Terms of the deal were not disclosed. Keybase's last valuation was $42.6 million after raising a $10.8 million funding round led by Andreessen Horowitz in 2015, according to Pitchbook. Keybase has 25 employees, <a href="https://www.cnbc.com/2020/05/07/zoom-buys-keybase-in-first-deal-as-part-of-plan-to-fix-security.html">according to CNBC</a>.</p><p>The acquisition is part of Zoom's <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/zoom-ceo-sorry-privacy-security-2020-4">90-day plan to shore up its privacy and security announced in early April,</a> after the company faced a cavalcade of privacy and security issues amid its huge surge in usage due to the coronavirus pandemic.</p><p>Keybase engineers will join Zoom's security engineering unit. They will proactively identify, address, and enhance the security and privacy capabilities of its platform, Zoom said in a press release. Additionally, leaders from Zoom and Keybase will work together to figure out what the future looks like for Keybase's product.</p><p>"Our goal is to provide the most privacy possible for every use case, while also balancing the needs of our users and our commitment to preventing harmful behavior on our platform. On April 22, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/zoom-to-launch-upgraded-meeting-app-with-better-encryption-2020-4">the company released a new version of the app with a higher level of encryption</a>. </p><p>In the blog post, Yuan said the company plans to offer an end-to-end encrypted meeting mode to all paid participants. The company also plans to publish its encryption designs on May 22, and ask for feedback from other experts. </p><p>"We will then host discussion sections with civil society, cryptographic experts, and customers to share more details and solicit feedback. Zoom is acquiring startup Keybase to help it build end-to-end encryption as part of its 90-day plan to fix security flaws

<ul class="summary-list"><li><keyword id="10296" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="60" keywordseo="Zoom">Zoom</keyword> now says it plans to offer end-to-end <keyword id="207797" type="TECHNOLOGY" weightage="60" keywordseo="encryption">encryption</keyword> to all users — free and paid.</li><li>Zoom's previous plan to only offer it to paying customers was met with backlash, especially after CEO <keyword id="9011175" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="eric-yuan">Eric Yuan</keyword> said that not giving it to free users was intended to assist law enforcement in tracking bad actors using the app.</li><li>Zoom says that while all users will be able to opt-in for end-to-end encryption, free users will have to take some additional steps to enable it, including verifying their phone number.</li></ul><p>Zoom announced on Wednesday that it plans to offer end-to-end encryption on its platform for all users, free and paid — a revision to its May announcement that the privacy-boosting technology would only be available to paying customers.</p><p>The <a href="https://blog.zoom.us/wordpress/2020/06/17/end-to-end-encryption-update/">company said in a blog post</a> that after talking to civil liberties organizations, child safety advocates, and encryption experts, it decided that it could offer this extra layer of privacy while also fighting bad actors using the videoconferencing tool to nefarious ends. End-to-end encryption will be available in beta in July, the company says.</p><p>"We are confident that by implementing risk-based authentication, in combination with our current mix of tools — including our Report a User function — we can continue to prevent and fight abuse," Zoom wrote in the blog post. </p><p>This is important because <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/zoom-security-update-free-calls-not-encrypted-police-fbi-2020-6">Zoom CEO Eric Yuan said earlier in June</a> that it originally made the decision not to offer this kind of encryption to free users because "we also want to work together with FBI, with local law enforcement in case some people use Zoom for a bad purpose." </p><p>Yuan's comments were highly criticized by civil rights groups, information security experts and others. <a href="https://foundation.mozilla.org/en/blog/zoom-making-privacy-and-security-luxury/">Critics like those at the Mozilla Foundation</a>, sent a letter to Zoom saying its plan would create a two-tiered system of security — privileging those who could afford to pay for Zoom, while leaving low-income users on the free tier exposed.</p><p>Free users who wish to opt-in to end-to-end encryption have to go through a one-time process that may include verifying a phone number via a text message, the company says. For those who don't opt-in, they'll still use Zoom's current default level of encryption — called AES 256 GCM. The reason it's opt-in, the company says, is because enabling end-to-end encryption will make users unable to dial into Zoom calls via phone, among other features.</p><p>Hosts can turn on end-to-end to encryption on a per-meeting basis. For business users, the IT department who runs the company's account can turn the feature on and off for certain accounts or groups. </p><p>Zoom has faced issues of '<a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/zoom-security-passwords-waiting-rooms-stop-zoombombing-2020-4">Zoombombing',</a> where trolls or bad actors enter Zoom meetings and share disturbing material and harass participants, and has gotten a lot of backlash for not preventing these incidents early on. </p><p>Zoom's plan to add end-to-end encryption to its platform is part of its 90-day plan to address the numerous privacy and security issues its faced while its user base swelled due to the coronavirus pandemic. One of those issues was its <a href="https://theintercept.com/2020/03/31/zoom-meeting-encryption/">lack of end-to-end encryption</a>, despite misleading marketing materials that said otherwise.</p><p>In order to build end-to-end encryption, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/zoom-alex-stamos-keybase-acquisition-security-encryption-2020-5">Zoom acquired startup Keybase</a> in early May. <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/zoom-power-players-eric-yuan-security-hiring-2020-6">Keybase founder Max Krohn</a> is now Zoom's head of new head of security engineering. Zoom now plans to offer end-to-end encryption to free users, not just paying customers

