She worked in retail and wasn't earning enough on YouTube for it to be anything more than a passion project.</p><p>But then everything changed, starting when YouTube's algorithm picked up and recommended a video she posted in October 2018, titled, "Telling my best friend I like him...*PRANK*" which prompted the video to go viral and gain 4 million views. </p><p>"I posted that video, and I think it was around January when my first paycheck came," she told Business Insider. "My jaw dropped because of how much money I made off just AdSense."</p><p>She told Business Insider that the paycheck from Google was for $29,300, earned entirely off the ads placed in her videos. $23,811 of that check was from the viral prank video, according to a screenshot viewed by Business Insider.</p><p>Now Kulani has 675,000 subscribers on YouTube, multiple videos with millions of views, and is a full-time YouTuber.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image"><img src="https://static-ssl.businessinsider.com/image/5ddbe8f2fd9db26ef2793df2-1173/screen shot 2019-11-25 at 94334 am.png" border="0" alt="Alyssa Kulani" data-mce-source="Screenshot of Alyssa Kulani/YouTube" data-link="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A4ustydVIIE" /></div></div></div></p><h2>How Kulani got started on YouTube and turned a hobby into a career </h2><p>YouTube had always been a huge part of Kulani's life. When she was growing up, she'd watch YouTubers like iJustine, Joey Graceffa, and Shane Dawson, similar to how the other kids her age would watch TV, she said.</p><p>Kulani's first video was a vlog, which she uploaded to her YouTube channel when she was 13 years old, around 2012. By the time she was in high school, she had around 100,000 subscribers. </p><p>"At first I was posting videos three times a day, and then as I got older (in high school), I was posting once every few months," she said. "But it was never enough to say, 'hey, this is going to be my job.'"</p><p>Kulani never finished high school, dropping out her senior year, she said. That's when she began working in retail, and soon after, her friends on YouTube, who had channels of their own, encouraged her to take her channel more seriously because she was "missing out on a huge opportunity."</p><p>After Kulani's prank video went viral, she posted another in December 2018, titled "Dating my best friend for 24 hours..." which now has almost 4 million views and is her second-most-viewed video.</p><p>From this, she started to gain followers at a rapid pace, growing from <a href="https://socialblade.com/youtube/user/vlogalyssa/monthly">100,000 subscribers at the end of October 2018, to 400,000 subscribers by the end of January 2019</a>, she said. </p><p>For a creator, it's important to continue to upload engaging videos consistently after one goes viral to capitalize on the boost, Kulani said. </p><p>"If you miss a week, people are going to get bored and you're going to fall out of the algorithm," Kulani said. "If you're not posting consistently, especially after a video goes viral, nobody is going to pick up on your second video." </p><h2>'I still don't really understand how this was possible'</h2><p>The nearly $30,000 that January allowed Kulani the freedom to focus on YouTube full time. </p><p>"I still don't really understand how this was possible," she said.</p><p>Although rare, checks from YouTube that are that big do happen. <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-entrepreneur-made-50000-ad-revenue-from-one-youtube-video-2019-8">Kevin David, a YouTube influencer and entrepreneur, described to Business Insider how he made $50,000 in Google AdSense revenue from a single YouTube video</a>. In David's case, he had a high CPM (cost per 1,000 views) rate because advertisers were willing to pay a premium for his business-focused content. </p><p>In Kulani's case, her videos focus on subjects like pranks with her boyfriend, but her CPM rate is relatively high (between $5 and $10) because she doesn't use profanity or songs that are copyrighted. Austen Alexander, a YouTube star and active-duty sailor for the US Navy, previously told <a href="https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCm_KYd9ls02FktHoE_R_1Qg/videos?view=0&amp;sort=p&amp;flow=grid">Business Insider he had tripled his CPM rate by keeping his content free of profanity and copyrighted material.</a></p><p>In general, Kulani includes around three to four ads a video: one pre-roll ad, one mid-roll ad, and one ad that plays after the video is over. <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-to-make-money-on-youtube-video-ads-creator-guide-2019-9">Unlike some creators</a>, she doesn't extend her videos to over 10 minutes long to include more ad breaks. Kulani said she <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-to-make-money-on-youtube-video-ads-creator-guide-2019-9">optimizes her ad revenue</a> by sometimes placing an ad break before something suspenseful is about to happen.</p><p>"I don't really know how it works, but I've been lucky," Kulani said about her career on YouTube. How a 20-year-old YouTube creator earned $23,000 in ad revenue from a single video

