"It was important to introduce some new characters."</p><p>"Top Gun: Maverick" picks up on Cruise's Navy pilot character 30 years later, and features new hotshot pilots that Maverick has to train for a big mission. The new cast includes stars like Teller, Glen Powell ("Set It Up"), Jay Ellis ("Insecure"), and Monica Barbaro ("The Good Cop").</p><p>The sequel also introduces a character that is only briefly mentioned in the first movie.</p><div type="image" title="top gun maverick" height="1178" width="2102" msid="91472846" hostid="261"></div>To play the romantic lead opposite Cruise, 59, in "Maverick," Jennifer Connelly, 51, stars as Penny Benjamin.<p>In the first movie, Penny is only referred to as "the Admiral's daughter" whom Maverick had a fling with. In the sequel, she's now a single mother who owns a bar near the flight school where Maverick returns to teach.</p><p>"Penny Benjamin, a character we have heard mentioned but never seen before, that was an amazing opportunity to bring Jennifer Connelly's character into this film," Kosinski said.</p><div type="image" title="Meg Ryan in a black dress" height="2000" width="3000" msid="91472848" hostid="261"></div>1986's "Top Gun" marked the first major movie role for Ryan, 60. She has gone on to become a major star thanks to beloved rom-com hits like "When Harry Met Sally..." and "You've Got Mail."<p>McGillis, 64, was a major star through the 1980s. 'Top Gun: Maverick' director says the major female stars from the first movie were never considered for the sequel

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Aomawa Shields is one of 26 Black women astrophysicists in America.</li><li>She's long grappled with her two loves, acting and astronomy, spending 11 years acting before getting her Ph. D. in astrophysics.</li></ul><p><em>This is an as-told-to essay based on a conversation with Dr. Aomawa Shields, an astronomer, astrobiologist, and associate professor of physics and astronomy at UC Irvine. She is just one of 26 Black women astrophysicists in America. The essay has been edited for length and clarity.</em></p><p>My fascination with the sky came at a young age. I remember being younger than 10 years old and going to air shows for the Blue Angels, an aerial flight team at the Miramar Air Force Base in San Diego. My grandmother worked there as a civil servant, and we would go to these shows and see these blue-and-yellow planes.</p><p>I would look up at the sky and see these incredible designs they'd make with these planes. I was wowed by what I saw. That led me to start to look up at night. I'd see these tiny pinpoints of light — so many of them — and I began to think about what might be looking back at me. What was out there? How far out did it go?</p><p>I also found inspiration in movies I watched as a child. My family loved sci-fi movies and TV shows, and we'd sit around the TV and watch "Star Trek: The Next Generation." Eventually, I watched "Top Gun," which was filmed at Miramar, and Kelly McGillis' character Charlotte Blackwood was an astrophysicist. She seemed so stunning. I thought, "If astrophysicists can be like that, that's what I want to be."</p><div type="image" title="Aomawa Shields as a child at her mother's masters degree ceremony" height="1617" width="1259" msid="102655344" hostid="261" sizebytes="52858"></div><p>It wasn't until I watched the movie "Space Camp" when I was 12 that I started to make plans. It was about these kids that get accidentally launched into space. And I again thought, "That's what I want to do." Ever the student, I went to my set of World Book encyclopedias my mother had purchased, pulled out the volume labeled "A," and looked up "astronomy" and "astronaut" and planned out my entire career trajectory.</p><h2>I was torn between my dual passions of acting and astronomy</h2><p>I also acted during my early years, even understudying for a professional production at San Diego's La Jolla Playhouse. But I don't think it had permeated into my consciousness that I could do that for a career. It didn't have that stellar moment yet.</p><p>That came when I got into this prep school — which I largely went to for the observatory they had — and I ended up stumbling into an audition and getting cast in a play. I then did play after play, and it became, "Wow, I love both of these things." It didn't seem to be a problem back in high school.</p><p>Then it became time for me to choose where I'd go for college. I'd had MIT in the back of my mind for six or seven years. Even though I knew I loved acting, I was very stubborn: This was my path, so I was going to stick with it.