San Francisco, June 1 (IANS) Video conferencing platform Zoom is planning to offer stronger encryption for video calls for its paid customers and not for users with free accounts.<br /><br />The discussion of encryption enhancements for paid users follows almost a month after the release of Zoom version 5.0.<br /><br />"Zoom's approach to end-to-end encryption is very much a work in progress - everything from our draft cryptographic design, which was just published last week, to our continued discussions around which customers it would apply to," a company spokesperson told The Verge.<br /><br />Video meet app Zoom had announced that after May 30, all its clients on older versions would receive a forced 5.0 update when trying to join meetings as GCM encryption would be fully enabled across the platform.<br /><br />After facing several security and privacy issues, Zoom in April released a much-awaited 5.0 update to its popular video conferencing service with several security and privacy improvements.<br /><br />The new features include improved AES 256-bit GCM encryption, data routing control and improved host controls.<br /><br />Zoom has announced the acquisition of secure messaging and file-sharing service Keybase, as part of its 90-day pledge to address privacy and security issues with its own platform.<br /><br />--IANS<br /><br />wh/na

Zoom to roll out stronger encryption for paid users

<p><a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/category/most-innovative-hr-leaders"></a></p><div type="image" title="Lynne Oldham" height="1800" width="2400" msid="82561476" hostid="261"></div><ul class="summary-list"><li>Lynne Oldham oversaw <keyword id="10296" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="60" keywordseo="Zoom">Zoom</keyword>'s <keyword id="67723" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="HR">HR</keyword> response during the pandemic. </li><li>The company started hiring for hundreds of openings to meet 30x increases in demand in March 2020.</li><li>Oldham brought in a new chief diversity officer who helped reshape the company's equity efforts.</li></ul><p>There aren't many companies or products that have been as central to the pandemic workplace experience as Zoom.</p><p>In a <a href="https://www.nasdaq.com/sponsored/invesco/innovation-realized/zoom">six-week period</a>, the video meeting software went from 10 million daily meeting participants to 300 million, a 30 times increase that put chief people officer Lynne Oldham in a very complicated situation. She had to increase the employee headcount significantly while moving the entire company remote and meeting the needs of this skyrocketing demand. For these efforts, Oldham was also named one of <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/most-innovative-human-resources-leaders-2021-4">Insider's HR Innovators for 2021</a>. </p><p>Over the past year, Zoom <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/zoom-power-players-eric-yuan-security-hiring-2020-6">added new leadership</a> in cybersecurity, engineering and product, and a chief diversity officer. It also made an <a href="https://blog.zoom.us/zoom-acquires-keybase-and-announces-goal-of-developing-the-most-broadly-used-enterprise-end-to-end-encryption-offering/">acquisition of Keybase</a>, further complicating the execution of Oldham's workforce <keyword id="6363690" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Strategy">strategy</keyword> as they added hundreds of new employees.</p><p>Oldham also had to keep pre-pandemic employees top of mind. These workers were tasked with handling the initial bursts of demand, as well as a sharp shift to remote work. </p><p>"Zoom's workforce was only 15% remote pre-pandemic," Oldham said. "This meant most Zoom employees were navigating a new work from home environment while also working long hours to keep the Zoom platform up, and make updates to address the needs of new users and educate new users." </p><p>One of her first priorities was holistic support for employees, adding new mental health benefits and wellness offerings, which expanded from covering gym memberships to covering grocery and food delivery, home office furniture, and more. </p><p>Oldham and her team also created "<a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=us-JUPDy1Yo">Camp Zoomitude</a>" for the children of Zoom employees. Oldham notes that today approximately a third of company employees are so new that they have never set foot in an office or met their coworkers.</p><p>Zoom announced the hiring of chief diversity officer Damien Hooper-Campbell in late May 2020. After George Floyd's murder, Oldham facilitated an "all hands" town hall-style meeting to hear from employees on how they were feeling. In follow-up, executive leaders held additional listening sessions with Black employees to continue gathering feedback.</p><p>"Learning and education, we believed, were the key to making Zoom a more inclusive workplace," Oldham said.</p><p>Continuing on the theme of education, Zoom launched ZoomTalks, a nine-part series of discussions on race in America completed in partnership with TIME and the University of Southern California where Hooper-Campbell was a co-host. Zoom also forged a five-year <a href="https://www.claflin.edu/news-events/news/2020/06/30/zoom-and-claflin-university-launch-five-year-strategic-partnership">partnership with Claflin University</a>, an HBCU, that will spend $1.2 million to provide internships, scholarships, technical support, strategy support, and more.  </p><p>For Oldham, the main lesson from the pandemic was the responsibility for the holistic support of employees and the role that HR can play there.</p><p>"We are now all working through the cracks of life rather than just trying to live life through the cracks of work," she said. "This means for the HR profession that social engineering will be more critical than ever. Understanding social capital and the nature of the remote workspace is going to be vital so that we can help create collaborative, innovative work cultures in the new remote/hybrid world."</p>

