Another <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2022/07/09/us/sexual-abuse-jrotc.html">said</a> she had a gun held to her head by an instructor while she was forced to kneel at his bedside.</p><p>While the high rate of sexual assault in the military has been <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2021/08/03/magazine/military-sexual-assault.html#:~:text=Of%20the%20more%20than%206%2C200,many%20convictions%20as%20in%202019.">well-documented</a>, reports of sexual assault at military academies are <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/sexual-assault-reports-at-military-academies-increase-by-32-percent-2020-1">also increasing</a>.  </p><p>In Mississippi, Victoria Bauer told the Times that she dreamed of being a Marine and recalled being assaulted by her 45-year-old ROTC instructor when she was 15, worried that fighting him would risk her military career. </p><p>"I gave all the body-language signals that I didn't want it," Bauer told <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2022/07/09/us/sexual-abuse-jrotc.html">The New York Times</a>. "I didn't feel like I had a choice."</p><p>Bauer described carrying the lingering emotional scars from the assault for years. She said her experience shaped her perspective on men, the military, and justice. She never became a Marine. </p><p>"The people who are supposed to be out protecting our country, do they really protect their own people?" she <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2022/07/09/us/sexual-abuse-jrotc.html">said</a>.</p>

More than 60,000 people have <a href="https://petitions.whitehouse.gov/petition/allow-cadet-peter-wang-receive-full-honors-military-burial" target="_blank" rel="noopener">signed the petition</a> as of midday on Tuesday. </p><p><span>Wang's "selfless and heroic actions have led to the survival of dozens in the area. Wang died a hero, and deserves to be treated as such, and deserves a full honors military burial," the petition reads. </span></p><p><span>"He died a gentleman holding the door for other students," Wang's friend, Kelsey, <a href="http://transcripts.cnn.com/TRANSCRIPTS/1802/16/ip.01.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">told</a> CNN. "He was always happy and bubbly and smiley."</p><p><span>"He is so brave. Watson, an aspiring naval pilot, recently graduated from the US Naval Academy.</p><p>According to a Facebook post from his brother, Adam, Watson had informed first responders of the shooter's details and location, despite "being shot multiple times." </p><p>"Today has been the worst day of my life," Adam said in the Facebook post. "My youngest brother gave his life for his country in a senseless shooting."</p><p>"He died a hero and we are beyond proud but there is a hole in our hearts that can never be filled," Adam added. </p><p>Watson, who was conducting flight training at the base, was the officer on deck during the shooting, his father, Benjamin, told <a href="https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/nation/2019/12/07/joshua-kaleb-watson-pensacola-navy-base-shooting-victim/4364650002/">USA Today</a>. He added that his son wanted to join the military since he was five years old.</p><p>"Heavily wounded, he made his way out to flag down first responders and gave an accurate description of the shooter," Benjamin told USA Today. "He died serving his country."</p><p>Nineteen-year-old Mohammed Haitham of Florida, another victim, was also hailed for his service, his mother, Evelyn, told local media.</p><p>"The commander of his school did call me," Evelyn, a Navy veteran, told the <a href="https://www.tampabay.com/news/breaking-news/2019/12/07/st-petersburg-track-star-among-the-victims-of-pensacola-shooting/">Tampa Bay Times</a>. "He told me my son did try to stop the shooter."</p><p>Haitham graduated from high school in 2018, joined the Navy, and had recently graduated from basic training. <p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div><ul><li><strong>The suspected Florida high-school shooter fled the scene on Wednesday by concealing himself within a crowd of students, authorities said.</strong></li><li><strong>Police arrested him in a nearby neighborhood after a manhunt.</strong></li><li><strong>Broward County Sheriff Scott Israel said Thursday that there was an armed officer at the high school who never encountered the shooter.</strong></li></ul><p><br>As a <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/florida-high-school-shooting-coral-springs-2018-2" target="_blank" rel="noopener">deadly mass shooting</a> unfolded at a high school in Parkland, Florida on Wednesday, students rushed to evacuate the school, some filing out in orderly lines with their hands tucked behind their heads.</br></p><p>Among the fleeing students was Nikolas Cruz, the 19-year-old former student and suspected gunman. He had blended himself into a crowd to escape the scene, <a href="http://www.sheriff.org/PIO/News/Pages/ACTIVE-SHOOTER-AT-STONEMAN-DOUGLAS-HIGH-SCHOOL.aspx" target="_blank" rel="noopener">the Broward County Sheriff's Office</a> said.</p><p>Sheriff Scott Israel said at a press conference Thursday that the high school employed an armed officer who was on campus during the shooting, but <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/armed-officer-florida-high-school-never-saw-shooter-2018-2" target="_blank" rel="noopener">the officer never encountered Cruz</a>.</p><p>After a manhunt, local police eventually arrested Cruz in a nearby neighborhood and brought him to a local hospital after he appeared to have difficulty breathing.</p><p>One man who witnessed the arrest, Michael Nembhard, <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/morning-mix/wp/2018/02/15/florida-shooting-suspect-nikolas-cruz-guns-depression-and-a-life-in-free-fall/?utm_term=.c84a82f12cb4" target="_blank" rel="noopener">told The Washington Post</a> he believed Cruz had made his way through the Coral Springs neighborhood on foot when a lone police officer approached him.