</p><p>MIT was all-consuming. I spent all my time just on my coursework. I did join an acapella group called The Muses, and thought that was going to be enough. But acting was still there in my mind, and caught up to me in my second or third year, like, "Hey, it's me! You forgot about me." So I took acting classes while at MIT as well.</p><div type="image" title="Aomawa Shields as an undergrad giving a talk at MIT" height="1289" width="1719" msid="102655345" hostid="261" sizebytes="39656"></div><p>Again, when I got to the end of my time at MIT, I got the message: Choose between astronomy and acting. I applied to the top three acting graduate schools and a Ph. D. program in astrophysics. I didn't get into the acting schools but got into the Ph. D. program, and took that as a sign. I was desperate to put my future in anyone else's hands, looking for these signs. I never really thought, "What do I really want to do?"</p><h2>I struggled as the only Black woman in my Ph. D. program</h2><p>I was totally primed to take all of that inner conflict into the Ph. D. program. But it didn't go away simply because I had made a choice. All it took was a little seed of doubt: I'd struggle a little bit in class, and I'd find myself thinking about acting, or what movies were playing.</p><div type="image" title="Aomawa Shields during her first PhD program at U. I loved it — no one could tell me I wasn't good at acting. They could tell me I wasn't good at astrophysics, but they knew nothing about my acting world. I had some control over that.</p><p>There were also external factors I'd internalized: I was the only Black woman in my Ph. D. program. My mind made a story about that. I felt so much pressure to do well, to represent my community. When I had a white male professor who told me I should consider other career options, I took that as confirmation — a sign — that I didn't belong. I started auditioning, and eventually moved out to Los Angeles and got an MFA in acting.</p><p>I think that seeming illusion of control came from the fact that I saw acting as so different from astronomy. It was as if my running to acting, though steeped in a genuine love and interest for that discipline, was running away from a feeling of fear, of not belonging, and of no control that I felt in the sciences.</p><h2>How I've reconciled my two passions</h2><p>For a long time, I judged the choice I'd made. It felt like I had run away when things got hard, and I didn't like that. But even as I acted in plays and even hosted a science TV show, my astronomy dreams kept reappearing. I got a day job working for a space telescope called Spitzer, and started to go to astronomy talks again. I also didn't like hearing about astrophysics discoveries on the news — I wanted to be the one in the labs, making those discoveries.</p><div type="image" title="Aomawa Shields on the set of the PBS/Wired show Wired Science" height="761" width="1015" msid="102655350" hostid="261" sizebytes="23828"></div><p>All the roads were pointing back to a Ph. D. I surrendered to it, and, at 34 years old, applied to a program at the University of Washington.</p><p>That time around, I did things differently: I sought out community, like mentorships for Black and brown students and a mental health group for women of color. I ended up finding wonderful mentors who helped me realize my theater background wasn't something I had to sweep under the rug, but was instead my superpower. </p><p>In acting school, I felt like my identity and uniqueness was valued; they wanted me to share and talk about my feelings and specific background. In science, it's more objective, with no questions about who I am. But I found that I was able to reconcile both parts in grad school, finding a commonality in the storytelling aspects of both acting and astronomy.</p><p>It also released me from the fear of the stereotypes that had informed me as a woman of color in science. This is why our presence is absolutely critical, and why I started <a href="http://www.risingstargirls.org/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Rising Stargirls</a> to encourage other young women of color interested in the universe.</p><p>We need a diversity of backgrounds and views. Look at what people were able to achieve with only a fraction of representation of our country at the table. What can we achieve with the full representation of our country at the table? Literally, the sky is not the limit.</p>

