As a result, some players <a target="_blank" rel="noopener nofollow" href="https://www.polygon.com/2020/7/6/21314543/the-last-of-us-2-harassment-neil-druckmann-laura-bailey-naughty-dog-abby-death-threats-ps4"><u>harassed and threatened the developers, Druckmann,</u></a> and <a target="_blank" rel=" nofollow" href="https://www.nme.com/news/gaming-news/the-last-of-us-part-ii-director-on-fan-hate-thats-their-reaction-and-you-dont-fight-that-2699046"><u>voice actors</u></a> for its story.</p><h2 id="03dafa74-3374-4ae9-a87e-918d4ea9baca"><strong>Will Joel die in 'The Last of Us' season two? It's likely</strong></h2><p>Joel's fate is the question on every fan's mind, since it's the major jumping-off point of the sequel game. Even Pascal has admitted his character's death is a possibility in season two.</p><div type="image" title="Pedro Pascal as Joel on season one of &quot;The Last of Us.&quot;" height="1280" width="1707" msid="106879726" hostid="261"></div><p>"It wouldn't make sense to follow the first game so faithfully only to stray severely from the path," Pascal told <a target="_blank" rel="nofollow" href="https://www.esquire.com/entertainment/tv/a43518988/pedro-pascal-the-last-of-us-interview-2023/?utm_campaign=likeshopme&amp;utm_content=www.instagram.com%2Fp%2FCq5SRIztQFt%2F&amp;utm_medium=instagram&amp;utm_source=dash+hudson">Esquire in April 2023</a>.</p><p>"If that does take place in the show, I don't know that I'm emotionally ready for it," he added.</p><p>However, Mazin <a target="_blank" href="https://ew.com/tv/the-last-of-us-season-2-bella-ramsey-time-jump/">told Entertainment Weekly</a> that fans can expect some changes from the sequel game in season two, saying, "It's going to be different, and it will be its own thing. It won't be exactly like the game."</p><p>Maybe that means there's a chance Joel could live, or at least make it to the end of season two, due to Pascal's immense popularity.</p><p>Since the second game became controversial, it's likely the show may flesh out Abby's character more before killing Joel off, if the show decides to go that route. But it would be difficult to envision season two straying from Joel's death since it's the key motivation for Ellie's path in the sequel game.</p><h2 id="ddbd21fc-1224-46d5-8482-485eee5aed33"><strong>There will be more infected</strong></h2><div type="image" title="TLOU infected zombie" height="1280" width="1707" msid="106879727" hostid="261"></div><p>In the game, players are constantly outmaneuvering and killing a large number of the people who have been infected and taken over by the cordyceps virus. Though the infected showed up <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/the-last-of-us-bloater-adam-basil-actor-sex-icon-2023-2">in a few key scenes</a>, they weren't a main fixture of season one, which placed a large emphasis on character relationships and world-building.</p><p>"It's quite possible that there will be a lot more infected later. And perhaps different kinds," Mazin <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/the-last-of-us-season-2-more-infected-2023-3">said during a press conference</a> for the finale in 2023.</p><p>On HBO's <a target="_blank" href="https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/episode-9-look-for-the-light/id1660320068?i=1000603849713">"The Last of Us" podcast</a>, Mazin added that season two will likely further explore the idea of the Cordyceps hive mind and how they can be a major threat together.</p><p>"I think this next season, the interconnectivity of them, and the risk of stepping on the wrong thing, that stuff is going to be brought forward more for sure," Mazin said.</p><h2 id="4e1ba23d-5669-4247-8288-d53753d9f3eb">Joel has a little more hair</h2><p id="4e1ba23d-5669-4247-8288-d53753d9f3eb">HBO released teaser images for season two during Warner Bros. "If I had read something that I thought was that 'Notting Hill' level of writing or 'My Best Friend's Wedding' level of madcap fun, I would do it. Los Angeles, Jul 15 () "Star Wars" star Kelly Marie Tran has boarded Hulu's upcoming anthology series "Monsterland". <p>Tran joins previously announced cast members Kaitlyn Dever, Taylor Schilling and Mike Colter, reported Variety. </p><p>The horror series is based on the short stories from Nathan Ballingrud's collection, "North American Lake Monsters". </p><p>It follows "broken people driven to desperate acts in an attempt to repair their lives, ultimately showing there is a thin line between man and monster". </p><p>Tran will play Lauren in an episode titled 'Iron River, MI'. </p><p>Her character has just returned to her small hometown of Iron River, Michigan to be married. That becomes even more evident when Molly overhears people talking about her in the bathroom. Molly thinks she has the ultimate comeback: that all their goofing off in high school got them nowhere while she is off to Yale in the fall. But she's wrong.