<ul><li><keyword id="277759" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Gowri-Shankar">Gowri Shankar</keyword> and his wife Sharmila have set up and run two organisations - Kalinga Centre for Rainforest Ecology (KCRE) and a non-profit organisation called <keyword id="2010968" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Kalinga-Foundation">Kalinga Foundation</keyword> in <keyword id="839580" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Agumbe">Agumbe</keyword>, <keyword id="6354780" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="20" keywordseo="Karnataka">Karnataka</keyword>.</li><li>Shankar has rescued close to 400 king cobras and trained around 800 civilians across the country on how to ethically rescue snakes under his brainchild STORM programme.</li><li>While tracking a female cobra, Shankar inadvertently ended up tracking the male who ate the female that had the transmitter in her stomach.</li></ul><br />The idea of coming face-to-face with a tiny garden snake is enough to make most tremble, but for Gowri Shankar, a wildlife biologist with a passionate love for the <keyword id="396734" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="King-Cobra">king cobra</keyword>, it was an incentive to quit his job at IFB, a washing machine company and make a beeline for the rainforests of Agumbe in Karnataka.<br /><br />Shankar’s career trajectory is quite remarkable, mainly because, at that time, very little was known about wildlife conservation 20-25 years back. He quit his cushy job and joined Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA), now called Karuna, as an animal inspector to rescue snakes. He moved on to Madras Crocodile Bank as an education officer under the mentorship of the famous Indian herpetologist and wildlife conservationist <keyword id="350280" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Romulus-Whitaker">Romulus Whitaker</keyword>. The calling from Agumbe came when Whitaker wanted to set up a field station there and needed Shankar to help him set up the field station and work with wild king cobras. He is now pursuing a PhD on king cobras from North Orissa University.<br /> <br />Gowri Shankar and his wife Sharmila have now set up and run two organisations - Kalinga Centre for Rainforest Ecology (KCRE) and a non-profit organisation called Kalinga Foundation. Anyone from a software engineer to a photographer or even an organic farmer can join the workshops held at KCRE and learn about and get up close and personal with the wildlife marvels of the rainforest. And the Kalinga Foundation has been set up as a research station primarily for science students where they can learn on-field techniques to make them better scientists.<br /><br />                                                  <div type="image" title="A STORM Chennai workshop" msid="81480037" hostid="261" caption="&amp;lt;p&amp;gt;A STORM Chennai workshop&amp;lt;/p&amp;gt;"></div><br /><em>Edited excerpts of Business Insider’s conversation with Shankar follow:<br /></em><br /><strong>What is it that fascinates you about the king cobra?<br /></strong><br />When I was young, I used to drop my sister at her college and go straight to <keyword id="130929" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Bannerghatta-Biological-Park">Bannerghatta Biological Park</keyword>, Bengaluru, just to see the snakes. And that’s where I saw the king cobra for the first time in the enclosure. I think they’re beautiful, really massive snakes. I was so surprised to see such an enormous snake because earlier, I had caught cobras, rat snakes, and checkered keelback, and they all looked so tiny in front of a king cobra. I just fell in love with the animal.<br /><br /><strong>Tell us about your first experience with rescuing cobras and your interaction with the villagers in Agumbe?<br /></strong><br />When we started working in Agumbe, the villagers were understandably surprised to see a stranger from the city with a ponytail riding a Royal Enfield  Bullet in the village. But I started interacting with them. I asked them to let me know when they spotted a king cobra around and to call me if they needed any help. That’s how it started, and to date, I have rescued close to 400 king cobras.