"What can be seen as a challenge or a hurdle that you are not able to overcome might also help you sharpen your thinking and challenge you or your beliefs."Hanoa tries to live by this <keyword id="34454" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="leadership">leadership</keyword> principle as he steers a growing Kahoot! through uncertain times. The company currently has a market cap of <a href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/stocks/khotf-stock">over $5 billion</a> as of February 3. The company's revenue hit $17 million in Q4 of 2020, up 230% from the same quarter in 2019, <a href="https://kahoot.com/investor/announcements/kahoot-as-trading-update-q4-2020/">according to its financial results.</a>The company continues to expand its offerings with Zoom and Bitmoji integrations, new free and premium tools for school and work use, and its<a href="https://languagedrops.com/kahoot"> recent acquisition of language learning platform Drops.</a> Leading a company through such a critical period of growth can be daunting, but Hanoa said it has been a good opportunity for him and the rest of the company to learn and grow. Along the way, he's relied on a couple crucial strategies to steer the company.<h2>Compete with tomorrow </h2>Hanoa is always looking for new ways to push his team to accomplish even more.That involves getting out of your comfort zone and questioning your own beliefs. In Hanoa's words, that means "competing with tomorrow," or engaging in a form of competition with yourself to make sure you're constantly improving. "That's the mindset that forces you to come out of the comfort zone and really challenge your own beliefs," he said. "What was good enough yesterday is not good enough tomorrow. How can we get there? What do we need to do differently to get there?"Your biggest competitor, Hanoa said, needs to be yourself. That's why he encourages his team members to share new ideas and listen to new proposals, whether they come from a new junior hire or a senior advisor. In fact, he said that having a constant flow of fresh talent helps bring in new worldviews and ideas for improvement. When faced with new ideas, Hanoa said leaders need to have "less pride in the origin of the idea and more pride in making it work." <h2>'Hurry slowly' </h2>It's important to take careful considerations when a new idea is presented to you. But you'll often have to act quickly. Balance swift decisions with deliberate reasoning, Hanoa said. It's a lesson he learned from his father, a neurosurgeon who gave Hanoa the advice to "hurry slowly." In his father's line of work, it's necessary to work quickly, but a rash decision could cost patients their lives. That's why it's important to find a balance. "You want to be eager, passionate, and forward-leaning, but at the same time with quality and doing it right," Hanoa said, adding that he is "constantly evaluating and making sure that we have quality in every single step on the way to deliver that at the end." Even at times of high growth, Hanoa makes a point to reflect on company decisions before moving forward to make sure that each project is properly executed. He doesn't think of it as lost time, but instead as a necessary measure to make sure he's doing things right. "Never underestimate the time it takes to build something solid," Hanoa said. "Sometimes you have to say, 'Let's take a half a step back to really evaluate this.'"