How Zoom's chief people officer handled unprecedented growth during the pandemic

<keyword id="9002874" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="zoom-ceo">Zoom CEO</keyword> <keyword id="9011175" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="eric-yuan">Eric Yuan</keyword> has announced to double down on the efforts to bring meaningful change to its video meet app after the 90-day pledge ended, saying the company would put mechanisms in place to make sure that security and privacy remain a priority in each phase of its product and feature development.<br /><br />Bogged down by numerous privacy and security issues in March, Zoom took a 90-day pledge on April 1 to make a number of enhancements to address security and privacy.<br /><br />"We cannot and will not stop here. Privacy and security are ongoing priorities for Zoom, and this 90-day period, while fruitful, was just a first step," said Yuan.<br /><br />"This period has brought about meaningful change at our company and made the safety, privacy, and security of our platform central to all we do, as we strive to be worthy of the trust customers place in us," Yuan said in a statement on Wednesday.<br /><br />In the three-month period, the company has launched nearly 100 features including Zoom 5.0 with enhanced security and privacy tools, AES 256 GCM encryption (available to all users, free and paid), UI updates (Security icon, green encryption shield with data center location click through) and others.<br /><br />The company also acquired secure messaging and file-sharing service Keybase and started building end-to-end encryption for all users, free and paid.<br /><br />"We have made significant progress defining the framework and approach for a transparency report that details information related to requests Zoom receives for data, records, or content. Zoom CEO says 90-day privacy pledge 'was just a first step'

But according to Krohn, each company helped to generate the idea for the next.</p><p>Krohn - who is now the CEO and founder of Keybase, an end-to-end encryption service - and his partners Sam Yagan, Chris Coyne, and Eli Bolotin developed SparkNotes as an online alternative to CliffNotes in 1999 while they were students at Harvard. </p><p>"We thought we could produce study guides cheaply and wouldn't have to update them much," Krohn said. "We were basically iterating over things to work on and then stumbled upon that idea and thought it was worth attempting." </p><p>They originally started developing an online site for casual dating because other dating sites like Match.com seemed too serious for college students, but when they started getting traction on SparkNotes they put their online dating app on the backburner. </p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image"></div></div></div></p><p>"We were always interested in matching people," he said. Eventually, SparkMatch became an intern project at SparkNotes. </p><p>Later on they turned it into its own site - OKCupid - in 2003 after selling SparkNotes to Iturf Inc. in 2000 (the company was sold a second time to Barnes and Nobles for $3.5 million, Krohn said). </p><p>"We came back to our half-baked product that almost worked and then reimagined the idea," Krohn said. OKCupid started out as SparkMatch, a site where registered users could take personality tests and then contact each other based on their test results. Initially, OKCupid was advertised to SparkNotes users because the online study guides attracted the same demographic and many SparkNote customers had used that beta version of SparkMatch. In 2010, OKCupid was (ironically) <a href="https://www.iac.com/media-room/press-releases/iacs-matchcom-acquires-okcupid">sold for over $50 million to IAC</a>, the owner of Match.com.</p><p>Around the time that OKCupid was sold, it dawned on Krohn and his partners that people using apps - like OKCupid - were giving up a lot of personal data and trusting companies to protect it. "We started with that insight and thought about how to build a company to protect data," he said. Thus Keybase was born.</p><p>Coming up with award-winning, money-making business ideas like Krohn did (three times!) isn't something only certain people can accomplish. Anyone can do it - if they follow these tips, courtesy of expert founders and business owners.</p><h1>Solve a problem that interests or bothers you</h1><p>Most entrepreneurs admit that their ideas were born out of problems they encountered or saw others struggle with. For example, Jason Brown, the CEO of <a href="https://www.meettally.com/">Tally</a>, said the idea to create a personal finance app that helps customers pay off their credit cards was inspired by his childhood. Tally currently manages nearly half a billion dollars of consumer credit card debt. </p><p>"Growing up, there was a good amount of financial stress and anxiety," said Brown. </p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image"></div></div></div></p><p>That memory of his family's financial burdens was always in the back of his mind. Then Brown noticed how automation was becoming more prevalent, and he wondered what role automation would play in the next 20 years. He combined those two thoughts and came up with the idea to create an intelligent banking service that could take the emotional burden out of managing finances. </p><p>Brown said that his formula for coming up with winning ideas is to consider what interests you, look for a big trend shaping our human experience, and then think about how that trend intersects with your interests. </p><p>"My cofounder and I decided to try to find the widest unsolved problem first," Brown said. We wanted to focus on the emotional experience people have with their money."</p><h1>Build off of an already successful idea</h1><p>One of the easiest ways to come up with new business ideas is to leverage an already existing venture, much like TV studios spin off of their most popular TV shows and turn them into movies, merchandise, and other offerings to grow their audience.