<br /><br />Villagers, particularly in and around  Agumbe, are very, very patient towards king cobras. King cobras and common cobras, in general, are considered a god and are worshipped. They’ll never kill or try to disturb the snake. That is the most significant advantage we had. <br /><br /><strong>What have you learned from the villagers about snakes? <br /></strong><br />People in the Malenadu region of Karnataka, where Agumbe is situated, have a lot of knowledge, particularly on king cobras. So, when I started working there and started interacting with the people, they told me many interesting facts like king cobras feed on other snakes and are even cannibalistic and feed on other king cobras, which was quite surprising. We already knew that this happened in captivity, but it was the villagers who gave us first-hand information that cannibalism exists among king cobras in the wild too. <br /><br />Also, the king cobra is the only species that builds a nest out of over 3000 species of snakes across the world. The villagers told us how they build the nest. In 2005 or so, it was thanks to a villager that we spotted our first king cobra nest. <br /><br />                                                  <div type="Youtube" id="WbfLC0C23gM" title="STORM (Scientific Training on Reptile Management) Chennai Edition" thumbUrl="https://i.ytimg.com/vi/WbfLC0C23gM/mqdefault.jpg"></div><br /><strong>Why don’t you tell us a little more about STORM? <br /></strong><br />In the past decade or so, people have been following snake rescuers on television or YouTube. And without any training or practice, they started attempting to capture snakes, inevitably getting bitten and sometimes also dying. So that’s when I conceived Scientific Training on Reptile Management (STORM) -  a comprehensive training program to teach people the right way to capture and rescue snakes. Now close to 800 people across the country are trained under STORM, apart from the Forest Department, Coast Guard, Fire Department, and Police Department. <br /><br /><strong>How many times has a snake bitten you?<br /></strong><br />I've been bitten by numerous non-venomous snakes that don’t count; otherwise, I've been bitten by three venomous snakes - a pit viper, a cobra, but my worst bite was from a king cobra. I’m one of the few guys in the world who has been bitten by a king cobra and survived. <br /><br /><strong>Did you have the anti-venom?<br /></strong><br />No, that’s the thing. We don’t have anti-venom for the king cobra, so the chances of dying from a bite are relatively high. But I think I survived because king cobras are one of the best snakes, and they don’t intend to bite you. They give you enough warnings. They tell you, ‘look, I don’t want to bite you. I can kill you in 20 minutes, but that’s not my plan’, but they don’t know what I’m doing, right? I’m trying to rescue it, but it doesn’t understand that. So this was an accident. Luckily I didn’t give him a chance to inject or pump enough venom into my hand, and I reacted fast. There was swelling in 20 minutes. I was hospitalised for three days. I almost died, but luckily I survived thanks to that king cobra who didn’t mean to bite me and didn’t inject its entire venom — that’s like 5ml or 6ml of venom — into me. He was kind enough just to give me a little dose.<br /><br />                                                  <div type="image" title="Rescue operation underway" msid="81480056" hostid="261" caption="&amp;lt;p&amp;gt;Rescue operation underway&amp;lt;/p&amp;gt;"></div><br /><strong>Tell us a little bit about this radio telemetry study that you have conducted on king cobras.<br /></strong><br />Radio telemetry was initiated in 2008 by Mr.Whitaker and the team. This was the first time ever radio telemetry (a tool to track the movement and behaviour of animals) was done on a king cobra right here in the Western Ghats in Karnataka. So we were all very excited, but we didn’t know what to expect.<br /><br />Unfortunately, within 30 days, our female king cobra was eaten by a male king cobra, which is quite rare, and the locals helped me gather that information — we knew king cobras fed on other snakes, but this was a male feeding on the female after mating with her.<br /><br />Fascinatingly enough, though we were tracking the female, we ended up tracking the male instead, who had the female in his stomach because the transmitter was in her stomach.<br /><br />Another interesting thing about this male king cobra was that it was a translocated one that had moved 15 or 20 kilometres to see what happens if they are moved from their home. So this guy wanted to go back to his home. He travelled a lot, and we think we figured out for the first time that a king cobra can travel up to eight kilometres in one day.<br /><br /><strong>Are they territorial?<br /></strong><br />We are yet to figure that out, but we think they’re not territorial unless it’s a breeding season. If there’s a female, the male will guard her because he wants to mate with her. <br /><br /><strong>When you were facing off with the king cobra, have you quietly wished you were sitting safely in that washing machine company?<br /></strong><br />Not for a single second. You won’t believe it, I was in the hospital for three days after having survived that bite, and my hand was still swollen, and I said I want to go home. And while I was heading back to my field station, I received a rescue call. With my swollen hand, I went straight to rescue king cobra before. They visited Israel for a vacation after the Six-Day War in 1967 and ended up settling, according to <a href="https://www.jweekly.com/2010/10/08/man-from-longtime-s-f-family-now-a-settlement-leader/">The Jewish News of Northern California</a>. Bennett's father is a fifth-generation San Franciscan, the paper reported.