<ul class="summary-list"><li><keyword id="12889558" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="prince" source="Orion">Prince</keyword> Hamzah bin Hussein renounced his royal title on Sunday due to "personal convictions."</li><li>In a statement shared on Twitter, the royal blamed the "modern methods of our institutions."</li></ul><p><keyword id="12188904" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="jordan" source="Orion">Jordan</keyword>'s Prince Hamzah bin Hussein is <a href="https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-middle-east-60976314">renouncing his prince title</a> due to his "personal convictions," he said in a statement on Sunday that was translated by the BBC. </p><p>Prince Hamzah, the 42-year-old half-brother of King Abdullah II of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan, posted a picture of his statement to Twitter <a href="https://twitter.com/HamzahHKJ/status/1510619201827917827">announcing his decision to abandon the title</a> and his reason for doing so. </p><p>"Following what I have witnessed in recent years, I have come to the conclusion that my personal convictions which my father instilled in me, and which I tried hard in my life to adhere to, are not in line with the approaches, trends, and modern methods of our institutions," his statement said, according to the BBC. </p><p>"From the matter of honesty to God and conscience, I see nothing but to transcend and abandon the title of prince. I had the great honor of serving my beloved country and my dear people over the years of my life," the statement continued. </p><p>He concluded: "I will remain as I have always been and as long as I live, loyal to our beloved Jordan."</p><div type="image" title="King of Jordan Abdullah II with his wife, Queen Rania and brother, Crown Prince Hamzeh in Ahman, Jordan." height="3000" width="2439" msid="90668610" hostid="261"></div><p>According to the Jordanian tourism board's website, Prince Hamzah is the <a href="https://international.visitjordan.com/page/8/The-Royal-Family">oldest of four children born to King Hussein and Queen Noor,</a> who married on June 15, 1978. King Hussein had three sons – one of whom is the now-monarch Abdullah II – and five daughters from three other marriages. </p><p>Prince Hamzah was named crown prince of Jordan in 1999 upon the death of his father, but was too young to be named a successor, the BBC reported. Instead, Abdullah II ascended the <keyword id="12306041" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="throne" source="Orion">throne</keyword> and stripped Prince Hamzah of his crown prince title in 2004.</p><p>Prince Hamzah's decision to reject his title is the latest in a series of ongoing feuds he has had with the palace and King Abdullah II. In April 2021, Business Insider's Bill Bostock reported that <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/jordan-prince-hamzah-swears-allegiance-king-abdullah-coup-accusation-2021-4?r=US&amp;IR=T">Prince Hamzah pledged allegiance to his half-brother</a> after he was accused of plotting to seize the throne. </p><p>Prince Hamzah, who said he was under house arrest at the time, released <a href="https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-middle-east-56629006">a video that was shared with the BBC</a>, denying the accusations and saying he was being punished for speaking out against corruption. Prince Hamzah said the Jordanian military had detained him at his home and cut his communications other than satellite internet. </p><p>Speaking about Jordan's political landscape in the video, he said "even to criticize a small aspect of a policy leads to arrest and abuse by the security services."</p><p>He added: "It has reached the point where no one is able to speak or express an opinion on anything without being bullied, arrested, harassed, and threatened."  </p><p>In March, <a href="https://kingabdullah.jo/en/news/king-receives-letter-prince-hamzah">Prince Hamzah apologized to his brother and the Jordanian people</a>, according to a letter released by the Royal Hashemite Court. In the letter, Prince Hamzah appears to "bear responsibility for the stances I have taken and the offences I have committed." According to the court's statement, Prince Hamza called his brother an "inspiring leader and a compassionate brother" and vowed that his behavior would not be repeated.</p><p>The Royal Hashemite Court did not immediately respond to Insider's request for comment.</p>

