Some videos with the hashtag #lavendermarriage on TikTok have amassed <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://vm.tiktok.com/ZGdeFu9BW/">millions of views</a> on the platform.Robbie Scott, a TikToker and musician with 300,000 followers, recently posted a video asking for "applications for a lavender marriage" because he wanted to live with someone so he could afford mortgage payments, utilities, and taxes."You can mess around with whoever you want, whenever you want, I don't care," he said in the video, which has received <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://vm.tiktok.com/ZGdeYrKj4/">more than five million views</a>. "In fact, I encourage it. Have fun. Live your best life."<h2 id="1c4be94f-a91b-485c-9850-ac0905f2ba7c">A modern-day lavender marriage</h2>Traditionally, a lavender marriage was just that — a legally binding marriage.Edward Reese, a gender and sexuality expert at the LGBTQ+ dating app Taimi, told Business Insider that this can still be true. It can bring benefits such as inheritance rights, childcare, tax breaks, better mortgage rates, and primary care if one of you gets ill."People can do it in case one or both partners don't have family or have gone no contact, and their lavender spouse becomes not only their best friend but a legal family member," he said.But the modern version of a lavender marriage could also simply be a spoken agreement between two people to live their lives like a married couple, without the sex.This is different from having a roommate, Reese added, who can move out of a shared household any minute, whenever they choose."The couple in the lavender marriage is expected to get through all the conflicts, discuss and compromise," he said. "It's a union with commitment, love, and loyalty, and all of these can be not romantic."Christine DeVore, a licensed clinical psychologist who is the director of adult and couples services at Birch Psychology, told BI that a lavender marriage offers a practical solution to some of life's burdens."It's a way to ease financial stress while still being independent," she said.While somewhat tongue-in-cheek, Scott's video on TikTok prompted other Gen Zers to share their thoughts. "Even though no attraction is involved, you can gain much more from being physically close to your lavender married partner than being close to a friend or to a one-night stand."<h2 id="0b761dc2-b1a7-47c3-8360-c29646ae62d2">A deeper issue</h2>It's unclear exactly how many lavender marriages are taking place, and to what extent the conversations on TikTok reflect a wider trend. But they do hint at more serious societal issues.Dating is still big business. Dating companies generated more than <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/dating-apps-find-love-romance-online-tinder-match-total-scam-2024-10">$5 billion</a> in 2023 alone. Match Group generated annual revenues of more than $3.4 billion, while Bumble had revenues of $1.1 billion last year.But growth appears to be slowing. Match Group's paying users fell by around 6% in the first quarter of the year. It is now valued at $9.51 billion, down from $50 billion in 2021. Meanwhile, Bumble's value has fallen by around 90% since it went public in 2021. It is now worth around $822 million.That may be because Gen Zers are <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/gen-z-dating-trend-online-apps-friends-romantic-partners-relationships-2023-3">turning away from </a>dating apps, with some thinking the apps now miss the point of what made them fun in the first place — <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/tinder-hinge-okcupid-operator-match-sued-making-dating-apps-addictive-2024-2">going after profits</a> rather than real connections.Others are tired of modern dating culture, with <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/fancy-first-date-no-connection-ghosted-2023-8">ghosting</a>, catfishing, and some prospective partners not showing up to dates at all.One creator, Cleopatra, who is 23, told BI that what really appealed to her is the community aspect, where women can live without fear of being hurt or abused."I think the majority want change," Cleopatra said. Lavender marriages could just be furthering this trend.<h2 id="d50f74e2-7f51-4604-8646-2d542838f5a1">Boundaries are important</h2>For young people who are reconsidering how to approach relationships, a lavender marriage "can be a great replacement," Reese said. People are more commonly discovering they are aromantic or asexual, he added, which questions the pop culture norm of focusing on straight sex and love for so long.There are challenges, however. DeVore and Roos warned that emotional complexities can arise from such entanglements, and open communication about boundaries and feelings is vital for it to work.For example, the rules of a lavender marriage may be vague, meaning there could be the potential for upset down the line. Partners may disagree on what is allowed outside the relationship and what isn't and have different ideas of what defines cheating.Roos said this is when lavender marriages can show their weak side, triggering feelings of jealousy and sadness if one partner starts feeling left out.The arrangement may also not suit both people forever, such as if one decides to pursue a romantic relationship."What felt OK when talking things through before, or at the beginning, of the marriage, might therefore, later on not feel OK at all," Roos said.Ultimately, she said challenges and conflicts can arise even in the most committed partnerships, DeVore said."While a lavender marriage may offer certain advantages, it does not guarantee a lifetime of happiness and fulfillment," she said."It's important to remember that no relationship, including a lavender marriage, is immune to heartache."