<ul class="summary-list"><li>"Top Gun: Maverick" debuts in theaters on May 27.</li><li>The highly-anticipated sequel sees <keyword id="11922280" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="tom-cruise" source="Orion">Tom Cruise</keyword> return as fighter pilot Maverick. </li></ul><p>Shortly after the American premiere of "Top Gun: Maverick," Tom Cruise's sequel to his 1986 hit, an interview Cruise gave to Playboy magazine in the 1990s resurfaced online. In the interview, the actor said that it would be "irresponsible" to make a <a href="https://www.insider.com/top-gun-maverick-cannes-film-festival-red-carpet-premiere-photos-2022-5">second "Top Gun" film</a>, and he had decided against expanding the film's universe to avoid glorifying war and right-wing ideology. Cruise was right to have reservations — the film has been a pillar of hyper-masculine, <a href="https://www.thesun.co.uk/news/3977612/donald-trump-jr-shares-shocking-mock-up-video-of-us-president-blowing-up-a-cnn-plane-in-top-gun-style-footage/">Americana filmmaking for decades</a>. So why has he returned now, 30 years later? </p><p>Well, after a few <a href="https://www.insider.com/tom-cruise-kate-middleton-red-carpet-photos-2022-5">frames of "Maverick,"</a> it becomes clear, rather quickly, that Cruise and his co-producers are not in the least concerned with war (though one might argue that Hollywood has never really been interested in war at all). "Maverick" is instead concerned with the career of Tom Cruise, the power of stardom, and the future of Hollywood filmmaking. </p><h2>What's hot: Tom Cruise </h2><div type="image" title="top gun maverick" height="1188" width="1894" msid="91695075" hostid="261"></div><p>The film — which was co-written by Cruise's frequent collaborator Christopher McQuarrie — establishes its plot early. The US is on another civilizing mission: A foreign enemy has established a weapon of mass destruction (for reasons completely unknown to the viewer), and the US air force must destroy the weapon to save the world. The film whizzes past these logistical details quickly, seemingly to hide plot holes and, more importantly, prevent the viewer from thinking critically about the history of US military intervention. </p><p>A group of young and highly qualified fighter pilots have been recruited by the air force and summoned to Top Gun — the US government's renowned combat flying school — to execute a plan to complete the mission, which includes a series of near-impossible and deadly maneuvers. Despite still only being a captain when he should, by now, be an admiral, Tom Cruise's Pete "Maverick" Mitchell, who is living on the fringes of military life testing out high-altitude, hypersonic planes, is called back to instruct the group of highly qualified recruits at the behest of his former Top Gun classmate and rival, Iceman (Val Kilmer), who is an admiral and believes only Maverick, with his badass attitude and classic combat flying skills, can execute the mission.</p><p>But Maverick is loathed by the modern establishment, who believe he's an old hack. "The future is coming, and you're not in it," he's told early on in the film. At every turn, the film attempts to highlight the contrast between contemporary life and Cruise's old school habits to promote tradition over innovation. For instance, when Maverick is told that his testing program will soon be shut down and replaced with drones, he hops in a plane to prove he can still outfly any robot.</p><p>The film's metaphorical ambitions become even clearer when Maverick arrives at Top Gun to find that none of the young recruits have the correct balance of skill and chutzpah to lead the mission. Among the young pilots is Bradley "Rooster" Bradshaw (a middling Miles Teller), the son of Maverick's former flying partner, Goose, who died in combat. As a result, Maverick is drafted in as the squadron leader, and the entire burden of the mission falls squarely on his shoulders. The safety of the world, and, by extension, any suspense the film has attempted to build, relies on the skill, knowledge, and, most importantly, survival of Cruise.</p><h2>Bottom line: Tom Cruise is the sole source of charm and charisma in 'Top Gun'</h2><div type="image" title="Tom Cruise in a figher jet" height="918" width="1800" msid="91695077" hostid="261"></div><p>The importance of Cruise's central performance isn't a real surprise. One can make a fairly accurate assumption about the direction a film is likely to take by looking up its top-billed cast and its director. With no names on the bill close to Cruise's historic box office pull, this sequel was always crafted to service Cruise, and luckily for "Maverick," he emphatically proves his worth throughout the brisk two-hour runtime. He is the film's sole source of charm and charisma, proving that he still has the pace to keep up with actors younger than him, and the skill to drive a blockbuster forward.