Trigger Warning: Some may feel that the following content is disturbing. <ul><li>A UNICEF report reveals that around 14% of young people aged between 15-25 years or 1 out of 7 people often feel depressed or face some <keyword id="6354774" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Mental-Health" source="Orion">mental health</keyword> related issues in India.</li><li>The <keyword id="8902449" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="COVID-19-pandemic" source="Orion">COVID-19 pandemic</keyword> has hit harder on young people and adolescents, as half of them reported that they or someone in their family had lost a job or taken a cut in pay.</li><li>Women who suffer from mental health issues are more likely to invite other diseases, especially problems related to fertility and menstruation.</li><li>Business Insider spoke to senior psychiatrist Dr. <keyword id="1808876" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="jyoti-kapoor" source="Orion">Jyoti Kapoor</keyword> to gain some perspective on this issue.</li></ul> A 21-year old girl, who recently graduated from Delhi University, says she has been facing anxiety issues for the last four years. The girl, who wanted to remain anonymous because of privacy concerns, suffered from massive anxiety issues for the first time when she had to appear for her board exams in class 12. Now, she has graduated from her college and is still thinking about what career path to choose. She says, “Whenever someone asks me about my future plans, I start panicking because I’ve nothing to tell. I graduated during the pandemic and I’m still undecided about my career.” It is not only students or fresh graduates who go through periods of anxiety and depression. More and more women, especially from Generation Z — persons born in the mid-to-late 1990s — seem to be open about their mental health concerns. Radhika Gupta, a 23-year old woman from Delhi, who has her own business of handicraft products shares her mental health journey with Business Insider. “Whether you do a 9-5 job or you start your own company, the professional world comes handy with overthinking, stress, tension and whatnot. It’s like I’m already so used to this habit of overthinking and [being] tense all the time, that now I don’t feel like it's a problem anymore,” says Gupta. She highlights some major issues that she faces on an everyday basis because of her gender. “I have given my number on my Instagram page named ‘Handflys’ for customers who want to place an order for my products. And, on an everyday basis, I receive inappropriate messages and calls. I ignore this most of the time, but sometimes I’m so tense and can’t stop thinking about it.” Another 25-year old woman, a public relations specialist who recently got married, spoke to Business Insider on the condition of anonymity. She talks about how unmanageable her life has become after getting married. She has to manage her work as well as her home — cook meals and take care of her new in-laws. She says, “I wake up at 6 in the morning and I don’t know where all my time goes. I start my office work at 9 a.m., and before that I’m responsible for making breakfast for everybody. I even have to take several breaks in between my office hours as I have to cook lunch and dinner as well. Sometimes it becomes unmanageable for me to handle both the things, I often feel like quitting my job as I don’t have time for myself or do something that makes me feel happy.” According to a report, dated October 5, 2021, by the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF), around 14% of young people aged between 15-25 years or 1 out of 7 people often feel depressed or face some mental health-related issues in India. And also, children of this group in India have been more resistant in seeking support for these issues, as per the report. People who face these issues, also find themselves distracted or uninterested most of the time, the report says. The report also notes that as the COVID-19 pandemic heads into its third year, the impact on children and young people's mental health continues to weigh heavily. The reason behind this has a lot of key driving factors. As per the Indian Journal of Psychiatry, even before the pandemic, at least 50 million children in India were affected with mental health issues and 80-90% of them have not even sought professional support. Another report by Pew Research Center <a href="https://www.linkedin.com/pulse/why-gen-z-so-depressed-what-we-can-do-jennifer">highlighted </a>that the pandemic has hit harder on young people and adolescents, as half of them reported that they or someone in their family had lost a job or taken a cut in pay, and also most of them haven’t yet established their careers and they’ll likely have a harder time getting back on track. To have a better understanding and gain some perspective, Business Insider spoke to Dr. Jyoti Kapoor, senior psychiatrist and founder of Manasthali, an online platform, which provides mental health related services. Kapoor is of the opinion that young people are succumbing to <keyword