They should be told about new recruits and "given a run-down of their strengths and what they'll be bringing to the team. This makes the new member of staff less of a rival, and more of a team member," Campbell adds.He also suggests setting up one-on-one meetings or calls to help employees to get to know their colleagues better. <h2 dir="ltr">Share knowledge in morning meetings</h2>Starting the day with a group meeting can help set the tone for the rest of the day, along with setting expectations and tasks for the entire team."Business owners should remember that if they want to foster an information-sharing culture, this also applies to them," Campbell adds.Allow each staff member to have the opportunity to speak about any information they have gathered that they think would be useful to the team, and ensure that employees that share are praised for doing so. <h2 dir="ltr">Set up a noticeboard</h2>Managers can set up physical or online noticeboards to post important information on.Details posted can be shared in meetings, giving a boost to employees who that shared that information, Campbell says.<h2 dir="ltr">Team-building activities </h2>The secret to a successful team-building activity is identifying the reasons for communication breakdowns and selecting an appropriate activity to target the problems, per Campbell. Most of us begin and end our days by either endlessly doomscrolling through digital sludge or joyscrolling through happy-making memes.We have become socially and emotionally dependent on screens.<a href="https://www.insider.com/what-is-dopamine-fasting-according-to-neuroscientist-2019-11">"Dopamine detoxing,"</a> a wellness trend that's gained recent traction <a href="https://www.tiktok.com/tag/dopaminedetox" target="_blank" rel="noopener">on TikTok</a>, offers a possible solution. The idea is to try to source dopamine, or the natural brain chemical that makes you feel good, from anywhere other than your smartphone or TV. Most participants stop using social media, eat meals in silence, and don't check their phones for at least an hour after waking up. Some TikTokers' are detoxing<a href="https://www.tiktok.com/@rayjason.fit/video/7227166277310139674" target="_blank" rel="noopener"> beyond tech</a>, like swapping soda for water. "You're unhappy because you're constantly happy — it's now normal to be drowning in dopamine," TikToker <a href="https://www.tiktok.com/@rayjason.fit/video/7185636978254236934" target="_blank" rel="noopener">@rayjason.fit says in his viral video</a> about the trend. "When you start embracing silence, solitude, and space to think, boring things become absolutely beautiful."TikTokers who've tried the trend generally <a href="https://www.tiktok.com/@psychadvice/video/7221275640706665774" target="_blank" rel="noopener">speak positively</a> about it. They said detoxing cleared <a href="https://www.tiktok.com/t/ZTRoBUvhe/?t=2" target="_blank" rel="noopener">their brain fog</a> and helped them <a href="https://www.tiktok.com/@kaylahunt_/video/7221346597395877163" target="_blank" rel="noopener">enjoy living</a> again. Perhaps the <a href="https://www.tiktok.com/t/ZTRoBUvhe/?t=2" target="_blank" rel="noopener">most striking observation</a> I saw was by a participant who said that on detox day five they felt like "a kid again" — as though by not using technology, someone could access a feeling that they haven't felt in decades. I wanted to try the detox for myself. As someone who is paid to write about internet culture and thus spends hours every day thinking about trends, influencers, and social media dramas, I was curious to see if dopamine detoxing could cleanse my frazzled brain. I also wanted to know if it would even be possible for me to unplug, considering I'm incentivized to be plugged in five days a week.Over a recent three-day weekend, I underwent a drastic detox: I committed to only 10 minutes of social media use a day and no phone use unless I needed it for texts or logistical planning.When I finished the dopamine detox on Monday night, I was disappointed that I didn't experience any major seismic shifts. But I could see just how impactful the trend could be if I stuck with it for longer. Here are some of the biggest takeaways from my mini screen diet. <h2>The dopamine detox wasn't too hard…mostly because I kept a busy schedule</h2>The internet is woven so deeply into my life that I thought it would be impossible to fight the Pavlovian urge to flick through apps.But, surprisingly, it wasn't so hard because I packed my schedule with other engaging real-world things. I chilled at McCarren Park in Brooklyn and watched picnickers and gymnasts grow apple-red sunburns. I walked over the Williamsburg Bridge at sunset and ate bagels on my balcony, even enjoying the symphony of traffic on the street below. I traveled to New Jersey to see a friend.There were several moments when I yearned to open my phone and I had to actively resist the impulse. But the payoff was worthwhile: The more I diverted my attention to my IRL surroundings, the more sounds and sights I noticed, and the more I relaxed into the natural chaos of New York City.To properly