She was known for her pugnacious fights with editors as well as filmmakers.<br /><br />In the late 1970s, Kael had a very brief tenure working as a consultant for Paramount, a position she accepted at the behest of actor <keyword id="25157" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="warren-beatty" source="Orion">Warren Beatty</keyword>. The timing of that Paramount job seems to coincide with the setting of the script -- and the filmmaker is known to have a deep respect for Kael, making the odds of her being the subject of the film more likely.<br /><br />Tarantino has for two decades commanded the ability to attract the most coveted actors, working with Leonardo DiCaprio and Brad Pitt two times each. He directed Christoph Waltz to two Oscar wins. Samuel L. Jackson is a frequent collaborator. If this truly is his final film, he will have no shortage of thespians dropping everything to line up for roles.<br /><br />The filmmaker has long maintained he had a finite number of movies in him, saying he wanted to direct 10 films or retire by the time he was 60. Details are sparse, but the movie is expected to be released in 2025.</p><p>Here's everything we know, so far.</p><h2>Is this <em>really</em> going to be Tarantino's last film?</h2><div type="image" title="Quentin Tarantino with his award for best original screenplay for &quot;Django Unchained&quot; at the 2013 Oscars." height="1888" width="2788" msid="107372874" hostid="261" sizebytes="91970"></div><p>For more than a decade, Tarantino has declared that he wants to stop directing films after his 10th movie. According to the filmmaker, he's concerned that the quality of his projects could decline if he continues for too long.</p><p>"In a fanciful world, 10 movies in my filmography would be nice," he told <a target="_blank" href="https://www.theguardian.com/film/2012/nov/16/quentin-tarantino-hints-retirement">Playboy</a> magazine in 2012.</p><p>"I just don't want to be an old-man filmmaker," he said. "Directors don't get better as they get older. Usually, the worst films in their filmography are those last four at the end."</p><p>The award-winning director and screenwriter <a target="_blank" href="https://deadline.com/2014/11/quentin-tarantino-retirement-hateful-eight-international-release-1201280583/">elaborated</a> two years later, saying that he'd prefer to retire on a high note.</p><p>"I don't believe you should stay onstage until people are begging you to get off," he said. "I like the idea of leaving them wanting a bit more. I do think directing is a young man's game, and I like the idea of an umbilical cord connection from my first to my last movie."</p><p>"If I get to the 10th, do a good job and don't screw it up, well that sounds like a good way to end the old career," he said, adding that he's not opposed to coming out of retirement for a good movie, but he's also content to stop while he's ahead.</p><p>During a 2019 <a target="_blank" href="https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/general-news/quentin-tarantino-says-his-10th-final-film-will-be-epilogue-y-1230249/">press conference</a> for Once Upon a Time in Hollywood," Tarantino said that he's envisioned his final movie as "a little more epilogue-y."</p><p>Tarantino has stood by his comments, telling <a target="_blank" href="https://www.cnn.com/2022/11/18/entertainment/quentin-tarantino-movie-10-last-one-hollywood-film/index.html">CNN's Chris Wallace</a> in 2022 that he's ready to "wrap up the show."</p><p>"I don't want to become this old man who's out of touch," he said. "Already I'm feeling a bit like an old man out of touch when it comes to the current movies that are out right now."</p><p>How steadfast Tarantino is in his decision to retire from filmmaking remains to be seen. After all, directors before him — like <a target="_blank" href="https://www.nytimes.com/2017/08/10/movies/logan-lucky-steven-soderbergh-interview.html">Steven Soderbergh</a>, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.indiewire.com/features/general/david-lynch-retirement-filmmaking-1201832700/">David Lynch</a>, and <a target="_blank" href="https://www.forbes.com/sites/danidiplacido/2024/01/15/how-many-times-has-hayao-miyazaki-retired/">Hayao Miyazaki</a> — have un-retired or walked back comments after making grand declarations.</p><h2>The movie is inspired by a real-life film critic who worked for a pornography magazine</h2><p>When "The Movie Critic" was first reported to be in the works back in March, the premise was a little bit different. At the time, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/movies/movie-news/quentin-tarantino-sets-the-movie-critic-final-movie-1235351260/">The Hollywood Reporter</a> reported that the film would be set in Los Angeles in the 1970s and center on a female character. The publication also implied that Pauline Kael, who wrote film reviews for The New Yorker and died in 2001, inspired the premise.