<ul><li>Kepler went supernova — died in the biggest explosion known to humans — over 400 years ago but the resulting blast wave hasn’t slowed down since.</li><li>The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) has been tracking 15 knots — pieces of debris — and two of them are headed for Earth. </li><li>The fastest piece of debris is travelling at 37 million kilometres per hour, 20,000 faster than the speed of sound.</li></ul>The star known as Kepler exploded in a fiery supernova over four centuries ago, but the resulting blast wave — along with pieces of debris — is still travelling through outer space at the fastest speeds known to man. And, some of it, is headed towards Earth. The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (<a href="https://www.nasa.gov/mission_pages/chandra/images/keplers-supernova-remnant-debris-from-stellar-explosion-not-slowed-after-400-years.html">NASA</a>) has its eye on 15 pieces of debris from the <keyword id="9789579" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="kepler-supernova">Kepler supernova</keyword>. Eight of those pieces are definitely headed away from Earth, five have no definitive direction but two are coming towards the planet. <div type="javascript" title="Custom" contenttype="Video"><cdata><![CDATA[]]></cdata></div> The good news is that even though the remnants are within the Milky Way Galaxy, they’re still a massive 20,000 light-years away from Earth. So, despite their fast speeds, it will be a while before they pose a serious threat to the planet. The Kepler supernova’s blast wave shows no signs of slowing down The Kepler star explosion was first spotted by Johannes Kepler in 1604. The US space agency has been tracking the Kepler supernova remnant for a while now and, even though 400 years have passed, the debris from the explosion shows no signs of slowing down. <div type="image" title="kepler (2)" msid="77646375" hostid="261" caption="&amp;lt;p&amp;gt;Kepler supernova remanent caught on camera by three of the most advanced telescopes&amp;lt;/p&amp;gt;"></div> The pieces are travelling at an average speed of 16 million kilometres an hour — that’s over 10,000 times faster than the speed of sound. Such high speeds are normally seen in a supernova within days or weeks of the explosion before a remnant gets the chance to form, not after centuries have gone by. <div type="image" title="kepler_edited" msid="77646407" hostid="261" caption="&amp;lt;p&amp;gt;Kepler supernova remnant located in the Milky Way Galaxy, around 20,000 light years away from Earth&amp;lt;/p&amp;gt;"></div> Among the 15 pieces that NASA is tracking, the fastest one was recorded shooting across the universe at over double the speed — 37 million kilometres an hour. This is the highest speed ever recorded of supernova remnant debris in X-rays, according to the space agency. Why is the Kepler supernova remnant moving so fast? Despite multiple observations, scientists have been unable to decipher the exact reason for the high speeds. Some suggest that it is because the Kepler supernova remnant is an unusually bright Type Ia. This is when a small dense star, known as a white dwarf, exceeds a critical mass limit after interacting with a companion star. This creates a thermonuclear explosion that shatters the white dwarf and launches its remains outward. The other explanation is the immediate environment around the Kepler supernova remnant is ‘clumpy’. This could allow the debris to tunnel through areas where the density is low and avoid deceleration. Kepler supernova exploded 400 years ago but hasn’t slowed down — and two pieces of debris are headed towards Earth

As Apple became the first US company to touch the $2 trillion mark, the US International Trade Commission (USITC) announced to launch an investigation to find whether its mobile devices and Macs violate patents owned by Japanese consumer electronics company <keyword id="9790052" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="maxell">Maxell</keyword>. The USITC on Wednesday voted to institute an investigation of certain mobile electronic devices and laptop computers and identified "Apple Inc. of Cupertino, CA, as the respondent in this investigation". The investigation is based on a complaint filed by Maxell of Kyoto, Japan, on July 17. Maxell filed a complaint with the USITC, alleging that Apple's mobile devices, tablets, smartwatches, and laptop computers violate patents related to passcode unlocking, WiFi assist, mobile communications, facial recognition in the Photos app, and more. "The complaint alleges violations of section 337 of the Tariff Act of 1930 in the importation into the US and sale of certain mobile electronic devices and laptop computers that infringe patents asserted by the complainant," the USITC said in a statement. "The complainant requests that the USITC issue a limited exclusion order and a cease and desist order". The USITC will make a final determination in the investigation as early as possible. Within 45 days after the institution of the investigation, the USITC will set a target date for completing the investigation. Maxell manufactures consumer electronics like batteries, wireless charging products, storage devices, LCD and laser projectors and functional materials. Apple was yet to comment on the USITC statement. Apple is being investigated patent infringement by US trade body

