<ul class="summary-list"><li><a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/category/laptop">If you're not sure what laptop you should buy</a>, it's worth considering a model with a touch screen.</li><li>Both Microsoft and Google have made a big push towards supporting touch on their devices. <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/why-apple-wont-make-touchscreen-macbook-craig-federighi-2018-6">But Apple hasn't added a touch screen to any of its Macs.</a></li><li>Touch screen laptops are more common than ever thanks to 2-in-1, or convertible, and hybrid laptops.</li><li>Touch screens on laptops have come a long way but they're still held back by several hardware and software issues.</li></ul><p><em>Following is a transcript of the video.</em></p><p>If you bought a laptop in the last five years, you've probably had to decide between a model that had a touch screen and one that didn't. Some people love touch screens, others don't see the point. Touch screen laptops have come a long way, and they're finally starting to become mainstream, but there are still a bunch of issues holding them back.</p><p>Both Microsoft and Google have made a big push towards including touch on their laptops. Apple, on the other hand, hasn't included touch screens on any of its Macs. You basically have three options. You can have a traditional laptop with a touch screen, a detachable keyboard tablet device, or a 2-in-1 that can fold into a tablet.</p><p>2-in-1 laptops, sometimes called convertibles, are way more useful with touch compared to traditional laptops. 2-in-1s are great for watching videos, and even reading articles can be a nicer experience thanks to portrait orientation. In tablet mode, 2-in-1s can be quite thick and heavier than a traditional tablet, but it's nice to have the option when you need it. Regular laptops, on the other hand, force you to reach across the keyboard anytime you want to touch the screen. This feels a lot less useful than the 2-in-1 design. Finally, with detachable options like the Surface, you usually get a better tablet paired with a smaller, less functional keyboard. If you want a touch screen laptop, a 2-in-1 is definitely the way to go.</p><p>But there's one big issue that all touch screen laptops share: the fingerprints. Every time I open my Chromebook, I'm greeted by a dozen fingerprints and smudges. This may seem like a petty complaint, but who wants a bunch of greasy smudges on their screen when they're trying to watch Netflix or YouTube? And because laptops have a much bigger display compared to phones, it's a hassle to constantly clean the screen off.</p><p>A mosaic of fingerprints aside, the real issue is on the inside - the software. Windows 10 makes it really obvious which apps were designed for touch and which were designed with a keyboard and mouse in mind. Newer apps like the calculator or the Settings page have big buttons that are easy to press on a touchscreen, and touch is great for scrolling down a webpage or hitting play on Netflix. But File Explorer has so many tiny places to click, and it has a ton of options hidden behind context menus. Because it was designed with a keyboard and mouse in mind, using touch with File Explorer is a huge headache.</p><p>Chrome OS actually has a really nice file browser that is touch-friendly with easily accessed context menus, but I don't want File Explorer to change to the new Windows 10 design, and maybe that highlights an underlying issue with touch. The design of touch apps and desktop apps will always clash. Apple, for example, has an easy-to-use touch interface on the iPad and a great desktop UI on the Mac, but these two look very different, and Apple has been adamant about keeping touch and desktop separate. Windows 10 does have a tablet mode, but it forces all apps to be full screen and eliminates the benefits of using a desktop OS with floating windows.</p><p>But Microsoft isn't the only company with programs that aren't touch-friendly. Chrome OS works great with touch and even has support for Android apps, but certain commands, like closing a tab in Chrome, are really tricky to perform with touch. Touch is supposed to be a more seamless way to use your computer, but tapping six times on a Chrome tab to get it to close is infuriating, not seamless.</p><p>Besides software, the hardware of touch screen laptops often falls short. When you have a touch screen, you really don't want your laptop to do this. Screen wobble shows up on a lot of Windows laptops and Chromebooks, but it becomes really obvious when you use the touch screen. It just doesn't feel like a premium experience to have your screen shake every time you launch an app. And touchscreens are usually glossy displays, which makes them harder to see in bright light.</p><p>Picking the right laptop can be even harder when manufacturers make you pay more for the touch screen or bundle it with higher-resolution displays, like Dell's XPS 13. Why can't you get the touch screen without a 4K display?</p><p>Sometimes touch screens and laptops still feel like an experiment. They aren't perfect, but they can be really useful. It all depends on what you need in a laptop. It's important to look for a device that doesn't sacrifice the mouse and keyboard experience for touch. Hopefully, over time, the touch experience will get smoother. Amazon has a ton of gaming deals happening today - here are the ones most worth your time

