<ul class="summary-list"><li>"Character Limit" is a new book about <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/elon-musk">Elon Musk's</a> takeover of Twitter.</li><li>Authors Ryan Mac and Kate Conger spoke to Business Insider about their reporting.</li></ul><p>If you think you've heard all there is to hear about Elon Musk's chaotic purchase of Twitter — and his sometimes chaotic personal life — a new book will probably dispel those notions.</p><p>Kate Conger and Ryan Mac are the authors of "Character Limit: How Elon Musk Detroyed Twitter." The technology reporters at The New York Times unearthed new details about the <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/elon-musk-twitter">chaotic period in 2022 when Elon Musk decided to purchase Twitter</a> and its subsequent descent into ~whatever it is now~.</p><p>Conger and Mac spoke with Business Insider about their book, which <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://affiliate.insider.com?amazonTrackingID=bi-auto-72653-20&amp;h=8572eaa051a414c53ad61a47613f870ce8ae6b0949ece7be91207e47352924b8&amp;postID=66e337f192d5b68ffc53427b&amp;postSlug=elon-musk-grimes-baby-name-new-book-character-limit-2024&amp;site=bi&amp;u=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.amazon.com%2FCharacter-Limit-Elon-Destroyed-Twitter-ebook%2Fdp%2FB0CW1GBZ6Z%2F">comes out Sept 17.</a></p><p><em>The interview was edited for length and clarity.</em></p><p><strong>Katie Notopoulos: You've both reported on Elon Musk and his companies for a long time. Was there anything during the course of reporting for this book that really surprised you about how he operates?</strong></p><p>Kate Conger: I think something that surprised me about Elon in this process is just sort of how isolated he's become. And especially by the time the Twitter takeover started, he was operating with a very limited and close set of advisors who he had a lot of faith and trust in, but didn't necessarily have a lot of experience in mergers and acquisitions or in running social media companies. So he was being advised by a very limited circle of people who had not a lot of depth of knowledge about the things that he was taking on. And he's always kind of operated in limited circles, but it surprised me just how tiny that world had become by the time he tried to take over Twitter.</p><p><strong>Notopoulos: Everyone's talking about "</strong><a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/why-everyone-in-tech-talking-founder-mode-paul-graham-chesky-2024-9"><strong>Founder Mode</strong></a><strong>" lately, the idea of running a company like it's still in its early days instead of scaling to "manager mode." Musk took over Twitter from its founder, Jack Dorsey, who had arguably been running it — badly — in "manager mode." Musk comes in and wants to go "extremely hardcore," his version of Founder Mode, but it hasn't really worked out. What do you think happened?</strong></p><p>Ryan Mac: I think it's kind of absurd, this discussion now — and there are plenty of examples of Founder Mode not working, but if we believe there's a kernel of truth in Founder Mode, Elon's takeover of Twitter proves, in a way, he is is not the founder. He has run Twitter into the ground in part because he didn't have those early experiences of what it was like building that company from the bottom up.</p><p>I think of <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/elon-musk-tells-advertises-get-lost-twitter-dealbook-summit2023-11">something like what he did with advertising</a> — coming in and being ignorant toward the reliance of the company on advertising. He believed that he could just sell subscriptions immediately, which was his big focus. Call it ignorance or call it, I don't know. But he just didn't have the experience to run a social network. I think he relied on his self-confidence in rocketry or <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/tesla-ceo-elon-musk">building an electric car company</a>. But he was definitely not a social media founder or CEO.</p><p><strong>Notopoulos: That's part of the interesting paradox: he has these really successful two companies, SpaceX and Tesla, where he was the founder (or close to it with Tesla). But then he's </strong><a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/elon-musk-twitter"><strong>really failed with Twitter</strong></a><strong>.</strong></p><p>Conger: I think the thing with Elon that's interesting is he has all this experience in hardware and engineering. But with X and Twitter, it is a fundamentally social problem. It's a problem of how people interact and relate to each other. I don't think that's a problem that Elon has a lot of experience in dealing with and doesn't have a very successful track record in figuring out how to navigate conflict among people.</p><div type="image" title="Kate Conger and Ryan Mack and their book character limi" height="1080" width="1440" msid="113333849" hostid="261" sizebytes="65248"></div><p><strong>Notopoulos: The Wall Street Journal had a story recently about how </strong><a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.wsj.com/tech/elon-musks-twitter-takeover-is-now-the-worst-buyout-for-banks-since-the-financial-crisis-3f4272cb"><strong>Elon Musk's Twitter takeover is now the worst buyout for banks </strong></a><strong>since the 2008 financial crisis. What I found really shocking in your book were details on the projections he made to sell the banks on the deal. These outrageous, "We're going to make five times the revenue in three years," kind of impossible numbers.