She had been <a href="https://www.insider.com/tana-mongeau-racist-tweets-allegations-response-to-her-past-2020-7" target="_blank" rel="noopener">accused of racist microaggressions</a> in videos posted in June and July by two <keyword id="1112328" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Influencers">influencers</keyword> she used to work with — Kahlen Barry and <a href="https://youtu.be/mVplcecMjzY" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Simplynessa15</a> (Nessa Briella) — and immediately came under pressure to respond.But while Mongeau kept posting Instagram stories with promises of addressing the allegations and concerns, it took over three months to publish her <keyword id="3329321" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="apology-video">apology video</keyword>.Mongeau is one of YouTube's most popular creators, who has risen to fame over the last six years with her candid, over-the-top storytime videos, and controversies such as her <a href="https://www.insider.com/timeline-of-jake-paul-and-tana-mongeaus-relationship-2019-6" target="_blank" rel="noopener">turbulent relationship with fellow YouTuber Jake Paul</a>.She spoke to Insider about the things she had to face up to about herself over the summer, and how she's still on a learning curve to be a worthy role model to her 5.5 million-strong fanbase.<h2>Tana Mongeau and Kahlen Barry's friendship</h2>Barry posted his video, "<a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KAev3BVNh6g&amp;t=2st=2s" target="_blank" rel="noopener">finally revealing the truth about Tana Mongeau</a>," on June 16 where he accused Mongeau of gaslighting and dismissing his feelings and concerns over her using racial slurs <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nf2qWFW-VvY&amp;ab_channel=KTl=KT" target="_blank" rel="noopener">in old footage</a> and <a href="https://twitter.com/needysmiIe/status/1274931799253118976" target="_blank" rel="noopener">social media posts</a> when they worked together in 2016.<a href="https://www.insider.com/racist-jokes-microaggressions-and-tokenism-in-the-influencer-world-2020-8">Barry told Insider</a> he stood by Mongeau publicly at the time due to having a collaborative channel together, but voiced his concerns to her in private. He said Mongeau was not receptive of what he had to say, making him feel like she was dismissing him as an "angry Black person.""It was very shocking," Mongeau said of watching the video for the first time. "It's definitely not something I saw coming at all."She said her initial reaction to the internalized shame and anger at what she was watching was to start questioning everything she knew about herself. But instead of facing up to her past, she sought to distract herself from it at parties and gatherings. This, in hindsight, was the catalyst for further harming her relationship with Barry and her fans.<div type="image" title="Tana Mongeau and Kahlen Barry" height="1500" width="2000" msid="78558046" hostid="261"></div>Fans and commentators were left confused by Mongeau's reaction when she promised to address Barry's story then went silent on the matter for weeks on end. Instead of explanations, they saw Mongeau partying — often maskless — on her Instagram story.In one particularly memorable clip, Mongeau and Erika Costell — another ex-girlfriend of Jake Paul — <a href="https://www.popbuzz.com/internet/youtubers/tana-mongeau-erika-costell-coronavirus-party/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">told the camera they "don't f---ing care."</a> What Mongeau and Costell had meant as a reference to old tensions between them was taken as a blatant disregard for public health and their fans' opinions.This also led many to see Mongeau's support of the Black Lives Matter movement as performative, and culminated in many more negative videos about her behavior."It's unfortunate because I look back and I would have handled things so differently now with all of the things that I feel I've learned over this time," Mongeau said. "I just feel like I was in an industry, and still am in an industry, where the normality has always been to handle those situations internally and push things under the rug and not address them head-on."<h2>'That video was a really big wake up call for me'</h2>She said she wished she had reached out to Barry directly as soon as he'd posted his video to apologize; to have a conversation about what really happened between them. But as a very emotionally reactive person, Mongeau couldn't take the pressure and "ran away" from what was happening.She said she didn't see Barry's video any differently to the masses of videos made about her every day, picking apart her mistakes and reminding her when she falls short of people's expectations. She had normalized the negative attention, she said, and had learned to no longer bother watching videos with her name in."It wasn't even until I realized that this situation was very different that I dove into these videos and began to start really watching everything Kahlen was saying and researching stuff," she said. "This was definitely an eyeopening situation, and that video was a really big wake up call for me."She said it was also a mistake to promise videos that she wasn't "in the headspace" to deliver."I was so afraid of people being angry with me," she said. "My entire career, that's what you're taught by everyone in the industry — whenever people are angry at you, the best thing you can do is just try to make people like you again."