</p><p>Turns out one of the people she confronts is also going to Yale and another has a job at Google. In fact, every member of her graduating class who Molly thought was beneath her is going to an esteemed college. Molly is completely gobsmacked, and even Amy's sweet tunes on an autoharp can't sooth her.</p><p>Convinced she and Amy did high school all wrong, Molly decides they have to make it all up in one night by going to the big year-end house party. But that's also the huge challenge. Because the structure of the movies are often similar, you have to really be strong in the details to stand out.</p><p>And with "Booksmart," here's where it thrives:</p><ul><li>The strong supporting characters.</li><li>The originality of the "last night out" story arc - from Amy's parents allowing her to sleep over at Molly's because they think the two are gay lovers, to the FOMO through social <keyword id="6354777" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Media">media</keyword> as they plead with people to send them the address to the party.</li><li>A stop-motion animation sequence that occurs when the girls take drugs, but really is a commentary on how society perceives beauty.</li></ul><p>The movie doesn't just have its pulse on what today's youth are going through, it goes a step further: it is defining a generation.</p><p>Wilde's clear vision makes the movie so entertaining you are sad to see it end. Beanie Feldstein follows up her great supporting role in "Lady Bird" with a strong lead performance here. Billie Lourd is a scene stealer in the role of party girl Gigi. 'Booksmart' is more than just the must-see movie of the summer: it's generation-defining

<p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div>Not even a cast full of famous faces such as Adam Sandler, Jennifer Garner, Emma Thompson, <span class="itemprop">Rosemarie DeWitt,</span> and Ansel Elgort can save d<span style="line-height: 1.5em;">irector Jason Reitman's new movie, "Men, Women &amp; Children."</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;">It's a movie full of big, relevant ideas that all fail to make any impact due to the film's lack of subtlety. By employing an omniscient, overbearing narration style, Reitman breaks a cardinal rule of writing: he's telling rather than showing. Instead of understanding how these characters feel through their actions, I know how they feel because an important-sounding British woman tells me so.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;">The film pretentiously opens in outer space, as a Woody Allen-esque jazz number croons and the dulcet tones of Emma Thompson, the film's narrator, lecture the audience on the </span><em style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;">Voyager</em><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;"> space program. </span><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;">This all-knowing entity</span><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;"> describes how satellites that amplified human sounds were sent into space to give any potential extraterrestrials a sample of life on earth. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;">After this unnecessary history lesson, we home in on a morose man (Adam Sandler) as he goes to his son's room to use his computer to masturbate. When he discovers his son's Internet history is full of pornography, the narrator tells us Sandler feels sad that the old-school ritual of finding your dad's stack of porn magazines seems to have been lost in this technological age.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;"><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div>Sandler is just one poor sap in this ensemble piece, but this scene encapsulates all you need to know about the film: these characters are not believable people, just conduits for spreading a Luddite mentality. <span>The movie wishes to shame those embracing the internet age by exaggerating the dangers and showcasing how disconnected we are as people because of it.</span></span></p>
<p>This perfectly valid criticism gets overshadowed by all the melodramatic excess, as Reitman can't help but shoehorn in other important, controversial topics no matter how tenuous their relationship to technology dependence. For example, there's an entire subplot surrounding a young woman with an eating disorder, and this is tied to the narrative through the pro-anorexia Tumblrs she visits. The film also<span style="line-height: 1.5em;"> deals with eating disorders, stage parents and the idea of celebrity, overprotective parents, bullying, teenage pregnancy, and suicide, but the film's two-hour runtime allows for only the broadest of strokes. There's even a way of dealing with 9/11 that made me cringe with how lazily it was thrown in.</span></p>
