He reached the summit at a height of 29,035 feet, at 7.50 am through the Southeast Ridge route. He was accompanied by another sherpa. <br /><br />He started his summit from Camp IV on Tuesday night and reached the summit point on Wednesday morning, said a basement official. <br /><br />The first climbers to reach the summit in 1953— Sir Edmund Hillary and Sherpa Tenzing Norgay also took the same route. <br /><br />According to the tourism department official Mira Acharya, 30 other climbers were supposed to scale the peak by Wednesday and Thursday, as the weather window opens. <br /><br />"The climbers have now been descending to the lower camps safely," Mingma Sherpa told The Himalayan Times.<br /><strong><br />The Journey so far</strong><br />Kami Rita Sherpa wishes to climb the peak two more times, reported Reuters. <br /><br />On May 16, 2018, Kami Rita had made history by scaling Mount Everest, 22 times. He already climbed most of the peaks above 8,000 metres including K2, Cho-oyu, Lhoste and Annapurna. <br /><br />He made his first ascent of the giant peak in 1994 when he was 24 years old. In 2016, he climbed the mountain from China. <br /><br />"I have a goal to climb Everest for 25th time - or maybe more than that," he told Efe news in April before leaving for his expedition.<br /><br />The 2019 Everest climbing season officially kicked off on Tuesday with eight Nepalis climbing guides making it to the peak. <p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image"></div></div></div></p><ul class="summary-list"><li><strong>After 11 people died on <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/category/mount-everest" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Mount Everest</a> this month, Nepal is considering <a href="https://www.insider.com/nepal-may-require-mountaineering-proof-for-everest-permits-2019-5" target="_blank" rel="noopener">changing the rules</a> that regulate who can climb up to the summit. </strong></li><li><strong>Some climbers are criticizing Everest's crowds, saying people attempting to summit <a href="https://www.insider.com/climbers-react-crowds-mount-everest-2019-5" target="_blank" rel="noopener">lack mountaineering experience</a> that should be required.</strong></li><li><strong>But veteran Everest climber Kami Rita Sherpa - who holds the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/everest-record-holder-washes-dishes-at-whole-foods-2018-7" target="_blank" rel="noopener">world record for Everest summits</a> with 24 to his name - said "traffic jam" conditions are not the real issue on Everest and aren't new. </strong></li><li><strong>Instead, he said, all Everest climbers should focus on making sure they have enough energy to get back down the mountain.</strong></li><li><a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/?hprecirc-bullet">Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories</a>.</li></ul><p>Kami Rita Sherpa knows Mount Everest better than anyone else: He's summited the world's tallest peak 24 times,  more than any person in history.</p><p>This year, Sherpa reached the top of the 29,029-foot-high mountain - which Nepalese locals like him know as "<a href="https://whc.unesco.org/en/list/120" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Sagarmatha</a>" - twice in one week,<span> on May 15 and 21.</span></p><p><span>"I'm good now," he told Business Insider eight days later from Kathmandu, where he was relaxing with his daughter and son.</span></p><p><span><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image"></div></div></div></span></p><p><span>Sherpa's accomplishment coincided with a month in which <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/everest-death-toll-week-passes-2018-record-overcrowding-2019-5" target="_blank" rel="noopener">11 hikers died</a> on Everest - more than double last year's death toll - making it the most fatal spring the mountain has seen in years.</span></p><p><span>Some expedition companies and experts have blamed the deaths on growing crowds and inexperienced, slow climbers, both of which force people to spend more time in the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/mount-everest-death-zone-what-happens-to-body-2019-5" target="_blank" rel="noopener">mountain's "death zone."</a> A handful of climbers and <a href="https://www.insider.com/nepal-may-require-mountaineering-proof-for-everest-permits-2019-5" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Nepalese lawmakers</a> are calling for an overhaul of the climbing rules to require more proof of experience. </span></p><p><span>One Indian climber who lost two of her climbing-mates this year told the <a href="https://www.apnews.com/a67ea6abe6ae4cdd9c22ce5b71f8c819" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Associated Press</a> that Nepal should bring the "inexperienced" Everest tourists off the mountain.