<ul class="summary-list"><li>Aly Anderson had spent two years caring for her daughter who had been born with a heart condition.</li><li>She told a friend she'd been having stomach pain but couldn't see a doctor without insurance.</li></ul>In March 2020, Allison Fadden's childhood friend, Aly Anderson, came to Seattle to take her daughter to an appointment at a hospital in the city. While the two friends caught up over lunch, Anderson said she hadn't been feeling well lately."She said she thought she had an ulcer because she'd been having <a href="https://www.insider.com/guides/health/conditions-symptoms/stomach-ache">stomach pain</a>," Fadden said. "But she thought it was all stress-related."Anderson had been under incredible stress after two years of trying to keep her baby alive. Her third child, Lila, had been born in 2018 with a <a href="https://www.insider.com/guides/parenting/what-is-congenital-heart-disease">congenital heart condition</a>. As doctors at Seattle Children' Hospital did everything they could to save Lila's life, Anderson tried to take care of her newborn baby and her two other children. She had worked as a barista and yoga instructor, but she had to stop working to take care of her family during a tumultuous time. <h2>She didn't have insurance, so she couldn't be seen by doctors</h2>"She was exhausted and stressed," Fadden said. Concerned about her friend, she asked if Anderson had seen a doctor about the stomach pains. "She said she didn't have health insurance — that it was really expensive," recalled Fadden.Although Anderson's husband and children had private insurance, when she stopped working to take care of Lila's health needs, she was no longer insured for medical treatment. Since she was young and healthy, she opted out of her husband's insurance to save money. "She figured she would be the last person who would need insurance," Fadden said. "I think her own health was on the back burner."Taylor Stonack, another of Anderson's friends, described her symptoms as severe stomach pain, vomiting a lot, and loss of appetite. "We all thought it was just stress," Stonack said. <h2>She was diagnosed with colon cancer</h2>Two months later, in May 2020, Aly phoned Allison to say she was throwing up from what she believed to be an ulcer and that she was getting her husband to take her to the hospital. After running scans, the doctors delivered the frightening news. Aly had cancer. "Often, colorectal cancers don't have many or any symptoms until it has grown or spread which is why it is highly recommended that you know your personal risk factors for colorectal cancers and when you should start screening with a colonoscopy. Removing pre-cancerous growths is one of the best ways to ensure the disease does not develop," Bhagwandin said. Bhagwandin said the best thing a person can do to remove much of the risk of colon cancer progressing is to get a colonoscopy. "While it isn't something anyone wants to do, the main message is that we highly recommend colonoscopies as a screening tool to detect colorectal cancers," Bhagwandin said. "They can save lives."Stonack doesn't think that having insurance would've changed anything in Aly's story. "Insurance is a luxury for many, but with the screening age for colon cancer being 45, we aren't sure that it would have made a difference, and it didn't run in Aly's family where they could have advocated for earlier screening," Stonack said. <h2>She died in 2023</h2>"She fought like hell," said Fadden about her friend Aly. "She had 56 rounds of chemo over three years."After battling with the state and insurance companies to get her own treatment and care for three years, Aly died at the beginning of March 2023. Stonack added, "Aly's biggest wish from this is to help others by advocating for yourself for early screening or to just schedule your Colon Screening the day you turn 45."

It's her latest CBD line, after launching her human-focused CBD line last year. </li></ul><h2>Policy moves</h2><ul><li>Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer said cannabis reform was a top legislative priority in an <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vGqjXN4OWAI&amp;feature=emb_titleitle">MSNBC interview with Rachel Maddow</a>. The top-ranking Democrat in the Senate expanded on his cannabis reform plan in a <a href="https://www.instagram.com/p/CKkZKT5FaQ8/">Wednesday evening interview on Instagram</a> with Al Harrington, the CEO of California cannabis company Viola Brands and a former NBA player. </li><li>Oregon's drug decriminalization law went into effect on Thursday, effectively decriminalizing the possession of small amounts of any drug statewide. </li><li>A new report from the industry publication Hemp Industry Daily found that hemp's impact on the US economy <a href="https://hempindustrydaily.com/chart-hemps-economic-impact-to-us-economy-could-near-16-billion-by-2025/">could hit $16 billion by 2025</a>.</li><li>New Jersey Gov. Murphy still hasn't signed the bill that would legalize <keyword id="40905" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Marijuana">marijuana</keyword> in the state, though voters overwhelmingly passed the proposal in November. A Republican lawmaker has <a href="https://www.nj.com/marijuana/2021/01/new-bill-would-allow-you-to-grow-your-own-marijuana-as-nj-legal-weed-debate-continues.html">since introduced a new bill</a> that would legalize growing up to six weed plants at home - a hotly-debated topic between cannabis reform activists and the cannabis industry.