Weekly meetings now take place between camp 'elders', who each represent a community inside the camp.</p><p>They discuss any issue that each community might be experiencing and also voice any problems that arise in order to avoid conflict.<br /><br /><span>Tom Radcliffe, who has been volunteering in the Calais for months, explained that he had seen the camp really develop - with refugees </span><span>getting more and more organised and establishing a real structure to their daily lives. </span><br /><br /><span>He also stressed the importance that </span><span>volunteers and</span><span> associations discuss with residents how they could help, rather than deciding for them what needs to be. "It's all about human dignity," he said. </span></p><p>The restaurants, shops, and cafes are all run by refugees from different nationalities. Other shops also sell small electronic objects such as headphones, wireless phone chargers, batteries, and sim cards. Tobacco is also sold in most shops.</p><p>Many restaurants also line the streets inside the camp, most of them have their name painted in bright colours on the front as well as messages welcoming customers. Here's how the Calais 'Jungle' has developed into a small town - complete with a club and a library

New Delhi, Mar 1 () A three-day Krishi Vigyan Mela began here on Sunday which will showcase the latest crop seed varieties, technology and products developed by both government and private companies.<p> About 39 innovative farmers and five fellow farmers were awarded at the annual mela being held from March 1-3, organised by the country's premier research body ICAR-Indian Agricultural Research Institute at Mela Ground of the PUSA campus in the national capital.</p><p> Agriculture Minister Narendra Singh Tomar, who inaugurated the event, called for retention of talent in agriculture.</p><p> "India has a vast pool of agricultural scientists and specialists graduating from universities every year. Government can provide funds, subsidies and incentives, but there has to be an interest in farming. For this, agriculture has to be made a profitable venture," Tomar said.</p><p> The minister also said the agri-students should be successful farmers as well and their career purpose should not be just securing a cushy job or remaining engaged in education and research.</p><p> "Even those agriculturists retiring every year should remain involved in farming and inspire others. The farmer should remain alive in you. You may engage in farming in your kitchen garden in your spare time. It will keep you connected with agriculture as a profession," he added.</p><p> Highlighting steps taken towards achieving the goal of doubling farmers' income by 2022, the minister said the government is giving Rs 6,000 per annum income support to each farmer under the PM-Kisan scheme, hiked minimum support price of crops and is giving credit facility under the Kisan Credit Card initiative, among others.</p><p> "The Prime Minister has ensured transparency in disbursal of benefits to farmers and now there is no role for middlemen and brokers. Besides, there will be no shortage of funds and budgetary support for agriculture," he added.</p><p> Tomar also said that aggregating farmers in the form of Farmer Producer Organisations (FPOs) will promote contract farming and help increase their income.</p><p> The government has set a target of setting up 10,000 new FPOs, for which Rs 6,600 crore budget allocation has been made for the next fiscal.</p><p> The central government will provide Rs 15 lakh for setting up each FPO, he said, adding that the registration for the same was launched on Saturday.</p><p> "It is the responsibility of officials to ensure FPOs become strong and trusted, help improve farmers income and contribute to the country's GDP," he added.</p><p> Ministers of State for Agriculture Purshottam Rupala and Kailash Choudhary as well as Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) Director General Trilochan Mohapatra and Indian Agriculture Research Institute (IARI) Director A K Singh were present at the event.</p><p> At the farmers' fair, one can see live demonstration of rabi (winter) crops, protected cultivation of vegetables and flowers besides exhibition and sale of farm equipment developed by government research bodies and private companies.</p><p> One will also get to see and buy products developed by innovative farmers. Agri min inaugurates 3-day Krishi Vigyan Mela in national capital

