O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story") and <keyword id="406" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="60" keywordseo="Movies">movies</keyword> ("Black Panther").</p><p>But for his latest project, he's moving away from helping the vision of people like Ryan Murphy and Ryan Coogler to set out and direct his own story.</p><p>"All Day and a Night" (available on Netflix) is an unforgiving look at Jahkor (Aston Sanders of "Moonlight"), an Oakland kid who is trying to make a better life for his newborn baby with his skills as a rapper but finds himself falling into a life of crime that puts him in jail alongside his gang banging father, James (Jeffrey Wright).</p><p>This a story that Cole wanted to tell long before "Black Panther" was made. A decade to be exact. And it's in many ways the first time audiences will get something that comes directly from Cole (even for his directorial debut, "Amber Lake," he admits the project was very collaborative with the actors).</p><p><div type="image" title="All Day and a Night Matt Kennedy Netflix.JPG" height="774" width="1548" msid="75510795" hostid="261"></div>"I view myself as a super collaborative person," Cole told Insider with a laugh. "Yes, this is my film, it's definitely different than what I've done. But I love collaboration. Creating something greater than you can on your own."</p><p>But for the first time in his career, he's the tone in the director's chair, which means he's the one with the final say and the vision — regardless of the amount of collaboration. And for "All Day and a Night," he set out to give an unforgiving look at what he observed growing up around the San Francisco Bay area.</p><p>"My grandmother used to say, 'Our family didn't grow up with a silver spoon in our mouths.'"</p><h2>Cole said he found inspiration for the movie from spending time with people like the ones he depicts</h2><p>The light bulb for "A Day and a Night" really came into focus when Cole was in college at the University of California, Berkeley.</p><p>"I spent a lot of time between classes and semesters with people in these same environments that are in the movie," Cole said. "I'm a square so I make no claims to having any kind of street crew, but I got to see the humanity in these people that I was interacting with."</p><p>And Cole said that's the biggest thing he wants people to take away from the journey we see Jahkor go on in the movie. To see "the people in those communities in a more humane light."</p><p>Though the comparison to a raw inner-city crime movie like "Menace II Society" is expected by Cole (and he admits he probably mentioned that movie when pitching it to Netflix), he also hopes it can stand on its own. Especially in how it depicts the characters of Jahkor and James in prison.</p><p><div type="image" title="All Day and a Night Netflix" height="640" width="1280" msid="75510798" hostid="261"></div></p><p>"My film isn't about the black community, just like a white crime film isn't about all white people," Cole said. "What Jah is grappling with is trying to understand how the systemic walls that are put around him outside of prison, in his community, are not that different than the walls he sees inside prison. It is him trying to find hope in the one place that he can control through the journey of this film which is inside himself. That's the thrust of what I'm trying to get at. There are these societal structural challenges that particularly African-Americans in these underserved communities have to face. I feel oftentimes no one speaks to the reality of the circumstance they are in."</p><p>Going forward still expect Cole to pen comic book-based projects. He's <a href="https://www.insider.com/coronavirus-is-influencing-joe-robert-cole-adaptation-of-failsafe-comic-2020-4">currently adapting</a> the Vault Comics title "Failsafe" (a project also for Netflix), with Michael B. Jordan producing. But at the same time, Cole also wants to continue to direct movies like "All Day and a Night," where the story is shedding light on someone you wouldn't expect you'd be interested in.</p><p>"What I wanted to achieve was taking the audience on a journey and humanizing someone we often struggle to see the humanity in," he said. Jordan</keyword> attached to produce and possibly star.</li><li>Cole told Insider that the coronavirus pandemic has influenced his writing of the project.</li><li><a href="https://www.insider.com/?hprecirc-bullet">Visit Insider's homepage for more stories</a>.</li></ul><p>As screenwriter Joe Robert Cole works away at the Netflix adaptation for the Vault Comics title "Failsafe," he's beginning to notice that reality has mirrored the material he's writing because of the coronavirus pandemic.