id="24492" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Mental-health-problems" source="Orion">mental health problems</keyword> far more today than compared to a few years back. “We see a lot of stimulation, a huge amount of information regarding anything is out there and this information exposes us to a lot of conflicts. A younger mind is not ready to handle those conflicts. So the stress levels are pretty high, especially expectations from ourselves,” says Kapoor. Further talking about stimulus, she also highlights that people of this age group (15-25) are almost starters or freshers who are just entering the professional world or are heading towards career-deciding exams. People of this age group have over the time become more competitive, or have a jealousy factor that shoots up the anxiety and stress level way more, according to Kapoor. “Younger people want to achieve success very fast. People now want to have their own startups, they want to have luxurious items and that can become quite stressful as people don’t want to give up so easily,” she adds. The people who belong to Gen Z are mostly night owls rather than early risers as compared to millennials, says Kapoor. A study cited by The Economic Times in 2018 <a href="https://economictimes.indiatimes.com/magazines/panache/sleepless-in-the-city-53-per-cent-indians-go-to-bed-late-thanks-to-facebook-instagram/articleshow/65559905.cms">revealed</a> that 53% of Gen Z population in India go to bed late or sleep late due to gadgets or social media scrolling. “Not only people using social media or watching Netflix, the globalisation of work culture has also eradicated the sleep culture. People more often come across work-related situations at night, which disrupts their sleeping patterns.” — Dr. Jyoti Kapoor, a senior psychiatrist Mental health not only disrupts your peace of mind, but it brings out a chain of side effects in your body. Women who suffer from mental health issues are more likely to invite other diseases, especially problems related to fertility and menstruation. “PCOS [Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome] and PCOD [Polycystic Ovarian Disease] are one [sic] of the major psychosomatic problems. As it is a problem of hormonal imbalance, it requires treatment of stress management. Mental health can also bring you infertility issues. Higher the person is stressed, the lower will be the chances to conceive,” Kapoor highlights. We all have heard of people who do crazy things to impress someone, but end up annoying them. One such case happened recently, when a self-proclaimed ‘fan’ of superstar Shah Rukh Khan’s spray-painted the walls of <keyword id="38356" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="100" keywordseo="mannat">Mannat</keyword>, the actor’s Mumbai mansion. 
 
While the graffiti was done to show off the admiration and love that the fan must have had for the star, it certainly has left the star shocked, and legitimately so. 
 
Here are some other incidents of people going to crazy lengths to show their love for their favourite celebrities. While some of them really show the admiration that these fans have, some of them are outright insane.

<ul><li>Motivational speakers, who are known to guide their followers through various life problems ranging from heartbreaks to career advice, promote self-help and entrepreneurship through small internet videos.</li><li>While these motivational speakers, who live by <keyword id="10578208" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="hustle-culture" source="Orion">hustle culture</keyword>, have amassed millions of followers, there is a counter-subgroup emerging on the internet.</li><li>This subgroup includes content creators and internet users who believe that motivational content comes across as ‘privilege deaf.’</li><li>We speak to these content creators and <keyword id="6354774" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="mental-health" source="Orion">mental health</keyword> experts to find out why ‘motivation’ is becoming ‘demotivating’ for some internet users and why there’s a growing aversion towards hustle culture and motivational speakers.</li></ul>In a room full of around 100 people, a young woman takes the centre stage. She opens up about her recent breakup and how it was difficult for her to move on and find happiness again. A <keyword id="228307" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="motivational-speaker" source="Orion">motivational speaker</keyword>, who claims to have ‘failed and surged in search of success and happiness,’ tells her to give herself a pep talk. He says, “You can look at one problem through different perspectives. If you dislike someone in your family, ignore their flaws. Train your mind to look at their positive attributes instead. In your mind, not on the outside, look at the world's problems lightly. Be a warrior from the outside and a monk on the inside.” These motivational speakers, with no formal degree in mental health, aim to guide their audience through all challenges in their life ranging from mental illness, relationship advice, and financial advice on how