</strong></p><p>Mac: I am not sure what was going through their heads at the time. I think the actual numbers themselves, which I don't have in front of me, but we're talking about, again, doubling, tripling the revenue — even more. So it just shows how confident he was in himself, how confident he was that Twitter was just this horribly run business run by idiots basically that didn't know how to make money. And he would be the champion that came in and righted the ship that would be able to make this a business because … who would know better than him? He's the guy who is a Top 10 followed account who spends so much time there. Of course, he has all the ideas!</p><p>I think it is interesting how the banks enabled him. These are ostensibly smart people as well, and they went along with it simply to get him his debt financing or get him his investors. I think there is more to be said about that in terms of how he is enabled by these institutions who simply want to be close to him because <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/elon-musk-net-worth">he's the world's richest person</a>.</p><p><strong>Notopoulos: So, how long does this go on? It's a money-losing venture for him. How long does he just keep burning money hoping maybe things will turn around</strong></p><p><em>Conger:</em> I think that's a great question. I mean, the end of X is something that we've thought about a lot. If this was an ordinary business, I think it would come to a conclusion more rapidly. But this is something that Elon can continue to prop up with his own financial resources for quite some time. It's also an open question of: <em>How much money can this business lose</em>?</p><p>The first year after the takeover lost a really significant amount of revenue. Projections for 2024 were that the loss would slow down. We found in our reporting that it hasn't quite slowed down as much as they had hoped. And so it's continuing to lose even more money than what analysts thought would happen this year. And so we're still on a journey to the bottom, and I don't know when exactly will arrive.</p><p><strong>So, a lot of this book is about his mercurial ways of handling his business, but obviously, people are also very interested in Elon Musk as a person. There was something really shocking to me about a baby name situation when he was having his second child with Grimes.</strong></p><p><em>Conger</em>: Elon and Grimes had picked out a name for their daughter that they wanted to use. That name ended up being used for one of Shivon Zilis's twins with Elon. When Grimes found out about it, obviously, she was very upset. She <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.reddit.com/r/Grimes/comments/x7xa86/grimes_posted_on_her_twitter/">posted some song lyrics </a>that she had written about the name essentially being stolen from her. And then, Shivon ended up changing that child's name, which is how the existence of Shivon's children came to light to the public, actually, because the name change paperwork became public. [<em>Business Insider first reported the news that </em><a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/elon-musk-shivon-zilis-secret-twins-neuralink-tesla"><em>Elon Musk had twins with Zilis</em></a><em>, an executive at Neuralink.]</em></p><p><em>Mac</em>: More of the backstory is that Grimes did not know that Shivon was having kids with Elon. Grimes was going to have her second child through a surrogate while Shivon was pregnant with these twins. The twins were born first. There was a boy and a girl, and the girl was given the name Valkyrie Alice Zilis, and Valkyrie was the name that Grimes and Elon had been discussing for their daughter.</p><p>The song that she posted the lyrics for was never made, but we were able to connect the dots and realize that it was about this really messy incident about the name. Shivon's daughter ends up being called Azure, and Grimes's daughter is Exa. So, the name Valkyrie is effectively erased from all of Musk's family for all intents and purposes.</p><p><em>[Business Insider contacted Musk, Zilis, and Grimes, whose real name is Claire Boucher, for comment. They didn't respond. The authors of the book also contacted all three for comment.]</em></p><p><strong>Notopoulos: I have one final question for you guys. Did you find the character limit?</strong></p><p>Conger: We really tested the boundaries of the character limit. I think we submitted a manuscript that was like 40,000 words too long.</p><p>Mac: Jesus, my computer is crashing again.</p>