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image"></div></div></div></p><p>"Serial entrepreneurs are always thinking about how to spin off an already successful idea into another thriving business model," explained Leeron Cohen, cofounder and CEO of <a href="https://www.lamediagrp.com/">LA Media Group</a>, a digital marketing agency in Hollywood, FL, <a href="https://clipsgarage.com/">Clips Garage</a>, a video, photo, and illustration library, and <a href="https://www.countlesscreatives.com/">Countless Creatives</a>, a custom video and graphic design studio. </p><p>This is exactly what Cohen did when developing his three businesses. He started with LA Media Group, and after seeing the success of that company spun off The Clips Garage to help businesses with videography and photography, and then created Countless Creatives to provide businesses with graphic design support.</p><h1>Improve a product</h1><p>Gary Nealon, who grew his company <a href="https://www.thertastore.com/kitchen-cabinets/rta-kitchen-cabinets.html">RTA Cabinet Store</a> to $40 million before exiting, recommended thinking critically about the products you're currently using - and considering why you use them, if you're satisfied with them, and whether they could be improved. He also suggested reading product reviews. </p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image"></div></div></div></p><p>"Are people commonly reporting issues and problems that you could solve?" he asked. Then make a better version. This is the strategy Nealon employed when he developed his ready-to-assemble, customizable kitchen cabinets, providing home-improvement aficionados another option for remodeling their kitchens. </p><p>It's important to remember that your business ideas don't necessarily have to be groundbreaking. "You don't need a revolutionary idea or disruptive patentable technology to launch a business," said Jon Richards, cofounder of <a href="https://www.nomatic.com/">Nomatic.com</a>, a travel accessories company. "You just need to be able to do something better, faster, or cheaper than everyone else." </p><p>Richards and his cousin Jacob Durham entered the travel accessories business by designing an innovative slim wallet that gives users easy access to their four most-used credit cards via a pull tab. </p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image"></div></div></div></p><p>And you don't need to re-invent a product as long as you solve a long-standing, common problem with it, said Miguel Madrid, founder and CEO of Perk Apparel, an online men's apparel company. </p><p>"It's about pointing out the problem in a customer's life, how your product will solve that problem, and how they'll be the hero of their own story by purchasing your product," he said. </p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image"></div></div></div></p><p>The idea to start Perk Apparel came to Madrid after trying on his first pair of expensive underwear. He liked how they felt, but he didn't want to spend $300 stocking up on underwear. "Perk was born as an elevated basics brand for busy men who need reliable, all-day comfort," said Madrid, who runs a lean, three-person operation with over $100,000 in monthly sales. </p><h1>Look out for social trends</h1><p>Elizabeth Babinski - who is the founder of <a href="https://lizraeweddings.com/">Liz Rae Weddings</a>, an agency offering nondenominational ministers who create unique wedding ceremonies, Vows Well Traveled, an agency that plans elopement vacations, and Storytelling for Digital Nomads, an online storytelling course - pays "close attention to social media, specifically Facebook groups, to find new ideas or aspects people complain about." </p><p>"A lot of people don't realize that social trends and business opportunities are actually deeply intertwined," said Peter Yared, the former CTO and CIO of CBS Interactive and a seven-time founder with more than $500 million in exits to companies such as Sun, Oracle, and VMware. </p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image"></div></div></div></p><p>For instance, Yared developed Sapho, which was acquired by software company <a href="https://www.citrix.com/">Citrix</a> for $225 million, based on the social trend that millennials prefer to use an app for daily tasks. Sapho allows employees to file expense reports or request time off via app rather than through legacy time-and-attendance software. </p><p>Transpond, a business platform for creating quizzes and sweepstakes to engage customers, was based on Yared's 2007 observation that consumers enjoyed sharing content with friends over Facebook. Transpond was eventually acquired by Webtrends and renamed "Webtrends Social," and then acquired by Oracle.</p><h1>Use your hobbies as inspiration</h1><p>Robert Wray, currently the founder of ecommerce company <a href="https://www.whitebox.co/">Whitebox</a>, advised that aspiring business owners dive into their hobbies for inspiration. </p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image"></div></div></div></p><p>"Patterns will emerge if you think through the lens of what businesses could exist" to support that hobby, he explained. Plus, this ensures you actually enjoy working on your idea. His first company, Mp3car, a forum and ecommerce store that sold hard-to-find electronic parts, was developed from Wray's interest in listening to digital audio in his car before the advent of streaming services. </p><h1>Whenever something comes to mind, write it down</h1><p>Some entrepreneurs look inward for ideas. Babinski develops hers through daily journaling. </p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image"></div></div></div></p><p>"I'll review the journal entries weekly to comb through frustration points, things I noticed, or other items that stick out to find solutions," she said. Her idea for Liz Rae Weddings stemmed from her experience as a wedding officiant. She didn't like how she was treated by other vendors when she arrived at weddings and decided she wanted to be more involved in the vision for the weddings she officiated.  </p><p>Mike Myer, the founder and CEO of <a href="https://goquiq.com/">Quiq</a>, a text messaging platform for businesses, keeps a running list of ideas on his phone as they pop into his head and then finds time to sit down and rank the list in order of viable business ideas. </p><p>"Let the ideas find you as you go about your life and current career," he said.  "Be inquisitive and open minded and, over time, the ideas will appear."</p>

