"Made by Maddie" was accused of plagiarizing the Oscar-winning short film "Hair Love" after the <keyword id="7015801" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Nick-Jr-">Nick Jr.</keyword> show's trailer aired, and fans pointed out similarities between the two works.</p><p>In a statement obtained by <a href="https://deadline.com/2020/09/made-by-maddie-pulled-nickelodeon-hair-love-controversy-1234571148/">Deadline</a>, Nickelodeon said: "'Made by Maddie' is a show we acquired several years ago from Silvergate Media, a renowned production company we have previously worked with on other series. Cherry's short film, which won the Academy Award for best animated short at this year's <keyword id="6376611" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="oscars">Oscars</keyword>.</p><p>"Made in Maddie" follows a little girl who uses her fashion sense to solve problems, while "Hair Love" follows a father doing his daughter's hair for the first time. However, both works feature a mother with natural hair, a father with dreadlocks, and a pet kitten. Both little girls also wear pink headbands, while some fans believed that even the soft pink and green color palette sported by "Made by Maddie" was a direct copy of the palette of "Hair Love."</p><p>However, the production company behind "Made by Maddie," Silvergate Media insisted that they have been working on the show since 2015.</p><p>"Silvergate Media has been working on the series for the last five years and throughout the production has taken steps to ensure a diverse production team and an appropriate voice cast lending their expertise and talent," Waheed, the CEO of Silvergate Media, told <a href="https://ew.com/tv/made-by-maddie-producers-deny-copying-hair-love/?utm_campaign=entertainmentweekly_entertainmentweekly&amp;utm_content=new&amp;utm_medium=social&amp;utm_source=twitter.com&amp;utm_term=5f50308e44976d000159ab8944976d000159ab89">Entertainment Weekly</a>. Cherry and <em>Hair Love</em>, and our hope is that when people watch our show, they will see it is its own story with its own adventures."</p><p>The Kickstarter campaign that launched "Hair Love" to success began in July 2017, although "Made by Maddie" was officially ordered as a series in 2018. A year after that, however, "Hair Love" debuted in cinemas in August 2019. 'Made by Maddie' has been pulled by Nickelodeon after people accused it of plagiarizing 'Hair Love'

<ul class="summary-list"><li><strong><a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/category/quentin-tarantino">Quentin Tarantino's</a> visual references to other movies have become his trademark.</strong></li><li><strong>Despite what most people think, they aren't homages. In fact, Tarantino once stated in an interview that he "steals from every single movie ever made."</strong></li><li><strong>Tarantino's unique style is actually an element known as 'pastiche' in postmodern cinema</strong></li><li><strong>Tarantino's understanding of the source material and his unique vision and writing are what makes these 'pastiche' so great.</strong></li></ul><p><em>Following is a transcript of the video. </em></p><p>You don't have to be a movie buff. Maybe you don't even like movies that much. But everyone has heard of the name Quentin Tarantino. He is, without a doubt, one of the most celebrated directors of our time, with each of his eight iconic works making a profound impact on the history of cinema and inspiring generations of filmmakers with a vastly new style and approach to filmmaking that can only be described as Tarantinoesque, which, by the way, is now an official entry in the Oxford English Dictionary. So, what makes the films of Quentin Tarantino so special? Many often cite his razor-sharp dialogue. The often graphic, yet stylized, violence. Or his use of nonlinear narrative structure. But what truly sets him apart from every other filmmaker is the way in which he steals from other movies. And that's not just a figure of speech.</p><p>In a 1994 interview with Empire magazine, Tarantino said, "I steal from every single movie ever made." Tarantino's visual references to movies have become his trademark. Some of these references are merely hinted at. While others are almost identical replications. For this reason, he's been the center of controversy for many years. For example, in 1997, his debut film, "Reservoir Dogs," was under heavy scrutiny after a critic accused Tarantino of plagiarizing the 1987 Hong Kong crime film "City on Fire." The final 20 minutes of "City on Fire" is essentially identical to the plot of "Reservoir Dogs," and there are shots and moments scattered throughout that directly resemble each other. Including this famous Mexican-standoff