And after winning her final race of US Olympic Swimming Trials Saturday night, the 24-year-old shared the spotlight - and a name - with Team USA's youngest up-and-comer.</p><p>Katie Grimes finished second in the 800-meter freestyle final to qualify for next month's <keyword id="395647" type="SPORT" weightage="60" keywordseo="Tokyo-Olympics">Tokyo Olympics</keyword>. And like Grimes, Ledecky punched her first ticket to the Olympics in the 800-meter freestyle race.</p><p>Grimes nearly qualified for the Olympics in Wednesday's 1500-meter freestyle final, but fell just short after touching the wall less than a second after the second-place finisher. <ul class="summary-list"><li>It's a case of in with the old and in with the new at the Olympics Games.</li><li>This is because a 66-year-old, and a 12-year-old, are competing in separate events in Tokyo.</li><li>One 13-year-old has already won gold.</li></ul><p>There's a 54-year age gap between the oldest and youngest athlete at this year's Olympic Games in Tokyo.</p><p>Following Friday's opening ceremony and Parade of Nations, a number of the world's top <keyword id="6356028" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="sports">sports</keyword>people have competed in a variety of events including traditional sports like swimming, and new ones like skateboarding.</p><p>Some of the headlines have been generated by the extraordinary participants at the games like a Syrian 12-year-old called Hend Zaza, who made history as the youngest Olympian since 1968.</p><p>Zaza had to overcome numerous obstacles in her homeland as she trained through power cuts caused by civil war to qualify aged 11 for this summer's Olympics.</p><p>Zaza lost in the first round Saturday but, <a href="https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/olympics/57952235" target="_blank" rel="noopener">according to the BBC</a>, said: "My message to everyone who wishes to have the same situation: Fight for your dreams."</p><p>If Zaza represents part of the youth at this year's Games, then Mary Hanna represents the experience because, at 66, the Australian is the oldest Olympian this summer.</p><p>A grandmother, Hanna competes in her seventh Games and is the second-oldest woman to ever participate in the Olympics.</p><p>Hanna's specialty sport is the equestrian discipline of dressage. "It was in the midst of the storm and so reassuring to see that H-E-B was already working to get Texas food and water when our elected officials where giving platitudes instead of plans. Texans are raving about H-E-B as the beloved grocery chain provides food and comfort amid a nightmarish storm

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Beeple's <keyword id="1105" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="art">art</keyword> is set to generate over $10 million on two <keyword id="694817" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="digital-art">digital art</keyword> pieces.</li><li>One buyer flipped his piece for nearly 1,000 times its original value.</li><li>A historic auction house is selling its first NFT for Beeple.</li></ul><p>Digital artist Mike Winkelmann - known online as Beeple - has broken crypto-art records. His art is poised to bring in over $10 million on two digital pieces.</p><p>Winkelmann told Insider, prior to recent months, he'd never tried to sell his work for anywhere near as much as its making now.</p><p>"I've never actually sort of priced any of my work more than $969," Winkelmann said.</p><p>In February, Winkelmann's piece "Crossroad," <a href="https://niftygateway.com/itemdetail/secondary/0x12f28e2106ce8fd8464885b80ea865e98b465149/100010001">sold for $6.6 million</a> in the highest crypto art sale to date. This week, Beeple is poised for another big sale, after putting his "Everydays: The First 5000 Days" collection on Christie's in February.</p><p>The auction, which will run till March 11, has already hit $3.5 million and represents the first digital art sale for Christie's - an auction house that was founded in 1766. The historic auction house will also be making its first foray into cryptocurrencies with the sale by accepting Ether for Winkelmann's piece.</p><p>Winkelmann's piece is a <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/what-does-nft-mean-crytpo-non-fungible-tokens-art-explained-2021-2">non-fungible tokens (NFT). NFTs operate as a new type of digital asset</a>. The digital tokens have rapidly gained popularity during the pandemic, as brands like the NBA and Nike got in on the trend and artists like <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/grimes-nft-art-warnymph-sells-for-millions-20-minutes-2021-3">Grimes sold art collections for nearly $6 million in under 20 minutes.</a></p><p>Currently, most Beeple pieces are selling for well over $100,000, leading a crypto-art boom that has pushed the market for digital tokens to $250 million, according to a <a href="https://nonfungible.com/nft-report-2020">2020 report</a> from tech tracking company L'Atelier BNP Paribas and nonfungible.com.</p><p>NFTs represent an uncharted territory in the market, but the digital assets have already brought in millions for opportunistic buyers.</p><p>One NFT investor was able to flip a Beeple piece for nearly 1,000 times its original purchase price in under six months. The Miami-based art collector Pablo Rodriguez-Fraile told <a href="https://www.cnbc.com/2021/03/01/how-a-10-second-video-clip-sold-for-6point6-million.html">CNBC</a> he bought "Crossroads" because of Beeple's reputation in the art community.</p><p>For many NFT buyers like Rodriguez-Fraile, the digital token's value can be attributed to its perceived uniqueness or authenticity, as well as its ties to the creator.</p><p>"You can go in the Louvre and take a picture of the Mona Lisa and you can have it there, but it doesn't have any value because it doesn't have the provenance or the history of the work," Rodriguez-Fraile told CNBC. "The reality here is that this is very, very valuable because of who is behind it."</p><p>The artists can also continue to benefit from their artwork even after the first sale, as many NFT trading platforms like Nifty Gateway, which was used to sell "Crossroads," allow artists to receive commission from future sales. Winkelmann told Insider the platform's 10% royalty allowed him to make more off Rodriguez-Fraile's resell than the original purchase.