"Millions of guests have counted on us for their daily dose of wholesome family fun, and we're committed to keeping that promise going forward."</p><p>The policy requires that on Fridays and Saturday, all guests 17 or younger be accompanied by a chaperone 21 or older. Chaperones must stay with their party, can have no more than three minors with them and must be available by phone.</p><p>Minors found without a chaperone may be kicked out.</p><p>The policy applies to all ticket- and season pass-holders at Knott's Berry Farm and Knott's Soak City Waterpark. The policy went into effect Friday and will remain until further notice.</p><p>The change follows a weekend of fights involving multiple teenagers at Knott's, <a href="https://www.cbsnews.com/losangeles/news/multiple-fights-break-out-at-knotts-berry-farm-prompts-police-resopnse-early-park-closure/">leading the park to close several hours early.</a></p><p>"On Saturday evening, the decision was made to close the park 3 hours early due to unruly behavior and altercations involving a number of teenagers," Knott's said at the time. "This behavior did not align with our park's values, and was not the experience we want any guest to have while visiting Knott's Berry Farm." </p>

<ul class="summary-list"><li>A man climbed to the top of the Supreme Scream tower at <keyword id="11666921" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="knotts-berry-farm">Knott's Berry Farm</keyword> on Saturday evening.</li><li>He eventually climbed down safely and is now in police custody.</li><li>The man will undergo a mental health evaluation, according to CBSN Los Angeles.</li></ul><p>A man climbed to the top of the Supreme Scream tower at Knott's Berry Farm in Buena Park, <keyword id="2379" type="CITY" weightage="60" keywordseo="California">California</keyword>, on Saturday evening, <a href="https://www.foxla.com/news/man-stood-on-top-of-tall-tower-at-knotts-berry-farm-for-hour-before-coming-down-safely">FOX 11 </a>reported.</p><p>He remained on top of the <keyword id="395849" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="amusement-park">amusement park</keyword> ride, which stands at 325 feet, for over an hour, the local broadcaster said.</p><p>The area around the Supreme Scream was evacuated, but the park did not close, according to <a href="https://losangeles.cbslocal.com/2021/07/17/man-climbs-large-tower-at-knotts-berry-farm-refuses-to-come-down/">CBSN Los Angeles.</a></p><p>After around 90 minutes, the man began his descent by climbing down a ladder on the side of the tower. He was detained by police and will undergo a mental health evaluation, CBSN Los Angeles reported.</p><p>Videos of the incident show the man trying to maintain his balance as he stands at the peak of the ride's tower.</p><p>In a statement, Knott's Berry Farm said: "At approximately 7:23 pm, Knott's Berry Farm became aware of a male who had accessed an unauthorized area and climbed the Supreme Scream tower. Park personnel alerted local law enforcement and emergency responders who are now on site."</p><p>The statement continued: "The guest descended the tower at 8:55 pm and is now currently safely on the ground in police custody. No other information is available at this time. The safety of our guests is always our top priority."</p>

<ul class="summary-list"><li>From the time I was a boy, I was raised to inherit the family legacy.</li><li>No one asked me if that was what I wanted, and I sacrificed my own career and life goals to do it.</li></ul><p>Some of my earliest memories are connected to my family's business, <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.latimes.com/archives/la-xpm-1996-12-03-fi-5214-story.html">Mott's Miniatures</a>, in Buena Park, California.</p><p>It was a museum that depicted the history of America in miniature. We even had displays that were featured in the <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/celebrities-who-have-set-guinness-world-records">Guinness Book of World Records</a>.</p><p>As a young boy, not even 10, I remember getting a rag and bottle of cleaner to clean the glass showcases. To this day, <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/guides/health/does-windex-kill-germs">the smell of Windex</a> will take me back to those days.</p><h2 id="62b05eb1-ec4c-4e57-98fc-41f97dce23f0">I was raised to take over the family business</h2><p>From as far back as I can remember, the family had been raising me to take over their legacy.</p><p>I remember conventions in San Francisco, Louisville, and Miami. There was even one trip we took to Orlando when my mom and aunt were invited to attend the grand opening of the Toy Soldier <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/nyc-to-disney-world-and-back-in-24-hours-costs-photos-2024-8">store at Disney World</a>. And it was kind of fun. In the 1970s, not a lot of elementary school kids had ever flown on an airplane.</p><p>The family worked for years to establish their business. For over a decade, they had a traveling exhibit where they were paid to display their collection. In 1958, when they moved to Knott's, my grandmother worked full time at the museum, and my mom, aunt, and grandpa kept their jobs and <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-much-do-museum-employees-make-2019-6">worked at the museum</a>.</p><p>That was their choice; this was their passion. But it wasn't mine. My sacrifice came in the form of responsibility to the family and not being able to <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/quit-my-job-follow-my-dreams-and-failed-what-learned-2023-4">pursue my own life or career</a>.</p><p>Every time I tried to have my own life, the needs of the family always pulled me back. At one point in his 80's, my grandpa was working 12 hours a day, seven days a week. It resulted in his being hospitalized with pneumonia and losing the use of a lung, so he could no longer work full-time. This was the moment when the family asked me to step in on a full-time basis.</p><h2 id="c1416778-3696-4e87-ba7a-8a4b66460598">They rejected an offer of millions of dollars</h2><p>In 1992, Knott's Berry Farm Park wanted to buy their business and offered a generous buyout of millions of dollars, but my folks rejected it out of hand.</p><p>With contract negotiations at an impasse, the park canceled its contract. After 34 years, the family business had to leave its once permanent home. I wish my folks had taken that buyout; it would have set them up for the rest of their lives. But they were emotionally attached to their business and couldn't see someone else owning it.</p><p>I closed the museum in 1998 and sold the collection at auction. A few years later, my mom passed away, and I sold the last remaining pieces she'd clung to.</p><p>I've kept a few small things: a few pieces of miniature furniture that my grandfather hand-carved, a frame containing my grandma's original Cracker Jack prizes from the early 1900s, and some things that my mom and aunt made. But the famous Mott's Miniature Collection is no more.</p><p>I felt as though I had been able to keep their dream alive. Some form of their business remained open as long as my folks were alive.</p><h2 id="0d9020c6-a2f9-4d18-9680-06145aac9bee">I didn't want to burden my child with this business</h2><p>Though I had made tremendous sacrifices for the family, I was fortunate to have achieved most of my goals. I served in the military twice; for a time, I had a career as a corporate executive. I got to be a father and now grandfather, and <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/retired-early-moved-to-rv-be-close-to-family-2024-8">I retired early</a> and can now travel.</p><p>I was also able to achieve another goal I'd set for myself the day I learned that I was going to be a father, making sure that my son would not be saddled with the burden of the family business.</p><p>I kept my parents' dreams alive for a long time and kept them from being destitute and homeless. My folks wanted their legacy to live on with me at the helm. I wasn't able to make that happen. But their legacy was not mine. Their dreams were never mine.</p>