<ul class="summary-list"><li>On a trip to Melbourne, Adrian Chia envisioned a holiday home to unplug from the world.</li><li>He sold his IT business and partnered with two friends to build Big Tiny, a tiny house startup.</li></ul>How nice would it be to leave everything behind, unplug from the world, and relax abroad?This thought lingered in Adrian Chia's mind after a two-week family vacation exploring the Great Ocean Road in Melbourne in 2016.Shortly after returning home to Singapore, he floated the concept of <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/millennial-city-life-quits-job-build-tiny-house-wood-denmark-2024-9">living an unplugged life</a> by his friend Dave Ng, whom he'd met in his 20s during mandatory national service."We were just chitchatting, but Dave started thinking about it seriously," Chia, now 43, told Business Insider. Ng came up with the idea of creating a tiny house on wheels — a mobile house that could be easily relocated if a particular location did not attract guests.In 2017, the pair decided to sell their businesses — Chia had been working in IT and Ng in waste management — and start a <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-to-build-own-tiny-home-company-plans-2023-4">tiny house business</a> called Big Tiny. In return, they managed the hotel side of the business by renting the unit back from the buyer. They either rented the tiny house for two years and paid 8% a year or five years and paid 10% a year. Although the movement has taken off in <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/tiny-house-movement-future-2021-1">countries like the US</a> and <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/tiny-home-tube-shape-surprising-things-europe-slube-photos-2023-2">Germany</a>, it has been less popular in Singapore.In 2021, an opportunity arose for Big Tiny to set up houses in Singapore under a government initiative promoting innovative business ideas.The government awarded Big Tiny state land, for which the company pays rent, to build their <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/stay-tiny-home-remote-lazarus-island-singapore-2024-8">tiny houses on Lazarus Island</a> — one of the eight Southern Islands in Singapore."We jumped on it," Chia said.In an email response to BI, a representative from the Sentosa Development Corporation, an organization under Singapore's Ministry of Trade and Industry, said the initiative aimed to complement the existing environment of Lazarus Island by introducing "light-touch" recreational uses.Additionally, the response noted that Big Tiny's houses were equipped with sustainable features, which were in line with their goal of reducing vacationers' carbon footprint on the island.The government also awarded another company a chance to <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/luxury-tent-glamping-into-the-woods-lazarus-island-singapore-2024-9">build nine tents nearby.</a>Since opening the tiny house resort in April 2023, Chia said, it has been running on an average of about 90% occupancy. In America, when you're charged with a crime, you're afforded the right to face your accuser. But what happens when your accuser isn't human?In 2022, over five days in Akron, Ohio, jurors in the murder trial of a 19-year-old named Adarus Black heard from 17 witnesses, none of whom could place Black at the scene of the drive-by shooting that killed Na'Kia Crawford. They viewed surveillance footage, none of which showed Black in the car from which the bullet was fired. They were told the police had tried and failed to find Black's DNA in the car.Witnesses saw Black with the driver of the car at a party shortly before the shooting. One witness testified that he saw Black leave with the driver; another witness said they saw the driver with someone but couldn't identify the person. The car was seen speeding past Crawford at the time of the shooting. But prosecutors had no direct evidence tying Black to the location of the murder, an Ohio appellate court later said.What they did have was a secret weapon: the testimony of Adam Mosher and his AI-powered crime-fighting tool, Cybercheck. Mosher testified in court that Cybercheck, using a million lines of code and 740 proprietary algorithms, spent 21 days poring over hundreds of terabytes of publicly available data to triangulate Black's cellphone at the time of the murder and place him within a few feet of the crime scene with more than 90% accuracy. Mosher told jurors that his technology could detect when a phone pings a nearby WiFi network in a fully automated process that could be performed without the phone itself. A lawyer for Black who had been appointed by the court four days before the start of the trial never questioned these claims.Jurors deliberated for less than four hours before returning a guilty verdict. Black's attorneys, who interviewed members of the jury after the verdict, <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.documentcloud.org/documents/25032836-adarus-black-petition-for-post-conviction-relief">claimed in a posttrial motion</a> that the jurors said they would not have convicted Black without Mosher and his Cybercheck report. Mosher and Cybercheck were the "sole basis for conviction," Black's attorneys wrote.Black is one of many criminal defendants whose fates were determined in part by Cybercheck's secret algorithm. The program has popped up in cases in Colorado, New York, and Florida. On its website, the company claims to have "proven success" in more than 300 cases, including 209 homicide cases. As <a target="_blank" href="https://www.nbcnews.com/news/crime-courts/ai-tool-used-thousands-criminal-cases-facing-legal-challenges-rcna149607">NBC News said</a> in a story about Cybercheck's widespread use, at least one prosecutor in New York claimed in a legal filing that it had been used in nearly 8,000 cases.Business Insider has identified more than 100 law-enforcement agencies that