</p><p>Nembhard said he heard the cop yell, "Get on the ground!" and saw what appeared to be a teenager lying on the grass. He said within minutes a horde of officers and police cruisers descended on the scene.</p><p>The Broward County Sheriff's Office later said they identified Cruz as the suspect after watching footage from the school's security cameras.</p><p>Students who witnessed the scene said Cruz was wearing a military uniform from his US Army Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (JROTC) when he was arrested, <a href="http://www.miamiherald.com/news/local/community/broward/article200223414.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">The Miami Herald reported</a>. Video footage from Cruz's arrest shows him wearing a maroon-colored shirt or sweater.</p><p>Police charged Cruz with <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/florida-high-school-shooting-nikolas-cruz-charged-with-17-murders-2018-2" target="_blank" rel="noopener">17 counts of premeditated murder</a>. Police had to track down the suspected Florida high school shooter after he escaped the scene by blending in with fleeing students

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Many college-bound students will be considering taking a <keyword id="2402864" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Gap-year">gap year</keyword> this year in light of virtual learning in the fall.</li><li>Experts agreed that if you really want to have a successful gap year that boosts your resume and admission into top schools, you need to set clear goals about what you'd like to accomplish.</li><li>Consider getting work experience, volunteering, studying, teaching yourself new skills, or launching a business during this time.</li></ul><p><keyword id="6360288" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="College">College</keyword>-bound high school graduates have a big choice to make: They have to decide whether to take a gap year in the middle of a pandemic or attend college as planned, even if it means attending virtually. </p><p>Under normal circumstances, some students would take off a year between high school and college to gain life experiences that would improve the story they would eventually share with both admissions committees and potential employers. </p><p>Traditionally, privileged students, who had strong academic records, spent their gap years traveling the world or gaining work experience — or both. Those options are now limited as a result of lockdowns, border closures, layoffs, and general uncertainty caused by the coronavirus crisis. </p><p>Still, some experts <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/gap-year-high-school-college-everything-to-know-pandemic-2020-5">say they expect more students to take a gap year</a> this year. </p><p>"Whether students refuse to pay full tuition to attend college online or whether they are unsure of safety when arriving on campus in the fall, many more students are planning to take a gap year this year," said Daniel Lee, cofounder of Solomon Admissions Consulting in New York.</p><p>Making the most of a gap year, however, will be more challenging than ever. In fact, some don't recommend taking one, even during this unprecedented situation. </p><p>"Start college," said Brian Taylor, managing director of Ivy Coach admissions consultancy in New York. "If you're worried you won't be making new friends from your childhood bedroom, know that you are not alone. Everyone is experiencing similar feelings. And you'll all start college together — and make friends — in due time."</p><p>But for those still willing to take the plunge, here's what experts say you should do to take a gap year that's truly beneficial for you and your career.</p><h2>Set clear goals</h2><p>There's a difference between a gap year and deferring admission, said Patricia Grant, senior associate dean for the Undergraduate Program at Georgetown University's McDonough School of Business in Washington, DC. A gap year is spent on enriching yourself, whereas a deferment is spent caring for a sick loved one or waiting out a pandemic. </p><p>Grant said that it's vital to determine which one you're pursuing.</p><p>"Any <keyword id="6355010" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="student">student</keyword> or family considering pursuing a gap year after high school really needs to think about what their gap year goals are, and those goals will have to guide them along the path of discerning whether that gap year will help them to meet those stated goals," said Grant.</p><p>The McDonough School advises students who want to take a gap year to set goals around networking, applying to jobs or internships where they could build professional skills, or providing community service that in some way relates to their interests and aspirations. </p><p>Some will use the time to improve their candidacy at top universities and colleges. </p><p>"For students who want to take a gap year to reapply to a higher ranked college than the ones they were accepted by, it's critical to map out the gap year to maximize three things:  standardized testing performance on the SAT, ACT, and SAT 2 subject tests, intellectual vitality, and angularity in extracurricular activities," said Lee. </p><h2>Pick up new skills</h2><p>Students interested in gaining work experience should engage their current employers or internship supervisors to see if there's potential to stay on into the fall. Grant said those opportunities are rarer now because many companies are "focused on solidifying their workforce and making sure they have viability long term to withstand the challenges of the current pandemic." But she also pointed out that it's not impossible to land one, especially if you already work for an organization. </p><p>Volunteering or helping with research projects is another way to boost your resume during the gap year, said Lee. </p><p>"For students interested in business and finance, this could mean doing research with an economics professor or interning at a smaller bank to gain substantive experience in the field," he added. "For students interested in computer science, this could mean self-teaching themselves a programming language like Java or C++ or interning at a small tech company to gain substantive work experience. For students who want to attend medical school, this could mean volunteering at COVID-19 hospitals or doing medical research with a professor."