sequence. But it's not just in this film. Almost all of Tarantino's eight films have a main source of inspiration. For "Jackie Brown," it was the 1974 film "Foxy Brown." For "Kill Bill," the 1973 Japanese film "Lady Snowblood." And his "Inglourious Basterds" is, in a lot of ways, similar to the 1967 war film "The Dirty Dozen." And on top of that, each film has more visual references to at least another dozen movies. Many consider these similarities homages, a practice as long as the history of cinema itself, a way for Tarantino to pay respect to the movies he loves. But Tarantino explicitly denies this. In the same interview, he goes on to say, "Great artists steal. They don't do homages." It's a quote that closely resembles words attributed to another famous artist: Pablo Picasso, who's often quoted as having said, "Good artists copy, and great artists steal."</p><p>To understand why and how Tarantino steals, it's important to understand his background. Tarantino's career in film didn't start in a classroom or even a movie set, but a video store, where he worked as a clerk and gained a reputation for his almost encyclopedic knowledge of cinema. In other words, Tarantino was never taught how to make a film. Instead, he learned how to make films by watching them, which makes it natural that imitation became his main source of inspiration and style. In fact, if you take a look at most of Tarantino's screenplays, they begin with a list of filmmakers whom the stories were inspired by and dedicated to. I think the reason why Tarantino is so proud to admit that he is stealing is because he accomplishes something with it that no other filmmaker is quite capable of: creating something new. And as paradoxical as it may sound, Tarantino's movies have a sense of originality to them, despite their many sources of inspiration. This is why Tarantino is often hailed as one of the quintessential filmmakers of postmodernism.</p><p>Postmodernism in film describes an era when filmmakers began questioning the ways in which mainstream movies are made and told and began making movies that went directly against it. One of the central tenets of postmodernism is the idea that nothing is new in art; everything is recycled and reused over and over again. "Reservoir Dogs" might have stolen the Mexican standoff from "City on Fire," but "City on Fire" also stole it from the 1966 film "The Good, the Bad and the Ugly." And "Pulp Fiction" is no exception; it's chock-full of references to classical movies, especially movies from the French New Wave movement, one of the most influential movements in the history of cinema, in which young filmmakers also tried to challenge the traditional method of filmmaking. Its famous dancing sequence was inspired by this sequence from the 1964 film "Band of Outsiders." And the choreography closely resembles this scene from the 1963 film "8 1/2." But that's not the only source it steals from. John Travolta's dance was inspired by this scene from 1966 adaptation of "Batman," while Uma Thurman's dancing resembles that of a cat in the 1970 animated film "The Aristocats." And throughout the rest of the film as well. The mysterious suitcase that carries the plot of the film is a replication from the 1955 American film "Kiss Me Deadly." And, of course, this scene was inspired by Alfred Hitchcock's "Psycho." What makes Tarantino so special is that he never steals from one source. He rather steals from multiple sources spanning decades and then stitches them together to create something new. It's a technique known as pastiche, a vital element in postmodernism. Most people are more familiar with this technique through another medium: music, and especially in the hip-hop genre, where artists use sampling to take part of an existing song to create something new.  And just like Tarantino, it's been the subject of controversy many times.</p><p>Tarantino's pastiche works so well because of two reasons. One is his understanding of the subject he's stealing from. More often than not, homages in movies are a shallow and vain attempt at imitating an iconic moment, and they rarely serve a purpose. But Tarantino's references are often seamless and easy to miss because they enhance the scenes and the genre he experiments with. And if you take a look at Tarantino's career, each of his eight films is a tribute to a specific genre and movement in cinema. "Reservoir Dogs" is a pastiche of the gritty Hong Kong crime films, and "Pulp Fiction" is based on the unconventional French New Wave movement. "Jackie Brown" basis itself off the '70s' controversial blaxploitation films, while "Kill Bill" is reminiscent of the classical Japanese samurai and Chinese kung fu movies. "Death Proof" pays tribute to low-budget exploitation movies, while "Inglourious Basterds" references World War II cinema. And his two most recent films, "Django Unchained" and "The Hateful Eight," are modern takes of the Italian spaghetti Westerns. Tarantino seamlessly blends all these genres and inspirations through his unique vision and writing. This is where his razor-sharp dialogue comes in.