She was 96-years-old and was in hospital for a while. Beevi, who was living at her home in Pathanamthitta after retirement, has a number of firsts to her name. Apart from being the first woman judge of the apex court she was the first Chairperson of the National Human Rights Commission and the first Muslim female Governor (<keyword id="20154" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="tamil-nadu" source="Orion">Tamil Nadu</keyword>). Incidentally Beevi enrolled herself as an advocate in 1950 and began her career in the lower judiciary in Kerala. Beevi was appointed as a Munsiff in the Kerala Sub-ordinate Judicial Services in May 1958. She was promoted as the Sub-ordinate Judge in 1968, as the Chief <keyword id="169412" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="judicial-magistrate" source="Orion">Judicial Magistrate</keyword> in 1972 and as District and Sessions Judge in 1974. Beevi was further appointed the Judicial Member of the Income Tax Appellate Tribunal in January 1980 before being elevated to the <keyword id="6355392" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="high-court" source="Orion">High Court</keyword> as a Judge on August 4, 1983. Beevi became permanent Judge of the High Court on May 14, 1984. She retired as the Judge of the High Court on April 29, 1989 but was further elevated to the Supreme Court as a Judge on October 6, 1989 where she retired on April 29, 1992. Beevi later went on to become the Governor of Tamil Nadu on January 25, 1997 and she quit in 2001 following a decision of the Union Government recommending to the President to recall her. India's first woman judge of Supreme Court Fathima Beevi passes away at 96

A special court here on Tuesday remanded former JD(S) MP <keyword id="20313055" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="Prajwal-Revanna" source="keywords">Prajwal Revanna</keyword>, who is facing charges of <keyword id="19907938" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="rape" source="keywords">rape</keyword> and <keyword id="20027232" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="sexual-abuse" source="keywords">sexual abuse</keyword>, to <keyword id="19911103" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="judicial-custody" source="keywords">judicial custody</keyword> till June 24. The 42nd Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate court had on June 12 remanded him to the custody of the <keyword id="20085377" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Special-Investigation-Team" source="keywords">Special Investigation Team</keyword> (<keyword id="19925651" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="SIT" source="keywords">SIT</keyword>), which is probing the cases against him, till June 18. The 33-year-old had failed in his bid to retain the <keyword id="22095822" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Hassan-parliamentary-constituency" source="keywords">Hassan parliamentary constituency</keyword> in the recent polls. SIT officials arrested Revanna soon after he landed at Bengaluru airport from Germany on May 31. He had left for Germany on April 27, a day after Hassan went to the polls. A '<keyword id="21526463" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Blue-Corner-Notice" source="keywords">Blue Corner Notice</keyword>' seeking information on his whereabouts had earlier been issued by the Interpol, following a request by the SIT via the Central Bureau of Investigation. Revanna was arrested in a case registered against him in Holenarasipura in Hassan district on April 28. He was accused of sexually harassing a 47-year-old former maid. He has been booked in three cases of sexual assault. There are also charges of rape against him. The cases of sexual abuse came to light after pen-drives containing explicit videos allegedly involving Revanna were reportedly circulated in Hassan, ahead of Lok Sabha polls there on April 26. JD(S) suspended him from the party after cases were filed against him.