<div type="image" title="Tana Mongeau" height="1500" width="2000" msid="78558048" hostid="261"></div>When Mongeau finally did post her apology video, it wasn't met with praise. It currently stands at 107,000 dislikes to 39,000 likes and the comments are flooded with criticisms of Mongeau's robotic, emotionless delivery, over-use of jump cuts, and lack of clarity about what she was actually apologizing for.Mongeau said she understands why people were disappointed and frustrated with how she came across, and would rewind to do it all differently if she could. She said it was the one time she really needed to connect with her fans, but she failed."I was so afraid of putting any ounce of emotion into that video," she said. "I wrote out bullet points and I simply read them point-blank with no emotion ... And people did not like that."She said she still stands by everything she said — that she's sorry for her past actions, but she is not a racist person."I just think I could have delivered it in a far better way," she said.<h2>The apology wasn't accepted</h2>Mongeau hasn't spoken to Barry directly yet, which is why <a href="https://www.insider.com/tana-mongeau-apology-video-kahlen-barry-simply-nessa-briella-2020-9" target="_blank" rel="noopener">neither Barry nor Briella accepted her apology</a>. She said she doesn't know if she will reach out because she doesn't know if Barry would want to talk to her, but it is something she thinks about every day."I want to know the right thing to do without stepping on any toes or further upsetting Kahlen, and further angering him in any way," she said. '"I just don't know where we stand and it breaks my heart."Mongeau said she isn't sure Barry wants to hear from her, whether that's in private or a live stream conversation, and is trying to figure out the best "public approach" to "address so many of my angering and frustrating actions." (Barry has told Insider several times he only ever wanted a private apology and was against her making a public video about his accusations.)<div type="image" title="tana mongeau shane" height="720" width="960" msid="78558051" hostid="261"></div>Mongeau said one thing she can do is to show her followers through her actions that "there's not an ounce of me that is micro-aggressively racist.""I know for a fact that is not who I am as a person, and I will continue to clarify that until the day that I die," she said."But if I ever hurt [Barry] in any way, all I want to do is apologize for the pain that I've caused, no matter what. And it's a hard situation to find peace in knowing that someone might always think that no matter what you say."<h2>The endless apology video cycle</h2>Mongeau has posted several apology videos over her YouTube career, and said she wanted to end that cycle of making mistakes and apologizing. She said she would rather address mistakes when she makes them, instead of contributing more apologies into the internet space that people may not take seriously.She said she also understands and validates many of the claims made about her behavior over the last few months."If it wasn't for their voices and the things they were saying to me, I would not have been so hard on myself and actually faced a lot of these things and grown so much," she said."And I understand their frustration with everything I was doing, from partying, to saying videos were going to be out, and then not putting them out, to being emotionless and dry in my actual video, to continuing to just be frustrating."She said her focus is now on building the trust with her audience back by trying to be the best role model possible, rather than "someone that's known as just problematic." Part of that is going to be sharing the journey she's been on with a therapist in upcoming videos."It was having life coaches come in, it was struggles with sobriety, it was a terrible unearthing of so many demons and it's been just very ... not cute," she said. "A lot of the things [my followers] were calling me out for, I was realizing at that time."<h2>Being a better role model</h2>For the first five years of her career, Mongeau refused to take on the title of a role model. She now realizes there came a point where it's wasn't her choice anymore, and she can no longer ignore that she is an influence on millennials and Gen Z. Part of coming to terms with that is learning about herself and her flaws, she said."I think this situation taught me a lot about myself and the way I've always so explosively handled problems like that," she said. "I've always handled situations like this incorrectly, and this was definitely the moment where all of that kind of came to a head and I realized that I didn't want to continue to live my life like that."Whatever happens, Mongeau said she wants to come from a place of complete honesty from now on, which includes talking more about her mental health and taking responsibility for her actions during "downfalls or nights where I am my absolute worst.""It's not my place to expect or ask forgiveness," she said. The two, who are both Black, said that Mongeau and Worona exhibited <a href="https://www.insider.com/tana-mongeau-racist-tweets-allegations-response-to-her-past-2020-7">a pattern of racist microaggressions</a> — brief and commonplace actions that either intentionally or unintentionally communicate aggressive attitudes toward marginalized groups — toward them. Barry co-starred with Mongeau on a collaborative channel called Trash, and in his 2020 exposé, he described Mongeau lying about him to people in the YouTube community behind his back and leveraging negative stereotypes about Black men against him in the wake of her own N-word scandals.In June, Barry invited Mongeau to have a live discussion with him about his experiences with her, but after exchanging a few DMs, Mongeau stopped responding to him. Tana Mongeau's MTV show 'No Filter' will not return for a third season