ISRO’s Young Scientists Programme stands cancelled due to COVID-19

<ul><li>It’s not just Gmail but other services within the Google suite of products that are creating issues for users today. </li><li>Google Drive, Google Docs, Google Meet and other applications that people generally use for remote work are facing problems. </li><li>Google is continuing to investigate the issue and will provide an update shortly. </li></ul>Google Drive, Docs, Meet, Keep, Voice, Group, Chat along with Gmail were out of order for over six hours today starting at 10:00 am. The tech giant has confirmed that all of its services are up and running again but has not offered an explanation as to what went wrong. "The problem with Google Drive should be resolved. Google Drive, Docs, Meet and others are working again after being out of service for over six hours

The brigade was moved in two weeks ago from Tibet towards the Lipulekh tri-junction in China. The Indian authorities have came to know two weeks ago that Chinese troops were reinforced in Pala, around 10 km from the border. In July itself, around 1,000 troops were deployed near Pala and a permanent post was built there by China. "A fortnight back, 2,000 more additional troops were deployed at the post," sources said. India's road construction to Lipulekh lake at 17,000 feet had sparked a diplomatic row between the India and Nepal as Kathmandu claimed the area to be its territory. The road will shorten the travel time for pilgrims visiting the Kailash Mansarovar. Nepal also brought out a new political map showing the contested area as its own. India and China are locked in a more than three-month-long standoff at multiple points, hitherto unprecedented along the border. China had changed the status quo on <keyword id="9262087" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="the-line-of-actual-control">the Line of Actual Control</keyword> at various places, moving inside Indian territories. India has objected to it and is taking up the matter with China at all levels. The border tension between India and China has not been resolved despite several rounds of military and diplomatic talks. China increases troop deployment near Lipulekh Pass

However, the global tech giant did not offer any explanation as why the services were unable in the first place. Gmail is working again — Google fixes issue without explaining what went wrong

<ul><li><keyword id="9840459" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="asteroid-11-es4">Asteroid 11 ES4</keyword>, which is approaching the Earth will be closer to the planet than even the Moon on September 1. </li><li>This will be the asteroid’s closest proximity to the planet till date.</li><li>The next asteroid who will get this close to Earth will only show up 12 years down the line</li></ul>Many asteroids come and go but most keep their distance from Earth as they fly past. Now one daring asteroid is set to come closer to the planet — closer than even the Moon on September 1. Officially recognized as <a href="https://ssd.jpl.nasa.gov/horizons.cgi?find_body=1&amp;body_group=sb&amp;sstr=2011%20ES4">Asteroid 11 ES4</a>, the space rock will be a mere 121,000 kilometers (kms) from Earth as it shoots past the planet next week. The moon, on the other hand, is three times further away at 384,400 kms. In fact, Asteroid 11 ES 4 will be the only near-Earth object to venture in this close for another decade. Only in 2032 will another asteroid — <a href="https://ssd.jpl.nasa.gov/sbdb.cgi?sstr=2008%20DB">2008 DB</a> — come within the same distance of Earth. Not only is this a milestone for the planet, but it’s also the asteroid’s closest encounter to Earth till date. The Jet Propulsion Laboratory (<a href="https://ssd.jpl.nasa.gov/sbdb.cgi?sstr=2011%20ES4;old=0;orb=0;cov=0;log=0;cad=1#cad">JPL</a>) database shows that the asteroid has made eight close approaches since 1987 but none as intimate as next week. Before its fly by next week, Asteroid 11 ES 4’s closest approach to Earth was on 13 March 2011, which is when it was first spotted by astronomers and catalogued. UAE’s Hope probe spots Mars for the very first time on its maiden voyage through space