So aside from <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/what-is-a-good-internet-speed" target="_blank" rel="noopener">a solid internet connection</a> - a must-have for any streaming setup - how can you play Stadia?</p><p>In short, Stadia is available on most popular Android phones, new iPhones and iPads, any computer with Google Chrome, and TVs with a Chromecast Ultra plugged in. And if you're using a phone or computer, you probably won't even need a new game controller.</p><p>Here's a guide to the hardware you'll need to play Stadia, so you can get started streaming your favorite games right away.</p><h2><strong>How to play Stadia on an Android phone</strong></h2><p>Stadia supports most Google Pixel phones, all new Samsung S phones, most OnePlus phones, and more. On most modern Android devices - 6.0 and later - you'll simply need to download the Stadia app to get started playing.</p><p><a href="https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.google.stadia.android&amp;hl=en_US&amp;gl=USmp;gl=US" target="_blank" rel="noopener">You can download the Stadia app from the Google Play Store for free</a>. Once you open it, you'll be prompted to connect your Google account, and then set up your Stadia profile. Or, if you already have a Stadia profile, you can just sign in.</p><p>Like all platforms, you won't need to download any games from Stadia - they're streamed to you over the internet - so don't worry about deleting photos to make room for it.</p><p>All Stadia games played on Android support touchscreen controls, but you can also use a real gamepad, as we'll outline in a bit.</p><div type="image" title="8   How to play Stadia" height="2000" width="1500" msid="79808225" hostid="261"></div><h2><strong>How to play Stadia on an iPhone or iPad</strong></h2><p>Although <a href="https://apps.apple.com/us/app/google-stadia/id1471900213" target="_blank" rel="noopener">there is a Stadia app for iPhones</a>, you can't actually play Stadia games through it - you can only sign up for Stadia and set up your controller. This is due to a long-running rivalry between Google and Apple.</p><p>Instead, if you want to play Stadia on your iPhone or iPad, you'll need to play through an internet browser. Here, we'll use Safari, the default internet app that comes installed on every Apple device.</p> <p>Just note that you'll have to be running at least iOS 14.3 or iPadOS 14.3. Any version older than that can't support Stadia.</p><p><strong>1. </strong>Launch Safari on your iPhone or iPad and <a href="https://stadia.google.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">head to the Stadia website</a>. Once there, sign into your Stadia account or tap "Try now" to create a new one.</p><p><strong>2.</strong> After you log in, a pop-up will appear telling you that you can play in your browser, but warning you that the iOS version of Stadia is in beta. Tap "Got It," and you'll be shown your games.</p><div type="image" title="IMG_7257.PNG" height="1792" width="828" msid="80052190" hostid="261"></div><p><strong>3</strong>. When a menu of options appears, tap "Add to Home Screen."</p><h2><strong>How to play Stadia on a computer</strong></h2><p>Stadia can be run through Google Chrome on Mac, PC, and Linux computers. </p><p>Using the Google Chrome web browser, simply use your <a href="https://stadia.google.com/u/1/home" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Google account credentials to set up a new Stadia account, or sign into an existing one</a>.</p><p>Once you've signed in, you can start playing games directly from your browser. Just note that Stadia requires most games to be played in fullscreen mode, and for some, will need access to your computer's microphone.</p><p>You can connect a controller from within your browser by clicking the controller icon in the top-right, selecting which controller you want to use, and then following the directions.</p><div type="image" title="3   How to play Stadia" height="1875" width="3000" msid="79808227" hostid="261"></div><h2><strong>How to play Stadia on a TV with a Chromecast Ultra</strong></h2><p>If you're a gamer who loves to use the biggest screen in your house, this setup is the one for you.