But as many commentators and <keyword id="860150" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="YouTubers">YouTubers</keyword> have pointed out, Star has been starting new chapters periodically throughout his entire career.</li><li>While he claimed to be taking responsibility for his past, Star left out a lot of specifics in his <keyword id="3329321" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="apology-video">apology video</keyword>, including the main accusations against him and Shane Dawson from Tati Westbrook, his problematic past, and the end to his partnership with makeup brand Morphe.</li></ul>Jeffree Star <a href="https://www.insider.com/jeffree-star-new-video-about-shane-dawson-james-charles-accusations-2020-7" target="_blank" rel="noopener">returned to the internet</a> after a four-week hiatus with a 10-minute apology video. He vaguely apologized to James Charles for all the drama over the past year and claimed he was taking accountability for his actions and "reflecting" on his own behavior.The video, called "<a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hOuwNiCa-zU" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Doing What's Right</a>," was Star's chance to face up to many of the accusations, both past and present, that have been flying around social media over the last few weeks. But while he did say he wanted to take responsibility and put it all behind him, there are plenty of things he didn't mention at all.Here's everything Star didn't address in the video.<h2>1. Calling James Charles a 'danger to society'</h2>After Tati Westbrook posted <a href="https://www.insider.com/james-charles-tati-westbrook-feud-2019-5" target="_blank" rel="noopener">her "Bye Sister" video in May last year</a>, where she called out James Charles for advertising a rival vitamin brand to her own and accused him of behaving inappropriately around straight men, Star inserted himself into the drama with a string of tweets. He called Charles a "danger to society" and a "predator" in the thread he has now deleted, which helped catalyze Charles' loss of 3 million subscribers.Star promised the world that he would provide "receipts" for Charles' apparent predatory behavior, but subsequently posted a video called "<a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ss1eJIzjRlE" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Never Doing This Again.</a>" where he said he was removing himself from the drama. What followed was a confusing few months of contradictory behavior from Star — publicly congratulating Charles on his success one minute, then further perpetuating rumors about him the next.In April, nearly a full year after Star said he was done with the beauty war, <a href="https://www.insider.com/jeffree-star-james-charles-victim-keemstar-tati-westbrook-shane-dawson-2020-4" target="_blank" rel="noopener">he appeared on Keemstar and FaZe Banks' podcast</a> and claimed to have a voice note from an alleged sexual victim of Charles that he said proved he had reason to send the tweets in the first place. It was later revealed he never ended up playing the voice note to them, so its existence remains in question.<div type="image" title="Jeffree Star James Charles" height="778" width="1037" msid="77073324" hostid="261"></div>In his latest video, Star once again distanced himself from the drama he helped create by saying he would not be showing texts or voice notes to "expose" anyone. He then shifted the blame again, and said he let people "gas me up" behind the scenes."Did I not just simply call James Charles and ask questions myself? 100%," he said. "And that is my fault. I would like to personally apologize to James Charles for the words I've said and my actions."Commentary and beauty YouTuber Smokey Glow <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hx-wvBgdDRk" target="_blank" rel="noopener">said in a response video</a> that if Star was truly sorry to Charles, he would have cleared his name. "If you're apologizing to him, that implies to me you don't think he's guilty of the things you accused him of," she said. "So if you don't think he's guilty of the things you accused him of, why are you not making that abundantly clear? Why is that not being made crystal clear to everyone who you have cast doubt upon with this possible information?"