<keyword id="19895282" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="mumbai" source="keywords">Mumbai</keyword>, As many as 86 per cent of Internet users enjoy OTT (Over The Top) audio and video services, more than half of them from the hinterlands, making it the top use-case for Internet in the country, according to an industry report. The rise of digital entertainment services have been bolstered by the rise of smart TV, smart speakers, firesticks, chromecasts, growing at 58 per cent from 2021 to 2023 as more people are accessing video content over Internet-only devices (208 million) than conventional linear TV (181 million), said a report by the <keyword id="20749434" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="internet-and-mobile-association" source="keywords">Internet and Mobile Association</keyword> and the marketing data and analytics company <keyword id="20200137" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="kantar" source="keywords">Kantar</keyword>. The report also finds that rural users are driving all these use-cases, accounting for more than 50 percent of the user base. The report, based on the inputs from over 90,000 households across all the states and Union Territories, barring <keyword id="20039270" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="lakshadweep" source="keywords">Lakshadweep</keyword>, was released at the ongoing India Digital Summit 2024. The second and third most popular use-cases of the Internet are communications with 621 million users, and social media with 575 million users. There were over 823 million active Internet users in the country as of 2023, meaning more than 55 per cent of people in the country have used the Internet last year, which is a modest 8 per cent growth over the previous year. At 442 million, rural users are in a majority, accounting for over 53 per cent of the total user base. From a gender perspective, the male-female ratio of Internet users rose from 71:29 in 2015 to 54:46 in 2023, which is almost at par with the overall sex ratio of the addressable population in the country, says the report. However, the report finds that net adoption growth rate has been decelerating with rural market, which has been driving Internet growth rates for the past many years, slowing down by 11 per cent in 2023 over 2022, pulling down the overall growth rate to 8 per cent. The report further said 57 per cent users prefer to access content in their local languages, with Tamil, Telegu, and <keyword id="19901815" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="malayalam" source="keywords">Malayalam</keyword> having the strongest language preference for content. States with the lowest Internet user base have the fastest growth rates now with Jharkhand (46 per cent penetration) and Bihar (37 per cent penetration) showing above average growth rates of 12 per cent and 17 per cent, respectively.

And these shorter ads are getting better if a report by marketing analytics company Kantar is to be believed. As of 2022, 17% of the shorter ads that were tested, cleared the threshold for creativity and effectiveness— as opposed to 7% a year earlier. The rampant popularity of short form video content has made it tougher for advertisers to keep it sharp and singular with vivid dramatisations. <keyword id="169310" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="digital-advertising" source="Orion">Digital advertising</keyword> is growing but those ads that are customised to the platforms are the ones which do better, Soumya Mohanty, managing director and chief client officer at Kantar, tells Business Insider India. Content can be the same, but it has to be customised. “Earlier, a TV ad used to be put online – that’s changing. It has to be customised to the platform, but the challenge is to do so in a way without losing coherence. When I see an ad on FB (Facebook) or YouTube, they turn out to be totally different and that doesn’t help, so integration has to be there,” Mohanty says, explaining how the ad world is fast-evolving. The importance of coherence in the performance of an ad has doubled in importance since 2015, as compared to the pre-2014 era, the Kantar report says. While mediums are different, communication should be similar across TV, YouTube, OOH, print and banner videos. OOH refers to out-of-home advertising and includes billboards, posters etc. What does Bharat want? The eyeball share of ads have been suffering as the number of screens are rising, but the essence of what India wants in ads is the same, observes Kantar. “India wants stories and emotions,” says Mohanty. Then there is an emerging area of buyers who necessitate brands to customise it to their sensibilities too — Bharat. The pie of rural and small town consumers is rising. The market is seeing 2.4x faster growth in rural areas compared with urban areas across premium segments in home, personal and food &amp; beverage (F&amp;B) categories, says the Kantar report. The rural consumer wants her product first and entertainment next; and the ad message needs to be clear and simple without metaphors, and should signal cultural familiarity. “It’s not that you can’t show them an aspirational product or a lifestyle, but do not show them something they are not comfortable with,” says Mohanty. In the last few months, a lot of ads have failed both at the urban, rural and even national level. Mohanty believes that the reason for the same is low testing of ads. “It’s because people decide to go with their gut feeling instead of testing. During testing, red flag ads always get caught. And brands should never do anything that they have to take back,” Mohanty says. Kantar has assessed a multitude of ads to pick the most effective ones across categories. Hindustan Unilever won the most laurels with wins across three categories — ‘food and beverage’, ‘home care’ and ‘un-stereotype’ for Red Label, Surf Excel and Bru, respectively, for TV medium. Welspun walked away with the top honours in the digital category for its QuickDry towel ad.