have contracted with Cybercheck, including police departments in Philadelphia, Houston, and Denver.But serious questions have been raised about the program and its reliability. At least one attorney in Akron has called out inconsistencies in Mosher's résumé, including trials he claims to have testified in that never happened and a university peer review that was never performed. In one case, a judge threw out Cybercheck evidence. Prosecutors in two others have withdrawn Cybercheck reports. Mosher could face contempt-of-court charges in another case. And the sheriff's department for Summit County, Ohio, is investigating whether he provided false information in court, according to two people familiar with the matter.Little is known about Mosher, who launched Cybercheck in 2016. An archived version of his LinkedIn page, which has since been deleted, lists two years of education in media arts and film at a for-profit art school in Canada, three years of education in "Police Science and Law" at Fleming College in Toronto, and certifications in computer forensic analysis and ethical hacking. (In court documents, a defense lawyer said Mosher had no college degree and had never served in law enforcement.) It also says he worked as a security director and forensic consultant before founding Cybercheck.Mosher stepped down as <a target="_blank" href="https://cybercheck.ai/press-release/">the CEO of Cybercheck</a> in September, transitioning into the role of CTO. He was replaced by a former Salesforce employee, Chris Ramsey, who left the company a few months later.In June, Mosher was removed as a director of Cybercheck, according to business documents obtained by Business Insider. It's unclear whether he still works for the company he founded.Adam Mosher and Cybercheck did not reply to a request for comment.AI technology has at times been ascribed almost magical capabilities. It can write computer code, analyze legal documents, generate hit pop songs, and fake photos indistinguishable from reality. It's said to be coming for all our jobs, from warehouse worker to Hollywood actor.Many of these claims have been hard to verify. AI models, with their mountains of training data and billions of parameters, are often black boxes. Even their creators can't always say exactly what's going on inside them. That's left an opening for some who might seek to use the halo of artificial intelligence as a cover for technology that's less than reliable.Police departments and prosecutors across the country are increasingly relying on AI software to <a target="_blank" href="https://innocenceproject.org/when-artificial-intelligence-gets-it-wrong/">recognize faces</a>, <a target="_blank" href="https://cu-citizenaccess.org/2023/12/champaigns-trial-run-of-gunshot-detection-program-fires-blanks/">detect gunshots</a>, <a target="_blank" href="https://thehill.com/business/personal-finance/4571982-ai-black-box-legal-system/">forecast crime</a>, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.theguardian.com/technology/2024/mar/25/san-jose-homelessness-ai-detection">spot homeless encampments</a>, and <a target="_blank" href="https://www.brennancenter.org/our-work/analysis-opinion/documents-reveal-how-dc-police-surveil-social-media-profiles-and-protest">generate lists of activists, "thought leaders," and "disrupters"</a> to be targeted for surveillance.But defense attorneys face an uphill battle in trying to challenge the reliability of evidence generated using AI. After all, you can't cross-examine a black-box model. Though prosecutors are generally required to turn over all evidence during the discovery process, companies like Cybercheck can argue the algorithms and training data that power these AI tools are proprietary trade secrets of the private companies that develop them and therefore can't be disclosed.In many cases, prosecutors themselves don't even have access to the source code and haven't reviewed the underlying technology. It then falls to local judges, who likely don't have doctorates in computer science or an understanding of high-level matrix math, to decide whether to grant access to the defense.In Summit County, Ohio, prosecutors were using Cybercheck for nearly two years before someone started asking questions. That someone was Donald Malarcik, a defense attorney in Akron who has represented eight clients in Summit County who've been prosecuted using Cybercheck evidence.He first encountered the software in 2022 when he took on the case of Javion Rankin, who was charged with murder in the death of Tyraye Carter in 2020. In that case, court filings say, a Cybercheck report linked Rankin to an email address — babygirlcrawford2003@yahoo.com — and an IP address that together placed Rankin at the scene of the crime."I hired some digital-forensic experts, and they started looking at it, and they're like, I don't know what the hell this thing is," Malarcik told BI. "The first thing they say is let's get access to it." Malarcik said that the judge in the case ordered prosecutors to turn over the source code for Cybercheck — but that prosecutors refused."The prosecutor says no, we don't have it, we can't get it, and Adam Mosher won't give it to you," he said.Malarcik went looking for other cases where Mosher's technology had appeared. That led him to a defense attorney named Eric Zale, who was representing a client in Boulder, Colorado, facing evidence generated by Cybercheck.Malarcik and Zale agreed to pursue a similar strategy. They asked their judges to issue orders requiring Mosher to provide comprehensive details about his past testimonies, including case names, dates, and locations where he had served as an expert witness.While he initially claimed during testimony in court to have been an expert witness in more than a dozen cases, Mosher could identify only two cases, both in Canada, where he had testified, according