<ul class="summary-list"><li>In an interview with Insider, <keyword id="128682" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Netflix">Netflix</keyword> showrunner <keyword id="10153163" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="jonathan-entwistle">Jonathan Entwistle</keyword> revealed more about why "<keyword id="10153164" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="i-am-not-okay-with-this">I Am Not Okay With This</keyword>" was canceled earlier this year.</li><li>Even before season one premiered, Entwistle and the creative team had planned out a second season as the series' ending.</li><li>But then COVID-19 impacted production costs, which led to the streamer pulling the plug.</li><li>After "I Am Not Okay With This" was canceled, Entwistle said he asked Netflix if he could go back and recut the first season finale's cliffhanger ending, but the request was denied.</li></ul><p>When "I Am Not Okay With This" was canceled earlier this year, one of more than a dozen Netflix original <keyword id="6355065" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="TV">TV</keyword> shows that were canned in 2020, fans were...not okay.</p><p>Jonathan Entwistle, the showrunner and cocreator of the coming-of-age drama about a 17-year-old girl with superpowers, <a href="https://www.insider.com/jonathan-entwistle-netflix-cancellations-one-season-2020-10">recently spoke with Insider about the shifting landscape at Netflix</a>. During that conversation, he also shed light on why he believes his show was canceled even though his team had already written and planned a second season.</p><p>After the first season of "I Am Not Okay With This" premiered on February 26, Entwistle said the show's viewership was strong "on day one." It then dwindled, which is typical for a show on a streamer.</p><p>"We just continued on the same path and it wasn't super easy," Entwistle said. "But we were aware early on, pre-pandemic, that there were rumblings of new changes of direction."</p><p>Entwistle, who also cocreated "The End of the Fxxxing World," also spoke about why he wanted to recut the first season finale following the show's cancellation, but why that ultimately never came to fruition. </p><h2>'I Am Not Okay With This' had a second and final season written and ready to film at the beginning of summer</h2><div type="image" title="I Am Not Okay With This Netflix " height="1079" width="1439" msid="78901670" hostid="261"></div><p>The month before "I Am Not Okay With This" premiered on Netflix, Entwistle and his cocreator Christy Hall had already began writing season two of the show. </p><p>"Many of the questions that we posed in the first season were mapped out for a second season," Entwistle said. "When they commissioned season two and they greenlit us into the writers room, they told us it was to be the final season. So we were writing to a finale that we'd already planned."</p><p>Entwistle said there were "many unknowns" that had an affect on the writers room, even before COVID-19 began spreading in the US. </p><p>"There was obviously the impending writers' strike, which was definitely a huge thing at Netflix," Entwistle said. "We were working almost week to week, not knowing how long it was going to last before somebody pulled the trigger on something that would have an effect [on us]."</p><p>Then March came along and with it the closure of many offices and public spaces due to the rising case numbers of COVID-19.</p><p>"When the pandemic hit, we moved out of the office and there was definitely a shift within Netflix," Entwistle said. "We finished the scripts and it was hard work in the Zoom-writer's-room. No writer tells you those things are good. It's not good."</p><h2>Once the scripts were done, the team headed into preproduction — but then the realities of filming during the pandemic sunk in</h2><div type="image" title="Sophia Lillis, Wyatt Oleff, Jonathan Entwistle, Richard Ellis, and Sofia Bryant attends the premiere of Netflix's &quot;I AM NOT OKAY WITH THIS&quot; Getty Images" height="1305" width="1740" msid="78901671" hostid="261"></div>"We were budgeting, we were ready to roll," Entwistle said. "The show was due to start shooting in May/June and obviously it got delayed. We just realized that to COVID-proof the show was going to cost a lot more money."<p>"I think I've seen a few people talking and the figures are about right: It's about anywhere between $5 to $10 million per season of television for the PPE, and for the testing, and for the systematic changes with which to make it safer," he explained. </p><p>Entwistle said he thinks the cancellation choice came down to Netflix weighing the cost of the show versus the perceived "value." </p><p>"Not necessarily number of viewers, because it's more complex than that with Netflix," Entwistle said. "We had amazing viewing figures for a show of that size. If you put that [show] on Hulu, it would be mind blowing, but on Netflix it wasn't that impressive." </p><p>"I think that one of the problems we faced with 'I Am Not Okay With This' is that in many ways I considered it to be a smaller, niche show and they considered it to be a replacement for 'Stranger Things,'" Entwistle said. "I do think when they were looking at all the finances, the show was more expensive than they figured it was worth doing."