In <keyword id="200243" type="LOCATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="Dungarpur">Dungarpur</keyword> district of <keyword id="6355588" type="LOCATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="Rajasthan">Rajasthan</keyword> where 92 percent of the population is economically backward and exceptionally vulnerable to environmental hazards, many farmers struggled with lack of knowledge and poor farming practices. Today, improved farming in Dungarpur is not only changing the way families cultivate crops or vegetables, but also influence the quality of food and livelihood practices. Moreover, it is increasing their resilience to the vagaries of weather in an area that is prone to drought and soil erosion. <br /><br /> One farmer Mamta recalls their helplessness in the face of unpredictable climatic conditions where they would be forced to grow only Maize. “Almost every year, the crops used to fail and the incomes from the yield were so poor that we would barely have enough to feed the family”. Recurring monsoon failure and infertile soil made farming non-profitable. Mamta’s husband was forced to leave Dungarpur in search of livelihood. Mamta decided to stay back and toil in her ancestral land to keep her kitchen going. <br /><br /> Majority of women in Dungarpur are farmers. A women farm leader, Laxmi Raut, says, "Farming was male-dominated. Especially, men only went outside Dungarpur to sell the produce. But this has changed now. We women are now successful farmers and agri-entrepreneurs. We are happy to bring a social change in the community”. <br /><br /> This success and much more were achieved through the formation of a Farmers Producers Organisation (FPO) with the support of a non-profit organisation, World Vision India, which works for children. Mandviya Agri-base Farmer Producer Company was formed consisting members of the households identified as marginal and having children suffering from malnutrition. Formation of the FPO not only strives to build the economic stability of the community but it also aims at addressing children health issues especially malnutrition. FPO, which is a scheme of the central Government under its National Food Security Act, proved to be the much-needed help for the farmers. <br /><br /> The FPO has 1025 members, out of which 681 are women, who remain actively involved in the decision-making process and regularly attend company meetings. Together with Krishi Vigyan Kendras (KVK), trainings were organised for the members of the FPO besides providing necessary grain seeds and farming infrastructure. A WhatsApp group comprising KVK’s resident scientists and farmers was also created for quick resolution of queries.<br /><br /> These interventions have successfully reduced the seasonal migration amongst many men from 8-10 months to 3-4 months a year. Farmers, including female farmers, have now successfully moved away from chemical pesticide and fertiliser based farming to organic-by-trust farming. This has contributed towards making Dungarpur being declared an ‘Organic District' by the State government.<br /><br /> Women farmers are now empowered to carry out agricultural activities and travel out of the village to sell their produce in the districts, a task that was often entrusted only to male members. <keyword id="342231" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Mamta-Devi">Mamta Devi</keyword>, speaking on the change in the attitude of men towards women said, "We learn new things like packaging and cleaning of the urad dal (black gram) through training programmes. We can only learn this once we step outside our homes and it will help us do better work. If we explain this to our husbands, they understand us now.”<br /><br /> S.N. Ojha, the Programme Coordinator of Krishi Vigyan Kendra, said, "Women are sometimes much better farmers than men. Women get chances to economically manage the family and ancestral land only when their husbands migrate to other cities for work. As such women show more interest to learn and adapt to new techniques that can help them do farming better and make the land more productive. Training women farmers on vermicompost making and other techniques will yield a much faster result and growth. This Women Farmers’ Producer Organisation is tackling malnutrition and migration in Rajasthan’s Dungarpur district

New Delhi, Apr 20 () Non-profit body The Akshaya Patra Foundation on Monday said it has already served over 2 crore meals to vulnerable communities like migrant workers and homeless people affected due to the lockdown imposed to contain the COVID-19 outbreak.<p> As on April 17, the Foundation has cumulatively served 2,19,44,385 meals which include 93,57,839 freshly cooked meals and 3,02,541 food relief kits (1,25,86,546 meal servings) to people in need in various locations across India, an official statement said.</p><p> The relief feeding endeavour has been initiated in Andhra Pradesh, Assam, Chhattisgarh, Dadra and Nagar Haveli, Delhi and NCR, Gujarat, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Odisha, Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu, Telangana, Tripura, Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand.</p><p> "We have been able to serve over 2 crore meals to people in need during these difficult times due to the collaborative efforts of everyone involved," The Akshaya Patra Foundation Chairman Madhu Pandi Dasa said and thanked everyone for the donation.</p><p> "I sincerely hope that the situation will improve soon and people will be able to get back to their day-to-day life. Until then, we will continue our efforts to serve as many people as possible," he added.