<ul class="summary-list"><li><keyword id="10296" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="60" keywordseo="Zoom">Zoom</keyword> reported 355% revenue growth from a year prior in its second quarter <keyword id="6357061" type="SPONSORED" weightage="60" keywordseo="earnings">earnings</keyword> on Monday.</li><li>Zoom's business has grown tremendously this year due to the coronavirus pandemic and the subsequent <keyword id="1591611" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="remote-work">remote work</keyword> mandates. </li><li>The second quarter's beat follows <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/zoom-doubled-guidance-earnings-growth-risks-competition-analysts-2020-6">Zoom's blockbuster Q1 earnings report in June</a>, when it reported 169% revenue growth from a year prior. </li></ul><p>Zoom stock rose roughly 23% after-hours on Monday after its second quarter earnings soared past Wall Street's estimates on both the top and bottom line.</p><p>Zoom's business has grown tremendously this year due to the coronavirus pandemic and the subsequent remote work mandates, and its revenue in Q2 grew a stunning 355% from a year prior. The second quarter's beat follows <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/zoom-doubled-guidance-earnings-growth-risks-competition-analysts-2020-6">Zoom's blockbuster first quarter earnings report in June</a>, and blows past the 169% year-over-year revenue growth it reported in Q1. </p><p>Zoom reported revenue of $663.5 million in its second quarter, much higher than the $500.2 million analysts forecasted. Meanwhile, it reported earnings per share of $0.92, surpassing analyst expectations of $0.45. Zoom also raised its full-year revenue guidance by about $590 million, to between $2.37 billion and $2.39 billion. It previously forecasted between $1.78 billion and $1.80 billion in full-year revenue. The new guidance takes into account the increase in remote work and the likelihood of a higher number of customers paying on a monthly basis in the second half of the year, Zoom said. </p><p>Its number of large customers also increased, with 988 customers paying over $100,000 in trailing 12 months revenue. In the first quarter, Zoom reported 769 large customers. CEO <keyword id="9011175" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="eric-yuan">Eric Yuan</keyword> called out new deals with ExxonMobil and Activision Blizzard as new customer wins in a call with analysts. 81% of the revenue growth can be attributed to new customer subscriptions in the quarter, CFO Kelly Steckelberg said on the call. </p><p>"Organizations are shifting from addressing their immediate business continuity needs to supporting a future of working anywhere, learning anywhere, and connecting anywhere on Zoom's video-first platform," Yuan said in an earnings release.</p><p>Zoom's valuation has surged this year: Even before the earnings on Monday, its stock was up more than 340% for the year to-date.</p><p>Still, it hasn't been all good news. After <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/zoom-facing-multiple-reported-security-issues-amid-coronavirus-crisis-2020-4">a spat of security blunders in the spring</a>, Zoom faced backlash earlier this summer over its initial plan to only provide end-to-end encryption to paid users. It eventually <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/zoom-end-to-end-encryption-update-all-free-paid-users-2020-6">revised those plans to provide it to all users</a>.</p><p>Then, in August, it <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/zoom-stop-direct-sales-mainland-china-partner-only-model-2020-8">halted direct sales of its video conferencing products in mainland China</a>, and decided to only offer its technology through a few third-party partners. The decision came as Zoom's surge in popularity has led to scrutiny of its ties to China, though Zoom didn't cite that as the reason for the change. When asked on the earnings call what impact this would have on the company, Yuan said that it has had almost no impact on revenue, and that the decision was tied to simplifying its go-to-market model in China. Zoom also has a large research and development team in the country. </p><p>Zoom also brought on some <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/zoom-power-players-eric-yuan-security-hiring-2020-6">new leaders in the second quarter</a>, including Jason Lee as its new chief information security officer, VMware veteran Velchamy Sankarlingam as its new president of engineering and product, and Damien Hooper-Campbell as its chief diversity officer. Zoom also acquired secure messaging startup Keybase in early May to help it build end-to-end encryption into its product, with cofounder and CEO Max Krohn becoming Zoom's new head of security engineering. Earlier this month it also hired Jeff True as its new general counsel after promoting Aparna Bawa to chief operating officer in May.</p><p>In May, it also announced plans to <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/zoom-cfo-hiring-500-engineers-phoenix-pittsburgh-remote-work-2020-5">build two new R&amp;D centers in Phoenix and Pittsburgh</a>, to hire a combined 500 new engineers over the next several years. It has also been expanding its hardware offerings, including a new $600 screen dedicated for Zoom calls, and plans to add Zoom capabilities to <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/zoom-for-home-smart-display-device-facebook-amazon-google-2020-8">smart devices like Amazon Echo Shows and Facebook Portals</a>.  </p><p><strong>Here are the most important numbers:</strong></p><ul><li>Revenue: $663.5 million. Then again, after seeing the video of a quadruped Boston Dynamics bot <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/roaming-robodog-politely-tells-singapore-park-goers-to-keep-apart-2020-5">roaming a park in Singapore</a> and urging residents to social distance, I'm on the lookout for the unexpected.