<ul class="summary-list"><li>Activists in <keyword id="6355117" type="LOCATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="south-africa">South Africa</keyword> <a href="https://obs.org.za/ocas-open-letter-to-mckenzie-scott-former-wife-of-jeff-bezos-and-the-third-richest-woman-in-the-world-with-a-net-worth-of-53-billion-04-may-2021/">asked MacKenzie Scott</a> to help them block <keyword id="18635" type="CITY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Amazon">Amazon</keyword> from building on sacred lands.</li><li>Indigenous <keyword id="4578871" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="khoi">Khoi</keyword> leaders say Amazon's planned Africa headquarters would have harmful environmental and cultural impacts.</li><li>The group also wrote to Amazon CEO <keyword id="191583" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Jeff-Bezos">Jeff Bezos</keyword>, but said he hasn't responded.</li></ul><p>Barely two years after Amazon faced backlash over its elaborate public search for a "second" headquarters, the company's plans to build its Africa headquarters in <keyword id="33769" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="cape-town">Cape Town</keyword>, South Africa, are coming under fire.</p><p>This time, indigenous activists and other local community groups have <a href="https://www.iol.co.za/capetimes/news/concept-approval-for-r4bn-river-club-development-a-slap-in-the-face-for-indigenous-people-cd20aac9-fde3-4c28-a971-95271891d5cc">criticized Amazon's plans</a> to set up its new campus on land that is environmentally and culturally sacred to the first nation Khoi people.</p><p>One of those groups, the Observatory Civic Association, is turning to a high-profile source for help in their fight to block the Amazon-led development: <keyword id="9662074" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="mackenzie-scott">MacKenzie Scott</keyword>, who divorced Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos in 2019.</p><p>"We appeal to you to intervene to bring Amazon to its senses," OCA chairperson Leslie London wrote in an <a href="https://obs.org.za/ocas-open-letter-to-mckenzie-scott-former-wife-of-jeff-bezos-and-the-third-richest-woman-in-the-world-with-a-net-worth-of-53-billion-04-may-2021/">open letter to Scott</a>, adding: "If you wish to assist our struggle for justice in the courts, we will welcome your financial assistance."</p><p>London said the group, which has partnered with more than 60 Khoi and other NGOs and civic groups, also wrote to Bezos, but that he didn't respond.</p><p>Scott and Bezos could not be reached, and Amazon did not respond to a request for comment.</p><p>The backlash concerns a planned mixed-use development in Cape Town called The River Club, which would span roughly 37 acres, with Amazon set to be the main tenant, according to <a href="https://www.iol.co.za/capetimes/news/concept-approval-for-r4bn-river-club-development-a-slap-in-the-face-for-indigenous-people-cd20aac9-fde3-4c28-a971-95271891d5cc">South African news site IOL</a>. While Cape Town city officials approved an initial concept for the project, it has faced fierce criticism from many native Khoi groups, according to the OCA's letter and various media reports.</p><p>London wrote in her letter the proposed development disregards the history of the land, where the Khoi fought against colonial expeditions and land grabs by the Portuguese and Dutch.</p><p>"We think [Scott] can influence Bezos and Amazon to avoid making the biggest business mistake of their lives. Amazon will forever and irrevocably be associated with modern-day colonial dispossession," <a href="https://www.iol.co.za/weekend-argus/news/plea-to-mackenzie-scott-ex-wife-of-jeff-bezos-to-save-river-club-land-b5d45a83-09d4-4bab-9095-d3fc8383a42f">London told IOL</a>.</p><p>Other tech billionaires, such as Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg, have faced criticism for attempts to acquire land originally occupied by <keyword id="584766" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="indigenous-people">indigenous people</keyword>, with critics calling such moves examples of "<a href="https://www.theguardian.com/technology/2017/jan/23/mark-zuckerberg-hawaii-land-lawsuits-kauai-estate">neocolonialism</a>."</p><p>But the OCA said Amazon's proposed headquarters also poses serious environmental concerns and would violate Cape Town's established climate resilience policies, since it would involve pouring 150,000 square metres of concrete into a flood plain. (Concrete infilling can exacerbate the flood damage caused by heavy storms, for example, like what happened in Houston, Texas, during <a href="https://projects.propublica.org/graphics/harvey-reservoirs">Hurricane Harvey</a>).</p><p>The proposal as it currently stands, London wrote, "must surely be of deep concern to anyone who believes in a world where environmental protection, justice and heritage, particularly for First Nation groups, should be adequately considered in development decisions."</p>