to transcripts of the Ohio proceeding. Zale dispatched a private investigator to contact prosecutors in both cases. They disputed Mosher's recollections — and one said no criminal trial had ever occurred."Mr. Mosher has not testified as a witness (expert or otherwise) on one of our files (in trial or any other type of proceeding)," Shara Munn, a New Brunswick crown prosecutor, wrote in an email attached <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.documentcloud.org/documents/25032836-adarus-black-petition-for-post-conviction-relief">as an exhibit in a court filing</a>. She wrote that the first time she'd even heard of Mosher was when he approached law enforcement of his own accord offering his services as an expert witness. The suspect in that case was an employee of a company Mosher had done consulting work for. No one was ever charged."Mr. Mosher has apparently testified he provided expert evidence on one of my cases. This is not accurate," Richelle Freiheit, a Calgary crown prosecutor, wrote in a similar email attached as an exhibit in a court filing. She wrote that Mosher reached out to her office offering a trove of data he said was evidence of child-sexual-abuse material. The suspect in that case was Mosher's brother-in-law, Freiheit wrote."Technicians were unable to read or analyze it or locate anything pertaining to CSAM," she wrote. The defendant in that case pleaded guilty on the first day of trial, and no one ever testified, the email said.Mosher never produced transcripts of his testimony in either case, even after a judge ordered him to do so.The prosecutor in the Colorado case, after learning about these inconsistencies in Mosher's story, dropped the charges against Zale's client."Based upon information recently obtained, the People no longer have a reasonable likelihood of conviction should this case proceed to trial," Meghan "Breck" Roesch, a deputy district attorney, <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.documentcloud.org/documents/25032836-adarus-black-petition-for-post-conviction-relief#document/p35">wrote in a legal filing at the time</a>.Back in Akron, the judge in Rankin's case ordered the Cybercheck evidence excluded after prosecutors failed to turn over the source code.The "defendant cannot prepare a defense when denied access to an undisclosed proprietary software program and framework that cannot be replicated," she <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.documentcloud.org/documents/25032837-order-to-exclude-in-rankin">wrote in her ruling.</a> The filing also included screenshots of a Google search she performed in which she was able to link the email address in the Cybercheck report, babygirlcrawford2003@yahoo.com, to a disc-golf player in Nevada and the IP address to a computer in Pennsylvania.But unlike Roesch in Colorado, Ohio prosecutors weren't ready to give up on Cybercheck. They've appealed the judge's decision, arguing that because they themselves don't have Mosher's underlying code, they aren't required to turn it over. Rankin, who's still on trial, has been released while the appeal is pending.Malarcik, for his part, isn't finished with Mosher and Cybercheck."Now I just find every murder case in Summit County that's using Cybercheck and I volunteer," he said. "I say I'm going to join your defense team pro bono. I won't charge a dime, and we're going to stop this nonsense."One of those cases was the murder trial of 61-year-old Phillip Mendoza. On the evening of August 2, 2020, gunshots rang out on Fifth Avenue in East Akron, Ohio. Kimberly Thompson and Brian James were struck in the legs as they exited their car, sustaining non-life-threatening injuries. Thompson's 20-month-old grandson, Tyree Halsell, was struck in the head and later died at a local hospital.Two years later, at the request of the Akron Police Department, Cybercheck's automated system, ostensibly without any human in the loop, searched publicly available data and issued a report that placed Mendoza's phone at the location of the shooting with 93.13% accuracy. The only problem? The report, a copy of which was attached to a court filing, claims Mendoza's phone was at the crime scene on August 20, 2020, 18 days after the shooting.This went unnoticed for four months, until the police department informed Cybercheck of the discrepancy on January 24, 2023, according to <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.documentcloud.org/documents/25032831-mendoza-objection-to-mtc-2-1-output">documents included in a court filing.</a> That day Cybercheck issued a word-for-word identical report, citing the same data with the same 93.13% accuracy rate. But the date was changed to August 2, 2020. One month later, Mendoza was arrested and charged with murder.The Akron Police Department did not reply to a request for comment.Vestige Digital Investigations, a forensics company Malarcik hired to review Cybercheck's evidence, submitted a report to the court calling into question "the accuracy and legitimacy of the CyberCheck system" for producing two identical reports with different dates. "It is implausible that the same number of cyber profile hits, for the same cyber profile, was picked up by the same wireless routers at the same time on two different days," the report concluded.In a motion in Mendoza's trial, Malarcik <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.documentcloud.org/documents/25032831-mendoza-objection-to-mtc-2-1-output">also challenged Mosher's claims</a> about Cybercheck's use in another case in Ohio. Mosher had testified in two Summit County murder trials about using Cybercheck to help locate a suspect hiding in a tree in Portage County. In court transcripts, Malarcik said that he spoke to the head of the criminal division in Portage County, Steve Michniak, who had never heard of Mosher or Cybercheck, and that the details of the