</p><h2><a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/chamath-palihapitiya-second-act-spac-2020-5">Chamath 2.0 </a></h2><p><a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/chamath-palihapitiya-second-act-spac-2020-5"><div type="image" title="chamath palihapitiya profile controversial silicon valley 4x3" height="1501" width="2001" msid="75721171" hostid="261"></div></a></p><p>Speaking of unexpected appearances, the return of <keyword id="229877" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Chamath-Palihapitiya">Chamath Palihapitiya</keyword> is quickly becoming a fascinating Silicon Valley subplot of the coronavirus crisis. The outspoken 43-year-old tech investor and early Facebook exec's venture capital firm <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/social-capital-finger-pointing-chamath-palihapityia-limited-partners-2018-9">imploded in 2018, with some insiders blaming Palihapitiya's ego and scattershot strategy</a>. Now, as Melia Russell reports in a must-read feature story, Palihapitiya is back and having a moment. </p><p><strong>1. In recent weeks Palihapitiya has taken two companies public, raising nearly $1.1 billion,</strong> at a time when the rest of the tech industry recoils from the public markets.</p><p>Note that there were only 9 IPOs in the US in April. Palihapitiya did 2 of them.</p><p><strong>2. The companies he's taken public are Special Purpose Acquisition Companies, or SPACs</strong>. These are essentially shell companies, bankrolled by investors to carry out a mission of finding and acquiring a promising business.</p><p>In other words: Investors are writing a blank check to the person whose last venture collapsed in a cloud of acrimony. </p><p>It's too early to call this a comeback story. <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/chamath-palihapitiya-second-act-spac-2020-5">But it's certainly a page turner.</a></p><h2><keyword id="107096" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Tesla">Tesla</keyword> and <keyword id="18635" type="CITY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Amazon">Amazon</keyword> have something in common</h2><p><div type="image" title="Elon Musk, Tesla factory" height="900" width="1200" msid="75721175" hostid="261"></div></p><p>The standoff between <keyword id="6355315" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="elon-musk">Elon Musk</keyword> and the local authorities makes for great theater, but it's worth remembering that there are real people involved here. Workers at Tesla's auto plant in Fremont, California, told Business Insider that <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/tesla-asks-employees-back-to-work-despite-shelter-in-place-order-2020-5">they're worried that if they don't return to the assembly line they'll lose their jobs. </a></p><p>We've already seen plenty of evidence that working in industrial facilities, like factories and warehouses, carries real risks of contracting the virus. Musk only needs to drive 38 miles (about 15% of a Tesla Model 3's range) from his Fremont factory to the Amazon warehouse in Tracy, California, to see this first-hand. Amazon confirmed last month that a worker at that facility died of COVID-19. As chief tech correspondent Julie Bort previously reported, there are more than <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/workers-say-amazon-hasnt-shared-full-covid-19-cases-with-employees-2020-4">600 Amazon warehouse workers across the US with confirmed coronavirus infections.</a></p><p>Until now, Amazon has had some political cover (despite taking heat from Congress) because the company could argue that the risks of infection at its warehouses were being borne in order to provide Americans with "essential services" like delivering food and toilet paper. </p><p>As Eugene Kim reports, however, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/amazon-lifts-quantity-limits-on-seller-shipments-to-its-warehouses-2020-5">Amazon has quietly begun lifting the quantity limits it had imposed on merchants</a> shipping non-essentials goods to its warehouses (think electronics and sneakers). It's part of Amazon's plan to return to normal.</p><p>That means the justification for Amazon workers to punch in everyday and risk virus exposure will be closer to the reasoning espoused by Musk for his Tesla factory workers: It's not about heroic frontline workers providing essential services anymore, it's just about getting back to business.</p><p>That approach may resonate with certain audiences. From Airbnb to Zoom, tech CEOs see a brave new, post-coronavirus world

<p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div><ul><li><strong>Facebook has investigated and reportedly fired an employee who was&#xa0;a</strong><strong>ccused of using his privileges to "stalk women" online.</strong></li><li><strong>Cybersecurity expert Jackie Stokes made the claim about the Facebook engineer on Twitter, citing "Tinder logs" she had been passed by a source.</strong></li><li><strong>Facebook said it had a "zero-tolerance" approach to abuse and it fires anyone it deems guilty of "improper behavior."</strong></li></ul><p><br>Facebook has reportedly fired an employee accused of using his privileges to stalk women online.</br></p><p>The company launched an investigation into a&#xa0;<a href="https://twitter.com/find_evil/status/990800499447353345" target="_blank" rel="noopener">claim made by&#xa0;cybersecurity expert Jackie Stokes</a>, who said the individual was a security engineer and "likely using privileged access" to find women.</p><p>In a thread of tweets, Stokes said she had confirmed the man works at Facebook through his Tinder profile, LinkedIn, and through Facebook's outgoing chief security officer Alex Stamos' connections on encryption key directory Keybase.io.</p><p>Stokes,&#xa0;the founder of cybersecurity consultancy Spyglass Security, tweeted what appeared to be a screenshot of a conversation between the individual and her source. She did not say where the conversation took place, but in a separate tweet said she had "Tinder logs."</p><p>Just hours after investigating the claims, the employee was fired, <a href="https://twitter.com/josephfcox/status/991541113315000322" target="_blank" rel="noopener">according to Motherboard reporter Joseph Cox</a>. Business Insider has contacted Facebook for comment.&#xa0;</p><p>In a statement confirming it was looking into the matter on Tuesday, Facebook said it does not tolerate abuse of its platform.</p><p>A spokesman said: "We maintain strict technical controls and policies to restrict employee access to user data. Access is scoped by job function, and designated employees are only allowed to access the amount of information that's necessary to carry out their job responsibilities, such as responding to bug reports, account support inquiries, or valid legal requests. We have a zero-tolerance approach to abuse, and improper behavior results in termination."</p><p>It's not clear how exactly the Facebook staffer might have used his access to the platform to track women down online. Facebook has reportedly fired an employee accused of using privileged access to 'stalk women' on Tinder