</p><p>Nyan Cat artist Chris Torres told Insider - after <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/ethereum-nft-meme-art-nyan-cat-sells-for-300-eth-2021-2">selling his own NFT for nearly $600,000</a> - that NFTs give power back to the artists. </p><p>The name "Beeple" has long been creating a stir on the internet. Winkelmann has been known for making light of controversial topics and his work has been described as satirical, as well as "irreverent" and "visionary," according to Christie's. The cost of a buyout? <a href="https://www.cnn.com/travel/article/wealthy-people-remote-hotels-coronavirus/index.html">$38,000 a day.</a></p><p>"Even though we are in the midst of our annual winter closure, we received several calls from many of our loyal guests asking if we would consider reopening for a buyout," <a href="https://www.cnn.com/travel/article/wealthy-people-remote-hotels-coronavirus/index.html">general manager Stephen Benson told CNN Travel</a>. We have seen so many of the seasonal summer homes in the area become a respite for folks who live in highly populated urban areas since the virus hit," <a href="https://www.cnn.com/travel/article/wealthy-people-remote-hotels-coronavirus/index.html">the hotel's managing director, Justin Grimes, told CNN</a>. "We wanted to help offer additional accommodation options for those trying to distance themselves from dense, multifamily urban settings."</p><h2>Renting out entire countryside and small town escapes is the latest way wealthy people are trying to escape the coronavirus</h2><p>It's a perfect display of the stark class divide in the nation - many people can't even afford to leave their homes (or stop working), let alone flee the state and buy out an entire hotel.</p><p>Wealthy people leaving their homes and <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/coronavirus-photos-people-ignoring-self-isolation-mandates-crowds-around-world-covid19-2020">disregarding self-isolation measures</a> have been deemed "<a href="https://www.theatlantic.com/ideas/archive/2020/03/dont-even-think-about-leaving-new-york-city/608884/">super spreaders</a>," as they often come from coronavirus hotspots like New York and bring the virus to the smaller suburban areas they go to. Once arriving in these small areas, the newly-arrived part-time residents invariably disrupt local life. As a result, there have been reports of <a href="https://pagesix.com/2020/03/30/corona-fleeing-new-yorkers-now-ruining-the-hamptons-stop-shop/">food shortages</a> in towns across the nation. </p><p>Even worse, an influx of new inhabitants can overwhelm the resources a small town has available. Ultrawealthy people are buying out entire hotels for up to $38,000 a day to self-isolate in more secluded areas

<img src="https://static-ssl.businessinsider.com/image/595efcf6d9fccd31008b47e5-1367/katyturblackwell.png" alt="katyturblackwell" /><p class="source"><span><a href="https://twitter.com/BraddJaffy/status/883084188093566977">Screenshot via NBC News</a></span></p><p class="caption">NBC News host Katy Tur and former Ohio secretary of state Ken Blackwell.</p>An NBC News anchor and a member of President Donald Trump's voter-fraud commission clashed during a live interview about the group's attempts to uncover cases of voter fraud in the US.<p>Things went off the rails quickly on Thursday as NBC's Katy Tur told former Ohio secretary of state Ken Blackwell that previous independent studies found no evidence of widespread voter fraud in the US.</p><p>As Tur prefaced her question <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/wonk/wp/2014/08/06/a-comprehensive-investigation-of-voter-impersonation-finds-31-credible-incidents-out-of-one-billion-ballots-cast/?utm_term=.e10d44eb365d">with study data compiled by a Loyola Law School professor</a>, Blackwell attempted to interject.</p><p>"Let me stop you right there," Blackwell said.</p><p>"Hold up, let me finish what I'm saying," Tur insisted.</p><p>Both Tur and Blackwell tried to get the upper hand, but ended up talking over each other for a solid 20 seconds of live television.</p><p>The data Tur had attempted to cite established that there were only <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/wonk/wp/2014/08/06/a-comprehensive-investigation-of-voter-impersonation-finds-31-credible-incidents-out-of-one-billion-ballots-cast/">31 credible incidents of voter fraud out of more than 1 billion votes</a> cast from 2000 to 2014, <a href="http://www.politifact.com/truth-o-meter/statements/2016/oct/17/donald-trump/donald-trumps-pants-fire-claim-large-scale-voter-f/">according to a study</a> by Justin Levitt, a professor at Loyola Law School.</p><p>Blackwell argued that national US voter registration files were "corrupted," with some voters being registered in more than one state, and with deceased citizens remaining on current voter rolls. He appeared to be citing a Pew Charitable Trusts report that <a href="http://www.factcheck.org/2016/10/trumps-bogus-voter-fraud-claims/">asserted</a> a voter registration system upgrade was indeed necessary.</p><p>The report, however, did not suggest that millions of ballots were cast on behalf of dead voters, as Trump repeatedly claimed on the 2016 campaign trail.