<p>Vinh just joined Wildcard, a company started by Jordan Cooper, the entrepreneur who sold his company, Hyper Public, to Groupon. </p>
<p>Vinh is on board at Wildcard as its design leader and VP user experience.</p>
<p><span>So what's the deal with Wildcard?</span></p>
<p><span>It's basically trying to improve our mobile Web browsing experience by turning information into easy-to-read, digestible cards - a method that Wildcard believes is better than other mobile apps. </span></p>
<p><span>Cards, apparently, are the new "It" thing in the design world. That's why </span><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;">Wildcard is trying to create a huge library of digital, mobile cards. </span></p>
<p><span>It was bootstrapped for several months, but just recently raised a $3 million Series A round led by General Catalyst. In January, Wildcard is opening up its beta, promising to deliver 10 times the speed over Safari and Google Chrome. </span></p>

This Is All-Star Designer Khoi Vinh's Next Move, And It's Awesome

<p>Now Etsy, the still-private online marketplace, has gotten into the game by acquiring <keyword id="1777354" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="Mixel">Mixel</keyword>, the <a href="http://mixel.cc/about">maker of a photo-sharing app</a>, to gain the services of its team.</p>
<p>Financial terms weren't disclosed. Betaworks and Polaris Venture Partners had invested in Mixel.</p>
<p>The most notable member is CEO <keyword id="1777355" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="Khoi-Vinh">Khoi Vinh</keyword>, the former online design director of the New York Times. Cofounder Scott Ostler and employees Akiva Leffert and Roy Stanfield are also joining Etsy to work on its mobile apps, which design director Randy Hunt notes accounted for a third of <a href="http://www.etsy.com/blog/news/2013/etsy-acquires-mixel/">visits from shoppers over the holiday season</a>.</p>
<p>Mixel is <a href="http://mixel.cc/mixel_acquired">eliminating its social features</a> to make the app easier to keep up, while allowing app users to share photo collages to other social networks. It will also start charging for the previously free app, an apparent move to discourage new downloads short of a complete shutdown. That suggests Etsy and the Mixel team are trying a gentler approach than seen in other acquire-hire deals, where the acquired company's product gets shut down as the team works on other projects.</p>

Etsy Buys Mixel For Its Mobile Team

<ul class="summary-list"><li><keyword id="11893181" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="amazon" source="Orion">Amazon</keyword> is building a new headquarters in <keyword id="12133599" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="cape-town" source="Orion">Cape Town</keyword>, <keyword id="11992087" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="south-africa" source="Orion">South Africa</keyword>.</li><li>Some local <keyword id="12125933" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="indigenous" source="Orion">indigenous</keyword> groups oppose the development, saying it's an important heritage site.</li><li>The developer said it worked closely with indigenous groups to accommodate their requests.</li></ul><p>Amazon announced in April it would <a href="https://africa.businessinsider.com/local/markets/amazon-to-locate-african-headquarters-in-south-africa/pt1xlh4">build a new headquarters for its African operations</a> in Cape Town, South Africa. The development is slated to cover more than 37 acres, and include residential buildings as well as Amazon's new office.</p><p>The development, which is called The River Club, faces fierce opposition from some people belonging to the Khoi and San indigenous groups. </p><p>One of their main concerns is that the development is on the approximate site of a 1510 battle between the Khoi and the Portuguese.</p><p>Tauriq Jenkins, high commissioner for the Goringhaicona Khoi-Khoin Indigenous Traditional Council, told <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/reviews/out?u=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.wsj.com%2Farticles%2Famazon-faces-headquarters-controversythis-time-in-africa-11632389400">The Wall Street Journal</a> the council wanted the site to be recognised as a world heritage site.</p><p>He also said the site was one of the first places where land was given to Dutch colonists. "This is where the colonial bomb hit," Jenkins told The Journal.</p><p>The Goringhaicona Khoi-Khoin Indigenous Traditional Council and another group called the Observatory Civic Association have applied to the provincial High Court to stop building on the site, but at the moment construction is still underway, The Journal reports.</p><p>Jenkins told The Journal that his and other groups will take the case to South Africa's Constitutional Court if necessary.</p><p>"Would Jeff Bezos go into a Native American territory and decide to completely devastate its most sacred terrain to put up an Amazon headquarters?" Jenkins said, adding: "It makes a Disneyland of our heritage."</p><p><a href="https://www.iol.co.za/capeargus/news/group-walks-through-the-cape-cbd-to-protest-amazon-development-at-river-club-site-a8c83c3c-f547-4d38-ba03-9bca82bc7f16">Protesters marched against the project</a> in June, and <a href="https://www.change.org/p/department-of-environment-affairs-and-development-planning-voice-your-opposition-to-the-river-club-redevelopment-preserve-environment-and-heritage">57,000 people have signed a Change.org petition</a> opposing it. In May, <keyword id="12168001" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="activists" source="Orion">activists</keyword> <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/mackenzie-scott-activists-amazon-africa-headquarters-cape-town-sacred-land-2021-5">appealed to Bezos' ex-wife MacKenzie Scott</a> to help oppose the development.</p><p>A spokesman for the site's developer, a company called the Liesbeek Leisure Properties Trust, told The Journal it consulted with Khoi and San groups and had already adjusted the site to meet their requests.</p><p>The developer plans to build a cultural and heritage educational center at the site that focuses on the Khoi and San's history.</p><p>The Journal reported that another local indigenous coalition, called the Western Cape First Nations Collective Trust, supported the development.</p><p>Activists opposing the development have also cited its environmental impact and concerns about irregularities in rezoning, per The Journal. The developer refuted these claims to The Journal, saying Cape Town and other local authorities had found "no irregularities."</p><p>When contacted by The Journal, Amazon declined to comment and referred all questions to the developer. Amazon did not immediately respond when contacted by Insider for comment. The River Club development project did not immediately respond when contacted by Insider.</p>

