The trailer of the much-anticipated sequel to Ponniyin Selvan (PS-1) was released here late on Wednesday, as expectations have grown high about the Mani Ratnam-helmed ensemble. With the director dishing out a gripping first part of author Kalki's Tamil work by the same name that was well-received by film buffs, the sequel is expected to be a riveting finale to a plot having all the ingredients for a blockbuster. At a jam-packed Jawaharlal Nehru Indoor Stadium here, the PS-2 trailer and audio were released, even as PS-1 ended with news of Arunmozhi Varman's death and a mysterious character shown in the climax to up the suspense quotient. As a propreitorship firm is not separate from the owner, by definition. So what does the future look like for Haasan? Cash accrual is expected at ₹7 crore to ₹8 crore in the 'medium term' (usually means longer than a year), according to Crisil. However, more than half of that amount will be needed to repay debt before March 2020. In November 2019, <a href="https://www.republicworld.com/entertainment-news/bollywood-news/kamalhaasantheestimatednetworthofthechachi420actor.html" data-type="tilCustomLink" target="_blank">Haasan's net worth was estimated </a>at $100 million (₹700 crore). But according to Crisil's latest report, his debt is 1.64 times his net worth. Forbes, while ranking him at 56 in the list of India's richest celebrities, estimated his earnings for 2019 at ₹34 crore. By that metric, Haasan's net worth will be about ₹15 crore, assuming there are no loans other than one mentioned in the report. Attempts to reach out to Crisil for clarification on the disparity failed. The story will be updated with Crisil's response, if any. The good news is that he makes 12 times more money every year than what is required to cover the interest. On the other hand, "volatility in profitability and revenue, inherent in the film industry, will continue to impact the firm, since the income is based on the ongoing films and other programmes," according to Crisil. While Shah Rukh Khan-starrer <keyword id="12756474" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="pathaan" source="Orion">Pathaan</keyword> may have broken box office records on its way to a blockbuster status, a Malayalam film with a tenth of the former’s collections is also a superhit now – all thanks to the dynamics of the OTT (over-the-top) ecosystem, says an ace Malayalam film director. The advent of a host of OTT platforms such as Netflix, Amazon Prime, Disney+Hotstar etc and the pandemic-induced changes in the way cinema is consumed has brought on a fundamental change in the business of cinema, says Unnikrishan Bhaskaran, in an exclusive conversation with Business Insider India. As a writer-director, Unnikrishnan has been a part of the industry for over two decades and has over ten films under his belt. He debuted in the industry as a writer with the drama Jalamarmaram (1999) - that won him his first Kerala State Film Award for Best Screenplay. He ventured into direction with Smart City in 2006 and went on to direct films like Madampi (2008), Pramani (2010), Grandmaster (2012), and the latest, Aaraattu (2022) and Christopher (2023), among others. While acknowledging that the collections of Pathaan are “mind-boggling” and no other film has succeeded in bringing people to theatres in large numbers after the pandemic, Unnikrishnan insists the way to declare a film a hit or flop has changed. Since its release on January 25, 2023, Pathaan has <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/entertainment/news/indian-films-that-grossed-1000-crore-worldwide/slidelist/98144028.cms">grossed </a>over ₹1,000 crore in worldwide collections - only the fifth Indian film to do so in cinematic history. “In Malayalam, when you say a film is a superhit, it usually collects over ₹10-₹12 crore. But now if your film collects ₹5-₹6 crore from theatrical runs, you should regard it as a hit because there’s another vertical (OTT) or source of revenue that compensates for the lack of theatre revenue,” says Unnikrishnan . His latest film, the vigilante crime-drama Christopher starring Mammootty released on February 9 in theatres and opened to positive reviews - <a href="https://www.boxofficebusiness.in/2023/02/christopher-day-1-box-office-collection-worldwide.html">reportedly </a>raking in ₹11 crore in worldwide collections in 10 days of its release. <cmsannotation type="cmsannotation" annotationid="Malayalam cinema: quality over quantity" comment="subhead2" text="Malayalam cinema: quality over quantity">Malayalam cinema: quality over quantity</cmsannotation> According to Unnikrishnan, Malayalam cinema has high-quality content that is better than most other languages, but it’s a small industry, lacking the strength to compete with bigger industries like Tamil or Telugu language cinema. “If you take commercial figures as a yardstick, we’re (Malayalam cinema) far behind - because our films only release on 200-300 screens whereas a Vijay (a Tamil star), Rajni (Rajnikant), or Kamal Haasan film releases in over 1,000 screens. Volume-wise it can’t be compared to other languages but if you take content quality as a benchmark, we’re much much ahead,” shared Unnikrishnan. Indeed, from thrillers like the Drishyam series to feminist dramas like The Great Indian Kitchen and family dramas like Kumbalangi Nights, Malayalam cinema has long been pushing the bar with original and engaging content. Unnikrishnan believes that only “extra special” films can now draw the crowds to theatres – because the rise of OTT during the pandemic led to the end of “average-run” movies. Average-run movies are typically movies that enjoy a limited run in theatres but the collections are not low enough for them to be categorised as box-office flops. “There’s no middle path now - either you watch in theatres, or when it comes to OTT. There was something called an average-run film before Covid - that’s no longer there. The majority of the audience stays away from theatres because it’s a habitual thing - they’re so used to watching it in the cosy atmosphere of their homes,” remarks Unnikrishnan, who has dabbled in both films and the television industry. The