</p><p> The Foundation said it is using its kitchen network to prepare the meals and deliver them to the centres assigned by the authorities. Simultaneously, packaging centres have been set up in various locations across the country where food relief kits are packed with essential groceries based on the local palate.</p><p> The kits to be distributed in Bangalore, for instance, contain rice, tur dal, oil, spices, sambar and rasam powder, and vegetables which are known to have a long shelf-life, such as potatoes and pumpkins. Each kit has groceries sufficient for either 42 or 28 meals, it said.</p><p> In this endeavour, the Foundation said it has been supported by proactive corporate partners and individual donors.</p><p> For instance, Infosys founder N R Narayana Murthy and his family contributed Rs 10 crore from their personal funds toward Akshaya Patra's COVID-19 relief work. Their generous donation has enabled the Foundation to distribute 1.33 lakh food relief kits, which are equivalent to 55,86,000 meals, it said.</p><p>  Several corporate houses, such as the Biocon Foundation, Capgemini, CISCO, Coca–Cola, CLP, Deutsche Bank, DLF Foundation, Goldman Sachs, Gland Pharmaceuticals, HT Parekh Foundation, Hero Moto Corp, Infosys Foundation, LG Electronics, Morgan Stanley, Nestle India, PepsiCo Foundation, Sarojini Trust, Texas Instruments, Vedanta, Vivo, Walmart and many others, have come forward to contribute to the relief feeding endeavour.</p><p> The Foundation further said it has also received in-kind support for the endeavour with General Mills (Mumbai) donating cookies and cakes for distribution in Bangalore, Hyderabad and Noida, Britannia donating around 20,000 packs of 'Good Day' biscuits to be distributed in Bangalore, and Epigamia donating 17,000 premium yoghurt cups for distribution in Bangalore and Ahmedabad.</p><p> Similarly, Bollywood personalities, such as Hrithik Roshan and Raveena Tandon, have also donated to the Foundation's efforts.</p> Also supporting the Foundation are motivated volunteers who have selflessly come forward at this hour of need. <p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>EatFirst</span></p><p class="caption">EatFirst CEO and founder Rahul Parekh.</p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>In 2014, Rahul Parekh left his job as a derivatives trader at Goldman Sachs in order to launch his own food company.</p><p>That company, EatFirst, is now shipping ready made meals to people's homes and offices across London and is considering expanding to other <keyword id="6354868" type="COUNTRY" weightage="60" keywordseo="UK">UK</keyword> cities from next spring.</p><p>The startup, which has delivered over 100,000 meals since launching in September 2015, has an app that allows people to order healthy meals in advance. You can order up to two weeks in advance or effectively on demand.</p><p>Parekh, who spent eight years at Goldman, now relies on an army of approximately 10 chefs to conjure up fresh dishes on a daily basis. The food is cooked in a kitchen in Wapping before it's delivered to people across the capital by a fleet of between 50 and 100 delivery drivers.</p><p>"I started the business really as a focus on curing everything that was wrong with takeaway food," the 30-year-old told Business Insider. "My background was in banking. I spent eight years at Goldman and I ordered a lot of takeaways and I just didn't feel like it was a great experience and thought there was a big potential gap in the market for a business that was just really focused on creating great delivery food."</p><p>Unlike Deliveroo, UberEats, and Amazon Restaurants, EatFirst cooks all of the food it delivers itself instead of simply shipping food that's been made by other restaurants.</p><p>"We cook everything fresh on the day and then we chill it down and we send it to you," said Parekh, who holds an economics degree from Cambridge University.</p><p>"Our meals come accompanied with meal cards. Those meal cards contain very short, simple heating instructions. You know, five minutes in an oven or microwave or hob. If you compare it to say a supermarket ready meal, the difference is supermarket ready meals are typically packed full of preservatives because they need to last a long period of time. That's why they can taste good but they're unhealthy and don't feel healthy."</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>EatFirst</span></p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>EatFirst's menu has approximately 10 main dishes on it each day, as well as snacks, wine, and desserts. The rotating menu is dictated by head chef Ben Hodges, who used to work in the kitchens at The Ivy and The Century Club, before joining Japanese food chain Itsu to work on R&amp;D. "He's been the main driving force behind the menu," said Parekh.</p><p>The company, which employs roughly 50 people (excluding drivers), uses a range of suppliers in London, including <a href="http://www.flockandherd.com/flock-and-herd---main.html" target="_blank">Flock and Herd</a> and <a href="http://www.cannonandcannon.com" target="_blank">Cannon &amp; Cannon</a>.