<ul class="summary-list"><li>Olivia Gaudree started working at Fuel Venture Capital as an intern in her early 20s.</li><li>She worked her way up the ranks and became a partner in under seven years at 28.</li></ul>This as-told-to essay is based on a transcribed conversation with Olivia Gaudree, a 28-year-old partner and VP of Operations at Fuel Venture Capital. Business Insider has verified her employment. The following has been edited for length and clarity.I grew up in an entrepreneurial family. My parents work at a family catering restaurant they've run for 30 years. They started a few businesses when I was a child and openly discussed the ups and downs of their businesses' operations.I knew I wanted to do something in business. I thought internships would help me figure out what.I got an internship at a local hedge fund in highschool. I worked there for two summers and one school year.I attended Florida State University and majored in finance. In 2017, my junior year of college, I had a summer financial internship at Thomson Reuters in New York.Those were formative summers for me. Through my exposure as an intern, I learned I liked working with a smaller team, where I had a lot of responsibilities and more creativity, versus a bigger investment house where everyone stays in their lane.I noticed there are ways to move up the corporate ladder at a bigger firm, but maybe not as quickly as at a younger, smaller firm.<h2 id="26c27631-144f-4aad-b290-8f95876eeb4d">Networking helped me land my job in venture capital</h2>At my high school hedge fund internship, I met Maggie Vo, now the managing general partner at Fuel Venture Capital, and got to know her well.I made a point of maintaining the relationship at college. I updated her on my progress and asked about hers.Maggie saw that I was willing to learn quickly and had the work ethic to contribute to the firm. She offered me an internship right after I graduated from college.Connecting with people in venture capital and maintaining those connections is imperative for young people. When you don't have quantitative metrics to prove your worth, industry connections can help. Reaching out meaningfully, even once a quarter, makes relationships warmer.<h2 id="d80906a1-7251-4830-9016-5b91f5bbfaab">Why I chose VC over investment banking and financial services</h2>At the time, I was considering opportunities in investment banking and financial service firms and was fielding full time offers.I chose Fuel because I would work with the investment side and directly with the founders. You don't often get exposure to both sides in a larger firm.When I joined Fuel in 2018, it was a small team of managers with one fund. I could work directly with senior leadership and access all the different parts of the business.It was also a rare opportunity to get into VC early.The typical path into VC starts with working a few years in investment banking, then a few years in a small private equity firm, and then you get a chance at VC. It can take 10 years. The alternative is to get an internship early, prove yourself, and work your way up.These days, there are more early opportunities. Some firms offer entry-level positions within the investment team, but they aren't common. Firms usually want to see that background before coming into VC.<h2 id="3b8bc890-7a6a-4da0-b3cb-bab35ee2a118">I worked my way up from intern to partner in under 7 years</h2>Fuel offered me a full time role three months after I started as an intern at 22. I then worked my way up through several more analyst roles.In the early days, I worked alongside Maggie on the investments team. I tried to absorb as much information as possible from meetings.I was working on decks, putting together due diligence packages on potential portfolio companies, and working on internal processes.I had to work harder since I didn't come to VC from the traditional investment banking path. For the first two years, I immersed myself in the industry, reading as much as possible and listening to industry podcasts.Now, I've done everything from refilling the printer to facilitating successful exits.You need to make yourself indispensable and understand every aspect of the business to thrive. Learning how to communicate effectively with everyone — founders, investors, and colleagues — was especially crucial.One easy, surefire way to move up the ranks is to know what your boss wants and, if possible, meet them there.When I first started as an intern, I also worked directly with Jeff Randsell, Fuel's founding partner. I noticed that he'd spent 25 years working his way up at Merrill Lynch. Because he'd been exposed to that cutthroat environment, I always made sure to be the last person to leave the office. He didn't say this was an expectation, but I hoped he'd recognize my hard work. I think it ultimately contributed to my getting a full time position at Fuel.<h2 id="6b480740-0c25-42a2-9afd-640b460a9dca">I shifted roles and got promoted to partner</h2>An opportunity to move on to operations arose in 2022. I never saw myself in operations because I thought it was a paperwork, back-office role. But it felt like a natural progression in my career, and I still got to work with founders and investors — now I'd understand even more about the business.Coming into the operations side, I had a good macro view of the firm I'd built up in my first four years.In this role, I work with third-party partners, run the audit process, and work directly with the tax and legal teams. I'm also involved in the investment side but with compliance. I even learned how to form a fund from the bottom up.I was promoted to partner,which was very important.<h2 id="d7507795-b2ba-4968-8b0f-430ba4120462">I've put in 110% effort to make it as a woman in VC</h2>With most jobs in finance including VC, there are fewer women at the table. You have to prove yourself and overcome implicit bias when you're a woman or a minority.I account for this by putting in 110% effort and a lot more planning and preparation to ensure I'm viewed as equal to everyone around me.Switching gears and interacting with a stressed founder and then a member of the tax team has been valuable to my career progress. The women I work with are very good at balancing many different things simultaneously. They are also observant and ask hard questions.These skills were especially useful in 2021 when founders went from capital exuberance to more scarcity. Everyone found this challenging.<h2 id="9be33f2f-2918-4b52-9330-3a9e63106dc0">VC means long hours, but it's fulfilling</h2>It's an 80 to 100-hour workweek industry. You have to enjoy the work. If not, it will be miserable.VC has turned out to be a great fit for me, and it's a career path I'm fully committed to.My entire journey has been so fulfilling with Fuel. I've seen founders' growth trajectories and how that's positively impacted all the people they employ and the generational wealth they're creating for their own families.While numbers heavily drive VC, it's also about gut instinct, relationships, and networking. You have to have intuition and move on it. It's not about waiting for direction. While you learn along the way, curiosity, and emotional intelligence are essential at the entry level.

