Instead, she accompanied Phoenix Mercury and <a href="https://twitter.com/marleefinz/status/1399938746863296514">Suns owner Robert Sarver</a> to Game 5 of the Lakers-Suns first-round NBA playoffs series. But when the TNT broadcast panned to the WNBA's all-time leading scorer sitting courtside at Phoenix Suns Arena, the cameras caught her with her head down.</p><p>It was retired WNBA superstar Ticha Penicheiro who then suggested on Twitter that Taurasi's eyes may have been glued to her phone screen as the Mercury's battle in Chicago came down to the wire.</p><p>By the time the Suns and Lakers tipped off, Taurasi's Mercury teammates were already in the heat of a tight contest at Wintrust Arena. And though the Sky held a 10-point lead as late as six minutes into the fourth quarter, Phoenix managed to make it a one-possession game with just 29.9 seconds left in the contest.</p><p>Chicago ran most of that time off the clock before Kahleah Copper took a jump shot that rattled off the rim and ricocheted into Nurse's hands. She dribbled upcourt, Euro stepped around an opponent and chucked up a prayer from half-court with 1.2 seconds remaining.</p><p>It dropped through the net as the buzzer sounded to give Phoenix the miraculous and thrilling one-point win. Check out the replay below:</p><p>Though she surely would've preferred to experience the Mercury victory on the court with her teammates, Taurasi still witnessed a Phoenix win in-person. She watched Devin Booker drop 30 points to help the Suns stomp the Lakers 115-85 to take a 3-2 lead in the series.</p><p>The Suns will travel to Los Angeles Thursday for a chance to advance to the second round. Perhaps Taurasi - a Glendale, California native - will head home to take in Game 6 at the Staples Center, though she'll likely opt to stay in Phoenix and watch her Mercury host the Sky.</p>

By Laxmi Devi <p> New Delhi, Apr 2 () As the country's industry takes a big hit due to the coronavirus outbreak, many companies from pharmaceuticals to textiles in Andhra Pradesh are operating at a lower capacity with safety measures and the government support, according to the state's industries, commerce and IT minister.</p><p> However, South Korean company Kia Motors (India) has voluntarily suspended its operation at the Anantpur plant in Andhra Pradesh even though the state government had not asked them to do so, the minister added.</p><p> "We have officially not asked any industries to shut down in the state," Industries, Commerce and IT Minister Mekapati Goutham Reddy told  in a telephonic interview from his home district Nellore.</p><p> Rather, the state government is "encouraging" the industries to continue operation by bringing down the number of work shifts and by strictly following social distancing and the safety protocols so as to avoid any infection, he said. "We are encouraging industries to please continue the production. You bring down the number of shifts. We have told them that if you have migrant labourers, we will take care of them and their essential requirements."</p><p> Apart from the industries, manufacturing essential goods which the central government has been allowed to function during the ongoing COVID-19 lockdown, several other industries like pharma and textile/garments are functioning in the state, he added.</p><p> Asked why the government was taking risk by allowing the industry to operate, Reddy said the state government has laid down safety norms for the industry to follow. Many industries are voluntarily doing it to protect their staff and business.</p><p> "They have not fully shut the operations but they have brought down the capacity," he said and added that the industries have been told to sanitise the factory premise and maintain social distancing at work place.</p><p> However, Kia Motors has suspended its operation voluntarily. "We have not asked them to shut," he said.</p><p> On the state's preparedness to fight the COVID-19 pandemic, the minister said the Andhra government has a capacity to handle up to 10,000 positive cases as of now.</p><p> There are about 3,555 doctors/specialists and 5,612 paramedic and nurses in the state. There are 267 COVID-19 hospital facilities with ICU facilities, while 2,012 hospitals with non-ICU facilities. The state has 18,885 isolation rooms with toilets, while 1,867 halls for quarantine purposes, he added.</p><p> "Medical infrastructure is under tremendous stress. We have requested private hospitals to provide their doctors and nursing staff as the number of cases increase," Reddy said.</p><p> The minister said the number of coronavirus positive cases is on the rise in the state after fresh cases were reported from those who had last month attended the Tablighi Jamaat congregation in New Delhi. There are about 132 positive cases in the state at present.</p><p> About 130-odd people from the state had attended the congregation in New Delhi, he said.