</p><p>His parents are graduates of the University of California, Berkeley, and were "left-wingers" until they moved to Israel and embraced nationalism, his mother told <a href="https://www.haaretz.com./.premium-deconstructing-naftali-bennett-growing-up-to-be-a-leader-1.5225030">Haaretz</a>.</p><p>"In the US, we were against the Vietnam War. We went to Berkeley. We were automatically like left-wingers. When we came to Israel, I felt I loved the place I was living in,"  she said in a 2013 interview.</p><p>Bennett and his two brothers, Asher and Daniel, were raised in a modern Orthodox Jewish home in Haifa. A childhood friend told <a href="https://www.haaretz.com./.premium-deconstructing-naftali-bennett-growing-up-to-be-a-leader-1.5225030">Haaretz</a> that Bennett grew up in an atmosphere that was "very Zionist, right-wing."</p><p>He attended a religious, co-educational school. He didn't excel academically, <a href="https://www.haaretz.com./.premium-deconstructing-naftali-bennett-growing-up-to-be-a-leader-1.5225030">according to a former teacher.</a></p><div type="image" title="Naftali Bennett praying" height="2920" width="3893" msid="83282003" hostid="261"></div><h2>He was involved in the 'Qana Massacre' that killed 106 civilians</h2><p>Bennett began his compulsory military service with the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) in 1990. He served in the Sayeret Matkal - the special forces unit tasked with counter-terrorism missions and hostage rescue outside of Israel's borders - and as a company commander of the elite Maglan unit, <a href="https://www.jpost.com/Opinion/Wisdom-is-in-the-timing-610770">The Jerusalem Post reported</a>. Maglan is a secretive reconnaissance unit that specializes in using advanced technology and weaponry behind enemy lines, according to <a href="http://www.ynetnews.com/articles/0,7340,L-4677041,00.html">Ynet</a>.</p><p>His role in one military operation, known as the Operation Grapes of Wrath or the April Aggression, is particularly controversial.</p><p>In April 1996, Bennett was the commander of a Maglan unit of 67 soldiers. While in Qana, a village in Southern Lebanon, his unit came under mortar fire from Hezbollah fighters.</p><p>The attackers reportedly fled into a nearby United Nations compound sheltering hundreds of Lebanese civilians. Bennett radioed for support against the Hezbollah mortar team, according to <a href="https://www.timesofisrael.com/bennett-defends-actions-during-1996-lebanon-operation/">The Times of Israel, </a>and the IDF artillery fired 36 high explosive shells in retaliation. But 13 shells struck the UN compound, killing 106 civilians in what is now called the "Qana Massacre."</p><div type="image" title="Qana Massacre 1996" height="1039" width="1385" msid="83282006" hostid="261"></div><p>In the lead-up to the 2015 Israeli elections, Israeli journalist Ravid Drucker cited an anonymous "senior army figure" report that said Bennett's radio call for support was "hysterical" and showed poor judgment, The Times of Israel reported.</p><p>Bennett called Drucker's charges a "vanity of vanities, nonsense, a pile of bulls--t." Other officers familiar with the incident dismissed the charges and said that Bennett displayed "level-headedness," according to <a href="http://www.jpost.com/Israel-News/Politics-And-Diplomacy/Bennett-calls-Kfar-Kana-massacre-accusations-a-coordinated-and-orchestrated-campaign-386829">The Jerusalem Post.</a></p><p>Bennett would go on to boast: "I already killed lots of Arabs in my life, and there is absolutely no problem with that," he said, according to <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/world/middle_east/israel-says-palestinian-incitement-could-undermine-peace-talks/2014/01/06/f8964eae-76f9-11e3-a647-a19deaf575b3_story.html">The Washington Post</a>. He claims to have been misquoted, <a href="http://news.nana10.co.il/Article/?ArticleID=997224">Israeli media reported</a>.</p><p>Bennett is still a reservist, ranked as a major, and was called up during the 2006 Lebanon War, <a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20131222112613/http://www.theaustralian.com.au/news/world/thoroughly-modern-minister-naftali-bennett-looks-east-for-israels-future/story-e6frg6so-1226787697967">The Australian</a> said.</p><h2>Bennett led Wikipedia workshops on how to make the website more Israel-friendly</h2><p>After his military service, Bennett studied for <a href="https://www.knesset.gov.il/lexicon/eng/Naftali_Bennett_eng.htm">a law degree</a> at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem.</p><p>In 1999, he married <a href="https://www.timesofisrael.com/bennett-blasts-pm-after-reported-effort-to-smear-his-wife/">his wife Gilat</a> - a professional pastry chef from a secular Israeli family. The couple has four children.