homicide Mosher described didn't match any of the three homicides in Portage County that year. Malarcik said Michinaik told him that officers did find a suspect in a tree, but not as part of a homicide investigation, and that the officers found the suspect with a drone using an infrared camera.During Mendoza's trial, Mosher testified that Cybercheck had been peer-reviewed by scientists at the University of Saskatchewan, a claim that the university later denied."The University of Saskatchewan was not involved in the creation of this document nor did they create any content for this document," a university representative wrote in an email attached to a court filing.Following that revelation, the judge in the case referred Mosher to Summit County's sheriff's department, which opened an investigation into whether he provided false information to the court, two people familiar with the matter said.When reached for comment, William Holland at the department said he could not comment on an ongoing investigation.Prosecutors in Mendoza's case ultimately decided to withdraw Cybercheck's evidence before it could be subjected to a hearing to determine its reliability. Mendoza is still on trial.Indeed, Summit County prosecutors seem to be souring somewhat on Mosher and his model. They've withdrawn Cybercheck evidence in at least two cases. Nearly two years after they began using Mosher's company, prosecutors said in court documents that they were looking for experts to study the validity of its evidence."Not to put too blunt a point on it," one prosecutor, Brian Stano, said in court transcripts, "Mr. Mosher, great at software, great at open-source intelligence, a work in progress on the law."The Summit County Prosecutor's Office declined to comment when reached by BI.Adarus Black remains in a medium-security prison on the shores of Lake Erie, serving a life sentence for murder. He's appealing the conviction, arguing that his lawyer failed him at trial by not challenging Mosher's testimony.His lawyer would have had little time to challenge anything — he was appointed only four days before the start of the trial. Before the trial began, according to a court transcript, the judge warned Black that he was facing a new kind of evidence, "something that's a little more unusual than we typically see in trial." Black's attorney responded that he had more than 20 years of experience handling murder cases and had "a good idea of what to expect and how to handle the case."Black's attorneys did not reply to a request for comment.It's unclear how many others may be behind bars because of Cybercheck evidence that was never rigorously scrutinized."AI is so new, and there's so much hype," Malarcik said. But those lists of apartments, that's public access, so it doesn't have to be a Dartmouth student who lives there," Tatum, 30, told BI.<div type="image" title="A small table with two chairs by a window." height="2268" width="3024" msid="113177241" hostid="261" sizebytes="505404"></div>It was a temporary arrangement — and a way to have an official address in Vermont — while they continued looking for proper housing in the area.<h2 id="166f404f-3cde-46fc-ae2f-8d9a4d73dd18">A fixer-upper within their budget</h2>When they chanced upon the listing for a one-bedroom, one-bathroom <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/diy-old-home-renovation-award-millennial-couple-before-after-photos-2023-3">fixer-upper</a> in the small town of Pomfret, it was love at first sight."I thought it would be perfect for us," Taylor, who is an artist, said. "At the time, it wasn't a house, so I didn't see it set up in a residential way. It was not lived in for at least, I want to say, about a decade or more."<div type="image" title="The exterior of the house." height="2268" width="3024" msid="113177239" hostid="261" sizebytes="841888"></div>The 650-square-foot cottage was being used as an office for a local business, but Taylor saw its potential despite that."I saw the beauty of the natural lighting, there was a lot of sunlight. It was initially listed for $225,000, but the price had been steadily decreasing."Not very popular on the market as far as a one-bedroom house, but we wanted a small house and it was perfect for when the price was reduced," Taylor said.The couple bought the property for $160,000 in March 2021. It took them about three to four months to close on the house, and moving in felt good.<div type="image" title="A man standing in front of a laptop in the kitchen." height="2268" width="3024" msid="113177242" hostid="261" sizebytes="202988"></div>"We packed up and moved a dozen or more times during the summer of 2020, so to be able to do that for the last time and unpack the boxes — knowing that we had no intentions to repack them — was a great relief," Tatum, who works in parks and recreation, said.<h2 id="ad977788-cd9b-4c9a-a8ee-3d8b01ec23b8">Turning the house into a home</h2>Although Tatum did some of the renovation work himself, the couple also hired a carpenter to assist them with some projects.The first thing the couple did was fix up the sliding door that leads to their porch. At that point, the couple was also expecting their first child, and that served as another form of motivation to improve things around the house.While they're still on the grid, the couple also invested in solar panels for their home."I think it's a good investment since we'll save a lot of money over time. And I think it's an indication that we intend to be here for the long run," Tatum said.In an effort to be more sustainable, most of the items in the home are either gifted, thrifted, or free.