</span></p><p>But Sherpa sees the problem differently.</p><p>"There's a lot of news writing that in traffic jams, people are dying," Sherpa said. "That is not true!"</p><p><span>He said cramped conditions are not to blame for the 11 deaths; i</span>nstead, he said, some Everest climbers inadvertently push their bodies past their limits.</p><h2><span>Everest 'traffic jams' are not new</span></h2><p><span>A record <a href="https://trade.welcomenepal.com/nepal-stands-with-global-climbing-community-in-commitment-to-safe-ascent-of-everest/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">number of tourists - 381 - signed up</a> for the $11,000 <a href="https://twitter.com/hello_dot_np/status/1124303720018108416" target="_blank" rel="noopener">permits to summit Everest</a> from the Nepal side of the mountain this year (that's the easier and more popular route).</span></p><p><span>But crowded conditions on Everest are a fairly routine part of the climb: When the mountain warms in April and May, there are often just a few good windows of hiking weather. Everybody wants to summit during those few critical days.</span></p><p><span>"It is not this year only," Sherpa said. "Every year there's some [days] like that." </span></p><p><span><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image"></div></div></div></span></p><p><span>Nepali climber Karma Tenzing, who said he was on the mountain the same day Sherpa made his first summit this year, reiterated the same idea.</span></p><p>"Everest unfairly trashed via viral image of 'traffic jam' on May 22, 2019," he <a href="https://twitter.com/karma10zing/status/1133208690037645312" target="_blank" rel="noopener">said on Twitter</a>. "Below are REAL photos of my climb to summit on May 15. Devoid of jams &amp; I spent an hour at summit. With only a 3-4 day weather window &amp; ~300 Everest summiteers annually, jams will exist."</p><p><span>Filmmaker Jennifer Peedom, who has climbed the mountain four times, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/everest-photos-show-reality-of-climb-2018-5" target="_blank" rel="noopener">described a similar situation to Business Insider last year</a>.</span></p><p><span>"There's people everywhere," Peedom said. "You're in this incredibly remote place and yet you're just lining up."</span></p><p>Sherpa said problems arise not from those lines, but when people accidentally push past what their body can support. Some <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/mount-everest-summit-climbing-tips-exercise-psychologist-2019-5" target="_blank" rel="noopener">research suggests</a> that Everest climbers can develop a kind of "summit fever," racing to the top to prove they can, even when their bodies are showing signs of giving out.<span></span></p><p><span>"At that altitude, it takes everything to put one foot in front of the other," Everest climber and exercise psychologist Shaunna Burke <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/mount-everest-summit-climbing-tips-exercise-psychologist-2019-5" target="_blank" rel="noopener">recently told Business Insider</a>. "If you haven't judged how much gas you have left in the tank, then you can't make it down. That's why some climbers sit down and don't get back up."</span></p><p>Sherpa echoed this. </p><p>"When returning, their body is out of energy, and many people die due to this cause," he said. </p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image"></div></div></div></p><p><span>Indeed, the <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2019/05/29/world/asia/everest-deaths.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">New York Times</a> reported that 10</span><span> of the 11 climbers who died on Everest this month - Seamus Lawless, Ravi Thakar, Donald Cash, Anjali Kulkarni, Nihal Bagwan, Kalpana Das, Ernst Landgraf, Dhruba Bista, Robin Fisher, and Christopher Kulish - had already reached the apex. They</span> were on their way down when they either fell, collapsed, died of exhaustion or illness, stopped to rest and mysteriously expired, or went to sleep and never woke.</p><p>The climber who died before reaching the summit this year was Kevin Hynes. His family told <a href="https://www.rte.ie/news/world/2019/0524/1051500-everest-nepal/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Irish state media RTE</a> that Hynes turned back because he felt ill. (He'd previously summited Everest last year.)