to become rich. They claim to have “risen above the rat race” and have challenged the age-old myth of “life is tough.” Much like Viru Shahastrabuddhe of the Bollywood movie “3 Idiots”, for motivational speakers, “Life is a race. If you don’t run fast, you will be like a broken anda (egg).” <div type="image" title="Life_is_a_race_वायरस_आया_अंडे_लेके__3_Idiots__Boman_Irani_A" msid="90731324" hostid="261"></div> So, they ask their audiences to live and breathe by <a href="https://www.forbes.com/sites/celinnedacosta/2019/04/28/stop-idolizing-hustle-culture-and-do-this-instead/?sh=5ab86ea033cb">hustle culture</a>, which is about grinding away, working harder, stronger and faster, and even sacrificing your sleep for work. This sleep-deprived race to attain power, money and success, comes at a cost. It can put your mental health and <a href="https://www.webmd.com/heart/news/20170911/the-health-risks-of-long-work-weeks">physical </a>health at risk. Growing movement against hustle culture on the internet However, anti-capitalism memes and videos are taking over Instagram and <a href="https://www.reddit.com/r/antiwork/">Reddit </a>to counter hustle culture. Internet users across the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/policy/economy/news/anti-capitalism-is-flooding-tiktok-as-young-people-question-a-life-that-prioritizes-productivity-over-well-being/articleshow/89870972.cms">world </a>are calling out motivational speakers for promoting hustle culture and for the toll it takes on their mental health. A community on Reddit called ‘<a href="https://www.reddit.com/r/antiwork/">anti-work</a>’ with 1.9 million members is also aimed at calling out <keyword id="6497689" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="capitalism" source="Orion">capitalism</keyword>. Their recent post about hoping to see American socialite Kim Kardashian work for minimum wage got more than 108,000 votes. <div type="image" title="reddit meme" msid="90731419" hostid="261"></div> Closer home, Mumbai-based Md Anas, a comedian and content creator, has made many parodies of motivational speakers. In one of his popular parodies, which was recently picked by a <a href="https://www.instagram.com/tv/CbT_MsTr9Sv/?utm_medium=copy_link">media </a>platform, he denounced motivational speakers and their glorification of hustle culture. Words like ‘motivation’ and ‘hustle’ only worked for him back in the day, he says. While he loves creating content and making people laugh, and that drives him to work hard, he has dissociated himself from the hustle culture. “One major problem with motivational content I believe is that it comes across as privilege deaf. Saying something like you have the same amount of time as a billionaire refutes the idea of physical, financial and mental struggles that people go through. Having said that, a lot of people looking for answers will find solace in general motivation, particularly teenagers or early college-goers,” says Anas. Psychotherapist Rhea Gandhi recently took to <a href="https://www.instagram.com/p/CbzskWIs2Ng/?utm_medium=copy_link">Instagram </a>to explain why people are instantly demotivated when they hear the word ‘motivation.’ “The pop psychology narratives around motivation on the internet are exhausting: motivational speakers, motivational quotes, motivational videos and the list goes on and on and on. Hustle culture makes us believe that motivation needs to be constant or something is wrong with us. It doesn't allow us space to be human, to grieve, to love, to stand still. It makes us believe we should always be moving. But motivation is an inside job. It’s illuminated when we stand still and reflect. It is in stillness and relationships that we can see ourselves. Find our own resources. External tools last days, if not minutes.” She added that we feel inspired when we look within, instead of following society's ideas of what we 'should' do. Budding content creator and stand-up comedian Soniya Kalyani, who gave up her corporate job to pursue content creation, didn’t appreciate unsolicited advice that came from people around her and on the internet. “Coming from a middle-class background, I have seen so many people bombarding me with advice on ‘do this, do that.’ But the reality is I don't need the gyan (advice). I lack the resources to execute [my ideas] and access to connections, which amplifies your growth much faster.” Ergo, she feels that motivational speakers should stay away from the topics they don’t understand or try walking in their audience’s shoes. Kalyani was on the brink of burnout when she decided to take a break. She says that the words ‘motivation’ and ‘hustle’ have developed negative connotations because social media portrays that you are supposed to feel motivated and hustle constantly. “I don't believe in the word motivation. You have to train yourself to be disciplined. While trying to discipline myself, I did face severe burnout twice. Now, if I feel I am on the brink, I take a break and I go a little easy on myself. Trying to show up every day sometimes gets exhausting, so I allow myself to rest.” As of April 