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Deputy prime minister Ayman Safadi said the government has foiled a <keyword id="6371619" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="plot">plot</keyword>, following several arrests.</li><li>Prince Hamza, the Jordanian king's half-brother, said he is under house arrest.</li><li>Allies, including Saudi Arabia and the US, expressed support for the king.</li></ul><p>The deputy prime minister of <keyword id="6358619" type="LOCATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="jordan">Jordan</keyword>, Ayman Safadi, has said that a plot to destabilize the country has been foiled.</p><p><a href="https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2021-04-03/jordan-arrests-royal-family-member-others-on-security-concerns">According to Bloomberg</a>, the plot allegedly involved <keyword id="552440" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="King-Abdullah-II">King Abdullah II</keyword>'s half-brother, former Crown Prince Hamza Bin Hussein, Safadi said at a news conference in Amman, the nation's capital, on Sunday.</p><p>Safadi also said more than 16 people were arrested, including Prince Hamza, who was placed under house arrest on Saturday.</p><p>"There was an effort to target Jordan's security and stability, this effort was foiled," Safadi said, but gave no evidence to back up the claims.</p><p>Jordan, a US ally, often acts as a force for moderation in the turbulent region, making its stability essential. In August, the US provided the kingdom with <a href="https://www.jordantimes.com/news/local/jordan-receives-around-700-million-us-grant">$700 million in aid</a>.</p><p>On Saturday, chairman of the joint chiefs of staff, Major General Yousef Huneiti, denied reports that Prince Hamza had been arrested. He added that he had been ordered to "stop activities that are being exploited to target Jordan's security and stability."</p><p>Prince Hamza has denied the allegations, telling the BBC he was "not part of any conspiracy," in a <a href="https://www.bbc.com/news/world-middle-east-56626370" target="_blank" title="Link to video" rel="nofollow noopener">video</a> provided by his lawyer.</p><p>"There is no conspiracy here. Whatever concoction they're attempting to create or whatever narrative that they're attempting to sell, the basic fact is that this is all about human dignity here, freedom from arbitrary government, freedom from invasive security apparatuses and services..." he said in the video.</p><p>In 2004, King Abdullah II dismissed Prince Hamza as heir, opting for his eldest son, Hussein, and consolidating his power.</p><p>Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Egypt and other Arab states expressed support for King Abdullah, Bloomberg reported.</p><p>The US has also vocalized support. State Department spokesman Ned Price said: "We are closely following the reports and in touch with Jordanian officials. King Abdullah is a key partner of the United States, and he has our full support."</p><p>Prince Hamza's mother, Queen Noor al Hussein, has expressed support for her son, calling the allegations "wicked slander."</p>

In it Latifa said she was fleeing physical and psychological abuse at the hands of her father. </p><p>Haigh, the lawyer for Latifa, told Business Insider that Haya's lawsuit will draw attention back onto the human rights abuses in the United Arab Emirates (UAE.)</p><p>"It's good news for Latifa, as it's thrown what happened to her into a court which isn't corrupt," he said. <ul class="summary-list"><li>The film Amira depicts the life of a Palestinian girl conceived with sperm smuggled from an Israeli prison.</li><li>'Sperm smuggling' has helped to birth almost 100 children, fathered by Palestinian prisoners.</li></ul><p>Fury has erupted over the release of a film depicting the life of a 17-year-old Palestinian girl who was conceived with sperm smuggled from an Israeli prison.</p><p>Amira, the protagonist of the film and the titular character, was raised to believe her father — who she idolized — was a Palestinian wrongly convicted by <keyword id="6355882" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="israel" source="Orion">Israel</keyword>, it is then revealed that the sperm that conceived her was swapped for an Israeli prison guard. </p><p>The film has received criticism for making light of the very real issue of 'sperm smuggling,' which has helped birth almost 100 children in the last ten years, fathered by Palestinian prisoners incarcerated by Israel, <a href="https://www.cnn.com/2021/12/09/middleeast/amira-film-jordan-palestinian-intl/index.html">according to CNN. </a></p><p>CNN reports that The Palestinian Authority Ministry of Culture said the film "abused the dignity of prisoners, their heroism and their great struggle," with Hamas adding that they believe it is "offensive."</p><p>According to <a href="https://www.jpost.com/middle-east/palestinians-outraged-by-sperm-smuggling-drama-film-688186">the Jerusalem Post</a>, the Palestinian Culture Minister said that "The film clearly harms an important issue for our people, strikes our national and struggle narrative and unequivocally offends the history and struggles of the Palestinian prisoners."</p><p>The film is a co-production involving Jordanian, Palestinian, and Egyptian partners.  It premiered at the Venice Biennale in September where it won two awards, reported CNN.</p><p>The Royal Film Commission of Jordan was set to nominate the film as its entry for the 94th Academy Awards in the <keyword id="6356001" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="international" source="Orion">international</keyword> feature film category but has pulled the film after the backlash, which included protests in Jordan.</p><p>In a statement announcing this move, the commission defended the film's artistic integrity.