Fundraising dried up. Firms downsized. Valuations have stagnated or, God forbid, gone down. That's left workers wondering: What the hell happened?Just a few years ago, VCs were the toast of the town. A Patagonia vest and a pair of Allbirds might as well have been Superman's cape when it came to investing. The ink was barely dry on a deal before startups were raising another round, doubling their VCs' investment (on paper) along the way.Even Wall Street got jealous of the eye-popping returns — again, on paper — that VCs were getting on. The hedge fund Tiger Global tried <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/tiger-global-changed-venture-capital-startups-funding">bullying its way into the space</a>.And then it all <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/startup-mass-extinction-event-has-begun-venture-capital-2023-6">came crashing down</a>.VCs are on pace to raise $200 billion this year, which is about half of what they did in 2021. AI is the only bright spot in the startup community, making it incredibly crowded.Meanwhile, exit opportunities — a chance for VCs to cash out — are few and far between. Eye-popping IPOs are a thing of the past, and acquisitions are a lot harder with high interest or at a much lower valuation than they once were.<div type="image" title="Money" height="742" width="1114" msid="112408072" hostid="261" sizebytes="123654"></div>To be sure, some VC complaints feel a bit overblown.One Bay Area partner told Sri junior investors need to meet dozens of companies a week. Another lamented about constantly cold emailing founders.While I imagine that's not necessarily fun, it does seem like a standard requirement for someone trying to find young companies to invest in. Soon-to-be unicorns aren't going to fall into your lap, even if it might have seemed that way before.But the rub for many junior employees, sources told Sri, is that the work isn't leading to a pay off in the form of an investment. There are too many VCs vying for too few startups worth backing.That's led to what feels like a lot of busy work and a lack of upward mobility, as funds aren't keen to promote when new deals aren't coming in.Even if the industry faces an exodus of disillusioned junior employees, they'll likely still be a fresh crop eager to step up into the open spots that still remain.Back when VC was booming in 2021, investment banks' juniors were complaining about long hours. A few years later, Goldman Sachs, one of the banks at the center of drama, saw a <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/inside-goldman-sachs-summer-internship-and-david-solomons-advice-2024-6">record number of applicants for its internship</a>.<h2 id="3ddf76ce-f751-4cd2-a8fa-87d6a0c6e3a0">3 things in markets</h2><div type="image" title="kamala trump" height="832" width="1118" msid="112408067" hostid="261" sizebytes="52094"></div><ol><li>Forget the polls. The stock market can predict the election. Since 1928, the S&amp;P 500 has had an 83% accuracy rate in predicting election outcomes. Venture firms could be the latest target for AI disruption, and that's not the only threat to VCs

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Ex-Goldman Sachs partner Adam Dell shared a sexually explicit video by mistake, Bloomberg reported.</li><li>Dell paid a multimillion-dollar settlement to the coworker who saw the video, Bloomberg reported.</li></ul>The former Goldman Sachs partner Adam Dell, who is Dell Technologies mogul Michael Dell's brother, sent a sexually explicit video in 2020 to a junior female colleague, <a href="https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2023-06-15/a-goldman-partner-s-sexually-explicit-video-led-to-millions-in-settlement" target="_blank" rel="noopener">according to a Bloomberg report</a>, which cited more than a half-dozen people it said were familiar with the matter.The video clip, which the report said Dell sent inadvertently, had been left by mistake in the file of a "work project" Adam Dell sent to the junior Goldman Sachs staffer, <a href="https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2023-06-15/a-goldman-partner-s-sexually-explicit-video-led-to-millions-in-settlement" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Bloomberg reported Thursday</a>. "Nexus, as a long-term Snapdeal shareholder, fully supports the Snapdeal 2.0 journey," said the firm. Nexus holds nearly 10-11% stake in Snapdeal. SoftBank, which was pushing Snapdeal to merge with Flipkart, too, backed Snapdeal's decision to go solo. Early investors support Snapdeal’s decision, back it to go independent