10, 2022, there are more than 29 million posts with #hustle on Instagram, #hustlehard has attracted 4.3 million posts and #sleepisfortheweak has seen more than 226K posts. On why the word motivation has become demotivating for internet users, Life coach Sidhharrth S Kumaar says, “The word ‘motivation’ has transformed itself to be demotivating due to the pressure of following a blind race in all situations and circumstances. This blind chase of motivation or motivational speakers, infuses a thought in mind that everyone is the same, and we need to perform and be supercharged in all situations and this, in turn, leads to performance anxiety and stress causing irrecoverable losses in life.” Does the internet’s popular hustle culture have consequences? According to Microsoft's work trend index <a href="https://news.microsoft.com/en-in/close-to-one-third-of-workers-in-india-face-increased-burnout-at-work/">report</a>, which surveyed over 6,000 employees across eight countries in October 2020, India had the second-highest percentage of workers facing increased burnout among Asian countries at 29%. India also came out on top with over 41% of workers citing the lack of separation between work and personal life as negatively impacting their well-being, resulting in increased stress levels. While hustling for some is a matter of survival, the constant need to achieve ‘more’ has become an obsession on the internet. Dr. Jyoti Kapoor, founder of mental health and wellness service Manasthali and senior psychiatrist, says that while motivational speakers have their hearts in the right place, the state of mind of the person who is listening may or may not be receptive at that point in time. “If we are being forcefully motivated when we are already feeling overwhelmed or exhausted, we may associate our feeling of helplessness to the motivational argument itself, thereby developing a negative reaction. It also happens in relaxation exercises, if they are started when a patient is too anxious, they become more anxious while trying to do the exercise to relax,” explains Dr. Kapoor. A World Health Organization <a href="https://www.who.int/news/item/02-03-2022-covid-19-pandemic-triggers-25-increase-in-prevalence-of-anxiety-and-depression-worldwide">report </a>released in March 2022 painted a rather grim picture. The health body said that the COVID-19 pandemic led to a 25% jump in anxiety and depression cases across the world. It went on to say that more than 300 million people around the world suffer from depression, which is the leading cause of workplace disability. It estimates that depression and anxiety disorders cost the global economy around $ 1 trillion each year in lost productivity. Did the global pandemic give a push to the anti-hustle movement on the internet? During several lockdowns that country went through, it almost felt like someone was telling you to push even harder on social media. Avantika Mohan, a lifestyle content creator, who says she is guilty of talking about the hustle culture in the past, now feels that ‘what works for her doesn’t necessarily have to work for anyone else.’ The problem with hustle culture, she says, lies with the idea that everyone has the same 24 hours in a day. “While everyone has the same amount of time, it is important to understand that everyone does not have the same resources or even the same end goals,” she declares. Adding how the dislike toward motivational speakers grew after the lockdown, Mohan says, “The pandemic saw a huge shift in how people perceive hustle and that was a push towards the aversion to motivational speakers because of the worry of a future that came with the pandemic. A huge reason for this aversion was constantly being ‘motivated’ by someone to give our best. Someone who is a stranger, someone behind a screen and someone who does not have the same struggles as us. Most motivational speakers talk about seizing every second and every opportunity only to not factor in the individual struggles and the lack of resources and that hustle is not the only way to grow, or earn respect.” Kerala-based parenthood and lifestyle content creator, Nuziha (@nuzihajmal), feels that the pressure to constantly hustle became too much for her after the pandemic. “The school of thought about working hard to achieve the best results never says only work hard. Hard work, even if done for a few hours, with sincerity and discipline can yield the best results. This school of thought was quickly replaced by motivational speakers talking about bringing a hustle culture to life. This increased even more during the pandemic with people being constantly told to do more with their time since we were all in lockdown.” Nuziha’s partner Ajmal points out that each journey is different. “Our work demands us to be constantly online and we see a lot of creators and motivational speakers on Instagram talking about how being always hands-on at work is the only way to bring success. However, it is important to understand before preaching that the struggles of everyday life differ from person to person.” After the pandemic, if there’s one