He's beguiling, but mean. He's also crass often referring to his brother as "fatso," and he takes great pleasure in torturing his brother's wife. But he is also mysterious.</p><p>Beyond the familiar male Western bravado, there are no real signs as to why he's such a bully. Although we do know that he holds Bronco Henry, a now-deceased rancher, in extremely high regard. He speaks about Henry constantly, remarking about his world-leading riding skills, his innovative weaving techniques, and the influence this has had on his life.</p><p>These constant reflections on Henry are frustratingly abstract until, suddenly, they aren't. At the turn of a dime, it becomes clear that their relationship was not only educational but emotional — and, possibly, sexual.</p><p>But we are not told this through a voice-over, flashback, or one of Burbank's stories, but through the subtleties of Cumberbatch's performance. And it is here that the film moves from being merely intriguing to deeply affecting and moving. </p><p>As the film moves deeper into Burbank's world and we slowly watch him initiate a companionship with his brother's step-son, Peter, it's hard to believe that it's Cumberbatch — who has made his name playing nice guys and, in recent years, a neurotic superhero — onscreen. She's often been interested in how and why we love. With "The Power of The Dog" she shifts her gaze specifically to men (for the first time in her career) and asks a similar question — a question asked by James Baldwin in "Giovanni's Room" and E.M. During this trailer, the terrifying Apocalypse finally takes his hood off. If you don't know who Oscar Isaac is, he has had a busy year. We have seen them grow old, turn young again, and have even seen Wolverine die. But all things must end. And if "Dark Phoenix" (opening in theaters Friday) makes anything abundantly clear from its just-shy-of-two-hour running time, it's that we all need a break from the X-Men.</p><p>"Dark Phoenix" takes place in 1992, a decade after the events of the last movie, 2016's "X-Men: Apocalypse." The X-Men are national treasures, and are seen as protectors of the world and living proof that mutants and humans can live together happily. Professor Xavier (James McAvoy) even has a direct line to the president. But things turn bad when Xavier calls on Mystique (Jennifer Lawrence), Beast (Nicholas Hoult), Cyclops (Tye Sheridan), Storm (Alexandra Shipp), Quicksilver (Evan Peters), Nightcrawler (Kodi Smit-McPhee), and Jean Grey (Sophie Turner) to assist in saving the NASA space shuttle Endeavour after it has complications following its launch.</p><p>The X-Men fly to space on the X-Jet and find Endeavour spinning like a top. Next to it is a giant anomaly they think is a solar flare. The team works on rescuing the crew inside the Endeavour but learns that the captain is still inside. With the solar flare getting closer to the ship, Xavier tells Jean to go into the ship and protect it using her powers so Nightcrawler has enough time to find the captain. The captain is saved, but at the same moment Nightcrawler brings him back to the X-Jet, Jean absorbs the entire solar flare. They all return home as heroes, including Jean, who says she's fine. An alien race, led by Vuk (Jessica Chastain), comes to Earth in search of Jean so they can obtain the energy source. But Jean is kind of going through some things. Her new powers have unlocked her troubled childhood, which Xavier kept blocked deep in her mind years ago. The new memories maker her revolt against the X-Men and in the process come right into the welcoming arms of Vuk, which causes a rift in the X-Men, and destroys all the goodwill Xavier had made with humans about mutants.</p><p>Directed by the franchise's longtime writer/producer Simon Kinberg, the movie is a lot of build-up with no payoff. Turner is an incredibly talented actor, but outside of a lot of sinister stares and CGI-generated powers, she's not given much to do. And when your superhero movie hinges on a finale set on a train, you kind of know you're doomed. (Though it must be said that the movie is better at exploring Jean's new powers than 2006's "X-Men: The Last Stand," when Famke Janssen played the role.)</p><p><em><strong>Read more</strong></em>: <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/kevin-hart-hartbeat-productions-is-growing-as-a-hitmaker-2019-6"><em>Inside Kevin Hart's 10-year journey to make his production company into a Hollywood hit maker</em></a></p><p>Even the characters who have been around since "X-Men: First Class" can't keep things exciting.</p><p>Lawrence as Mystique looks like she'd rather be somewhere else (and her character actually wants to be somewhere else, as Mystique tries to convince Beast they should leave the X-Men). Michael Fassbender returns to play Magneto, and outside of a battle of minds with Jean Grey over the control of a helicopter (both of their faces hilariously distorted by the wind coming off the helicopter blades - the wind machine budget on this movie must have been insane) he too is just going through the motions. At least we get to see the patented Fassbender single tear. McAvoy is still great as Xavier. And that's a good thing. Nine movies (three of them focused on Hugh Jackman as Wolverine) is a lot for a franchise, especially one that has a history filled with ups and downs at the box office.</p><p>But what has been consistent throughout (and perhaps why the X-Men movies never stopped) is their performance overseas. Outside of 2000's "X-Men" and "X2: X-Men United" three years later, every other movie in the franchise has performed better internationally than it did domestically. 'Dark Phoenix' proves it's time for a big break from the X-Men franchise, but the international box office could make that a tough decision for Disney