</p><p>It's not an exaggeration to say that Tarantino's films are essentially re-adaptations of classical films and genres that take place in a world of Tarantino, where violence, injustice, sex, and satirical cynicism flourish. Quentin Tarantino perhaps knows better than anyone that you don't have to look far for inspiration. Most of the time, it might be somewhere close and familiar to us. My guess is that, for Tarantino, it's in the aisles of VHS tapes that he grew up watching as a child. Tarantino proudly plays the role of a masterful thief of cinema. And as long as he continues to make a masterpiece out of them, it's the kind of thievery I'd be more than happy to accept.</p>

How Quentin Tarantino steals from other movies

<p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Marvel</span></p></div><p></p></div></div></p><ul><li><strong>"Thor: Ragnarok" was one of the best and most exciting movies of 2017, but it was completely overlooked by the Oscars.</strong></li><li><strong>It reinvented what an action comedy and blockbuster movie can be.</strong></li><li><strong>It's truly unique story and filmmaking from director Taika Waititi deserved a nomination in the directing category, adapted screenplay, visual effects, and production design.</strong></li></ul><p>"Thor: Ragnarok" is no "Call Me by Your Name." But it's a fair comparison.</p><p>Like a majority of the films recognized at the 2018 Oscars, "Ragnarok" is original in its exciting tone and style, proving that blockbuster movies, even those in the Marvel Cinematic universe, can be fairly compared to more artistic indie films.</p><p>Of all the movies that came out in 2017, it's probably the most striking, even compared to Guillermo del Toro's "The Shape of Water" (which was <a href="https://www.npr.org/sections/thetwo-way/2018/02/22/587902480/shape-of-water-creators-sued-over-plagiarism-claims-as-oscars-approach">recently accused</a> of plagiarism). </p><p>"Thor: Ragnarok" is a masterpiece of action and comedy filmmaking, and essentially created its own genre. Like "Wonder Woman" and best adapted screenplay nominee "Logan," it offers a fresh take on an overdone, often dull genre that will without a doubt pave the way for movies and filmmakers of the future. </p><p>With its unique style from director Taika Waititi, who has a very bright future and should have been nominated in the directing category, "Ragnarok" is a hopeful example of what modern filmmaking can be. Alongside <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/bill-ackman-turns-focus-mit-president-sally-kornbluth-harvard-2024-1">MIT president Sally Kornbluth</a>, the trio of leaders avoided questions about whether calling for the genocide of Jews violated their universities' rules on bullying and harassment.</p><p>"It can be, depending on the context," Gay answered.</p><p>Gay's six-month run as Harvard's president was also <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/harvard-says-president-claudine-gay-did-not-violate-plagiarism-rules-2023-12">plagued with multiple accusations</a> of plagiarism in her <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/harvard-president-plagiarism-concerns-attribution-antisemitism-claudine-gay-university-2023-12">academic work</a>. While industry giants like Netflix produce increasingly viral original content in order to satiate a ravenous audience, everyone else is trying to get in the game too: Disney launched Disney Plus with both old and <a href="https://www.insider.com/new-shows-disney-plus">new programming</a> in late 2019; Apple brought on big names to <a href="https://www.insider.com/why-apple-tv-plus-will-struggle-in-the-streaming-war-2019-10">launch original titles on Apple TV Plus</a>; HBO Max got <a href="https://www.insider.com/spirited-away-other-studio-ghibli-films-head-to-hbo-max-2019-10">the Studio Ghibli catalog</a>, and also the "Friends" reunion special, <a href="https://www.insider.com/how-to-attend-friends-reunion-special-taping-contest-2020-4">whenever that happens</a>. </p><p>And then there's Quibi.