</p><p>During an interview with <a target="_blank" href="https://deadline.com/2023/05/quentin-tarantino-new-movie-cannes-breaking-baz-rolling-thunder-1235379542/">Deadline</a> at Cannes in May 2023, Tarantino said that the movie takes place in California in 1977.</p><p>But contradictory to THR's report, Tarantino said the titular character "is based on a guy who really lived, but was never really famous, and he used to write movie reviews for a porno rag."</p><p>Tarantino described the person who inspired the movie as "cynical as hell" and "very funny" in his writing. At the time of the interview, the filmmaker ruled out Leonardo DiCaprio and Pitt as the leads, saying they were too old for the part. The real-life critic died in his late 30s.</p><p>"I haven't decided yet but it's going to be somebody in the 35-year-old ballpark," he told Deadline. It's unclear if the actor will play the lead role or another character, though Deadline suspects it's the former.</p><p>This marks Tarantino and Pitt's third collaboration. Pitt previously portrayed Lieutenant Aldo Raine in the 2009 movie "Inglourious Basterds" and stuntman Cliff Booth in the 2019 film "Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood" — which earned him his first <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/oscars-2020-nominations-winners-list-2020-1">Oscar</a> for acting.</p><h2>There's no release date yet</h2><p>According to <a target="_blank" href="https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/movies/movie-news/brad-pitt-circling-role-in-quentin-tarantino-movie-critic-1235812995/">The Hollywood Reporter</a>, filming will begin in 2024 or early 2025 in hopes of a 2025 release. <ul class="summary-list"><li><keyword id="11920875" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="utah" source="Orion">Utah</keyword> Democrats voted to back independent <keyword id="13262836" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="evan-mcmullin" source="Orion">Evan McMullin</keyword> for Senate over one of their own party members.</li><li>At Saturday's Utah Democratic Convention, McMullin received 782 votes to Kael Weston's 594 votes</li></ul><p>In an extraordinary decision, Utah Democrats on Saturday voted to support independent candidate Evan McMullin for Senate over Democrat Kael Weston, part of an effort to create momentum to oust Republican Sen. <keyword id="13262833" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="mike-lee" source="Orion">Mike Lee</keyword> from office in November.</p><p>By declining to put forth a Democratic candidate this fall, Utah Democrats are angling themselves to have greater influence in the general election, where their party has not won a Senate race in the conservative state since 1970.</p><p>At the Utah Democratic Convention, McMullin received 782 votes to Weston's 594 votes; the motion to opt for McMullin's independent candidacy versus the candidacy by Weston passed with 57% of the vote, <a href="https://convention.utahdemocrats.org/preliminary-results/">per preliminary results</a>.</p><p>McMullin — an ex-CIA officer who unsuccessfully sought the presidency in 2016, receiving nearly 22% of the vote against former President <keyword id="11914386" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="donald-trump" source="Orion">Donald Trump</keyword> and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton in Utah — lauded the decision.</p><p>"Democrats are putting country over party," McMullin said after the vote. "This is our democracy and, yes, it can be messy at times as we saw today, but it's sure a heck of a lot better than the alternative."</p><p>Lee on Saturday <a href="https://www.sltrib.com/news/politics/2022/04/23/utah-republican/">won</a> the support of roughly 75 percent of the delegates at the Republican convention. In June, he will face former state Rep. Becky Edwards and Ally Isom — a former spokesperson for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints — in a GOP primary.</p><p>Both Edwards and Isom <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/mike-lee-trump-utah-republican-resistance-lds-term-limits-2022-2">have called for fresh leadership</a> and chided Lee for his rhetoric, arguing that he has not helped improve the governing climate in Washington, DC.