</li><li>On a panel hosted by cannabis law firm Vicente Sederberg, New York Gov. Cuomo's assistant counsel, Axel Bernabe, and appointed cannabis czar, Norman Birenbaum, said a realistic timeline for the beginning of recreational marijuana sales in the state is 12-18 months after a bill is passed. </li></ul><h2>Science and Research</h2><ul><li>A new study in the <a href="https://www.cambridge.org/core/journals/psychological-medicine/article/intelligence-quotient-decline-following-frequent-or-dependent-cannabis-use-in-youth-a-systematic-review-and-metaanalysis-of-longitudinal-studies/26BEC9CBD2A39010C26100278F8CA813">journal Psychological Medicine</a> found that people who use cannabis in their youth have an average IQ decline of 2 points compared to their peers who don't use cannabis.</li><li>A review published <a href="https://www.annualreviews.org/doi/full/10.1146/annurev-devpsych-040320-084904">in the Annual Review of Developmental Psychology</a> found that daily cannabis use among youth is associated with cannabis dependence and poor cognitive function. The authors noted that the regulation of cannabis should seek to minimize adolescent cannabis use. </li></ul><h2>Cannabis jobs</h2><ul><li>New York City boutique cannabis law firm Feuerstein Kulick LLP is hiring a mid-level corporate lawyer, with 3-4 years experience, <a href="https://www.linkedin.com/jobs/view/2376167726/?refId=HOUUHnO5SnpWyS7QlGcF1g%3D%3D&amp;trackingId=Y3NWblmc1SCY5%2B256%2FQssg%3D%3DD%3D">according to a job posting on LinkedIn</a>. </li></ul><h2>Chart of the week</h2>Revenue from adult-use cannabis programs usually gets an early boost in the first few years of legalization before slowing down as markets mature, according to data from the <a href="https://www.pewtrusts.org/en/research-and-analysis/issue-briefs/2019/08/forecasts-hazy-for-state-marijuana-revenue">Pew Charitable Trusts</a>, which tracked revenue in two of the oldest adult-use states in the US. Sales in Washington ballooned 277% between 2015 and 2016; Colorado saw a 53% increase in those same years. In short, and I said this on NBC LX on Thursday, the bill goes after the 'whole enchilada' (yes, terrible metaphor) for marijuana legalization: It would fully remove cannabis from the list of federally controlled substances, expunge some criminal records, tax and regulate the industry, create funds that help minority entrepreneurs, and eventually allow for interstate commerce.This is the first time the senate majority leader has outlined cannabis reform as a top priority, and he's joined by Wyden, chair of the Senate Finance Committee - arguably the most powerful committee - as well as a former presidential candidate in Booker.Though the bill will likely change significantly over the next few months, the chances it gets over the 60-vote filibuster threshold are almost nonexistent. It's even unlikely they'll get all 50 Democratic Senators onboard, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/marijuana-legalization-federal-decriminalization-congress-democrats-banking-schumber-2021-3">as we've reported</a>. There's a broader fight brewing within the industry as well as the popular activist movements that view legalization as the tip of the spear of broader police reform.The industry's investors and executives want access to banking. Meanwhile, across the pond, the UK on Tuesday began dosing the first patients with the vaccine, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/coronavirus-vaccine-uk-grandma-margaret-keenan-pfizer-first-2020-12">starting with a 90-year-old grandmother</a> with what has to be the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/pfizer-vaccine-approval-first-shot-charity-tshirt-sold-out-2020-12">best penguin shirt I've seen</a>. Relatedly, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/author/catherine-schuster-bruce">Dr. Catherine Schuster-Bruce</a> <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/uk-telehealth-startup-qdoctor-helps-pfizer-covid-19-vaccine-rollout-">reports on how Qdoctor, a little-known telehealth startup, is poised to make a mark by helping the UK roll out the vaccine. </a>Notably, as people outside of clinical trials started getting vaccinated, two people with known allergies had allergic reactions after receiving Pfizer's shot. Both are fine, but it prompted the UK <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/pfizer-vaccine-allergy-covid-allergic-reaction-uk-regulator-fda-2020-12">to issue a warning that people with severe allergies should avoid getting Pfizer's vaccine.</a>While we still don't have a full picture of what's going on with the allergic reactions (they didn't show up in clinical trials conducted by Pfizer and BioNTech), <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/pfizer-covid-19-vaccine-ingredients-allergic-reactions-2020-12">Hilary has the breakdown of what all is in the vaccine - including sucrose.