The suspect in shooting the family of the first Latina federal judge in New Jersey reportedly complained of a 'feminist infested American judicial system'

The <keyword id="19895344" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Enforcement-Directorate" source="keywords">Enforcement Directorate</keyword> alleged Saturday that the CPI(M) in <keyword id="19896018" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Kerala" source="keywords">Kerala</keyword> was holding proceeds of <keyword id="19899231" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="money-laundering" source="keywords">money laundering</keyword>, as it attached a land parcel and <keyword id="20202062" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="bank-deposits" source="keywords">bank deposits</keyword> worth Rs 73 lakh of the political party in a <keyword id="19913348" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="probe" source="keywords">probe</keyword> linked to the Karuvannur Service Cooperative Bank "scam". Assets worth Rs 28.65 crore of various individuals and entities linked to the case have also been attached by the federal agency after a provisional order under the <keyword id="19912399" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="prevention-of-money-laundering-act" source="keywords">Prevention of Money Laundering Act</keyword> (PMLA) was issued. Official sources said the party may be nam<keyword id="19956083" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="ED" source="keywords">ed</keyword> as an accused in the next supplementary chargesheet to be filed in this case. If so, it will be the second political party to be arraigned as accused in a money laundering investigation after the Aam Aadmi Party. AAP has recently been named by the ED in the Delhi excise policy case. The CPI(M) vehemently denied the charges of wrongdoing and money laundering. The attached assets include 18 immovable properties, valued at Rs 28.65 crore, consisting of lands and buildings in Kerala of the beneficiaries of the "scam", including an immovable property worth Rs 10 lakh registered in the name of a district secretary of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) for a party office, the ED said in a statement. The attachment also includes eight movable properties, including a credit balance of Rs 63.62 lakh in eight "undisclosed" bank accounts of the CPI(M) local area committees in Thrissur, it added. The agency claimed that the CPI(M) received these funds from the beneficiaries as donations through the governing body and the party is "in possession of proceeds of crime" which has been invested in the purchase of immovable properties and credited to its five bank accounts in the Karuvannur Service Cooperative Bank Ltd. The bank is promoted by the party. The CPI(M) rejected the ED charges, saying it would legally and politically fight any move by the agency to arraign it in the case linked to the alleged multi-crore Karuvannur bank scam. Party state secretary M V Govindan alleged that the ED was trying to make opposition parties and their leaders accused in various cases due to political reasons. He also accused the central agency of attempting to create a smokescreen as it had failed to collect any evidence against the party. The ED believes that the land parcel attached by it was meant for the CPI(M) party office and was purchased using alleged kickbacks from the loanees or beneficiaries of the loans sanctioned by the Karuvannur Service Cooperative Bank. The agency has relied on the "confessional" statements of at least two accused in this case who claimed in their statements recorded before a judicial magistrate that the purported irregularities in the bank were orchestrated at the behest of CPI(M) Thrissur district committee leaders. The ED alleged that "bogus loans" were sanctioned by the Karuvannur Service Cooperative Bank on the same property multiple times without the knowledge of members of the society. "Investigation found benami loans were sanctioned to non-members against inflated property valuations in the names of other members and such loan funds were siphoned off and laundered by the accused beneficiaries," it said, adding that the loan amounts were disbursed in cash to avoid a money trail. "Such benami and illegal loans were sanctioned at the behest of the secretary and the governing body of the society in connivance with the then-bank manager, at the behest of the Thrissur district committee, CPI(M). "In return, the Thrissur district committee, CPI(M), collected money in the form of donations and salary cut from the beneficiaries and society committee members into their undisclosed and illegally opened bank accounts in the same society," the agency said. These funds, according to the ED, were utilised for the purchase of land worth Rs 10 lakh by the secretary of the Thrissur district committee of the CPI(M) for the construction of the party office, which has now been attached as proceeds of crime. Govindan said it has been a decades-long practice of registering the office and other assets of party units in the name of the respective district committees. What role does the party have in the office constructed by one of its local committees, he asked. But the ED is now trying to tarnish the image of the CPI(M) in the name of the assets of one such party unit, Govindan claimed. "We will fight it legally and politically. We haven't got any notice in this regard so far," he told reporters. The ED filed a chargesheet in this case against 55 accused entities in November last year. The money laundering case stems from 16 FIRs registered by the <keyword id="20086884" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="kerala-police" source="keywords">Kerala Police</keyword> (<keyword id="20146853" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="crime-branch" source="keywords">Crime Branch</keyword>) in Thrissur in 2010. Four people have been arrested by the ED in this case so far.