</p><div type="image" title="I Am Not Okay With This Netflix series 7" height="1079" width="1439" msid="78901672" hostid="261"></div>When asked if anyone had raised the possibility of delaying production instead of canceling the show, Entwistle said they did, noting they thought to hold off on shooting until February 2021.<p>"Once you go over a certain period of time from when you said you were going to shoot, it incurs quite big costs to pay the actors to keep them," the showrunner explained. "Netflix was basically saying we're paying large groups of filmmakers and actors to remain doing nothing."</p><p>And it wasn't only the actors. Entwistle and others on the production side as well would have to be paid.</p><p>"We were locked into 'I Am Not Okay With This' and it looked like it was never going to shoot," Entwistle said. "And because I don't have an overall deal or anything at Netflix, it was prohibiting me from working on other projects through COVID."</p><p>The show was officially canceled on August 21.</p><h2>After the show was canceled, Entwistle wanted to recut the season one finale to make it less of a cliffhanger, but Netflix wouldn't let him</h2><div type="image" title="Sophia Lillis Syd I Am Not Okay With This Netflix" height="1079" width="1438" msid="78901673" hostid="261"></div>"We were shocked when it happened, because I was like, 'What a weird show to cancel,'" Entwistle said, referring to season one's cliffhanger ending.<p>The show's first season tells the building story of Syd Novak (played by Sophia Lillis) discovering that she has superpowers. By the finale, Syd has uncovered some clues about her late father's past, all of which indicate that he might have struggled with the same superpowers. </p><p>A mysterious shadowy figure, who was following Syd throughout the first season, appears once again in the season finale. And when Syd asks, "Who are you? Should I be afraid," the man replies: "They should be afraid. Let's begin."</p><p>"We needed a hook to go into season two," Entwistle said of the finale. "That was something that had been, you know, not <em>forced</em> upon us in the writing, but definitely something we were made very acutely aware of. Me and Christy [Hall] wrote that scene pretty much on location in Pittsburgh."</p><div type="image" title="Mystery figure and Syd I Am Not Okay With This Netflix" height="1074" width="1432" msid="78901675" hostid="261"></div><p>Entwistle said that in the comic book, Syd kills herself "and we didn't want it to end like that in the show." He added, "And in fact, when the show was canceled, I went back to Netflix and said, 'Hey, can you let me recut the last two shots so that there's no dialogue and it just looks like a man appears to her? ... but they wouldn't let me.'"</p><p>Somewhat ironically, Entwistle's other Netflix series, "The End of the Fxxxing World," would have made a perfect single-season show. But Netflix greenlit that show for season two and it was filmed last year. </p><p>"Don't get me started on why we should have just ended it there," Entwistle said. "I fought very hard to end it there."</p><p>"For 'The End of the Fxxxing World' I was like, 'We don't need to make another one,'" the writer continued. "I think [it] would have been amazing to have just left it as this legendary thing that existed, like 'Freaks and Geeks. Just that one season of like, 'What the f---? That's so cool.'"</p><h2>Entwistle ultimately feels the most sad for the fans who flocked to 'I Am Not Okay With This'</h2><div type="image" title="James Alyssa The End of the Fxxing World Netflix TV show " height="1125" width="1500" msid="78901676" hostid="261"></div>"I think it's always disappointing to see such a whipped up fan base for a show that then gets very quickly canceled and nothing ever gets posted on the Instagram page ever again," Entwistle said. "The show still exists on Netflix, but it just slowly buries itself on Netflix instead of it keeping a life."<p>Entwistle saw the power of fandoms with "The End of the Fxxing World," and how that same fandom was engaging with "I Am Not Okay With This," since the two shows take place in a loosely shared universe.</p><p>Netflix also paired Entwistle with "Stranger Things" director and producer Shawn Levy, making it a key part of the marketing push for "I Am Not Okay With This." </p><p>"The [fans] all came, but I feel sad because they've been abandoned," Entwistle said.</p><p>"I get so many DMs all the time," he added that fans have been "really positive." 'I Am Not Okay With This' cocreator explains why Netflix canceled the show even though it was supposed to run for 2 seasons

"They're not interested in highlighting new voices in the television space."</li></ul><p>I published an op-ed last week about <a href="https://www.insider.com/netflix-tv-shows-cancelled-ending-2020-9" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Netflix's growing TV-show problem</a>, highlighting the recently rampant cancellation of promising original series. I knew I wasn't alone in thinking that the streaming giant's strategy was having a negative effect on fandoms, but nonetheless was intrigued to see some showrunners and TV writers openly agreeing with the piece.</p><p>Jonathan Entwistle, the director and showrunner of two Netflix original series ("The End of the Fxxxing World" and the recently canceled "I Am Not Okay With This") <a href="https://twitter.com/jonaent/status/1314954073959882752" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">responded to the article on Twitter</a>, writing in part: "This is exactly how it feels to me as a filmmaker." I decided to reach out to him to hear more about what his experience has been like from a TV show creator's point-of-view.