The initiative has come in place after the opening of liquor shops during the third phase of the coronavirus lockdown saw thousands of people gathering outside stores. “Swiggy has been working closely with the West Bengal government since the beginning of the lockdown to provide support on multiple fronts. This includes delivering grocery and essentials, supporting the fisheries department for home delivery of seafood items, delivery of schoolbooks and distributing close to one lakh meals to the needy in Kolkata. Building on our successful launches in Jharkhand and Odisha we will now be enabling safe home delivery of alcohol in West Bengal. Starting with Kolkata and Siliguri, we will expand our services to 24 other cities across the state,” said a Swiggy spokesperson. Swiggy has “mandatory age verification and user authentication” for the delivery of liquor at home. While ordering customers have to take a selfie as well as upload a valid picture of their government ID card. “All orders will carry a unique OTP which needs to be provided by the customer at the time of delivery. There is also a capping on the order quantity to ensure a customer does not order alcohol above the prescribed limit as per the state law,” said the company. The company said that it will also include a QR code scanner within the delivery partner app to check the authenticity of the products before delivering them to the customer. <ul><li>Jamtara scammers are using the lockdown to scam people with the promise of <keyword id="6359858" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="alcohol">alcohol</keyword> <keyword id="40978" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="home-delivery">home delivery</keyword>.</li><li>As shelves at home run dry, people are looking to Google for their liquor needs only to get duped.</li><li>The scammers ask for advance payments, bank details and even offer ‘happy hour’ deals — only to leave you disappointed at the end of the day.</li></ul>If you’re looking to buy liquor during the lockdown — beware. It can understandably get boring as you sit at home and worry about how the coronavirus pandemic is going to play out. But trying to stock up on more alcohol may only add to your anxiety. If you have to place an order, make sure you’re only calling up a known contact and avoid making a payment in advance. Because, Jamtara scammers are making a comeback. The Jamtara scammers Jamtara, a small village in the state of Jharkhand is known for being the cybercrime hub in India. During the lockdown, shopping might have taken a hit, but cybercriminals found a new way to dupe bank account holders — this time scamming people looking to buy liquor during lockdown. Ordinarily, if a person is stuck at home and they’re looking to score some alcohol, their first instinct will be to a quick Google Search on liquor shops located close home. Most listings come with an accompanying number than you can call to check if the shop will deliver. However, there’s no way to easily verify if the listed number is genuine — or just somebody posing as the shop owner but located in some other part of the country. In the melee, anyone who’s desperate enough to transfer money in advance may end up losing a lot more than just the cost of alcohol. How does the liquor scam work? Let’s say you find a phone number on Google for the nearest liquor shop. You call them, and they say that they would be more than happy to deliver — provided you can make the payment beforehand. You’ll wait around for two or three hours before calling them to ask why your delivery hasn’t arrived yet. The people on the other end will likely say that they haven’t received the payment yet. However, if you share your bank details — they may be able to verify the transaction on their system. If you do share those details, the so-called ‘liquor shop’ will call you back in another 30 minutes to let you know that your payment has come through. But, that’s not where the scam ends. Since they have your confidential details at hand, they need your OTP to siphon off more money so they’ll try and lure you in with a ‘happy hour’ deal. In order to avail of the scheme, you have to just forward the OTP SMS that you get from your bank so that they can push the payment from their end. Within a few minutes, a large sum of money is likely to disappear from your account. You can call as many times as you would like, no-one will pick up the phone now. And, there won’t be any alcohol around to drown your sorrows in. How can you protect yourself from Jamtara scammers and their alcohol scheme? It’s obviously better if you have the number of your wine and beer shop beforehand. If you don’t, it’s probably better to forego the idea of buying alcohol — especially since it’s illegal to be supplying liquor during the lockdown anyway. If you do end up calling a number that’s promising the delivery of alcohol, choose to call a landline if the option is available. And, tell them that you will authorise the payment once the delivery is at your doorstep. Assuming you’re rich enough and a bottle of alcohol isn’t going to eat into your budget, you may be coerced into making the payment. But if the delivery still doesn’t show up, under no circumstances should you be sharing your bank details — with anyone. Not your debit card details, savings account details — and especially not your one-time-password (OTP). OTP is a secondary layer of protection, put in place specifically for the bank to ensure that you are the one authorising any payment that is going out of your account. If you share that OTP and someone else uses it for a transaction, the bank is going to assume that it’s still you making the payment at the end of the day. It’s a form of identity theft and you’ll have nobody to blame but yourself. Excise departments and cybercrime cells are already dealing with a variety of complaints with scammers using the names of well-known liquor shops to snatch money from accounts. In Kolkata, the cybersecurity wing of the police has received five complaints so far. Home delivery of alcohol is illegal — anyone telling you otherwise is probably trying to run a scam

