<ul class="summary-list"><li>Salaha Ashraf spent her last few years of medical school feeling stressed and anxious.</li><li>She said hospital wards were under-resourced and busy, and she knew she wanted to quit. </li></ul><p><em>This as-told-to essay is based on a transcribed conversation with Salaha Ashraf, 28, from Bolton, a town in the northwest of England. Ashraf went to medical school in 2014 but pivoted into a corporate career after deciding she didn't want to be a doctor. The following has been edited for length and clarity.</em></p><p>There wasn't a defining moment when I decided to <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/what-parents-did-right-to-help-get-into-med-school-2021-1">go into medicine</a>. I sort of fell into it. In my South Asian culture, medical professions are highly regarded. Plus, my siblings worked in the medical field, and I could see them doing well.</p><p>During my time working in hospitals for my medical degree, I experienced a lot of anxiety and stress. I was working long shifts and felt like I was being thrown into the deep end.</p><p>I decided to <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/nurses-are-considering-leaving-the-profession-after-covid-19-pandemic-2021-5">leave the medical field</a> in 2020 after finishing my degree. I got on a corporate graduate scheme at 25 and now have a 9-to-5 in HR. I've never looked back.</p><h2><strong>I struggled with the UK's understaffed hospital environment during my studies</strong></h2><p>I started my five-year medical degree in 2014 at a university in northwest England.</p><p>The first two years of my course were focused on learning theory about anatomy and physiology and the last few years were spent in hospitals, learning the skills and techniques I'd need to be a doctor.</p><p>I enjoyed the first few years, but I began to struggle in my third year when it became more hospital-based. In a lecture theatre, I was shielded from the realities of being a doctor.</p><p><a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/covid-uk-hospitals-nhs-collapsei-doctors-nurses-2021-1">The NHS</a> has been under increasing pressure. When I worked in hospitals, the wards were understaffed, under-resourced, and extremely busy because of a <a target="_blank" href="https://www.bma.org.uk/advice-and-support/nhs-delivery-and-workforce/funding/health-funding-data-analysis">lack of government funding</a>. It was a tough environment to learn and practice skills. Doctors were being pulled in all directions. Finding one with the time to watch me practice and teach me was hard.</p><p>I also had reservations about junior doctors' salaries. <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/junior-doctors-strike-reasons-and-interview-2016-1">Junior doctors</a> in the UK have been striking for years over low pay. My peers had such a passion for medicine that they were willing to be doctors no matter what. I didn't feel I had enough passion to compensate for the lack of fair pay.</p><h2><strong>I found a new passion for business management but decided to finish my medical degree before switching career path</strong></h2><p>I dreaded going into my fifth year of medicine and decided to take a year out and do a master's in business management. I wanted to explore areas outside the medical field.</p><p>I felt more passionate about business management after one year compared to four years of medical school. I attended lectures because I wanted to, not because I had to.</p><p>I knew I wanted to <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/productivity-youtubers-creator-business-channel-hacks-tips-ali-abdaal-2021-11">quit medicine</a>, but I was so close to the finishing line after passing my fourth-year finals before taking a year out. Logically, it made sense to finish my medical degree. I was meant to graduate in the summer of 2020, but it was brought forward to April because the pandemic hit.</p><h2><strong>In the UK, we have graduate schemes that help you get your foot in the door at an industry</strong></h2><p>During my fifth year, I started applying to graduate schemes. I'd heard about <a target="_blank" href="https://www.top100graduateemployers.com/">The Times newspaper's</a> book of top 100 graduate employers. I looked through it and applied to a range of companies. My choices were mainly based on location, as I wanted to stay in the north of England, close to my parents.</p><p>The application process was harder than I expected. I didn't realize there were various stages, like personality and situational judgment tests. I messed up the first video interview I did. But my technique improved after a few other interviews.</p><p>I made it to a final interview with an aerospace company and got offered a remote job as a graduate commercial officer, managing contracts for the company. I started in January 2021.</p><p>There was a cohort of around 30 of us on the grad scheme.