good thing that happened, is that personal lives took more precedence over jobs and the growing movement against hustle culture in India is just the beginning. In the US, 65% of <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/labor-shortage-slow-up-great-reshuffle-gen-z-demands-workplace-2021-11">Gen Z</a> is planning to leave their job this year and join the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/careers/news/heres-everything-we-know-about-the-great-resignation-whos-quitting-and-why/articleshow/86429516.cms">Great Resignation</a>. And it is not just students, disturbing news about people taking this decision due to job loss, frustration, and even due to <a href="https://www.indiatvnews.com/technology/news-pubg-mobile-death-student-kills-himself-over-pubg-ban-in-india-648017">lack of access to games</a> have been doing the rounds. According to the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB), suicide cases among daily wage earners<a href="https://indianexpress.com/article/india/daily-wager-suicide-rate-2019-6584738/"> is also on the rise. </a>The COVID-19 pandemic is making things even worse. Coronavirus has triggered anxiety, fear, frustration, sadness and loneliness among people — to the extent that those feelings become constant and overwhelming. As we mark International Suicide Prevention Day today, Business Insider spoke to mental health experts about different signs that show whether a person is suicidal or in need of professional help urgently. Indifferent attitude towards mental health is the biggest barrier. Mental illness is more common than we think. And the disorders range in severity, but many remain unaware or may choose not to seek help. Loss of interest in activities one used to enjoy 7. Withdrawal from people, friends, family 8. Past history of suicide attempt or self-harm behaviour 9. How can you help? “One of the best ways to help people is to take them to a professional who can use an evidence-based therapy such as "Dialectical Behaviour therapy" that is proven in helping them find a life that is less painful and more worth living,” says Radhika Bapat, Clinical Psychotherapist. The oath taking ceremony will be held at 7 pm on Thursday (May 30), ensuring that all the attention of prime time television viewers are solely on him. He gave <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/full-text-of-modi-speech-lok-sabha-election-2019/articleshow/69467611.cms" data-type="tilCustomLink" target="_blank">over an hour long victory speech</a>, again on prime time, after the election results were declared on May 23. Run up to the event Modi has kickstarted his oath-taking day, early this morning by saluting his heroes. He paid a tribute at the National War Memorial in the morning. The PM from Guajrat won a second consecutive term with a thumping majority, also paid tribute to Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)’s prominent former Prime Minister, Atal Bihari Vajpayee. This charismatic former Prime Minister was instrumental in creating the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) in 1998. Modi who hails from Gandhinagar which was also home to father of the nation, Mahatma Gandhi, also visited Rajghat today to pay homage. The newly elected PM’s oath taking ceremony promises to be interesting as <a data-type="tilCustomLink">8,000 guests</a> from within and outside the country are expected to pour in for the event. It is being touted as the biggest ever event that takes place at Rashtrapathi Bhavan. The event also promises to be star-studded as many Bollywood celebrities including Vivek Oberoi who played the role of Modi, in a now-released movie ‘Modi’, are expected to attend the event. Invites have also gone in for <a data-type="tilCustomLink">BIMSTEC leaders</a>—which includes Bangladesh, Myanmar, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Nepal and Bhutan. However, it is now known that leaders from Kyrgyzstan and Mauritius will be attending the event. The swearing in ceremony is striving to make Modi’s guests from his constituency in Varanasi feel special. A special gallery called ‘Kashi Sankul’ is being set-up to accommodate 250 special guests from Uttar Pradesh. The event however is not without its controversies. The winning party BJP invited the families of those killed in the West Bengal political violence which erupted just before the last phase of polling. This move angered Mamata Banerjee the chief minister of the state and the head of Trinamool Congress, who declined an invitation to the attend the ceremony. Modi Government is about to complete one year in office and one year is a significant time for understanding the intent and to some extent the performance of any government. <keyword id="2403978" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="80" keywordseo="The-Modi-government">The Modi government</keyword> had won the election on the plank of development and its promise to bring ‘acche din’. The article tries to trace some of the promises that were made and the performance of the government during the previous year under various broad themes. 