</p><p>But Cruise's star power was never really in question. Despite <a href="https://www.insider.com/leah-remini-says-tom-cruises-psychotic-coronavirus-rant-publicity-stunt-2020-12">public outbursts</a> and<a href="https://www.insider.com/tom-cruise-nicole-kidman-kids-indoctrinated-scientology-2019-7"> controversial associations</a>, Cruise's star has never dimmed: He has featured in at least one film every year since 2008, and he's a certified household name. So, the messaging in "Maverick" can often have a ring of desperation and insecurity.</p><p>This brand of nostalgia-driven filmmaking, however, has become increasingly popular in recent years. In the last decade, Quentin Tarantino, Paul Thomas Anderson, and Richard Linklater — three of the most prominent Hollywood filmmakers of their generation — have all produced uncritical tributes to their youth that hold subtle condemnations of the current trajectory of contemporary American life. This trend suggests that there might be some <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/joe-biden-white-supremacy-poison-great-replacement-theory-buffalo-2022-5?r=US&amp;IR=T">existential dread</a> among the seemingly liberal white American Hollywood man, similar to the white conservative man, about their position in society.  </p><p>Curiously, the desire for nostalgia in "Maverick" <a href="https://www.insider.com/top-gun-maverick-meg-ryan-kelly-mcgillis-not-in-movie-2022-5">doesn't extend to the women of the franchise</a>. Neither Meg Ryan, who played Rooster's mother, nor Kelly McGillis, who played Maverick's love interest in the original film, make returns. Maverick, instead, gets a new love interest in the form of Penny, played by the brilliant <keyword id="13988956" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="jennifer-connelly" source="Orion">Jennifer Connelly</keyword>, who is sadly relegated to a supporting act. These two omissions are jarring and immediately raise concerns about the construction of Cruise's ideal filmmaking world. Are we to believe men can get older and still be movie stars but women can't?</p><p>That is just one difficult question Cruise and the producers of "Maverick" will have to face when the film releases in US theaters on May 27. </p><h2>Grade: B</h2>

Tom Cruise is 'Top Gun: Maverick's’ only source of charm and charisma &mdash; but the ride is still thrilling

<ul class="summary-list"><li>For years a sequel to "Top Gun" has been in the works.</li><li>Director <keyword id="13818114" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="joseph-kosinski" source="Orion">Joseph Kosinski</keyword> told Insider the pitch he gave to Cruise to convince him to make the movie.</li></ul><p>In 1990, <keyword id="11922280" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="tom-cruise" source="Orion">Tom Cruise</keyword> made one thing very clear: he would never do a sequel to "Top Gun."</p><p>The 1986 Tony Scott-directed movie that featured a then-24-year-old Cruise made the actor into a superstar.</p><p>But it was time to move on.</p><p>"Some people felt that 'Top Gun' was a right-wing film to promote the Navy. And a lot of kids loved it," Cruise said four years after the release of the movie <a href="https://gizmodo.com/tom-cruise-top-gun-sequel-playboy-opinion-1986-propagan-1848858326">in a Playboy interview</a>. "But I want the kids to know that that's not the way war is — that 'Top Gun' was just an amusement park ride, a fun film with a PG-13 rating that was not supposed to be reality."</p><p>"That's why I didn't go on and make 'Top Gun II' and 'III' and 'IV' and 'V,'" he continued. "That would have been irresponsible."</p><p>But there's an old saying in Hollywood: Never say never.</p><p>As the decades passed, Cruise veered farther from prestige <keyword id="11898343" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="movies" source="Orion">movies</keyword> that garner Oscar attention — at the time of that Playboy interview, he was promoting the Oliver Stone movie "Born on the Fourth of July," garnering him the first of his three Oscar nominations — and more toward blockbusters, or as he put it, the big-screen version of the amusement-park ride.