</a>The topic of allergic reactions <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/live-updates-on-fda-covid-19-vaccine-advisory-committee-pfizer-2020-12">was one of many that came up in the course of Thursday's advisory committee meeting</a>. This is happening despite being the fact that the mayor, governor, and other local officials have asked President Trump to <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/nation/2020/07/13/portland-protester-injured-federal/">remove federal officers from the city</a>. The protests have inspired some national soul-searching about racism, but excessive force by both local and federal law enforcement officers remains a problem with no easy solution. — AFSexual harassment and bullying pervades the Washington NFL team. What a shock! No one who follows the Washington NFL team could be even mildly surprised to read the <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/sports/2020/07/16/redskins-sexual-harassment-larry-michael-alex-santos/?arc404=true">Washington Post story</a> exposing the sexual harassment, bullying, and generally seedy behavior that pervades the organization. One detail that tells you most of what you need to know about what a nightmare workplace it was: Women had to warn new hires to avoid a particular staircase, so that men wouldn't look up their skirts. Organizations mirror the personalities of their leaders (see under: Trump White House). Washington team owner Daniel Snyder has repeatedly proved himself to a petulant bully — a thin-skinned, small-minded, narcissistic monster. He's taken a beloved team that unified Washington and <a href="https://www.theringer.com/nfl/2019/12/24/21035742/washington-redskins-rock-bottom-dan-snyder">perverted into an incompetent joke</a> of a franchise. For 20 years, Snyder has hired badly, then undermined and maltreated his employees. So it's entirely predictable that he'd end up bringing in gross people and then looking away while they tormented their colleagues, especially young women. It's great that Washington has finally abandoned its racist nickname, but the team won't be loved again until it sheds its horrid owner. — DPMaybe, just maybe, we're getting better at ignoring Trump stunts<div type="image" title="trump regulations" height="1250" width="2500" msid="77026403" hostid="261"></div>Yesterday the White House press corp assembled on the White House lawn to hear what was billed as a speech about regulation. Like all Trump speeches these days, though, it was more about reelection. And there was spectacle. Two massive pickup trucks (one red, one blue) were parked on risers in front of the White House and laden with anvils. A crane bearing Trump's name lifted anvils off the red truck… you get the picture.Mercifully, most of America did not see this live. CNN and MSNBC did not air it. Fox News eventually cut away, and anchor Neil Cavuto fact-checked Trump, who had excoriated Obama for passing so much regulation. Most of that, Cavuto explained to his viewers, was due to the financial crisis and very necessary. This was not a Trump stunt that felt mean, or unhinged, or authoritarian, or bigoted like many of the stunts Trump pulls that upset his detractors. This stunt was pathetic.Later Thursday night Mary Trump, the President's niece who just wrote a tell-all about her family, told Rachel Maddow that her uncle first introduced her to Melania (his soon-to-be-wife) saying that Mary was the family drug addict (she did not do drugs) and that he had given her a job. Her point: The lies are always and for everything. Trump has stopped doing his job

<div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image"></div></div></div><ul class="summary-list"><li><a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/category/uber-for-business">Uber for Business</a> could be the margin padding the ride-hailing giant needs to turn around its falling stock price and finally turn a profit. </li><li>Ronnie Gurion, the unit's general manager, told Business Insider in an interview that he's focusing on more than traditional business travel.</li><li>With a team now numbering in the hundreds, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/category/uber">Uber</a>'s business-to-business segment is hoping to disrupt everything from corporate shuttles to non-emergency medical rides. </li><li><a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/?hprecirc-bullet">Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories.</a></li></ul>Uber is under massive pressure to turn a profit after an <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/uber-had-the-worst-first-day-dollar-loss-of-a-us-ipo-2019-5">underwhelming IPO earlier this year</a> and a <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/uber-third-quarter-earnings-losses-ridership-eats-delivery-2019-11?utm_source=markets&amp;utm_medium=ingest">$1.1 billion loss last quarter,</a> and the path to getting there remains unclear.When he last spoke to analysts following the third quarter, chief executive Dara Khosrowshahi hinted that some of the financial improvements would come from "premium product offerings," specifically citing the ride-hailing giant's enterprise product.Tasked with growing that lucrative segment - and siphoning off even more from the $1+ trillion that business travelers spend every year - is Ronnie Gurion, general manager of Uber for Business. Now 18 months into his tenure, he discussed his quickly growing team with Business Insider, and revealed some of the surprising areas its finding business-to-business success."Originally people would just tend to use Uber when they're on a business trip," he said by phone, "but we really needed to rethink how do we make the product and a set of services that we make available to companies to go after the broader set of ways that a company might want to use Uber's platform and products."Corporate shuttles, for example, are one thing Uber's out to replace thanks to complex geo-fencing for rides between offices and transit stations. Other initiatives include replacing rental cars with Uber vouchers, sending ride codes to job candidates, helping hospitals get patients to appointments on time by dispatching non-emergency rides, and even letting major retailers offer free rides instead of free shipping."We've really broadened the way that we think about B2B beyond just business travel," Gurion said.Business travelers, naturally, tend to gravitate toward more premium rides, too. Those higher margins could help the embattled company work its way toward profitability, as it tries to wean regular consumers off the coupons and discounts that helped Uber expand to more than 165 countries around the world.Wall Street analysts agree that the growing segment could be beneficial to Uber's bottom line.