<div type="image" title="A woman standing in the kitchen." height="2268" width="3024" msid="113177248" hostid="261" sizebytes="304360"></div>"I encourage people always to use what's there, whether it's salvage or free materials, instead of going out and trying to buy a bunch of stuff to set your home and garden up," Taylor said.The couple's home is located on the main road of their town, which consists of about 1,000 people spread out across miles of mostly farmland. They're 20 minutes from the nearest hospital and about an hour and a half from the city of Burlington.While they have neighbors right across the street, the population density in the town is low."So our neighbors are right across the street from us. For context, they have about 75 acres, and their neighbors have 500. And we live on about two and a half acres here," Tatum said.<div type="image" title="The bedroom." height="1594" width="1284" msid="113177236" hostid="261" sizebytes="181652"></div>What the couple loves about their home is the amount of privacy it affords them, without being too secluded."Maybe they could hear through the walls in our Brooklyn apartment, but if we needed help and we were to yell loudly here, our neighbors would hear us," Tatum added.The couple also manages a <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.hipcamp.com/en-US/land/vermont-brookside-camping-full-joy-farm-pw1hdp56?adults=1&amp;children=0&amp;srid=38340018-9c35-4565-98cf-787ac858036f">small campsite</a> on their land where people can come and enjoy the outdoors. There's a firepit where guests can start a campfire, and a composting toilet is available. And here, I drive 10 miles to work every day," Tatum said.The way they interact with their community is also very different."In New York City, we're not waving at everyone we pass by because if you did that, you'd go insane. It's too many people, and not everyone is your friend there," Tatum said. "But here in Vermont, everyone waves at you, and you learn to wave back. A year later, the panicked texts shared in that "small group chat" — along with other chats with cutesy names like "Donation Processing" and "People of the House" (the presumably absolutely insufferable people living in Bankman-Fried's $35 million penthouse) — comprised some of the most damning evidence against him and helped lead to a swift guilty verdict on <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/jury-sam-bankman-fried-guilty-seven-counts-fraud-manhattan-trial-2023-10">seven counts of fraud</a>.Though he may be the first person to serve up to 110 years in prison for doing so, Bankman-Fried is far from the first person to perpetrate a group-chat faux pas. From planning Thanksgiving dinner to the run on Silicon Valley Bank to national-security leaks, from secret threads with <a target="_blank" href="https://www.elle.com/culture/career-politics/a45459012/democratic-women-governors-friendship/">Democratic women governors</a> to <a target="_blank" href="https://www.wired.com/story/telegram-hamas-israel-conflict/#intcid=_wired-verso-hp-trending_dfdf5d83-b27f-45e7-8815-a459b552d980_popular4-1">Hamas militants</a> to the tromboners of a <a target="_blank" href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/parenting/2023/10/30/teen-group-texts-rules/">middle-school</a> marching band, the group chat is now the room where it happens, for better and worse. People are struggling with the endlessly pinging ubiquity of the group chat. A <a target="_blank" href="https://www.securedatarecovery.com/blog/group-messaging-feels-like-job#Americans%E2%80%99_group_messaging_habits">recent poll</a> of 1,005 US adults found the average American spends 26 minutes a day reading and responding to group chats. Some two-thirds said they feel overwhelmed by them, and 42% say keeping up with them feels like a part-time job. "Group Chat Culture Is Out of Control," an article in The Atlantic decried in September. "57 Messages in One Day. The Group Text Has Gone Off the Rails," read a Wall Street Journal headline in October. In early November, a man in Indonesia was reportedly suspected of stabbing and killing his friend after the friend removed him from a WhatsApp group chat about motorcycles.It doesn't have to be like this. As a public proselytizer of group chats and all the chaos and high-stakes, potentially friendship-, career-, company-, and government-ending texts that come with them, I can't stand to see the name of group chats smeared and watch people make egregious chat gaffes any longer. A century ago, Emily Post tried to set order to the frenetic melting pot of a young American nation with her book "Etiquette in Society, in Business, in Politics, and at Home." Well, society, business, politics, and home life have all entered the group chat. For us to survive and thrive as humans, it's time to agree on the Definitive Etiquette of the Group Chat. Set your phones to Do Not Disturb for the next few minutes. In advance, you're welcome.If 57 unread messages is, as The Wall Street Journal put it, "off the rails," then I must be somewhere in the ravine, flipped over, and taking on water as I burst into flames. Fifty-seven messages (sincerest apologies, Ms. Post) can constitute one rigorous morning toilet session. Sometimes I come home to 57 unread messages after my 20-minute round-trip drive to drop my daughter off at day care. In October alone, I woke up to unread counts from a single chat numbering in the hundreds on multiple occasions (a chat with several of my friends who don't have kids). Beyond that chat, some of my most active group chats include one with my high-school friends, another with college friends, and another with friends from the college I dropped out of. There's one with close friends living in the Netherlands who have kids the same age as mine, and another with close friends in Rome who have kids the same age as mine. One with my dad and sister and our spouses, and one with just my dad and sister. One with my old bandmates to trade jokes and reminisce about tours and records and shows of yore, and one with my current bandmates to trade jokes and discuss