It's no easy game," Zepeda, the winner, said.</li><li>Watch the highlights of the <keyword id="2349386" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="top-rank">Top Rank</keyword> show right here.</li></ul><p>Whoever said the sport of boxing would suffer without a live gate perhaps did not anticipate the chaotic violence which Jose Zepeda and Ivan Baranchyk could bring to a behind-closed-doors ring on a Saturday night in Las Vegas.</p><p>When the opening bell chimed on the ESPN broadcast, just before the cameras zoomed into the impending action, a sign could be seen in the background which said <em>"This is boxing"</em> in a font often associated with Sin City's neon.</p><p>That sign was wrong.</p><p>You see, this was not boxing in the purest of senses, as this was for those who like seeing fighters throw away the textbooks by abandoning the jab in favor of brain-rattling right hooks.</p><p>This was for those who like seeing knockdowns tallied like a high-scoring soccer game, when offenses thrive, defenses go walkabout, and somebody gets sent off for losing their cool.</p><p>This, my friends, was a fight designed with you and I in mind — the unapologetic savages out there who consider mindless professional face-punching fun.</p><h2>Zepeda vs. Baranchyk is a round of the year, knockout of the year, and fight of the year contender</h2><div type="image" title="Jose Zepeda and Ivan Baranchyk" height="1290" width="1800" msid="78483547" hostid="261"></div><p>Zepeda had to climb off the canvas twice in the first round and exchanged a knockdown with Baranchyk in the second, meaning there had been four knockdowns in six minutes alone.</p><p>According to Compubox data sent to Insider, Baranchyk only landed five jabs by the end of the third — two more than Zepeda.</p><p>This was all about the power punches, with Zepeda beginning to get the better of exchanges by scoring a knockdown in the third, the fourth, and then getting up from the floor again to finish the fight for good in the fifth.</p><p>The final sequence, a two punch combination which included a right hand over the top and a left hand rammed into the mouth, buckled Baranchyk's legs and he fell awkwardly to the floor. Shortly after, he was taken to hospital in an ambulance.</p><p>It was all over.</p><p><strong>Watch the carnage right here:</strong></p><iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/AhTUv6B-BGg" frameborder="0"></iframe><p>The ping pong pugilism won plaudits from many pundits including the prominent boxing reporter <a href="https://twitter.com/KevinI/status/1312606474065997825" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Kevin Iole who said on Twitter</a> that it was "one of the best all-time fights in boxing in Las Vegas."</p><p>Zepeda had survived four knockdowns to score the greatest win of his career, advancing his record to 33 wins (26 knockouts) against two losses.</p><p>"I feel great because I won the fight," Zepeda said after the win. "It was a hard fight, and I'm thinking, 'Man, boxing is hard. It's no easy game.'</p><p>"I know I'm tough. I didn't know how tough I was. Tonight, I showed myself, too. I've never been in a fight like this. A violent, pandemic-era battle with 8 knockdowns and a post-fight ambulance is being heralded as one of boxing's best ever bouts

"Farts, feet, loud mouths, bad hygiene, drunks, getting hit on by passengers, being asked, 'Do you work here' or 'What airline is this?," escorting passengers off the plane for idiocy, people trying to sleep in the isle, passengers smoking in the laboratory, children leaving Gold Fish crumbs all over their row, and vomit are all in a day's work for us."</p><p>And it's all worth it thanks to the extraordinary perk that comes with the job: <strong>flexibility</strong>.</p><p>"I make my schedule and go wherever I want, whenever I want," Zepeda says. </p><p>For flights attendants, the advantages of flexibility come in many forms.</p><p>For Zepeda, it means that, even though he is based in New York, he is able to work on getting his pilot's license in Phoenix, Arizona. To do this, he says he generally works trips that give him more than 24-hour layovers in Phoenix so that he can go to his flight school in the morning and then fly back out to New York or Miami in the evening.</p><p>Still, this flexibility has its limits, and for Zepeda, there is still a fear of missing out.</p><p>"While the flexibility is unmatched, every flight attendant has missed a holiday with their family, a friend's birthday, a sibling's graduation, and even a close someone's funeral," Zepeda says. "As much as we try to plan for certain days off, we are not always able to hold the trips we hope for or are able to trade or drop."