<p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">Although Sandler might be commended for taking on a more ambitious role than usual, he sleepwalks through most of the film. It's not his fault, though, as this is how his character is written. Other stars like DeWitt, Garner, and Simmons are wasted in boring roles, and there are brief hints of life when the film spends time with Judy Greer and "Breaking Bad's" Dean Norris, who actually give decent performances in spite of everything that surrounds them. </span><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">The two youngest characters in the film, played by Kaitlyn Dever and Ansel Elgort, are the most interesting, as their relationship is the only thing that comes off as genuine. </span></p>

<p><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;">Reitman is best known for his unique style of comedy that deal with serious issues, like "<a href="http://www.amazon.com/Juno-Single-Disc-Edition-Ellen-Page/dp/B000YABYLA">Juno</a>" with teen pregnancy or unemployment in "<a href="http://www.amazon.com/Up-Air-George-Clooney/dp/B00337KM2S">Up In The Air</a>." Something has been lost in his transition to full blown drama, as this and its critically-panned predecessor "<a href="http://www.amazon.com/Labor-Day-Kate-Winslet/dp/B00K0CB1G0">Labor Day</a>" just don't work. Here's hoping his next directorial effort sees Reitman returning to the more darkly comedic territory he knows best. </span></p>

Not Even An All-Star Cast Can Save Jason Reitman's 'Men, Women & Children'

<p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Annapurna Pictures</span></p><p class="caption">"Booksmart."</p></div><p></p></div></div></p><ul class="summary-list"><li>"Booksmart" (currently playing in theaters) is a critical darling and the must-see movie of the summer.</li><li>But before it became the feature directing debut of actress Olivia Wilde, it was a 2009 selection of The Black List and went through two different versions of story development before finding its way to Annapurna Pictures and female-focused company, Gloria Sanchez Productions.</li><li>Gloria Sanchez head Jessica Elbaum and screenwriter Katie Silberman talked to Business Insider about getting "Booksmart" to the screen.</li><li><a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/?hprecirc-bullet">Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories.</a></li></ul><p> </p><p>"Booksmart" came into the entertainment world with this description in the <a href="https://blcklst.com/2009-black-list" target="_blank" rel="noopener">2009 edition of The Black List</a>, an annual list that gets passed around Hollywood of the best screenplays not yet produced:</p><p>Ten years (two more screenwriters, a relentless producer, and an ambitious actress making her feature directing debut) later, the movie, now with a one-word title instead of two, has critics gushing and is one of the most anticipated movies of the summer.</p><p>How in the world did we get here?</p><p>Let's pick things up around 2014. At that point, the Halpern and Haskins (producers/writers on "Black-ish" and "The Mayor") script had made the rounds but not gotten anywhere. Then Susanna Fogel (director of "The Spy Who Dumped Me") came on the give it a pass. She made one of the characters gay and tweaked the plot from overachieving high-school girls trying to get boyfriends by prom, to overachievers realizing their two crushes are single and seeking them out at an after-prom party.</p><p>Megan Ellison's Annapurna Pictures saw potential and bought it. The company then teamed with Jessica Elbaum of Gloria Sanchez productions, the female-focused production shingle of Will Ferrell and Adam McKay's Gary Sanchez Productions, to make it.</p><p>"It was something that I was instantly attracted to and something that I wish I had as a kid," Elbaum told Business Insider of why she signed on. "It was reminiscent of 'The Breakfast Club' and 'Fast Times at Ridgemont High' and I had not made one of those yet so I was like, 'Yes, sign me up!'"</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Annapurna Pictures</span></p><p class="caption">Olivia Wilde on the set of "Booksmart."</p></div><p></p></div></div>And Elbaum thought she had the perfect director for it: her friend, Olivia Wilde.</p><p>Wilde is known best as an actress with a filmography that ranges from "The O.C." to "TRON: Legacy," but recently she has been putting her focus into producing and directing shorts and music videos as well.</p><p>"We were driving one day and I told her that I had the perfect project for her," Elbaum recalled telling Wilde. "I sent her the script and literally two days later she said she loved it."