<h2>2. Taking any responsibility for his problematic past</h2>While Charles was offered an apology, Star has never directly addressed two female Black creators, Jackie Aina and MakeupShayla, who claim he made <a href="https://www.teenvogue.com/story/jeffree-star-racist-jackie-aina" target="_blank" rel="noopener">derogatory, racist</a>, and <a href="https://bglh-marketplace.com/2016/05/jeffree-star-threatens-to-beat-up-beauty-guru-makeupshayla/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">threatening statements</a> towards them.Over the years Star has been filmed <a href="https://twitter.com/asieymomo/status/1278087988283494400" target="_blank" rel="noopener">hurling racist slurs</a> and <a href="https://twitter.com/makeupbylevi/status/1276126512454922240" target="_blank" rel="noopener">being violent</a> on several occasions. One video even seems to show Star and a friend <a href="https://twitter.com/Summer9022/status/1278152807418408963" target="_blank" rel="noopener">belittling and abusing a vulnerable intoxicated man</a> as he tries to leave their house. Some of this he <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Su6FeI7lHVg" target="_blank" rel="noopener">apologized for in a video in 2017</a>, but he didn't go into any specifics.Like this current installment, many said the apology was empty and simply not good enough. Tea channel Def Noodles, for example, <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1O0gliMLCv0" target="_blank" rel="noopener">called the whole thing a "publicity stunt"</a> and highlighted how Star's words probably can't be trusted.Smokey Glow <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hx-wvBgdDRk" target="_blank" rel="noopener">called Star's video a "non-apology"</a> because all it did was "allow his stans to continue to support him." He said just enough for them to be able to say he'd addressed the drama, she said, and could now continue behaving exactly how he did before."I don't know what I expected from this apology video," she said. "I don't know what I was thinking was going to happen ... But I was definitely expecting more, and a better response than this."Adam McIntyre <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5xgPP4hkHZg" target="_blank" rel="noopener">went through every statement</a> Star made in the video, emphasizing how he was trying to make himself out to be the victim."Stop trying to pen a narrative that you're this innocent person," he said.Star further diverted viewers away from his own scandals by scolding them for not focusing enough on the issues going on in the world, like the coronavirus pandemic, Black Lives Matter movement, and the deaths of Black trans women."Breonna Taylor still has no justice. Black trans women are being murdered every day and the news is silent. Elijah McClain has no justice, and the countless other people who are murdered every single day while everyone just goes about their business while it's happening," he said. "It's really time to reflect on the big picture."Creators such as D'Angelo Wallace criticized Star for using the deaths of Black people as a distraction from his controversies."This isn't performative activism, this is hijack-tivism," Wallace <a href="https://twitter.com/dangelno/status/1284663846570020864" target="_blank" rel="noopener">wrote on Twitter</a>.<h2>3. Tati Westbrook's claims of gaslighting and manipulation</h2>Star didn't mention Tati Westbrook in the entire video, but did allude to the things she said in her explosive video, released in June, that <a href="https://www.insider.com/shane-dawson-tati-westbrook-video-jeffree-star-drama-timeline-cancelled-2020-6" target="_blank" rel="noopener">dredged up the past</a>. Westbrook <a href="https://www.insider.com/tati-westbrook-video-jeffree-star-shane-dawson-manipulated-james-charles-2020-6" target="_blank" rel="noopener">said in her video</a> that Star and Shane Dawson "used, coerced, and manipulated" her into kickstarting <keyword id="9142319" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="dramageddon">Dramageddon</keyword> 2.0 and Charles' demise in May 2019 as a means of publicity for their upcoming docu-series and eyeshadow palette.She also said the whole community should prepare themselves for what Star would release when he started having to answer for his own behavior. Star denied this, in a roundabout way, in his video."Today, once again, I will not be exposing anyone," he said. "For everyone saying 'Jeffree's going to be coming with the receipts and we all need to get ready to forgive,' that is the opposite of who I am."He did not mention the Conspiracy series with Dawson or any of Westbrook's claims directly."I will not be entertaining it," he said. "Now did Shane and I get caught up in the drama and do some dumb s---? Of course we did."Again, Star didn't confirm or deny what Westbrook said about feeding her lies about Charles.He also didn't mention the controversy surrounding Dawson, whose name is now associated with <a href="https://www.insider.com/jaden-smith-jada-pinkett-shame-shane-dawson-willow-smith-masturbation-video-2020-6" target="_blank" rel="noopener">sexualizing children</a> and <a href="https://www.insider.com/shane-dawson-cat-sexual-assault-apology-2019-3" target="_blank" rel="noopener">animals</a>, dressing in blackface, and using racial slurs."That is my best friend, and I was truly shocked that people thought I was going to distance myself from him or that my silence was anything but support," he said. "I know the amazing person that he is today and you don't abandon your friends."