</p><p>Those who might not know where to start can try to get a mentor. Mary Kurek, president and CEO of Frontrunners Development, Inc., has been mentoring a high school student, Marley, for a couple of years because her parents approached Kurek when their daughter showed an interest in health and life sciences. Before the pandemic, the mentee pursued an internship in the medical or health field. Kurek helped Marley get in touch with a nearby lab that had sparked her interest. </p><p>The lab told her to get in touch in April about the possibility of summer work. But April was the middle of the coronavirus crisis. So, Marley asked if she could sign on sooner than the summer. The lab, which handles clinical trials, agreed and is even paying her for the internship. </p><p>"Marley is making this gap in her traditional education count for so much more than what an average 16-year-old would have," said Kurek. "Opportunities are out there. Marley told me that there are three other interns in college working at this same lab. By the way, she is in JROTC and currently is aiming to head into the Navy for her higher ed." </p><h2>Take initiative</h2><p>Aside from teaching yourself certain skills, Lee suggested starting a nonprofit related to your area of interest or pursuing some other work project for yourself. </p><p>"Students who excel during a gap year have the maturity to handle that kind of freedom," said Lee. "This means developing goals, a definitive plan with a timeline, and a system for accountability and reflection."</p><p>Michael Heiman, a 2020 graduate of New York University <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-to-get-into-new-york-university-stern-school-of-business-mba">Stern School of Business'</a> undergraduate college, pursued entrepreneurship upon graduating because the job market was challenging amid the pandemic and founded a music tech company, Clique Networking. If the startup doesn't succeed, Heiman said he still will have a good story to share with potential employers and a set of newly acquired skills. </p><p>"You don't have to be the next Uber either," Heiman said. "Do what you love and what you know, learn new skills, and try to work hard despite the situation."</p>

"And they had - she had taken that, of what I had briefed on, and actually wrote that question out for me."</p><p>"That seems dishonest," Carlson said.&#xa0;</p><p>"It definitely did and that's kinda why I didn't go last night," Haab replied. "Originally I had thought it was going to be more of my own question and my own say and she had actually said that over the phone, that I needed to stick to the script."</p><p>But CNN says there is "absolutely no truth" to Haab's claims, which he <a href="https://www.realclearpolitics.com/video/2018/02/22/shooting_survivor_colton_haab_cnn_gave_me_scripted_question_after_denying_question_about_armed_guards.html">originally made on local TV news</a>&#xa0;in Miami.</p><p>A CNN source told Business Insider that CNN executive producer Carrie Stevenson&#xa0;talked with Haab on the phone after Haab submitted several questions to the network. The two decided on the call that Haab would ask one question concerning training teachers and school staff to carry arms, which Haab had talked about in <a href="https://twitter.com/JoePerticone/status/966436217687552005?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw&amp;ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.huffingtonpost.com%2Fentry%2Fcnn-florida-scripted-question_us_5a8ed6c7e4b0617d463ae671">an interview with "Fox &amp; Friends" on Tuesday.</a>&#xa0;Haab suggested that football coach Aaron Feis, who was killed while protecting students, could have stopped the shooter had he been armed.</p><p>The source says the final version of the question was made up of the "the verbatim language" Haab used on "Fox &amp; Friends" about Feis in addition to his question about training teachers to be armed.</p><p>The source said that Haab's father, Glenn Haab, pulled his son out of the event after insisting that the younger Haab deliver a lengthy speech providing context for three questions he wanted to ask lawmakers. CNN said the speech was too long, given time constraints, and asked Haab to "stick to" the question he originally submitted to CNN.</p><p><span>"We did not in any way craft any part of the question or statement that proceeded it," the source said.&#xa0;</span></p><p><span>"CNN did not provide or script questions for anyone in last night's town hall, nor have we ever," CNN spokesman Richard Hudock said. "After seeing an interview with Colton Haab, we invited him to participate in our town hall along with other students and administrators from Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School. Colton's father withdrew his name from participation before the forum began, which we regretted but respected. We welcome Colton to join us on CNN today to discuss his views on school safety."</span></p><p><span>The CNN source added that neither Fox nor Carlson asked CNN for comment on Haab's claims.&#xa0;</span></p><p><span>Haab offered to read the question he would have asked at the town hall while on Carlson's show, but Carlson didn't take him up on it.&#xa0;</span></p><p>On Thursday night, the president tweeted about the segment, accusing CNN of being "fake news."&#xa0;</p><p>"'School shooting survivor says he quit @CNN Town Hall after refusing scripted question.' @TuckerCarlson.