He thinks it's big for YouTube's top talent.</p><p>YouTube TV, which was <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/youtube-tv-price-launch-date-2017-2">unveiled on Tuesday</a>, delivers around 40 TV channels to your smart TV, phone, laptop, and so on. It's the latest "skinny bundle" meant to appeal to people who want to dip their toes back into the world of pay TV, or get a premium package for the first time.</p><p>But while YouTube TV mostly tries to streamline the traditional TV package, Burns told Business Insider that it's also a big step forward for YouTube's most prominent creators.</p><p>YouTube TV will be a totally separate app from YouTube: It will include shows and movies from YouTube Red, the company's $9.99-a-month premium service, which houses YouTube-funded original content from the platform's heavyweights like AwesomenessTV, Lilly Singh, Joey Graceffa, The Fine Brothers, and so on.</p><p>That's a big deal, according to Burns, whose company Rooster Teeth has a movie "Lazer Team" on YouTube Red, with a sequel in production.</p><p>For Red, YouTube tapped its top talents and gave them the budgets to make premium shows and movies. On YouTube TV, that Red content will live alongside established channels like ESPN, even as "regular" YouTube videos live in a totally different app.</p><p>"It goes to show the quality of production," Burns said. It's a vote of confidence from YouTube. </p><p>It's also a continued blurring of the line of "what is a TV show," versus a web one, and what that denotes in terms of quality. With Netflix shelling out billions of dollars for original shows, and streaming TV packages like Sling adding digital-first channels such as Cheddar, the difference between linear and digital TV is only getting more complicated. And Burns couldn't be happier because it means more opportunities for companies like Rooster Teeth.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><img src="https://static-ssl.businessinsider.com/image/58b9d768be96739a048b4b3a-796" alt="YouTube TV app" data-mce-source="YouTube"><p class="source"><span>YouTube</span></p></img></div><p></p></div></div></p><h2><strong>The YouTube Generation</strong></h2><p>YouTube has said it is targeting young people with YouTube TV.</p><p>"This is TV reimagined for the YouTube generation," Christian Oestlien, the director of product management at YouTube, <a href="https://www.bloomberg.com/news/features/2017-02-28/youtube-bets-it-can-convince-youngs-to-pay-for-tv">told Bloomberg</a>.</p><p>While that might sound like marketing spin, Piper Jaffray's last semi-annual survey of 10,000 US teens showed a whopping 26% of teens watched YouTube every day, putting it over cable TV for the first time (at 25%).</p><p>And Burns recalled his own experience on traditional TV, on a recent season of the CBS show "The Amazing Race." He said he actually had to explain to some of Rooster Teeth's younger fans how to watch him on the show. Why the cofounder of a 250-person video company is 'overjoyed' by YouTube's new cable TV competitor

YouTube's got a new solution for that, called "YouTube Red," which takes away the annoyance of advertisements across all YouTube videos for $9.99/month.&#xa0;<p>And next year, YouTube is launching a gaggle of original shows that will add value to your monthly subscription - shows from prominent YouTube stars like Felix "PewDiePie" Kjellberg and Joey Graceffa. So it's basically like Hulu Plus or Netflix, but with <a href="https://youtu.be/z_AbfPXTKms">more videos of Maru</a>.</p><p>Unfortunately, for the hundreds&#xa0;of millions of people using iPhones and iPads, YouTube Red costs $3 more. It's what the Apple news web calls an "<a href="http://www.cultofmac.com/393517/youtubes-new-streaming-service-charges-ios-users-an-apple-tax/">Apple Tax</a>," and Google's YouTube is passing that tax along to subscribers.&#xa0;</p><p>The logic goes like this: Apple takes 30% of any revenue created by apps distributed through the App Store, so to make up for that charge, YouTube is passing it along to subscribers.