Since Wolverine changed the course of history in the last film, we're now dealing with an entirely alternate timeline for the X-Men. </p><p>That may have unleashed something much worse. </p><p>As teased at the end of "X-Men: Days of Future Past," the film will revolve around a 5,000-year-old Egyptian mutant named Apocalypse who is believed to be the first mutant.</p><p><a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/x-men-days-of-future-past-end-credits-2014-5">We've mentioned this before</a>, but Apocalypse is known for leading a team called the Horsemen of the Apocalypse which has consisted of a rotating group of four mutants over the years. The big secret was that we didn't know which four mutants would be working with Apocalypse in the next X-Men film, and now we finally do. Apocalypse will have a young Storm (Alexandra Shipp), Angel (Ben Hardy), Psylocke (Olivia Munn), and Magneto (Michael Fassbender) at his side. </p><p>In "Apocalypse," the ancient mutant is after Charles Xavier (James McAvoy) to join his ranks and to help destroy the world. </p><p>Unsurprisingly, Xavier isn't down to down to join the dark side.</p><p><a href="http://www.ew.com/article/2015/07/15/x-men-apocalypse-first-look-new-generation-ew?ew">Via EW</a>:</p><p style="padding-left: 30px;">As <em>Apocalypse </em>opens, 10 years have passed and Raven, Charles, and Erik are still estranged, but not for much longer. The Big A [Apocalypse] awakens from his Egyptian tomb, sizes up the global '80s vibe, and decides he's not down with the Reagan era ...</p><p style="padding-left: 30px;">He finds teenage Storm living on the streets in Cairo, Angel duking it out in a fight club in Berlin, and Psylocke working behind the Iron Curtain for the mutant-broker Caliban. We finally have a good idea of what the next 'X-Men' movie will be about

<p><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;"><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><img src="https://static-ssl.businessinsider.com/image/552680b0ecad048e79f831ee-1200-800/slow-west-dsc_0008_rgb.jpg" border="0" alt="slow west gun fassbender"><p class="source"><span>A24</span></p></img></div><p></p></div></div>"Slow West" is a modern Western clearly made by people that love and respect the genre, though it has more in common with a mismatched buddy comedy than a John Wayne film.</span></p><p><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;">The premise is simple - a young Scottish boy (Kodi Smit-McPhee) travels across late 19th-century West in pursuit of the woman he loves. </span><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;">The boy is incredibly naive and knows not of the unspeakable horrors that lie in the desolate countryside. </span></p><p><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;">Lucky for him, he crosses paths with an outlaw drifter (Michael Fassbender) that offers to help guide and protect him along the way for a small fee. Little does he know the drifter may have a motive of his own.</span></p><p><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;">Fassbender likely says more in voiceover narration than he does to the boy, and the difference in candor between these two mediums reveals there may be more to him than his brutish exterior would indicate. As more characters are introduced, </span><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;">Fassbender's value to the boy becomes clearer, and his charming demeanor becomes more sinister. The chemistry between the two is always lively and fun, and since the audience knows Fassbender is up to something, the tension only continues to rise until all hell breaks loose.</span></p><p><span><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><img src="https://static-ssl.businessinsider.com/image/552680af6bb3f7b02a40d7bb-1200-858/slow-west-dsc_0516_rgb.jpg" border="0" alt="slow west shave fassbender"><p class="source"><span>A24</span></p></img></div><p></p></div></div>Besides the actual leads, the real star of the show here is the gorgeous, seemingly endless, wide-open spaces of the old West. The photography does a great job of isolating our heroes - as they go deeper and deeper into unchartered territory, they appear even more alone amongst the sweeping New Zealand backdrops, which themselves are a bit more confined by the director's decision to shoot 1.66:1. </span></p><p><span>Westerns are usually the perfect vehicle for a fuller, wider "scope" aspect ratio of 2.35:1, but the smaller, tighter frames work well here, restricting the view and keeping the audience in the same space as the characters.</span><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;"> The string-filled score does a great job of accenting the action and feels like a solid mix of old-school and contemporary influences.  </span></p><p><span>The most surprising thing about "Slow West" is how genuinely funny it is in spite of the fact that it's <span>steeped in Shakespearean level tragedy</span>. There are a number of hilarious gags weaved throughout, and even when things get incredibly dark, there's a big punchline a second later to ease the pain. This Western starring Michael Fassbender is hilarious, violent, and awesome