</p><p> Sharing about his home district, Reddy said, "In Nellore, 34 people had attended the congregation in Delhi. These 34 people have come in contact with 400 people. The government has traced 103 people and the rest are hiding."</p> The Nellore district has seen a significant jump in the number of cases as 17 were reported overnight. <ul class="summary-list"><li><keyword id="10213" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Chelsea-Clinton">Chelsea Clinton</keyword> is reportedly forming her own <keyword id="6357097" type="DEFINITION" weightage="60" keywordseo="Venture-Capital">venture capital</keyword> firm, according to <a href="https://www.axios.com/chelsea-clinton-venture-capital-firm-d2a0f510-32b5-46ce-a373-2e264441fe9b.html">a report from Axios</a>.</li><li>The firm, called Metrodora Ventures, was registered in April and has its own Twitter account, though it's still in its early stages and Clinton hasn't decided whether to commit to the firm full-time, Axios reports.</li><li>On Twitter, Metrodora Ventures describes itself as "a values conscious venture capital firm focused on health and learning businesses." </li><li>A spokesperson for Clinton did not immediately respond to Business Insider's request for comment.</li></ul><p>Chelsea Clinton is reportedly entering the venture capital scene. </p><p>That's according to <a href="https://www.axios.com/chelsea-clinton-venture-capital-firm-d2a0f510-32b5-46ce-a373-2e264441fe9b.html">Axios' Kia Kokalitcheva and Dan Primack</a>, who reported Thursday morning that Clinton is in the "very early stages" of forming a new fund called Metrodora Ventures, named after one of the first women to write a medical text.</p><p>Axios reports that Clinton is still determining whether she wants to become a full-time VC, but noted that the name of the fund was registered in April, there's a draft pitch deck being passed around, and Metrodora Ventures <a href="https://twitter.com/MetrodoraVC?s=20">has its own Twitter account</a>, created in July. </p><p>On Twitter, the firm describes itself as "a values conscious venture capital firm focused on health and learning businesses." According to Axios, Clinton has committed to personally investing in two <keyword id="6362513" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="startups">startups</keyword>, including Poppy Seed Health, an app that connects pregnant people with nurses, midwives, and doulas for 24/7 support. Those investments would be rolled into the fund, Axios reports.</p><p>A spokesperson for Clinton did not immediately respond to Business Insider's request for comment. </p><p>Clinton is currently vice chair of the <keyword id="139254" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="Clinton-Foundation">Clinton Foundation</keyword> and a <keyword id="6364896" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="public-health">public health</keyword> expert, teaching at the Mailman School of Public Health at Columbia University. Chelsea Clinton is reportedly in the 'very early stages' of forming her own venture capital firm

<ul class="summary-list"><li>World War II veteran Ken Benbow has captured the world's heart after a video showed him bursting into tears when his carer gave him a pillow with his late wife's photo. </li><li>Benbow, 94, told Insider that he and Ada fell in love on the dance floor in 1946 and were married for 71 years. </li><li>After Ada died last year, Benbow began sleeping with her framed photo every night in his room at the Thistleton Lodge nursing home in England. </li><li>So Kia Mariah Tobin, one of Benbow's care workers, decided to surprise him with a pillow of the photo instead. </li><li><a href="https://www.insider.com/?hprecirc-bullet">Visit Insider's homepage for more stories</a>.</li></ul><p>Ever since he lost his wife Ada last year, Ken Benbow has slept with a framed photo of her clutched to his chest every single night. </p><p>Kia Mariah Tobin, one of Benbow's care workers at the <a href="https://www.facebook.com/ThistletonLodge/">Thistleton Lodge</a> nursing home in Preston, England, worried that the 94-year-old Benbow could accidentally hurt himself with the frame. Then, she had a brilliant idea. </p><p>Tobin had the photo of Ada made into a pillow, which she gave Benbow earlier this week. The touching video <a href="https://www.insider.com/masterchef-contestant-makes-daily-meals-for-neighbor-in-lockdown-2020-4">of her sweet surprise</a> was posted on social media, where it has since racked up millions of views. </p><p>So Insider reached out to Benbow to find out <a href="https://www.insider.com/couple-celebrate-anniversary-nursing-home-due-to-coronavirus-bans-2020-3">the beautiful love story</a> behind his and Ada's 71-year-marriage, and why he's so grateful for Tobin's gift. </p><h2>Benbow met Ada shortly after he returned to England following the end of World War II</h2><p><div type="image" title="ken benbow" height="960" width="720" msid="75364942" hostid="261"></div></p><p>He had joined the Royal Navy in 1943, traveling