</p><p>In the early 2000s, he moved to New York City to launch his career as a software entrepreneur and lived in the affluent Upper East Side of Manhattan, <a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20131222112613/http://www.theaustralian.com.au/news/world/thoroughly-modern-minister-naftali-bennett-looks-east-for-israels-future/story-e6frg6so-1226787697967">The New Yorker</a> reported. He served as Netanyahu's Chief of Staff from 2006 to 2008. He also helped Netanyahu win his primary campaign to lead the Likud party in 2007.</p><p>In 2009, he became the CEO of Soluto - a now-defunct software company. He eventually stood down from the role to become director-general of the Yesha Council - a pro-settlement group of organizations.</p><p>In 2010, he co-founded a right-wing political organization, My Israel, with Zionist firebrand Ayelet Shaked. The group, along with the Yesha Council, worked to propagate right-wing Zionism online. They launched workshops to teach participants how to rewrite Wikipedia articles to make them more pro-Israel, <a href="https://www.theguardian.com/world/2010/aug/18/wikipedia-editing-zionist-groups?INTCMP=SRCH">The Guardian reported in 2010.</a></p><p>In 2012, Bennett left Likud - the party currently chaired by Netanyahu - and joined the Orthodox Jewish, pro-settlement Jewish Home party.</p><div type="image" title="Naftali Bennett speaking as head of the Jewish Home party" height="3456" width="4608" msid="83282007" hostid="261"></div><p>In 2013, he became the party leader with 67 percent of the vote and later won 12 seats in Israel's Knesset. He renounced his American citizenship to join the Knesset, <a href="https://www.theguardian.com/world/2010/aug/18/wikipedia-editing-zionist-groups?INTCMP=SRCH">The Jerusalem Post</a> reported.</p><p>He was appointed Minister of the Economy, Minister of Religious Services, and, later, the Minister of Jerusalem and Diaspora Affairs, serving under prime minister Netanyahu.</p><p>While acting as a minister in these roles, Bennett sold Soluto for $130 million in 2013, according to <a href="https://www.haaretz.com/israel-news/business/.premium-bennett-gets-windfall-from-high-tech-exit-1.5282368">Haaretz</a>. He pocketed millions from the sale, the paper said.</p><p>In 2015, he was re-elected and became Minister of Education. In this role, he banned schools from inviting organizations that condemned Israel's actions in the occupied West Bank, <a href="http://www.ynet.co.il/articles/0,7340,L-4899163,00.html">Ynet reported</a>. </p><h2>Tensions between Bennett and Netanyahu </h2><p>Bennett had previously viewed Netanyahu as his mentor. He looked up to him so much that he even named his eldest son, Yoni, after Netanyahu's brother, who was killed in 1976, <a href="https://www.reuters.com/world/middle-east/naftali-bennett-right-wing-millionaire-who-may-end-netanyahu-era-2021-05-30/">Reuters reported</a>.</p><p>Their working relationship soured after a mysterious falling out in 2008 at the end of Bennett's tenure as his chief of staff, according to <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/world/naftali-bennett-is-netanyahus-former-protege-now-successor/2021/06/02/966f8edc-c3f1-11eb-89a4-b7ae22aa193e_story.html">The Washington Post.</a> The argument was, according to Israeli media reports, related to Netanyahu's wife, Sara.<a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/world/naftali-bennett-is-netanyahus-former-protege-now-successor/2021/06/02/966f8edc-c3f1-11eb-89a4-b7ae22aa193e_story.html"></a></p><p>A year later, they clashed again after Bennett criticized Netanyahu for slowing down settlement construction, the Post added.</p><p>In 2018, tensions between Netanyahu and Bennett escalated. Bennett wanted to be Defense Minister but was thwarted by Netanyahu, who then took the job for himself, <a href="https://www.reuters.com/article/us-israel-politics-election/israels-netanyahu-takes-over-defense-job-as-coalition-falters-idUSKCN1NL1KY">Reuters reported</a>.</p><p>Bennett announced that his party, Jewish Home, would leave Netanyahu's government. The party failed to win any seats, and the New Right formed an electoral coalition with minor right-wing, religious parties to bolster their electoral chances. This became known as Yamina, which <a href="https://www.timesofisrael.com/netanyahu-fires-shaked-and-bennett-in-interim-government-reshuffle/">won seven seats in the March 2021 election</a> under Bennett's leadership.</p><p>Yamina's <a href="https://www.facebook.com/ayelet.benshaul.shaked/posts/2275277012590712">core principles</a> include opposing the establishment of a Palestinian state, developing illegal settlements, and defeating terrorism.</p><p>Due to the contorted logistics of coalition-forming in the Israeli political system, Bennett, with only seven seats, became known as the <a href="https://www.thenationalnews.com/mena/netanyahu-era-under-threat-as-kingmaker-naftali-bennett-lends-support-to-new-israeli-coalition-1.1232502">"kingmaker'</a> during the latest negotiations to form a new government. He has, to the surprise of many, emerged as king.