</p><p>What follows is a condensed version of our nearly 45-minute conversation, in which Entwistle explained that he and other creators have noticed a distinct tonal shift at Netflix over the past couple of years. He also broke down what happened with the recent cancellation of "I Am Not Okay With This" after just one season.</p><p>"There's a real frustration at the moment in the business," Entwistle said during a phone call from his home in Los Angeles. "From a creative point of view, you've already nailed it in that piece. That is how people feel. That is definitely how I felt when I read that — like, 'Oh, finally it's in reality now. I'm grateful to hear your perspective. I want to make sure that I'm fairly understanding what's going on at Netflix and what the processes are like.</strong></p><p><strong>Jonathan Entwistle:</strong> From my point of view, this is definitely something that has been noted by pretty much all the filmmakers I work with — those that have left Netflix and those who are still there. It's definitely something that runs all the way down, from agency-level through managers. I've been talking about it with other showrunners for quite a long time, and what I saw in your article was like, "Oh yes. Now people outside of the system are starting to notice."</p><p><strong>What happened with <a href="https://www.insider.com/every-netflix-original-tv-show-canceled-list" target="_blank" rel="noopener">"I Am Not Okay With This" and that specific cancellation</a> this year?</strong></p><p>We actually opened the second season writer's room before we delivered season one to Netflix — say maybe [around] January. [Season one] came out at the end of February and then we just continued on the same path. We were aware early on, pre-pandemic, that there were rumblings of new changes of direction [at Netflix]. A few other filmmakers and I certainly noted that shows were being picked up that all seemed to match in style and tone and they were different to what I was making.</p><p>We started to realize that the fandom is very easily put into action when it suits Netflix to sell a show, and then immediately [when] the algorithm tells them the show is not worth pursuing by their calculations, they never post again. So it's like a Pavlov's dog thing. They feed, feed, feed, feed you stuff on Instagram and Twitter, and then they just take it away from you and they never respond again. It's like a harsh master-servant thing.</p><p>When the pandemic hit we moved out of the office and there was definitely a shift within Netflix. We finished the scripts. If you put ["I Am Not Okay With This"] on Hulu it would be mind blowing, but on Netflix it wasn't that impressive.</p><div type="image" title="I Am Not Okay With This Netflix " height="1079" width="1439" msid="78810711" hostid="261"></div><p><strong>Does Netflix tell you exact viewing numbers internally?</strong></p><p>They do — individually, show to show. I can never get any comparisons other than my own show. So I can only ever see "The End of the Fxxxing World" and "I Am Not Okay With This" as comparisons.</p><p>I know "The End of the Fxxxing World" was super successful in the first 30 days. In that first year when it was released in 2018, it had these amazing numbers within the first 30 days. It was beating "GLOW." It was beating all these shows. And that was to do with the dynamic of how nobody watched it at the beginning, and then it caught fire going into the following months.</p><p>Whereas "I Am Not Okay With This"' was the other way around: All the fans watched it on day one, and then it slowly dwindled. So we had similar viewing figures, but one was a success and one was a failure because of the dynamic of the viewing. There's no answer to it. </p><p>And it wasn't a particularly expensive show to produce. It was maybe about $15 million total, like making an expensive indie movie.</p><div type="image" title="i am not okay with this netflix" height="720" width="960" msid="78810715" hostid="261"></div><p><strong>Right, I think $15 million is less than what [HBO] wound up spending all in on the 'Game of Thrones' pilot episode.</strong></p><p>Right ... We made three and a half hours with that money. We had good cast members, and Netflix very much wanted Sophia Lillis to be in the show. And I think when the pressures of COVID came, we had quite a cast that was, should I say, <em>valuable</em> for them on social media and things like that. [Netflix had] paid for that up front, and I do think that when they were looking at all the finances, ["I Am Not Okay With This"] was more expensive than they figured it was worth. </p><p>In my parting conversations with the executives, I did say to them, "I feel like I've managed to make two shows that are distinctive." I got a platform to make two small shows from comic books, and was given carte blanche both times to produce whatever I wanted. I didn't make anything too wacky and I played ball with them, and I just hope that they're going to give other filmmakers the opportunity to make small independent television shows moving forwards because we know money is hard.</p><p><strong>Did anyone raise the prospect of just waiting and delaying production to see if maybe in a year and a half you could get back to filming, without the added COVID-19-related expenses?