</p><p>To play Stadia on your TV, you'll need the following: A TV with an HDMI port, a Google Chromecast Ultra device, and a Stadia Controller.</p><p>First, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-to-set-up-chromecast" target="_blank" rel="noopener">plug the Chromecast Ultra into your TV and set it up</a>. The Chromecast Ultra comes with its own Ethernet port - for the best Stadia experience, use this port and an Ethernet cable to link the Chromecast to your internet router.</p><p>Once you've done that, press the Stadia logo on your controller to put it into Linking Mode. </p><p>A code should appear on your TV screen - it'll look like a random combination of buttons on your controller.</p><div type="image" title="1   How to play Stadia copy" height="1125" width="1500" msid="79808231" hostid="261"></div><p>Enter the code on your Stadia Controller and wait for your Chromecast to detect your controller. If the link is successful, Stadia will launch on your TV. If it's unsuccessful, you'll have to enter the code again.</p><p>If you don't see a linking code appear on your TV, this might mean that your Chromecast isn't set to "Ambient Mode." To fix this:</p><p><strong>1. </strong>Open the Google Home app on your smartphone and tap the icon for your Chromecast Ultra.</p><p><strong>2. </strong>In the top-right corner, tap "Settings." It may also look like a gear icon.</p><p><strong>3. </strong>Under "Device Info," tap "Ambient Mode."</p><p><strong>4. </strong>A new screen will appear. Scroll down until you find "Stadia Controller linking code" - click "Show" underneath it. The linking code will appear on your TV.</p><p>If you're having issues connecting your Chromecast to Wi-Fi, the Google Home app can help with that too. How to play Google Stadia on your phone, computer, or TV

The smart TV could also be used as a personal computer (PC). US majors <keyword id="10387" type="CITY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Microsoft">Microsoft</keyword> and <keyword id="28115" type="CITY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Intel">Intel</keyword> are eyeing India for selling this technology because PC penetration is low while sales of LED TVs are booming in the country. <br />

</div></div>"As soon as you have a stylus, you're dead, "<a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/apple-patents-stylus-2014-12">Steve Jobs once told his biographer Walter Isaacson. The Apple founder famously hated the touchscreen writing tools</a>, totally eschewing them when he launched the iPad. But five years later, there are reliable rumours that Apple is poised to introduce its own stylus for the rumoured new "iPad Pro."
<p><a href="http://appleinsider.com/articles/15/01/18/kgi-apple-likely-to-launch-stylus-to-enhance-upcoming-129-inch-ipad-user-experience">Apple Insider has got their hands on a report from analyst Ming-Chi Kuo of CGI,</a> who believes we can expect to see a stylus released as an optional add-on in the second quarter of 2015. With close links to Apple's supply chain, Kuo has a very strong record of predictions about the Cupertino company (<a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/apple-ipad-air-2-retina-display-imac-release-2014-10">he's previously been called</a> "the most reliable Apple analyst in the world").</p>
<p>"Given that it's more precise than a person's fingers, a stylus can be more convenient to use that the combination of keyboard and mouse in some cases," Kuo says. "There, we believe Apple's stylus will improve the user experience of 12.9-inch iPad."</p>
<p>Rival hardware companies offer styluses with their touchscreen hardware - notably the Samsung Note 4 - but so far Apple has held out. Part of this may be that while a stylus is useful in certain contexts, they're not that popular as a consumer tool. Most people just don't need them.</p>
<p>As such, Kuo doesn't expect it'll be a massive seller, and says it'll likely be a separate add-on rather than coming bundled with the iPad. He predicts shipments of between 2 and 2.5 million in 2015. "But we believe that the stylus could improve the experience of users... and will likely help Apple develop specific customer groups such as the corporate sector and educational institutions."</p>
<p>Apple also has numerous stylus-related patents, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/apple-patents-stylus-2014-12">the most recent application filed last December</a>. While many of the company's patents never make it into finished products, they add additional credibility to Kuo's claims.</p>