</p><p>"It always was touching on some of the things we are currently dealing with, but being in this circumstance certainly has influenced my thoughts about the story," Cole told Insider while promoting his second-career directing effort, Netflix's "All Day and a Night" (available on Friday).</p><p>"Failsafe" follows John Ravena, who hunts super-soldiers that are the last of the "Insurgence Program." A decade after he thought his mission was complete, social unrest has led to the resurgence of this special breed of soldiers.</p><p>To research the "Failsafe" project, Cole said he's been talking to scientists along with diving into the source material. But as the coronavirus has continued to spread, he said all he needs to do now is look out his window for inspiration.</p><p>"You're looking at the news, looking at people hoarding supplies, looking at all the things that put stresses on the world and those filter down to people," Cole said. "For me, I've been willing to use that in the work that I'm doing."</p><p><div type="image" title="failsafe vault comics" height="1968" width="1280" msid="75476977" hostid="261"></div></p><p>Though Cole didn't go into greater detail, it's likely what he's doing with "Failsafe" will be similar to what he did with "Black Panther." In the Marvel movie, for instance, he and director Ryan Coogler explored themes like African diaspora and the absence of fathers while grounding the story by bookending it with scenes in Oakland.</p><p>The "Failsafe" comics, meanwhile, delve into the lack of accountability by the government and a society that is upended due to the emergence of a threat they don't understand — themes that easily could tie into our current pandemic reality.</p><p>Cole has been working on the project since <a href="https://deadline.com/2018/04/failsafe-michael-b-jordan-joe-robert-cole-black-panther-netflix-1202379331/">Netflix won out in an auction for the property in 2018</a>. He isn't the only comic book heavy hitter involved, either. Michael B. Jordan is attached as a producer and could star as Ravane in the movie. 'Black Panther' screenwriter says the coronavirus is influencing the comic adaptation of 'Failsafe' that he's writing for Netflix

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Warning: There are major spoilers ahead for "Black Panther: Wakanda Forever."</li><li>The sequel sees Wakanda grieve the loss of T'Challa (Chadwick Boseman).</li></ul><p>"Black Panther: Wakanda Forever" has the difficult job of <a href="https://www.insider.com/black-panther-wakanda-forever-chadwick-boseman-death-tchalla-explained-2022-11">addressing the tragic death of actor Chadwick Boseman</a>, as King T'Challa dies of a mystery illness within the opening few minutes of the movie.</p><p>The ramifications of his death reverberate throughout the entire story, as Shuri (Letitia Wright) and her loved ones grieve their late king while also clashing with <a href="https://www.insider.com/black-panther-wakanda-forever-namor-mutant-explained-2022-11">Namor (Tenoch Huerta)</a> and the nation of Talokan. </p><p>Shuri eventually learns to let herself work through her grief and embraces her role as Wakanda's new Black Panther.</p><p>But writer Joe Robert Cole recently told <a href="https://www.rollingstone.com/tv-movies/tv-movie-features/wakanda-forever-ending-explained-spoilers-easter-eggs-1234632792/">Rolling Stone</a> that the topic of T'Challa's successor was a huge point of discussion going into the film, noting that they wanted to find the character arc that would hit hardest.</p><p>The writer explained: "We would kick around the ideas, and try to extrapolate where the story goes and what's the most impactful choice — what's the best journey? And where do you go after the film in terms of those characters? M'Baku certainly was someone that got kicked around a little bit." </p><p>Cole also confirmed that Lupita Nyong'o's spy, Nakia, was in the running for Black Panther, saying: "That got kicked around! Her name got kicked around for sure." </p><p>Nakia would've been an interesting choice for Black Panther, especially with her experience as a spy, but it's clear the focus of her arc was about setting up <a href="https://www.insider.com/black-panther-wakanda-forever-mid-credits-scene-explained-2022-11">the end reveal of T'Challa's son</a>, Toussaint (Divine Love Konadu-Sun). </p><p>Cole went on to say that Shuri taking up the suit after her brother made the most sense considering her story, and it obviously works in tandem with the source material.</p><p>The writer added: "In the comics, Shuri is Black Panther and there's a natural organicness, I guess is the best way to say it, to her becoming Panther. But you kick the tires on all sorts of ideas. And you just want to make the best decision and do what's best for the story." </p>