</p><p>Parekh says that the most popular EatFirst dish "by far" is the £9.95 salmon teriyaki. "The dish is made in an EatFirst way with a healthy focus so the rice is mixed with quinoa and there are fresh vegetables," he explains. Other dishes available on EatFirst include Thai beef Panang curry and grilled baby chicken, both priced at £8.95.</p><p>In terms of who is using the service, Parekh says there are a large number of business customers who order food for time-poor employees that they can eat during team lunches or team meetings. "They generally tend to be tech companies ordering for meetings. 50-200 people companies," he said. "That's quite common. We also have relationships with some corporates, typically financial."</p><h2>Fuelled with capital from Berlin's Rocket Internet</h2><p>In order to get EatFirst off the ground, Parekh turned to German company builder Rocket Internet which gave it an undisclosed amount of seed funding for an undisclosed stake in the company.</p><p>"I met <a href="http://uk.businessinsider.com/rocket-internet-oliver-samwer-2015-8" target="_blank">Oliver Samwer</a>, who runs Rocket Internet. It was an introduced meeting through an ex-colleague at Goldman. I told him about the business idea. For me it was kind of a way of pitching to get seed investment. He thought it was a great idea and gave us the seed funding.</p><p>"I can't say how much but it wasn't a large amount. Basically enough for us to get an initial MVP [minimum viable product] operation going. Build a small team, have a kitchen, and start doing some trials around food production."</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_left"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Reuters</span></p><p class="caption">Rocket Internet CEO and cofounder Oliver Samwer.</p></div><p></p></div></div>Rocket <a href="http://startups.co.uk/online-restaurant-eatfirst-secures-8m-backing-to-build-on-rapid-growth/" target="_blank">invested in EatFirst again</a> last year alongside the Daily Mail and General Trust (DMGT) when the company raised an $8 million (£6 million) funding round. </p><p>"The way it worked with Rocket, was we went through effectively a 100-day incubation programme with them," said Parekh. "We did it a little bit different to some of their other ventures which are more home grown within Rocket. They helped us with resources for example. They gave us access to their IT talent, marketing talent, finance talent. We were able to draw upon those resources to get started and then slowly we started building our own team before we came off that incubator."</p><p>Samwer, one of a handful of tech billionaires in Germany, has <a href="http://thehustle.co/rocket-internet-oliver-samwer" target="_blank">been called out as a ruthless CEO</a> who can be difficult to work for. His company employs aggressive growth tactics in order to take businesses from idea to billions of dollars in revenue in under three years. But Parekh only had kind words to say about Samwer, who <a href="https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2014-10-01/rocket-internet-said-to-price-frankfurt-ipo-at-eu42-50-a-share" target="_blank">IPO'd Rocket Internet on the Frankfurt Stock Exchange in 2014</a>.</p><p>"Oliver is very, very hands on in terms of [EatFirst] strategy discussions. So I get phone calls from Oliver at least every week or every two weeks. At least. He'll give me a call and say: 'How are things going?' We'll talk about the strategy.</p><p>"What's great about Oliver is because he travels all over the world and sees so many different companies, he knows what's going on in terms of food tech innovation in Asia and Africa, much more than I do. I follow Europe quite closely. I follow the US quite closely. But he's seeing everything."</p><p>Samwer has also been very good at making introductions to other food startups in the Rocket portfolio, including FoodPanda, Delivery Hero, and HelloFresh, according to Parekh. HelloFresh's former head chef ended up helping Parekh to find suppliers in London and he's even had some input on the company's recipes. But Samwer doesn't overstep the mark.</p><p>"The business strategy is dictated by management of EatFirst," said Parekh. "And then we have a quarterly board meeting which involves all our investors. Rocket, Holtzbrinck Ventures. We discuss any major changes in those meetings. None of our investors have been particularly hands on in terms of the organisational operation."</p><h2>It's expensive to play in the food delivery market</h2><p>But $8 million (£6 million) isn't all that much to play with in the increasingly competitive food delivery market. Uber and Amazon, although in a slightly different space, have billions of dollars to throw at this as they look to replicate their plug and play operation in cities across the world.</p><p>Parekh said that if EatFirst decides to expand outside London then it will likely look to raise more funding.</p><p>"London is the focus for the next three to six months," said Parekh. "Then our plan is to start thinking about outside of London by end of Q1 next year or beginning of Q2. At that point we'll start thinking about raising another round.