A lot of <keyword id="6363803" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="easter" source="Orion">Easter</keyword> traditions - including hot cross buns and lamb on Sunday - stem from medieval <keyword id="6370006" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="christian" source="Orion">Christian</keyword> or even earlier pagan beliefs. The chocolate <keyword id="236882" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="easter-egg" source="Orion">Easter egg</keyword>, however, is a more modern twist on tradition. <br /><br />Chicken eggs have been eaten at Easter for centuries. Eggs have long symbolised rebirth and renewal, making them perfect to commemorate the story of Jesus' resurrection as well as the arrival of spring. <br /><br />Although nowadays eggs can be eaten during the fasting period of Lent, in the middle ages they were prohibited along with meat and dairy. Medieval chefs often found surprising ways around this, even making mock eggs to replace them. <br /><br />For Easter - a period of celebration - eggs and meat, such as lamb (also a symbol of renewal), were back on the table. <br /><br />Even once eggs were permitted in fasting meals, they kept a special place in the Easter feast. Seventeenth-century cookbook author <keyword id="17030366" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="john-murrell" source="Orion">John Murrell</keyword> recommended "egges with greene sawce", a sort of pesto made with sorrel leaves. <br /><br />Across Europe, eggs were also given as a tithe (a sort of yearly rent) to the local church on Good Friday. This might be where the idea of giving eggs as a gift comes from. The practice died out in many Protestant areas after the Reformation, but some English villages kept the tradition going until the 19th century. <br /><br />It's not known exactly when people started to decorate their eggs, but research has pointed to the 13th century, when King Edward I gave his courtiers eggs wrapped in gold leaf. <br /><br />A few centuries later, we know that people across Europe were dying their eggs different colours. They usually chose yellow, using onion peel, or red, using madder roots or beetroots. The red eggs are thought to symbolise the blood of Christ. One 17th-century author suggested this practice went as far back as early Christians in Mesopotamia, but it's hard to know for sure. <br /><br />In England, the most popular way of decorating was with petals, which made colourful imprints. The Wordsworth Museum in the Lake District still has a collection of eggs made for the poet's children from the 1870s. <br /><br />From dyed eggs to chocolate eggs <br /><br />Although dyeing patterned eggs is still a common Easter activity, these days eggs are more commonly associated with chocolate. But when did this shift happen? <br /><br />When chocolate arrived in Britain in the 17th century, it was an exciting and very expensive novelty. In 1669, the Earl of Sandwich paid £227 - the equivalent of around £32,000 today - for a chocolate recipe from King Charles II. <br /><br />Today chocolate is thought of as a solid food, but then it was only ever a drink and was usually spiced with chilli pepper following Aztec and Maya traditions. For the English, this exotic new drink was like nothing they'd ever encountered. One author called it the "American Nectar": a drink for the gods. <br /><br />Chocolate was soon a fashionable drink for the aristocracy, often given as a gift thanks to its high status, a tradition still followed today. It was also enjoyed in the newly opened coffee houses around London. Coffee and tea had also only just been introduced to England, and all three drinks were rapidly changing how Britons socially interacted with each other. <br /><br />Catholic theologians did connect chocolate with Easter in this time, but out of concern that drinking chocolate would go against fasting practices during Lent. After heated debate, it was agreed that chocolate made with water might be acceptable during fasts. At Easter at least - a time of feasting and celebration - chocolate was fine. <br /><br />Chocolate remained expensive into the 19th century, when Fry's (now part of Cadbury) made the first solid chocolate bars in 1847, revolutionising the chocolate trade. <br /><br />For the Victorians, chocolate was much more accessible but still something of an indulgence. Thirty years later, in 1873, Fry's developed the first chocolate Easter egg as a luxury treat, merging the two gift-giving traditions. <br /><br />Even in the early 20th century, these chocolate eggs were seen as a special present, and many people never even ate theirs. A woman in Wales kept an egg from 1951 for 70 years and a museum in Torquay recently bought an egg that had been saved since 1924. <br /><br />It was only in the 1960s and 1970s that supermarkets began to offer chocolate eggs at a cheaper price, hoping to profit off the Easter tradition. <br /><br />With rising concerns over long-term chocolate production and bird flu provoked egg shortages, future Easters might look a little different. But if there is one thing that <keyword id="133868" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="easter-eggs" source="Orion">Easter eggs</keyword> can show us, it's the adaptability of tradition.