</p><p>Flight attendants usually submit their monthly scheduling choices in a process called "bidding," and the more seniority they have, the more they're able to determine which routes they fly and days they get to take off.</p><p>"The upside to this is that the longer you stay, the more seniority you gain. The more seniority you have, the more you can control or manipulate your schedule," he explains.</p><p>Luckily, Zepeda says flight attendants are uniquely adept at making the most out of bad situations.</p><p>"One of the best qualities about flight attendants in general is that we are some of the most resourceful people on the planet," he says. A flight attendant shares the best part of his job - and it isn't the free travel

<ul class="summary-list"><li><keyword id="3893074" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Anthony-Pettis">Anthony Pettis</keyword> and <keyword id="9579757" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="clay-collard">Clay Collard</keyword> headline the <keyword id="1715557" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="PFL">PFL</keyword> 1 <keyword id="6403489" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="mma">MMA</keyword> event broadcast Friday on ESPN.</li><li>Pettis is a former UFC champion and Collard attracted acclaim for his boxing prowess mid-pandemic.</li><li>Both fighters talk a good game, and Pettis promised fireworks when they finally throw down.</li></ul><p>Anthony Pettis, a self-described "straight-up G killer," is confident of winning big against boxing's lockdown cult hero Clay Collard at the first event of the 2021 Professional Fighter's League season Friday on ESPN.</p><p>Pettis is a former UFC lightweight champion and has shared the combat arena with some of the biggest names in mixed martial arts.</p><p>He signed a deal with the PFL last year and makes his debut for the company at PFL 1, which takes place behind-closed-doors at the Ocean Casino Resort in Atlantic City.</p><p>The American headlines the show against his compatriot Collard, who emerged as a hardcore fight fan favorite in 2020. Collard appeared in a number of Top Rank boxing shows at the start of the pandemic, and he kept winning.</p><p>Though there appears to be a talent gap between Pettis, and all his accomplishments, and Collard, who is as game an underdog as they come, there is an opportunity for the latter to score the scalp of a lifetime this week.</p><p>"Anthony Pettis brings a lot of weapons Clay hasn't seen before," PFL analyst and commentator <keyword id="5496669" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Kenny-Florian">Kenny Florian</keyword> told Insider. "But I think Clay is comfortable [in the underdog role].</p><p>"The way that Pettis performs will tell us a lot about how motivated he is for the entire tournament, and for Collard, he has an opportunity to beat one of the favorites and to show who he is."</p><p>Pettis told Insider there's "definitely" a talent gap between him and Collard. "I see that with most guys I fight. I feel like I am who I am for a reason," he said.</p><p>"I've been in this game for a long time fighting the who's who of mixed martial arts. These guys are all dangerous, don't get me wrong. But I see myself as being on a different level than they are."</p><p>Benson Henderson, Donald Cerrone, Rafael dos Anjos, Eddie Alvarez, Charles Oliveira, Max Holloway, Michael Chiesa, Stephen Thompson, Tony Ferguson, and Nate Diaz are just some of the big name opponents Pettis has fought in his career.</p><p>And though PFL will be a new experience as it is structured as an NFL and NBA-style season, with a playoffs and a finals to work toward, for Pettis, regular competition is nothing new.</p><p>"It's going to be scary to see how good I get this year," Pettis said.</p><h2>Collard says competing as a boxer has enhanced his MMA</h2><div type="image" title="Clay Collard boxing" height="1315" width="1800" msid="82201138" hostid="261"></div><p>Top Rank was the world's first major boxing promotion to restart its live events business during the pandemic, and attracted widespread praise for the shows it held inside a conference center at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.</p><p>At those events, <a href="https://www.insider.com/video-elvis-rodriguez-kos-his-opponent-with-a-jab-2020-7" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Elvis Rodriguez further established himself as one of boxing's top prospects.</a> </p><p>Jose Zepeda and Ivan Baranchyk also returned the "2020 Fight of the Year" for a bout that featured <a href="https://www.insider.com/video-zepeda-and-baranchyks-war-is-fight-of-the-year-2020-10" target="_blank" rel="noopener">eight total knockdowns were scored</a> and a post-fight ambulance.