<ul class="summary-list"><li>A theme park visitor in California stopped a roller coaster because they wanted to get off.</li><li>A Knott's Berry Farm spokesperson told Fox that everyone else on the ride had to evacuate too.</li></ul><p>A roller coaster in California was stopped mid-operation on Friday and its riders had to be evacuated after a single passenger asked to get off the ride.</p><p>The Silver Bullet ride at Knott's Berry Farm was filmed by a passerby as it stalled on its track, <a href="https://www.foxla.com/news/riders-stuck-on-knotts-berry-farm-rollercoaster" target="_blank" rel="noopener">FOX 11 first reported.</a></p><p>The ride appeared to halt when it was ascending, and just after it left the roller coaster station. No one was hurt, the outlet reported.</p><p>"On Friday, May 26 at approximately 4:15 p.m., the ride Silver Bullet stopped with guests onboard," a park spokesperson <a href="https://www.foxnews.com/us/california-roller-coaster-evacuated-midair-passenger-wanted" target="_blank" rel="noopener">told Fox News.</a> "A guest indicated they wanted to get off the attraction, park personnel responded immediately, and all guests onboard exited safely following standard exiting procedure. The safety and security of our guests and associates is Knott's Berry Farm's top priority."</p><p>The ride started operating again after 30 minutes, the spokesperson told the outlet.</p><p>The spokesperson did not say how the park visitor indicated that they wanted to get off the ride, nor did it say if stopping a roller coaster mid-ride is standard procedure.</p><p>The press department for Knott's Berry Farm did not immediately respond to Insider's request for comment sent outside regular business hours.</p><p>Had the park guest stayed on the Silver Bullet, they'd have to face over half a mile of track filled with inversions and loops. <a href="https://www.knotts.com/rides-experiences/silver-bullet">The attraction flips guests upside down</a> at least six times in two minutes, and climbs 146 feet before dropping 109 feet.</p>