<h2>5. The end of his business with Morphe</h2>Morphe, the makeup brand which Star has worked closely with for many years, recently <a href="https://www.insider.com/morphe-cuts-ties-jeffree-star-cosmetics-backlash-drama-shane-dawson-2020-7" target="_blank" rel="noopener">cut ties with him</a>. First <a href="https://www.insider.com/morphe-removes-shane-dawson-makeup-range-from-online-store-2020-6" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Dawson's Conspiracy line was removed</a> from the online store, then the company announced it would "cease all commercial activity related to Jeffree Star and affiliated products."Star did not mention this, but focused attention on his success instead. He said what he achieved, growing into a beauty mogul after working in a mall once upon a time, would inspire others."Jeffree Star Cosmetics will never be slowing down," he said. "And I am so excited for everything that's coming for the rest of 2020."<h2>His apologies are wearing thin with followers</h2>Star is skilled at saying all the right things, and most likely has a whole team of publicists behind him helping him through whatever dramas he finds himself in. But it seems his words are wearing thin, particularly for people of color in the YouTube community.Kahlen Barry, who has called out racism in the influencer industry, <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vhyaaYfAE04" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reacted to the video in a livestream</a>. He said people shouldn't even bother watching the video at all, because it didn't feel like an apology."Don't even give this man a click," he said. "It just felt very passive-aggressive. He didn't want to be saying s---. He was sitting there like he didn't even want to address any of the things he was talking about, and he was being forced to. He just had this, 'I have somewhere else to be' kind of vibe."A common theme in all of Star's apologies over the years is how he says he is closing a chapter on the past and he's learned and grown from his mistakes. Over the last weekend of August, she <a href="https://www.insider.com/adele-bantu-knots-jamaican-flag-bikini-cultural-appropriation-photo-reactions-2020-8">posted a tribute to Notting Hill Carnival</a> — which was was <a href="https://www.theguardian.com/culture/2020/aug/30/notting-hill-carnival-online-is-more-relevant-than-ever-says-director">held online this year</a> due to the <a href="https://www.insider.com/category/coronavirus">coronavirus</a> pandemic — wearing bantu knots and a Jamaican flag bikini top."Adele accused of cultural appropriation over Instagram picture," <a href="https://www.theguardian.com/music/2020/sep/01/adele-accused-of-cultural-appropriation-over-instagram-picture" target="_blank" rel="noopener">wrote the Guardian</a>, while <a href="https://www.express.co.uk/showbiz/tv-radio/1329766/Piers-Morgan-rant-Adele-controversy-backlash-cultural-appropriation-GMB-ITV-video" target="_blank" rel="noopener">the Daily Express</a> went for: "Piers Morgan rages at cultural appropriation mob over Adele controversy."However, the words underneath Adele's photo tell a different story. Rather than an angry "mob," Caribbean people flooded the comments telling her to ignore the backlash because what she was really doing was appreciating Jamaican culture, not appropriating it."Tell the haters to step off!" one commenter wrote. "You are a product of Multicultural Britain, so it's not cultural appropriation."Another fan said that "we Jamaicans love you" and there was "no cultural appropriation here.""Thanks for honoring us and highlighting the powerful influence Jamaican culture has in the UK and around the world!" they said. "We have your back on this one all the way!!! 'Out Of Many One People' is our nation's motto and we live it! If you come with love and respect, Jamaica has love for you!"<div type="image" title="black lives matter protests " height="1666" width="2222" msid="77947596" hostid="261"></div>Branding expert Carole Pyke, who works with companies to help build acceptance and normalize representation of people of color, said she didn't see Adele's photo through the eyes of cultural appropriation."At a time when the August tradition of carnival on the streets of Notting Hill was canceled, I saw it as a woman celebrating the carnival vibe with its freedom and vibrancy," she told Insider. "A reminder to us all that even though life, as we know it, has changed we can still choose how we navigate our way through it."The appropriation vs. appreciation debate has been going on for years, but it is particularly prevalent right now amid the growing <keyword id="2771111" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="black-lives-matter">Black Lives Matter</keyword> movement. People who have been oppressed are speaking out against racism and prejudice louder than ever, so it's particularly obvious when a predominantly white company, group, or individual enjoys or profits off other <keyword id="381424" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Cultures">cultures</keyword> without standing up for the lives of people of color.<h2>Cultural appropriation or appreciation?</h2>Saurav Dutt, the author of "<a href="https://www.amazon.co.uk/Butterfly-Room-Saurav-Dutt/dp/1981050493/ref=tmm_pap_swatch_0?