</p><p>And then there was Collard, who <a href="https://www.insider.com/clay-collard-former-ufc-becomes-one-of-boxings-biggest-hits-2020-7" target="_blank" rel="noopener">became the talk of the summer</a> for his succession of Vegas victories.</p><p>Collard fought six times in 2020, and four times at Top Rank's bubble in Las Vegas - advancing his pro boxing record to 9-4-3 with 4 KOs.</p><p>He told Insider <a href="https://www.insider.com/clay-collard-wants-world-titles-in-boxing-and-mma-2020-12" target="_blank" rel="noopener">the experiences helped him become a better mixed martial artist</a>. "Honestly, I think getting back to my roots and back to my boxing has benefitted my all-round game," Collard said.</p><p>"I still haven't stopped training mixed martial arts, but I can tell the difference in sparring. My eyes are better. I can see things coming at me sooner, I'm hitting harder, and my hand-speed is faster.</p><p>"So, I think it's improved my fight game tremendously. I'm just excited to get back to PFL, MMA, and showcase my skills."</p><p>Though he's a striker at heart, Collard said he remains confident of finishing MMA fights either on his feet or on the ground.</p><p>"I think everybody in PFL is going to try to take me down - they're stupid if they don't," he said.</p><p>"I think I am one of the best strikers in the game today, and I decided to go to PFL to prove that but I still think I'm dangerous anywhere.</p><p>"If they want to lean more toward the striking, that definitely benefits me. I consider myself more a striker but you've got to be well-rounded and well-prepared for anywhere the fight goes in mixed martial arts."</p><p>The PFL analyst Florian is curious about the ways in which Collard can integrate his boxing learnings into the pro MMA game.</p><p>"It all depends on how he plans on integrating his boxing, and integrating it for Anthony Pettis," Florian told us.</p><p>"Pettis has an ability to thwart even the best strikers in the game - defeating Wonderboy [Stephen Thompson] proved that.</p><p>"There's not a lot of people who have been able to knock out, or out-strike, someone like Wonderboy, and Pettis was able to do that.</p><p>"On the feet, it'll be really exciting. I wouldn't be surprised if there was a knockout, and Clay Collard is certainly able to deliver that himself, but from what we've seen Pettis has more weapons on the feet."</p><h2>Pettis is wary of Collard, even if he feels he's a level above him</h2><div type="image" title="Anthony Pettis PFL MMA" height="1000" width="1500" msid="82201140" hostid="261"></div><p>Pettis said he's got a wide range of techniques and disciplines he wants to show off throughout the PFL season, and doesn't think Collard will have seen kicks thrown from the angles he throws them.</p><p>"But what makes him dangerous is the fact he's got nothing to lose," Pettis told us. "He can just bite down on his mouthpiece and go for broke, because if he ends up getting knocked out, well, he's supposed to get knocked out."</p><p>He continued: "I feel like I'm better than everybody. I feel like if I have the mindset that I'm the superior fighter, I'll have the better performance than focusing on him having nothing to lose.</p><p>"The difference is I've fought Wonderboy, Max Holloway, Ben Henderson twice, and Cerrone twice. I've seen every style. I've fought great strikers, wrestlers.</p><p>"I've fought Michael Chiesa who was way bigger than me. Charles Oliveira - and he's fighting for the world title.</p><p>"Who is Anthony Pettis as a fighter? I'm a straight-up G killer, man. I fight everybody, anybody, and I do very well."</p><p>On why people should tune in Friday, Pettis said it's because there's no way this fight lasts the distance. There'll be fireworks, a knockout, and another highlight-reel performance to add to his already-hulking legacy.</p>