</p><p>When asked whether Russia's meddling in the US presidential election was one of the commission's considerations, Blackwell said, "Any bad actor - whether foreign or domestic - any action that corrupts the integrity of our system should be fair game for our exploration."</p><p>Some states <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/mike-pence-pushes-back-on-reports-states-reject-voter-fraud-panel-request-2017-7">have pushed back</a> against the commission's activities, including its recent request for a wide array of voter information.</p><p>States that refused to provide the data span the political spectrum, from Alabama to California. Maryland's attorney general, Brian Frosh, said the commission's request was "designed only to intimidate voters and to indulge President Trump's fantasy that he won the popular vote." NBC News interview on Trump's voter-fraud commission goes off the rails seconds after it starts

PODESTA: Trump Jr.'s Holocaust reference was 'consistent' with what he heard 'around the house'

<ul class="summary-list"><li><keyword id="30173" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="chefs">Chefs</keyword> from across the US shared their favorite grocery-store purchases with Insider.</li><li>The foods chefs said they like to purchase ranged from kitchen staples, like eggs and peanut butter, to prepared foods, like rotisserie chicken and sushi.</li><li>Some chefs also said they enjoy buying certain chain exclusives like Publix's fried chicken or Trader Joe's banana-bread mix.</li></ul><p>Even though they're cooking up a <a href="https://www.insider.com/judges-share-ingredients-they-want-people-to-stop-using-on-cooking-shows">variety of gourmet dishes at work</a>, many chefs prefer to keep things simple when they're at home. </p><p>Because of this, some chefs tend to purchase popular, multipurpose ingredients that they can use in a variety of simple dishes or specialty foods they can snack on in a hurry. </p><p>Insider asked chefs across the US about their favorite, underrated items to purchase at the <keyword id="71710" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Grocery-store">grocery store</keyword>. Read on to see what they said. </p><h2>This <keyword id="3699" type="POSITION" weightage="60" keywordseo="Chef">chef</keyword> said her go-to purchase at the <keyword id="6372044" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="grocery">grocery</keyword> store is a popular condiment in Korean cuisine</h2><p>"My favorite grocery store find is gochujang, a traditional Korean fermented red-chili condiment that has a slightly sweet heat and umami-rich flavor," Chef Sohui Kim, former coowner of <a href="https://www.goodfork.com/">The Good Fork</a> in Brooklyn, New York, told Insider.</p><p>Kim said her preferred brand of gochujang is <a href="http://www.gochujangsauce.com/">Chung Jung One</a> because it's made with Korean chili peppers.</p><p>"Gochujang is a workhorse in my pantry and not only for Korean dishes," said Kim. "It's a great thickening agent, with a fantastic kick of flavor. I love the combination of sweet and spicy that it adds to chili, braises, and barbeque sauces."</p><h2>One chef said rotisserie chicken is a great bargain</h2><div type="image" title="rotisserie chicken" height="3718" width="4957" msid="79688287" hostid="261"></div><p>"Rotisserie chicken is a healthy, under-$10 meal that is often overlooked," Yehuda Sichel, formerly a chef at <a href="http://www.abefisherphilly.com/">Abe Fisher</a> in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, told Insider.</p><p>Sichel said it's a great meal option because it's always hot and ready to be eaten. Plus it's pretty versatile when it comes to meal prep. </p><p>"I also love it because often you can break down this one chicken into two to three meals," they added. </p><h2>Chicken bouillon cubes are an underrated staple in any kitchen, said one chef</h2><p>Chris Feldmeier, executive chef at <a href="http://www.loveandsaltla.com/">Love &amp; Salt</a> in Manhattan Beach, California, told Insider that his favorite grocery item is Knorr's chicken bouillon.</p><p>"I absolutely love the richness and body this adds to marinades for all kinds of meat," said Feldmeier.</p><p>"It's a flavor enhancer with an umami taste that balances, blends, and rounds the perception of other tastes." he said, and the cubes' MSG also "intensifies the meaty, savory flavor of <keyword id="6181" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Food">food</keyword>."</p><h2>This chef said crispy onions are tedious to make from scratch, so he typically just buys them</h2><p>Daniel DiStefano, executive chef at NYC's <a href="https://www.madenicenyc.com/">Made Nice</a>, told Insider that even the most talented chef knows making crispy onions can be a messy and painstaking process. Buying them is much easier. </p><p>"The store-bought crispy onions are never greasy, perfectly salted, and, most of all, don't require you to slowly deep-fry onion slices on your stove," he added. </p><h2>This chef said he thinks 'anchovies should be in everything'</h2><p>Garrison Price, executive chef at <a href="https://www.cafeclovernyc.com/">Cafe Clover</a> in NYC's West Village, told Insider that anchovies can be used in "infinite ways."</p><p>These include serving them with bread and butter as a snack or canapé or adding them to pasta sauce to provide it with a layer of umami flavor.