For the uninitiated, Triton is looking to invest around $650 million to $1 billion in setting up a manufacturing facility in India. In an exclusive interview with Business Insider, the company's founder and chief executive officer (CEO), Himanshu Patel, revealed that they plan to hire roughly between 5,000 to 10,000 people over the next year (2021- 2022) and about 35,000 to 40,000 people over the next five years in India. The company has been actively recruiting and posting jobs on its LinkedIn page. The company, in a written response, said they are looking to hire graduates in the automotive industry for segments such as mechanical, IT, Artificial intelligence, and Internet of things. "They could be engineering grads, diploma holders and technical people," the company said. Triton recently posted a job opening for an entry-level position for "<a href="https://www.linkedin.com/jobs/view/2388169063/?refId=Xx1wfMMFrurRoNrFGlZyqA%3D%3D&amp;trackingId=tnespGZPix6mmrh71AYjNg%3D%3D">embedded design engineer</a>" in Mumbai. The company currently has its research and development unit set up in Pune, and it is also in talks with different state authorities to set up its facility in India. However, the CEO declined to give further details. Responding to a query on average salary, the company said it would be too early for them to comment as they are still finalising a few of the job contracts. Patel, in an interview, told Business Insider that the company has been hiring for quite a while now without revealing many details in public. He had then said the company would slowly put out job listings on its LinkedIn pages and other resources. Patel said the company has a huge fan following about 8 million users on LinkedIn, which helps them identify a lot of employment opportunities. The company has huge plans for India Triton said it had modified the models as per the need of Indian citizens adding a solar roof to feed the battery when stuck in traffic jams and promising long battery life. Patel further explained that the solar panel in their car could generate up to 1.3 kilowatts per hour, reducing the air conditioning from a 3 KW draw to a 1.3 KW draw. “This offsets the losses of mileage or kilometres in India. By just doing this, we are saving about close to 30% of the battery for being used during traffic times,” he added. The New Jersey-based electric car maker Triton also recently roped in India’s state-owned Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL) to make batteries. “Through this partnership we aim to produce an innovative ‘Make In India’ product which will transform the Indian EV and ESS segment,” Patel added. An American electric car maker is on a hiring spree in India — plans to add 10,000 jobs over the next year

This facility, which will be built over a million square feet area, can create close to 24,000 <keyword id="11018" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Jobs">jobs</keyword> in the state, Triton EV and Telangana government said. Triton EV is planning to invest about $1.5 billion in this manufacturing facility over the next five years, the company said in the statement. The first tranche -- $300 million -- will be infused in the upcoming months. Triton EV’s Chairperson and Managing Director <keyword id="192817" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Himanshu-Patel">Himanshu Patel</keyword> has claimed that they already have $2.2 billion worth of purchase orders from India. Telangana government, too, has given an order of 3000 EVs to Triton. “We are excited to know about Triton EV’s expertise and vision for the EV market… Industrial policy of the state which is proactively crafted towards fast process driven decision making and action towards bringing new investments in the state,” Kalvakuntla Taraka Rama Rao (also known as KTR), Telangana's minister for Municipal Administration &amp; Urban Development, Industries &amp; Commerce, and IT said on the occasion. The manufacturing facility will produce Triton EVs not only for the Indian market, but also for Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Nepal and the entire Middle East region. Tesla’s rival Triton to create 24,000 jobs in Telangana with new electric vehicle factory

The <keyword id="6354977" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Supreme-Court">Supreme Court</keyword> on Wednesday quashed the <keyword id="13126" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Maharashtra">Maharashtra</keyword> law granting <keyword id="6361164" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="reservation">reservation</keyword> in jobs and admissions to <keyword id="6389157" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="maratha">Maratha</keyword> community. The top court said it did not find any exceptional circumstance to justify exceeding the 50 per cent cap set by Indra Sawhney judgment. A five-judge <keyword id="69719" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Constitution-bench">Constitution Bench</keyword> headed by Justice Ashok Bhushan allowed no breach of 50 per cent ceiling to give more reservation, as it refused to consider reviewing Indra Sawhney verdict of 1992. "Exceeding ceiling limit of 50 percent laid down by Indra Sawhney is violative of <keyword id="875349" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Articles">Articles</keyword> 14 and 15," said the top court. The top court said the people from Maratha community cannot be declared as educationally and socially backward. The unanimous judgment was delivered by a bench also comprising Justices L. Nageswara Rao, S Abdul Nazeer, Hemant Gupta and S. Ravindra Bhat. The top court made it clear that there were no extraordinary circumstances to grant reservation to Maratha community over and above 50 per cent ceiling. The top court struck down the Maharashtra State Reservation for Socially and Educationally Backward Classes (SEBC) Act, 2018 which extends reservation to the Maratha community in public education and employment. The top court emphasized that exceeding the 50 percent limit in without exceptional circumstances violates Article 14, and it held that 2018 act as amended in 2019 exceeds the limit without any exceptional circumstances. The top court held that SEBC Act, which extends reservation to the Maratha community in public education and employment is unconstitutional. Supreme Court quashes the law granting reservation for Maratha community in jobs and education exceeding 50%