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Shopping malls, theme parks, and a Chick-fil-A restaurant are starting to require chaperones for teenagers.</li><li>The policies are in response to rowdy behavior and fighting, which often ends up being posted on TikTok.</li></ul><p>Malls, restaurants, and theme parks across the country are starting to put a new policy in place: no teens allowed with chaperones.</p><p>Southern California's Knott's Berry Farm announced in April that it was instituting a stricter policy in response to "increasing incidents of unruly and inappropriate behavior," <a href="https://www.knotts.com/code-of-conduct" target="_blank" rel="noopener">the theme park said.</a></p><p>The new policy further limits the park's teenage visitors. In July, <a href="https://www.latimes.com/california/story/2022-07-16/multiple-fights-near-knotts-berry-farm-park-closes-early" target="_blank" rel="noopener">fighting broke out between teens</a> that forced the park to shut down early — in response, Knott's Berry Farm banned anyone 17 and younger to visit the park or its water park, Soak City, unchaperoned on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays.</p><p>The new policy goes even further: now, anyone age 15 or younger will need to be accompanied by an adult after 4 p.m. </p><div type="image" title="Group poses for photo in front of roller coaster at Knott's Berry Farm" height="1665" width="2220" msid="99853229" hostid="261"></div><p>Knott's Berry Farm isn't alone in cracking down on unsupervised teenage visitors recently. Westfield Garden State Plaza, New Jersey's oldest mall located in the northern city of Paramus, <a href="https://www.westfield.com/united-states/gardenstateplaza/parentalguidancepolicy" target="_blank" rel="noopener">announced in April</a> that anyone under the age of 18 needs an adult chaperone after 5 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays. The mall is also adding "waiting zones" for teens who need to be picked up after the curfew begins. </p><p>Wesley Rebisz, the mall's senior general manager, <a href="https://www.northjersey.com/story/money/shopping/2023/04/13/garden-state-plaza-teens-need-chaperone-weekends-hours/70112021007/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">told NorthJersey.com</a> that the new policy is in response to "large crowds of teens" who "aren't just enjoying the property." </p><p>"They're being unruly, violating code of conduct, which can include running through the property in large groups, fighting and putting it on TikTok, basically disrupting business and making it uncomfortable for our everyday customers," he said. </p><p>The Mall at Robinson in Pittsburgh <a href="https://www.wtrf.com/news/local-mall-bans-unaccompanied-minors-two-days-a-week/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">added a similar policy</a> in March — chaperones required for anyone under 18 on Fridays and Saturdays after 3 p.m. — as did Cincinnati, Ohio, amusement park Kings Island, where park-goers 15 and under <a href="https://www.visitkingsisland.com/code-of-conduct" target="_blank" rel="noopener">now require adult supervision</a> after 4 p.m. </p><h2>Curfews are nothing new, especially at shopping malls</h2><div type="image" title="chick fil a pandemic" height="2672" width="3562" msid="99853230" hostid="261"></div><p>These types of policies began cropping up in the 1980s and 1990s, when <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/shopping-mall-rise-fall-timeline-1950s-to-today-2023-1">malls became de facto town squares</a> and the center of many Americans' social lives, and they've come back from time to time in response to rowdy teens, <a href="https://gothamist.com/news/nj-malls-solution-to-disruptive-teens-make-them-get-chaperones" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Gothamist reported.</a></p><p>But curfews haven't always won support. When Mall of America instituted a curfew for teenagers in 1996, it was <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/1996/09/04/us/big-mall-s-curfew-raises-questions-of-rights-and-bias.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">opposed by the American Civil Liberties Union</a>, who said it infringed on young people's rights and that it should be the job of parents, not a mall or the government, to make decisions about their kids. </p><p>Today's wave of teen-restrictive policies hasn't seemed to draw the ire of the ACLU yet, and some businesses argue they're necessary to protect their stores and employees. </p><p>Restaurant management at a Chick-fil-A in a suburb of Philadelphia announced <a href="https://www.facebook.com/CFARoyersford/posts/pfbid07KYPtJjhnZuA3zxfhMJ8WpBLGBVQjDN8zeVWGhoKejYvSQSAfQ19YEREmpSAxwvcl" target="_blank" rel="noopener">on Facebook</a> in February a new policy for young customers after a series of "unacceptable behaviors." </p><p>According to the post, groups of kids and teens who came in without adults were loudly using explicit language, throwing food and trash, vandalizing tables and restrooms, stealing decorations, making fun of and cursing at employees, and walking through the drive-thru lanes. </p><p>Now, anyone under age 16 must be accompanied by an adult to dine in — or take their food to go.</p><p>"Parents, we are not blaming you. Children and teens are learning to navigate the world free from supervision and often push the boundaries," a post says. "We simply can't let them push those boundaries anymore at our restaurant." </p>

The park's rides will also remain closed, according to Tegan Glasheen, a spokesman for San Diego County, as <a href="https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2020-08-19/seaworld-san-diego-cleared-to-open-by-county-under-zoo-provision?srnd=premium&amp;sref=LspfQlRvQlRv">reported by Bloomberg</a>. </p><p>In California, zoos have more <a href="https://files.covid19.ca.gov/pdf/guidance-zoos-museums.pdf">relaxed policies</a> for reopening than amusement parks. </p><p>In the state-issued guidelines, zoos (along with museums, galleries, and aquariums) still have to follow social distancing protocols, but their outdoor spaces can be open for visitors. These businesses are to limit capacity in order to ensure that social distancing can still take place. </p><p>Amusement parks, on the other hand, have not been given official guidance to open, and there is no timeline as to when and how parks may be open. </p><p>SeaWorld isn't the only park that has changed operations in order to open back up. </p><p><a href="https://dailytitan.com/news/local/knott-s-berry-farm-taste-of-calico-event-open-to-limited-guests-amid-surge-in/article_ca05e1c1-5d83-58dd-9fa6-ec3855afd139.html">Knott's Berry Farm</a> has been holding outdoor festivals, as outdoor dining has been allowed to resume in the state.