E-commerce giant Amazon and Alibaba-backed <keyword id="964794" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="BigBasket">BigBasket</keyword> have got approval to deliver liquor in West Bengal, according to a document. Online grocery platform BigBasket said this will be the company's first foray into the country's liquor delivery segment. The clearance also signals Amazon's entry into the space, likely for the first in India. State-owned West Bengal State Beverages Corporation Ltd (BevCo) invited the two companies to sign the agreements for empanelment for home delivery after finding them eligible, as per a notice dated June 19. BevCo, the sole wholesaler of liquor in West Bengal, also invited two Kolkata-based companies -- Senrysa Technologies Pvt Ltd and Golden Goenka Commerce Pvt Ltd for the signing of agreements. Asked when BigBasket would start operations, its CEO Hari Menon told PTI, "I cannot confirm now how soon we will start, but yes it will be the first for the company." Amazon did not comment on the approval. Food ordering platforms <keyword id="830092" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Zomato">Zomato</keyword> and <keyword id="6358977" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="swiggy">Swiggy</keyword> have already started delivering alcohol in West Bengal with Kolkata and Siliguri after getting the required approvals, followed by the signing of agreements. New Delhi, Jun 4 () After Jharkhand and Odisha, food ordering and delivery platform Swiggy on Thursday started home delivery of alcohol in Kolkata and Siliguri and plans to expand to 24 other cities across West Bengal. Swiggy is leveraging its existing technology and logistics infrastructure to ensure all guidelines are maintained including social distancing, a company statement said. Food ordering platforms have initiated home delivery of alcohol as part of efforts to prevent overcrowding of people at shops amid the coronavirus pandemic. "Building on our successful launches in Jharkhand and Odisha we will now be enabling safe home delivery of alcohol in West Bengal. Starting with Kolkata and Siliguri, we will expand our services to 24 other cities across the state," a company spokesperson said. The company is partnering with authorised retailers across major cities after validating their license and other required documents as outlined by the state government. Retail partners will be equipped with a dedicated partner app that enables all aspects related to online processing of orders, the statement said. The spokesperson further noted that the company has been working closely with the West Bengal government since the beginning of the lockdown to provide support on multiple fronts including delivering grocery and essentials, seafood items, schoolbooks and distributing close to one lakh meals to the needy in Kolkata. Both the delivery partners and retailers are being virtually trained through their respective apps to facilitate smooth processing and fulfilment of orders. Swiggy has implemented multiple safety measures to ensure safe home delivery of alcohol orders. Customers need to complete an one-time instant age verification by uploading a picture of their valid government ID, followed by a selfie which the platform will use for authentication. If a mall has a vacancy of more than 40%, it’s defined as a ‘ghost mall’. The highest number of ghost malls are in Delhi NCR , followed by Pune and Hyderabad. Lack of due diligence, mall shortcomings such as size and ownership patterns, design issues, faulty layouts with dark alleys, lack of customer walk flow management, low occupancy and lack of anchor tenants — have all contributed to the creation of these ghost malls. “All attempts to breathe life into these assets and attract a good retailer mix and footfalls have been unsuccessful. As a result, the revenue generation potential of such malls is far below the expected threshold,” the report said. In some cases, termination notices have been served to shut down a few large format stores which comprised an entire mall. Discontinuation of operations, demolition of shops inside the mall premises and auctioning of the mall property due to non payment of dues to the local mall authority are also underway, said the Knight Frank report. The report also has a few suggestions for utilising these ghost malls. “The vacant spaces of ghost malls can be used for thrift stores, food and clothing banks, exhibition, presentation and event spaces. <keyword id="153014" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="daycare" source="Orion">Daycare</keyword>, elder care, pet care and even