Coogler and cowriter Joe Robert Cole drafted a new story for the "Black Panther" sequel in the wake of the lead actor's death.</p><p><a href="https://www.inverse.com/entertainment/black-panther-wakanda-forever-ryan-coogler-interview">In a new interview with Inverse</a>, Coogler said the original script would have had a "similar" tone to the final movie but would have followed the aftermath of "Avengers: Endgame." In the "Avengers" movie, T'Challa was wiped out of existence because of Thanos' snap along with half the universe. The character had thus lost five years of his life — called the Blip — when he was brought back to life at the end of the film.</p><p>"The tone was going to be similar," Coogler said. "The character was going to be grieving the loss of time, you know, coming back after being gone for five years. As a man with so much responsibility to so many, coming back after a forced five years absence, that's what the film was tackling."</p><p>He added: "He was grieving time he couldn't get back. Grief was a big part of it."</p><p>Coogler also said that <a href="https://www.insider.com/black-panther-wakanda-forever-namor-tenoch-huerta-swimming-lessons-2022-10">Namor (Tenoch Huerta) was "always the antagonist" for the sequel movie</a>, despite the story changing.</p><p>"There were other characters, for sure, that we considered including," the "Black Panther" director said. It was very therapeutic. 'Black Panther' villain Erik Killmonger is so compelling that #KillmongerWasRight was trending on Twitter

Jordan elevates the movie from good to great.</strong></li></ul><p><br>Like "Wonder Woman" last year, "Black Panther" is a project that fans have been waiting decades to see. And just like "Wonder Woman," it was worth the wait.</br></p><p>The latest superhero movie brought into Marvel's MCU may be its most meaningful yet. In a time when audiences want different stories told by (and focused on) people who rarely get the spotlight, "Black Panther" comes at the perfect time.</p><p>Director Ryan Coogler - who showed with "Creed" that he could work within the confines of an existing franchise and still give us something special - uses the tools and resources that come with Marvel Studios to build out a movie that isn't just filled with action (and sometimes has a Bond film vibe), but also brings the audience on an emotional journey about family and community.</p><p>We meet up with T'Challa (Chadwick Boseman) following the death of his father (which happened in "Captain America: Civil War") and his return to Wakanda to take his rightful place as king. Immediately, we are thrust into the beauty, technology, and heritage that is Wakanda, a nation located in Africa that Black Panther rules over, and is technologically advanced due to the use of a special material called Vibranium.</p><p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div>The fact that Wakanda is hidden has protected its people, but T'Challa knows that the tech they possess could help those outside its walls. Should he let his kingdom be more open to the outside world? It's something he ponders until he learns that Ulysses Klaue (Andy Serkis), now sporting an arm cannon since "Age of Ultron," is causing trouble with the Vibranium he possesses. When T'Challa investigates with his new and improved Black Panther suit, it's revealed that Klaue has teamed with Erik Killmonger (Michael B. Jordan), who has a shocking backstory related to T'Challa and his family that could affect everything T'Challa is trying to do.<p>Honestly, there are moments in this movie that get really deep. This is far from a Marvel movie with constant action. There's a solid story in "Black Panther" (written by Coogler and Joe Robert Cole), which might get tiresome for some audiences. But what it does is help with delving into the story arc of Killmonger, and bolsters Jordan's standout villain performance.</p><p>Jordan plays a Killmonger fueled with hate and emptiness - we won't give away why - but he also delivers it with a swagger that's just a joy to watch. The movie takes off more in story and viewing enjoyment whenever Jordan is on screen.</p><p>Perhaps the biggest strength of "Black Panther" is its character development. This is particularly true for T'Challa's sassy sister/tech wiz Shuri (Letitia Wright), and the head of his royal guard, Okoye (Danai Gurira), who are major scene-stealers.</p><p>Lupita Nyong'o, Daniel Kaluuya, Martin Freeman, Forest Whitaker, and a small (but important) role for Sterling K.
