<ul class="summary-list"><li>A team at Camoflags wanted to see if face paint designs could outsmart facial recognition cameras. </li><li>The design, which uses concepts from Juggalo makeup, was designed by an AI program. </li></ul><p>What if simple face paint could fool some of the best facial recognition tools available at the Qatar World Cup?</p><p>A team known as Camoflags sought to answer that question with AI-generated, Juggalo-inspired face paint designs that could be used to evade facial recognition cameras.</p><p>The experiment is uniquely suited to the World Cup, as face paint is a common feature at soccer matches for fans showing support for their teams.</p><div type="image" title="A person with red, white, and blue face paint" height="960" width="1280" msid="96162330" hostid="261"></div><p>The Qatar World Cup, which ends on December 18, has been criticized for its approach to security, with concerns that the event could become a <a href="https://www.recordedfuture.com/fielding-cyber-influence-and-physical-threats-to-2022-fifa-world-cup-in-qatar">hotbed for espionage</a> and that visitors could be monitored on their phones through <a href="https://www.nrk.no/sport/everyone-going-to-the-world-cup-must-have-this-app---experts-are-now-sounding-the-alarm-1.16139267">app surveillance.</a></p><p>The <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/ilhan-omar-chris-murphy-world-cup-qatar-human-rights-lgbtq-2022-12">event has</a> also <a href="https://www.businessinsider.co.za/world-cup-chief-death-part-life-filipino-worker-dies-qatar-2022-12">been criticized</a> for <a href="https://www.hrw.org/news/2022/11/14/qatar-rights-abuses-stain-fifa-world-cup">human rights abuses</a>: The <a href="https://www.insider.com/grant-wahl-dead-soccer-journalist-2022-12">death of American sports journalist Grant Wahl</a>, who died on the way to the hospital after collapsing at the World Cup stadium, resulted in renewed attention on the rights of LGBTQ individuals in Qatar. Wahl had previously been detained by authorities outside the <a href="https://www.theguardian.com/football/2022/nov/21/us-journalist-grant-wahl-says-he-was-detained-in-qatar-for-rainbow-shirt">World Cup stadium for wearing a rainbow shirt.</a></p><p>About <a href="https://www.insider.com/world-cup-monitored-cameras-facial-recognition-tech-qatar-2022-11">15,000 facial recognition cameras</a> have been set up in and around the stadium in order to identify terror threats and "hooliganism," the <a href="https://www.insider.com/world-cup-monitored-cameras-facial-recognition-tech-qatar-2022-11">World Cup's chief technology officer</a> told <a href="https://www.france24.com/en/live-news/20220812-qatar-s-ground-control-on-alert-for-world-cup-disasters">AFP</a> in August.</p><p>"What you see here is a new standard, a new trend in venue operations, this is our contribution from Qatar to the world of sport. What you see here is the future of stadium operations," Niyas Abdulrahiman told AFP.</p><p>Tao Thomsen, one of the team members at Camoflags, a <a href="https://www.insider.com/ukrainians-building-3d-models-of-cultural-sites-on-their-phones-2022-6">project from the</a><a href="https://www.instagram.com/p/CloWsfSqvrI/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link"> creative agency Virtue</a>, told Insider the team came up with the idea to test facial recognition with strange make-up combinations that distorted facial features years ago in response to the growing popularity of deepfakes of women being created <a href="https://www.vox.com/2019/10/7/20902215/deepfakes-usage-youtube-2019-deeptrace-research-report">without their consent.</a> The original intention for the project was to create make-up looks for women to wear that deepfake AI technology couldn't recognize, thereby protecting their faces from being used in sexually suggestive or non-consensual videos.</p><div type="image" title="A person with red and black face paint" height="960" width="1280" msid="96162331" hostid="261"></div><p>The idea of using face makeup to try to fool facial recognition algorithms is not new. <a href="https://cvdazzle.com/">CV Dazzle</a>, a 2010 project from artist Adam Harvey, was one of the first attempts at using geometric shapes and other gimmicks to outsmart AI. There is also some evidence that Juggalo makeup — which <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/what-are-juggalos-2017-8">consists of clown-like makeup inspired by the hip-hop group Insane Clown Posse</a> — in particular, is effective at <a href="https://www.thetimes.co.uk/article/facial-recognition-software-stumped-by-clown-make-up-hs5cns0mk">tricking facial-recognition systems.