detox, you have to try to rival your excitement for your phone or TV with other stimuli. Otherwise you might find yourself twitchy, bored, and restless. I felt like I was rewiring my dopamine centers the most while doing something else. <h2>Overall, the detox definitely had positive results</h2>The positive effects of detoxing became noticeable when I traveled to rural New Jersey. The combination of detaching from the internet and being out in the wilderness offered me a real chance to breathe. I felt like a tourist again when I returned to the city on Monday: the streets seemed fuller and more colorful. That brain-itch to keep constantly checking Instagram or texting friends back had almost dissipated!I read Emma Cline's novel "The Guest" over the weekend, which was an interesting parallel to the experience. (The protagonist wanders aimlessly around Long Island with a broken phone, and her sense of reality is warped by alcohol and painkillers.) My experience was much more positive than hers, but there was a similar sensation of being adrift with no anchor.A core contextualizing force of my life — the internet, social media, buzzy topics — was starting to dissolve.Sadly, when I returned to work on Tuesday morning, it was like the detox had never happened. The first plunge back onto social media reignited both the rush and digital fatigue. Perhaps the experiment's effects would have been more impactful if I had extended it for a week or a month. Still, it had an effect on my daily life. I'm committed to firmer boundaries, like no phone use at the start and end of the day and making mealtimes no-screen zones. Near the end of my detox, I started to wonder how it would be possible to continue working as an internet culture reporter if I were unplugged. I'd need to go into the real world to find tech and social media-related stories. I'd have to call my boss to talk through my pitches for the day, and type out articles on a typewriter or hand-write them on paper. It would be arduous and absurd.(Kieran's editor's note: We acknowledge the sticky paradoxes of conducting this experiment as Kieran is a talented internet reporter. I'm confident cutting social media time, if he needs it, will not make him a less sharp, stealthy writer. However, approaching this job with old-school journalistic rigor could be an, uh, interesting experiment down the line.) As with everything, moderation is key. Some dopamine detox models are militantly restrictive and, ironically, can create more anxiety to be perfect, as if humans are machines <a href="https://www.tiktok.com/@realimangadzhi/video/7125023105814154502" target="_blank" rel="noopener">that can be optimized</a>. Also, online life is different for everyone, and there are certainly healthy ways to use screens without falling into <a href="https://www.insider.com/best-internet-places-stop-doomscrolling-2023-5">doomscroll despair</a>. One thing I noticed after spending so much time offline is that I actually found it easier to come up with internet culture story ideas.Taking a break allowed me to see the tech landscape with fresh eyes. Ironically, I'd probably do my job better if I was online less.

Kahoot! also pulled data from student and teacher devices on the company platform.While Apple iOS dominated mobile usage, Chrome OS was by far the prevailing platform for desktops. In the first quarter of 2017, Mac OS accounted for just 11% of operating systems, compared to 58% for Chrome OS. Windows came in second at 31%.Likewise, Google Chromebooks outshined Apple iPads by a substantial margin. Chromebooks made up 44% of teachers' tablet use and 46% of students' use. Windows laptops ranked second among teachers, while Apple iPads ranked second among students.In addition, Google's productivity suite - a hub for issuing assignments and giving feedback, known as Classroom - was the most widely used suite in the sample. More than half (57%) of all teachers surveyed said they use it. Google is dominating Apple in the classroom

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Jon Levy has successfully built a community of influential people through trust-building events.</li><li>What he learned about relationships has helped him bring his events into the virtual world.</li><li>He says leaders can build trust in remote teams through psychological safety and "the IKEA effect."</li></ul>For the past decade, I've used my expertise in behavioral science to build a community of thousands of Fortune 500 executives, Nobel laureates, celebrities, Olympians, and even influencers. These industry leaders - in groups of 12 - would come to my home to cook me dinner and build trusted friendships in the process.When I started these <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/master-networker-jon-levy-party-2015-1">"Influencers" dinners</a>, I had no status, money, or access, but I was able to build this community based on trust.In 2020, as the world began working remotely, I took our community gatherings virtual, and they thrived. That's because we understood that for groups to function remotely, we needed to change our approach.While researching my new