</p><p>"Our thinking is this is a UK business, it's working really well in London and I'm personally very keen to expand it to other cities in the UK. Birmingham, Manchester, Brighton. I'm from Manchester. I think it could work really well there.</p><p>He added: "There's obviously big cities in Europe and outside of Europe that we're quite keen to have an EatFirst presence in at some point in the future. We're thinking about cities in Germany like Berlin, Frankfurt. You can take these baby steps to live a better, sustainable life.<br /><br /><strong>How to reduce your carbon footprint</strong><br /><br />You probably would have heard a lot about carbon footprint. Simply put, it is like leaving your actual, unerasable footprint on earth with every resource that you consume. <br /><br />When you drive your car or eat something that’s grown afar, you emit substantial amounts of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases into the atmosphere. From buying toothpaste to using your phone, every object reaches your doorstep after a long commute, which contributes to carbon emission.<br /><br />As modern humans, almost every activity of ours contributes to climate change in one way or the other. Being sustainable is all about limiting the resources we use and finding a way to make them last longer by causing minimal damage to the environment.<br /><br />Here are some ways in which you can reduce your carbon footprint:<br /><br /><strong>Food<br /></strong><br />While buying veggies or fruits, remember to bring reusable shopping bags and avoid plastic. <br /><br />There’s a simple thumb rule to follow. Buy what you actually need to avoid wastage. The shorter the supply chain, the easier it is on the environment before the food products finally reach your kitchen. Also, if your food reaches you from faraway places, its nutritional value decreases. Local food spends less time in transit from farm to plate. So, fruits and veggies eaten within a few days of being picked would be full of nutrients than those that are weeks old from traveling thousands of miles and being in storage.<br /><br />Look for loose, fresh fruits and vegetables to minimise packaging. <br /><br />If you are buying packaged food, you can look for products with PET packaging, which is one of the most recyclable plastics.<br /><br /><strong>Clothing</strong><br /><br />A worn-out piece of cloth you decide to throw, even as simple as a plain t-shirt, never really goes ‘away.’ – it all ends up in a landfill. According to an <a href="https://www.business-standard.com/article/news-ians/india-needs-new-delhi-size-landfills-for-waste-by-2050-report-117062500411_1.html">Assocham and PwC report</a>, landfills are brimming with so much urban waste that by 2050, India is reportedly going to need a landfill that's the size of its capital, New Delhi.<br /><br />Buy responsibly-made clothes which are made from recycled material or with an ‘eco’ label. To support sustainable businesses, you can look for stores which include options like handloom and handcrafted, organic, natural-dyed, recyclable and eco-friendly, vegan, and cruelty-free. It’s not necessary to have all of these options available all the time, but every bit helps.<br /><br />Recycle and reuse your clothes to prolong its life. You can also sell and buy your clothes from thrift stores.<br /><br /><strong>Personal care<br /></strong><br />Commonly available sanitary napkins constitute 90% plastic and India generates <a href="https://www.cseindia.org/plastic-waste-is-india-s-and-the-world-s-most-formidable-environmental-challenge-10375">3.3 million tonnes of plastic waste</a> every year, according to a Central Pollution Control Board report.<br /><br />So, for people who menstruate, there is a world of waste-free sanitary protection to explore. The digital sector is already responsible for <a href="https://www.eib.org/en/stories/digital-footprint">3.3% of global greenhouse gas emissions</a>, more than civil aviation.<br /><br /><a href="https://www.un.org/en/un75/climate-crisis-race-we-can-win">Billions of tons</a> of CO2 is released into the atmosphere every year as a result of coal, oil, and gas production. SIMPLY PUT: Sustainable lifestyle changes are the need of the hour! Here’s how you can take baby steps

<p>You open your eyes, roll out of bed, and stumble to the kitchen. What's for breakfast? </p><p>Coffee, eggs, bacon, rice, beans, bananas — so many breakfast staples worldwide are in peril. </p><p>Climate change has reduced global farming productivity by 21% since 1961, Cornell University researchers <a href="https://affiliate.insider.com?h=94f0e4dcccfadc262b061ffc92f19d115e97ad31b6da23be745a80f6f65186db&amp;postID=64b962c0f337c784f0948956&amp;site=in&amp;u=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.nature.com%2Farticles%2Fs41558-021-01000-1" target="_blank" rel="noopener">calculated</a> in a 2021 study.</p><p>But our agricultural system was already unsustainable. Nearly <a href="https://www.usda.gov/foodwaste/faqs" target="_blank" rel="noopener">one-third</a> of the world's food is wasted, while people go hungry. And up to one-third of humanity's greenhouse-gas emissions stem from the food supply chain.