</p><p>I was 25 at the time, and many of the other grads were younger than me. I felt behind and like I should be further in my career at this stage, but I had to remind myself I had the maturity and professionalism that the 21-year-olds didn't have.</p><p>I learned a lot about communication while training to speak with patients as a doctor.</p><h2><strong>The perks of a 9-to-5 job are great</strong></h2><p>The scheme officially ended after 18 months, and I was given a permanent role in contracts. The company let me pivot into HR six months later because I wanted to do something that would incorporate my people skills.</p><p>I felt my medical background made me suitable for <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/amazon-hr-performance-improvement-plans-pip-pivot-had-to-quit-2023-11">HR work</a>. Doctors improve patient's lives, and in HR, I'm improving employee's lives. I left that company in September 2023 and now work in HR at a pharmaceutical company.</p><p>In a corporate role, I get my weekends off and have more control over my annual leave. I take an hour lunch break, whereas when I worked in a hospital, I would skip meals to keep up with the workload. I also <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/dream-job-in-office-work-full-time-flexibility-benefits-2024-3">work from home</a> at my current job, which allows me to spend time with my family.</p><p>I feel I'm in the right career for me.</p><h2><strong>I don't wish I was a doctor</strong></h2><p>I try to look back at <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/personal-finance/medical-school-cost">medical school</a> in a positive light. I'm glad I did it because it taught me useful skills, like how to communicate clearly.</p><p>If I truly asked myself at 18, "What do I actually want to do?" I probably wouldn't have enrolled in medicine. If I felt empowered to follow my passion, maybe I would have studied psychology, which I found interesting at school. I'm glad I'm thinking about what I want now — better late than never.</p><p>I don't for one-second wish I was a doctor. I greatly respect people who are, but I strongly believe it's the passion that drives them — and that's something I ultimately never had.<br /><br /><em>In response to a request for comment from Business Insider, an NHS spokesperson said: </em><br /><br />"<em>There are more doctors working in the NHS than ever before, with more than twice as many people joining the medical register as leavers, but we know there is more work to do to retain our hardworking staff. As part of delivering our NHS Long Term Workforce Plan we've taken action to improve working conditions and improve retention, including increasing choice and flexibility in rotas and reducing duplicative inductions and training so clinicians can spend less time on admin and more time treating patients. At the same we are continuing to expand education, training and recruitment, including a 25% increase in medical places and an expansion of specialty training places, to ensure we have the staff we need to meet the changing needs of the population."</em></p>

I quit medicine for a corporate grad job. I felt behind but didn't have the passion to become a low-paid doctor. 

<br /><ul><li><strong>Doctors striking in <keyword id="6357783" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="West-bengal">West Bengal</keyword> have decided to hold discussions with CM <keyword id="43891" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Mamta-Banerjee">Mamta Banerjee</keyword> over the safety issues. <br /></strong></li></ul><ul><li><strong>However, the doctors have asked the presence of representatives of all medical colleges and national media to keep transparency. <br /></strong></li></ul><ul><li><strong>Meanwhile, India’s leading medical association have widened the nationwide strike on 17 June. <br /></strong></li></ul>The doctors on strike in the state of West Bengal for improved security have decided to talk with West Bengal CM Mamta Banerjee “to immediately end the impasse.” However, they have demanded the discussion to take place in the presence of media and include representatives of all medical colleges in the state.<br /><br />"The last press interview by our honourable Chief Minister was full of discrepancies which had led to false propagation of the motive behind our protests and the response of the government to it. Hence it needs clarification," said a representative from doctors strike. <br /><br />On 15 June , India’s leading doctors’ association, the Indian Medical Association (IMA), widened the nation-wide protest beyond West Bengal, where the strike started, across the country on 17 June, demanding better security to prevent any violent attack,<a href="https://www.scmp.com/news/asia/south-asia/article/3014636/doctors-india-threaten-strike-demand-safety-after-attack"> reported </a>Reuters. <br /><br />The strike is going to cripple hundreds of government-run hospitals across India. The protest started in West Bengal after relatives of a dead patient attacked three junior doctors at the NRS Medical College in Kolkata leaving them seriously injured. <br /><br />The IMA, that now demands a legislation to protect the doctors, said the attack was “barbaric.” Over 30,000 doctors in the country joined the one-day long strike on 15 June, claimed medical associations. Previously, the IMA stretched the day long strike on Friday to over the weekend and decided to all non-essential services in all health care institutions on 17 June.