book, "<a href="https://amzn.to/3cSNuhm">You're Invited: The Art and Science of Cultivating Influence</a>," what became clear was that our success is defined by who we're connected to, how much they trust us, and the sense of belonging we share. In fact, your company stock value, employee sick days, and profitability are all tied to the level of trust your employees feel. As we struggle with solidifying remote teams and hybrid workforces, these factors have never been more important.Here are five strategies for leaders to help team members communicate openly with each other and boost morale and trust:<h2>Don't micromanage people - it suggests you don't trust them</h2>One of the biggest problems we face is that managers are used to managing people. As the physical distance grows, managing people turns into micromanaging, and as a result, people end up on far too many Zoom meetings.Instead, managers need to focus on outcomes. This means empowering team members to make competent decisions, being a resource to keep projects on course, and getting roadblocks out of the way.We have to be deliberate about how and when we communicate progress. To reduce concerns, we also need to foster more trust between team members - this would allow us to give people the benefit of the doubt since we no longer have the convenience of bumping into them in the hallway or cafeteria to check up on how things are going. <h2>Foster joint efforts</h2>Unfortunately, most of the techniques we use to build trust, like giving people gifts or taking them to expensive meals, isn't what causes us to trust one another.Instead, it turns out we need to do the opposite - we need to get them invested. This is known as <a href="https://www.psychologytoday.com/us/blog/the-shaping-us/201910/the-ikea-effect">the IKEA effect</a>.People care more about their IKEA furniture because they have to assemble it themselves. If we want greater trust among teams, we have to find ways to have team members invest effort in one another. This will cause them to care more about one another.For example, instead of having a Zoom happy hour, have team members play games as small teams with each other. These games can be anything from <a href="https://www.jackboxgames.com/quiplash/">Quiplash</a> and <a href="https://kahoot.com/">Kahoot!</a> to Jeopardy or trivia. The shared effort will cause them to care more about one another and lead to greater levels of trust.<h2>Be vulnerable</h2>The IKEA effect works because of something called vulnerability loops.There is a misconception that trust precedes vulnerability, but the truth is when we signal vulnerability, it gives people an opportunity to signal vulnerability back. As a result, trust increases.For example, if I tell my coworker I'm overwhelmed, that signals vulnerability. If they ignore me or make fun of me, trust is reduced, but if they acknowledge that and share how overwhelmed they've been feeling as well, we've both demonstrated that we're safe with each other and trust is increased.When we participate in a game, activity, or project, it allows for people to open and close vulnerability loops quickly, and as a byproduct trust will be increased.A vulnerability loop doesn't require talking about embarrassing memories of our childhood or recalling our fears - it could simply be asking for a coworker's advice or putting ourselves out there and inviting them to hang out.<h2>Focus on psychological safety</h2>When <a href="https://rework.withgoogle.com/print/guides/5721312655835136/">Google looked at the greatest predictor of team success</a>, it wasn't IQ or tenure - it was psychological safety.This is the feeling that we can express our opinion, especially if that opinion disagrees with others, without the risk of being punished or kicked out of the group.For human beings, there's no greater punishment than exile or isolation. We want to make sure that people are receiving cues for belonging so they know that they're a valued part of the team and aren't going to be kicked out.When you look at research on company stock value, employee sick days, and profitability, researcher <a href="https://hbr.org/2017/01/the-neuroscience-of-trust">Paul Zak discovered</a> they can all be traced to the level of organizational trust - meaning, the more we feel we belong, the harder we work, and the more successful the company will be.<h2>Don't confuse shyness and introversion</h2>The prevailing view is that introverts recharge from time alone, while extroverts gain energy from being extremely social.Being an introvert is very different from being shy or inhibited. Shyness is the fear of social judgment based on our interactions. The opposite of that is being so uninhibited that we say and do inappropriate things.Shyness may be more about building a muscle. Make sure those who are shy can practice expressing themselves and connecting with others in a safe environment. Meanwhile, introverts may need coaxing, or they may do better in one-on-one or in smaller group conversations. The truth is our lives are defined by our relationships. When we understand the science of how we connect, we uncover possible strategies and approaches that have an incredible ability to influence our teams, organizations, and <keyword id="6354910" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="careers">careers</keyword>. <div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image">Microsoft VenturesM12 head Nagraj Kashyap</div></div></div><ul><li>Microsoft Ventures, the venture capital arm of Microsoft, will be called "M12" moving forward. </li><li>The "M" is for Microsoft, and the "12" comes from the dozen letters in the word "entrepreneur."