Nearly 66 per cent of Indian organisations have had at least one <keyword id="608402" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="data-breach">data breach</keyword> or <keyword id="6361948" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="cybersecurity">cybersecurity</keyword> incident since shifting to a remote working model during the pandemic, a survey by Barracuda Networks said on Thursday. The findings indicated employees in 67 per cent of organisations experienced an increase in email phishing attacks. While 64 per cent of organisations expect an incident to occur in the next month, 70 per cent are concerned about unknown threats that will cause business disruption in the next six months. Additionally, 53 per cent of organisations in India do not have an up-to-date cybersecurity strategy and solutions in place that cover all the vulnerabilities posed by full-time remote working, said the survey by Barracuda, a leading provider of Cloud-enabled security solutions. This is made more difficult by 79 per cent of organisations allowing employees to use personal email addresses and personal devices to conduct company work. "More employees working from home means that more devices are connecting remotely, outside of the secured corporate network," Murali Urs, Country Manager India, Barracuda Networks, said in a statement. "It's critical to understand what remote workers are doing with data that is rapidly going out of control, which indicates that organisations will have to rework the 'new normal' to make it more effective and more secure." The study is based on responses from over 1,000 business decision makers in India, Australia, New Zealand, Singapore, and Hong Kong including 247 business leaders in India. The study suggests that Covid-19 has accelerated the introduction of remote working by at least five years for 59 per cent of organisations in India, yet, organisations must address relevant security challenges. Amid the crisis, 89 per cent business leaders feel the necessity to accelerate their digital transformation in the next six months to ease the burdens placed on the traditional business model by remote working. A key component of this transformation is Cloud computing. The study indicates that 83 per cent have fast-tracked their plans to move their data to a 100 per cent Cloud-based model to create a new future for their business. On average, 89 per cent agree that this shift will help reduce overall IT costs to support business growth. More than half the companies in India have faced at least one data breach since going remote

Twitter received nearly 21 per cent more information requests for account information from the governments and law enforcement agencies worldwide in the July-December 2019 period compared to the previous reporting period. The micro-blogging platform that reimagined its biannual transparency report site into a comprehensive Twitter Transparency Centre said that the aggregate number of accounts specified in these requests increased by nearly 63 per cent. "The total volume of requests and specified accounts are respectively the largest we've seen to date since our transparency reporting began in 2012. We received government information requests from 91 different countries since 2012," it said in a statement late on Wednesday. Information requests from the US continue to make up the highest percentage of legal requests for account information. During this reporting period, 26 per cent of all global requests for account information originated within the US. The second highest volume of requests originate from Japan, comprising 22 per cent of global information requests. "We often receive non-government information requests to disclose account information of anonymous or pseudonymous Twitter accounts (requests to "unmask" the identity of the individual), which we frequently object to. Twitter objected to 23 US civil requests for account information that sought to unmask the identities of anonymous speakers on first amendment grounds during this reporting period. "We ended up litigating six of these requests. Twitter prevailed in four cases, lost one, and one is still pending. No information was produced in response to the other 17 requests". In this reporting period, Twitter received 27,538 legal demands to remove content specifying 98,595 accounts. This is the largest number of requests and specified accounts it received since releasing its first Transparency Report in 2012. "This record number of legal demands originated from 51 different countries. 86 per cent of the total global volume of legal demands originated from only three countries: Japan, Russia, and Turkey," Twitter said. The new Twitter Transparency Centre offers all disclosed data in one place and data visualizations, making it easier to compare trends over time. The Twitter archive of state-backed information operations is being used by researchers, journalists and experts around the world which now spans more than 9 terabytes of media, includes over 83,000 accounts, and over 200 million Tweets and is an industry-first resource. Twitter said it removed 86,799 unique accounts for promoting terrorism and violent extremism in the reporting period. Nearly 74 per cent of the unique accounts were proactively suspended using its internal, proprietary tools. There were 257,768 unique accounts suspended during this reporting period for violating Twitter policies prohibiting child sexual exploitation. "Hateful conduct expanded to include a new dehumanization policy on July 9, 2019. There was a 54 per cent increase in the number of accounts actioned for violations of our hateful conduct policy during this reporting period," Twitter informed. Twitter data shows a 21% increase in account information requests from governments