</p><p>"Anchovies should be in everything, especially because people won't even know it is there half the time," Price said.</p><h2>This chef said Greek yogurt is his 'blank canvas' for both sweet and savory dishes</h2><div type="image" title="Greek Yogurt" height="581" width="775" msid="79688292" hostid="261"></div><p>Plain Greek yogurt is a home-kitchen staple according to Joe Gentempo, executive chef at <a href="https://parkwoodsrestaurant.com/">Parkwoods</a> in Atlanta, Georgia.</p><p>He said it can be used in place of mayonnaise or sour cream in savory dishes and can become a tasty tzatziki with bit of cucumber and mint. </p><p>"It's a <a href="https://www.insider.com/best-desserts-to-try-out-in-an-air-fryer">perfect breakfast or even dessert</a> - just elevate it with some honey and fresh seasonal fruit. My kids can't get enough," Gentempo told Insider. </p><h2>This chef said he can't resist buying things that are BOGO, nor can he resist a popular Little Debbie's dessert </h2><p>"I always start very focused and with the right intentions when stepping through the automatic doors at a supermarket, but quickly veer off course to any BOGO deal they have to offer," David Bancroft, chef and owner of Alabama barbecue joint <a href="https://www.bowandarrowbbq.com/">Bow &amp; Arrow</a>, told Insider.</p><p>He added, "Nobody really needs two big jars of spaghetti sauce or two huge cans of baked beans at the same time, but eventually we will get to the second one, right?"</p><p>Bancroft also said that it's hard for him to resist Little Debbie's Oatmeal Creme Pies. </p><h2>This chef said she has a few favorite hot sauces that she tends to purchase</h2><p>"Chefs across the board seem to have a love and appreciation for all things spicy," said chef Gemma Kamin-Korn of <a href="https://www.beaubrooklyn.com/">Bar Beau</a> in NYC. [but] once you've tasted the best mayo on earth why try and compete with perfection?"</p><h2>Another said he and his colleagues oftentimes purchase grocery-store sushi</h2><p>Chef Jim Stein, formerly of <a href="http://mccradystavern.com/">McCrady's Tavern</a> and <a href="http://mccradysrestaurant.com/home-page/">McCrady's</a> in Charleston, South Carolina, told Insider that he and several of his chef colleagues frequently buy grocery-store sushi.</p><p>"After a long day in a hot kitchen eating [and] <a href="https://www.insider.com/foods-youre-eating-incorrectly-2018-11">tasting hot food,</a> a lot of chefs end up eating cold leftovers or snacks that are in the reach-ins or walk-in coolers," said Stein.</p><p>He said cold snacks are super refreshing, and <a href="https://www.insider.com/best-and-worst-things-to-order-at-sushi-place-2020-2">nothing is better than a spicy tuna and avocado roll. </a></p><h2>This one chef said he enjoys birthday cake from Publix, an employee-owned supermarket chain</h2><p>Kevin Johnson, executive chef at and owner of <a href="http://www.thegrocerycharleston.com/index.php">The Grocery</a> in Charleston, South Carolina, said he has a soft spot for Publix's birthday cake.</p><p>"There is something nostalgic about that mysteriously moist cake and extremely sweet icing that I really enjoy," Johnson told Insider.</p><p>He said he wouldn't even mind <a href="https://www.insider.com/easy-ways-to-make-boxed-cake-mix-better-2018-7">skipping a homemade cake</a> on his birthday in favor of one of these premade desserts. </p><h2>This chef said he has a special place in his heart for fried chicken from Publix </h2><p>Chef Erik Niel of <a href="http://www.easybistro.com/">Easy Bistro and Bar</a> and <a href="http://www.mainstreetmeatschatt.com/">Main Street Meats</a> in Chattanooga, Tennessee, said his favorite grocery-store purchase is Publix's fried chicken - eaten cold. </p><h2>This chef said she always keeps eggs in her fridge </h2><div type="image" title="eggs" height="3552" width="4736" msid="79688293" hostid="261"></div><p>Katy Smith, executive creative chef at the California-based taqueria <a href="https://eatpuesto.com/">Puesto</a>, said she always makes sure to keep her fridge stocked with eggs.</p><p>"The obvious use is eggs for weekend breakfasts, but sometimes we have breakfast for dinner for a quick, vegetarian weeknight meal," Smith told Insider.</p><p><a href="https://www.insider.com/what-to-add-to-eggs-according-to-chefs-2019-1">She said she also uses eggs</a> to make carbonara sauce, vegetable frittatas, and savory Dutch babies, a type of popover.</p><p>Smith also said she sometimes fries eggs and puts them on top of rice bowls that <a href="https://www.insider.com/reheating-leftovers-taste-better-2018-8">include leftovers from the restaurant she works at.  </a></p><h2>This chef said she uses a lot of peanut butter at home and sometimes even eats it by the spoonful</h2><p>Samantha Davis, former chef du cuisine at <a href="http://henrynomad.com/">Henry</a> at Life Hotel in NYC, told Insider that peanut butter is one of her grocery-store staples.</p><p>"I use and eat so much peanut butter at home," said Davis. "If I'm not eating cereal, I am eating a peanut butter and jelly sandwich or scooping a spoon out and eating it alone."