</li><li>Otherwise, nothing is changing: M12 has invested in 50 startups in two years, with no plans to slow down.</li><li>The reason for the change: There was some confusion between a previous iteration of Microsoft Ventures and the current one. Microsoft sought a new name to make a clean break between old and new.</li></ul>From this day forth, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/microsoft-ventures-head-nagraj-kashyap-startup-contest-2017-10">Microsoft Ventures</a> - the two-year-old venture capital arm of the $710 billion tech titan - will be known by the much shorter name of <a href="http://www.m12.vc">M12</a>.As you might guess, the "M" is for Microsoft, said Nagraj Kashyap, the leader of Microsoft Ventures and now the newly rebranded M12, in an interview with Business Insider.And the number? "'Entrepreneur' is a 12-letter word," said Kashyap.Make no mistake, Kashyap said M12 is still the same organization as before. It's the same team of 20 or so, working from the same four offices worldwide, with the same portfolio of 50-plus startups, mostly in <keyword id="6356323" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="enterprise">enterprise</keyword> software and services. And it's not because the team is trying to hide its association with Microsoft, either, Kashyap said - the name was chosen with the "M" front and center so there was no mistake about where M12 comes from, or that it's a part of Microsoft."We're not disassociating ourselves in any way," said Kashyap. "In fact, we are embracing it."<div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image">MicrosoftThe new M12 logo.</div></div></div>It's more about the fact that the Microsoft Ventures name carries a certain degree of baggage, said Kashyap.<h2>Let the past die</h2>The first iteration of Microsoft Ventures, which started in 2013, was a catch-all name for all of Microsoft's startup accelerator and mentorship programs. While it was called Microsoft Ventures, there was very little actual venture capital investment going on, beyond a little bit of seed money from a handful of small-scale programs.Then, in 2016, Kashyap himself came over from his job leading Qualcomm Ventures, the chipmaker's own venture capital arm. He was put in charge of an all-new Microsoft Ventures, structured more like a traditional Silicon Valley venture firm -and with a mandate to make larger investments in more mature startups. The problem is that this got confusing for many Microsoft Ventures-backed companies, past and present: Companies that were backed under both the old Microsoft Ventures and the new all claimed to be part of the portfolio, confounding even members of Kashyap's own staff. And so, Kashyap and company went in search of a dramatic, clean break with a brand-new name. And so, M12 was born. <h2>Kill it if you have to</h2>Meanwhile, all of those startup mentorship programs will be operating under the new name of Microsoft ScaleUp. Kashyap said that the two work closely together, and that his team has even funded some graduates of their programs. But the new names make it clear that they have different goals, said Kashyap.In general, though, the mission hasn't changed. M12 retains its mandate to invest in enterprise startups, with a broad mandate as to what that means. 3D printing company Markforged is a portfolio company, as is social learning startup Kahoot and diabetes management software provider Livongo. M12's secret sauce, Kashyap said, is that it's empowered to make decisions as quickly as a traditional Silicon Valley venture capital firm - but that it also gives its portfolio companies access to all of Microsoft's resources. After all, Kashyap said, "if we can't help [startups], why are we investing in them?" <div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image">MicrosoftThe M12 team, across offices worldwide.</div></div></div>Sometimes, those resources are technical, as in providing help with implementing artificial intelligence features, or nailing tricky integration with Microsoft Outlook. Sometimes, it's a little more material: Kashyap helped broker a deal between Livongo and Microsoft itself, and now Livongo's service is offered as a Microsoft employee benefit.Either way, Kashyap said that while he's always happy when Microsoft can help a portfolio company, supporting or even using Microsoft technology isn't a prerequisite for getting funded by M12. He's looking for startups that can succeed in the long-term, even if they're building an app for Google's Android that runs on Amazon's cloud. "We are not selecting companies based on platform," said Kashyap.