Some indigenous groups in South Africa want to stop Amazon building a new HQ on the site of a historic battleground

<p>"<a href="http://www.fastcompany.com/3033130/most-innovative-companies/airbnb-unveils-a-major-rebranding-effort-that-paves-the-way-for-sh#3">It's a symbol anyone can create</a>, <span>whether drawn on a mirror or etched in the sand,</span>" Airbnb CEO Brian Chesky said, Fast Company reports. Chesky added the company looked to famous logos around the world for inspiration, from the Olympic rings to the Batman symbol. </p>
<p>Twitter, however, thinks the new logo resembles a different shape.</p>

Most sandwiches are available in double size.</h3><p>"That's four patties in some cases," Williams said. "A double Big Mac is never a bad idea." </p><h3>2. Samurai pork burger</h3><p>One of the best-known menu items in Thailand is a burger with a pork patty, teriyaki sauce, shredded lettuce, and mayonnaise. </p><p>Williams says this "burger" - which is like a cross between a McRib and a Big Mac - lives up to the hype. </p><p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">Other exotic menu items include spicy chicken, served with eggs and rice. </span></p><h3><span>3. Man who has eaten McDonald's in more than 30 countries reveals who does it best

<p>That disappointment led his startup into the arms of Obvious, the incubator and investment vehicle headed up by Twitter cofounders Evan Williams, <keyword id="194394" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Biz-Stone">Biz Stone</keyword>, and former Twitter exec Jason Goldman.</p>
<p>Here's how it all happened:</p>
<p>Branch is a website that lets people turn tweets into conversations. It started off as a company called Roundtable originally founded by Josh Miller and Hursh Agarwal under the incubator DogPatch Labs. (DogPatch <a href="http://dogpatchlabs.com/">has since closed its New York</a> and Valley offices.)</p>
<p>While at DogPatch, the team got to know former New York Times design director Khoi Vinh, who advised Roundtable on design and introduced them to other designers. One of those designers was Kevin Cheng, the former design lead at Twitter and the other was Ryan Freitas, co-founder of About.me.</p>
<p>After the “no” from Y Combinator, Cheng and Freitas helped introduce Roundtable to Obvious. Because the team had been working together for a while, and with respected designers including Vinh, Cheng and Freitas, Roundtable was pretty far along.</p>
<p>“Josh is pretty amazing at pitching. And we weren’t pitching a vague idea, we had a working product” describes Gungor.</p>
<p>Obvious said yes and, a year ago, the company, now called Branch, raised $2 million from SV Angel and a bunch of other angel investors. (Lerer Ventures, David Tisch, Betaworks) What Obvious has given Branch is something they couldn’t get at YC, Gungor told us.</p>
<p>“Even if we got into YC, YC produces a very specific flavor of startup. They have a MVP [Most Valuable Player], preferably make money off the bat, and they start with a small niche and scale up,” says Gungor.</p>
<p>But the idea of Branch was conceptually different than what YC specialized in. “Even if we got into Y Combinator, I feel like PG [Paul Graham] would have rolled our idea into something we don’t really want to build” says Gungor. </p>
<p>Obvious, on the other hand, lists in its portfolio companies like Blogger, Twitter, and Pinwheel, a crop which has much more in common with Branch.</p>
<p>After going through the initial round of investment, the team decided to move out to Palo Alto to take advantage of the wide scope of expertise presented by Williams, Stone, and Goldman. Evan helps Branch with product design – what to build, in what order, and how to simplify. Biz is on top of public relations and marketing, showing how to present a product to people while Jason helps with business operations, Gungor said. </p>
<p>This advice has reshaped the company. As Biz Stone advised, “your focus on quality doesn’t mean conversations have to be high-brow. Everything is quality to someone. If people in a conversation are having a good time, that’s quality for them.”</p>
<p>Having been successful in creating curated conversations online, Branch's will now try to appeal to people who don’t regularly share opinions online and encourage them to do just that, Gungor told us.</p>