_encoding=UTF8&amp;qid=&amp;sr=&amp;sr=" target="_blank" rel="noopener">The Butterfly Room,</a>" which explores racism and interracial relationships within Indian society, told Insider that enjoying something and being fascinated by it doesn't mean you are appropriating it."Cultural appropriation arises when people, anyone, takes aspects of another culture specifically to mock or disrespect them," he said. "What seems to draw the ire of cultural appropriation activists are the less respectful instances where someone will use an item from another culture to ridicule or patronize the other group."For cofounder of The Rum Kitchen Stevie Thomas, who was previously a "Shipwrecked" contestant, the cultural appropriation conversation hits home. He <a href="https://metro.co.uk/2019/07/17/mixed-up-money-and-schooling-opens-doors-but-ive-always-been-an-underdog-because-of-my-race-10347655/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">talked to Metro in 2019</a> about growing up around mostly white middle-class people in Notting Hill, and how he struggled to connect to his identity of having a heritage that's half Welsh, a quarter Jamaican, one-eighth Irish, and one-eighth Portuguese. Opening up The Rum Kitchen in London was his way of finally connecting to his roots.Thomas told Insider the difference between taking advantage and appreciating a culture ultimately comes down to where your heart sits."Adele appreciates and loves the culture. You can feel her heart has always been in the right place," he said. "Black culture has been used, abused, and rehashed for a white marketplace way before Adele's hair, Elvis's hip-shaking, and Eminem's lyrical flow."The problem starts when greed gets in the way of giving back to certain communities and cultures, such as when restaurant investors who originally intended to appreciate and celebrate end up caring more about money."The difference is what happens next," Thomas said. "You can appreciate the music, the <keyword id="15482" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="lifestyle">lifestyle</keyword>, the love of the people — but appropriating is where you take the influences you see and completely copy them for your own gain."<h2>Kim Kardashian's 'Bo Derek braids'</h2>Natalie Rita, the managing director of PR company NRPR, works with many POC influencers on a daily basis. She told Insider appropriation happens if you show love and appreciation for parts of a culture, such as clothing, hairstyles, or accessories, but remain prejudiced against its people. For example, wearing African braids or a Hindu bindi while spending no time educating yourself about their origins or the culture surrounding them is "picking and choosing which part of a culture you want to participate in," she said."In a nutshell, people need to know whether they're respecting a culture or ripping them off," Rita said. "People need to ask themselves: 'Do I understand the significance of what I'm doing here?,' 'Am I honoring this culture or just imitating it?,' and most importantly, 'Will I offend anyone who belongs to this culture?'"The Kardashians are often criticized for wearing their hair in Black styles without really acknowledging where they came from. Kim Kardashian, for example, <a href="https://www.insider.com/kim-kardashian-cultural-appropriation-accusations-bo-derek-braids-2018-1" target="_blank" rel="noopener">called her cornrows "Bo Derek braids"</a> — a reference to the actresses' hairstyle when she played Jenny Hanley the 1979 film "10."<div type="image" title="Kim Kardashian corn rows" height="1500" width="2000" msid="77947599" hostid="261"></div>Bayo Adelaja, a diversity and inclusion expert, is the leader of <a href="https://www.doitnownow.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Do it Now Now</a>, an organization "committed to bringing social empowerment to Black communities across the globe." She told Insider Kardashian's comments made it sound like Black people hadn't been wearing braids for decades before Derek's character came along."[It] reminded people that despite profiting off of Black culture for all of her career, she doesn't care about it at all," she said. "When Zendaya wore Locks on the red carpet, she was denigrated by a style guru on the E! channel, but when Kendall Jenner wears Locks on a runway, the style is chic and fashion-forward."In the real world, this can translate to a Black woman wearing her hair naturally, only for it to be called "unprofessional," "ghetto," or "too ethnic," Adelaja said, then when a white person does it, it's lauded as cool and edgy.Natalie J Monty and her sister run an Instagram haircare page for Black and multiracial women and girls called <a href="https://www.instagram.com/got.coils/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">@got.coils</a>. The sisters, who are from London, set up the page in 2019 as a way to celebrate natural hair and give advice about how to style it.Monty told Insider she has seen a great deal of cultural appropriation of African hairstyles from European brands and individuals since then, claiming many styles and looks as their own. She's also seen European women think they are being innovative for wearing wigs to grow out their hair, or silk wraps to protect it at night."That's actually something that many Black and Asian women have been doing for, I'd say, definitely over 100 years," she said. "It's something that's been taught from past generations ... So it makes women of color feel uncomfortable at times."