India’s second richest woman nearly doubles her wealth to $4.6 billion during the COVID-19 pandemic

New Delhi, Apr 18 () COVID-19 will reboot the world into virtual reality and after the crisis, work from home models are likely to continue and business travel is likely to be curtailed as virtual meetings have proved to be just as effective, Biocon Executive Chairperson Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw on Saturday said. In a blog post, she said mobile and internet banking have also seen a surge since the viral outbreak. The new world order will now become a virtual reality, she added. "The seismic events unleashed by the COVID-19 pandemic will have a powerful impact on the world we live in, changing it in ways we had never imagined were possible. The economic damage is likely to be unprecedented," Mazumdar-Shaw said. The world economy, worth USD 90 trillion at the start of the current financial year, would have lost USD 5 trillion and moved into recession by the time the next financial year starts, she added. "COVID-19 is the reboot button that will trigger a system-wide overhaul. A year from now, the world we will live in will be very different. It will impact how we live, how we work, and how we use technology," Mazumdar-Shaw said. To quote a recent McKinsey report, "In this unprecedented new reality, we will witness a dramatic restructuring of the economic and social order in which business and society have traditionally operated," she added. This COVID-19 outbreak is a lesson that technology has many faces and being besotted with only one application of computational science is dangerous, Mazumdar-Shaw said. "For humanity to survive, we will need a multi-disciplinary approach to advancing science and technology, combining biotechnology, biomedical technologies, biological sciences, environmental sciences, etc," she added. The novel coronavirus has exposed the huge shortcomings in public healthcare systems, especially in developed countries where they have largely remained static since World War II, she added.  It was only after getting pushed out from the brewing industry that Shaw decided to go into pharmaceuticals instead in 1978. "I guess it was on a rebound, that I took up the opportunity to start my own biotech company," said Shaw. Even then, it wasn’t an easy journey. Banks weren’t ready to lend money to someone to start a business in a sector that was still in its nascent stages. It — so it took some time before people took the company, and its founder, seriously. "I think it was a very tough time for me initially because I have to overcome that credibility challenge of being a young girl who no-one took seriously," said Shaw. The world still doesn’t get it — but it’s getting better Biocon entered the US market and soon became the first company in the world to gain approval from the USFDA for two biosimilars used in cancer treatments.  The reason for the celebration: Welspun India, which makes towels, bathrobes, and bedsheet, registered a whopping 55% growth in net profit for the third quarter ending on December 31, 2019, sparking hopes of a turnaround amidst gloomy prospects for the entire sector. She became an entrepreneur with a new business line, Spaces, a brand that targets premium for towels and bedsheets at a domestic level. Nine years ago, in 2011, Goenka shook the textile industry in India when she took charge of the company. Some industry leaders thought the “Welspun has lost its mind” <a href="https://www.thehindubusinessline.com/business-wire/forbes-ranks-dipali-goenka-as-the-16th-most-powerful-businesswoman-in-asia/article8446854.ece">reported Forbes</a>. ‘Is she here because she is a part of the management?” <a href="https://wow.outlookbusiness.com/dipali-goenka/">Goenka told the media</a>. Two years later, she became the joint managing director in 2013. A few years into the business, Goenka proved the skeptics wrong. Welspun India’s annual revenue was nearly ₹5,500 crore last year. In fact, a look at the stock price of Welspun India shows that the real wealth generation for investors happened only after she took over.

What makes her achievement special is that she has managed to grow the company at a time when the textile industry has been struggling to survive. Particularly, the textile exporters from India have been losing out <a href="https://scroll.in/article/810671/three-charts-show-how-indian-textile-industry-lost-the-race-to-bangladesh-and-vietnam">cheaper competition from Bangladesh and Vietnam</a>. One of the biggest setbacks for the group was in 2016, when Target Corp, second largest value retailer in the US, informed their customers that Welspun India sold them substandard bedsheets.

Their market cap took a steep fall of 54% — from ₹103.34 billion to ₹46.97 billion between August 19, 2016 and August 30, 2016.