rehearsals and upcoming shows. There's one to piss and moan about the Mets (though, like the Amazins, that one is only active between April and July), and one to piss and moan about the New York Giants, which is laden with more profanity and sadness than I am comfortable to admit publicly. There's one each for a pair of fantasy football leagues I play in, despite the fact I have almost no interest in fantasy football; I'm mostly in the leagues for the group chats that come with them. There are others, of course. In fact, when I think about it, my wife and two others are the only people I regularly text one-on-one anymore.The ultimate appeal of group chats — their necessity, really — is that they've become the only social media that's actually social. It wasn't always this way. Social media was originally conceived, publicly, at least, to foster connection. Mark Zuckerberg once promised that Facebook would "give people the power to share and make the world more open and connected." Twitter vowed to "serve the public conversation." But connection has long since given way to the attention economy on most platforms, between thinking in terms of tweets, seeing the world for its 'gramability, and slipping into the infinite scroll of TikTok. Group chats are now the rare place to gather that isn't gamified or monetized, where sharing the perfect meme to dunk on your friend's horrifying first date won't be drowned out by ads for Adidas and antidepressants and an unhinged rant from some blue-check neo-Nazi.In other words, while the rest of social media doubles down in what The New Yorker writer Hua Hsu calls the "<a target="_blank" href="https://www.newyorker.com/magazine/2023/03/20/what-conversation-can-do-for-us">age of the amygdala</a>," group chats give us the space to engage all the other parts of our brain, a chance to listen and be heard and engage in actual conversation and community-building.Over time, the micro-communities of group chats develop their own shorthand. There are jokes that reference this thing or that from years and tens of thousands of texts ago, some note that has become part of the thread's shared vernacular. Sometimes, the jokes can stretch a touch too far, seeping into the real world, as was the case when one of my group chats incorporated as an LLC earlier this year. Why? Because it was hilarious. At least it was to us. The chats also codify their own social strata. There's the person who shares the best memes; the person who always takes the joke one text too far; the boomer who types in all caps, uses proper punctuation, and signs their name to the text. Me? I'm the guy who feels like he has to like every meme shared in our threads. Group chats can become overwhelming, of course, especially as they creep into other apps and especially as they often duplicate participants. But when you think of them as a conduit by which we stay connected to our favorite people, to laugh as though we were all crowded into a booth at the local bar together, or even to learn and develop relationships with people we don't know that well, it's hard to hate on the group chat.(Not to mention the fact that you can, you know, just leave group chats, as my father often does from our family thread.)It's time for us all to embrace the ping. And if you can't, learn how to mute your phone, you Luddite. But like America's interstate system or the number of times you can wear jeans before washing them, there have to be rules. What was once the Wild West of interpersonal communication is now becoming the Tucson your parents are thinking of retiring to. And even Tucson has rules.The following rules have been crowdsourced from my own group chats. They work for any group. Follow them religiously if you don't want to become the next Sam Bankman-Fried. Also, try and avoid creating a multibillion-dollar fake-money fraud scheme. The rules apply to consenting adults only. For example, a recent Washington Post story on the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/parenting/2023/10/30/teen-group-texts-rules/">unwritten rules of teen group chats</a> warns, "Don't say anything you wouldn't want screenshotted." This is sage advice for the social barbarism of high school. This is terrible advice for adults, and, if followed, would maybe keep you out of trouble but would definitively neuter the fun and intimacy of the group chat.<h2>The official rules of the group chat</h2>1. The perfect group chat size is six people. Don't let it exceed 12.A group chat is like a table at a restaurant. Six makes for freewheeling conversation over candlelight where everyone can feel like they have an equal stake. It also gives everyone a chance to step back if they're not feeling it that day. Beyond eight, chatter becomes more and more rowdy, performative, and splintered. Also, a group chat's vitality is inversely proportional to the number of lurkers in the chat, and more people always means more lurkers. 2. Mute group chats with more than 12 people. For both your psyche and for the greater good. The texts aren't going anywhere.3. She even learned that he and his friend were spending all day sending posts of random women to each other in their DMs."It started a lot of deep-rooted, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.insider.com/guides/health/mental-health/low-self-esteem">self-esteem issues</a> because, before that, I had never even really thought about comparing myself to other women," Segposyan, now 23, said. "It was just: Other women are attractive, but I can be attractive in my own way."None of the women in her now ex-boyfriend's chat looked anything like her, she noticed: Blonde, white, "All-American," compared to Segposyan, who is Latina.Segposyan said she confronted him about the issue "many, many, many times," and he responded with "classic" excuses:"It must've been an accident""I just scroll and don't