<h2>Context and upbringing matters</h2>Adelaja said the context also matters in how things are worn. Rita Ora, for example, <a href="https://www.insider.com/rita-ora-race-blackfishing-twitter-realizes-parents-white-albanian-2020-8" target="_blank" rel="noopener">received backlash for "Black-fishing"</a> with her looks when people found out she is white Albanian/Estonian with no Black heritage. However, she was brought up in an area of London which had a high population of Black people and rose to fame when artists such as Beyonce, Cardi B, Nicki Minaj, and Rihanna were dominating pop music.Ora had grown up with Black culture, so it made sense it would become part of her style. Cultural appropriation, on the other hand, is like wearing someone else's heritage as a costume, "as if you were trying to tap into some alter ego or reverse some otherworldly version of yourself," Adelaja said."They are doing it to stand out from the crowd in their own context of life," she said. "That is when a culture becomes a trend or a fad. That is hurtful to those who come across the actions of those individuals because it devalues their culture and turns it into something that is only valuable as an accessory."<div type="image" title="Kahlen Barry" height="720" width="960" msid="77947601" hostid="261"></div>It's also important to match your intentions to your actions. Influencer and musician Kahlen Barry recently spoke out about how his ex-friend Tana Mongeau treated him when they worked together, <a href="https://www.insider.com/tana-mongeau-racist-tweets-allegations-response-to-her-past-2020-7" target="_blank" rel="noopener">accusing her of gaslighting and racist microaggressions</a>.He told Insider Mongeau doesn't address accusations of racism in her past, but then profits off Black culture by making rap and hip hop music. He said this is a huge problem within the music and entertainment industries."You're disrespecting our people, but then you're making music that comes from our community," he said. When influencers posted statements that weren't deemed sufficient, many apologized.</li></ul>On <keyword id="819905" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Instagram">Instagram</keyword>, every imaginable niche has its own influencers. Now, as protests over the killing of George Floyd <a href="https://www.insider.com/george-floyd-death-15-powerful-images-of-nationwide-protests-2020-5">roil the US</a>, followers are demanding that influencers of all stripes with large platforms acknowledge the political climate. That includes people who like to shop at the grocery chain <keyword id="1641766" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Trader-Joes">Trader Joe's</keyword>.Natasha Fischer has <a href="https://www.buzzfeednews.com/article/tanyachen/woman-behind-popular-trader-joes-instagram-account">built up an audience</a> of more than 1.1 million followers for "@traderjoeslist" by shopping at Trader Joe's, taking pictures of items there, and posting about them on Instagram. Unlike in past protests that gained national attention and spurred responses from influencers and celebrities, activists and protesters involved in the Floyd demonstrations are aggressively calling out inaction in digital spaces, and demanding that those with large platforms use them to boost their cause, regardless of what they normally talk about. People who have stayed silent or made missteps have quickly faced backlash severe enough to prompt public apologies. It's representative of both the explosive current moment and evolving stances on <keyword id="6355064" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="Celebrity">celebrity</keyword> worship and online conduct. Now, having a platform, even a relatively small one compared to A-list celebrities and influencers, carries an expectation. Fans are in control of their favorite influencer's destiny, and the message is clear: Use your platform to support Black Lives Matter, and do so quickly and meaningfully, or lose followers. <h2>YouTubers, TikTokers, and teen celebrities appear to bear the brunt of these new expectations, especially given their young, diverse, and highly-engaged audiences.</h2>The day before Floyd's killing, YouTuber Tana Mongeau <a href="https://www.insider.com/influencers-does-tana-mongeau-uncensored-ashly-schwan-join-have-onlyfans-2020-5">launched an OnlyFans</a> account to sell nude and lewd content to her fanbase. Mongeau, who has 5.4 million Instagram followers, is not usually a very political person. Her brand is being a messy high school dropout <a href="https://www.insider.com/youtuber-tana-mongeau-interview-paris-hilton-gen-z-playlist-live-2020-3">whose explicit antics</a> entertain predominantly teenage girls. On Saturday, as <a href="https://www.insider.com/george-floyd-death-15-powerful-images-of-nationwide-protests-2020-5">fires raged</a> across the country, Mongeau posted a slideshow of herself smoking weed, half-undressed, and posing in designer clothing in a splashy LA home. In the caption, she promoted her OnlyFans. It was a very on-brand post for Mongeau, and her audience was furious. Immediately underneath a few complimentary comments from friends, the backlash is clear. "So you STILL won't talk about what is happening in your own words? I am disappointed in you and not sure if I should be a fan," one commenter said. "people are dying tuna," another noted. "pls speak out about the protests tana this is embarrassing :(" pleaded one commenter. On <keyword id="6354616" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="Twitter">Twitter</keyword>, a micro-influencer and real-life friend