everywhere from Italy and Australia to the Philippines and Japan. He was at Normandy on D-Day, part of the largest seaborne invasion in history. </p><p>But Benbow was listless when he returned to his small English town in 1946, 10 months after the war ended. There were no jobs to be found, and no entertainment. Benbow had loved going to dances. </p><p>So his aunt invited the veteran to come live with her family in Liverpool. It was just two weeks later that <a href="https://www.insider.com/couples-60th-anniversary-wedding-photo-shoot-viral-2019-7">he met his lifelong dance partner</a>. </p><p>"I went to a dance and I met my darling Ada," he told Insider. "Oh how we used to dance. I used to fling her over my shoulders, and between my legs!" </p><h2>Benbow was immediately enraptured. It was love at first sight.</h2><p><div type="image" title="ken benbow" height="1624" width="1216" msid="75364943" hostid="261"></div></p><p>"She was beautiful, she was caring, she was loving," he said. "She was wonderful." </p><p>Looking back, Benbow told Insider his only regret is that he didn't spend more time with Ada in the early years of their <keyword id="6355896" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="Marriage">marriage</keyword>. </p><p>"I was a bus driver and at night I used to meet my bus driving friends and go to the pub for a couple of pints, and I left my darling at home with our two children," he said. "I should have always been with her and I regret that."</p><p>But Benbow is also grateful for their many years of memories, including the summers they used to spend in their son's villa in southern France. </p><p>"I loved everything she did," he said. "She did everything for me." </p><h2>The couple had many happy decades together</h2><h2><div type="image" title="ken benbow" height="960" width="721" msid="75364944" hostid="261"></div></h2><p>When Ada got dementia, they hired a carer, but Benbow still insisted on doing whatever he could for the love of his life. </p><p>"I did everything except the cleaning!" Benbow said with a laugh. "I used to do the shopping, the cooking, the ironing, all the beds. I was doing all the meals, which I loved doing for my wife — and it was my job to do it!" </p><p>"So when the carer used to come at night, there was nothing for her to do. But we had her come because we liked the companionship."</p><h2>But last year Benbow began struggling to stay steady on his legs, and his children begged their mother and father to enter a nursing home</h2><p>The couple refused, at first. But then Benbow and Ada agreed to stay at Thistleton Lodge for a two-week trial, and ended up loving the care home <a href="https://www.insider.com/teacher-visits-students-houses-after-school-shut-due-to-coronavirus-2020-3">and its caring staff</a>. </p><p>"It was lovely," he said. "We were very happy." </p><p>But Ada's dementia continued to progress. She died last August at the age of 93. </p><h2>The funeral director gave Benbow a framed photo of Ada, which he began taking to bed every night</h2><p>"I'd have it on my chest and we'd have a talk before I go to sleep," he said. </p><p>Tobin noticed Benbow was sleeping with the photo, and told him she was worried that he could accidentally cut himself on the frame. She later snuck into Benbow's room and took a photo of Ada's picture, which she then had created into the pillow. </p><p><div type="image" title="ken benbow" height="1736" width="1014" msid="75364946" hostid="261"></div></p><p>She walked into Benbow's room, holding the pillow to her chest before the big reveal. </p><p>"I got you a present!" She scored 29 points including 9 three-pointers. In the first half alone she had 26 points with 8-10 threes. Her final points came early in the third quarter when she banked in a three. <ul class="summary-list"><li>The <keyword id="11985178" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="phoenix-mercury" source="Orion">Phoenix Mercury</keyword> are all-in on capturing their franchise's fourth <keyword id="11896033" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="wnba" source="Orion">WNBA</keyword> Championship this year.</li><li>They'll have to find a path to success without star <keyword id="12189378" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="brittney-griner" source="Orion">Brittney Griner</keyword>, who is being <a href="https://www.insider.com/brittney-griner-russia-what-status-change-wrongfully-detained-means-2022-5">"wrongfully detained" in Russia</a>.</li></ul><p>At the start of 2022, everything seemed to be falling into place for the Phoenix Mercury.</p><p>Fresh off of a WNBA Finals run, the team managed to retain the core contributors from their better-than-expected 2021 campaign. They brought on a new head coach — someone that management believed could push their star-studded roster to new heights — and recruited two of the most highly-coveted free agents to join their ranks.