APMC and the rice mills across the state will remain closed. The State Rice Mill Owners' Association has stopped all activities and has demanded that the central government reverse its decision and the <keyword id="6355040" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="gst-council" source="Orion">GST Council</keyword> take a review of its decision to impose GST on foodgrains. The GST will apply on foodgrains from July 18. It will shoot up the prices of rice, jower, ragi, which is going to impact the poor, middle and labour class. Due to the inflation, the middle and poor class have no capacity to cope up with price rise in most needed foodgrains which are used to prepare staple food. Kogundi Bakkeshappa, Davanagere District Rice Mill Owners Association President stated that the owners of rice mills have been making submissions in this regard since long back and they haven't got any response. "If GST is implemented by the Central government, we will meet and discuss the future course of action," he said. Foodgrains like rice, wheat, pulses and others were exempted from tax since 1983 considering that they are used widely by people. After GST, a quintal of rice will cost Rs 300 to Rs 400 more. The prices of ragi, pulses, and jowar will also see a rise. Karnataka traders and labour unions observe bandh against 5% GST on rice, foodgrains

Despite government warning, <keyword id="391175" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="pro-Kannada">pro-Kannada</keyword> organisations on Friday decided to go ahead with the <keyword id="535643" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Karnataka-Bandh">Karnataka Bandh</keyword> on December 5 in protest against the formation of the Maratha Development Authority (MDA). Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa had on November 13 announced setting up the MDA, earmarking Rs 50 crore for the overall development of the Maratha population in the state. The move was seen in some quarters as an attempt to woo the sizeable community members in Basavakalyan Assembly segment in Bidar district in north Karnataka and Belagavi Lok Sabha constituency bordering Maharashtra where by-elections are due. The decision has not gone down well with several pro-Kannada organisations. The consortium of the pro-Kannada organisations such as Kannada <keyword id="10304053" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="chalavali-Vatal-paksha">Chalavali Vatal Paksha</keyword> (KCVP) and Karnataka Rakshana Vedike (Shivarame Gowda faction) passed a resolution opposing the government move and deciding to stage the bandh. The Ola-Uber Drivers and Owners Association too has extended its support to the bandh. In a statement, KCVP chief Vatal Nagaraj claimed support of the former chief of the Kannada Development Authority Mukhyamantri Chandru and former head of the Kannada Film Chamber of Commerce, Sa Ra Govindu, among others, for the consortium. However, two other factions of Karnataka Rakshana Vedike belonging to T A Narayana Gowda and Praveen Shetty have said they would take a call only after discussing with their leaders. As the matter snowballed into a controversy after his announcement, Yediyurappa clarified that he was only setting up the Maratha Development Authority and not the Marathi Development Authority. He stated that Maratha community members are "staunch Hindutvavadis", many of whom need to be elevated socially and economically. The Chief Minister had warned that he would not allow any 'forced bandh' on December 5. "We will take strict action if the forced bandh is called," he had said. Championed by Karnataka Sanghatanegala Okkoota, the February 13 bandh calls for implementing the Sarojini Mahishi report that advocates job reservations in Karnataka for Kannadigas both in the private and public sectors. Support to the bandh The organizations that have supported the bandh in Karnataka on February 13 are The Karnataka Film Chamber of Commerce (KFCC), Lorry Owners Association, Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU). Cabs and taxis will not ply in the state For the bandh that will extend from 6 am to 6 pm on February 13, the app-based cab operating companies like Uber and Ola have extended their support and hence they will not ply on the day. Namma Metro is expected to function as usual without any break. About Sarojini Mahishi report Sarojini Mahishi was a prominent leader in Janata Party. An MP for four times, she was appointed by the Ramakrishna Hegde Government to chair the panel in 1983 for making recommendations regarding the reservation of jobs in the state. In June 1984, the committee submitted an interim report and later tabled a final report in 1986 that made 56 recommendations. Out of them, 45 recommendations were accepted by the Karnataka Government. Why the bandh in Karnataka Some of the suggestions made in the Sarojini Mahishi report recommend that a certain percentage of jobs must be given to the Kannadigas in private and public sector and multinational firms operating in the state of Karnataka. Some recommendations made by the report urge that all the jobs in Group C and Group D categories in the central government departments and PSUs functioning in Karnataka must be given to Kannadigas while the report also advocates making 80 percent reservations for Kannadigas in Group B and Group A jobs of the abovementioned segments. Several suggestions made by the report are yet to be implemented and the February 13 bandh urges for the same.

As per the report, Kannadigas should hold a certain percentage of jobs across PSUs and multinationals. State organisations like the Karnataka Film Chamber of Commerce (KFCC), Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU), and Lorry Owners Association are also backing the strike. Back to 1983 Sarojini Mahishi who is now the leader of the Janata Party was appointed to look into the matter of reservation in 1983. The next year, they submitted the report, which was tabled before the Karnataka government in 1986. Of the 58 recommendations made, the government accepted 45. The report seeked reservations for Kannadigas in central government departments for ‘Group C’ and ‘Group D’ jobs. It also demanded a 65% quota for ‘Group A’ jobs. However, it was vehemently opposed by private companies in the state. Coronavirus brings Kannada film industry to its knees