</strong></p><p>Yeah, we did. There was a [proposed] plan to hold off until February, but I think in the financials, there's lots of things to do with the actors options and keeping them available. Once you go over a certain period of time from when you said you were going to shoot, it incurs quite big costs to pay the actors to keep them. Netflix was basically saying we're paying large groups of filmmakers and actors to remain doing nothing.</p><p>We were shocked when it happened, because I was like, "What a weird show to cancel."</p><p>So I don't know if in any way [the cancellation] was a creative decision. I think it was COVID mixed with the reshuffling of executives at Netflix. A few of the higher up executives that were champions of "I Am Not Okay With This" and a couple of the other shows have since moved on, as have their shows.</p><div type="image" title="I Am Not Okay With This Netflix series 7" height="1079" width="1439" msid="78810717" hostid="261"></div><p><strong>From the fandom standpoint, part of what my piece was trying to get to was how there's an emotional cost to these cancellations. It might not be a financial cost to Netflix yet, because for all we can see it's not like people were mass canceling their Netflix subscriptions. But I think it's a longer term effect of how people aren't going to feel as emotionally invested when logging into Netflix and seeing 20 new original shows that month that they might have to pick through.</strong></p><p>It's interesting because I am now running the new "Power Rangers" reboot universe from scratch. So right now I'm mapping out a whole new world of movies and television and animation. I'm very acutely aware of the fandom versus delivering what people expect, while still doing something cool and new, but without reinventing the wheels. So these conversations are definitely fascinating from the sense of building fandoms and then destroying them as it pleases.</p><p>And they all look the same, right? [...] There's a tonal and aesthetic shift. It's very clear to me now, in the latter days of doing shows at Netflix, that they are a brand — you generate content that sells their brand. They're not interested in highlighting new voices in the television space. They're not interested in showcasing filmmaking intrigue. They're not excited about new ways of doing television and episodic. They're very interested in: "How can we spread the word of the brand globally?"</p><p>One of the key metrics you get is how well your show performs in different countries. If it underperforms in countries that [they] are looking to expand in, that will not help you get a renewal.</p><div type="image" title="end of the fucking world" height="866" width="1154" msid="78810719" hostid="261"></div><p><strong>And you're saying that that has changed because it used to be attractive to creators for that exact reason — that you could experiment more?</strong></p><p>You can experiment for one season. That is still there. </p><p>I think there is a lot of flux happening and I think Netflix is going into a new phase of what it is as a company. Not what it is as a studio, but what it is as a company. And I think that's never, ever going to generate quality storytelling when you are considering [things] as a company rather than as a place to distribute television.</p><p>There seems to be this strange world where nobody quite knows where they stand with the shows at Netflix, and it's the same befuddlement where people are like, "Oh, why did they cancel that? And why is that one not canceled?" Nobody knows the answer because it's so secretive.</p><p>There's a disconnect between quality of show and viability for Netflix. I've been told on multiple occasions at Netflix that a show could be critically acclaimed and win an Emmy, but it might not work for Netflix. That sort of makes sense, but it's not super exciting for a filmmaker.</p><p>It's like, "What's the end game for stacking the deck with mediocrity?" Former Netflix showrunner admits 'there's a real frustration' over cancellations and reflects on behind-the-scenes shifts at the streamer

<ul class="summary-list"><li>In January, the actors in <keyword id="128682" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Netflix">Netflix</keyword>'s "<keyword id="4859798" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="mindhunter">Mindhunter</keyword>" were released from their contracts, signaling a long delay before a third season of the show would be made.</li><li>Now coshowrunner David Fincher admits that a third season is very unlikely to happen. </li><li>"Listen, for the viewership that it had, it was a very expensive show," Fincher said <a href="https://www.vulture.com/2020/10/mindhunter-season-three-not-happening.html">in an interview with Vulture</a>. "And on some level, you have to be realistic — dollars have to equal eyeballs."</li><li>The show wasn't officially canceled by Netflix, but fans shouldn't expect season three. </li></ul><p>At the start of this year, Netflix's original drama series "Mindhunter" was put on an indefinite hold, and now its future looks even more bleak. There are no current plans to make a third season thanks a combination of low viewership, expensive production costs, and the strenuous work the show requires.