</p><p>She said if she is cooking at home, she'll get a rotisserie chicken and lettuce to make wraps. She'll top them with a simple sauce made with peanut butter, brown sugar, lime juice, soy sauce, chili pepper, and fish sauce. </p><h2>This chef said he appreciates the simplicity of Trader Joe's banana-bread mix</h2><p>"I love the <a href="https://www.insider.com/best-things-to-buy-at-trader-joes-2019-3">Trader Joe's banana-bread mix</a> because it is made with totally organic ingredients - all you have to do is add milk, eggs, and oil," Peter Smith, executive chef at <a href="https://www.marriott.com/hotels/travel/ctdca-jw-marriott-desert-springs-resort-and-spa/">JW Marriott Desert Springs Resort and Spa</a>, told Insider.</p><p>He said one of the best parts of the mix is just how simple it is to make. </p><h2>This chef said freeze-dried fruit is a healthy snack that can double as a tasty garnish</h2><p>Matt Griffin, executive chef and partner at <a href="https://www.happycookingnyc.com/">Happy Cooking Hospitality</a>, a restaurant group based in NYC's West Village, said he likes freeze-dried fruit because it's "totally snack-able and healthy on its own."</p><p>He said freeze-dried fruit is such a versatile pantry staple, too. The one guy who found a better job because of the pandemic.</em></p><h3><strong>Dear Mr. President: Here's how to save Americans, get re-elected, and secure your legacy!</strong></h3><p>President Trump <a href="https://twitter.com/atrupar/status/1258096522929016832">said this week</a> that the <keyword id="1754604" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="coronavirus">coronavirus</keyword> epidemic in the United States should never have happened.</p><p>He's right!</p><p>If we had responded better back in January and February, we could have controlled the coronavirus and minimized its damage, before it got out of hand.</p><p>Many countries —not just one or two, but <em>many</em>— are demonstrating that with a strong, fast, smart response, the coronavirus can be managed. The countries that are demonstrating this, including South Korea, Taiwan, Australia, New Zealand, Norway, many countries in eastern Europe, Germany, and Greece — have lost far fewer people than the US (even adjusting for population) and are closer to recovery than we are.</p><p>We can explain to ourselves <em>ad nauseam</em> why the approach each of these countries took (different in most cases) "wouldn't work here," but we should recognize as we do this that we're just making excuses.</p><p>But that doesn't mean we're doomed to a worst-case. President Trump still has the chance to rebuild the economy while suppressing the pandemic. </p><p>At the moment, the president is urging the country to reopen, even though, in many states, his own criteria for reopening have not yet been met.</p><p>His emphasis on reopening is earning plaudits from some of the president's supporters and others frustrated by the government's restrictions. It's also triggering criticism from those who say the president cares more about the stock market and reelection than he does about Americans' lives.</p><p>But here's the thing. The President does not have to choose between "the economy" and "public health," because he can choose both. The economy will not be fixed until Americans feel safe. And Americans won't feel safe until they see infections and death counts dwindling to near zero.</p><p>So, while the President is urging governors to reopen their states, he can <em>also</em> do other things to get a handle on the coronavirus and restore America to economic <em>and</em> physical health.</p><p>Namely:</p><ul><li>Invest more in national testing and tracing capabilities. (Americans travel a lot, so individual states can't do this alone.)</li><li>Develop and fund an "isolation and quarantine" strategy, so Americans who are sick can go to isolation wards, so they don't stay in their houses and infect others in their families.</li><li>Provide funding and incentives — and, if necessary, directives — for companies to produce huge quantities of necessary supplies and equipment.</li><li>Invest even more in potential treatments and vaccines.</li><li>Deputize experts to issue regular progress reports.</li><li>Work with our allies and trading partners to develop plans to restart international travel and business and help rebuild our partners' economies. </li></ul><p>All this will help the country get the coronavirus under control faster—and, in so doing, save American lives and restore our economy. It will also help make us ready to detect, fight, and suppress any additional waves of infection.</p><p>The President could also take one more step — a step that would help his legacy and leave America with an improved pandemic-management capability long after he leaves office.</p><p>He could push Congress to increase the budget and authority of the Public Health Service, the National Institutes of Health, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the Food and Drug Administration, and other agencies that can protect us from these scourges.</p><p>All this would help save American lives, secure the President's legacy, and help him get reelected.</p><p>So, how about it, Mr. President? <em>—HB</em></p><h2><strong>Will Americans be able to vote in November?