</p><p>"If we carry on with business as usual growing the same crops to produce the same breakfast, we are not gonna get very far," Caspar Chater, a researcher in crops and global change, at the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, told Insider. </p><p>Still, there is hope. There's more than enough food to feed the planet, said Tim Benton, a biologist who leads the Environment and Society Programme at policy institute Chatham House. </p><p>But it could mean that your favorite foods — starting with the first meal of the day — will look and cost differently by 2050.</p><h2>A breakfast sandwich may not be a cheap go-to anymore</h2><p>Most of the ingredients that go into this fan favorite probably won't disappear. </p><p>They might get more expensive though, according to Ed Carr, a lead author on the latest United Nations <a href="https://www.ipcc.ch/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">climate report</a>. Starting with meat:</p><h2>The global food system costs trillions more dollars than it rakes in</h2><p>Prices depend on how policymakers respond to upheaval, Carr said, who studies climate adaptation, development, and policy.</p><p>"No question, there'll be impacts on the production side of the things that I eat. But whether or not that translates into a price signal isn't determined just by the climate," he told Insider.</p><p>For example, current policies and subsidies in many countries encourage farmers to rely on fertilizers, pesticides, and irrigation that degrade the environment and soil. This in turn makes it harder to get grain out of the ground without relying on these industrial farming practices.</p><p>Benton argues that price hikes are inevitable because the damage caused by the industry is not accounted for in the price of food today. One 2021 <a href="https://www.unfoodsystemshub.org/docs/unfoodsystemslibraries/fss-community/chapter-2/unfss_true_cost_of_food.pdf?sfvrsn=be937a3b_1" target="_blank" rel="noopener">paper</a> estimated the food system caused about $19.8 trillion in global damages, almost twice as much as the roughly $9 trillion it brought in. </p><p>"Put simply, the prices we pay for food today do not reflect the true cost of producing it — and such a system is unsustainable," Corinna Hawkes, Professor of Food Policy, City, University of London, <a href="https://theconversation.com/rising-prices-why-the-global-drive-to-keep-food-cheap-is-unsustainable-185326" target="_blank" rel="noopener">wrote</a> in The Conversation.</p><h2>You may have to be more adventurous with foods</h2><p>Part of the issue with agriculture today is that it relies heavily on a few select species of plants and livestock. </p><p>In fact, only nine plants provide <a href="https://www.fao.org/state-of-biodiversity-for-food-agriculture/en" target="_blank" rel="noopener">two-thirds</a> of the world's food by weight — and of those nine, just <a href="https://www.pnas.org/doi/10.1073/pnas.1701762114" target="_blank" rel="noopener">four</a> (wheat, rice, maize, and soybean) account for two-thirds of the calories we eat.</p><p>That means much of the world's food lacks the genetic diversity necessary to adapt fast enough to a changing climate.</p><p>"In the future, what we need are plants that don't mind having a good harvest under high temperatures, fluctuating drought conditions, and weather extremes that we are starting to experience," Chater said. </p><p>Part of the solution is reinjecting more genetic diversity into our day-to-day foods. Let's examine this through the spectrum of another breakfast classic: huevos rancheros.</p><h2>The food system threatens biodiversity and its many benefits</h2><p>Technology could help us save today's staple crops. However, the ultimate goal shouldn't be to continue relying on so few plants and animals for our food, because it's degrading ecosystems.</p><p>Farming focusing on just one crop or one type of livestock is efficient. It can generate <a href="https://www.fao.org/sustainable-agricultural-mechanization/overview/why-mechanization-is-important/en/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">higher yields</a> with less effort. For instance, machines can harvest grain if they are tailored to that crop, freeing humans from having to do the backbreaking work themselves, Chater said.</p><p>But cropping and animal husbandry take up <a href="https://www.chathamhouse.org/2021/02/food-system-impacts-biodiversity-loss/01-introduction" target="_blank" rel="noopener">half</a> of all the habitable land in the world today. While these few species dominate the landscape, there is limited space for lush ecosystems like forests and the diversity of life they conserve. </p><p>This lack of biodiversity means there are fewer of the plants, insects, and microbes that naturally contribute to agriculture by cleaning water, pollinating crops, and replenishing the soil. This in turn makes farming harder in the long run.</p><p>Intensive agriculture, for instance, is one of the main contributors to the dangerous decline of bees, per the UN's <a href="https://www.fao.org/news/story/en/item/1194910/icode/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Food and Agriculture Organisation</a>.