Bengaluru, Sep 3 (IANS) The Karnataka Central Crime Branch (CCB) has arrested a person for allegedly peddling narcotic drugs in the city, the police said on Thursday. "We have arrested Ravi Shankar after getting evidence that he was peddling drugs. We have also secured his custody for five days to interrogate him to ascertain to whom all did he supply the banned drugs," Bengaluru Joint Commissioner of Police Sandeep Patil told reporters here. Shankar is also said to be a friend of Kannada film actress Ragini Dwivedi, who has been summoned to appear before the CCB sleuths on Friday after she failed to do so on Thursday. "We have served Ragini another notice to appear for questioning on Friday at the CCB office after she said that she could not come today (Thursday) as she was unwell and sought time till September 7," said Patil. According to sources, Shankar is an official in the state Regional Transport Office (RTO) at Jayanagar in the city's upscale suburb. "Shankar is learnt to have attended rave parties with Ragini where drugs like marijuana (ganja), cocaine and hashish were used," said a source. City police have began a crack down since Monday after noted Kannada film producer Inderjit Lankesh alleged that about a dozen Sandalwood actors were into drugs and there was a nexus between them and drug mafias. Ragini, 30, is the first Kannada film actor to be summoned by the CCB after Lankesh on August 29 alleged that actors and musicians were involved in consuming banned drugs during shooting sessions and at rave parties organised by various stakeholders. Lankesh's startling revelations about the rampant abuse of banned drugs in the multi-crore film industry came three days after the Narcotic Control Bureau (NCB) busted a drug trafficking racket in the city and arrested former Kannada television actress D. Anikha and two of her accomplices, R. Ravindran and M. Anoop, on August 26. The central agency also seized huge cache of drugs from the accused, including 145 ecstasies or MDMA pills and Rs 2.2 lakh in cash from the Royal Suites Hotel Apartment in the city's northeast suburb on August 21 and more pills in a follow-up raid last week. The drug racket is suspected to supply recreational and party drugs to Sandalwood actors, children of VIPs, students and others. "Noted musicians and actors in the Kannada film industry are under the scanner after their links to drugs came to light," an NCB official had said earlier. Lankesh came to the CCB office earlier in the day for the second time on summons by Patil, who is investigating the multi-crore drug scam that rocked the Kannada film industry. "I presented myself before the CCB for the second time on summons. But I cannot divulge the details of what I presented to the officials. Let them (CCB) investigate the charges and truth will come out," asserted Lankesh. Lankesh also claimed that he had given material evidence on the alleged drug abuse among the Sandalwood actors. A miffed Karnataka Film Chamber of Commerce (KFCC) on Wednesday denied that some actors had drug links and urged the police to investigate the claims made by Lankesh on the alleged nexus between the industry and the suppliers of banned substances. "As Lankesh gave names of a dozen Kannada actors to the CCB on August 31 and submitted some documents in support of his claims, we will take action if the police prove that the accused are guilty," KFCC representative Sa Ra Govindu told reporters here. Lankesh (43) is the son of noted editor late P. Lankesh, who had launched the popular "Lankesh patrika" (weekly tabloid) in Kannada in the 1980s. Despite government schemes such as the <keyword id="2517872" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Swachh-Bharat-Abhiyan">Swachh Bharat Abhiyan</keyword> and the <keyword id="2421305" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Smart-City-project">Smart City project</keyword>, India continues to hold its position as one of the top e-waste generating countries. The other countries high on the list are China, USA, Japan and Germany. India generates about two million tonnes of e-waste per year and recycles about 438,085 tonnes annually. Maharastra is the largest contributor, accounting for 19.8% of the e-waste produced, but only recycles about 47,810 tonnes of that per year. According to the study, here’s how the other states fare on the production and recycle scale. All figures are annual ones: <ul><li>Tamil Nadu accounts for 13% and recycles about 52,425</li><li>Uttar Pradesh accounts for 10.1% and recycles about 86,130</li><li>West Bengal accounts for 9.8%</li><li>Delhi accounts for 9.5%</li><li>Karnataka accounts for 8.9 %</li><li>Gujarat accounts for 8.8% </li><li>Madhya Pradesh accounts for 7.6%</li></ul> So, what exactly IS e-waste? Discarded electronics like computers, motherboards, circuit chips, printed circuit boards, mobile phones, data storage devices, TVs, refrigerators, headphones, display screens etc...all come under the e-waste category. Unsafe <keyword id="114175" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="recycling">recycling</keyword> and disposal of such e-waste emits chemicals and pollutants. High and prolonged exposure to these by-products can damage a person's nervous system, blood, kidneys and impair brain development. The pollutants can also cause respiratory disorders, skin diseases, bronchitis, lung cancer, heart, liver and spleen damage, says the report. “The sad part is that a mere 5% of India's total e-waste gets recycled due to poor infrastructure, legislation and framework which lead to a waste of diminishing natural resources, irreparable damage of environment and health of the people working in the industry. Over 95% of e-waste generated is managed by the unorganised sector and scrap dealers in this market, dismantle the disposed of products instead of recycling it,” the report added. The global e-waste is expected to increase upto 52.2 million tonnes or 6.8kg per individual by 2021 for 44.7 million tonnes reported in 2016. The net worth of all the e-waste present exceeds $61 billion as of 2016. This is more than the GDP of most of the countries in the world.