<p>Apple <em>has</em> sold styluses before. But that was for the Apple Newton, a PDA device that was discontinued in 1998. <a href="http://www.wired.com/2013/08/remembering-the-apple-newtons-prophetic-failure-and-lasting-ideals/">WIRED described the device as a "prophetic failure,"</a> but whether it was ahead of its time or not, it put Apple off styluses for more than a decade.</p>

REPORT: Apple Might Be About To Introduce A Stylus

You have to get 'em, put 'em away, you lose 'em, yuck. Nobody wants a stylus." And he also told biographer Walter Isaacson "As soon as you have a stylus, you're dead."</p><p>Of course, Apple files of patents each year, and not all of them make their way into finished products. Some are pre-emptive, or designed to ensnare competitors in distracting litigation. But there have been several signs that Apple <em>is</em> working on creating its own stylus. As well as the patent mentioned above, <a href="http://uk.businessinsider.com/apple-patents-stylus-2014-12">Apple filed another application in December for stylus technology</a>.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image"></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>It looks like Apple has been considering a stylus for some time. The patent published on Thursday is dated from 2011, and the patent published back in December was from 2013. If Apple is working on a new stylus (which seems increasingly likely) then it has been doing so for years.</p><p>More evidence: Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, who has links to the company's supply chain, <a href="http://uk.businessinsider.com/apple-stylus-q2-2015-rumours-2015-1">says that Apple will launch a stylus accessory in the second quarter of 2015</a>. He doesn't think that the stylus will come bundled with a phone (like the Samsung Galaxy Note 4); instead, it will be an accessory for an upcoming larger iPad.</p><p>"Given that it's more precise than a person's fingers, a stylus can be more convenient to use that the combination of keyboard and mouse in some cases," Kuo says.</p><p>This wouldn't be the first time that Apple has sold a stylus, however. It used to include them with the Apple Newton, a personal digital assistant that was launched during Jobs' time outside of Apple. It spends a lot of time and energy building each version of Windows - only to see many of its PC manufacturer partners build hardware that doesn't always play nice with Microsoft's software. It ends up giving Microsoft a bad name.</p><p>Here's a good example: Apple's MacBook laptops have the best mouse trackpads in the business, because Apple builds them to work seamlessly with the Apple OS X operating system. Meanwhile, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/macbook-touchpad-better-than-windows-10-touchpads-2015-8">Microsoft has to make sure that Windows works with every single computer out there, and struggles to get manufacturers to build better trackpads</a>. </p><p>Well, if Microsoft has its way, this won't be the case much longer. With the Surface Book, Microsoft has total control over where and how Windows gets run on a real computer, for the first time ever.</p><p>The Surface Book separates out into a tablet and a keyboard, much like the Surface Pro before it.</p><p>Crucially, Microsoft is positioning the Surface Book as a <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/microsoft-surface-book-photos-hands-on-2015-10">laptop that's <em>also </em>a tablet</a>, compared with the Surface Pro, which it bills as a "tablet that can replace your laptop." Plus, with a touchscreen, it's optimized for the Windows Universal Apps that Microsoft has been pushing to Windows 10 developers.</p><p>In other words, it's exactly what Microsoft wants you to think of when you think of Windows 10. </p><p>It's something that Microsoft has slowly been building towards for years: A lot of PC vendors bundle in so-called "bloatware," or pre-installed apps that can slow your system down and present a nuisance. But any PC you buy from Microsoft directly, the Surface line included, is billed as a "Signature Edition" machine - meaning, no pre-installed vendor software. It can't completely cut Windows PC manufacturers out of the picture, because it still relies on them to spread Windows throughout the world on their machines. </p><p>So Microsoft needs to move cautiously in its new dual role as a maker of the world's number one PC operating system and as a maker of PCs.</p><p>On the other hand, <span class="s1">Windows computer manufacturers have no choice but to work with Microsoft, since there's not really another viable alternative operating system that they can put on their PCs. </span></p><p>It's a careful balancing act: Microsoft can slowly but surely try to show customers and manufacturers alike that there is a way to a better Windows experience, by showing what happens when the hardware and software work in perfect harmony.