<br /><br />Union Health Minister Harsh Vardhan has urged all the Chief Ministers to take strict action against the assault. “The government must pass a law to make any attack on doctors a non-bailable offence with minimum 12 years of jail,” tweeted Vardhan. <br /><br />With the nation-wide protest going on since Friday now, most of the patients will likely have to wait outside hospitals for long hours, <a href="https://www.scmp.com/news/asia/south-asia/article/3014636/doctors-india-threaten-strike-demand-safety-after-attack">according to </a>Reuters. India’s government spending on health care is already among the lowest in the world. <br /><br />The protests are against the brutal attack on two junior doctors in Kolkata by the family members of a dead patient in the NRS Medical College and Hospital that took place late on June 10, doctors across the West Bengal and later across India had stopped working.<br />

<br />Several hospitals and doctors association including the (All India Institute of Medical Sciences) AIIMS in New Delhi, Raipur, Patna and Punjab have shut down services, owing to the protest. <br /><br />Government hospitals in Kerala and Hyderabad also staged a protest through ‘cease work’ demonstration. Over 4,500 Maharashtra Association of Resident Doctors (MARD) also joined the mass protest by not attending the patients in nearly 26 government hospitals. <br /><br />Similar protests were also being held in Pune, Aurangabad and Nagpur by MARD members who are demanding protection for their counterparts in West Bengal.<br /><br />Senior and junior resident doctors of several government hospitals in the nation’s capital on June 14 also went on the one-day token strike.<br /><br />

There are 55,000 and 37,000 are British Medical Association (BMA) members - which is the body that called the strike.</p><p>The majority of the public seem to support them, <a href="http://uk.businessinsider.com/junior-doctors-strike-polls-show-public-back-industrial-action-2016-1">according to new a</a><span><a href="http://uk.businessinsider.com/junior-doctors-strike-polls-show-public-back-industrial-action-2016-1"> Newsnight/Ipsos MORI</a>, which showed 66% of the public support the strike as long as emergency care is still provided.</span></p><p><span>Meanwhile, <span>Health Secretary Jeremy Hunt described the junior doctors' strike as "completely unnecessary" and said </span></span>"we have some disagreements with the <span>British Medical Association </span>over pay. But we all want to promise every patient who uses the NHS the promise of the same high-quality care every day of the week."</p><p>"And at the moment we have an NHS where if you have a stroke at the weekends, you're 20% more likely to die. That can't be acceptable," <a href="http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/health-35294637">he told the BBC.</a></p><p>So, Business Insider spoke to a junior doctor from Hull who is active on the picket line to get to the bottom of what is happening on the front line and what were the exact reasons for her and her colleagues taking strike action.</p><p><strong>Business Insider: Tell us in a nutshell why you and the rest of the junior doctors are striking.</strong></p><p><strong>Ellen McCourt:</strong> Junior doctors are striking for two main reasons. Firstly the government is removing safeguards that would risk patients safety in our contracts - <span>safe working hours and conditions for junior doctors.</span></p><p>The second is changing the way we are paid. Previously we'd be paid extra for antisocial hours, such as evenings and weekends, but the government does not want to deem them as antisocial any more. They are considered normal working times. Considering emergency medicine primarily deals in antisocial hours, this means emergency healthcare workers will ultimately get a pay cut.</p><p><span>[The government says a night shift is any shift which includes three hours between 11pm and 6am while the BMA says it's any shift that includes hours after 10pm. There are also various disagreements over issues such as rest periods and shift patterns.]