New Delhi, March 17 (IANS) While <keyword id="3658" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="India" source="Orion">India</keyword> still awaits to experience the 5G technology, the sales penetration of 5G-capable smartphones reached 51 per cent globally in January this year, surpassing the penetration of 4G smartphones for the first time, a new report showed on Thursday. China, North America, and Western Europe were the biggest drivers of this growth. China had the highest 5G penetration in the world at 84 per cent in January. The push for 5G from Chinese telecom operators, combined with the readiness of original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) to supply competitively priced 5G smartphones to consumers, enabled this growth, according to Counterpoint Research. "After Apple shifted to 5G in October 2020 with the iPhone 12 Series, North America and Western Europe saw a natural increase in the sales penetration of 5G smartphones," said research analyst <keyword id="3007298" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="karn-chauhan" source="Orion">Karn Chauhan</keyword>. This demand is also fuelled by iPhone users who are ready for new devices after years of holding on to their older <keyword id="57315" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="iphones" source="Orion">iPhones</keyword>. For many, holding periods are nearing four years, the average replacement cycle for iPhones. "Thanks to the affordable chips offered by MediaTek and <keyword id="104695" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="qualcomm" source="Orion">Qualcomm</keyword>, Android 5G smartphones entered the mid-to-high ($250-$400) price segment and are now trickling down to the $150-$250 price range, contributing one-fifth of the 5G sales in January," Chauhan said. Asia-Pacific, Middle East, and Latin America are the next focus areas for OEMs to increase 5G penetration. 5G models in the sub-$150 price segment are the sweet spot for these regions, which are currently dominated by 4G. "The low-end 5G SoC is priced more than $20 at present. Once it comes down to sub-$20, we will start seeing 5G smartphones in the budget segment," said the report. IPL 2024: Will rain play spoilsport in much-awaited blockbuster CSK vs RCB clash?

New Delhi, Mar 17 () Shipments of TVs in the Indian market grew by 15 per cent to 15 million units in 2019, which is the highest-ever, according to a report by Counterpoint Research. The growth was driven mainly by budget smart TVs with 32-inch screen size in the sub-USD 150 price band, it added. Though Korean electronics major Samsung continues to lead the overall TV market, the emerging smart TV segment is being cornered by the newer players such as Xiaomi and TCL, the research firm said. Xiaomi is now the leader in the smart TV segment with 40 per cent growth in 2019, Counterpoint said in its latest analysis on the Indian TV market. "Samsung continues to lead the overall TV market but the emerging smart TV segment is being cornered by the newer players," the firm's Research Analyst Debasish Jana said. "Smart TV was the fastest-growing segment up 25 per cent YoY. The smart TV market in India was mostly driven by brands like Xiaomi, Samsung and emerging tail brands such as TCL, Vu and others, which are leveraging their growing channel presence both online and offline to target the new users and upgrade users," he said. Brands like Xiaomi, TCL and VU have been expanding over the last few years taking on market leaders as Samsung. LG, Sony, and Panasonic, Jana said. Popular brands like Samsung, LG and Sony are experiencing a decrease in their non-smart TV business, while small brands such as BPL, Sansui and others are still banking on the non-smart TV segment that mainly caters to the rural market, B2B segment or a second bedroom TV in many cases. According to Senior Analyst Karn Chauhan, India is one of the largest markets in the world with more than 200 million potential TV households and it is still under-penetrated which makes it a more attractive growth market. "Though affordability and value for money are the key growth drivers. The new crop of brands such as Xiaomi, TCL and others are tapping their existing relationships with e-commerce channels such as Flipkart, Amazon, etc to successfully distribute the TVs affordably with a direct-to-consumer model," he said. According to the report, LED TVs still account for more than 90 per cent of the market in India, while rest are from OLED and QLED TV segment. "LG's share has taken a hit due to lower than expected performance in the non-smart TV market," said report. While Sony's overall TV shipments declined 14 per cent, smart TVs on the other hand helped it to post 3 per cent annual growth. "TCL made 110 per cent YoY growth this year. Its smart TV business grew even more with a 186 per cent YoY increase, thanks to its affordable smart TV," it said. Brands like Kodak and Thomson made an "impressive 40 per cent YoY growth" in the market, while VU and BPL have recorded 16 per cent and 35 per cent growth respectively. KRH KRH ABMABM

Chinese smartphone makers <keyword id="1731609" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Oppo">Oppo</keyword> and <keyword id="215177" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Vivo">Vivo</keyword> are building ammunition to beat <keyword id="10591" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Samsung">Samsung</keyword> in India and for this, they are raking in whopping Rs 2, 200 crore in marketing this year. The amount apparently exceeds the marketing budget of Samsung, LG, <keyword id="6354248" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Videocon">Videocon</keyword>, and Sony. Oppo and Vivo are going to spend the money in expansion of their sales network by 25% through non-conventional stores, and consumer electronic stores. Reportedly, Oppo and Vivo have also asked several smaller cellphone stores to reduce their focus on Samsung smartphones. For this, they are willing to compensate the potential loss of business. "Oppo-Vivo are focusing on volume sales, paying retailers upfront for prominent signages and branding for the next 1-2 years and even offering 5-10% more margin to retailers and shopfloor sales promoters," a senior executive with a leading cellphone retail chain told ET. They are taking up the outdoor advertising space like never before. ET reported the two companies are spending more than Rs 20 crore each on outdoor media in large cities and are also expanding the advertisement thrust to smaller towns and rural markets. They are now approaching shops or spots that do not even deal with cellphones. Counterpoint Research analyst Karn Chauhan said Oppo and Vivo are ramping up their distribution presence driven by strong push from their aggressive marketing campaigns. "Ramping up not just the offline presence but their service network and bringing new features in the product portfolio will be the key to beating Samsung in India," he told ET.

CyberMedia Research (CMR) finding revealed that the South Korean device maker’s smartphones share stood at 24.6%. Meanwhile, domestic handset maker <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=micromax" target="_BLANK￿￿￿￿">Micromax</a>’s shares stood at 14.8% and <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=intex" target="_BLANK￿￿￿￿">Intex</a> at 10.4% during Q2 ended June 30. 
 "While <keyword id="10591" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Samsung">Samsung</keyword>'s share continues to be ahead of its nearest competitor, there could be some advances at second and third spot, primarily affecting <keyword id="71696" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Micromax">Micromax</keyword> if it does not devise and implement a more robust marketing strategy to grow its shipments," Faisal Kawoosa, Lead Analyst, Telecoms Practice, CMR said. 
 
The research firm said the overall market grew 7% quarter-on-quarter (QoQ), while smartphones alone grew at 24.8% in <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=mobile+shipment" target="_BLANK￿￿￿￿">shipments</a> terms during the April-June period. 
 
India shipped a total of 56.6 million handsets during the same period and 43% of them were smartphones. 
 
Meanwhile, the contribution of <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=chinese+smartphone" target="_BLANK￿￿￿￿">Chinese brands</a> also grew 97% year-on-year (YoY) during Q2 as against 48% for Indian brands within the smartphones segment. 
 
In a statement, CMR said such influence and acceptance of Chinese brands poses a challenge to emerging as well as incumbent Indian brands of smartphones. 
 
Players like Intex have believed in reaching out to first time smartphone users, and this strategy has paid off very well for them, giving them entry into the "Top 3's list," Karn Chauhan, Analyst, CMR's India Telecoms Practice said.