</p><h2>While some foods relocate, others may disappear</h2><p>As the climate changes and regions of the planet get <a href="https://www.insider.com/summer-2023-heat-wave-tracker-temperature-records-2023-5">hotter</a>, drier, or rainier, animals and plants will find themselves in environments that aren't suited to them. Some foods will have to relocate. Some will simply disappear.</p><p>Take salmon and avocado toast for example. </p><h2>Your daily coffee may become an occasional treat</h2><p>In the search for ever-increased profitability, the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-climate-change-hurts-our-food-shortages-vulnerable-to-crisis-2022-8">food system</a> has gone global. Today, a <a href="https://www.investmentmonitor.ai/sectors/agribusiness/global-breadbasket-countries-climate-change-crisis/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">few</a> hotspots in the world produce a lot of the world's food.</p><p>Let's take a look at three foods that likely traveled halfway around the world to get to your breakfast table: coffee, banana, and orange juice.</p><h2>A global food system leaves everyone vulnerable to change</h2><p>Moving the food system to a global scale has driven more competition, which has increased food production and brought food prices down. However, because everything is interconnected, if there is a problem on one side of the planet, it can affect the whole world's access to food, Benton said.</p><p>"If anything goes wrong with the supply chain — you have a disease that breaks out in meat packing plants, a port infrastructure problem because of a climate change impact, a drought, a war, or whatever — then everything grinds to a halt very quickly," said Benton.</p><p>Russia's war on Ukraine famously <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/ukraine-is-quickly-becoming-the-breadbasket-of-europe-2011-2">highlighted</a> the vulnerabilities of the global food chain. For instance, Ukraine was one of the world's main grain exporters, but after <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/russia-invasion-ukraine-was-a-geopolitical-earthquake-that-defined-2022-2022-12">Russia's invasion in 2022</a>, those exports ground to almost a complete halt. This caused a major price rise in global wheat exports.</p><p>The war may be the wake-up call countries need, since breadbaskets can easily "become an enemy in the future," Benton said.</p><h2>What's for breakfast also partly depends on consumer demand</h2><p>One way to support a transition to a sustainable food system is with your choices at the grocery store, scientists said — if you can afford it.</p><p>"The food we eat depends on the demand side, the eating habits," Toshihiro Hasegawa, who co-led the food-systems chapter of the last <a href="https://www.ipcc.ch/srccl/chapter/chapter-5/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">UN climate report</a>, told Insider. "Hopefully we see more plant-based food in the future on the table."</p><p>It's impossible to have a perfectly sustainable diet. But some foods are more environmentally friendly than others. Here are some breakfast foods experts said they feel good about.</p><h2>Today's food system isn't nourishing enough</h2><p>Eating sustainably, healthily, and locally is always a good idea. But it's not an option for everyone, because the food system is geared to sell cheap, low-quality calories. </p><p>The world currently only produces <a href="https://journals.plos.org/plosone/article?id=10.1371/journal.pone.0205683" target="_blank" rel="noopener nofollow">a third</a> of the fruit and vegetables that would be needed for everyone on the planet to have five servings per day, per Benton. Meanwhile, grains and sugar have become more affordable than ever. </p><p>This has made unhealthy processed foods much more available than they used to be, driving a dangerous rise in diet-related chronic diseases like heart disease, stroke, diabetes, and cancer. One in five deaths globally can be linked to an unhealthy diet, a 2019 <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2019/04/03/science/diet-vegetables.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">study</a> found.</p><h2>There are solutions to keep everyone fed, but politicians need to get involved</h2><p>Ultimately, experts say it is possible to feed everyone. In spite of the rising temperatures, innovations like gene editing that can make agriculture more efficient and less environmentally destructive are still unfolding.</p><p>Still, to drive meaningful change, the global food system will have to prioritize human health and the environment. That will take the political will of governments across the globe, said Benton.</p><p>"Switching out of the food system we spent 70 years to evolve is going to be a difficult thing," he said. </p><p>For him, the way to enact change is to work "as a citizen to use your political power," he said.</p><p>"Once as people, we start raising this as an issue that we want tackled, it gives the politicians the political space to say: 'we have to change the market,'" he said.</p>
