspectives' report. Nearly 90 per cent of India's trade is seaborne, necessitating robust port infrastructure to manage increasing exports and bulk commodity imports, it added. Noting that India faces rising domestic energy demands and can look to sustainable technologies, including renewables and low-emission fuels, balancing energy security with its energy transition plans, the report stated that agriculture will rely on advanced technologies and new policies to improve infrastructure and productivity. The need is to address critical infrastructure issues such as irrigation, storage, and supply distribution to ensure food security and economic stability, it added. Consul General of <keyword id="3658" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="india" source="Orion">India</keyword> Nitesh Kumar and President of Nepal-India Women Friendship Society (NIFWS) and Member of House of Representatives <keyword id="2375773" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="chanda-chaudhary" source="Orion">Chanda Chaudhary</keyword> handed over the cylinders on in Saptari district on June 3. A total of 3,000 sets of LPG stoves and 14.2 Kg cylinders and other accessories like regulators and pipes were gifted by the Government of India to underprivileged families of the districts of Sarlahi, Rautahat and Saptari. Approximately, 500 sets were distributed in Kaudena Municipality of Sarlahi district on April 19 this year. The gifting of stoves and cylinders is one of the 75 projects being inaugurated this year in Nepal as part of "India@75 Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav". The Project is inspired by the <keyword id="8775519" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="pradhan-mantri-ujjwala" source="Orion">Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala</keyword> <keyword id="6443343" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="yojana" source="Orion">Yojana</keyword> (PMUY) of the Government of India which is a flagship scheme with the objective to make clean cooking fuel such as LPG available to the rural and deprived households which were otherwise using traditional cooking fuels. <keyword id="196298" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="vijay-yadav" source="Orion">Vijay Yadav</keyword>, Chairman of Tirhut Rural Municipality; <keyword id="17624713" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="narendra-karki" source="Orion">Narendra Karki</keyword>, SP of Saptari; <keyword id="17624715" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="radha-kayasth" source="Orion">Radha Kayasth</keyword>, Vice-President of Nepal-India Women Friendship Society; local journalists and other stakeholders were present on the occasion. The families were identified through the Socio-Economic Caste Census (SECC) list in coordination with District Administration Office (DAO) and local level. Social welfare councils have also been roped in for the distribution process. The government of India has approved Nepalese Rupees 2,40,90,000 for this purpose. Consul General congratulated the beneficiaries and noted that the use of traditional cooking fuel is detrimental to the health of rural women and the environment. The gifting of these LPG gas stoves and cylinders reflected the continued support of India to Nepal. NIWFS President Chanda Chaudhary thanked the <keyword id="44734" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="indian-government" source="Orion">Indian Government</keyword> for its continued developmental support to women. Distribution of these LPG gas stoves, gas cylinders and accessories will replace the use of traditional cooking fuels like firewood, coal, and cow-dung cakes, which produce heavy smoke and cause health hazards. Since 2003, India has taken up over 535 High Impact Development Projects (HICDPs) in Nepal in various sectors Health, Education, Drinking Water and Irrigation, Electrification, etc. and has completed 476 projects and 59 ongoing projects. Amongst these, 81 projects have been undertaken in Province-2, including 19 projects in Sarlahi; 5 projects in Rautahat and 9 projects in Saptari Districts. In addition to these, 87 ambulances to various health posts and 3 school buses have been gifted in these three districts by India. As close neighbours, India and Nepal share wide-ranging and multi-sectoral cooperation. The implementation of this project reflects the continued support of the Government of India in bolstering the efforts of the Government of Nepal for the upliftment of its people. Strengthening ties: India gifts 3,000 LPG gas stoves to underprivileged families in Nepal

Bhutan's Minister for Home and Cultural Affairs, H.E. Ugyen Dorji said that <keyword id="3658" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="india" source="Orion">India</keyword> holding the G20 presidency is a matter of pride for the whole of South Asia, including Bhutan, The Bhutan Live reported on Sunday. The minister made the remarks while inaugurating the cultural evening on the eve of the fourth Y-20 consultation meeting in Pune. Y20 is a forum for youth from all G20 member countries to hold dialogue over various issues. According to The Bhutan Live, India and Bhutan share a special bilateral relationship. Bhutan has the most significant share of the allocated budget for the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) under Grants and Loans to Foreign Governments. Bhutan under the budgetary plans will receive 2,400.58 crores out of which 1,632.24 crores will be a "grant" and 768.34 crores will be a part of a "loan". Bhutan will receive financial assistance from India for a number of development projects in the fields of health, digitisation and other sectors. The 5th Bhutan-India Small Development Project (SDP)/High Impact Community Development Project (HICDP) Committee meeting between the Royal Government of Bhutan and the Government of India for the 12th Five Year Plan (FYP) was held in Thimphu on February 28. The Committee reviewed the progress of 524 Projects being implemented across 20 Dzongkhags and 4 Thromdes in Bhutan and approved Rs 850 Crore for local governments in areas such as water supply, urban infrastructure, agricultural roads, irrigation channels, bridges, health and education infrastructure. India also extended initial grant assistance of 100 Crore towards the Gyalsung Project to help Bhutan's youth participate in nation-building. The grant was handed over by the Indian Ambassador to Bhutan Sudhakar Dalela in a special ceremony. India under its 'Neighbourhood First Policy', is expected to continue its development assistance partnership with Bhutan as Thimpu shall keep growing its development agenda. According to The Bhutan Live, India while holding the G20 presidency will keep pushing the agendas that matter to the developing countries. Reforming international institutions, health, education, gender, climate and environment are issues that need attention. Since India's foreign policy has always highlighted its 'neighbourhood first' policy, it will make the most of the G20 presidency to push forward agendas while keeping the larger interest of the region in mind.