This allowed it to monitor roughly <a href="http://www.space.com/17383-kepler-planet-hunting-nasa-telescope-infographic.html">150,000 stars</a> for years at a time.The telescope searches for the faint dimming that occurs when a planet crosses the path of one of those stars. The goal of this is to identify possible exoplanets that are Earth-sized or larger and are located in zones that are favorable to life.Since its launch, Kepler has helped astronomers confirm the existence of more than 1,000 exoplanets, or planets outside of our solar system. Astronomers now believe that, on average, there may be at least <a href="http://www.popsci.com/science/article/2012-01/new-exoplanet-analysis-determines-planets-are-more-common-stars-milky-way">one planet orbiting every star in the sky</a>.In 2014, <a href="https://www.nasa.gov/mission_pages/kepler/main/index.html">NASA started K2</a>, a follow-up to the 2009 Kepler mission, continued the search for exoplanets while also studying supernovae, comets, asteroids, and other cosmic phenomena using Kepler. NASA just doubled the number of known planets outside our solar system

However, the data could tell astronomers how common Earth-like planets are, and what the chances of finding <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/stephen-hawking-warning-space-aliens-seti-2016-12">intelligent extraterrestrial life</a> might be."We have taken our telescope and we have counted up how many planets are similar to the Earth in this part of the sky," Susan Thompson, a Kepler research scientist at the SETI Institute, said during a press conference at NASA Ames Research Center on Monday."We said, 'how many planets there are similar to Earth?' With the data I have, I can now make that count," she said. "We're going to determine how common other planets are. Are there other places we could live in the galaxy that we don't yet call home?"Added to Kepler's previous discoveries, the 10 new Earth-like planet candidates make 49 total, Thompson said. If any of them have stable atmospheres, there's even a chance they could harbor alien life.<h2>The new Earths next door?</h2><a href="https://www.nasa.gov/press-release/nasa-releases-kepler-survey-catalog-with-hundreds-of-new-planet-candidates">NASA/JPL-Caltech</a>Scientists wouldn't say too much about the 10 new planets, only that they appear to be roughly Earth-sized and orbit in their stars' "<a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/goldilocks-exoplanet-habitability-internal-heat-2016-8">habitable zone</a>" - where water is likely to be stable and liquid, not frozen or boiled away. That doesn't guarantee these planets are actually habitable, though. Beyond harboring a stable atmosphere, things like <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/goldilocks-exoplanet-habitability-internal-heat-2016-8">plate tectonics</a> and not being <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/proxima-b-habitable-atmosphere-jwst-2016-9">tidally locked</a> may also be essential.However, Kepler researchers suspect that almost countless Earth-like planets are waiting to be found. This is because the telescope can only "see" exoplanets that transit, or pass, in front of their stars.The transit method of detecting planets that Kepler scientists use involves looking for dips in a star's brightness, which are caused by a planet blocking out a fraction of the starlight (similar to how the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/why-total-solar-eclipses-will-end-2017-6">moon eclipses the sun</a>). Because most planets orbit in the same disk or plane, and that plane is rarely aligned with Earth, that means Kepler can only see a fraction of distant solar systems. (Exoplanets that are angled slightly up or down are invisible to the transit method.)Despite those challenges, Kepler has revealed the existence of 4,034 planet candidates, with <a href="https://www.nasa.gov/press-release/nasa-releases-kepler-survey-catalog-with-hundreds-of-new-planet-candidates">2,335 of those</a> confirmed as exoplanets. And these are just the worlds in 0.25% of the night sky."In fact, you'd need 400 Keplers to cover the whole sky," Mario Perez, a Kepler program scientist at NASA, said during the briefing.The biggest number of planets appear to be a completely new class of planets, called "mini-Neptunes," Benjamin Fulton, an astronomer at the University of Hawaii at Manoa and California Institute of Technology, said during the briefing.Such worlds are between the size of Earth and the gas giants of our solar system, and are likely the most numerous kind in the universe. It has taken scientists years to analyze that information because it's often difficult parse, interpret, and verify.Thompson said this new Kepler data analysis will be the last for this leg of the telescope's first observations. The recently announced <keyword id="9460361" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="space-sector-reforms">space sector reforms</keyword> are not aimed at privatisation of Indian Space Research Organisation (<keyword id="6358064" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="isro">ISRO</keyword>), its Chairman and Secretary in the Department of Space, K Sivan asserted on Thursday. The space agency also stated that the draft on the proposed space activity bill is almost final and it will soon be placed before the Union Cabinet for approval. "When space sector reforms were announced by the government there were many misconceptions like it would lead to