Centenarian <keyword id="8734576" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="kalitara-mandal">Kalitara Mandal</keyword>, the oldest voter in Delhi, on Saturday cast her vote and urged people to take part in the democratic exercise. Aged 111, she came to a polling station in CR Park along with her son, grandson and other family members. She flashed her inked wrinkled finger to photographers after voting. "I am happy to vote in this election. I don't remember how many elections I have taken part in, but as a responsible citizen, we must vote. I urge other citizens to also come out and vote," Mandal told . Born in undivided India in Barisal (now in Bangladesh) in 1908, Mandal has seen the subcontinent go through turbulent phases many times, including two partitions, and lived "twice as a refugee" in India along with her family before finding a home in the national capital. There are a total of 132 centenarian voters in Delhi -- 68 males and 64 females. Mandal, who has seen and participated in nearly all elections in India in the last century, fondly recalled the time when ballot boxes were used to cast votes. "Yes, I remember, they (polling officials) would take my thumb impression and then the ballot paper would be folded and put into boxes. I have voted with big machines (EVMs) too," she said. She is the eldest of four generations of Mandals who live in C R Park area, a famous Bengali enclave set up in the national capital after the 1971 Indo-Pakistan War that led to the creation of Bangladesh. The assistant returning officer who escorted Mandal from her home in K-Block, Harish Kumar, said, "I feel blessed to have been given this job". "In this age, she came out and voted, it should be an inspiration for all of us Indians, to use our democratic right of voting," he said. Kumar said, there is another centenarian in the Greater Kailash constituency. Mandal has lost all her teeth but definitely not her appetite for fish and the will to participate in the election. Voting for the 70-member Delhi Assembly is underway.

There has been a significant rise in the number of women voters over the last few years. Of a total of 14,692,136 voters in Delhi, over 660,000 are female. “In 1962, women’s turnout was 15% lower than men’s turnout; but by 2014 women’s turnout had almost reached parity with men, short by only 1.5%,” according to book called ‘The Verdict’, authored by veteran Indian journalist Prannoy Roy and psephologist Dorab Sopariwala.  These are some of the highlights from the voting day: The polling began at 8 am and will end at 6 pm. The voter turnout has been recorded at 4.33% till 10 am, according to ANI. Meanwhile, Arvind Kejriwal who cast his vote, along with his family, in the New Delhi constituency made several appeals to the electorate. "You must go to vote. Special appeal to all women - Just like you bear the responsibility of home, the responsibility of the country and Delhi is also on you. All of you ladies must go to vote and also take the men of your house. Make sure to discuss with men about who are the right ones to vote for," Kejriwal said in a tweet this morning in Hindi. Soon after, he expressed anguish over reported attempts to bribe voters. The Election Commission's data shows that they seized ₹57 crore -- ₹12.33 crore cash, ₹2.83 core liquor and ₹42.32 in other assets like narcotics, bullion and jewelry. "Because of our enforcement and the preventive action, the election has passed peacefully," said the Election Commissioner of Delhi. Multiple EVM snags were also reported, including <a href="https://www.news18.com/news/politics/delhi-elections-2020-live-updates-assembly-polls-voting-aap-bjp-congress-shaheen-bagh-arvind-kejriwal-modi-2492067.html" data-type="tilCustomLink" target="_blank">one in Kejriwal's constituency</a>. Security has been beefed up along the borders of Delhi. Video recordings and vehicles are being checked at 36 points between Ghaziabad and Delhi, <a href="https://www.aninews.in/news/national/general-news/tight-vigil-at-ghaziabad-gurugram-border-ahead-of-polling-today20200208033646/" data-type="tilCustomLink" target="_blank">according to an ANI report</a>. Security forces kept a tight watch across the 70 constituencies, with police and paramilitary personnel keeping an "extra vigil" in sensitive areas like Shaheen Bagh, Jamia Nagar and Seelampuri, the IANS reported.