</p><p>The mobile-focused black sheep of the bunch, Quibi is designed to provide content to fill in the odd spaces of your day-to-day, which would be very fun and cool if it didn't launch during the middle of a pandemic that has all but erased the in-between moments Quibi is supposed to target. Its name is a portmanteau of "quick" and "bites;" each Quibi episode is roughly seven to ten minus long. Founded by Disney and DreamWorks veteran Jeffrey Katzenberg, Quibi <a href="https://variety.com/2020/digital/news/quibi-750-million-funding-investment-mobile-video-1203523586/">raised nearly $2 billion in funding</a> prior to its launch on April 6. </p><p>Quibi generated plenty of buzz prior to its launch with tales of its significant funding and unique format, and earned <a href="https://www.theverge.com/2020/4/13/21219087/quibi-downloads-launch-week-tv-casting-numbers-users">1.7 million downloads within its first week</a> (as a comparison, Disney Plus had <a href="https://www.insider.com/disney-plus-has-10-million-sign-ups-since-launch-subscribers-2019-11">over 10 million subscribers on its first day</a>). However, there's been one space of digital chatter typically present around any kind of new, or popular, media that's been unusually silent: no one is making Quibi memes. In fact, the only thing related to Quibi that people are memeing is… well, Quibi itself. </p><h2>Where are all the good Quibi memes?</h2><p>Just over two weeks after its launch, there's been shockingly little chatter on social media memeing any of its programming. That timeline might seem too harsh to make a judgment call, but the streaming environment is cutthroat, and meme cycles around popular media move fast. Thus far, the only content that's <a href="https://www.insider.com/rachel-brosnahan-plays-a-woman-obsessed-with-her-golden-arm-2020-4">managed to go even moderately viral is a clip from Quibi's "50 Stages of Fright" anthology</a> in which Rachel Brosnahan plays a woman obsessed with her gold arm. (It's worth noting that the clip was recorded with a different cell phone, like a parody camrip from what feels like a forgotten pre-screen recording era).</p><p>That tweet has amassed over 30,000 likes, testament to the fact that Quibi content has at least some propensity to draw attention even in its absurdity. That being said, the effort threshold is almost too high for people to care enough — <a href="https://www.theverge.com/2020/4/8/21211463/quibi-screenshot-streaming-netflix-disney-tiktok-instagram-viral-tiger-king">The Verge's Julia Alexander pointed out</a> that the only way Ariana Grande stans were able to share clips from her new show was via promos the star had posted on her Instagram story. If the bar wasn't so high, it stands to reason that people would likely also share clips of <a href="https://www.theverge.com/2020/3/6/21167791/quibi-launch-shows-date-price-murder-house-flipped-dishmantled-nikki-fresh">Quibi's absurd programming slate</a> as well.</p><p>As it stands now, popular tweets about Quibi aren't memeing its content — they're memeing Quibi itself. </p><h2>Quibi is competing with other streaming platforms as well as mobile apps like <keyword id="6762469" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="TikTok">TikTok</keyword>.</h2><p>To understand why the lack of memes is important, you have to think about Quibi's competitors. Netflix has all but perfected the meme promotion strategy, with original programming like 2018's "Bird Box" or the more recent <a href="https://www.insider.com/best-memes-reactions-netflix-documentary-tiger-king-2020-3">"Tiger King" </a>setting off meme storms as people binge-watched them within days of their launch. While Netflix has been accused of trying to create meme campaigns of its own — like <a href="https://www.insider.com/bird-box-netflix-memes-fake-theory-2018-12">with "Bird Box,"</a> (which was never proven true) — a significant portion of online chatter appears to be purely organic. That's a major win for the platform, which has <a href="https://twitter.com/NXOnNetflix/status/1252376499770011648?s=20">adopted</a> <a href="https://twitter.com/NXOnNetflix/status/1251580756482285569?s=20">the</a> <a href="https://twitter.com/NXOnNetflix/status/1251193857888464899?s=20">meme</a> <a href="https://twitter.com/NXOnNetflix/status/1250819550938927104?s=20">strategy</a> <a href="https://twitter.com/netflix/status/1253015245523542016?s=20">on</a> <a href="https://twitter.com/netflix/status/1252670451471400960?s=20">its</a> <a href="https://twitter.com/NetflixFilm/status/1253127293616021505?s=20">own</a> <a href="https://twitter.com/NetflixFilm/status/1253029824068636672?s=20">social</a> <a href="https://twitter.com/seewhatsnext/status/1252727321217208321?s=20">channels</a> as well. </p><p>However, Quibi is a mobile app, and while it's designed to satisfy low attention spans and fill in gaps during viewers' days, it has another important competitor: TikTok. A true cultural force, one of TikTok's greatest strengths is the ease with which users can share not only links to content, but also download some videos (depending on creator permissions) and re-upload them on social networks. While the clout ethics of that are muddy — the original creator doesn't reap the benefits of any likes or engagement with the re-upload — it means that it's incredibly easy to share TikTok memes.