How Easter eggs evolved from chicken to chocolate

<p><strong><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div></strong></p><ul><li><strong>The Rotten Tomatoes critic and audience scores for "Gotti" are drastically different - the film has a 0% critic score but a 71% audience score.</strong></li><li><strong>Many of the user accounts that positively reviewed the film were created this month and have only reviewed "Gotti," leading to suspicions that the audience score could be manufactured.</strong></li><li><strong>The film also has almost as many user ratings as "Incredibles 2," which is hard to believe considering the two films' box office performances over the weekend.</strong></li><li><strong>The marketing strategy for the movie is now calling out critics and saying that audiences "love" the movie.</strong></li></ul><p>&#xa0;</p><p>The new John Travolta film "Gotti," which movie-theater subscription service MoviePass invested in, may have <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/john-travolta-moviepass-mob-movie-gotti-zero-rating-on-rotten-tomatoes-2018-6" target="_blank" rel="noopener">a 0% critic score</a> on Rotten Tomatoes, but audiences seem to "love" it - at least according to the film's Rotten Tomatoes audience score and a new marketing strategy for the movie.&#xa0;</p><p>But it appears those latter two things could be connected in a devious way.</p><p>"Gotti" currently has a 71% <a href="https://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/gotti_2018/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Rotten Tomatoes</a> audience score as of Tuesday afternoon. It's not uncommon for audiences to enjoy a movie more than critics, but it comes as a surprise for the two scores to be so drastically different, especially considering the film's low box-office performance over the weekend (it took in $1.67 million).</p><p>Screen Junkies film critic Dan Murrell first pointed out some inconsistencies on Twitter.</p><p>What makes the audience score so suspicious is that it's based on nearly 7,000 user ratings. By comparison, "Incredibles 2" has just over 7,600 user ratings. It's hard to believe the two movies would have almost the same amount of user ratings since many more people saw "Incredibles 2" (the movie made a record-breaking <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/incredibles-2-biggest-opening-weekend-animated-movie-ever-2018-6" target="_blank" rel="noopener">$180 million over the weekend</a>).&#xa0;</p><p>Furthermore, "Gotti" marketing strategy is now to go all-in on the idea that audiences like the movie and critics hate it. The movie's official Twitter <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/gotti-movie-calls-out-critics-for-its-0-score-on-rotten-tomatoes-2018-6" target="_blank" rel="noopener">called out critics</a> in a tweet Monday night, tweeting "<span>audiences loved Gotti but critics don't want you to see it… The question is why??? Trust the people and see it for yourself!"</span></p><p><span>Then, on Tuesday, MoviePass sent a notification through its app that said, "Audiences love GOTTI but critics think otherwise. Who do you trust? See it today." MoviePass invested in the movie through its MoviePass Ventures subsidiary.&#xa0;</span></p><p><span>This all leads to the suspicion that someone, perhaps the team behind "Gotti," is manufacturing the film's Rotten Tomatoes audience score. If that sounds far-fetched, consider this: most of the user accounts that have positively reviewed the movie on Rotten Tomatoes were created this month, and many of those have only reviewed one movie: "Gotti" (like <a href="https://www.rottentomatoes.com/user/id/977324293/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">this one</a>, for instance, in which the review is simply "I will use Movi Pass").</span></p><p><span> There were even a couple of accounts that had only reviewed two movies: "Gotti" and "American Animals," another (better reviewed) MoviePass-funded film.</span></p><p>A Reddit user broke down the the user accounts based on how many of them had only reviewed "Gotti" and were created this month <a href="https://old.reddit.com/r/movies/comments/8s7dle/gottis_user_reviews_on_rotten_tomatoes_were/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">in this thread</a>.</p><p>My own calculations were a bit different, but the conclusion is still the same: there's an unusual amount of accounts that were created in June and have only reviewed "Gotti." Maybe the film just has a passionate fanbase, as Murrell points out, but it's more likely that the movie has a somewhat doctored audience score.&#xa0;</p><p><span>When reached for comment, Rotten Tomatoes said, "We&#xa0;closely monitor our platforms and haven't determined there to be any problems. All of the reviews were&#xa0;left by active accounts." But while the accounts may be active, that doesn't mean they weren't created with a specific agenda in mind.</span></p><p>It's worth noting that the audience score dropped throughout the day on Tuesday, but that doesn't change the inconsistencies.&#xa0;</p><p>It wouldn't be unheard of for a movie's Rotten Tomatoes audience score to be the topic of confusion. For instance, the audience score for "Star Wars: The Last Jedi" has a 46% audience score compared to its positive 91% critic score. The positive Rotten Tomatoes audience score for 'Gotti' has raised suspicions after the movie's thrashing by critics

<p>The police are investigating a group of men on the London Underground who are allegedly handing women cards telling them that they are "fat" and "ugly." </p><p>The cards, handed out by a group calling themselves Overweight Haters Ltd, were first reported on Twitter on Monday afternoon, when Kara Florish, a 30-year-old who lives in Southend, posted a picture of the card she was given.</p><p>In it, overweight people are blamed for using up an "enormous amount of food resources" and told that they are worse than pigs, which are described as "[sic] beatiful".</p><p>Florish <a href="http://www.dailymail.co.uk/femail/article-3339679/Commuter-handed-card-Overweight-Haters-Ltd.html">said in a Facebook post</a> that she was not offended, but that the cards could cause huge offence to others. "<span>I am not upset myself," she explained. "I am smaller than the national average and not exactly obese, but this is hateful and cowardly and could potentially upset people struggling with confidence and eating disorders."</span><span><br /></span></p><p>At first it wasn't known if the cards were real, but after another Twitter user, Sean Thomas Knox, reported seeing a woman handed one of the cards while on an underground train at Oxford Circus station, before a man then jumped off the train before it departed.</p><p>British Transport Police<a href="https://twitter.com/BTP/status/671372896477028352"> said in a tweet on Monday afternoon</a> they were "aware" of the cards, and encouraged anyone given one to contact them. It hasn't been confirmed if handing out the cards, or anything on them is actually illegal.</p><p>While it seems that the cards are real, it is not known how many have actually been given out. A Twitter search shows that other than the reports from Florish and Knox, no one else has mentioned being handed a card.