<div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image"></div></div></div>"Where we think ride-hailing companies have strong pricing power is in the B2B segment," Masha Kahn, an analyst at HSBC told clients last month. "Customers are less price-sensitive. Both Lyft and Uber are investing in deeper integration with expense management systems, corporate relationships and new verticals such as healthcare transportation."Gurion confirmed the rides could help pad margins."It's no surprise that when you're on a business trip and the company's paying for that ride," he said, "you may still want to be a good steward of the company's resources of course, but maybe instead of optimizing primarily for price, you may choose to optimize for convenience, for comfort or even privacy if you're dealing with, you know, work calls, et cetera."Six years into Uber for Business' life, the company for the first time this month shared individual metrics for the segment. Bookings now total more than $4 billion annually, a representative said, and in the third quarter posted a 65% annual growth rate. The company declined to share the size of the team, but Gurion noted it now numbers in the "multiple hundreds" of employees.But that growth may come with a price. Sustainability, even if less forefront than Lyft's similar efforts, was a key tenet of Uber's sales pitch to investors when it went public in May. Business rides largely aren't helping with that, especially in the face of numerous studies that showed ride-hailing services increasing urban gridlock.<div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image"></div></div></div>There might be "less people on pool" in the business segment, as Gurion puts it, but it's not all bleak. Increasingly, companies are looking to add bike or scooter offerings for their employees through Uber's "new mobility" unit that runs the JUMP brand, he said."That's probably more for a commute use case," Gurion said, alluding to his earlier example of corporate shuttles to public transportation. Health, in the form of "non-emergency" transport, remains one of the last holy grails for both companies. There's an estimated $15 billion market opportunity in getting patients to their appointments and reducing no-shows, Gurion said. So far, the division is growing 400% annually, Uber says.There's no word on what we might see in the future. Though Gurion noted the team now has salespeople in 20 countries, with self-service available anywhere the Uber app is live."Companies have a multifaceted relationship," he said, "and we are their preferred option for trying to solve a whole number of transportation and logistical challenges with our platform and with our technology. That is, if we were to look back on 2020 and think, "Wow! I can't believe that happened this year!" what might that be? To be clear, the surprises below aren't predictions, exactly. But if the events do occur, they could have big implications for investors and patients.The answers we got from the VCs included everything from big legislative changes in healthcare to <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/health-strategies-of-google-amazon-apple-and-microsoft-2019-11">companies like Amazon or</a> Walmart more directly owning pieces of the $3.6 trillion healthcare industry.Here's what surprises might lie ahead in 2020. <h2>US government actions could be the biggest surprises of 2020</h2>A common refrain of surprises venture investors think could rock 2020 was government action. For Venrock partner Bryan Roberts, having the government do something material in healthcare would be the biggest surprise. That could be anything on healthcare costs or drug prices that could change what Americans pay for their healthcare. It wouldn't, he said, include changes in which hospitals have to post their prices, <a href="https://www.hhs.gov/about/news/2019/11/15/trump-administration-announces-historic-price-transparency-and-lower-healthcare-costs-for-all-americans.html">a rule introduced by the Trump administration in 2019. </a>"I don't think anything material's going to happen," Roberts said. Similarly, Andreessen Horowitz general partner <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/andreessen-horowitz-vc-julie-yoo-healthcare-predictions-for-2020-2019-12">Julie Yoo</a> said she'd be surprised if "<a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-medicare-for-all-would-affect-us-healthcare-system-2019-8">Medicare for All</a>," the idea of a single-payer healthcare in the US, moves from an idea to a reality during the 2020 presidential election year. "If it actually happens, that'd be a huge shocker," Yoo said. "I would look back and be surprised if some version of Medicare for All or public options actually makes its way through legislation," he said. While presidential and congressional elections take place in November 2020, the officials elected won't begin their terms until 2021. In December, the House passed a bill backed by Democratic Speaker Nancy Pelosi aimed at lowering drug prices for Americans. Krishna Yeshwant, who leads GV's life-sciences team, said that the biggest surprise of 2020 could be if a bill like that were to pass. If it did, he said, it could dramatically reduce the number of new companies working on new approaches to treat diseases.