</p><h2>Quibi makes it difficult to share content or make memes</h2><p>With Quibi, however, it's impossible to share screenshots or screen recordings. Business Insider's Paige Leskin <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/quibi-blocks-screenshots-viral-content-memes-sharing-streaming-content-shows-2020-4">wrote about Quibi's screenshot block two days after the app launched</a>, writing at the time, that "by preventing screenshots, Quibi could be undercutting its presence on the very social platforms it sees as so crucial to its strategy." While platforms like Netflix and Hulu also block out mobile screenshots, they're easy to grab on desktop, allowing people to create accounts like "<a href="https://twitter.com/nobojackcontext">out of context bojack horseman</a>" with thousands of followers that are essentially free publicity.</p><p>There's an overwhelming feeling that Quibi has no grasp on what it needs to succeed in a cutthroat mobile environment. Even more so than other streaming platforms, it's competing with Twitter, TikTok, and Instagram for viewers' attention, and <a href="https://www.theverge.com/2020/4/10/21216875/fortnite-quibi-punkd-risky-reels-theater-chance-the-rapper">airing an episode of its "Punk'd" reboot in "Fortnite"</a> isn't going to solve its meme outreach problems. Furthermore, it's actively curtailing the ways that people can talk about Quibi and playfully meme its content. It's worth noting too that <a href="https://www.huffpost.com/entry/quibi-podcast-streamiverse_n_5e9f3261c5b6b2e5b8390cf2">per the Huffington Post</a>, Quibi sent a popular fan-made Quibi podcast a cease-and-desist to stop using its name and anything reminiscent of its logo (now, <a href="https://twitter.com/streamiverse">the podcast is called "streamiverse"</a> it's "strictly about spite and revenge"). </p><p>The fact that there are no good Quibi memes, and barely any Quibi memes at all, is a bad sign for the future of the platform. And, he points out, paying someone to write an essay for you isn't technically plagiarism. </span></span></span></span></p><p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;"><span><span><span>"In this case, assuming the essay-writing services are actually providing brand-new essays, <a href="http://www.theatlantic.com/national/archive/2012/10/write-my-essay-please/264036/">no one else's work is being stolen without consent,</a>" Gunderman writes. "It is being purchased. Nevertheless, the work is being used without attribution, and the students are claiming credit for work they never did. In short, the students are cheating, not learning."</span></span></span></span></p><p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;"><span><span><span><span>A quick Google search for "how to find out if student is plagiarizing" serves up tons of tips and tricks for exhausted teachers and parents. </span></span></span></span></span><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">A site called <a href="http://www.plagtracker.com/">PlagChecker lets you type in a phrase or sentence to run against the rest of the internet</a>. <p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Allan Smith/Business Insider</span></p></div><p></p></div></div>CLEVELAND - A non-stop stream of Rolling Stones hits played Wednesday afternoon as a gaggle of reporters, cameramen, photographers, and television anchors awaited Donald Trump's arrival by helicopter to the Republican National Convention here.</p><p>One song in particular, "Time is On My Side," a mid-1960s hit, struck a particular chord.</p><p>"Time, time, time, is on my side, yes it is!" famed Rolling Stones lead singer Mick Jagger proclaimed. The song played at least four times, as if to drive home a message.</p><p>As well more than 100 members of the press awaited what was nothing more than a photo-op from the now-Republican nominee, it made sense in that fleeting moment. Time is on Trump's side. The press waited hours for not even two minutes' worth of Trump speaking next to running mate Mike Pence.</p><p>But the song also exemplifies a recurring theme of Trump's presidential campaign. Namely, he has seemingly blown past almost every controversy to gain attention along his primary run, which happened to come to completion Tuesday night with his official nomination. With the passing of time, each provocative statement becomes a little more of a distant memory in the many minds of undecided voters who will choose the next president in November.