A third bail guarantor never came forward, a judge wrote.</li></ul>A federal judge has unsealed the identities of the two people on the hook for Rep. George Santos's $500,000 bond, siding with a group of media organizations — including Insider — that argued their names should be made public."Both Suretors were close family members; one is Defendant's father and the other is Defendant's aunt," a judge wrote in a filing unsealed Thursday.Santos's father is Gercino Antônio dos Santos Jr. and his aunt is named Elma Santos Preven. Additional identifying information in the bond documents remains sealed.A third bail sponsor, who was alluded to during Santos's arraignment, never came forward to sign the bond documents, according to a separate order unsealed Thursday.Federal prosecutors brought a 13-count indictment against Santos, a serial fabulist who represents a portion of New York, in May. They alleged he personally stole donations to his Long Island Congressional campaign operation, illegally took pandemic employment funds, and lied to Congress on financial disclosure documents.Santos <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/george-santos-in-custody-faces-20-years-prison-charges-2023-5">pleaded not guilty to the charges</a>. The magistrate judge overseeing his arraignment allowed him to remain out of jail ahead of his criminal trial as long as he agreed to stay only in New York and Washington, DC. US Magistrate Judge Anne Shields allowed them to be bail sureties anyway because they "agreed to be personally responsible" for Santos."As is common in cases where there is neither property nor cash offered to secure a bond, the Court considered whether the Suretors were truly willing to stand up and make themselves responsible for Defendant's compliance with the terms of his release," Shields said in an order unsealed Thursday.While bond documents are usually made public, Shields made <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/george-santos-bond-guarantors-secret-after-indictment-2023-5">the highly unusual decision to keep them secret</a>, not even indicating on the public docket that they were filed under seal. Shields also hosted a secret meeting with the bail sponsors that did not appear on the public docket.A group of media organizations, which include Insider, <a href="https://www.documentcloud.org/documents/23828361-us-v-santos-23-cv-197-unsealing-request-by-news-organizations">asked US District Judge Joanna Seybert, who has since overtaken the case, to unseal the bond documents</a> and reveal the names of the people who are keeping Santos out of jail.The decision to keep these documents sealed, lawyers at the law firm Davis Wright Tremaine LLP wrote in the filing, violated all precedents regarding the presumption of public access to judicial documents. Even bond documents for Ghislaine Maxwell — the Jeffrey Epstein associate ultimately convicted of trafficking girls to him for sex and sexually abusing some of them herself — were made public. Santos, they further argued, is an elected official representing people who have a right to keep him accountable."Rep. Santos has been criminally charged with fraud that directly relates to his role as an elected official in Congress, eroding public confidence in our government institutions and political leaders," they wrote. "Given Rep. Santos' role as a public servant, access to the identity of the bond sureties will bolster trust in the judicial process here."<h2>Santos said he'd rather go jail than have their identities be public</h2>Joseph Murray, an attorney for Santos, asked Seybert to keep the identities secret anyway, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/george-santos-bond-judge-says-shell-reveal-identities-offering-appeal-2023-6">arguing they faced potential threats if they were publicly associated with Santos</a> and would be subject to a "media frenzy."The Congressman came to prominence shortly after he was elected in 2022, when a series of articles found <a href="https://www.cityandstateny.com/personality/2023/05/george-santos-lies-ranked/383446/">he had lied or misled the public about</a> being a Jew, his mother dying in the 9/11 attacks on the World Trade Center, working in finance at Citigroup, working in finance at Goldman Sachs, owning a "family's firm" that managed $80 million in assets, employing people who died in the Pulse Nightclub shooting, producing the infamous Broadway flop "Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark," graduating from Baruch College, going to Baruch College on a volleyball scholarship, claiming to be a star player on the Baruch College volleyball team, playing on the Baruch College volleyball team in the first place, graduating from New York University, owning several New York properties, and not performing in drag while living in Brazil, among other things.At the same time that Murray asked the judge for secrecy, Murray dropped hints that at least one family member had signed up as a suretor for Santos's bail money. In <a href="https://storage.courtlistener.com/recap/gov.uscourts.nyed.497086/gov.uscourts.nyed.497086.17.7.pdf">a May 31 letter to the House of Representatives Ethics Committee, filed to court on June 5</a>, Murray said he didn't need to disclose to the committee the names of the bond guarantors because of a rule exempting the disclose of gifts from relatives.