</p><p>Some fans suggested that, with so many All-Stars on its roster, Phoenix didn't merely have a "Big Three," like other stacked squads boast about. The Mercury didn't even stop with the "Big Four," like they had in 2021. No, Phoenix had assembled a "Big <em>Six,</em>" the likes of which the league had never seen.</p><div type="image" title="Diana Taurasi." height="1479" width="1968" msid="91385680" hostid="261"></div><p>But then, in a sparse security screening room inside <keyword id="11894337" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="russia" source="Orion">Russia</keyword>'s busiest airport in mid-February, a check of a star player's luggage suddenly threw the Mercury into retrograde. What was once a promising season morphed into an unprecedented nightmare no one could have possibly seen coming.</p><p>Even still, Phoenix's ultimate goal remains unchanged. The Mercury want a title, and they want it this year. Only now, they'll have to do it without Brittney Griner — their longtime superstar, 2021 leading scorer, rebounder, and blocker, and biggest presence on the court — as she remains wrongfully detained in Russia.</p><h2>Coming up short in last year's WNBA Finals inspired Phoenix's top brass to go big over the off-season</h2><p>As the fifth seed that survived back-to-back single-elimination games to start the WNBA playoffs, Phoenix wasn't billed as a top contender to win it all in 2021. But once they <a href="https://www.insider.com/video-sue-bird-diana-taurasi-wnba-jerseys-2021-9">survived the then-reigning champion Seattle Storm</a> in an overtime thriller on the road and later won a five-game series against the second-seeded Las Vegas Aces to advance to the Finals, the Mercury made it clear to anyone watching that they were exactly where they belonged.</p><p>That only made it hurt more when Phoenix faltered against Chicago. Saddled with injuries and struggling to keep up with the Sky's deep roster, the Mercury lost the series three games to one and left the Windy City feeling <a href="https://www.insider.com/photo-diana-taurasi-breaks-door-after-wnba-finals-loss-2021-10">universally exasperated</a>.</p><p>For many of the team's stars, those sentiments haven't waned.</p><div type="image" title="Skylar Diggins-Smith." height="1666" width="2222" msid="91385681" hostid="261"></div><p>"I've been tense. I've had moments of frustration. I've had all these emotions coming from the residual feelings of losing the championship last year," Mercury point guard <keyword id="12250181" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="skylar-diggins-smith" source="Orion">Skylar Diggins-Smith</keyword> said during 2022 media day. "That's really the taste in my mouth. That's what's on my mind."</p><p>For the Mercury's front office, the series offered clarity on what it would take for Phoenix to climb the WNBA mountaintop for the first time since 2014. General Manager Jim Pitman told Insider he and Phoenix's top brass singled out three things the team needed to get over the hump.</p><p>First and foremost, they "needed to be healthy," he said.</p><p>"If we have a healthy Kia Nurse, we have a healthy Sophie Cunningham, we have a healthy <keyword id="12145743" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="diana-taurasi" source="Orion">Diana Taurasi</keyword>, we think there's a different outcome," Pitman told Insider. "But that's part of the game. Injuries do happen, and we all understand that."</p><div type="image" title="Sophie Cunningham." height="1666" width="2500" msid="91385682" hostid="261"></div><p>Still, watching the shorthanded Mercury struggle with the injury bug inspired Pitman to take an already stacked squad and deepen it further. More options "would allow us to be really fresh as we went into the playoffs," Pitman reasoned.</p><p>And besides, the front office had already identified two key ways to diversify how the team could dismantle its opposition going forward. It'd just take some luck in free agency.</p><p>"We thought we needed a much more athletic, big wing [that] could help us guard other big wings but then could also provide us with athleticism on the offensive end," Pitman said. "And then we thought we needed a stretch-4 who could help relieve our scorers."</p><p>Those first two points — health and two new additions — were relatively benign in the grand scheme of things. And given that Phoenix was only two wins shy of a title in 2021, keeping the changes subtle made lots of sense.</p><p>But the Mercury executives' final pain point wasn't very small at all. They resolved that it was time for new leadership and, in December, they announced they were parting ways with longtime head coach Sandy Brondello.</p><div type="image" title="Sandy Brondello coached the Mercury for eight years." height="2536" width="3382" msid="91385683" hostid="261"></div><p>"Sandy had done a great job for us for eight years, but eight years is a long time with a group of players," Pitman said. "In my opinion, it was just time that we had a new voice leading the players.