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Allan Smith/Business Insider</span></p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>The latest firestorm, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/meredith-mciver-melania-trump-plagiarism-2016-7" target="_blank">centered around the Melania Trump speech's plagiarism</a> of Michelle Obama's 2008 address to the Democratic National Convention, could be another in the rearview mirror by then.</p><p>Time, it seems, is on his side.</p><p>The first couple days of what is Trump's convention have been filled with attacks against presumptive Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton. Take for example, Tuesday night, the second session in a row <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/hillary-clinton-lock-her-up-chants-rnc-convention-2016-7" target="_blank">during which raucous "lock her up" chants ripped through the convention floor</a>. New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie spent his speech lambasting Clinton, asking the audience if she was "guilty" of a litany of statements he made about her.</p><p>The harsh anti-Clinton message will be what Trump and his team tries to push at voters for roughly the next four months. Polls have shown a volatile race over the past couple of months, and Trump is within 3 points of Clinton in the gold-standard RealClearPolitics polling average.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Allan Smith/Business Insider</span></p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>There's still plenty of time.</p><p>Another Rolling Stones hit played right before landing: "Let's Spend the Night Together."</p><p>With his family and his running mate Pence waiting on the ground, Trump's massive airplane that bears his last name flew past the gaggle of press awaiting by the shores of Lake Erie. He gave a brief wave. His speech seemed even briefer.</p><p>"Last time I got accused of speaking a little bit long," he said of his Saturday introduction of Pence as his running mate. "So this time, I'm going speak a lot shorter. But I just want to introduce a man who has become a friend of mine, a man who is going to make an unbelievable vice president of the United States: Gov. Mike Pence."</p><p>He thanked people for showing up and said he's now going to "go and start working."</p><p>As one New York delegate said after the event, the pageantry of his aerial entrance was "remarkable."</p><p>Remarkable is a good word to describe many elements of the Trump candidacy. Now he's arrived in Cleveland for the final two nights of his convention. Unlike the Rolling Stones, he's asking us to spend two nights with him. The Trump show has arrived in Cleveland - here's what it was like to be there

Although he was initially pegged as being the big tough guy in many of his early movies, he has since been able to establish himself as a unique funnyman, which includes being a regular on the TV show "Brooklyn Nine-Nine" and playing the now iconic role (thanks to the presidential election) of Elizondo Mountain Dew Herbert Camacho in the cult comedy "<a href="http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0387808/?ref_=nv_sr_1" target="_blank">Idiocracy.</a>"</p><p>In his latest venture, Crews decided to strip the stereotypes pegged to the city of Detroit for the <keyword id="6354692" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="Travel">Travel</keyword> Channel's series "<a href="http://www.travelchannel.com/shows/celebrity-adventure-club" target="_blank">Celebrity Adventure Club.</a>"</p><p>The show is simple: the network asks where a famous person wants to travel to and they make it happen. Crews passed on exotic locations and returned to the region where he was born and raised to show its resurgence. The episode, premiering Saturday, looks at Detroit and his childhood home in Flint, Michigan to show the ways the community is thriving after years of economic and, in the case of Flint's water issue,&#xa0;<span>ecological</span>&#xa0;hardship.</p><p>Business Insider chatted with Crews about his spotlight on Detroit as well as why he keeps his political views to himself, the reason the anti-Trump fake ads he was supposed to make with the "Idiocracy" creators won't happen, and how the police shootings of Philando Castile and Alton Sterling inspired him to tell his experience of having a police officer point a gun at him.</p><p><strong><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div>Business Insider: How did Travel Channel pitch you being part of "Celebrity Adventure Club?"