</span></p><div>These are the two main reasons - it's not safe, not fair, and not sustainble. </div><p><strong><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Reuters</span></p><p class="caption">Doctors hold placards during a strike outside St Thomas' hospital in central London, Britain January 12, 2016.</p></div><p></p></div></div>BI: What are the biggest misconceptions over why you are all striking?</strong></p><p><strong>EM:</strong> The biggest misconception is that we all just want a pay rise. We have never said that we are looking for or wanting a payrise. We need assurances from the government that it will negotiate on the concerns we have over our contracts (patients and doctors' safety). </p><p>The government wants to change working hours that are just completely inappropriate for junior doctors. They want a seven-day NHS but we are already operating a seven-day NHS. As a trainee, I work one in two weekends - I don't know how many more I can work. </p><p>We already have problems recruiting and retaining doctors in the <keyword id="6354868" type="COUNTRY" weightage="60" keywordseo="UK">UK</keyword>, so the issue is two fold - safety assurances and not implementing pay cuts. </p><p><strong>BI: Junior doctors earn around £22,636, <a href="https://www.healthcareers.nhs.uk/about/careers-medicine/pay-doctors">according to the NHS website</a>, but how many hours do you and other junior doctors work and what is the change over your contracts?</strong></p><p><strong>EM:</strong> We legally can work 91-hour weeks, which average out to around 48-hour weeks over six months. The government isn't contractualising more hours for us but they are not giving us assurances about safeguards around working long and antisocial hours. </p><p>They are removing <span>the current financial penalty scheme which will disincentivise NHS Trusts from making us work unsafe hours. [Currently, hospitals are monitored and fined is doctors regularly work longer hours than legally allowed. The government wants to scrap this].</span></p><p>We see that [the scrapping of the financial penalties] as a disincentive as it won't stop people from breaking the rules if there is nothing to penalise them for.</p><p><strong><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Ellen McCourt</span></p><p class="caption">Dr. Ellen McCourt working on New Year's Day in A&amp;E.</p></div><p></p></div></div>BI: What is your response to those who are unsupportive of industrial action and that you are all being seen to be jeopardising patients' safety with strikes?</strong></p><p><strong>EM:</strong> Any patient looking for emergency care will receive the exact same level of care as they would on Christmas Day and New Year's Eve.</p><p>Accident and Emergency is fully staffed so any sick adult or child would still be seen by emergency staff. (<a href="https://twitter.com/TheBMA/status/686901599579561984?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">The BMA actually asked doctors working in A&amp;E to go to work, meaning around 38% of junior doctors broke the picket line</a>). </p><p>While we regret to put some patients on hold for difficult procedures, like hip operations, we have to look at the bigger picture and the sustainability of our contracts within the NHS. </p><p><strong>BI: The government, namely Jeremy Hunt, seems pretty immovable on contract negotiations. What are the time frames for further strike action if a deal can't be made?</strong></p><p><strong>EM: </strong>In the short term, we have left a two-week window for the government to take time to consider and respond to our concerns.</p><p>However, we are in for the long haul. A junior doctor told us what the biggest misconception is about the strikes

It has been <a href="http://www.itv.com/news/tyne-tees/story/2016-01-12/junior-doctors-strike-for-first-time-in-forty-years/">40 years</a> since junior doctors last went on strike.</p><p>A Newsnight/Ipsos MORI poll released on Monday shows that 66% of the public support the strike as long as emergency care is still provided.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image"><p class="source"><span><a href="https://www.ipsos-mori.com/Assets/Docs/Polls/ipsos-mori-junior-doctors-2016-charts.pdf">Screenshot/Ipsos MORI</a></span></p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>This is very strong support for a public sector strike. But when Ipsos MORI asked the same people why they thought junior doctors were planning to strike. Only 2% of those questioned thought that it was about the safety of patients, only 1% thought it was about the safety of healthcare staff and only 3% thought it was about a disagreement over seven day services in the NHS.