Salvador Cienfuegos Zepeda, <a href="http://pulsoslp.com.mx/2016/03/16/lucha-vs-el-narco-no-nos-tocaba-general-cienfuegos/">in an interview</a> with Mexican news outlet Pulso in mid-March.</p><p>"One of those was when we entered fully combat against drugs," he continued.</p><p>This deployment, which <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/militarized-police-violence-in-latin-america" target="_blank">ramped up</a> under former President Felipe Calderon, left Mexico's armed forces to deal with "a problem that is not ours," Cienfuegos <a href="http://www.insightcrime.org/news-briefs/a-mistake-for-mexico-s-military-to-fight-drug-traffickers-secretary-of-defense" target="_blank">said</a>. </p><p>"The military is not intended for the work it does today," Cienfuegos <a href="http://www.insightcrime.org/news-briefs/a-mistake-for-mexico-s-military-to-fight-drug-traffickers-secretary-of-defense">said</a>. The number rose from 182 in 2006 to a peak of 1,800 in 2009, falling only slightly to 1,626 in 2011, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/militarized-police-violence-in-latin-america" target="_blank">according to a report</a> from the University of San Diego's Trans-Border Institute.</p><p>Mexican political scientist Jose Merino wrote in a 2011 Nexos article <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/militarized-police-violence-in-latin-america" target="_blank">there was</a> "a causal effect between the deployment of joint military operations and the rise of the murder rate" in the parts of Mexico where those operations took place. That same research found that there could have been more than <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/militarized-police-violence-in-latin-america" target="_blank">7,000 fewer homicides</a> between 2008 and 2009 had soldiers not been deployed to fight organized crime.</p><p>An international commission also <a href="http://www.sinembargo.mx/29-03-2016/1641357" target="_blank">noted recently</a> that 2% of the Mexican population, or about 1.65 million people, were displaced by violence or the risk of violence durin<span style="background-color: #ffffff;">g Calder</span>on's time in office.</p><p>Even now, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/militarized-police-violence-in-latin-america" target="_blank">there are signs</a> that the Mexican government does not intend to reduce the military's role in domestic security, despite what the UN high commissioner for human rights called a "<a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/militarized-police-violence-in-latin-america" target="_blank">very bleak</a><span>" outlook for a country "wracked by high levels of insecurity."</span></p><h2>'They are responsible for nothing'</h2><p>Cienfuegos has <a href="http://pulsoslp.com.mx/2016/03/16/lucha-vs-el-narco-no-nos-tocaba-general-cienfuegos/">stressed</a> the military was not taking on the duties of police, but rather "helping [the police] with our means, with our resources." Honduras, El Salvador, and Guatemala have all <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/militarized-police-violence-in-latin-america" target="_blank">created joint police-military forces</a>, and relied on soldiers to combat gangs. Brazilian military police deployed in Sao Paulo have <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/militarized-police-violence-in-latin-america" target="_blank">killed thousands</a> over the last 20 years.</p><p>In Venezuela, where efforts at police reform have been scrapped, military units have been put on the streets in policing roles, and they have often <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/militarized-police-violence-in-latin-america" target="_blank">gotten involved in the very crimes</a> they are supposed to be fighting.</p><p>Despite these often violent results, governments and citizens throughout the region still <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/militarized-police-violence-in-latin-america" target="_blank">express support for using the military</a> in domestic-security roles.</p><p>The Latin America and Caribbean region has registered <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/militarized-police-violence-in-latin-america" target="_blank">one-third of the world's total homicides</a>, despite having just 8% of its population. That helped make the region <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/the-50-most-violent-cities-in-the-world-2015-1" target="_blank">home to 42 of the 50 most violent</a> non-war-zone cities on the planet, according to the <span>Mexico Citizens Council for Public Security.</span></p><p>With <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/mexico-homicide-rate-and-attacks-on-military" target="_blank">violence surging in Mexico</a>, it seems unlikely that day-to-day life for many Mexicans - and the role the military has in it - is unlikely to change soon.</p><p>"<span>The de facto reality is that you have a situation that would be very shocking to the average American citizen. The idea of soldiers driving up and down the main streets of your city with M16s is exactly what the NRA is terrified of," University of San Diego professor <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/militarized-police-violence-in-latin-america" target="_blank">David Shirk told Business Insider</a> last year.