privatisation of ISRO. It is not. Again and again I'm repeating it is not the privatisation of ISRO," Sivan said. Addressing a webinar on "Unlocking of India's Potential <keyword id="7412163" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="in-space">in Space</keyword> Sector," he said the whole aim of reforms is enabling the private players to carry out the space activities which is otherwise being done by ISRO. "In fact, the activities of ISRO are going to increase and ISRO will be able to better utilise its resources in taking up developmental as well as capacity building activities of the government, rather than the routine production activity," he added. The Union Cabinet on June 24 approved participation of the private sector in the entire range of space activities, including planetary exploration missions. It had said, the newly-created Indian National Space Promotion and Authorisation Centre (IN-SPACe) will provide a level playing field for private companies to use Indian space infrastructure, by hand-holding industries in space activities through encouraging policies and a friendly regulatory environment. Also, the New Space India Limited (NSIL), a PSU under the Department of Space, will endeavour to re-orient space activities from a "supply driven" model to a "demand driven" model, thereby ensuring optimum utilisation of our space assets, it had said. Noting that the space sector reform introduced by the government is going to be a "real game changer", Sivan said private sector participation in the space sector has been increasing worldwide and it is a healthy trend, as it increases diversity. In India too space sector startups are taking developmental activities in both launch vehicles as well as in satellites, he said. However, there was no mechanism available in the country to extend technology and infrastructure support to them. Also there was no regulatory mechanism to control the private sector activities, so an institutional mechanism has been created as part of reform. The webinar was attended by Principal Scientific Advisor to government of India K Vijay Raghavan, Mahindra Group Chairman Anand Mahindra, Bharti Enterprises Chairman Sunil B Mittal among others. Further observing that with the opening of the space sector, ISRO can focus on technology development and capacity building Sivan said in addition to that it will also facilitate private sector participation in major national missions through announcement of opportunity. However, the private sector will have to do their own research and development activities, business viability studies, funding as well as finding customers for their services, he said. Pointing out that import of communication satellites is now in the embargo list under 'Aatma Nirbhar Bharat Abhiyan', the ISRO Chief said there will be a need for large number of communication satellites to be launched in the immediate future and this could be a huge opportunity for ISRO and also for the private sector. Launching a small satellite is another area where there is a huge projected demand and some startups are interacting with ISRO at an advanced stage and may launch very soon. According to ISRO officials, more than 500 industries are currently involved in activities such as production of components and more than 80 per cent of the launch vehicle and 60 per cent of the spacecraft budget is spent on industry. Scientific Secretary to ISRO, R Uma Maheshwaran said participation of the private sector in end-end space activities is definitely a strategy to expand the space economy. Noting that the private sector is much eager now, he said a lot of people are coming forward to make launch vehicles, and satellites and providing space based services. Uma Maheshwaran also said a mechanism is required regarding the indulgence of the private sector and for this, enactment of the space activity bill is a primary requisite. "It (bill) is almost in its final shape now, we have presented it to the Ministry (PMO) for inter-ministerial consultation and we feel that very soon it will be approved by the Cabinet and presented to the Parliament for making it an act. This is mandatory as India is signatory to the outer space treaty," he added. Vijay Raghavan, noting a lack of risk capital for industry to sufficiently invest in R&amp;D, said risk needs to be mitigated and for this the combination of talent and material resources, partnering with industry is needed. The opening of the space sector in India will have its impact globally, and also all sectors in India, he said adding that ".. this is an opportunity to increase volume and quality in extraordinary ways." Suggesting that space may well become the new "gold rush", Anand Mahindra said though India has an established and credible space programme, its share of the market is miniscule and he was sure that beginning now it will change with the entry of the private sector. "... it is our opportunity to level the playing field, by leveraging our competitive advantages and we have to seize it now," he said, while admitting that industry and private sector are often "uneasy bedfellows", but we have to make these reforms work as it is the best way forward". Sunil Mittal stressed on the need for the policy on participation of private sector in space programme to be "light-touch" but said it should be very strong on security, foreign policy aspects and some of the guidelines need to be very clear so that industry participants know how to operate within the policy framework.