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Warning: There are mild spoilers for "The Little Mermaid."</li><li>Halle Bailey and Melissa McCarthy steal the show in one of Disney's better remakes.</li></ul>Don't be surprised if Halle Bailey earns an Oscar nomination for her delivery of "<a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cu-RcFv50Sc">Part of Your World</a>" in Disney's "The Little Mermaid" remake.The singer executes the iconic song masterfully in a performance so rich and so captivating that it's difficult to not feel chills when she holds onto one of the final notes for six seconds, showing off her impressive range.Her desire to explore the shore up above is palpable. From director Rob Marshall ("Mary Poppins Returns," "Into the Woods"), Disney's latest live-action remake reimagines the 1989 Oscar winner, following the youngest of King Triton's seven daughters, Ariel, who becomes infatuated with the handsome Prince Eric (Jonah Hauer-King) after saving his life, much to the dismay of her human-averse father, (played by Javier Bardem). Longing to be human, Ariel makes a hasty deal with the sea witch, Ursula (Melissa McCarthy), trading her sea legs for human ones at the price of her voice.Just like in the animated film, Ariel and Eric must share true love's kiss before the sun sets on day three to remain human — or it's back to the sea where she's at Ursula's mercy.Bailey is a perfect Ariel, building upon Jodi Benson's original performance, making the character stronger, bolder, and a bit wiser than the original's lovesick protagonist who was caught up in pursuing a kiss simply to break a spell. The actor's delivery will silence naysayers who <a href="https://www.insider.com/halle-bailey-responds-to-little-mermaid-backlash-2019-8">critiqued</a> her <a href="https://d23.com/halle-bailey-cast-ariel-live-action-reimagining-little-mermaid/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">initial casting in 2019</a>. Disney's latest remake is one of its best, but that's not saying much. Fantastic performances and a few smart updates aside, Marshall largely delivers the same paint-by-numbers story in a longer movie that should've pushed the bar more with its antagonist instead of wasting time on forgettable new songs. <h2>A better, more believable love story for Ariel and Eric</h2><div type="image" title="Prince Eric and Ariel in The Little Mermaid" height="2001" width="3000" msid="100424538" hostid="261"></div>There was always something creepy once you realized 16-year-old Ariel met, fell "in love" with, and married a guy within days of meeting him in the original movie. The remake does a much better job at pacing Ariel and Eric's relationship, forging a bond of friendship between the two over common interests (they both share a knack for collecting) to make their love story less shallow and more genuine. (She's also an adult here; according to production notes, live-action Ariel is 18.)The best update is a change to the deal Ursula makes with Ariel. In the remake, unbeknownst to the mermaid, Ursula makes it so she can't remember she needs to kiss Eric to stay human. Rather than view Eric as an object to throw herself at, Ariel's encouraged to get to know the man who holds her affection.It's a better message to send to children instead of chasing boys for kisses.As a result, the pair spend a day "warm on the sand," fulfilling Ariel's desire from her "Part of Your World" ballad to dance with humans on the shore, something the original never did. However, the couple still winds up married in a rushed ending that Disney tries to vaguely and oddly gloss over.<h2>Bailey and McCarthy carry the film with incredible vocals. The three new songs are largely forgettable.</h2><div type="image" title="The Little Mermaid Ursula" height="1453" width="3000" msid="100424539" hostid="261"></div>Melissa McCarthy makes a deliciously evil Ursula who's all too eager to take advantage of Ariel's infatuation. Her rendition of "Poor Unfortunate Souls" is the remake's second-best musical number apart from "Part of Your World."It's frustrating that the movie bothers introducing Ursula as King Triton's sister (a plot line teased in <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xViGEtZtGZY" target="_blank" rel="noopener">a deleted scene from the original</a>) and fails to dive deeper into that relationship. I expected the remake's additional 40-minute runtime to include some sort of explanation as to why Ursula was exiled to make her a more empathetic villain. (Perhaps Disney's waiting to mine that material for a prequel.)Despite <a href="https://www.today.com/popculture/movies/the-little-mermaid-realistic-flounder-scuttle-sebastian-backlash-rcna81811">online backlash over the realistic designs</a> of Flounder, Sebastian, and Scuttle, Ariel's trio of friends are standouts in the film. Daveed Diggs gives a particularly hysterical performance as the lovable crustacean, chasing down the teenager.Bailey also wows in a new song, "For the First Time." A clever number sung in her head after losing her voice, it's the best new addition of the three songs.Sorry not sorry, but no one asked for a forgettable Prince Eric song. (Although this would be a different story if it had been sung by Harry Styles, who <a href="https://variety.com/2023/film/news/harry-styles-rejected-little-mermaid-darker-films-non-musicals-1235573454/">turned down the role</a>).And as fun as Lin Manuel-Miranda's <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DIYbj-BxMWY" target="_blank" rel="noopener">"Scuttlebutt" rap</a> is on an initial listen, it's too juvenile to necessitate repeat plays.