 
Economy- The government has been helped by what a prominent editor termed ‘acche sitare’, ‘good luck’. It is no doubt true that fall in commodity prices in general and crude oil, in particular, helped the government reign in the <keyword id="6365485" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="80" keywordseo="fiscal-deficit">fiscal deficit</keyword> and give it headway to make fiscal policies for the country. The fiscal deficit target for 2015-16 has been the pegged by the budget to 3.9%. While this is little above than recommendations of the Fourteenth <keyword id="74136" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="80" keywordseo="finance-commission">Finance Commission</keyword> ( which recommended it to be 3.6 percent of the <keyword id="35050" type="CITY" weightage="80" keywordseo="gdp">GDP</keyword>), the government has understandably batted for growth. The government still is slowly but surely moving towards the limit set by FRBM (Fiscal Responsibility and Budgetary Management) Act, 2003 that pegged the target at a maximum level of 3% of the GDP. The government has also tried to help the <keyword id="34412" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="80" keywordseo="economy">economy</keyword> gain momentum by enabling legislation for reforms. These included trying to go in for a major reform in the indirect taxation regime as well as accepting the recommendations of Fourteenth <keyword id="25455" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="80" keywordseo="finance">Finance</keyword> Commission in respect to revenue sharing with states. It was ostensibly done to ensure a spirit of ‘cooperative federalism’ between states and center, as well as greater financial devolution to states. The figure now stands at 42% of the total revenue collection up from the earlier 32%. Also, the year saw growth forecasts been revised for India by a number of International Bodies and agencies. The IMF revised its forecasts to 7.5 % In 2015 in its WEO April 2015 forecast. It was up from the 6.4 projected for 2015 in the WEO April 2014 forecast. Similarly, the Asian Development Bank in its Asian Development Outlook 2015, indicated a bettering economy with less than 5 percent core <keyword id="22195" type="COMPANY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Inflation">inflation</keyword>. They also alluded to the new monetary policy framework according to which RBI, India's central bank is to play the role of price stabilization primarily while being mindful of growth. With the policy framework in place, the central bank will be maintaining the inflation target of 4±2 % from FY 2016 onwards. Thus with an overall bettering situation a total score of 7.5 out of 10. 
 
Foreign Engagement and Defence- Foreign engagement was by far the area where the most vigorous activity and keen intent were observed. The sphere saw initiatives undertaken by the PM himself to make India more noticeable as well as more integrated with the International sphere. It included among many things, trips to foreign countries both in the neighbourhood as well as to countries like Germany, France, Australia, US, Canada and most recently beginning May 14, 2015 his trip to China. The engagement also saw a large number of foreign dignitaries coming to India from across the world. The engagement also saw bilateral agreements as well as plans to invest in India's development by countries and companies abroad, most notably by Japan, US and China. Also, steps to resolve contentious issues have been undertaken pertaining to the border areas with neighbours. It includes the recently passed Bangladesh Land Accord Bill that envisages transferring enclaves and demarcation of the boundary along the present porous borders. Also, in the broad sphere of defence the decision to acquire 36 Rafale fighter jets is a welcome step. More such acquisitions will have to be made since these 36 planes would add just two squadrons to thirty-five squadrons that IAF has. It is below an authorized strength of forty-two which will be down to twenty- five by 2022. It means we must speed up the process of defense acquisitions since there is urgent need to upgrade and modernize the armed forces and security apparatus in India. Overall a score of 8.5 out of 10 foreign engagement and 7.5 out of 10 on defence. 