<p>Professor Nicolas Gisin of Université de Genève in Switzerland is an accomplished experimental physicist who took some time to talk to us this afternoon about quantum communication and cryptography,<span style="line-height: 1.5em;"> technologies that make it possible for us to send messages in a </span><em style="line-height: 1.5em;">truly</em><span style="line-height: 1.5em;"> unbreakable code. </span></p>
<p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">Here's how it works.</span></p>
<p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">(It will help to <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/edward-snowden-email-encryption-works-against-the-nsa-2013-6">brush up on key-based encryption methods like PGP</a>, which can help you send encrypted emails, to follow this effectively.)</span></p>
<p>"Quantum communication" is the name for what happens when we send a <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Quantum_state">quantum state</a> from one place to another. This means that we are taking all the characteristics of one particle and forcing them onto a new particle some distance away. A quantum state cannot be copied, so in transferring it like this the original is necessarily destroyed.</p>
<p>Let's use teleportation as an analogy here. If you were somehow able to teleport yourself to another room, this doesn't generate a clone of yourself. Whatever "you" was in the first room no longer exists, because it's now in the new room.</p>
<p>In the same way that you can't duplicate yourself, scientists can't duplicate a quantum state. <span style="line-height: 1.5em;">This is the essential mechanism for quantum <keyword id="207797" type="TECHNOLOGY" weightage="60" keywordseo="encryption">encryption</keyword>.</span></p>
<p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">Gisin defines quantum encryption as "classical encryption based on keys shared using quantum <keyword id="55984" type="CITY" weightage="60" keywordseo="physics">physics</keyword>." This c</span><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">lassical key-based encryption makes use of a seemingly random string of characters that are actually computer instructions for encoding and decoding a message.</span></p>
<p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">If Bill wants to email Fred, he'll type out his message and encrypt </span><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">it with a key. He'll send the encrypted message and the relevant key (or keys) to Fred, who can then easily decrypt it.</span></p>
<p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">Quantum encryption functions almost exactly this way, except we share keys using powerful techniques from quantum physics. Your data can be transmitted via individual photons of light.</span></p>
<p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">Remember, one of the foundations of quantum mechanics is that the very act of measuring or observing something changes it. If an unauthorized third party were to somehow intercept a quantum key (which is incredibly difficult), it would be changed as a direct result. The third party now has a message he can't read and the two people originally in communication with each other would instantly know so.</span></p>
<p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">If you were a malicious hacker type wanting to snag someone's quantum message, you'd have to catch the photons carrying that message in real time. Good luck with that. Even if you were successful, as an unauthorized recipient, the data would change as soon as you accessed it.</span></p>

How Quantum Computing Can Help You Send Secret Emails No One Can Crack

<p><strong><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Morten Brøgger/Wire</span></p><p class="caption">New Wire CEO and former Huddle CEO Morten Brøgger</p></div><p></p></div></div></strong></p><ul><li><strong>Morten Brøgger is the former chief executive of Huddle, a rival to Box and Dropbox, and oversaw its sale to private equity firm Turn/River last year.</strong></li><li><strong>Brøgger has now joined Wire, an encrypted messaging startup backed by Skype cofounder Janus Friis.</strong></li><li><strong>Wire launched as an encrypted video and messaging app for consumers, but has pivoted to focus on secure enterprise messaging.</strong></li><li><strong>Brøgger has a track record of becoming CEO of a firm, then overseeing its sale - but he thinks this is a long way off for Wire.</strong></li><li><strong>In an interview with Business Insider, Brøgger gave more detail on the Huddle sale, and outlined his plans to turn Wire into a secure rival to Slack.</strong></li></ul><p><br />Last time Business Insider wrote about Morten Brøgger, he<a href="http://uk.businessinsider.com/huddles-ceo-coo-quit-3-months-acquisition-2017-12"> had just quit as chief executive of Dropbox rival Huddle</a>, shortly after overseeing its sale to private equity firm Turn/River.</p><p>As of December, Brøgger is chief executive of Wire, the encrypted video and messaging app backed by Skype cofounder and fellow Dane Janus Friis.</p><p>Wire initially made its reputation as a secure alternative to WhatsApp, Telegram, and Signal. The idea was to build a Skype for the modern age - a concept made more convincing by Friis' involvement. But in July, Wire announced "teams beta," a secure enterprise chat service to rival Slack and <a href="http://uk.businessinsider.com/keybase-launches-teams-end-to-end-encrypted-chat-app-2017-9">newer services like Keybase</a>.