</p><h2>19 people were killed on Everest in 2015, many of them sherpas</h2><p>The Everest fatalities this year are a tragic reminder that regardless of experience or preparation, death is common on the mountain. More than 300 people have lost their lives there, about a <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/mount-everest-misconceptions-about-climbing-2019-5" target="_blank" rel="noopener">4% death rate</a>. The first man who tried to reach the top, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/everest-doctor-diagnosed-his-own-lung-problem-2018-9" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Englishman Geroge Malloy</a>, died on the mountain in 1923; three decades passed before sherpa Tensing Norgay and Sir Edmond Hillary became the first to summit Everest in 1953. </p><p>Although Sherpas serve as guides, climbing the mountain is extremely dangerous for them, too. <span>Pasang Lhamu Sherpa, </span><a href="http://ecs.com.np/features/pasang-lhamu-sherpa-inspiring-the-next-generation-of-nepali" target="_blank" rel="noopener">the first Nepali woman</a> to attempt Everest, died on her way down from the summit in 1993. In one particularly fatal moment in 2014, <a href="https://www.outsideonline.com/1924596/everests-darkest-year" target="_blank" rel="noopener">16 sherpas died</a> when an avalanche struck as they were setting up for spring climbers. The event inspired a strike that spring. The next year, at least <a href="http://www.nepalmountaineering.org/newspage-225-Name%20List%20of%2015%20identified%20dead%20body%20among%2019%20dead%20body%20found%20at%20Mt.%20Everest" target="_blank" rel="noopener">19 climbers died when an avalanche struck base camp</a>; 10 of those victims were sherpas.</p><p>Sherpa said climbing on Everest is "a little bit" scary, even for a veteran like him. He gets especially nervous at the rickety and unpredictable Khumbu Icefall, located near South Base Camp in Nepal.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image"></div></div></div></p><p><a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/everest-record-holder-washes-dishes-at-whole-foods-2018-7" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Sherpas can make about $5,000 a season</a>, and may earn several times that amount, depending on their experience level. Sherpa said he gets "paid a little higher" than other guides because of his summit record. There's often a bonus for sherpas who help their clients reach the top. </p><p>Sherpa said generally the more you pay, the more experienced your Everest guide will be. But some tour operators have been accused of dangerous cost-cutting strategies. </p><p><span>"You see agencies hiring inexperienced people as guides who cannot offer the right guidance to their clients when they have a situation like this," Tshering Pande Bhote, vice president of Nepal National Mountain Guides Association, told <a href="https://www.bbc.com/news/world-asia-48423738" target="_blank" rel="noopener">the BBC</a>. </span></p><h2><span>'I'm going back next year'</span></h2><p><span>Sherpa said his climbing days on Everest are numbered, but he's not done yet.</span></p><p><span>"I'm going back next year," he said, adding that the trek will be </span><span>a kind of silver jubilee celebration: a 25th summit for his 50th year. </span></p><p><span>"After 25, I'm going to quit," he said. A Mount Everest record-holder says summit 'traffic jams' aren't the problem - it's the trek down that kills people

That's more summits of the world's highest peak than any other woman, dead or alive.</p><p>She's not done yet - the 44-year-old mountain climber is <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/a-whole-foods-employee-is-preparing-to-climb-mount-everest-again-2018-4">gearing up for climb number 10</a> in 2019.</p><p>When not on the mountain, Sherpa doesn't go to the gym or endure extreme workouts to stay fit. Instead, she clocks 40 hours a week hauling trash and washing dishes at a Whole Foods in West Hartford, Connecticut. The $11.50/hour job pays the bills and helps Sherpa support her two daughters.</p><p>Come April, Sherpa will leave the girls, ages 11 and 16, and travel back to her home mountain. After growing up in the shadow of the 29,029-foot-tall peak, the effort doesn't seem optional to her.</p><p>"I feel I'm addicted, in my body," Sherpa told Business Insider, explaining that when she doesn't climb, she feels sick. "I like to go again and again."</p><h2>Climbing Everest is a team sport, and sherpas often risk their lives leading the way </h2><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Lhakpa Sherpa</span></p><p class="caption">Lhakpa Sherpa at work in West Hartford, Connecticut.</p></div><p></p></div></div>Sherpa grew up gazing at the mountains in Nepal. One of 10 siblings, she could see Everest from her family's yak house. As a kid, nature was often her only teacher. Sherpa never received a formal education, but did a lot of hiking in the hills. Everest always loomed in the distance. </p><p>At 15, Sherpa started hauling gear on mountains in the Himalayas, carrying heavy loads between camps in high-up spots, including on the third-highest mountain in the world, <span>Kanchenjunga. She learned the trade from her father, and would usually hike for about seven hours a day, six days a week</span>. She first summited Everest when she was 27.