</a></p><p>The challenge with projects like these was their practical application, Thomsen said. The team realized it would be difficult to ask women to wear "crazy" makeup combinations at all times. But with soccer, it was different.</p><p>"Because if there's one place where it's okay to wear weird patterns on your face, it's a [soccer] match," Thomsen said. "People are expecting you to paint your team colors and flags and all that on your face."</p><div type="image" title="A person with white, red, blue and black face paint" height="960" width="1280" msid="96162332" hostid="261"></div><p>In order to create the ideal shape, Camoflags fed an AI art software tool, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/ai-image-generators-artists-copying-style-thousands-images-2022-10">Midjourney AI,</a> a series of descriptions that would output designs with the perfect blend of Juggalo makeup and various flags. </p><p>"We gave it these kind of descriptions and then ran that process, a lot of times until we got to a result that couldn't be recognized as a face when we pass it through like face recognition software," Thomsen said. "And then we knew we had a little bit of human love afterwards to tidy things up and make sure that [the patterns] are also aesthetically functional because generative AI does start to hallucinate at some point and make some really weird stuff."</p><p>The team tested the various Juggalo and flag patterned make-up on different consumer-grade facial recognition tech — the actual facial camera system used in Qatar is unknown to the public — and found many of the designs were able to elude cameras. </p><p>Out of the 10 systems that were tested, the team estimates that around 80% of the tests were successful.</p><div type="image" title="A person with green and yellow face paint" height="960" width="1280" msid="96162333" hostid="261"></div><p>Although Camoflags isn't aware of any adopters of their face paint designs at the World Cup yet — and recommends people don't risk getting in trouble in Qatar by testing its limits — they think it will help start a conversation about surveillance at sporting events.</p><p>Morten Grubak, another team member at Camoflags, told Insider that the team created face filters that would allow users to place virtual Juggalo designs and "color them out a little bit like a drawing book" using face paint. </p><p>Thomsen specifically pointed to the UK, where soccer fans <a href="https://www.bbc.com/news/uk-wales-south-west-wales-44007872">have already had to deal</a> with faulty facial recognition Sports venues across the world have also begun using facial recognition technology to identify people <a href="https://www.espn.com/chalk/story/_/id/24884024/why-use-facial-recognition-cameras-sporting-events-the-rise">engaging in illegal activity</a>, to <a href="https://www.cnbc.com/2018/04/21/facial-recognition-helps-teams-and-advertisers-learn-about-fans.html">collect data for advertisements</a>, and <a href="https://www.wkyc.com/article/sports/nfl/browns/cleveland-browns-facial-recognition-ticket-entry-firstenergy-stadium/95-cd03edf8-098a-4182-af47-f5e700891722">verify ticket holders for entry at events.</a></p><p>There is also evidence that <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/facial-recognition-racial-bias-federal-study-2019-12?r=US&amp;IR=T" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">facial recognition technology</a> is less likely to correctly identify women and people of color, which could <a href="https://www.insider.com/researchers-found-ai-robots-racist-and-sexist-stereotypes-sorting-photos-2022-7">lead to people</a> being misidentified for crimes by law enforcement.</p><p>"We know that there's a large fraction of [soccer] fans, particularly in the UK, who are very vocal about their distrust and their dislike of facial recognition, and we're hoping that this can become a tool for [soccer] fans there and everywhere in the world, to take a stand against facial recognition," Thomsen said.</p>

