Uttar Pradesh government has started a facial recognition-based teacher and student attendance monitoring system for the public schools in the state. The artificial intelligence-based attendance monitoring system has already been launched in <keyword id="694821" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Kasturba-Gandhi-Balika-Vidyalayas" source="Orion">Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidyalayas</keyword> (KGBV) -- a chain of residential schools meant for girls belonging to impoverished backgrounds -- to tackle the issue of proxy teachers and ghost students. Vijay Kiran Anand, director general, school education, said, "The face recognition technology (FRT) will have two-fold purpose. Firstly, it will help us encourage those teachers whose classroom transactions have emerged as game-changers in delivering quality education. Secondly, FRT will sort out a major issue of proxy teachers, deduplication of students, and give us the headcount." The technology is currently operational in Gujarat. Earlier, the UP education department had launched a 'selfie' scheme to mark the attendance of staff and pay them their salaries. "Selfies were uploaded from outside the school premises and there was no way we could track their location. The advanced <keyword id="8040115" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Prerna-App" source="Orion">Prerna app</keyword> will only mark attendance of students and teachers only if they are in the school range," said an official. For FRT, users will have to register with their 10-digit mobile number (usually the number of wardens in case of KGBV) and generate a PIN. Using this PIN, KGBV wardens will use cameras to click photographs of the school premises and capture the faces of teachers and other staff. With a massive six lakh teachers and 1.92 crore students enrolled in state-run schools from Class 1 to 8, Uttar Pradesh faces several challenges in monitoring their presence. Close to 80,000 students are enrolled in 746 KGBVS in the state. Gandhinagar Taking a brave and according to some a <keyword id="1255712" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="hasty-decision">hasty decision</keyword>, the <keyword id="6370685" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Gujarat-government">Gujarat government</keyword> on Wednesday announced that it has decided to reopen <keyword id="37180" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="schools">schools</keyword> for classes 10th and 12th and colleges in the state from January 11, provided Covid-19 guidelines are followed. The education minister also announced that decision regarding <keyword id="10552146" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="other-classes">other classes</keyword> and primary schools will be taken later. Bhupendrasinh Chudasama, the education minister of <keyword id="6354766" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Gujarat">Gujarat</keyword> said, "In a meeting held today, headed by the Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani, it has been decided to reopen the schools for classes 10th and 12th and colleges in the state. Before that, I had lots of discussions with my department officials, educational experts, academicians and other stakeholders about going for the continuation of education. Today, the cabinet has decided that for these classes and colleges, education will be allowed to continue from the <keyword id="10542555" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="january-11th">January 11th</keyword>. "The colleges and universities, the classes for postgraduate, medical and paramedical will also be reopened. The present system of providing online education will also have to be continued by the educational institutes in the state," added Chudasama. The entire teaching staff and all students will have to be checked for their temperature through Thermal Guns. Gujarat to reopen schools for class 10&12 and colleges from January 11

The <keyword id="6354766" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Gujarat">Gujarat</keyword> government on Wednesday decided to reopen high and higher secondary <keyword id="37180" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="schools">schools</keyword> and colleges in the state from November 23 subject to adherence of Covid-19 guidelines. However, there has been no decision on reopening of primary schools. The government said it will analyse the feedback on implementation of Wednesday's decision and then decide. <keyword id="6355445" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="education">Education</keyword> Minister Bhupendrasinh Chudasama said: "A Cabinet meeting chaired by Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani on Wednesday decided to reopen schools and colleges in the state. Before that, I held discussions with my department officials, education experts, academics and other stakeholders on continuation of studies. "The Cabinet decided that after Diwali, from November 23, all high and higher secondary schools, colleges and universities will hold teaching in their respective premises. For this, they shall strictly follow the Standard Operating Protocol of the central government." "In the first stage, in colleges and universities, classes for postgraduate, medical and paramedical students will be resumed. Moreover, classes of only final-year students of undergraduate courses will be resumed. In engineering streams also, classes of final-year students will resume. Similarly, ITIs and polytechnics will be reopened. The present system of providing online education will also have to be continued by various institutes in the state," added Chudasama. The Minister said that the decision was applicable to all schools and colleges in the state -- government, grant in aid, self-financed, Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidyalaya and all schools under Social Justice and Empowerment Department. For the remaining schools, the government will decide later. The Minister said that though attendance by students will not be mandatory, schools and colleges will have to obtain written consents from parents on a form provided by the government. Principals of all educational institutions will ensure that all SOP are in place and followed in letter and spirit. The teaching staff and all students coming to the institutions will be checked for body temperatures through thermal guns. "For physical distancing, we are giving the educational institutions the option of odd-even formula and alternate-day teaching so that students keep safe distance. It will also be ensured that students, even during recess or other times, don't crowd and maintain physical distance," added Chudasama. "The Education Department officials and District Education Officers will monitor schools and colleges in their respective areas and submit daily reports to us," the Education Minister added. For the continuation of education in primary schools, Chudasama said: "After we get a feedback on this decision and how it works out, the government will decide on resuming studies in primary schools." The radio broadcast is initiated by the UN International Children's Fund (UNICEF), <keyword id="54028" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Sarva-Shiksha-Abhiyan">Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan</keyword> (SSA), and the Uttar Pradesh government. It aims to enhance pronunciation and speaking skills of students, with 15 minute sessions. It will broadcast a total of 120 episodes.