</p><p>"Utahns are tired of divisiveness, ineffectiveness, and the extreme rhetoric Lee is so often known to deploy," <a href="https://www.deseret.com/opinion/2022/1/28/22879056/utah-senate-mike-lee-campaign-captain-moroni-donald-trump-bagels">Edwards wrote in Deseret News</a> in January, adding that "<keyword id="11893346" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="politics" source="Orion">politics</keyword> should not be about sowing division, a cult of personality or staunch obstructionism." </p><p>McMullin on Saturday attacked Lee for being entangled in the debate over the <keyword id="12175515" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="2020-presidential-election" source="Orion">2020 presidential election</keyword>, which Trump continues to say was fraudulent despite <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/trump-campaign-lawsuits-election-results-2020-11">no verifiable evidence</a> of widespread malfeasance.</p><p>"We know that Sen. Mike Lee was quite involved in the effort to overturn our democracy," McMullin told reporters after the vote, blasting the Republican lawmaker over his text messages to then-White House chief of staff Mark Meadows regarding the 2020 presidential election results.</p><p>Lee last week <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/mike-lee-texts-january-6-trump-alternate-electors-wasnt-encouraging-2022-4">vehemently denied</a> that he encouraged state legislators to submit alternate pro-Trump electors ahead of January 6, 2021, when the certification of the Electoral College results was set to take place at the US Capitol.</p><p>"We have got to take a stand as Utahns," McMullin said on Saturday. "I don't care if you're a Democrat or or an independent or a Republican or a member of the United Utah Party, this is a line that cannot be crossed, our right to hold our leaders accountable and to vote for or against them and have a peaceful transition of power is essential for liberty and justice in America."</p><p>He emphasized: "We cannot compromise on that, and we must all be united to defend it."</p><p>While Weston's supporters sought to block state Democrats from backing McMullin, they were unable to stop the faction of party members who wanted a different approach.</p><p>After the vote, Weston praised delegates for the "important" debate, which he contended "wouldn't have happened if we hadn't had a Democrat make the case."</p><p>"Of course you want to be the candidate that walks out with a unanimous degree of support, but I knew this was always going to be an important conversation to have," he said in thanking his supporters. "It was a real conversation. It was loud and unpredictable, and I accept what delegates have decided to do."</p><p>Prominent state Democrats, including former Rep. Ben McAdams and Salt Lake County Mayor Jenny Wilson, played key roles in pushing their fellow party members to support McMullin.</p><p>The moderate United Utah Party — which has also backed McMullin — commended state Democrats for their decision.</p><p>"We applaud the courage and wisdom of the <keyword id="12134721" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="democratic-party" source="Orion">Democratic Party</keyword> in setting aside party loyalty and putting the needs of Utah first," chairwoman Hillary Stirling said in a statement. The most recent was a 7-foot sculpture pictured on a beach in the UK. </li></ul><p>Since early November, people across the world have been stumbling across mysterious metallic monoliths. The first was found in <a href="https://www.insider.com/monolith-timeline-appearances-disappearances-californai-utah-romania-2020-12#the-first-monolith-was-discovered-in-utah-on-november-18-1">Utah followed by another in Romania</a>, which quickly and mysteriously disappeared.</p><p>The origins of the monoliths remain a mystery, but since the first sighting, people have inevitably called back to Stanley Kubrick's seminal 1968 film "2001: A Space Odyssey," which features a series of monoliths as a sign of extraterrestrial life.</p><p>And Joy Cuff, who worked with Stanley Kubrick on "2001: A Space Odyssey" as a visual effects artist, told Insider that the recent discoveries "would've blown" the legendary director's mind.</p><p>"Stanley would've been really quite excited about this I'm sure," Cuff told Insider during a phone call earlier this week. "It would've been amazing. Imagine this had arisen when we were doing this in '66 or '67. I think it would've blown his mind actually. He was interested in it," but Joy said she finds the discoveries "kind of shivery."</p><p>"I think blimey," she said. "I was looking at the one in Romania, and it's in the open air. And you think how did somebody or anything appear there and nobody else saw it arrive? It does make you think, why should we be the only people? And we are making such a mess of everything now anyway. At the time of filming, humans had yet to reach the moon.