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image"><p class="source"><span><a href="https://www.ipsos-mori.com/Assets/Docs/Polls/ipsos-mori-junior-doctors-2016-charts.pdf">Screenshot/Ipsos MORI</a></span></p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>The public are right that long hours and pay are factors in the strike, but the number one reason given for the strike by the British Medical Association (BMA), the union that called the strike, is safety. In the summary of their positions in the negotiation with the Department for Health, the BMA put "worrying omissions which mean that the BMA still has concerns about patient and doctor safety" at the top of their list of reasons for not reaching an agreement with the government over the new junior doctor contract.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image"><p class="source"><span><a href="http://www.bma.org.uk/working-for-change/in-depth-junior-and-consultant-contract/junior-doctor-contract-negotiations-home">screenshot/Ipsos MORI</a></span></p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>While it's true that pay and hours are important factors in the negotiation between the BMA and the department for health, it seems the public is confused over what problems junior doctors actually have with the contract that has been offered to them. For instance, 46% of the public think that the strike is over "long hours" whereas the actual issue is that the BMA wants "safer working hours and conditions for junior doctors."</p><p>Specifically, the BMA and the Department for Health are in dispute over points such as what a night shift actually is. The government says it's any shift which includes three hours between 11pm and 6am while the BMA says it's any shift that includes hours after 10pm. There are also various disagreements over issues such as rest periods and shift patterns.</p><p>It's also surprising that only 3% of those questioned by Ipsos MORI thought that the strike was over "seven-day services in the NHS." The dispute between the Department for Health and the BMA does date back to 2012 when <a href="https://www.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/213214/FINAL-PDF-revised-for-DH.pdf">changes to junior doctor contracts</a> were first proposed, but many of the current sticking points such as shift pattern changes, stem from a promise made by Prime Minister David Cameron in the run-up to the 2015 general election to implement a "<a href="http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-32780216">truly seven-day NHS</a>."</p><p>The reason the public seem to support junior doctors despite being unaware of the issues, could be down to the huge popularity the NHS retains with the general public. New Delhi, <keyword id="7683594" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="The-All-India-Institute-of-Medical-Sciences">The All India Institute of Medical Sciences</keyword> (AIIMS) may curtail its <keyword id="163869" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="emergency-services">emergency services</keyword> in view of the <keyword id="6367878" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="indefinite-strike">indefinite strike</keyword> declared by the nursing staff of the medical institute, the senior officials of the hospital informed IANS.<br /><br />A high level meeting between top officials of the premier medical institute of the country, including its Director Randeep Guleria was underway at the time of this report.<br /><br />The emergency services at the premier hospital have taken a hit and critical care patients have been abandoned in view of ongoing strike. <br /><br />DK Sharma, Medical Superintendent (MS) told IANS that to control the situation, the administration has asked all the junior, resident and senior doctors to double up for the <keyword id="6382661" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="nurses">nurses</keyword> who are currently on agitation against a long list of demands, including clarity on salary structure and a freeze on hiring on contract.<br /><br />Around 5,000 nurses of AIIMS are on an indefinite strike since Monday afternoon against the hospital's decisions to enroll nursing officers on contractual payroll. <br /><br />The nurses' union's demands include correction of an anomaly in the fixation of the initial pay as per the Sixth Central Pay Commission (CPC), redressal of issues such as abolishment of gender-based reservation in the recruiting process of nursing officers and contractual appointments, enhancement of hospital accommodation and cadre restructuring.<br /><br />Meanwhile, <keyword id="4585792" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="the-ministry-of-health-and-family-welfare">the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare</keyword> (MoH&amp;FW) has directed the hospital administration to end the ongoing strike immediately, citing a Delhi High Court order passed on May 20, 2002, where a code of conduct was put in place by the court, which forbids any staff or faculty member of the AIIMS to disrupt services "for any reason whatsoever".<br /><br />In a late-evening order issued on Monday, the ministry had also threatened that non-compliance of its direction would be treated as an offence and action against the violators would be taken as per the law.