AI-designed face paint inspired by Juggalos could potentially fool the 15,000 facial recognition cameras at the Qatar World Cup

<ul class="summary-list"><li><keyword id="11985063" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="juggalos" source="Orion">Juggalos</keyword> are fans of the horrorcore-rap duo <keyword id="11985066" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="insane-clown-posse" source="Orion">Insane Clown Posse</keyword>.</li><li>The subculture is characterized by wearing face paint and dressing up as clowns.</li><li>Many Juggalos say they want to subvert class hierarchies and build a familial community.</li></ul><p class="drop-cap">This month, Juggalos came together for their 21st annual Gathering of the Juggalos in Thornville, Ohio, offering a new deluge of imagery of chaotic clown behavior. The major fans of horrorcore-rap duo Insane Clown Posse are widely known for wearing intense face paint, dressing as clowns, wearing hatchet symbols, and drinking <a href="https://melmagazine.com/en-us/story/faygo-juggalos-american-history">Faygo soda</a>.</p><p>While it's hard to track the exact number of attendees, previous Gatherings have drawn upwards of 20,000 people, <a href="https://www.indystar.com/story/news/local/2019/07/31/juggalos-gathering-indiana-heres-what-you-should-know/1864770001/">organizers told the IndyStar in 2019.</a></p><p>But decades into the existence of the Insane Clown Posse fandom, it remains largely misunderstood by mainstream society.</p><p>The community was labeled by the FBI as a non-traditional gang in its <a href="http://www.fbi.gov/stats-services/publications/2011-national-gang-threat-assessment/2011%20National%20Gang%20Threat%20Assessment%20%20Emerging%20Trends.pdf">2011</a> National Gang Threat Assessment. The report <a href="https://www.fbi.gov/stats-services/publications/2011-national-gang-threat-assessment">highlighted a handful of crimes committed by</a> fans of the Insane Clown Posse as "sporadic, disorganized, individualistic," and said these crimes "often involve simple assault, personal drug use and possession, petty theft, and vandalism."</p><div type="image" title="Violent J, with his signature black and white clown facepaint, stands in front of a large crowd of Juggalos photographed in front of the Lincoln Memorial." height="740" width="1024" msid="85782418" hostid="261"></div><p>For the last decade, the Insane Clown Posse and the Juggalos - alongside the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) of Michigan in an unsuccessful 2014 lawsuit - have <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/sf/style/2017/08/31/the-fbi-labeled-insane-clown-posse-fans-a-gang-now-theyre-marching-on-washington/">fought</a> this label.</p><p>"The Juggalos are fighting for the basic American right to freely express who they are, to gather and share their appreciation of <keyword id="11898471" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="music" source="Orion">music</keyword>, and to discuss issues that are important to them without fear of being unfairly targeted and harassed by police," Michael J. Steinberg, the legal director of the ACLU of Michigan, said in a <a href="https://www.aclu.org/press-releases/aclu-insane-clown-posse-file-lawsuit-challenging-fbi-gang-designation">2014 press release</a> announcing their federal lawsuit fighting the government's classification. The U.S. Court of Appeals <a href="https://www.aclumich.org/en/news/open-letter-juggalos-gang-case-accomplished-many-goals-0#:~:text=The%20court%20ruled%20that%20the,Juggalos'%20right%20to%20free%20expression.ion.">ruled</a> that the FBI could not be sued for infringing on freedom of expression rights.</p><p>Violent J, one-half of the Insane Clown Posse, claimed at an <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d9LRWMDumvs&amp;t=41s=41s">ACLU of Michigan press conference in 2014</a> that the FBI's report had caused Juggalos to unfairly lose jobs, be denied housing, and even <a href="https://www.spin.com/2012/08/insane-clown-posse-sue-the-fbi-our-on-the-grounds-report/">lose custody of children</a>. </p><div type="image" title="A shirtless male fan wearing glasses sits on a barricade with concertgoers sitting behind him." height="998" width="1500" msid="85782420" hostid="261"></div><p>The sub<keyword id="11899151" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="culture" source="Orion">culture</keyword> persists despite its reputational challenges. Many members of the community say the real culture of the Juggalos is one that seeks to upend class hierarchies while <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/reviews/out?u=https%3A%2F%2Fnewrepublic.com%2Farticle%2F144839%2Fjuggalos-come-peace-march-washington-dc">building a community founded upon familial bonds</a>.