Its latest round which was led by Viking Global Investors, also saw participation from funds like Neuberger Berman and Atreides Management. Existing investors Riverwood Capital, Tenaya Capital, and Nexus Venture Partners participated in the fund raising too, according to <a href="https://www.thehindubusinessline.com/info-tech/cloud-start-up-druva-in-unicorn-club-as-130-mn-funding-takes-its-valuation-past-1-bn/article28086670.ece">reports.</a> After this round, the total funding raised by the startup has gone beyond $328 million. India's latest unicorn is a data protection startup Druva – backed by Viking Global and Nexus Venture Partners

As per various reports, the term sheet with <keyword id="6354742" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Flipkart">Flipkart</keyword> could be signed soon and the due diligence for the deal would commence immediately thereafter. Sources told PTI, <keyword id="541988" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="SnapDeal">Snapdeal</keyword> founders would get about $25 million each, while NVP could get close to $100 million and stake in the merged/new entity. Indian e-commerce companies have seen funding dry up over the last few months as investors are focusing extensively on profitability and rationalisation of expenses. With intense competition from deep-pocketed global rivals like <keyword id="18635" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Amazon">Amazon</keyword>, companies like Flipkart and Snapdeal could face more heat in the coming days. There have been reports that Snapdeal's mobile wallet service Freecharge could be sold separately with players like Paytm and MobiKwik being in the fray.

Flipkart all set to buy Snapdeal

 E-commerce major <keyword id="541988" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="SnapDeal">Snapdeal</keyword> will shell out an average pay hike of 12-15 percent as it looks to assure employees amid the online marketplace scouting for a potential buyer. 
 
According to sources, the pay revision will be effective from April 1 and will see salaries of employees at the mid and junior-level go up by an average 12-15 percent. 
 
For senior management, the hike will be 9-12 percent, but the company may offer 20-25 percent raise to exceptional performers, they added. 
 
The cash-strapped company is also believed to be distributing nearly 1 percent of its stock to about 150 employees. 
 
Earlier this year, the company's founders had admitted having made mistakes and said they would take a "100 percent cut" in their own salaries. 
 The decision to give such a good pay hike has been taken at a time when Snapdeal's largest investor <keyword id="163404" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Softbank">SoftBank</keyword> is believed to be working towards a sale of the e-commerce platform and a final decision is likely to be made in the next few weeks. 
 The top contender in the race is <keyword id="6354742" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Flipkart">Flipkart</keyword>, which has recently received a funding of USD 1.4 billion. 
 Softbank is also in talks with <keyword id="4386851" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="kalaari-capital-and-nexus-venture-partners">Kalaari Capital and Nexus Venture Partners</keyword>, who have representation on the board of Snapdeal, to reach a consensus on valuation, sources said. 
 Snapdeal's seven-member board includes representation from investors SoftBank, Kalaari Capital and Nexus Venture Partners, as well as co-founders <keyword id="219793" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Kunal-Bahl">Kunal Bahl</keyword> and <keyword id="396598" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Rohit-Bansal">Rohit Bansal</keyword>.

<a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=kalaari+capital&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">Kalaari Capital</a> and <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=nexus+venture+partners&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">Nexus Venture Partners</a> are at loggerheads with Japanese investor <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=softbank&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">SoftBank</a>, which has now cancelled a $150-200 million debt financing offer to <keyword id="541988" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="SnapDeal">Snapdeal</keyword>. 
 As per various reports, <keyword id="163404" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Softbank">SoftBank</keyword> is now interested in either merger or sell out of Snapdeal without any involvement of the other investors. ET reported SoftBank has been talking to several people for the deal without keeping <keyword id="1397792" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Kalaari-Capital">Kalaari Capital</keyword> and <keyword id="175881" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Nexus-Venture-Partners">Nexus Venture Partners</keyword> in loop. 
 
"Both Kalaari Capital and Nexus Venture Partners are livid at the developments, and have questioned SoftBank about its intention with regard to Snapdeal,” ET quoted one of its sources as saying. 
 
"There was a term-sheet offering Snapdeal debt financing for a period of three years, which was, inexplicably, withdrawn within days, giving credence that Soft-Bank has made up its mind about selling the company,” a second person told ET. 
 SoftBank has seats at the table, while Kalaari and Nexus have one each on Jasper’s board that includes cofounders <keyword id="219793" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Kunal-Bahl">Kunal Bahl</keyword> and <keyword id="396598" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Rohit-Bansal">Rohit Bansal</keyword>, and Bharti Enterprises vice-chairman Akhil Gupta as an independent director. 
 