</p><p>Sherpas have been an integral part of nearly every successful Everest summit, ever since Sir Edmond Hillary became one of the first two people to officially make it to the top with his climbing partner Tensing Norgay in 1953. </p><p>The word sherpa means "easterner" and refers to the place sherpas originally came from - eastern Tibet - though it often functions as a last name, as well as the term for Everest guides. </p><p>Some <a href="https://www.britannica.com/topic/Sherpa-people">150,000</a> sherpas live in the mountains of Nepal, India, and Tibet. Of course, not all ethnic sherpas are mountain climbers, and not all sherpa guides hail from the ethnic group (Norgay didn't). It was not a common practice for sherpas to hike to the top of the world's highest peaks - a landscape they considered the <a href="https://www.britannica.com/topic/Sherpa-people">home of the Gods</a> - until Westerners started paying sherpas to help them reach the summits in the 1900s.</p><p>On Everest these days, sherpas guide the way, carry heavy packs, cook meals, and make sure their team is strong enough to make it to the top. The men's record holder for Everest climbs is Kami Rita Sherpa, who's done the trek 22 times.</p><p>Sherpas endure tough conditions on their climbs. In 2014, tragedy struck when <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/everest-photos-show-reality-of-climb-2018-5">16 sherpas were swept away by an avalanche</a> on the mountain as they hauled gear to help paying customers make it to the peak. That led to a sherpa strike on Everest for the rest of that season, as other porters mourned their dead and lobbied for better pay. At least 94 Sherpas have died climbing Everest, <a href="https://www.npr.org/sections/parallels/2018/04/14/599417489/one-third-of-everest-deaths-are-sherpa-climbers">according to NPR,</a> accounting for roughly a third of all deaths on the mountain. </p><p>When climbing, Sherpa said she carries out special summiting rituals to stay safe.</p><p>"<span>I talk with the mountain," she said, "very quiet." </span></p><p><span>She also meditates, envisioning the successful climb and telling the mountain not to kill her.  </span></p><p><span>"I have children waiting for me," she tells the peak, referring to her two daughters and 23-year-old son. "I need to go back." </span></p><p>Sherpa made $5,000 on this year's two-month expedition.</p><h2>Preparing for a successful climb</h2><p><span>Sherpa doesn't do much extra training in Connecticut, aside from hauling the trash at work. But she believes strong women like her make better climbers than men, since they tend to be more careful and deliberate.</span></p><p><span>"Men only wanna go up, you know?" she said.</span></p><p>Sherpa said she can tell people are ready to summit after they've climbed some smaller peaks first, since one of the best ways to acclimate to Everest is in fits and starts. That involves hiking to higher altitudes until you start to feel sick with a headache or nausea (maybe even vomiting), then climbing back down.</p><p>Such incremental work helps climbers prepare for the dangerous "dead zone" above 8,000 meters (~26,250 feet). There, some oxygen-starved hikers are <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/high-altitude-climbers-psychosis-hallucinations-2018-1">known to get loopy</a>, shedding clothes in the freezing conditions or talking to imaginary companions. Climbers sometimes pass frozen dead bodies, some with hair fluttering in the wind.</p><p>Groups hike this part of the mountain under the cover of night because the treacherous walk back down is safer in the light of day, and the trek's too long to be in the sun round-trip. Sherpa said her groups usually start their seven-hour journeys around 10 p.m. to reach the summit safely. They can only spend about 10 to 20 minutes there before embarking on the 12-hour hike back to base camp. It's a change from the burgers, burritos, and soda Sherpa subsists on in Connecticut, but the garlic and ginger help with altitude sickness and headaches, and the broth keeps bodies warm. </p><h2>The next trek</h2><p>For her past climbs, Sherpa has worked for her brother Mingma's company, which usually picks a Tibetan route up Everest. But she recently started her own venture, <a href="http://cloudscapeclimbing.com/">Cloudscape Climbing</a>, and plans to head to Kathmandu with the inaugural crew in April. Sherpa aims to take her group to the summit from the Nepal side of the mountain.</p><p>Sherpa said her kids don't have any plans to follow in her footsteps on Everest. She's proud of the "A pluses" and "B pluses" they're getting at school, she said, and they're helping her improve her own reading and writing. But when her daughters aren't studying, Sherpa still encourages them get out of the house.</p><p><span>"Go outside!