</p><p>"Its message doesn't harm in any way the Palestinian cause nor that of the prisoners; on the contrary, it highlights their plight, their resilience as well as their willingness to live a decent life in spite of the Occupation."</p><p>"However, in light of the recent huge controversy that the film has triggered and the perception by some that it is detrimental to the Palestinian cause and out of respect to the feelings of the prisoners and their families, the Royal Film Commission has taken the decision not to have "AMIRA" representing Jordan for the Academy Awards 2022."</p><p>There are 4,650 Palestinians held as political prisoners by the Israeli government, including 160 children, according to the prisoner support charity <a href="https://www.addameer.org/statistics/2021/11">Addameer</a></p>

She entrusted the tape to her lawyer, </span><span>who was instructed</span> to release it if her escape attempt went wrong,</p><p>Radha Stirling, the CEO of Detained in Dubai, an advocacy group campaigning for Princess Latifa's cause, <a href="http://www.mynewsdesk.com/uk/stirling-och-partners/pressreleases/radha-stirling-statement-on-asylum-bid-of-princess-haya-2892873">said in a statement on Monday</a>:</p><p>"Princess Haya has every reason to fear the consequences if she were to be sent back to Dubai. <p><div class="KonaFilter image-container float_right"><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div>Jordan is responding swiftly to ISIS's claim that <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/isis-says-it-executed-a-captured-jordanian-pilot-by-burning-him-alive-2015-2">it has killed Moaz al-Kasasbe</a>, a Jordanian pilot the group had been holding hostage.</p>
<p>Sky News Arabia  and AFP are <a href="https://twitter.com/sheeraf/status/562670855747297281">reporting</a> that the kingdom plans to execute prisoners including Sajida Rishawi, a would-be suicide bomber arrested in 2005 in connection with Al Qaeda in Iraq's attack on hotels in Amman that year which killed 60 people. </p>
<p>While the news has not been confirmed, Randa Habib, a former Amman-based AFP journalist deeply sourced inside the Jordanian government, <a href="https://twitter.com/RandaHabib/status/562672470936006656">tweeted</a> that Rishawi and Ziad Karbouli, a <a href="http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/news?pid=newsarchive&amp;sid=a9hiv13FAY54">former top aide</a> to Jordanian-born Al Qaeda in Iraq leader Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, "may be executed today." Habib added that her sources indicated that a number of jihadist suspects had been <a href="https://twitter.com/RandaHabib/status/562669908375633921">transferred between prisons</a>, possibly in preparation for their execution.</p>
<p>Whether the prisoners are executed or not, Jordanian <keyword id="6354810" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="Defense">defense</keyword> officials are promising retribution. According to Habib, <a href="https://twitter.com/RandaHabib/status/562673613535707136">an army spokesperson promised</a> that Jordan's response will "be at the level of disaster." Conflict News reported that an army spokesperson <a href="https://twitter.com/rConflictNews/status/562673424896913410">said</a> that the country's "revenge will be of the size of the anger of the Jordanian people," which is apparently considerable: Habib is <a href="https://twitter.com/RandaHabib/status/562665176189894658">reporting a general mood</a> of "anger, disgust" and "calls for revenge."</p>
<p>It's natural that the Jordanian monarchy would want to channel outrage over Kasasbe's death into more assertive anti-ISIS policies. According to the Soufan Group, <a href="http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/worldviews/wp/2015/01/27/map-how-the-flow-of-foreign-fighters-to-iraq-and-syria-has-surged-since-october/">nearly 2,100 Jordanians</a> have traveled to Syria to join the Islamic State. Jordan shares borders with both countries and <a href="http://www.unhcr.org/pages/49e486566.html">hosts over 747,000 refugees</a> from the conflict in Syria.</p>
<p>The country has remained remarkably stable in spite of having deep national fissures of its own, with a royal family identified with the country's Bedouin minority ruling over a majority-Palestinian population.</p>
<p>But Jordan's options may be limited. The country had <a href="http://www.npr.org/2014/12/30/374033077/jordan-stops-bombing-isis-after-jet-goes-down-in-syria">grounded its pilots</a> after Kasasbe's capture and was thought to <a href="http://www.cnn.com/2014/09/14/world/meast/isis-coalition-nations/">mostly play an intelligence-gathering role</a> when it joined Operation Inherent Resolve.</p>
<p>With public opinion inside the kingdom <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/david-schenker-jordan-is-facing-a-major-backlash-2014-12">split over cooperation in the anti-ISIS coalition</a> and the kingdom beset with internal concerns, executing terrorism-related prisoners may be the monarchy's most expedient way of sating popular anger and getting back at the group while also papering over its lack of other options for the time being.</p>