</p><p>"Sometimes you have to have a little change to actually take that next step forward," he said.</p><h2>Some teams spend their off-seasons in rebuild mode. Phoenix used it to 'reload.'</h2><p>By late January, just over a month after Phoenix let Brondello go, the Mercury announced their new head coach. Most recently an assistant coach under Bill Laimbeer with the Las Vegas Aces, former WNBA player Vanessa Nygaard was chosen to take over the helm as the Mercury's 10th head coach.</p><p>"Vanessa set herself apart," Pitman said. "Obviously she has a great basketball knowledge; her Xs and Os are excellent, but what really set her apart for me was her ability to build relationships and communicate."</p><p>Phoenix boasts rookies and veterans, young role players and seasoned superstars, across its roster. Pitman knew it was crucial for the Mercury's head coach to find common ground with "different levels of players." And Nygaard, he determined well ahead of the season's tip, "does that for us."</p><div type="image" title="Mercury GM Jim Pitman (left) welcomes Vanessa Nygaard to Phoenix." height="1771" width="2361" msid="91385685" hostid="261"></div><p>True to Pitman's description, Nygaard made it a top priority to connect with her players as soon as she arrived in Phoenix. She knows she "can't lead anybody unless I've developed some kind of trust and rapport with them," as she told Insider during media day, so she made that "a huge priority."</p><p>First up was the team's most famous face — WNBA all-time leading scorer Diana Taurasi. Soon after joining the Mercury's ranks, Nygaard approached the 17-year veteran and three-time WNBA champion and asked: "What do you need me to do?"</p><p>"How could I help?" Nygaard recalled asking the 39-year-old sharpshooter. "And she told me I needed to tighten the screws here and pay attention to the details. And bring in that kind of energy."</p><p>"The team had a lot of success. They have a lot of great pieces," she added. "But I think that success is focusing on details, so I've been really focusing on that."</p><p>Taurasi remembered the conversation well, she recalled the day before the season opener. Nygaard's player-first approach has set the stage for an affable, productive player-coach dynamic right off the bat. </p><p>"That's been one of the key points that's made it such a great relationship so far," Taurasi told Insider. "It's been very honest, very upfront. At the same time I asked Vanessa what she needed from me. Whenever you bring in a new coach, and you've had players on a certain team for a long time, there are things that have been useful and things that might need to change or to be tweaked."</p><p>"I think just being honest with each other has really benefited both of us forging this relationship forward and into the season," she added.</p><div type="image" title="Vanessa Nygaard." height="1901" width="2500" msid="91385686" hostid="261"></div><p>Nygaard may have been the first big change to Phoenix's squad, but she certainly wasn't the last. Roughly one week after the Mercury's new coach came aboard, the front office welcomed not one, but two of the league's top free agents to Phoenix.</p><p>As it turns out, that "athletic, big wing" Pitman realized his team needed during the WNBA Finals happened to be sitting on the opposing team's bench for the majority of the four-game series. Diamond DeShields, a 2019 WNBA All-Star, averaged roughly 13 minutes for the Sky during the Finals.</p><p>The one game she played more than 20 minutes, the 27-year-old earned 11 points, five rebounds, two assists, and five steals against the Mercury. </p><p>"We've liked Diamond for a long time," Pitman said. "We just never had an opportunity to get her. With her being a restricted free agent, it gave us a chance. And we were fortunate enough to have things work out in our favor."</p><p>He initiated a three-team trade with Chicago and the Indiana Fever. On February 3, DeShields officially joined Phoenix, which got the tall, athletic wing it coveted.</p><p>The Mercury got lucky on the other front, too. A day later, they also signed a stretch-4. But they didn't pick up just <em>any </em>stretch-4; they acquired "arguably the best stretch-4 type of player there is in Tina Charles," an eight-time All-Star and the league's 2012 MVP who led the WNBA in scoring just last season.</p><p>"Reload," Diggins-Smith said with a smile.</p><p>Three months before the season's tip, Phoenix had its "Big Six" in Skylar Diggins-Smith, Diana Taurasi, Brittney Griner, Brianna Turner, Diamond DeShields, and Tina Charles. But the team's incredible fortune was, it turns out, short-lived. </p><h2>The biggest story of this WNBA season has been Griner's detention in Russia. But her absence hits Phoenix the hardest.