lecturer-turned-filmmaker has written and directed three award-winning films back to back – the 2003 telefilm Antharangal, the 2004 Asianet television drama Black and White and the 2005 film Annum Mazhayayirunnu. He also directed the crime drama Villain (2017)- the country's first movie entirely shot in 8K quality. For instance, Christopher is dubbed into Tamil and Hindi. (Now) an idea should be so fascinating that you take it up and really rework it to give a totally different film - that’s what they did with Lucifer when they remade it in Telugu,” added Unnikrishnan. Lucifer, released in 2019, is a Malayalam crime thriller and the highest-grossing Malayalam film ever - <a href="https://www.hindustantimes.com/regional-movies/mohanlal-s-lucifer-storms-into-rs-200-crore-club-first-for-malayalam-cinema/story-vTm7JXaAdz0FWFTllE4n2I.html">earning over ₹200 crore</a>. And they (OTT) also had to constantly give you content. So people had the illusion that good cinema finally found its platform,” said Unnikrishnan. He believes that once the theatres opened after the pandemic, OTT platforms predictably changed their policy - with films releasing in theatres before coming on to OTT. “During the pandemic, many brilliant films premiered on OTT and everyone took notice of it. For instance, Drishyam 1 was a huge theatrical success but its sequel had an equally brilliant run when it (was) released on OTT. A recipient of the country's second highest civilian honour, Padma Vibhushan, Maharaj ji was also a lifelong Kathak guru as well as a talented Hindustani classical singer and percussionist. He will be remembered by cinema buffs for the two period dance sequences in <keyword id="14969" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="satyajit-ray" source="Orion">Satyajit Ray</keyword>'s historical drama 'Shatranj Ke Khiladi' (for which he sang as well) and for the 'Kaahe Chhed Mohe' track picturised on Madhuri Dixit in the 2002 version of 'Devdas'. Maharaj ji won the National Award for choreographing 'Unnai Kaanadhu Naan' in the Kamal Haasan multi-lingual megahit 'Vishwaroopam' and the Filmfare Awards for the Bajirao Mastani number 'Mohe Rang Do Laal'. Adnan Sami, one of the first artistes to pay his tributes to the doyen of Kathak, said in a tweet: "Extremely saddened by the news about the passing away of Legendary Kathak Dancer <keyword id="12966839" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="pandit-birju" source="Orion">Pandit Birju</keyword> Maharaj ji. We have lost an unparalleled institution in the field of the performing arts. He has influenced many generations through his genius. May he rest in peace." He popularised the Lucknow gharana of Kathak dance form around the world. ... His passing away is a monumental loss to the world of performing arts." By Gurdip Singh Singapore, May 5 () Singapore reported 632 new COVID-19 cases on Tuesday, mostly foreign workers living in packed dormitories, taking the total number of infections in the country to 19,410. The Health Ministry said of the new cases nine were Singapore citizens or permanent residents (foreigners). "We are still working through the details of the cases and further updates will be shared," the ministry said. The novel coronavirus has so far claimed 18 lives in the country. The Singapore government is ramping up testing capacity with a view to starting nationwide COVID-19 testing, National Development Minister Lawrence Wong told Parliament. Minister for Communications and Information S Iswaran on Tuesday addressed the concerns of the migrant workers living in dormitories, who have been subject to stringent restrictions and active testing. Speaking in Tamil for workers from India, Iswaran explained the need to test them and their co-workers. The Indian-origin Singapore minister said the government has "undertaken numerous efforts to enhance the quality of food and facilities" within the dormitories. The video was dubbed in Bengali and forwarded to Bangladeshi workers via WhatsApp. "If tested positive, we will provide (your friends) with the necessary medical care fully paid by the government. We will provide you with the necessary quality medical care as we do for Singaporeans. This is our promise," said Iswaran. As of Monday, more than 5 per cent, or 16,383, of the 323,000 migrant workers living in dormitories have tested positive for the virus, including a large number of Indians. Many workers remain quarantined in their rooms, while the stay-home notice period for work permit and S Pass holders in the construction sector has been extended by another two weeks to May 18. Iswaran said he had approached four Indian stars to have them send their wishes and encouragement to the workers. The celebrities include actor Rajinikanth and former cricketer Sachin Tendulkar. Composer A R Rahman and actor Kamal Haasan have already conveyed their good wishes. Haasan said: "When we look after ourselves, don't forget that it is also like we are looking after the government. The government is not a separate entity from us, we are all part of the same ecosystem." Rahman urged the workers, like their countrymen in India, to follow the government's announcements and practise safe distancing. "It is in your hands for you all to be careful and stay safe," said the Oscar winning musician. Minister Iswaran said the workers should visit official sources such as gov.sg for correct information and not worry themselves with fake news. He said services in the dorms have been enhanced to make sure workers can communicate with their families, get necessary information from the Internet, and watch their favourite films, reported The Straits Times on Tuesday. Over the weekend, the government announced that some of the tough restrictions put in place during Singapore's circuit breaker period will continue till June 1. They were to be eased on Monday. For the lifting of COVID-19 "circuit breaker" measures to reopen businesses locally, the daily number of local community cases should fall to zero or single digits over a sustained period of time as well as lower the infection levels in foreign worker dormitories, Health Minister Gan Kim Yong had told the Parliament earlier.