</p><p>Wilde came in and pitched for the directing job. But she didn't stroll in thinking she had it locked up because of her Hollywood pedigree. She showed up with a full outline of how she wanted to do the movie with visual aids that included one sequence that would be in stop-motion animation, in which she wanted the two leads to become Barbie dolls.</p><p>Wilde got the job.</p><p>Next, Elbaum connected Wilde with screenwriter Katie Silberman, who had recently wrapped on what would become the romantic comedy sensation for Netflix, "Set It Up."</p><p>"What we wanted to do was update the story to 2019, because so much had changed for young women," Silberman told Business Insider. "We really clicked when we realized we wanted to do the same thing."</p><p>And that "same thing" was telling a high-school story that would pay homage to the classics in the genre, but also resonate with young people today.</p><p>Then Silberman pitched Wilde the idea that would make "Booksmart" stand out:</p><p style="padding-left: 40px;">What if the two friends realized that they did high school all wrong? What if they realized that everyone they thought just partied and wasted their high-school years were going to Ivy League schools just like them?</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Annapurna Pictures</span></p><p class="caption">(L-R) Beanie Feldstein and Kaitlyn Denver in "Booksmart."</p></div><p></p></div></div>They scrapped the prom plot and the story now revolved around the two friends, Molly (Beanie Feldstein) and Amy (Kaitlyn Dever), embarking on a night out to find the end-of-school-year party.</p><p>The film was shot last summer in 26 days around Los Angeles with four weeks of night shoots. That wasn't an ideal situation for any filmmaker, let alone someone making her first feature. But Silberman, who was also a producer on the movie, said it was Wilde's focus that kept everyone on task.</p><p>"You need someone at the helm who has a fundamentally strong idea of what the story is," she said. "Olivia not only understood it so well but was really brilliant at making sure we knew it too and conveying it to us."</p><p>That was a necessary element because - from casting through shooting - Silberman was constantly tweaking the script to fit the actors' strengths. "So we would either create new characters or adjust what was on the page to make it fit that person."</p><p>There were also whole new sequences made from scratch that needed to be fit into the story, like Wilde's idea for a stop-motion sequence.</p><p>In the movie when Molly and Amy accidentally take drugs for the first time, Wilde wanted their hallucination to be specific. And for two feminists, nothing would freak them out more than being turned into Barbie dolls. So Silberman crafted the scene in the middle of the movie, and gave it a little kick at the end.</p><p>"Their version of the drug nightmare would be being stuck in the body of a Barbie doll, which represents everything they think is wrong with society, and then one of them actually likes it," Silberman said.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Annapurna Pictures</span></p><p class="caption">(L-R) Katie Silberman and Olivia Wilde on the set of "Booksmart."</p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>It was the ambition of Wilde that thrilled both Silberman and Elbaum.</p><p>"As a producer, you hear about shooting, say, an underwater shot, [and] all you think is it's going to add time and money - and the stop-motion sequence is typically something that would be the first thing on the chopping block - but she pulled it off," Elbaum said. "She made the movie feel bigger than what it should have been, that's not easy."</p><p>The movie had its world premiere at the South By Southwest Film Festival this year and was an instant hit. Critics are almost universally in love with it and it has a 98% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.</p><p>"We wanted young women to see themselves, especially if they have felt they haven't been given that before," said Silberman, who is currently developing another female buddy movie with Wilde. "But I think it's really rewarding that men are responding to it as well as women. Older people as well as high schoolers. Because it's meant as much to be nostalgic as it is modern."</p><p>But Elbaum added that the changing tide in Hollywood has helped women-led stories like "Booksmart." Back in 2009 (when "Booksmart" was "Book Smart"), it would have been difficult to get the movie released in a significant way.</p><p>"What I have set out to do is work with women in front and behind the camera, and tell stories that are by women but for everybody," Elbaum said.