</h2><p>A 6-foot-9 superstar center who has played for the Mercury since they drafted her with the No. 1 overall pick in 2013, Brittney Griner spent the first part of the 2021-22 WNBA off-season like any other. Shortly after Phoenix's Finals loss, the Texas native flew to Russia to play for <a href="https://www.insider.com/brittney-griner-wnba-stars-team-owned-russian-oligarch-superstar-treatment-2022-3">European powerhouse club UMMC Ekaterinburg</a>, as she's done every winter since 2014.</p><p>Like roughly half of her fellow WNBA players, Griner heads overseas to <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/low-wnba-salaries-brittney-griner-arrest-russia-detainment-2022-3">supplement her relatively modest WNBA salary</a>. This year, the seven-time All-Star is set to take home a <a href="https://www.spotrac.com/wnba/phoenix-mercury/brittney-griner-29940/">league-maximum $227,900 annual base salary</a> from the Mercury, though she's eligible to make more between bonuses and marketing opportunities should she stay in the US for the winter.</p><p>She reportedly earned $1 million per season with UMMC Ekaterinburg, according to <a href="https://www.azcentral.com/story/sports/wnba/mercury/2017/03/12/phoenix-mercury-brittney-griner-reach-multi-year-contract-agreement/99052300/">The Arizona Republic's Jeff Metcalfe</a>.</p><div type="image" title="Brittney Griner." height="1666" width="2222" msid="91385687" hostid="261"></div><p>On February 17, after returning to Russia from New York, Griner was arrested and detained when customs agents at Moscow's Sheremetyevo Airport claimed to have <a href="https://www.insider.com/video-brittney-griner-russia-airport-security-wnba-star-detainment-2022-3">found vape cartridges</a> containing hashish oil in her luggage. Now, nearly three months later and on the eve of the 2022 season, Griner remains in Russian custody.</p><p>Her charge carries a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison, but investigations into her case are still underway in Russia. And as recently as this week, the US government announced a shift in Griner's classification status, deeming the two-time Olympic gold medalist <a href="https://www.insider.com/brittney-griner-russia-what-status-change-wrongfully-detained-means-2022-5">"wrongfully detained" in Russia</a>. The change signals the Biden administration will increase efforts to negotiate for Griner's release rather than wait for her case to make its way through the Russian judicial system.</p><p>Griner's arrest and subsequent detention has rocked the entire WNBA community. But nowhere has her absence been more pronounced than in Phoenix, where she has made as much of an impact on the people as she's had on the court.</p><p>"That's my sister," Diggins-Smith said. "I love her. It's toughest for people like me. Not toughest — it's toughest on her family — but I love her. I think about her every day, and I can't wait until she gets back here with us."</p><h2>Vying for a championship with an 'elephant in the room'</h2><p>Despite all of their meticulous strategizing, Pitman and his front office counterparts could never have planned for misfortune of this magnitude. Not only will the Mercury be without the physical presence of their 2021 leading scorer, rebounder, and blocker for Friday night's season opener against the Las Vegas Aces, but they'll face constant questions about her precarious situation throughout the course of the season.</p><div type="image" title="2021 WNBA leading scorer Tina Charles drives on Seattle Storm superstar Breanna Stewart." height="1666" width="2222" msid="91385689" hostid="261"></div><p>"Obviously the elephant in the room is BG," Charles said during media day. "That's one of the main persons that I was looking forward to playing with... I think of her very often."</p><p>"It's definitely difficult," she later added.</p><p>As hard as it will be for Phoenix players to forge ahead without Griner, their ambitions for the season ahead have not dampened one bit. Nygaard knows that "once you bounce the ball and start blowing the whistle," her players will be "really locked in" on the task at hand. </p><p>"Our goal here is to win championships," Pitman said. "And we're trying to do that every year. In particular, we had an opportunity this year to add some players that we think give us another strong chance to win a championship."</p><p>"Obviously, we all have BG always at the forefront of our minds," he later added. "But we're going to be ready to go on Friday when the ball tips."</p>

Brittney Griner's absence could have sent the Mercury into retrograde. Instead, big off-season additions have kept Phoenix a WNBA title favorite