</p><p>JessieJayne Dough, a Juggalette (a female Juggalo) from Pennsylvania, attended the Gathering for the first time this year. </p><p>"To me at least, there's no level of love and community and just people being able to safely and happily be themselves, however weird or different it might be, than what I experience at any ICP show," Dough told Insider. </p><h2><strong>The Juggalos are fans of the Insane Clown Posse, a rap duo whose albums tell stories in a fictional universe</strong></h2><div type="image" title="Two men with clown face paint and dark wigs make goofy faces at the camera in a black-and-white photo." height="619" width="1024" msid="85782421" hostid="261"></div><p class="drop-cap">In the simplest terms, Juggalos are fans of the Insane Clown Posse, representing a predominately white, working-class subculture of people of all genders, many of whom feel <a href="https://www.npr.org/2017/09/15/550724673/who-are-the-juggalos-and-why-are-they-marching-in-washington-d-c">like outcasts from mainstream society</a>. As <a href="https://www.vox.com/policy-and-politics/2017/8/21/16163816/insane-clown-posses-juggalo-march-on-washington">Vox reported</a> in 2017, a Juggalo is just a fan in the same way a Belieber or Swiftie is devoted to Justin Bieber and Taylor Swift, respectively. </p><p>Originating in Detroit in the early 1990s, the Insane Clown Posse - Violent J (Joseph Bruce) and Shaggy 2 Dope (Joseph Utsler) - have developed a complex musical universe of symbols, themes, and aesthetics that have reverberated through the community since. </p><p>In their first album, 1992's "Carnival of Carnage," the duo introduced the narrative of a traveling carnival of spirits who enter upper-class neighborhoods to punish the rich for their crimes against the working class. </p><p>With each subsequent album, Insane Clown Posse (often called "ICP") has introduced new characters, like the Ringmaster, the Great Milenko, and The Amazing Jeckel Brothers, each of whom has their own story and function within the greater arc of the Dark Carnival, or the extended Insane Clown Posse musical universe. Each installment is referred to as a Joker's Card. </p><div type="image" title="A Juggalo with black and white face-paint, dreadlocks, and a beard posing for a portrait." height="1247" width="998" msid="85782424" hostid="261"></div><p>Fans quickly began to follow the group after their first album, with the term "Juggalos" <a href="https://www.npr.org/2017/09/15/550724673/who-are-the-juggalos-and-why-are-they-marching-in-washington-d-c">originating from an off-hand comment</a> during a concert performance of the song "The Juggla." </p><p>There are no official numbers for how many people identify as Juggalos, though the FBI's 2011 National Gang Threat Assessment reported that there were 1 million self-identifying Juggalos and Juggalettes.</p><p>There's also evidence that many youths who are homeless identify as Juggalos "because the group's music embraces poverty and being an outsider in mainstream society," according to a 2017 <a href="https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5409874/pdf/nihms826326.pdf">article published in the Child Psychiatry &amp; Human Development</a> scientific journal, which also found that "Juggalos are stereotyped as being violent, undereducated, poor, racist, crime-committing youth." </p><h2><strong>Insane Clown Posse music is horror-themed, but not without purpose </strong></h2><p><strong><div type="image" title="A group of Insane Clown Posse fans stands in a protest with signs that read 'JUGGALO 4 LIFE,' 'WTF FBI,' and 'Fuck Fascism.'" height="683" width="1024" msid="85782426" hostid="261"></div></strong></p><p class="drop-cap">Much of the music in the Dark Carnival is indeed violent and horror-themed, with songs about chopping up bodies or murdering an entire family in hopes of luring one's ghost lover back. </p><p>But in most cases, this terror serves a narrative purpose: often, the violence is explained