</strong></p><p><strong>Terry Crews:</strong> They were picking certain celebrities and I was very honored. They had a really nice list and the fact that they came to me was a big honor. So they basically said I could do a doc on any place I wanted.&#xa0;</p><p><strong>BI: Anywhere in the world?</strong></p><p><strong>Crews:</strong> Anywhere in the world. But then it hit me there's one place in the United States that everyone has heard of but no one really knows, and it's Detroit. Unless you're from there you don't really know Detroit. It has never been a travel destination. People are hyper-alert to the negative things that have happened there, but if you go there you see people riding bikes and birds chirping, it's a beautiful place. So I wanted to give another view and show the good things that are happening.</p><p><strong>BI: You showcase so many things in the city, was there one that stood out for you?</strong></p><p><strong>Crews:</strong> The farming. That was crazy. You can't get more inner-city than Detroit, and the fact that these areas were being repurposed [as farms], and there were amazing people who knew all about farming and how it went. And they produce so much food they have to volunteer people to take the food!</p><p><div></div></p><p><strong>BI: You also highlight your hometown of Flint, which has gone through a lot recently with the water problems. How is Flint now and how is your family?</strong></p><p><strong>Crews:</strong> The water situation was going on the whole time we filmed there. But while we filmed it turned out that was the last time I saw my mom in person alive. She died four months after we filmed there. So I decided this is not about the water crisis, this is about my mom. There was enough news on the water crisis, so this was about my mom and my family. I never knew this would be the last time I would see her alive so it was a very personal thing for me to edit. We thought about bringing up the whole water thing but we decided it has already been handled.</p><p><strong>BI: But outside of the show, how is the situation in Flint now?</strong></p><p><strong>Crews:</strong> My father is still there. And people ask, 'Where is Terry Crews on the issue of the water crisis?' and the way I felt was I saw so many people using the situation for their own agenda so I made contributions anonymously. I didn't want "Terry Crews shows up with a truck full of water," because that doesn't solve the problem. I lived in Flint. You give the whole city a truck full of water they will just need it again next week. It's not just the pipes, the whole system is bad. I stayed out of it [publicly] because I didn't want to be a political football. Listen, Flint has been going through this for 30 years, man. When I was in high school there were problems. That's what made Michael Moore's career. Flint has had bad stories for 30 years.</p><p><strong>BI: So you wanted to bring some positivity to the region with the show.&#xa0;</strong></p><p><strong>Crews:</strong> Exactly. I'm an incurable optimist. You have to see the good. You have to find what your thankful for to get energy. If you concentrate on what's wrong all the time you will run out.</p><p><strong>BI: Is it still hard to believe that Donald Trump, a real presidential nominee, is being compared to your "Idiocracy" character, president Camacho?</strong>&#xa0;<br><br /></br></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div><strong>Crews:</strong> Wow, it went non-stop. Believe me I've been hearing it every day and even at the convention I was like "This is a Camacho opening!" [<em>Laughs</em>] It blew my mind. No on knew how prophetic it was when we were doing ["Idiocracy"]. Again, on an optimistic note, I really really think America needs to see what's happening. I think now everybody sees the game. When you saw the whole <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/meredith-mciver-melania-trump-plagiarism-2016-7">plagiarized speech</a> it was so "whoa, that really, happened!" And I think now it forces people to really make decisions. To me, this stuff only makes you better. And you have to put it out there. But I am shocked it was so quick, that's all. I thought it would take 400 more years. [<em>Laughs</em>]<p><strong>BI: Is it true Mike Judge, the director of "Idiocracy," is doing <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/idiocracy-anti-donald-trump-ads-2016-6">anti-Trump fake ads</a>?&#xa0;Is Camacho coming back?