Apparently, the differences within the board are not new. In December, SoftBank had offered a direct $50-million monthly injection in Snapdeal, contingent on a potential merger or sale of the company. Kalaari and Nexus Venture Partners disagreed with the terms. 
 
SoftBank's stake in Jasper stood at about 33% while Kalaari Capital and Nexus Venture Partners owned about 8% and 10%, respectively. Both the founders, combined, owned about 6.5% of the company, which at its peak early last year was valued at about $6.5 billion. 
 
As per Reuters, SoftBank has reached out to <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=flipkart&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">Flipkart </a>to sell Snapdeal.

Snapdeal’s investors cross swords; SoftBank cancels $150-200 million debt financing

New Delhi, Dec 10 () Observe.AI, an artificial intelligence (AI)-powered agent enablement for voice customer service, on Tuesday said it has raised USD 26 million (about Rs 184 crore) in a funding round-led by Scale Venture Partners.
 The series A financing round also saw participation from Nexus Venture Partners, Steadview Capital, 01 Advisors, and Emergent Ventures, a statement said.
 This brings the company's total funding to USD 34 million, it added.
 The latest funding will allow Observe.AI to expand its US-India team globally and accelerate product development.
 In conjunction with the funding, Andy Vitus, partner at Scale, will be joining Observe.AI's board.
 "Legacy speech analytics systems are simply not meeting the needs of the world's top brands. Today's customer service agents have a unique ability to emotionally connect with customers and are often a brand's only frontline representatives," Observe.AI CEO and co-founder Swapnil Jain said.
 The investment will fuel the company's mission to elevate agent performance through AI-based coaching and insights, he added.
 Some of Observe.AI's users include TripAdvisor, Concentrix, ClearMe, and Root Insurance.

 Around the world, there are several examples of entrepreneurs with hobbies about as crazy as their ideas. Elon Musk, founder of SpaceX and <keyword id="156689" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Tesla-Motors">Tesla Motors</keyword>, collects James Bond memorabilia. <keyword id="6354630" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Mark-Zuckerberg">Mark Zuckerberg</keyword> of Facebook prefers eating what he kills. <keyword id="6629386" type="PERSON" weightage="80" keywordseo="Henry-Ford">Henry Ford</keyword> who built an automotive empire liked to restore historical buildings. For India's startup entrepreneurs and investors, too, tried and tested hobbies won't do. <keyword id="2933507" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Guhesh-Ramanathan">Guhesh Ramanathan</keyword>, who runs startup incubator Excubator, got hooked to scuba diving 17 years ago and is now an avid underwater photographer. "I think I've become pretty damn good at it," said Ramanathan, a former <keyword id="28115" type="CITY" weightage="40" keywordseo="Intel">Intel</keyword> executive. Having founded and helped consult at many companies, Ramanathan was itching for a change in 1998. He discovered this hobby at 35 and decided to seriously invest in it. Plus, he wanted bragging rights to being the only one in his friends' circle to be a certified scuba diver. The effect was so overpowering that he combined his underwater lessons with his work experience and penned them into a book: "Scuba Sutras". 

	"The lessons for business leaders come from many different places. What if I could get business insights from my experiences with scuba diving?" said Ramanathan.
 Srikanth Nadhamuni, ceo of start-up incubator <keyword id="1959022" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Khosla-Labs">Khosla Labs</keyword> loves designing and creating nice and elegant things. His intricately designed garage is a proof of it. The four pillars adorning the wall were picked off a junkyard in Mysore, and he spent weekends removing paint, grime and fungi on the wood and carving it deeper to make the intricate patterns stand out. The garage is now an entertainment center for his family of four. 

	"Designing is about fixing things. Much like coding," said said Nadhamuni, who laboured eight months on the restoration. The pillars are topped off with protruding wooden arches that he designed on Adobe Illustrator. Between the pillars is a wooden door with intricate patterns, also designed using the same software. 
 <keyword id="2933506" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="80" keywordseo="Sanjay-Parthasarathy">Sanjay Parthasarathy</keyword>, cofounder of big data firm Indix, gets his lessons from his habit of collecting contemporary art the past 25 years. His collection spans 700 photographs, sculptures and paintings, the latter two focused on contemporary Indian and modern genres. He showcased some of his collection at Seattle's Art Museum in December. "My challenge is how come I'm not spending all my time on it," said the former Microsoft veteran, who raised $15 million (.95 crore) from Nokia Growth Partners, Nexus Venture Partners and <keyword id="1626954" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Avalon-Ventures">Avalon Ventures</keyword> in June.