<br /><br />To contain further participation in the nurses' strike, the AIIMS administration on Monday had directed its faculty members and staff not to cease work, shout slogans, hold demonstrations or meetings within the campus or around 500 meters of radius of the institute's boundary.<br /><br /><strong>SEE ALSO:<br /><a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/stock-market/news/top-stocks-to-watch-ril-airtel-vodafone-idea-tcs-tata-steel-cams-nmdc-and-others/articleshow/79732131.cms">Top stocks to watch — RIL, Airtel, Vodafone-idea, TCS, Tata Steel, CAMS, NMDC and others</a><br /><a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/tech/news/comparing-the-apple-m1-macbook-vs-the-intel-macbook/articleshow/79733783.cms">Apple vs Intel – Comparing the Apple M1 MacBook vs the Intel MacBook</a></strong><br />

AIIMS may be forced to curtail emergency services as nurses go on strike against contract employment

Speaking to the BBC's Today Programme, Chris Hopson, the chief executive at NHS Providers, the body which represents NHS Trusts, said there was no guarantee that patients wouldn't die if junior doctors go ahead and not provide emergency care in a planned strike</p><p>This is what Hopson said:</p><p style="padding-left: 30px;"><strong>BBC:</strong> If there is an all-out strike by junior doctors, nobody will die because of it?</p><p style="padding-left: 30px;"><strong>Hopson:</strong> I don't think we can give that guarantee at this point.</p><p>The <a href="http://www.bma.org.uk/working-for-change/in-depth-junior-and-consultant-contract/ddrb-recommendations-analysis-for-juniors/10-reasons-for-not-reentering-2015-junior-contract-negotiations">doctors are striking because they believe the new pay contract offered by the government</a> could extend their "routine" (basic pay) working hours from 60 hours a week to 90, meaning that they would no longer be paid extra for working nights or weekends.</p><p>Twenty-thousand operations and appointments <a href="http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-3396634/Striking-doctors-legacy-misery-20-000-hit-cancellations.html">were cancelled</a> because of Tuesday's strikes, but the Br<span>itish</span><span style="line-height: 1.5em;"> Medical Association (BMA), the body which called the strike, is planning two more. The second one, which is supposed to take place next month, would be a complete walkout - so juniors doctors wouldn't even step in to provide emergency care if it was needed. It is this strike that Hopson says the hospital chief executives he represents are worried about.</span></p><p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">Dr Mark Porter, the council chair of the BMA also spoke to the Today Programme and refused to rule out the withdrawal of emergency care, saying it would only cause "further disruption."</span></p><p>The strike really could happen because the government is determined not to cave into the j<a href="http://uk.businessinsider.com/junior-doctors-strike-reasons-and-interview-2016-1">unior doctors demands</a> over their new contract. Basically, the Department for Health feel they have enough goodwill with the public to hold out - especially because the public is so <a href="http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-35288042">concerned over the potential withdrawal of emergency care</a>.</p><p>A Conservative MP elected in 2015 told Business Insider that "no strike should threaten emergency care" and the strikes are "d<span>isappointing and dangerous. Disputes should be solved by negotiation not strikes."</span></p><p>If the junior doctors do withdraw emergency medical care they will risk <a href="http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-35288042">losing a huge amount of public support</a>. NHS chief says people might die in future doctor strikes

<p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div>Britain's doctors are threatening a strike over changes to pay and working hours that they claim are "bad for patients, bad for junior doctors, and bad for the NHS."<p>Junior doctors are threatening industrial action over planned changes to their contracts being implemented by the Department of Health next August.</p><p>An online petition backing a strike has <a href="https://www.change.org/p/british-medical-association-strike-action">passed 50,000 signatures</a> after just 5 days.</p><p>The reforms are wide-ranging but the big issue doctors have is&#xa0;the changing of the definition of "sociable hours."</p><p>At the moment, junior doctors are paid the standard rate of pay when they work between 7am and 7pm, Monday to Friday. Any time worked outside of this window earns them overtime pay.</p><p>But the new contract would&#xa0;see junior doctors paid the standard rate for working anytime between 7am and 10pm, Monday to Saturday. That essentially makes a 15-hour day "normal" and adds an extra day to the week.