</strong></h2><p><strong><div type="image" title="wisconsin election coroanvirus" height="1250" width="2500" msid="75610981" hostid="261"></div></strong></p><p>It will take $4 billion to hold a safe pandemic election, but Congress has only appropriated $400 million. And that's almost the least alarming fact in this <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2020/05/05/magazine/voting-by-mail-2020-covid.html">New York Times Magazine story</a> about securing the <keyword id="7600569" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="2020-election">2020 election</keyword>. </p><p>Another one: Scaling up vote-by-mail could be impossible, since there aren't enough suppliers and they don't have enough equipment to print ballots. </p><p>And then there's the nightmare scenario, where a state legislature could use the excuse of the pandemic to cancel the popular vote, and exercise its constitutional right to appoint presidential electors itself, essentially choosing who wins a state without an election. <em>— DP</em></p><h3><strong>Second and third epidemic "waves" likely</strong></h3><p><div type="image" title="fl covid" height="1200" width="2400" msid="75610985" hostid="261"></div>If the coronavirus plays out the way previous epidemics have played out, we'll likely see a second "wave" of infections this fall and perhaps additional waves after that.</p><p>Insider's <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/coronavirus-second-and-third-wave-of-pandemic-is-now-likely-2020-5">Thomas Colson reports</a> today that German researchers see additional waves as a near certainty.  </p><p>That's a key reason why, even as the US begins to reopen, the government should continue to aggressively pursue every strategy available for reducing the impact of the coronavirus, including investing in testing, contact-tracing, isolation, and medical equipment.</p><p>If there's a second wave, let's be ready. <em>— HB</em></p><h3><strong>The shocking toll COVID-19 is taking on African-Americans </strong></h3><p>This week brings still more grim <keyword id="6355005" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="news">news</keyword> about how hard the pandemic is hitting black Americans. </p><p>A study found that the 22% of US counties with disproportionate numbers of black American residents have accounted for <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/nation/2020/05/06/study-finds-that-disproportionately-black-counties-account-more-than-half-covid-19-cases-us-nearly-60-percent-deaths/">60% of COVID-19 deaths</a>. The CDC reported recently that an <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/83-percent-coronavirus-hospitalizations-georgia-black-patients-cdc-report-2020-4">astonishing 83% of those hospitalized </a>for the disease in Georgia were black. And new research in the UK found that blacks there have been dying of COVID-19 at more than four times the rate of whites. </p><p>The pandemic is also economically punishing minorities harder. According to a <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/business/2020/05/06/layoffs-race-poll-coronavirus/">Washington Post-Ipsos poll</a>, 20% of Hispanics and 16% of black Americans report being furloughed or laid off, compared to 11% of whites. <em>— DP</em></p><h3><strong>Cell-phone data shows that people from one meat-packing plant traveled to 48 states</strong></h3><p><div type="image" title="Tectonix GEO meatpacking plant" height="650" width="1300" msid="75610988" hostid="261"></div>Meatpacking plants account for many of the biggest coronavirus infection "clusters" in the United States.</p><p>This is a disaster for meat-packing workers and their families. And it has affected our meat supply chains, hurting animal producers, meatpacking companies, and consumers. And it's also potentially spreading infections to other areas of the country.</p><p>As Insider's <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/phone-location-data-tyson-meat-shipments-dispersing-across-us-2020-5">Aaron Holmes reports</a>, phone data suggest that people who worked at or visited one Iowa meatpacking plant went on to visit 48 US states.  </p><p>The data do not prove (or even suggest) that any of these people were infected or infected anyone else. But it's a reminder of how interconnected we are and how much we depend on interstate travel. — HB</p><h3><strong>The administration reportedly "shelved" detailed reopening guidance from the CDC</strong></h3><p><strong><div type="image" title="Trump CDC" height="1000" width="2000" msid="75610992" hostid="261"></div></strong></p><p>The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention prepared a 17-page document detailing "reopening" guidelines for specific types of organizations, including bars and restaurants, childcare facilities, schools and camps, employers with vulnerable populations, and religious organizations </p><p>According to the Associated Press, the Trump Administration is<a href="https://apnews.com/7a00d5fba3249e573d2ead4bd323a4d4"> not allowing the CDC to publish this document</a>. But if you'd like to read it, the AP has <a href="https://www.documentcloud.org/documents/6883734-CDC-Business-Plans.html">helpfully uploaded it here</a>.</p><p>(I, for one, am grateful to be able to read this guidance. We taxpayers pay $7 billion a year to fund the CDC. On a per-person basis, that's about $21 apiece. It's nice to get something for that money!) <em>— DP</em></p><h3><strong>Are you ready for a "post-corona" office experience? Check out what it will look like!</strong></h3><p>Studies suggest that the coronavirus spreads most easily in confined, crowded indoor spaces where there's prolonged exposure to infected people.</p><p>As Insider's <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/going-back-to-work-office-design-coronavirus-2020-5">Katie Canales reports</a>, one office designer predicts that this will lead to significant changes in office design.