</p><p>As part of the political trading, Bennett had to walk back on previous comments made about United Arab List chairman Mansour Abbas - an Israeli-Arab politician who has joined the coalition.</p><p>Bennett had previously called Abbas a <a href="https://www.haaretz.com/israel-news/elections/bennett-admits-he-was-wrong-about-islamist-party-head-abbas-is-a-brave-leader-1.9873465">"supporter of terrorism,"</a> but, now, the pair are strange political bedfellows. Last week, he called Abbas a "brave leader" and a "decent man" and said that the partnership would "turn over a new leaf in the relationship between the state and Arab Israelis," <a href="https://www.haaretz.com/israel-news/elections/bennett-admits-he-was-wrong-about-islamist-party-head-abbas-is-a-brave-leader-1.9873465">Haaretz</a> reported.</p><h2>'I told my kids their father will be the most hated person in Israel'</h2><p>There are few signs that Netanyahu's ousting will bring a substantive change to the Israeli-Palestinian relationship. Bennett shares a similarly hardline, right-wing approach to security issues.</p><p>Several Palestinian officials told <a href="https://www.aljazeera.com/news/2021/6/3/no-difference-palestinians-react-to-israeli-coalition-deal">Al Jazeera</a> that they expect Netanyahu's replacement to pursue the same "Greater Israel" agenda.</p><p>Bennett favors the unilateral annexation of the occupied West Bank. "We have to mark the dream, and the dream is that Judea and Samaria will be part of the sovereign State of Israel. We have to act today, and we must give our lives," he said in 2017.</p><p>He also opposes the creation of a Palestinian state. "I will do everything in my power to make sure they never get a state," he told <a href="https://www.newyorker.com/magazine/2013/01/21/the-party-faithful">The New Yorker</a> in 2013.</p><p>But Bennett has said that, as part of his coalition agreement, he will not agree to the annexation of any West Bank territory or the building of new settlements, <a href="https://www.timesofisrael.com/islamist-raam-said-ready-to-give-crucial-support-for-a-lapid-bennett-government/">The Times of Israel </a>reported.</p><div type="image" title="Naftali Bennett" height="4657" width="6209" msid="83282012" hostid="261"></div><p>Bennett would be Israel's first religiously observant, Orthodox Jewish prime minister and the first to always wear a kippah (skullcap) - a marker of religious observance.</p><p>Furious ultra-Orthodox politicians have <a href="https://www.haaretz.com/israel-news/elections/.premium-with-a-new-government-in-reach-bennett-s-kippa-becomes-a-bone-of-contention-1.9893327">questioned whether his religiosity is merely for show.</a> The fierce criticism he has received from Haredi lawmakers is, in part, down to Ulta-Orthodox parties being excluded from the coalition</p><p>But Bennett has dismissed the claims. "The ultra-Orthodox Knesset members will not teach us what Judaism is and certainly not what Zionism is," he said.</p><p>But even within the coalition, questions remain as to how Bennett will find common ground between his ultra-nationalist, conservative views, and Lapid's center-left, pragmatic approach. When asked about this, <a href="https://www.timesofisrael.com/liveblog_entry/bennett-i-told-my-kids-their-father-will-be-the-most-hated-person-in-israel/">his response</a> is simple and ambiguous: "We'll manage."</p><p>Bennett is anticipating ferocious criticism and cries of betrayal for joining the coalition. He told <a href="https://www.timesofisrael.com/liveblog_entry/bennett-i-told-my-kids-their-father-will-be-the-most-hated-person-in-israel/">Channel 12 New</a>s: "I told my kids that their father was going to be the most hated person in the country."</p><p>His four children are unlikely to move into the official Prime Minister's residence in Jerusalem any time soon. Bennett has said that, given that his kids are attending four different schools in Ra'anana, he does not plan to move imminently, <a href="https://www.timesofisrael.com/bennett-said-set-to-praise-and-thank-netanyahu-during-speech-at-swearing-in/">The Times of Israel</a> reported. He will primarily use the official residence for meetings, the paper said.</p><p>That's just as well because Netanyahu plans on staying put in the official residence for several weeks, according to Channel 12 <keyword id="6355005" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="news">News</keyword>. This is partly due to logistics, but also because the current prime minister is yet to concede defeat.</p><p>Even if Bennett is sworn in on Sunday, it may still be a while yet until Netanyahu officially hands over the keys, and his grasp over the Israeli political establishment, to his longtime mentee.</p>