</p><p>As well as the success of the petition, social media is full of anger among doctors over the proposed changes. This post highlighting the fact that Department of Health boss Jeremy Hunt's office hours are 8.30am-5.30pm has been shared over 6,000 times on Facebook.</p><p><div><div id="fb-root"></div><div class="fb-post" data-href="https://www.facebook.com/luke.turner3/posts/10153733061566869:0" data-width="500"><div class="fb-xfbml-parse-ignore"><a href="https://www.facebook.com/luke.turner3/posts/10153733061566869:0">Post</a>by<a href="https://www.facebook.com/#">Luke Turner</a>.</div></div></div></p><p>And more senior doctors are also expressing solidarity with junior colleagues, posting pictures on Twitter.</p><p><div></div></p><p class="embed-spacer">&#xa0;<div></div></p><p>Dr Arrash Yassaee, a junior doctor in East London, told Business Insider: "In many other industries - in the transport industry, in the aviation industry - we have very clear rules about how long people can work because we know what fatigue can do and how dangerous it can be."&#xa0;</p><p>Dr Yassee chaired the British Medical Association's student conference last year and is a member of the National Junior Doctor's Committee, but stressed he was speaking in a personal capacity.&#xa0;(Full disclosure, I went to university with Dr Yassaee.)</p><p>He says: "We are already in a situation where quite a lot of the medical service is kept going on good will - they [doctors] arrive early, they leave later. The concern is that some of that good will is starting to be eroded away. Hospitals that have really good moral and staff feel really engaged actually have better outcomes."</p><p>Another junior doctor I spoke to, who didn't want to be named, told me:</p><p style="padding-left: 30px;">Essentially, we're all being held to ransom, because striking is just not something that we want to, or feel that, we can do, as it's not exactly in the ethics of our jobs. We all regularly stay late for up to 3-hours a day to ensure that all the work is done, and all our patients are as safe as they can be. As a result, our own personal lives suffer, and it's pretty demoralising to be working so hard, and yet getting it all thrown back at us.</p><p>Not only do the contract changes theoretically make a 15-hour work day "normal" for junior doctors, the petition claims these changes would result in "a pay cut estimated to be around 30%" because 3 hours and a whole day are cut out of the overtime pay bracket. Other estimates <a href="http://www.theguardian.com/society/2015/sep/18/junior-doctors-new-contract-cut-pay-40-per-cent">put the real-terms pay cut as high as 40%</a>.&#xa0;</p><p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_left"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div>Dr Yassaee says: "For a profession that is already struggling to fill training places in vital services, a significant salary cut that will undoubtedly disincentivise recruitment is a workforce disaster waiting to happen."<p>The changes are part of the Department of Health's efforts to create a "seven-day-a-week NHS," <a href="http://news.sky.com/story/1555387/petition-backs-junior-docs-considering-strike">Sky News reports</a>.</p><p><a href="http://dhmediacentre.tumblr.com/post/126663781022/dh-response-to-the-bmas-decision-not-to-negotiate">The Department of Health claims</a> the new contracts will:&#xa0;enhance the quality and quantity of training opportunities for junior doctors; offer a higher basic rate, with a significant increase in basic salary; pay a better rate for unsocial hours; and offer a flexible pay premium for hard-to-fill specialties.</p><p>But Dr Yassaee says: "A significant amount of spending goes towards of staff. Much of the rhetoric around improving the NHS has been around making efficiencies and it's becoming clearer that it's coming off the back of staff and wages."</p><p>Dr Yassaee worked at the Department of Health briedly and said there's "a very palpable air of how important the budget is."</p><p>The NHS' budget has had an average real-terms increase of just 0.9% per year since the Conservatives first came to power in 2010, <a href="http://www.kingsfund.org.uk/projects/nhs-in-a-nutshell/nhs-budget">according to The King's Fund</a>, the lowest average increase of any parliament.</p><p class="embed-spacer">The British Medical Association abandoned negotiations with the government over junior doctors contract last month, although has yet to endorse any strike action.</p><p class="embed-spacer">The BMA's junior doctor committee co-chair Andrew Collier <a href="http://bma.org.uk/news-views-analysis/news/2015/september/the-bma-will-fight-any-attempts-to-impose-a-contract">says in a statement on the BMA's website</a>: "We urge the Government not to impose a contract that is unsafe and unfair.