in the lyrics by Insane Clown Posse as retribution for the working class or an <a href="https://www.vox.com/policy-and-politics/2017/8/21/16163816/insane-clown-posses-juggalo-march-on-washington">attack on racism</a>, but more simply, it's a metaphorical expression of anger originating from systematic oppression. </p><p>That said, literal violence isn't part of what it means to be a Juggalo. <a href="https://www.academia.edu/43572795/Insane_Clown_Posse_and_the_Liminal_World_of_Carnival_Class_and_Juggalo_Family?source=swp_share">Most Juggalos assert</a> that their community is more about peace and love than the hatchet symbols and scary clown costumes might suggest. </p><blockquote class="pullquote-wrapper"><q class="pullquote-quotation">I got into it all by total accident but the community, the people, the music - it saved me a little, it gave me hope.</q> <cite class="pullquote-source">JessieJayne Dough, a Juggalette</cite></blockquote><p>The most significant embodiment of this is through the annual Gathering of the Juggalos, the multi-day music festival featuring numerous performers, wrestling matches, parties, and generally carnivalesque behavior, culminating in an Insane Clown Posse performance in which typically everyone gets sprayed with Faygo, a soda brand popular in the midwest. </p><p>This year, the Gathering was held from August 19 to 22. <a href="https://www.thedailybeast.com/the-gathering-of-the-juggalos-sees-steve-o-chris-hansen-and-a-horde-of-crazy-clowns-take-over-ohio">The Daily Beast reported</a> that the festival was "slightly scaled-down" from previous years, though writer-photographer Igor Smith cited Juggalos hugging as the primary activity he witnessed throughout the festival. "Jackass" member Steve-O and Chris Hansen of "To Catch a Predator" made appearances, and Vanilla Ice, Danny Brown, and Juggalo rapper Ouija Macc were among some of the performers. </p><h2><strong>Research has suggested that the annual Gathering fosters a community bond</strong></h2><div type="image" title="Three juggalos with face paint pose in front of tents." height="998" width="1500" msid="85782430" hostid="261"></div><p class="drop-cap">The clown facepaint many Juggalos adorn during the festival, as well as practices like spraying Faygo, may actually serve to enhance the community bond. Face-painting, in particular, serves to <a href="https://www.mtv.com/news/2579459/insane-clown-posse-makeup/">highlight Juggalos as part of the community</a> separate from the rest of society and offers a unique method of bonding and creative expression. It's something Insane Clown Posse has themselves been doing for nearly every public appearance since their beginning.</p><p>This dynamic is something the late sociologist <a href="https://obituaries.bowdoin.edu/karen-b-halnon/">Karen Bettez Halnon</a> explored in reference to the Gathering and other music festivals, describing it as embodying what she coined as "grotesque realism," a "potentially limitless challenge to the structural and moral orders of everyday life," <a href="https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/abs/10.1525/si.2006.29.1.33">per a 2006 study</a>. </p><p>As Halnon <a href="https://journals.sagepub.com/doi/10.1163/1569163042119868">explained in her research</a>, acts like costuming and becoming sticky with soda function like uniting rituals among Juggalos. Anyone can be a Juggalo, but to do so requires aligning with an aesthetic that challenges social norms. Quite literally, being a Juggalo requires making a clown of oneself. For that reason, though, the theme of family is paramount - if you're down with the clown, as they say, you've got an extended family thousands of Juggalos strong. </p><p>"I got into it all by total accident but the community, the people, the music - it saved me a little, it gave me hope," JessieJayne, the Juggalette, told Insider.</p><p>"There's nothing like the way these shows and everything about the Gathering make you feel. They're upset that a 2011 report given to Congress describes Juggalos as a "loosely organized hybrid gang." The fans filed a lawsuit in Detroit, blaming the report for harassment by police.</p><p>The 6th US Circuit Court of Appeals <a href="http://www.opn.ca6.uscourts.gov/opinions.pdf/17a0284p-06.