<p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div><p>The University of Connecticut's women's basketball team thoroughly dominated Syracuse on Monday night, 94-64, to reach its 24th consecutive NCAA Tournament Sweet 16.&#xa0;</p><p>It's all become&#xa0;very routine for the Huskies - another blowout win for the dynasty that has now won a record 109&#xa0;consecutive basketball games. But Monday night's win over Syracuse&#xa0;was different: it left even head coach Geno Auriemma speechless.</p><p>The reason? Not so much the win itself, but the team's style of hoops that resulted in a staggering 30 assists on 33 baskets.</p><p><span><span>"33 baskets, 30 assists," Auriemma <a href="http://www.courant.com/sports/uconn-womens-basketball/hc-jacobs-column-uconn-cusegame-0321-20170320-column.html">said</a>. "Take a minute to think about that. [Syracuse] had 26 baskets and eight assists."</span><br /></span></p><p><span><span>In their first tournament&#xa0;game, a rout against 16-seed Albany, the Huskies managed an equally impressive 34 assists of 43 baskets, giving them a program-record 64 assists for a two-game stretch. Even for a program&#xa0;as storied as UConn, that passing prowess is stunning.&#xa0;</span></span></p><p>"Our ball movement was incredible," Auriemma <a href="http://www.courant.com/sports/uconn-womens-basketball/hc-jacobs-column-uconn-cusegame-0321-20170320-column.html">added</a>. "All five players feel really comfortable with the ball. When you have five players who can all make plays you can have a performance like we had today. They were good. They were really good."</p><p><span>"When we move the ball like that, it's hard for the defense to keep up with that," Kia Nurse, who finished with 29 points and six assists, <a href="http://www.courant.com/sports/uconn-womens-basketball/hc-jacobs-column-uconn-cusegame-0321-20170320-column.html">said</a>.</span></p><p><span><span><span>Again, this may all sound rather obvious, considering the team and the quality of players. But UConn's performance thus far in the NCAA Tournament does more than show off the talent of the roster. It also reflects Auriemma's longstanding basketball philosophy: that above all else, what matters most for a team is good body language and a selfless approach to the game.</span></span></span></p><p><span><span><span>Last year, when UConn reached the Final Four, Auriemma gave a press conference in which he spoke at length about trying to recruit players that aren't&#xa0;overly concerned with their stat-lines.&#xa0;</span></span></span><span><span><span>This week, the clip has gone viral&#xa0;on Facebook - perhaps not surprisingly, considering Auriemma's team is putting this on display with aplomb.</span></span></span></p><p><span><span><span>Auriemma begins by talking about how hard it is to find young players with good fundamentals:</span></span></span></p><p style="padding-left: 30px;">"Recruiting enthusiastic kids is harder than it's ever been because every kid watches TV, and they watch the NBA, or the watch Major League Baseball, or they watch the NFL, whatever sport they watch - WNBA, it doesn't matter - and what they see is people just being really cool. So they think that's how they're gonna act. And they haven't even figured out which foot to use as a pivot foot and they're gonna act like they're really good players. You see it all the time. You see it at every AAU tournament. Every high school game."</p><p>He continued:</p><p style="padding-left: 30px;">"So recruiting kids that are really upbeat, that are loving life, that love the game, have this tremendous appreciate for when their teammates do something well, that's hard, it's really hard. So on our team, we - me, my coaching staff - we put a huge premium on body language. And if you're body language is bad, you will never get in the game. Ever. I don't care how good you are."</p><p>Auriemma noted that for this exact reason, he once benched Breanna Stewart, the National Player of the Year, in a game against Memphis.&#xa0;</p><p style="padding-left: 30px;">"If somebody says, 'well, you know, you just benched [Breanna Stewart] in the Memphis game a couple years ago.' Yeah, I did. 'Oh, well, that was to motivate her for the South Carolina game the following Monday.' No it wasn't! [She] was acting like a 12-year-old, so I put her on the bench and said sit there. It doesn't matter on our team."</p><p>In fact, he would rather lose than watch his players compete with a bad attitude:</p><p style="padding-left: 30px;">"Now, the other coaches might say, 'Well you can do that because you've got three other All-Americans on your team.' I get that. I understand that. But I'd rather lose than watch kids play the way some kids play. I'd rather lose."&#xa0;</p><p>Auriemma finished his&#xa0;mini-rant by noting that when he watches game film with his team, he's often not even paying attention to what's happening on the court.&#xa0;</p><p style="padding-left: 30px;">"So when I look at my team, they know this, when I watch game film, I'm checking what's going on on the bench. If somebody's asleep over there, somebody doesn't care, somebody's note engaged in the game, they will never get in the game. Ever. Geno Auriemma's key roster philosophy is becoming evident as UConn runs laps around the NCAA Tournament