 
 
Agriculture- Here the government has not been able to do that well, and it is understandable because there has been erratic weather accentuated by some mismanagement by the government. The sector is critical as most people are dependent on it for employment. Added to the weather were the issues of land acquisition and urea availability to farmers. Land Acquisition Bill though being blocked by the opposition on the farmer rights plank is linked directly to the development of clusters and employment of youth for especially rural areas. The focus of the government seems to be the development of irrigation facilities under its Pradhanmantri Krishi Sinchai Yojana. A fund was proposed to be set up for marginalized farmers with a corpus of Rs. 25000 crores in NABARD. An overall score of 6.5 on 10. 
 
Industrial policy and power- Industrial policy saw a continuity from the previous regime. The National Manufacturing Policy (NMP) was hailed by the 'Make in India' as the 'most comprehensive and significant policy initiative of the government'. The 'Make in India' is an initiative that is critically dependent on other factors. These include availability of land, ease of doing business as well as removal of inverse duty structures that make imports of finished products cheaper than finished products. Apart from this labour policies that favour flexibility in hiring and firing are also seen to be the main bottlenecks. While the government has taken some steps to rectify, these bottlenecks outcomes are yet to be seen. Similarly, the <keyword id="44528" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="80" keywordseo="FDI">FDI</keyword> policy has seen incremental reforms with the opening up of <keyword id="35450" type="COMPANY" weightage="80" keywordseo="insurance">insurance</keyword> and defence sectors further to 49% from the earlier limit of 26%. Both these are positive steps for the economy. Greater structural changes could have been undertaken in these spheres especially with the mandate, but nonetheless significant work is been done. In the power sector, much has been achieved. It included the successful auction of the coal mines, which is slated to rope in a massive 15 lakh crore over the 30-year timeframe if all the mines are auctioned and are working at optimum output. Apart from this coal production was at an all-time high as well as the government seems on track to meet the power requirements of the country. Overall a score of 6.5 for industries and a score of 8 for power out of 10. 
 
Education- The countries' education system can broadly be classified under two broad areas- higher education and school education. There are several schemes that are operational under these. The government in the past one-year has come up with several new initiatives including the Beti-Bachao Beti Padhao Abhiyan, Swachh Vidyalaya and GIS Mapping of schools and has opened several new institutions. However, the fact remains that despite all government’s initiatives most people if given a choice, prefer private schooling since it gives their children a competitive edge later on in their careers. The governments of the past have failed in this and correcting this anomaly will take time. Also, in respect to higher education the government seems keen to have holistic development with several new AIIMS, IIM and IIT like institutions being opened in states that have a paucity of these. What remains to seen is how quality and not just quantity is pursued within these institutions while ensuring regional development. An overall score of 6.5 on 10. 
 
Infrastructure- The primary focus of the government in this sphere is up-gradation of existing and quick development of new infrastructure. The first can be observed in the push for railway up-gradation and improvement in customer service. The second can be observed more in the highways sector with the minister setting himself a target of 30 km a day by 2017. In March this year 11 km of roads were being laid. The broad ambit of infrastructure covers the development of roads, highways, ports, airport, waterways, canals, and railways. It is too early to judge the government's progress on the same however the fact that there is clearance for projects worth close to Rs. 6 lakh Crore across 10 key sectors. It shows intent on the part of government for infrastructure development. Overall a score of 7.5 on 10. 