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noopener">ruled Monday</a> that the report carries no direct legal consequences. The court also says the Justice Department isn't responsible for how other police agencies use information in the annual report.</p><p>Juggalos often have jewelry and tattoos with the group's symbol, a man running with a hatchet.</p><p>The American Civil Liberties Union says the court "let the FBI off the hook." While the march is explicitly nonviolent and inclusive, organizers such as the&#xa0;Alt Knights&#xa0;have stated missions of street activism and "confrontation," and were involved in organizing the <a href="https://twitter.com/JackSmithIV/status/896178257615351813">Charlottesville "Unite the Right"</a>&#xa0;rally.</p><p>Meanwhile, Juggalos are marching for a very different issue - to protest being classified as a&#xa0;"loosely organized hybrid gang" by the FBI.&#xa0;</p><p>While the Insane Clown Posse draws thousands of fans&#xa0;to festivals, many people are in the dark on what Juggalos actually are. According Juggalos,&#xa0;they're one of the most misunderstood groups of people in the US.&#xa0;</p><p>Here's&#xa0;what you need to know about Juggalos before the potential&#xa0;clash between the hip-hop fans and far-right Trump supporters.&#xa0;</p>

<p><span><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"><img src="https://static-ssl.businessinsider.com/image/59babe3c9803c523008b5e53-814/1683.jpg" alt="Insane Clown Posse" /></div></div></div></span>Lately in Washington, there are massive marches and protests conducted every few days, particularly on the weekends.</p><p>Early in the year, there was the Women's March, the climate march, and more.</p><p>But Saturday, something a little bit different is coming to town - the Juggalo March.</p><p>Juggalos are ardent fans of the fringe hip-hop duo Insane Clown Posse and they paint their faces like clowns to be like ICP's founders, Joseph Utsler (commonly known as Shaggy 2 Dope) and Joseph Bruce (commonly known as Violent J).</p><p>The march on Washington is not just a big party, though. They group is designated as a criminal gang in several states, of which the FBI has taken notice. In 2011, the FBI's <a href="https://www.fbi.gov/file-repository/stats-services-publications-2011-national-gang-threat-assessment-2011%20national%20gang%20threat%20assessment%20%20emerging%20trends.pdf/view">National Gang Threat Assessment</a> identified the Juggalos as a "a loosely-organized hybrid gang" who often "exhibit gang-like behavior and engage in criminal activity and violence."</p><p>"Most crimes committed by Juggalos are sporadic, disorganized, individualistic, and often involve simple assault, personal drug use and possession, petty theft, and vandalism," the FBI report said. "However, open source reporting suggests that a small number of Juggalos are forming more organized subsets and engaging in more gang-like criminal activity, such as felony assaults, thefts, robberies, and drug sales. Social networking websites are a popular conveyance for Juggalo sub-culture to communicate and expand."</p><p>And the Juggalos, along with the Insane Clown Posse and their record label, Psychopathic Records, believe these descriptions from the Department of Justice are unfair.</p><p>The Juggalos and ICP will march on Washington to bring awareness to this gang designation. Per the Juggalo March's website, "the FBI's inclusion of Juggalos as a 'gang' has resulted in hundreds if not thousands of people subjected to various forms of discrimination, harassment, and profiling simply for identifying as a Juggalo."</p><p>The criminal designations have prompted lawsuits as well. Insane Clown Posse, currently represented by the American Civil Liberties Union of Michigan, have an appeal pending before the Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals. Thousands of 'criminal' clowns will march on Washington this weekend - here's why

<p>Insane Clown Posse, the face-painted rap duo, is suing the U.S. Justice Department in regards to a 2011 FBI report that classifies their famously diehard fans as a gang.</p>
<p>At a press conference with the ACLU, the group said their <a href="http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2014/01/08/juggalo-lawsuit-icp-aclu-_n_4561461.html">constitutional rights were violated when the "Juggalos"</a> were defined as a gang, and that the designation has had business and reputational ramifications.</p>