</p><p>This was a clear move to try and make money. In an interview with Business Insider, Brøgger described Wire as "pre-revenue" - meaning it doesn't make any cash - and said it had more than one million downloads.</p><p>The company's finances to date are still a mystery. Friis is the firm's main backer through a collective called Iconical, a group of engineers, designers, and entrepreneurs. Iconical has never disclosed how much funding it's put into Wire.</p><p>Brøgger is tasked with getting Wire's enterprise business off the ground, and told Business Insider he is in the early stages of hiring more sales staff inside Europe and North America.</p><h2>Could Wire be up for the sale soon too?</h2><p>A quick glance at Brøgger's LinkedIn profile shows that the last two firms he headed up - Huddle and mobile services firm MACH - were acquired not long after he became CEO.</p><p>Is a sale on Wire's horizon too, even if it's not making money?</p><p>"You're right - with my track record, I'm a hired gun and not a founder," he said. "I love working with interesting companies, to see if you can bring them into a healthy position. If it's private equity or venture backed, it will end with a sale. These are not shareholders who are forever shareholders.</p><p>"Right now [a Wire sale] is fairly unlikely - down the road it's absolutely an opportunity," he added. "My track record is being part of company transactions, but that was not really discussed during interviews with [Wire's] board, executives and shareholders. But I'm sure it's part of my CV they had put into their evaluation somewhere. Right now it's all about growth."</p><p>Under former chief executive Alan Duric, Wire focused on becoming a secure communications service that might be useful to activists and journalists. But there's more money to be made from enterprises, and the idea is to take advantage of the cultural shift triggered by tools like Slack which, among other things, promise a better alternative to email.</p><p>Brøgger sees an opportunity in Slack's lack of end-to-end encryption - though he is modest in his ambition against his rivals. According to statistics from September last year, Slack <a href="https://slackhq.com/where-work-happens-around-the-world-f959c5e80278?gi=ae82b9aeb018">has more than six million daily users</a>.</p><p>"I'm not going to try and lure them into the battlefield, and take them head on - they would roll over me," Brøgger said of the competition. "We would like to be a credible and attractive alternative, we want to be shortlisted every time an enterprise is picking their future collaboration tool."</p><p>He points to Wire's strong credentials in voice, citing Friis' direct involvement. He also said the company is compliant with Europe's strict new rules around data privacy, the GDPR.</p><p>"If you have a call or a group conference call over Wire, everything is encrypted. I don't think Cisco or GoToMeeting can match that," he said.</p><p>As of yet, he isn't in a position to give financial targets for the first quarter. "I have agreed not to set objectives until the end of Q1 - we've only just pivoted. Right now it's about finding out where to put more marketing and sales people to accelerate. We're growing, and have lots of leads."</p><p>In a statement to Business Insider, Janus Friis said it made sense to target enterprise messaging.</p><p>"Wire's potential is very strong," he said. "The enterprise messaging market is large, and Wire offers higher levels of encryption, transparency and feature quality for enterprise customers.</p><p>"Wire isn't just about replacing another app, it's about creating something new - a modern solution that works for all devices, protects peoples' privacy, and doesn't rely on advertising or user data. Wire's transparency, its open business model, and its focus on security through end-to-end encryption are differentiators."</p><h2>The fate of promising enterprise startup Huddle has been a mystery - until now</h2><p>Last August, Business Insider reported that Huddle was being <a href="http://uk.businessinsider.com/uk-startup-huddle-is-selling-to-turnriver-for-an-estimated-89-million-2017-8">sold off to San Francisco private equity firm Turn/River</a>. One source pegged the deal at $89 million (£68 million). The deal <a href="http://uk.businessinsider.com/huddle-has-sold-most-of-its-shares-to-turn-river-2017-9">was confirmed later that month and Brøgger, still Huddle's chief executive, said Huddle would continue trading.</a></p><p>By December, Brøgger <a href="http://uk.businessinsider.com/huddles-ceo-coo-quit-3-months-acquisition-2017-12">had not only quit his job</a> to go to Wire, he had taken chief operating officer Rasmus Holst with him. Chief technology officer Stuart Cochran also quit for a new job at education company BridgeU.</p><p>"I left Huddle simply because the opportunity at Wire was something I couldn't refuse," Brøgger told Business Insider in an interview in January. He had worked with Holst prior to Huddle, at mobile services company MACH. "We liked working with each other - I brought him with me into Huddle. We got approached as a team, we looked at each other [and asked if] it was something we wanted, and we both said yes."</p><p>As for Huddle's position, Brøgger said: "It was time for Huddle to find some new shareholders to help in the next phase of its life," he said, adding that he "absolutely did not" leave because the firm was in financial trouble. "When I left, we were profitable and things were actually okay.</p><p>"After eight or nine years of being VC-backed, and having brought the company to break even, I think both in terms of the ownership structure and for myself, it made a tonne of sense to find new shareholders, new ideas, and new know-how to increase the growth."</p><p>He added: "I had a mandate to sell Huddle if we could find a relevant buyer, and we worked with an investment bank who had advised them. And if we didn't have a suitable buyer, we had existing shareholders who had committed to fund the business."</p><p>Brøgger wouldn't comment on Huddle's current financial position.