<p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image"></div><p></p></div></div>On Aug. 15, extremists from the group calling itself the Islamic State (ISIS or ISIL) forced Elias Salah, a 59-year-old nurse, and about 20 others into the back of a Kia pick-up truck in the Iraqi village of Kocho. The passengers were grouped into a tight cluster and photographed.</p>
<p>And then, backs turned, they were shot. Salah was hit in the left leg, falling forward. He immediately played dead, waited until the group from ISIS left, and fled the area.</p>
<p>"I don't know who the others were. I was too scared to look around, I couldn't focus," Salah said. "I don't know what happened to my family, my wife, my seven children (my two daughters and my five sons; the youngest is only 14), my son's wife and their two children; I don't know if they are dead or alive or where they are."</p>
<p>Salah's encounter with ISIS is part of a systematic, brutal approach by the group in what the human-rights group Amnesty International is calling an "ethnic cleansing." Amnesty released a 26-page report on Tuesday detailing accounts similar to those of Salah, who was one of more than 100 people forced into ISIS carloads that day in Kocho. </p>

<p>In its report, Amnesty portrays stories like Salah's as one of many horrors committed by ISIS, the group that brutally <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/obama-statement-on-james-foley-death-isis-2014-8" target="_blank">executed American journalist James Foley last month</a>. Beginning in June, ISIS made sweeping advances to gain control of large areas in northern and western Iraq.</p>
<p>Since then, according to Amnesty, ISIS has since only June "targeted non-Arab and non-Sunni Muslim communities" indiscriminately, killing or abducting hundreds and possibly thousands. And at least 830,000 others have been forced to flee in the face of the group.</p>
<p class="p1">"The massacres and abductions being carried out by the Islamic State provide harrowing new evidence that a wave of ethnic cleansing against minorities is sweeping across northern Iraq," said Donatella Rovera, the author of the report.<span style="line-height: 1.5em;"> </span></p>
<p class="p1">"The Islamic State is carrying out despicable crimes and has transformed rural areas of Sinjar into blood-soaked killing fields in its brutal campaign to obliterate all trace of non-Arabs and non-Sunni Muslims."</p>
<p class="p1">Amnesty said it spoke to hundreds of survivors of ISIS' wrath, some of whom were witnesses to the execution-style murders of friends and family members. Two of ISIS' deadliest killing sprees of civilians came near the Sinjar region, a situation that ultimately persuaded the U.S. to <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/us-air-strike-in-iraq-isis-2014-8" target="_blank">begin a humanitarian aid campaign and a military campaign against ISIS targets</a>. </p>

<p class="p1"><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">The first came in Kocho, where survivors of the killing sprees-by-truckload say they now have no idea what has happened to their families. Khaled Mrad, a 32-year-old shop owner and survivor of one of the firing-squad-style sprees, told Amnesty the militants had promised the villagers they would be allowed to leave. </span></p>
<p class="p1">One day, they started to fill up the Kia pick-up trucks. Mrad, at first, thought he was being taken out of the village to the mountain. He soon realized that wasn't the case. ISIS extremists lined up the villagers they had piled into the cars, demanding whatever money, gold, and personal items they had. </p>
<p>"We were on the edge of a hill and as I looked down I saw a group of bodies below," Mrad said. </p>
<p>Mrad was shot three times - twice in the left arm and once in the hip. He said he and one other man managed to escape after the militants left, but the other man was shot dead about three miles down the road while Mrad hid in straw. Seven of Mrad's brothers were shot dead by ISIS, he told Amnesty, while one other survived the shootings.</p>
<p>"Those who survived have  by now made it back and my brothers are not among them. I think they are all dead. I hope that they died quickly, that they did not lie there in pain for hours," Mrad said.</p>
<p>A similar killing spree occurred in the village of Qiniyeh, where ISIS militants shot as many as 90 men of the religious Yazidi sect they suspected of trying to repel ISIS' advances through the town. </p>
<p>"IS militants came and spoke to us and said that they were only looking for Peshmerga," villager Mohsen Elias told Amnesty. "[They] asked if we had weapons and said they would kill anyone found to have weapons. We had hidden our weapons and said we had none. They said we could go home soon and left. After half an hour some 20 IS vehicles came and surrounded us."</p>
<p>What happened next, as he relayed to Amnesty, has become all too familiar. ISIS took the villagers to the edge of a hill and told them to convert to Islam. When they didn't, the militants opened fire.</p>