</p><p>"We had to make decisions like: 'How's the moon?' Is it soft or is it dust? Is it hard?" Joy said. "I couldn't say anything, but when I left I thought what on earth does he mean." But Joy says Kubrick later asked her whether she knew of any young sculptors that could work on the film.</p><p>"I had a very good friend," she said. "We were at school and art school together, and she was a struggling sculptor then working in greengrocers and doing sculpture at night time. So I gave him the name and she arrived and the rest is history. '2001: A Space Odyssey' visual effects artist says recent monolith findings 'would've blown' Stanley Kubrick's mind

But such has been the cultural force and widespread interest in British writer-director Emerald Fennell's <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/where-to-watch-promising-young-woman">debut feature, "Promising Young Woman."</a></p><p>The revenge flick has been one of the year's most-talked-about movies since it debuted in theaters late last year, and it has quickly become a surprise awards front-runner <a href="https://www.insider.com/golden-globes-nominations-best-director-three-women-nominated-2021-2">picking up multiple nominations</a> across the Golden Globes, critics circles, and independent circuit.</p><p>Much of the discussion surrounding the film, however, has been centered around an awkward dispute between the film's star, Carey Mulligan, and a review of the movie written by veteran critic Dennis Harvey, published in Variety, which has sparked a heated discussion surrounding the editorial standards of Hollywood's trade publications and the freedom of critics.</p><h2>Dennis Harvey's review called Mulligan 'a bit of an odd choice' for her role as a seductress in the movie</h2><div type="image" title="&quot;Promising Young Woman&quot;" height="2400" width="3600" msid="80879282" hostid="261"></div><p>"<keyword id="10490796" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="promising-young-woman">Promising Young Woman</keyword>," which also stars Bo Burnham and Alison Brie, premiered in January 2020 at the Sundance film festival where it received largely positive reviews. In the movie, Carey Mulligan plays Cassandra - a medical school dropout who dedicates her life to catching predatory men by pretending to be drunk at bars and clubs, and then revealing her sobriety when they have taken her to their homes.</p><p>At the festival, Harvey, a veteran film critic, <a href="https://variety.com/2020/film/reviews/promising-young-woman-review-1203480660/">praised the film</a> for its "compelling mix of thriller, black comedy" genre devices but suggested that Mulligan, whose performance he described as "skillful, entertaining and challenging," was, in fact, an "odd choice" for the lead role and suggested that Australian actor Margot Robbie, who is a producer on the movie, might have been better suited to play the lead.</p><p>His reviews read: "Mulligan, a fine actress, seems a bit of an odd choice as this admittedly many-layered apparent femme fatale - Margot Robbie is a producer here, and one can (perhaps too easily) imagine the role might once have been intended for her. Whereas with this star, Cassie wears her pickup-bait gear like bad drag; even her long blonde hair seems a put-on.</p><p>"The flat American accent she delivers in her lowest voice register likewise seems a bit meta, though it's not quite clear what the quote marks around this performance signify. "It felt like it was basically saying that I wasn't hot enough to pull off this kind of ruse. It drove me so crazy," she continued. "I was like, 'Really?' For this film, you're going to write something that is so transparent? Now? In 2020?' "I'm a 60-year-old gay man. I don't actually go around dwelling on the comparative hotnesses of young actresses, let alone writing about that."</p><p>He added: "This whole thing could not be more horrifying to me than if someone had claimed I was a gung-ho Trump supporter."</p><p>Now, earlier this week, the National Society of Film Critics - the group which represents the country's most prominent critics - <a href="https://twitter.com/NatSocFilmCrix/status/1359185359922319363">published a statement</a> on Twitter that condemned Variety's treatment of Dennis Harvey and demanded that the publication removes the apology from his review of the movie. "We, the members of the National Society of Film Critics, wish to register our alarm at Variety's shabby treatment of our colleague Dennis Harvey," the statement read.</p><p>"If Variety felt the language in Harvey's review was insensitive and insinuating, it had the option of working with him to fix that in the editing process before it ran. There are also ways Variety could have acknowledged and responded to Mulligan's criticism, rather than simply capitulating to it and undermining its own critic in the process."</p><p>According to the National Society of Film Critics website, Peter Debruge and Owen Gleiberman, Variety's chief film critics, are both members of the society. </p>