India’s top brands have borne the brunt of the global economic downturn in 2023. The combined value of Kantar BrandZ’s top-75 Indian brands shed 4% of their value to $379 billion in 2023. Yet, they have fared better than their global counterparts, as its global list has shed 20% of its value. Most of this loss in brand value was seen in Indian tech brands whose value shrunk by 14%. The brands have a major presence in international markets, and have been impacted by global pressures, recession threats and geopolitical instability, says Kantar. “If you exclude tech, the combined brand value is quite stable,” said Soumya Mohanty, managing director and chief client officer, South Asia, Insights Division of Kantar. TCS on the top, as usual The spot of India’s most valuable brand, however, is retained by tech giant TCS. It has shed 6% of its value but has fared better than tech as a sector. “TCS has a strong corporate reputation which makes it more likely to retain clients and business. It can also help enable customer retention which is also a factor that adds to brand value,” Deepender Rana, executive managing director of South Asia Insights Division at Kantar told Business Insider India. Infosys’ brand value dropped by 17%, while HCL Tech’s brand value rose by 3%. Both these brands made it to the top 10. Wipro’s brand value dropped by a sharp 42%. The rest of the list is dominated by banks, telecom companies with only one consumer company, Asian Paints in the top 10. risers of the year. TVS, valued at $1.9 billion, occupies the 51st rank. The company has gained 59% in value and leapt 24 places thanks to a number of successful product launches and a 10-year partnership with BMW that gives it leverage in markets such as Europe, the US and Canada. Mahindra is valued at $2.01 billion and occupies the 47th rank. Mahindra, which grew its value by 48%, made itself incredibly meaningful in consumers’ eyes, and also significantly boosted its salience. The sector saw the second highest category growth of 19%, after tobacco. Royal Enfield’s value also swelled, thanks to Indians’ preference for premium products. A lot of Indian auto brands, like Tata Motors, also entered EV markets and are able to meet consumer needs better, observes Rana. “Auto companies’ value declined during Covid and made a comeback after they dealt with supply chain issues and dealt with bottlenecks,” said Mohanty. India’s largest auto company Maruti Suzuki, however, shed 5% of its brand value, while Bajaj Auto’s brand value went up by 9%. The value in finance Financial services brands have grown their brand value by 6% with 16 brands and contributing to the biggest chunk of the total brand value. Their growth is attributed to growth in digital banking and Axis Bank whose value swelled 28% and now ranks at 17. ICICI Bank which ranks at no 6 also has seen its brand value swell by 18%. Two of this year’s new entrants also belong to the fintech sector — PhonePe and Cred. This is in spite of the fact that tech as a sector saw its value go down during the year. PhonePe has made its debut on the list at No.21 with a value of $4.4 billion. It has quickly become India’s leading digital payment app by investing heavily in the strength of its infrastructure, building connections with partner banks, and developing a huge network of merchant acceptance points, said Kantar. Meanwhile, Cred has entered at no 48 with a brand value of $2 billion. “Growth of credit and other digital trends are adding to the value of fintechs. There is a need for these services and brands are doing a good job of providing them,” Mohanty tells Business Insider India. PayTM, Zomato, Swiggy, Flipkart, Naukri, Oyo and Nykaa have shed value; while Byju’s hasn’t been included in the list this year. FMCG as a sector has seen its brand value remain stable during the year.

