Health Minister KK Shailaja said hitherto the amount was Rs 2 lakh for each beneficiary. "For those who want to undergo surgery to become males, a maximum of Rs 2 lakh was given. But due to the number of surgeries and mounting expenses involved, this amount has now been increased to Rs 5 lakh. Likewise, those who want to undergo corrective surgery to become females, the amount has been fixed at Rs 2.50 lakh," said Shailaja. Kerala hikes allowance to transgenders for sex-change surgeries

<ul><li>The <keyword id="6357505" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Kerala-high-court">Kerala High Court</keyword> today broke a barrier as it ruled that a <keyword id="3881175" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="transgender-person">transgender person</keyword> can join the <keyword id="6363208" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="national-cadet-corps">National Cadet Corps</keyword>.</li><li><keyword id="10363494" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Hina-Haneefa">Hina Haneefa</keyword>, a 22-year old transwoman, had moved the Kerala High Court for her right to be a part of the <keyword id="50583" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="NCC">NCC</keyword>.</li><li>The court said that the enrolment criteria under Section 6 of the National Cadet Corps Act, 1948 which excludes admission of transgender persons to Corps should be amended.</li></ul>Hina Haneefa, a transgender who identifies herself as a woman, must be happy today. The Kerala High Court today broke a barrier as it ruled that a transgender person can join the National Cadet Corps, going beyong the previous rule of being either a male or female person to join the youth wing of the Armed Forces. Legal news platform <a href="https://www.barandbench.com/news/litigation/kerala-high-court-allows-admission-of-transgender-person-to-national-cadet-corps">Bar &amp; Bench </a>reported that the state’s top court said that the enrolment criteria under Section 6 of the National Cadet Corps Act, 1948 which excludes admission of transgender persons to Corps should be amended. “Transgender person has a right to be recognised not only as a transgender but also a right to self-perceived self-identity,” said Justice Anu Sivaraman who pronounced the order. Haneefa, the 22-year old transwoman had moved the Kerala High Court for her right to be a part of the NCC. Haneefa had joined the NCC when she was 13, as a ‘boy’ the gender assigned to her at birth. However, since then, she has undergone transformational surgeries. “Gender should not be a factor for admission to the corps,” Haneefa had told <a href="https://www.thequint.com/neon/gender/transwoman-from-kerala-challenges-ministry-of-defence">the Quint</a> in an interview earlier. “Petitioner is entitled to enrollment in the NCC Senior Girls Division and rejection of request of petitioner for such enrolment is completely unsustainable,” said Justice Sivaraman during the order. Transgender person can join the National Cadet Corps, rules Kerala High Court

Two flood-prone village panchayats in <keyword id="28504" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="kerala" source="Orion">Kerala</keyword> are getting ready to go the tech way and implement digital locker facility for people for the safe upkeep of their valuable documents, in the wake of frequent downpours. The authorities of <keyword id="840729" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="kodiyathur" source="Orion">Kodiyathur</keyword> and Karassery would soon conduct free camps in most rain-hit areas in the panchayats to create awareness among people about the facility and make them part of it. Ahead of the camps, a meeting of people's representatives of these panchayats were held at a government school here on Wednesday. The digital locker is a facility envisaged by the union IT Ministry as part of the <keyword id="1929810" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="digital-india" source="Orion">Digital India</keyword> programme to help citizens store their personal as well as government documents in the digital format, an official statement said here. One of the major issues faced by local people during the time of recent floods in Kerala was the loss of valuable certificates and official documents, panchayat authorities said. The digital locker can be a solution to the issue to some extent, they added. Any document including driving licence, <keyword id="144117" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="aadhaar" source="Orion">Aadhaar</keyword>, <keyword id="61610" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="pan" source="Orion">PAN</keyword> card and certificates related to birth, vehicle registration and educational qualifications can be kept in digital formats in these lockers and there is no special charge for this, they explained. Such documents can be submitted in the digital format itself during the time of verification and it would be considered on par the original certificates under the IT Act. A digital locker camp would be held in Karassery on August 20 and Kodiyathur on August 27, the panchayat authorities added. Rishi Sunak says he would rather lose than win on a false promise

<ul><li>This is the first time a transsexual couple tied the knot, legally, in the Southern Indian State of <keyword id="28504" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Kerala">Kerala</keyword>. </li><li>The couple tied the knot on Thursday under the country’s Special Marriages Act passed in 2014. </li><li>Kerala was the first to draw up a transgender policy in 2015.</li></ul> Weddings are always a happy occasion but <keyword id="27843" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="ishan">Ishan</keyword> and <keyword id="6363428" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Surya">Surya</keyword>’s wedding was particularly special because it marked the first time a transsexual couple tied the knot, legally, in the Southern Indian State of Kerala. Surya, 31, decked in a bright red saree, tied the knot with Ishan, 34 on Thursday under the country’s Special Marriages Act. This first-of-its-kind wedding was celebrated with much fanfare and was attended by many dignitaries, including some influential politicians. P <keyword id="7835" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Rani">Rani</keyword>, a transgender activist, told the <a href="https://www.hindustantimes.com/kerala/kerala-s-maiden-trans-sexual-wedding-aims-to-show-the-path-ahead/story-CN5fixAbL6jwW07G9H55hM.html" data-type="tilCustomLink">Hindustan Times</a>, “Some years ago, we couldn’t have imagined such a function in the heart of Thiruvananthapuram.” She added, “Things are slowly changing and we have started getting some acceptance in the <keyword id="20980" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="society">society</keyword>. We hope this marriage will set the ball rolling.” In 2014, Surya, the bride, underwent sex change surgery and became a woman after which her family ousted her. Her husband, Ishan, being a Muslim, met with a similar, if not worse fate, when he underwent sex change surgery in 2015 to become a man. However, both families accepted their decision and were a part of the wedding celebrations that had over 1000 guests. The couple met each other while working at an NGO for the welfare of transsexuals. Ishan is a businessman and Surya is a well-known <keyword id="1925624" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Malayalam-TV">Malayalam TV</keyword> artiste and activist. Both the bride and groom are members of the government-appointed transgender justice board. “It is just the beginning. We will be a role model for others. We will show the world trans-sexual people can also lead a decent life like others. Society’s attitude is slowly changing,” the bride told the <keyword id="6518498" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="hindustan-times">Hindustan Times</keyword>. After the Indian Supreme Court decided to recognise "Third Gender" in 2014, the state of Kerala was the first to draw up a transgender policy, in 2015. This policy is aimed at upholding the transgender community's freedom from discrimination and right to equality.

People in Kerala termed this as a significant shift and also became a popular thread on Reddit. 
 
On Reddit, people hailed the decision of the magazine, claiming this move in a conservative society will genuinely the address the concerns of the third gender.