</p><p>In January 2020, <a href="https://tvline.com/2020/01/15/mindhunter-season-3-netflix-cancelled-renewed/">TVLine reported</a> that the show's executive producer and coshowrunner David Fincher was working on other projects. This led to the company's decision to release the "Mindhunter" actors from their contracts, though the show wasn't formally canceled.</p><p>"David is focused on directing his first Netflix film 'Mank' and on producing the second season of 'Love, Death and Robots,'" a Netflix representative said in a statement. "He may revisit 'Mindhunter' again in the future, but in the meantime felt it wasn't fair to the actors to hold them from seeking other work while he was exploring new work of his own."</p><p>But now, ahead of the premiere of Fincher's movie "Mank," the director says a third season of "Mindhunter" is a very distant possibility. Speaking with Vulture, <a href="https://www.vulture.com/2020/10/mindhunter-season-three-not-happening.html">Fincher said making the second season was a huge challenge</a>. </p><p>"When I got done, I was pretty exhausted, and I said, 'I don't know if I have it in me right now to break season three,'" Fincher said.</p><div type="image" title="Mindhunter netflix" height="2001" width="2668" msid="78849533" hostid="261"></div><p>Netflix doesn't release full viewing numbers to the public. But, as former Netflix showrunner <a href="https://www.insider.com/jonathan-entwistle-netflix-cancellations-one-season-2020-10">Jonathan Entwistle told Insider</a>, the company will disclose viewership data to individual show creators for their own series. </p><p>Fincher told Vulture that the viewership for "Mindhunter" didn't seem high enough to justify the cost for the show.  </p><p>"Listen, for the viewership that it had, it was a very expensive show," Fincher said. "We talked about, 'Finish "Mank" and then see how you feel,' but I honestly don't think we're going to be able to do it for less than I did season two. And on some level, you have to be realistic — dollars have to equal eyeballs."</p><p>Fincher's comments about the relationship between cost and viewership will be familiar to anyone closely following Netflix's recent <keyword id="6355065" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="TV">TV</keyword> show cancellations. </p><p>"The biggest thing that we look at is, are we getting enough viewership to justify the cost of the series?" former vice president of Netflix originals, Cindy Holland, said during a Television Critics Association event in 2018.</p><div type="image" title="Ed Kemper serial killer Mindhunter TV show netflix" height="751" width="1001" msid="78849535" hostid="261"></div><p>"We also look at other things: how beloved the fan community is, how social a title is," Holland continued, <a href="https://www.ign.com/articles/2018/08/01/how-does-netflix-decide-what-to-cancel-and-what-to-renew-its-complicated">as reported by IGN</a>. "There are lots of other things that we look at that you all can also see out in the world. But we are deliberate and thoughtful, and there are a lot of things that go into the decision."</p><p>So does all this mean "Mindhunter" will never return to Netflix? <p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"><img src="https://static-ssl.businessinsider.com/image/57a462f1dd089551028b4588-1000/teotfw.cover.jpg" alt="" data-mce-source="Charles Forsman" data-mce-caption="&amp;quotThe End of the Fucking World&quot; cover."><p class="source"><span>Charles Forsman</span></p><p class="caption">"The End of the F-----g World" cover.</p></img></div><p></p></div></div>British broadcaster Channel 4 is adapting cult graphic novel "The End of the F-----g&#xa0;World" and a source has told Business Insider that Netflix is interested in coming on board.<p>Channel 4 is planning to commission the adaptation of Charles Forsman's dark coming of age story for its youth TV channel, E4, and is in the early stages of identifying a co-production partner to help fund the series.</p><p>One TV industry source said Netflix is sweet on the idea and could provide finance in return for securing rights to the adaptation outside of the <keyword id="6354868" type="COUNTRY" weightage="60" keywordseo="UK">UK</keyword>, including in the US. Conversations are at a very early stage, however.</p><p>Channel 4 and Netflix declined to comment.</p><p>The two companies have got form in working together. <a href="http://www.channel4.com/info/press/news/kiss-me-first-from-creator-of-skins-to-premiere-on-e4-netflix" target="_blank">Netflix is co-producing "Kiss Me First" with the British broadcaster</a> - a thriller based on Lottie Moggach's "The Matrix"-inspired novel of the same name.</p><p>"The End of the F-----g&#xa0;World" is set to go into production next year and will be produced by Clerkenwell Films, the production company behind <a href="http://www.ew.com/article/2013/11/20/misfits-best-hulu-show" target="_blank">E4 and Hulu hit "Misfits."</a></p><p>Charlie Covell, who penned 2015 British film "Burn, Burn, Burn", wrote the pilot for E4's "The End of the F-----g&#xa0;World" adaptation.</p><p>British director Jonathan Entwistle has also been involved in project after making a short film based on the novel in 2013. The film was commissioned by Film 4, Channel 4's movie division, which has developed and financed projects including Oscar-winning "12 Years a Slave."</p><p>Published between 2011 and 2013, "The End of the F-----g&#xa0;World" tells the story of two teenagers struggling to come to terms with their transition to adulthood.