</p><p>This opened the door for a "Top Gun" sequel.</p><div type="image" title="Tom Cruise looking behind to Miles Teller" height="4160" width="6240" msid="91776824" hostid="261"></div><h2>Finding the 'emotional spine' of the sequel to get Cruise onboard</h2><p>Though now 59, Cruise has made himself into the biggest action star. In an industry dominated by franchises in which comic-book characters outshine the stars that play them, Cruise is very much one of the last global stars that audiences will come to see just because of his name.</p><p>Since the early 2010s, Paramount and the film's producer Jerry Bruckheimer have been trying to figure out a way to make a sequel. Even its original director, Tony Scott, was into the idea. But after <a href="https://www.latimes.com/archives/la-xpm-2012-aug-19-la-me-tony-scott-20120820-story.html">Scott's death in 2012</a>, a sequel looked uncertain again.</p><p>Years passed and Bruckheimer continued to work on the project. Then, around 2017, director Joseph Kosinski got involved.</p><p>Having already worked with Cruise on the 2013 sci-fi movie "Oblivion," he had a rapport with the superstar actor. He also felt he had a way to convince Cruise to become committed to the project.</p><p>"They had a script they were working on, they hadn't quite cracked the story yet, Jerry sent it to me to see what I thought," Kosinski recalled when he spoke with Insider over Zoom earlier this month.</p><div type="image" title="Top Gun" height="826" width="1240" msid="91776826" hostid="261"></div>"I had some very specific ideas which I shared with Jerry. He said, 'I like what you're thinking, let's go pitch it to Tom directly,'" the director added.<p>So Kosinski and Bruckheimer flew to Paris, where Cruise was putting the final touches on 2018's "Mission: Impossible — Fallout." There, Kosinski would give the same pitch to Cruise that he just gave to Bruckheimer.</p><p>"In between setups, I got about a half-hour of Tom's time to pitch him my take on the film," Kosinski said.</p><p>"What I led with was, 'I think we should build this movie around Maverick's relationship with Goose's son.' I really felt that is the emotional spine of this film," Kosinski said.</p><p>In "Top Gun," hotshot Navy pilot Pete "Maverick" Mitchell (Cruise) is one of the best of the best. He prepares to show his greatness when he's invited to take part in Top Gun, a fighter pilot school, alongside his best friend and radar intercept officer, Nick "Goose" Bradshaw (Anthony Edwards).</p><p>But when Goose dies during the training, Maverick has to carry on without his friend. The loss of Goose is something that haunts Maverick for the rest of the movie.</p><p>"It's a reason for Maverick to come back to Top Gun and for Tom Cruise to come back and play this character," Kosinski said of introducing Goose's son. "And I think for Tom, that was the first time he heard something that really grabbed him emotionally and said to him this is a reason to make this film." </p><div type="image" title="Tom Cruise in a figher jet" height="918" width="1800" msid="91776829" hostid="261"></div><h2>Thanks to a great story, and cameras in the cockpit, the sequel is better than the original</h2><p>With Cruise now on board and Kosinski at the helm, "Top Gun: Maverick" was a go.</p><p>Miles Teller was cast as Goose's son, Bradley "Rooster" Bradshaw, and Val Kilmer returned to reprise his role from the first movie, Tom "Iceman" Kazinsky, who is now a four-star Admiral. (<a href="https://www.insider.com/top-gun-maverick-meg-ryan-kelly-mcgillis-not-in-movie-2022-5">Kosinski told Insider</a> there were never any talks to bring the major female stars from the first movie, Kelly McGillis and Meg Ryan, back for the sequel).</p><p>And then there was the action. Though "Top Gun" was thrilling for the 1980s, Kosinski couldn't get away with shots of planes flying around and actors looking at targets to shoot at. And he could thank his star for that. Due to the "Mission: Impossible" movies, Cruise had pushed the envelope of what audiences expected of him.</p><p>However, Kosinski had thought that out too.</p><p>"The technology has advanced to the point where we can shoot this for real," he said.</p><p>Kosinski wanted Cruise, and the other actors, to really be in the jets during the action scenes.</p><div type="image" title="Joseph Kosinski and Tom Cruise next to each other talking" height="3545" width="5315" msid="91776831" hostid="261"></div>"I had been testing this new Sony camera with my DP Claudio Miranda called the Rialto, which is an IMAX-quality camera that can get down to a very small form factor so you can get that IMAX image with a small camera," he said. "We put six of those in the cockpit. So we were able to do things they just weren't able to do before."