<h2>'The Little Mermaid' is one of Disney's best remakes, but the original is still better</h2><div type="image" title="The Little Mermaid" height="1716" width="4096" msid="100424541" hostid="261"></div>When Sebastian sang about a "carp playing a harp," "the lings on the strings," and "the trout rockin' out" in 1989's performance of "Under the Sea," a song that <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lNAPhTY2rd4">garnered the animated film an Oscar</a>, each of those lyrics was tied to a specific colorful visual of each fish playing instruments.In the remake, <a href="https://youtu.be/f5NInsk3sJk?t=115" target="_blank" rel="noopener">those same lyrics and more</a> ring hollow when they don't match what's happening on-screen.And that's where this movie and other remakes start to fall short. No matter how many of these reimaginings Disney makes ("The Little Mermaid" is the 18th since 2010, including <a href="https://www.insider.com/disney-cruella-movie-review-2021-5">straight</a>-to-<a href="https://www.insider.com/disney-pinocchio-remake-review-2022-9">streaming</a> <a href="https://www.insider.com/lady-and-the-tramp-remake-review-2019-10">releases</a>), there will always be animated moments you simply can't manufacture in the real world.Bailey looks stunning and graceful when flipping gorgeous fins that'd make animated Ariel jealous, but the iconic rock scene with a wave crashing from behind looks forcibly produced compared to artist Glen Keane's instantly recognizable image. <div type="image" title="The Little Mermaid" height="600" width="1200" msid="100424542" hostid="261"></div>Ursula's third-act transformation into an enormous monster is difficult to see in a poorly lit scene that renders her a blurry CGI monstrosity. And they couldn't even create an actual underwater palace for King Triton. His throne — more of a sad seat here — appears to sit in the middle of the ocean without protection.<a href="https://www.insider.com/why-disney-keeps-remaking-animated-movies-2020-5">Other than easy box-office wins</a>, Disney uses these remakes to refine some moments that haven't aged well and they're mostly well-executed, but it's becoming more difficult to justify these projects as anything more than nostalgic cash grabs and subscriber bait if you can't match or outdo the moments that made it iconic. But at least this one is mostly well done. "The Little Mermaid" is in theaters on Friday.<h2>Grade: B+</h2>

Now a new report suggests that the company will only think about the launch once the government's policy for EVs is settled, and it has more clarity on their roadmap in the country. The automobile maker essentially wants to be sure of how the government is planning to set up the infrastructure required for EVs, which includes ample charging stations, battery swapping hubs and similar. Yamaha <a href="https://www.timesnownews.com/auto/bike-news/article/yamaha-considering-launching-electric-scooter-in-india-reports/773521">had revealed</a> that it is developing a new platform for EVs at its headquarters in Japan, that will be used for making the EVs for Indian and global markets. However, Yamaha has not revealed details about the launch yet. As per a report from <a href="https://www.autocarindia.com/bike-news/yamaha-india-ev-launch-only-after-stable-government-policy-421202">Autocar India</a>, Yamaha Motors is expecting a stable roadmap from the government for the adoption of EVs in India before launching its electric vehicle. They are looking at the infrastructure, the facilities for EVs and are confident that the government is serious about EVs, which was seen from the revised FAME II policy. Fame II scheme aims to promote electrification of public and shared transportation through subsidies. About 7090 e-buses, 5 lakh e-3 wheelers, 55000 e-4 wheeler passenger cars and 10 lakh e-2 wheelers are likely to be supported through subsidies that will cut the price of EVs in India. The electric scooter market has seen considerable growth in recent years and is expected to grow as biggies like TVS and Bajaj have already launched their EVs while Hero and Suzuki have also announced their 2-wheeler EVs. Also, there are some promising EV startups like <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/business/auto/news/ather-450x-launched-in-india-price-features/articleshow/73693377.cms">Ather</a> that have shown promising consumer response in Tier 1 cities. Yamaha has been manufacturing EC-05 for the Taiwanese market in collaboration with GoGoro. GoGoro is a Taiwanese platform that has a wide battery-swapping network. EC-05 will not be launched in India as GoGoro has partnered with Hero MotoCorp for the battery swapping network and the development of new scooters based on GoGoro platform. Yamaha recently unveiled Fascino 125 Fi Hybrid in India, which is available in both disc and drum brake versions. It features a ‘Smart motor-generator (SMG)’ that adopts the hybrid system and provides smooth acceleration and a quieter engine start. Yamaha to launch its electric vehicle in India only after seeing a stable roadmap from the government