<div type="image" title="george santos court" height="1665" width="2221" msid="101198599" hostid="261"></div>Murray later made that more explicit, saying that, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/george-santos-people-backing-bond-family-bail-if-named-2023-6">because the bond sponsors were family members</a>, they would not impose undue influence on Santos's votes in Congress. He also said in a filing that one of the three suretors had backed out already and that <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/george-santos-says-rather-be-jailed-than-name-bail-suretors-2023-6">Santos would rather forfeit his $500,000 bond and go to jail</a> than allow the names of those people to become public."My client would rather surrender to pretrial detainment than subject these suretors to what will inevitably come," Murray wrote in a filing.Santos ultimately didn't file a motion to change the conditions of his release, which would have allowed him to go to jail or find new bail sponsors.Outside the federal court in Central Islip <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/george-santos-in-custody-faces-20-years-prison-charges-2023-5" rel="">after he entered his not-guilty plea</a> in May, Santos told members of the media that they would "never" find out the identities of the sureties."That is information you'll never get," he said. "Because your intention is to go harass them and make their life miserable. You're not getting that."In her ruling unsealed Thursday, Seybert wrote that Santos personally fed the "media frenzy" he had tried to use as an excuse to keep the identities private."The Suretors did not come before the Court until May 15, 2023, five days after Defendant's highly publicized arraignment and plea; it is spurious to contend that the Suretors were unaware of the media reaction that had occurred earlier," Seybert wrote. Putorti, a non-attorney who has since 2014 served as a town justice in Whitehall, near Albany, pulled out a semiautomatic handgun while presiding over a criminal case in late 2015 or early 2016, said New York State's Commission on Judicial Conduct.Putorti, 52, boasted about the incident during a 2018 meeting of the Washington County Magistrates Association, <a href="https://apnews.com/856f2676e9c504d64c0e2126ae477845">per AP.</a> He said he pulled out his gun on what he described as a "large Black man" and a "big Black man" who was "built like a football player" and "about 6 feet 9 inches tall" because the defendant approached the bench "too quickly," the commission said.In fact, the defendant was approximately 6 feet tall and weighed 165 pounds, said the commission.The commission, in its determination, said it was "troubled" by Putorti's "repeated description" of the defendant's race.Putorti was required to discuss the courthouse incident with his supervisor and later signed a counseling memo agreeing never to display, use, or threaten a firearm in court except in response to "deadly physical force," the commission said.The supervisor, Glens Falls City Court Judge Gary Hobbs, said that a defendant being "large" or Putorti feeling nervous would not be sufficient cause for him to pull out his gun, according to the commission, per AP.The <a href="https://nypost.com/2022/09/22/ny-judge-pulled-gun-on-defendant-in-court-officials/">New York Post reported</a> that Putorti also bragged about the courthouse incident to his cousin, a journalist student at Hofstra University, in an article published in the Long Island Report. He reportedly described pointing his gun at "someone" who came rushing towards him in the article.The commission found that Putorti's conduct in court demonstrated that he "lacks the appropriate judicial temperament" and that "his actions irreparably undermined confidence" in his ability to serve as a judge.It also found that he "showed his lack of attention to his ethical obligations when he engaged in improper fundraising" by using his personal Facebook account to promote fundraisers for his Elks Lodge, a fraternal order, on at least seven occasions.Nine of the commission panel's 10 members concurred with the decision to remove Putorti from office. He has 30 days to accept the decision or take it to the Court of Appeals for review.The commission's administrator Robert H. Tembeckjian said in a statement: "The courthouse is where threats or acts of gun violence are meant to be resolved, not generated."But for the fact that it happened in this case, it would otherwise be unfathomable for a judge to brandish a weapon in court without provocation or justification.