elementary and secondary schools can be opened. Workforce training centres and human development centres for government services can also spring up in ghost malls,” said <keyword id="1417134" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="shishir-baijal" source="Orion">Shishir Baijal</keyword>, chairman and MD of Knight Frank India at the unveiling of the report. Leasing out empty spaces for long-term commercial use to local businesses that cannot afford high rents in prime office business parks or popular business districts can also be done, the report suggested. Demolition of the existing structure and sale of land to minimise the losses was another suggestion that was put forth. Malls witnessing growth despite rise of e-commerce The report also stated that excluding the ghost malls, the overall mall health has improved post pandemic. There were 255 malls in 2018 but it has risen to 271 now — adding over 15 million sq feet. Despite the rise of e-commerce, India’s physical stores still account for 95% of retail business, the report claimed. The retail industry will continue to account for 10% of India's GDP for the next five financial years. The organised retail sales grew at a CAGR of 24% between FY 2017- 22. The organised retail sector in India, despite taking a hit during the pandemic, is still growing. Post Covid, the recovery in operational metrics of malls has been healthy, with consumption in January-June 2022 growing 20-25% from the same period in FY2020, the report said. “With this large-scale pent-up demand, shopping centre development has seen a new rigour after being at a standstill for almost 2 years. In the next 12 months, we expect an addition of 8-9 mn sq ft of mall space.This is not just limited to the tier 1 markets. Tier 2 and 3 cities are also ready to support mid to large scale mall developments,” Rajneesh Mahajan, CEO of Inorbit Malls said. As per <keyword id="913436" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="knight-frank-research" source="Orion">Knight Frank Research</keyword>, organised retail sales volume is estimated to grow at a CAGR of 17%, from $52 billion in FY22 to $136 billion by FY28. New Delhi, Mumbai and Bangalore have the maximum number of malls, with Hyderabad performing the best in maximum occupancy in Grade A or premium malls. India’s ghost malls have caused a loss of $524 million: Knight Frank

Developed by the nanotechnology startup Log9 Materials, the UV disinfectant product is said to have antimicrobial capabilities and can sanitise materials in ten minutes. The company claims to have sold over 1,500 units. In fact, one of its CoronaOvens has also been ordered for <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/business/startups/news/french-president-emmanuel-macrons-residence-gets-bengaluru-startups-coronaoven-which-sanitizes-everything-in-10-minutes/articleshow/76034831.cms">French President Emmanuel Macron’s official residence</a>. “We have multiple variants in two categories, portable and plug-in. The plug-in version can be plugged into a normal socket and is priced between ₹9,999 to ₹12,999 for 20 litres. While the portable one, which is battery operated, will cost around ₹17,999 for 20 litres. This can be used in an ambulance, a police van or a grocery delivery van,” the company said. The approval came after the apex body for biomedical research issued evaluation guidelines for the applications developed to contain the spread of coronavirus. Under this, the laboratories under the CSIR, Department of Biotechnology, and Department of Science &amp; Technology evaluated the products and devices so as to verify and validate them. “Log 9’s team reached out to CSIO, which was designated to certify novel UV based equipment. A lab assessment of CoronaOven product range was carried out at CSIR-CSIO’s centre in Taramani, Chennai. The assessment was conducted under standard temperature and humidity conditions in the lab, and the observations noted that the UV-C dose generated by CoronaOven is congruent with the FDA and NIH-conducted scientific study — which said that a certain controlled amount of UVC light can permanently damage the RNA sequence of SARS-CoV1 virus and destroy its ability to multiply in living cells,” the startup explained. The development makes CoronaOven the only UV disinfectant in India so far, which has been certified by the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) approved institution. The startup has also partnered with ICMR approved Dang’s Path Lab in Delhi to test the efficiency of the product on microorganisms and bacteria. “The latest certifications we have received from ICMR-approved laboratories is a testimony to the scientific and technological brilliance. As of now, CoronaOven is the only product-of-its-kind in the market,” said Akshay Singhal, Founder &amp; CEO, Log 9 Materials. The nanotechnology startup is now working with the government think tank NITI Aayog to ramp up the production and reach. It listed the product on Government of India’s e-marketplace portal (GEM). “We are working closely with NITI Aayog, government agencies, and other key stakeholders to contribute in the best possible manner to aid India’s fight against Covid-19. I believe that this will help safeguard the Indian public against non-scientific knock-offs of our product which tend to create a false positive for the consumer,” Singhal added.