TCS retains No 1 spot as India’s top brand but tech sector takes a hit

Ahead of the summer vacation, 85 cent parents are worried about kids spending excessive screen time during the break, a survey report commissioned by <keyword id="18635" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="amazon" source="Orion">Amazon</keyword> said on Tuesday. According to the survey conducted by <keyword id="1199021" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="kantar" source="Orion">Kantar</keyword> for Amazon in March, over 90 per cent of parents surveyed believe kids become less active when spending more time on screen devices. The majority felt that ideal screen time should be less than 2 hours. However, 69 per cent confirmed that their kids are spending more than 3 hours with screens every day. "Summer vacations mean a break from school, travelling, and extra play time for kids. With plenty of spare time in hand during holidays, 85 per cent of surveyed parents are worried about kids spending excessive screen time during the break," the report said. The survey covered around 750 parents with young kids (3-8 years) across 10 metro and non-metro cities in <keyword id="3658" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="india" source="Orion">India</keyword>. According to the findings, almost 96 per cent of parents are searching for screen-free ideas to keep their kids engaged with learning and fun activities. The survey indicates that 82 per cent of parents are worried about keeping their kids engaged this summer. "Kids are curious to learn new things and want to have fun in the process. With more free time at hand during summer vacations, parents have a big task ahead of themselves to keep their kids engaged. Our survey indicates that parents are keen to limit screen time of kids with screen-free activities that can help them learn new skills and have fun at the same time," said <keyword id="10859748" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="deepender-rana" source="Orion">Deepender Rana</keyword>, executive managing director, the insights division, Kantar. Most of the parents want their kids to pick up skills such as English speaking (50 per cent); good morals and social manners (45 per cent); performing arts like dancing, singing and playing musical instruments (36 per cent); arts and crafts (32 per cent); and physical and outdoor activities (32 per cent), as per the survey. At the interbank foreign exchange, the domestic unit opened at 82.30 against the dollar, then gained further ground to touch 82.19, registering a rise of 19 paise over its previous close. On Thursday, the rupee settled 9 paise higher at 82.38 against the US dollar. Meanwhile, the dollar index, which gauges the greenback's strength against a basket of six currencies, fell 0.23 per cent to 104.53. "With China relaxing its COVID restrictions such as mass testing, lockdowns and quarantine requirements, it is widely feared that cases and deaths would shoot up, causing further widespread economic disruptions. This is something we need to keep a close eye on," <keyword id="14979511" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="ifa-global-research-academy" source="Orion">IFA Global Research Academy</keyword> said in a research note. Brent crude futures, the global oil benchmark, advanced 0.89 per cent to USD 76.83 per barrel. Rupee gains 19 paise to 82.19/$ on dollar weakness and firm equities

In the ever-evolving communication landscape, more than 70 per cent of Indians prefer to message businesses rather than sending an email, calling or visiting their website, a new report said on Friday. Nearly 75 per cent of Indians surveyed said that they are more likely to do business with/purchase from a company that they can contact via messaging. People in <keyword id="3658" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="india" source="Orion">India</keyword> increasingly prefer messaging over other forms of communication, the same way they chat with their friends and family, according to the research by <keyword id="1199021" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="kantar" source="Orion">Kantar</keyword> commissioned by <keyword id="399907" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="meta" source="Orion">Meta</keyword> (formerly <keyword id="6354576" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Facebook" source="Orion">Facebook</keyword>). "Today, customers not only want a quick and easy way to connect with brands, but they also want to engage with a brand to learn more about their product while considering a purchase," said Ravi Garg, Director <keyword id="3807245" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="business-messaging" source="Orion">Business Messaging</keyword> at Meta. The findings of the report showed that 86 per cent of adults message a business at least once a week, which is considerably higher than the global average of 66 per cent. Majority (83 per cent) of the people surveyed expect businesses to deploy quick and easy modes of communication, such as messaging. About 72 per cent of the people surveyed in India said they message with a business more often ever since the start of the pandemic. Interestingly, 75 per cent are more likely to do business with/purchase from a company that they can contact via messaging. Over 7 in 10 Indians now prefer to chat with businesses: Meta report