</strong></p><p><strong>Crews:</strong> You know what happened, it was killed because Etan Cohen, who wrote ["Idiocracy"], went out and said that we're making anti-Trump ads, but we weren't. This is not what we were doing. I'm not anti-Trump, I'm not anti-Hillary [Clinton]. I'm not pro anybody. What happened was we were going to do a whole thing about everyone. We were literally going to show a cage match between Camacho, Hillary, Trump, [Ted] Cruz, all those people. It was going to be funny. But when you make it an anti-Trump ad what's funny about that? Now you killed the comedy. When you have totally picked a side, there's no funny anymore. So I thought he killed it. Even Mike said it, he was like, 'Dude, I don't know what possessed him to call them anti-Trump ads because that's not what they were.' And I said, 'I know.'</p><p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div><br>But it's funny because the media made Trump. When it was good for ratings you pumped it up. Now you complain. It's too late. And let me say again, I'm not anti-Trump or anti-Hillary, but what the media has to understand is if you live by the sword you die by the sword. Etan Cohen got happy and was like now we're going to knock him down and I was like "I'm not doing that." I never built him up in the first place.&#xa0;<p><strong>BI: So at one time you guys were going to do something but since the debates have ended you've squashed it.</strong>&#xa0;</p><p><strong>Crews:</strong> Squashed. It's killed. And everyone was coming to me saying "Can't wait for you to do the ad," and I was like, "I'm not doing any of that." Everyone wanted me to go against Trump, and I'm like, I'm not your gun. You're not going to use me to knock him down. I'm on no side at all and that's the clear message I'm trying to say.</p><p><strong>BI: And it doesn't sound like you want to make public who you'd vote for.</strong></p><p><strong>Crews:</strong> That's my private decision. And people are angry. I'm just like I'm not getting into that. I'm not that dude. I will never stand for any agenda. Because what if the side you're on is wrong? Then you're stuck. I can't do it.&#xa0;</p><p><strong>BI: You gave a very moving <a href="https://www.facebook.com/realterrycrews/videos" target="_blank">Facebook video post</a> following the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/officer-reacted-to-gun-not-race-in-shooting-2016-7">Philando Castile</a> and <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/alton-sterling-police-shooting-2016-7">Alton Sterling</a> shootings. What motivated you to post your thoughts?</strong></p><p><strong>Crews:</strong> My heart broke watching those videos of Philando Castile and Alton Sterling. And I just felt, you can't tell me there's another way. That's all I wanted to say. And with the media, and the coverage, when are you hyping it up to a point where now subconsciously it makes people who are not black feel safer that this is happening? And that's just a theory. I didn't accuse anyone, people were coming at me on Facebook about it. But then on the other side, as a black man, subconsciously, it makes me hyper-vigilant. If I get pulled over tomorrow I'm thinking about the videos, I'm thinking I'm going to get shot. And the day I posted that video that night the Dallas shootings happened, I couldn't believe it. And that's the hyper-vigilance I spoke about.&#xa0;<br><br><strong>BI: And some people will be reading this and think, what's <em>celebrity</em> Terry Crews know? But you state in your video that you were pulled over once in LA and the officer walked up to your car with a gun drawn.</strong></br></br></p><p><strong>Crews:</strong> Yeah. This was my first time in LA and the cop had his gun pointed at me. And I remember I had my hands at ten and two [on the steering wheel]. And I said I'm not going to move my hands because I knew he could kill me. And I was just like why does this police officer have his gun out? But it was after the LA riots, so maybe it was police being hyper-vigilant. But I knew to be calm. I didn't speak until I was spoken to. I wasn't going to give him a reason. I mean, just as a Caucasian male walks through an alley that's full of gang members and he feels very intimidated, I used to feel that way walking through a bank. A black man walking into a bank and you have all of these older white gentleman looking at me, I felt very intimidated. These are the realities of how you think and you don't even know why. The hyper-vigilance. One by one I've gone through the things in my own life in my own head that take me out. And that's what I was trying to tell people with the Facebook video. To think things out. And another thing we need are good police officers, and there are a lot of them, to stand up and say this is not me. That would heal so much. But a lot of times these people don't say anything.