Every year from June to September, 30 acres of rich Arabica coffee are organically cultivated, cleaned, and roasted at the estate — even during this time, while it's temporarily closed. </p><p>Produce from the farm has been feeding the property's onsite crew, and each staff member receives a basket of food to take home every week. </p><p>"I like the collaboration with the team here and how we all work together," said Pius Daniel, the agricultural manager at Gibb's Farm. It's known for its flourishing farmland, and for being home to many traditional country estates, which in England have historically served as second homes and quiet retreats for people who live in larger, bustling cities.</p><p>The Newt itself is a 300-plus year old historic country estate that offers wide cultivated gardens, acres of apple orchards, and parkland.</p><p>When the property is open to visitors, there's an array of talks and workshops for guests about organic gardening and beekeeping. "This time has enabled us to return to nature and really understand the beauty of what we have here at the ranch and to celebrate it." </p><p>Wood chronicled his newfound responsibilities outside of the kitchen, including caring for the resort's animals and gardens (which are flourishing more than they normally would this time of year since there's no visitor foot traffic to disrupt growth). <p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div>Review-aggregation site Rotten Tomatoes has become the go-to for discerning moviegoers when they need to decide if it's worth dishing out their hard-earned cash on the latest cineplex offerings.</p><p>But director/producer Brett Ratner (the man behind the "Rush Hour" franchise) isn't a fan of the site, to put it lightly.</p><p>"The worst thing that we have in today's movie culture is Rotten Tomatoes," Ratner <a href="http://ew.com/movies/2017/03/23/ratner-tomatoes-scores/" target="_blank">said</a> while speaking at the Sun Valley Film Festival this past weekend.</p><p>Ratner's company RatPac Entertainment cofinanced "Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice" (and countless other big-budget movies), and as he makes clear, he's still feeling the sting of the critical backlash against that superhero blockbuster, despite its massive box-office gross (it currently sits at a <a href="https://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/batman_v_superman_dawn_of_justice" target="_blank">rotten 27%</a>).</p><p>"I think it's the destruction of our business. I have such respect and admiration for film criticism," Ratner said. "When I was growing up film criticism was a real art. And there was intellect that went into that. And you would read Pauline's Kael's reviews, or some others, and that doesn't exist anymore. Now it's about a number. A compounded number of how many positives vs. negatives. Now it's about, 'What's your Rotten Tomatoes score?' And that's sad, because the Rotten Tomatoes score was so low on 'Batman v Superman' I think it put a cloud over a movie that was incredibly successful."</p><p>Rotten Tomatoes has become such a resource for audiences that if a movie has a high rating on the site, it's often used in promotion for the film.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div>Ratner has never received much love from the site's scores for the <a href="https://www.rottentomatoes.com/celebrity/brett_ratner" target="_blank">movies he's directed</a> (his highest as a director was 69% for 2002's "Red Dragon"). And the stigma of a rotten score for a film like "Batman v Superman" is a concern to Ratner.</p><p>"People don't realize what goes into making a movie like that," Ratner said. "It's mind-blowing. It's just insane, it's hurting the business, it's getting people to not see a movie. In Middle America it's, 'Oh, it's a low Rotten Tomatoes score so I'm not going to go see it because it must suck.' But that number is an aggregate and one that nobody can figure out exactly what it means, and it's not always correct. I've seen some great movies with really abysmal Rotten Tomatoes scores. What's sad is film criticism has disappeared.