 
Social Schemes- The social schemes of the government have been particularly impressive. These include the <keyword id="2494045" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="80" keywordseo="jan-dhan">Jan Dhan</keyword> Yojana, Pradhan Mantri Jivan Jyoti Bima Yojana (PMJJBY) Pradhan Mantri Suraksha Bima Yojana (PMSBY) and Atal Pension Yojana and many other social missions like the <keyword id="6562839" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="80" keywordseo="Swacch-Bharat-Mission">Swacch Bharat Mission</keyword> and the Clean Ganga Mission. For the Jan Dhan Yojana already around 12.5 crore accounts have been opened along with a capital infusion of Rs 10,500 crore into the system. The three recently launched social security schemes (namely the (PMJJBY), Pradhan Mantri Suraksha Bima Yojana ) and Atal Pension Yojana) have got nearly 6.5 crore subscriptions. It is because (PMJJBY) scheme offers Rs. 2 lakh cover for a mere 330 Rs. Per year (provided bank account holders are from age 18-50). Under the (PMSBY), renewable one-year accident cum disability cover of Rs. 2 lakh is provided for Rs.12 premium every year. The Atal Pension Yojana is aimed at those people who work in the unorganised sector and do not fall under the ambit of regular pension. The scheme offers pension under various brackets depending on the contribution made over a period. The scheme is for people in the age bracket 18-40 years. The social focus of the government is also evident from the fact the government has continued with previous schemes and linked them with technology for targeted interventions. The JAM (Jan Dhan Account, Aadhaar Cards and Mobiles) number Trinity as mentioned in the budget speech is an example of the same. The government seems to have a social focus for benefit to poor. An overall score of 8 on 10. 
 
Urbanization and Urban development- The urbanization and urban development received an increased thrust under the 100 Smart City project. The thrust of the present government is not only on up gradation of brownfield cities but also development of new greenfield cities. Traditionally, India has been slow to urbanize, and at present 32 percent of people reside in urban areas. However, the quality of urban life has seen a precipitous decline in the past few decades. The government's smart city initiative is a step aimed at understanding and absorbing the migration of people from rural to urban areas. However, the implementation of the project holds the key. Success in greenfield development is critically linked to land acquisition. Also, will the 'smart cities' improve liveability for the ever-burgeoning population remains to be seen? The project is ambitious in scope and the past year has seen some activity with the launch of the GIFT city in Gujarat and work on cities of DMIDC. An overall score of 6.5 on 10. 
 
Health and Environment- Health along with education have been two areas where successive governments have faltered. The system in India needs a drastic overhaul and increased spending by the government. Also there is a severe shortage of trained personnel in the sector. Add to this the decrepit facilities in rural areas that forces one to look at ways and means to better delivery. The activity in the health ministry was seen to be rather subdued. However, the taxation on cigarettes ensures that a majority of population reconsiders decision to buy cigarettes. The quality of air and the general pollution levels in Indian cities pose serious health issues for all residents. Disease patterns are also changing and this calls for a comprehensive approach to healthcare access and delivery. Not much has been done in this regard. An overall score of 6 on 10. 
 
<keyword id="107737" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="80" keywordseo="Entrepreneurship">Entrepreneurship</keyword> and Employment- For the first time a separate ministry for entrepreneurship has seen the light of the day. This fact along with the fact that skilling are the main thrust areas of the ministry make it clear that the government is in sync with the present ground reality. A million people will enter the workforce every month over the next decade. So it becomes imperative that India produces jobs for its burgeoning workforce. That will not just come from formal and informal sector but will require a thrust for entrepreneurship. Similarly, thrust for skilling is imperative. Further, a draft policy on skill development and entrepreneurship has already been made and put out for public consultation. Though much remains to be seen in terms of its impact the direction and intent, in this case, seems to be spot on. An overall score of 7.5 on 10. 
 
Overall, in assessing the performance, the government seems to have taken cognizance of the major challenges facing India in multiple spheres and taken requisite steps. It seems to be headed in the right direction. It augurs well for India in the medium to long term. Much will depend on the speed of legislation, decision-making and implementation over the next four years.