even pay attention to what I'm liking."And, "I didn't even realize I followed them."But, as he realized those excuses wouldn't work, he became defensive, Segposyan said, turning the issue back on her: "Why should it even matter? But, as <a target="_blank" href="https://www.insider.com/what-is-onlyfans-banning-content-work-porn-ban-history-sex-2021-9">OnlyFans</a> models proliferate on the platform, advertising customizable, girl-next-door erotic content on social media, a peculiar phenomenon appears to be getting worse.Someone, often a straight man (but not always), has an Instagram following list flooded with random, beautiful, scantily-clad women they don't even know.Concerned partners or potential partners — usually, but not always women — take to online forums to ask netizens if this is okay or if their insecurities and frustrations are valid.Some men defend themselves: It's just the laws of attraction. It's just a random girl on Instagram. It's not cheating, god forbid. "<a target="_blank" href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SF7_tlg6hHk&amp;t=25s">We're just normal men. We're just innocent men.</a>"But dating experts told Business Insider that digging your heels in will naturally strike up questions and even red flags to potential partners."I think if I was trying to date someone and I was looking at what he was really into and it was so different from me or if it was all overtly sexy … I'd definitely wonder why is he doing that?" Rochelle Peachey, owner of the international dating site <a target="_blank" href="https://www.iloveyouraccent.com/accent-blog/?p=312">ILoveYourAccent</a>, said. "Why does he need to do that? Are you hoping to meet one of them? Do you pay for their services? It would bother me."Peachey told Business Insider that following a lot of random hot-girl accounts could set off early warning signs for women, making men lose out on a potential partner.Similarly, <a target="_blank" href="https://michelleg.com/">Michelle Galarza</a>, a relationship coach and matchmaker, told Business Insider that having a digital <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/binders-full-of-women-romney-obama-empty-binder-republicans-2012-10">binder full of women</a> may make a potential partner question what a man's intentions are and whether he is truly looking for a serious relationship."For me, there's a disconnect there because I am seeing your feed that is only about women, which leads me to think you're just wanting to hook up and also you're objectifying women," Galarza said.<h2>Where to draw the line</h2>To be clear, dating experts say there's nothing wrong with men being physically attracted to other women and that they may, at times, seek that out on social media, especially single men. The problem, they say, lies in the extent of the man's habits."There are absolutely guys who go overboard here," <a target="_blank" href="https://www.instagram.com/datingbyblaine/">Blaine Anderson</a>, a dating coach for men, told Business Insider. "If you're a single guy, and you're spending more time drooling over women you'll never meet than actual dating, something is wrong."Seposyan told Business Insider that she understands that women may algorithmically pop up on a man's social media feed and that he'll want to peek at their accounts — the same way a man might turn his eyes to look at a woman passing him on the street.The issue for her is when a man actively chooses to follow multiple women on his account — so that women appear every time he opens Instagram — and he willfully disregards his partner's feelings even after she expresses concerns about it."I'm very aware of how human attraction works. I do not expect whoever I'm with to not be attracted to other people — of course," Seposyan told Business Insider. "But I think making it so public so that, not only your partner but literally whoever wants to can clearly see who you're following? I think it's a clear sign of disrespect to your partner to publicize it in that way."<h2>Unfollow OnlyFans models</h2>Despite her experiences, Seposyan, who is now in a relationship, said that she wouldn't necessarily make checking a potential partner's Instagram followers an immediate priority while dating."I've never actively thought of doing that unless I saw some kind of red flag on the date," she said. "So if I was on a date with someone and they said something that kind of set off a red flag, whether it was something weirdly misogynistic or making light of porn addiction — that might be a clue for me."Similarly, Anderson, the men's dating coach, said that most women she knows don't "proactively examine" who guys are following on Instagram."That strikes me as a little neurotic," she said.But men should be more mindful about how they present themselves on <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/dating-app-tips-tinder-match-2020-8">social media</a> just as they would in person, especially if they're trying to secure dates, the experts said."I'd absolutely recommend single guys unfollow the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.insider.com/onlyfans-sex-workers-escorts-porn-2021-9">OnlyFans</a> models or other thirsty content they're following on Instagram," Anderson said.She clarified that spending money and time, for example, on <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/onlyfans-see-increased-in-revenue-profit-creators-2023-8">OnlyFans subscriptions</a> can be counterproductive for dating: "Put your phone down, get outside, and talk to a woman who's actually interested in you."But the onus isn't entirely on men. Women, too, may want to consider their expectations when talking to single men, Anderson said."If you're a woman and you refuse to date guys who follow anyone with an OnlyFans on Instagram, there probably won't be a lot of guys out there for you to date," Anderson said.