of Mongeau shared an open letter that received more than 2,000 likes calling on Mongeau to support Black Lives Matter. The backlash resulted in Mongeau completely re-branding across platforms to change her various display names to "Black Lives Matter," posting various messages of support for the movement, explaining her white privilege, and linking to resources, petitions, and ways to donate. For her fans, it was crucial that Mongeau seize the current political movement and stand up for her Black friends, peers, and followers. She quickly and enthusiastically gave into the demands, and so have most of the influencers and celebrities who were criticized. Notably, the Kardashian and Jenner sisters turned comments off on their posts, which came days after the protests had started, anticipating even more backlash after it took days to craft their statements. Despite not having a sizeable impact on the actual protests, it's important for many teenagers who are digitally engaged to see their progressive views reflected in the people they follow. For "stan" communities, or accounts that are entirely devoted to a celebrity or influencer of the person's choice, these pro-Black Lives Matter statements are crucial to the reputation of not only the influencer but of their own fans. For "stans," their own identities are wrapped up in the people that they admire. A post from Mongeau may not instill any real change, but it gives her fans a sense of security that they are doing the right thing by continuing to support her. On "@tiktokroom," an Instagram page dedicated to chronicling and discussing the drama of famous TikTokers, a post asked the account's nearly 700,000 followers to discuss which influencers were surprisingly silent about the protests. The responses reveal that the teen-skewing audience of famous TikTokers wants more from the people who entertain them on the app beyond their TikTok content. "Bhad bhabie since she wants to steal our <keyword id="24504" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="culture">culture</keyword> so bad," is one top response, referring to white 17-year-old rapper and "Dr. Phil" alum Danielle Bregoli, AKA Bhad Bhabie, who <a href="https://www.insider.com/bhad-bhabie-blackfishing-tarzan-instagram-live-2020-4">has been criticized</a> for Black cultural appropriation. "none cause it's all expected " says another top response, followed by "everybody who hasn't said anything."And while Fischer of "@traderjoeslist" may not have devoted "stan" accounts, it's clear that embracing causes like Black Lives Matter is crucial to widespread success – unless you have a majority conservative audience, or an audience that would otherwise respond poorly to your support of Black Lives Matter.But among apolitical accounts, the expectation to support Black lives is the loudest majority opinion. For proponents of the cause, this isn't meaningless. It suggests that among mainstream influencers and celebrities, it is no longer an easy option to stay silent. Compared to Black Lives Matter protests of past years, this expectation has only grown. <h2>For a celebrity with a strong online following, fans expect more than just a blasé attitude about the protests.</h2>Both Fischer and Mongeau are white female examples of the Black Lives Matter influencer backlash on social media, but even Black musician and Twitter personality Lil Nas X apologized for not speaking out sooner. "i honestly feel as though it has become so normalized that even i myself am numb to police brutality towards black people," Lil Nas X, whose real name is Montero Lamar Hill, wrote. Initially, he linked to a widely-circulated <a href="https://www.change.org/p/mayor-jacob-frey-justice-for-george-floyd?source_location=discover_feed">Change.org petition</a> that has over 10 million signatures and argued that the four officers involved in Floyd's death should be fired (they were) and that charges should be filed (ex-officer Derek Chauvin, who knelt on Floyd's neck, <a href="https://www.startribune.com/protests-build-anew-after-fired-officer-charged-jailed/570869672/">has been charged</a> with third-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter). Hill also linked to the Minnesota Freedom Fund, a widely-shared bail fund for Minneapolis protesters. Many influencers and celebrities are donating and directing fans to donate to bail funds (which has inspired some on the right to push back against those donating, claiming the funds empower violence and riots). But what Hill did next was even more popular than just his initial statements of support.Hill went on to advise his 4.7 million Twitter followers to wear protective eyewear at protests. He pointed out specific examples of police escalating violence among peaceful protesters and defended those protesting. He helped rationalize why protesters were angry, writing "this riot/protest situation is the same as a child being bullied at school. you are silent while they are being mistreated but upset when they finally snap back. had u spoke up while they were being mistreated they wouldn't have had to snap back. silence equals complicity."By engaging with the issues his followers cared about in such great detail, Hill proved that he wasn't just posting to avoid hate; he actually cares about Black Lives Matter, a cause that digitally-engaged teens across the US are resonating with in huge numbers.