<h2>Big tech gets more engrained in the healthcare industry</h2>Many of the surprises that the VCs thought could rock 2020 had everything to do with the looming presence of big tech companies who have been increasingly making their way into the healthcare industry over the past few years, as well as retailers like Walmart. For instance, Maverick managing director Ambar Bhattacharyya said a big surprise would be if Amazon, Apple, Walmart, or Google were to buy a health insurer. If that were to happen, he said, "I think the landscape will change significantly." That is, if the healthcare industry abandoned its push toward a more consumer-friendly market that pays for how well care is given, rather than how much of it is performed. "I think that the tailwinds on consumerism and the tailwinds on value based care are so strong. It is a matter of when not if," Jaffee said. "I would be shocked if the market flipped."Throughout 2019, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/next-recession-2020-economy-downturn-with-rest-of-world-socgen-2019-6">there were predictions that the market was headed for a recession in 2020</a>. NEA partner Blake Wu said said he'd be surprised if that were to play out. <div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"></div></div></div>ISS is a Danish company based in Copenhagen which specialises in logistics services, such as cleaning, catering, and building management.With <a href="http://uk.investing.com/equities/iss-a-s-company-profile" target="_blank">518,000 employees</a>, ISS is the fourth-largest employer in the world, and looks after landmarks like the Eiffel Tower in Paris and the Sagrada Familia in Barcelona. In Britain, it cleans the trains on the London Underground London and the Carlsberg brewery in Northampton, among the others.One year after going public on the stock market in Copenhagen, the company is in good shape: share prices are up some 30% from the IPO, and revenues for 2014 came to DKK 74.1 billion (£7 billion).ISS CEO Jeff Gravenhorst was in London last week and Business Insider sat down with him to ask him how he manages such a vast workforce. Here are his top three tips:<h3>1. Empower your staff </h3>The best way to manage a big workforce is to let them understand they are part of the company as much as the top manager. There is a gap between management and front line that can't be filled if one of the sides is not engaged. Rather than instructing the staff as if they were children, let them take pride in what they do by asking them to play a more active role."You have to run a company so that everybody has a dream, so not just my dream but their dream and the better you become at that, the more fun it is to come to work and the easier it becomes to run a lot of people," said Jeff.<h3>2. Hire local</h3><div class="KonaFilter image-container float_right"><div class="image on-image"></div></div>ISS operates directly in 50 countries and in 27 more through third-parties. "We don't have 50 Danes in the management," jokes Jeff. It is always better to hire local people because they know what is the reality on the ground, and they will be the face of your company. In some countries this policy is not always possible, and ISS needs to manage a workforce from different parts of the world: Its British employees, for example, speak 187 languages combined. <h3>2. Be afraid of complacency</h3>"Complacency is the worst in anything in life," says Jeff. Complacency gives you a false sense of assurance that, eventually, will drag your company down.Complacency creates a gap between leadership and employees and it prevents communication: "When you have 500,000 people working for you, you want them to know why they are doing what they are doing," says Jeff. That is the toughest part of leadership, is to get the message all the way out.Here is a lightly edited transcript of the conversation we had with Jeff.Business Insider: ISS has 520,000 employees, that is like managing a city as big as Belfast, how does it feel?Jeff Gravenhorst: From the way I look at it is even bigger than that, because there are the families of our workers: It is more of a society. It is a great privilege to have that kind of an impact. The way that the company is run is by understanding the importance of the individual: You clearly can run a business just focusing on delivering a task or you can run a business while you focus on delivering a purpose, and the purpose being a little bit bigger than the task. In a hospital are you cleaning the floor or are you healing patients? You have to run a company so that everybody has a dream, so not just my dream but their dream and the better you become at that, the more fun it is to come to work and the easier it becomes to run a lot of people. Leading 500,000 employees via micro management is not doable, the way you can do it is via dream building, purpose-led, and then it becomes easier. BI: Would you say ISS is decentralised? JG: What we do is described in three lines: First, we do service performance, which looks at the result. It is not what goes into it, but what comes out of it.Secondly, we are here to facilitate the customer's goals, so we are not there just to sweep the floor, we are here to create stories, and do it through people empowerment, and let me go back to it in a little bit. And finally the way we run a building is that we do it through self-delivery, so it has to be our own employees. We have an employee survey which we run once a year, with more than 207,000 employees every year. And we do it because the key driver in a successful company is the happiness or the wellbeing of our employees That is the best way to understand if the company is healthy or not.BI: How do you manage operations in 50 different countries and be successful in such different environments?JG: We do it by not having 50 Danes to run 50 operations: If the work is in China, it has to be by Chinese country managers, in Indonesia they have to be Indonesian. But most important, for me, is through behaviour. The behaviour and the values need to be the same, and then the staff need to be local. If your behaviour is instructing your employees with a whip, then you don't belong at ISS. But that is where this industry comes from, we're talking cleaning, it is a very hierarchical environment.We are different, we want to be working with the "why," we want to work through motivation, engagement, empowerment, and the values need to be the same. You need to sell your workers your dream: You might just sweep the dust on the floor, but if you do it at Airbus then you are building airplanes and you are actually sending people up in the air.BI: What is the thing you fear the most?JG: Complacency. I know it sounds … well, but from a business perspective, I do not fear too many things. The worst thing you can have in anything is life is complacency. And then complacency can lead to the fact that you don't understand if they know what you are doing. So when you have 500,000 people working for you, you want them to know why they are doing what they are doing. That is the toughest part of leadership, is to get the message all the way out. It is a big dream but it is the right approach, and that will also fight complacency. BI: Today the Treasury announced it would raise the minimum wage here in the <keyword id="6354868" type="COUNTRY" weightage="60" keywordseo="UK">UK</keyword>. What do you think of that?JG: I think it is a good thing, I think is good. It is our job to give the right salary to employees and we are clearly big supporters of the fact that employees can live off their wages. That is always a good thing. And then it is good that the entry jobs are getting a better payment.BI: On the other hand, ahead of the General Elections we hear demands for zero-hour contracts (in which employees have few rights and no guaranteed work hours) to be reformed or even abolished. I presume you use zero-hour contracts among your staff. What do you think of this issue?JG: Predominantly we prefer to use full time contracts. But again, you have to look at what is the service that is needed, what is required as part-timers, and also there are a lot of people who want to have a part-time contract, so the flexibility is good to have.Employee turn over is not a good for ISS: You have to recruit, train, develop, that is very costly to do, and for us is better to keep our staff. There is a better relationship and it works a longer time. So, of course the more we can do full-time the better. For example: One big trend in this industry in the last few years is to turn nighttime cleaning into daytime cleaning. By converting this you have a lot of benefits, you give employees an opportunity to get a normal job, so they can stay home with their families at nights. And they stay with ISS.BI: How many of your employees are foreign and how many are Britons? JG: We are quite proud that we are the entry job for many people: We can actually give many people an opportunity to start, to receive an education. So if you never had an opportunity to study and you come in as an immigrant, you can start working for us, in many countries we actually give language training. In Denmark we have 147 languages spoken out of 8,000 employees. In the UK it is 187 languages. We will of course, take pride of giving you that opportunity and then if you want you can stay with us and move with us. You don't have to have a good degree to make a career with ISS: If you start as a cleaner you can end up with my job, of course you have to take some education and work hard, but if you are willing to do so, there is a path all the way through. Opportunities are there to be taken.BI: How does it feel to manage such a big company from Denmark? Do you envy other CEOs who are based in London?JG: No, not really: I used to live here. No, but jokes apart, I think the most important thing about the country is the culture, and there is an element of Nordic culture in what we do. It is the culture of believing in the individual, that everybody has their rights, and that everybody has respect for each other. And I guarantee you, in Denmark whether I am a CEO or I am a cleaner the difference between us is really not that big, and that is the same in our company: We have a saying that is "mind the gap:" You always have to think that whatever you come up as a dream, as an idea, it can't be delivered it if they don't deliver it on the front line.