The Enforcement Directorate (ED) after conducting raids at multiple locations belonging to <keyword id="714947" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="payment-gateways" source="Orion">payment gateways</keyword> i.e <keyword id="6357120" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="paytm" source="Orion">Paytm</keyword> and PayU in connection with a case of Chinese Loan apps, asked Paytm to freeze certain amounts from a few Merchant IDs (MIDs). Sources said the raids were conducted in Mumbai, Delhi, Gurugram, Lucknow and <keyword id="6354925" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="kolkata" source="Orion">Kolkata</keyword>. The ED has not given any official comment on the matter. On September 3, raids were conducted at the premises belonging to online payments gateways including <keyword id="14887233" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="razorpay-pvt-ltd" source="Orion">Razorpay Pvt Ltd</keyword>, Cashfree Payments and <keyword id="14887232" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="paytm-payment-services-ltd" source="Orion">Paytm Payment Services Ltd</keyword>. A Paytm spokesperson said that as part of the ongoing investigations of a specific set of merchants, the ED has sought information regarding such merchants to whom we provide payment processing solutions. "These merchants are independent entities, and none of them are our group entities. We are, and will continue to, fully cooperate with the authorities, and all the directive actions are being duly complied with," said the Paytm spokesperson. The ED has instructed Paytm to freeze certain amounts from the Merchant IDs of a specific set of merchant entities (as mentioned by the ED in its press release). "None of the funds which have been instructed to be frozen belong to Paytm or any of our group companies. As we have mentioned before, ED continues to seek information about certain merchants from various payment service providers, and we have shared the required information," the Paytm spokesperson said. What is the case? The case is based on 18 FIRs registered by the Cyber Crime Police Station, Bengaluru City, against numerous persons for their involvement in extortion and harassment of the public who had availed small loans through the mobile apps being run by those entities. "During enquiries, it had emerged that these entities are operated by Chinese persons. The modus operandi of these entities is that by using forged documents of Indians and making them dummy directors of those entities, they are generating proceeds of crime," the ED said. The ED had said that it has come to its notice that the entities were conducting their suspected business through various Merchant IDs/Accounts held with Payment Gateways/banks. The premises of Razorpay Pvt Ltd, Cashfree Payments, Paytm Payment Services Ltd and entities controlled/operated by Chinese persons were covered in the search operations. "During the search operations, it was noticed that the said entities were generating proceeds of crime through various Merchant IDs/Accounts held with Payment Gateways/banks and they are also not operating from the addresses given on the <keyword id="6355225" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="mca" source="Orion">MCA</keyword> website/registered address and having fake addresses. An amount of Rs 17 crore has been seized in merchant IDs and bank accounts of these Chinese persons-controlled entities," the ED official had said. Meanwhile, a Razorpay spokesperson had said "Some of our merchants were being investigated by law enforcement about a year and a half back. As part of the ongoing investigation, the authorities requested additional information to help with the investigation. Common <keyword id="44308" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="symptoms" source="Orion">symptoms</keyword> of monkeypox virus such as <keyword id="14588405" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="rectal-pain" source="Orion">rectal pain</keyword> and penile swelling (oedema) differ from those described in previous outbreaks and are more prevalent, according to a study. The study, published by The BMJ, identifies important differences in monkeypox symptoms between the current <keyword id="410898" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="outbreak" source="Orion">outbreak</keyword> and previous outbreaks in endemic regions. For the study, researchers from Guys and St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust included 197 men with confirmed monkeypox cases at an infectious disease centre in London between May and July 2022. Of the total, 196 identified as gay, bisexual, or other men who have sex with men. Overall, 20 (10 per cent) of participants were admitted to hospital for the management of symptoms, most commonly rectal pain and penile swelling. The researchers recommend that clinicians consider monkeypox infection in patients presenting with these symptoms. Those with confirmed monkeypox infection with extensive penile lesions or severe rectal pain "should be considered for ongoing review or inpatient management", said Aatish Patel from the Trust. All patients presented with lesions on their skin or mucosal membranes, most commonly on the genitals or in the perianal area. Most (86 per cent) of patients reported systemic illness (affecting the entire body). The most common systemic symptoms were fever (62 per cent), swollen lymph nodes (58 per cent), and muscle aches and pain (32 per cent). And in contrast with existing case reports suggesting that systemic symptoms precede skin lesions, 38 per cent of patients developed systemic symptoms after the onset of mucocutaneous lesions, while 14 per cent presented with lesions without systemic features. A total of 71 patients reported rectal pain, 33 sore throat, and 31 penile oedema, while 27 had oral lesions, 22 had a solitary lesion, and 9 had swollen tonsils. The researchers also noted that solitary lesions and swollen tonsils were not previously known to be typical features of monkeypox infection, and could be mistaken for other conditions. Just over a third (36 per cent) of participants also had HIV infection and 32 per cent of those screened for sexually transmitted infections had a sexually transmitted infection. However, no deaths were reported and no patients required intensive hospital care. "Understanding these findings will have major implications for contact tracing, public health advice, and ongoing infection control and isolation measures," Patel said. The authors also acknowledge some limitations, such as the observational nature of the findings, the potential variability of clinical record keeping, and the fact that the data are limited to a single centre. However, they said these findings confirm the ongoing unprecedented community transmission of monkeypox virus among gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men seen in the UK and many other non-endemic countries.