<p>The result is a rare feat: a sequel that's better than the original.  </p><p>In "Top Gun: Maverick," Cruise's character is still doing things his own way, but the Navy can't ignore his greatness, which leads him back to Top Gun to train the newest crop of pilots for a daring mission.</p><p>And one of those pilots is "Rooster" Bradshaw, which forces Maverick to have to deal with his past demons.</p><div type="image" title="Tom Cruise looking at a photo of he and Val Kilmer" height="4000" width="6000" msid="91776834" hostid="261"></div>Legacy sequels often aren't very good, let alone better than the original. However, Kosinski's keeping any excitement close to the vest.<p>Instead, the director said he simply went about making the project as its own standalone movie and a partial love letter to Scott. (Most of the movie has the look and feel of the original, right down to the opening text and the use of Kenny Loggins' hit song "Danger Zone.")</p><p>"Just as Maverick is going back to Top Gun, I wanted the audience to feel like we're going back to 'Top Gun' as well," he said. "It had to feel like a 'Top Gun' movie, but we also had to find ways to innovate and make it our own at the same time."</p><p><em>"Top Gun: Maverick" opens in theaters on Friday. </em></p>

And it sounds like you won't even have to wait all that long.<p>While on the Australian morning show "Sunrise" to promote his latest movie, "The Mummy" (out June 9), Cruise was asked about the rumors of a sequel.</p><p>"It's true," Cruise said. "I'm going to start filming it probably in the next year. It's definitely happening."</p><p>For the last few years, more talk about a "Top Gun" sequel has bounced around the internet as reports surfaced that it was in development. </p><p>In 2015, Skydance CEO David Ellison <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/top-gun-sequel-in-development-2015-6" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">said</a> a script was being written and that the story would take place in the contemporary times and feature drone fighters.</p><p>"<span>It's really exploring the end of an era of dogfighting and fighter pilots and what that culture is today," Ellison said at the time.</span></p><p><span>Later that year, fellow "Top Gun" star Val Kilmer <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/val-kilmer-confirms-top-gun-2-news-in-facebook-post-2015-11">confirmed</a> that he would be in the sequel.</span></p><p><span>The original "Top Gun," which starred Cruise as a hotshot pilot who's training at the elite Navy Fighter Weapons School, was one of the biggest hits of the late 1980s, earning over <a href="http://www.boxofficemojo.com/movies/?id=topgun.htm" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">$350 million worldwide</a> on a $15 million budget. Now, fans of the military action thriller will soon be able to see Cruise as Maverick one more time.</p><p><a href="http://www.dailymail.co.uk/tvshowbiz/article-3141557/Top-Gun-2-finally-development-Tom-Cruise-return-troubled-pilot-Maverick.html?ito=social-facebook">According to The Daily Mail</a>, Skydance CEO David Ellison confirmed a sequel script as well as the return of Cruise at a press junket in Berlin. </p><p><span>"Justin Marks is writing the screenplay right now," <a href="http://www.dailymail.co.uk/tvshowbiz/article-3141557/Top-Gun-2-finally-development-Tom-Cruise-return-troubled-pilot-Maverick.html?ito=social-facebook">Ellison confirmed</a>. "He has a phenomenal take to really update that world for what fighter pilots in the Navy has turned into today."</span><span><br /></span></p><p><span>Details are scarce on the plot and whether or not Kelly McGillis will return alongside Cruise. Last year, it was announced <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/top-gun-sequel-tom-cruise-drones-2014-4">Tom Cruise would reprise his role as Maverick</a>. Producer Jerry Bruckheimer revealed the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/top-gun-director-tony-scott-commits-suicide-at-68-2012-8">late "Top Gun" director Tony Scott</a> was the one who came up with the premise.</p><p>Still, Scott's classic lives on.</p><p><span>"There is an amazing role for Maverick in the movie, and there is no Top Gun without Maverick, and it is going to be Maverick playing Maverick."