</p><p>So rather than paying the same $9.99/month that everyone else is, anyone with Apple phone and tablet - again, hundreds of millions of people -will have to pay an extra $3 to make up for YouTube losing&#xa0;30% of its revenue to Apple.</p><p>Spotify does the same thing, as do many other app makers faced with Apple's cut of their profits.</p><p>You'd be hard-pressed to find that out, though. YouTube didn't mention this information in&#xa0;the <a href="https://sites.google.com/site/ytredpress/home/youtube-red-blogpost">main announcement</a>. It's only when you <a href="https://sites.google.com/site/ytredpress/faqs">steer to the FAQ page</a> that you see the fine print:</p><p>"YouTube Red is a paid membership that brings ad-free, background, and offline experiences to YouTube content for a monthly fee of $9.99. [$9.99 per month for Android, desktop, mweb / $12.99 per month (iOS)]."</p><p>We asked Google for a statement on the price discrepancy and have yet to hear back.</p><p>Interested in seeing how YouTube Red will work when it launches on October 28? YouTube's new premium service costs even more on iPhones and iPads

<p><span style="font-weight: 400;"><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"><img src="https://static-ssl.businessinsider.com/image/5627de52bd86ef775d8b89d8-1440-1080/pewdiepie-gaming.png" alt="pewdiepie gaming" data-mce-source="PewDiePie" /><p class="source"><span>PewDiePie</span></p><p class="caption">YouTube star PewDiePie</p></div><p></p></div></div>On Wednesday, </span><a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/youtube-red-ad-free-video-subscription-service-costs-999-per-month-2015-10"><span style="font-weight: 400;">YouTube announced</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;"> an ad-free subscription service that will cost $9.99 a month for desktop and Android - though Apple gets a bit of a poke with a $12.99 price tag for iOS. </span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">The service will be called "YouTube Red," and an ad-less YouTube wonderland isn't the only thing subscribers will get. </span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">They will also, "early next year," get original content from YouTube stars like PewDiePie, Joey Graceffa, Toby Turner, and MatPat.</span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Content will range from shorter videos to video series and films.</span></p><p>While YouTube Red is being described by some as a Netflix or Hulu killer, the focus of YouTube's premium content actually seems at first glance to be fundamentally different from that on existing streaming giants.</p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Let's look at one show that was explained in some detail on Wednesday, and stars PewDiePie, perhaps the most iconic star in YouTube history. PewDiePie's new series will be called "Scare PewDiePie," and YouTube is advertising the show as "a reality-adventure series from the creator and executive producers of The Walking Dead" where viewers can "experience thrills, chills and laughter as PewDiePie encounters terrifying situations inspired by his favorite video games."</span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">The emphasis on reality is important here. </span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">One of YouTube's main strengths is its "personalities," the kind of superstars who can anchor a reality TV show just by being a stylized version of themselves. And while these kinds of stars are prevalent on network television, they are all but nonexistent in Netflix's original content.</span></p><p>Netflix has comedy specials and has an <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/netflix-chelsea-handler-documentaries-series-2015-7">upcoming talk show starring comedian Chelsea Handler</a>. But reality TV is hardly its game. It's no secret that Netflix sees HBO as a role model and sparring partner, and YouTube's emphasis on personalities isn't in HBO's DNA.</p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Netflix CEO Reed Hastings has always characterized "</span><a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/netflix-ceo-internet-tv-better-2015-10"><span style="font-weight: 400;">linear TV</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;">" as his company's rival, not other streaming services like Hulu. He seems to think there is room enough in the market for different niches of video streaming services. "Tattoos and piercings doesn't make you a punk.