UM partnered with tech giant IBM this year for a <a href="https://www.bizjournals.com/southflorida/news/2019/08/14/university-of-miami-installs-3-7m-supercomputer.html">$3.7 million update</a> to the number-crunching supercomputer it's had in place since 2008, turning it into one that can process data in real or near-real time. The new supercomputer, named TRITON, has since attracted an influx of requests across UM's three campuses and countless academic departments.While supercomputing was <a href="https://www.govtech.com/products/Supercomputers-Give-Silicon-Valley-Companies-a-Competitive-Edge.html">once limited</a> to laboratories with the funding to support it, the technology <a href="https://www.govtech.com/products/Supercomputers-Give-Silicon-Valley-Companies-a-Competitive-Edge.html">now encompasses</a> industries like energy, transportation, and finance - with academia being the latest to join the fray.Supercomputing systems are appealing because of their processing and analytic power. They consist of collections of smaller computers that link together, and are controlled through specific software to work as a unified whole.For example, if the supercomputer is given a complicated math problem, the software that controls the whole system will detect the nature of the problem, parcel out activity and jobs to different nodes (the smaller computers within the supercomputer), collect the output from each of those nodes, and then bring everything together and analyze it as part of a bigger picture. To get a sense of how supercomputing has worked in higher education, and to see what capabilities it offers that other schools might soon adopt, Business Insider talked with Nicholas Tsinoremas, who founded and directs the UM Center for Computational Science and serves as UM's vice provost for research computing and data. He says that demand in higher education for supercomputing is set to rise. <h2>Heightened demand for supercomputing</h2>TRITON is already being used in several classes within UM's genetics program, and there's a new class set to launch in January for computer science students who are interested in utilizing the system's AI and machine-learning capabilities. "There are plenty more," Tsinoremas told Business Insider "We have similar classes in the marine and atmospheric sciences."But supercomputers are applicable in more than just the hard sciences."At this point the students are pushing, and they want it in all their classes, not only in the traditional scientific classes," Tsinoremas said. For humanities students, for example, TRITON can "read" hundreds of books within a day and extract relevant information. This capability underscores Tsinoremas' assertion that supercomputing is "very pervasive" in terms of applicability for students of all disciplines. Business school offerings at UM have also expanded to include supercomputing. The university's business analytics program, called digital marketing, and master's in data science both use supercomputing to prepare students to better process data in the digital age. "One of the things that we want to do is not only to catalyze the research that our researchers are doing here at the University of Miami, but also, if you will, educate the next generation of students to be familiar with these kinds of technologies and approaches," Tsinoremas said. TRITON's computing power sets it apart: The system is about eight to 10 times more powerful than UM's previous supercomputer. <h2>Redefining supercomputing</h2>Dave Turek, vice president of technical computing at IBM, says that supercomputers essentially solve problems that can be represented mathematically. Over the past 10 years, though, their capabilities have expanded tremendously, keeping pace with ever-increasing quantities of data. Now what's important is how much data they can process in as short a time as possible.TRITON currently processes more than 10 petabytes (10 million gigabytes) of data, which over 1,500 individual users across UM's three campuses currently utilize for research and education. Turek says an easy way to visualize the power of supercomputing is thinking of a honeycomb in a beehive."Each one of those cells in a beehive is an independent thing, but the hive itself is composed of all these honeycombs that are interconnected to the same kind of thing," Turek told Business Insider. "We take each of these small computers, we connect them to each other and we communicate with them via software to orchestrate their behavior in a coherent way to tackle the problem at hand."<h2>Analyzing cost</h2>In terms of cost to benefit, Turek says that $3.7 million for the update to what became TRITON was inexpensive for a scientific instrument of that processing power."If I put in a supercomputer into a university, everybody gets to use it," Turek said. "As a result, it really amplifies the leverage that the university gets from the investment they've made."Under software control, multiple people can use different parts of the supercomputer at the same time. So one full rack, or column of computing nodes, could go to the English department, and a quarter of a rack could go to a chemistry project.The system can be divided again under software control to process different kinds of jobs at different times of the day."In a university context you might at one time be running problems from the chemistry department, prompts from physics, problems from the economics department, all at the same time in different locations inside this physical computer," Turek said.The ROI for supercomputers, then, is found in the accelerated way that its benefits are distributed throughout the university. Private equity is backing big e-commerce deals

Instead of worrying about drowning, you can float and explore the beauty of an underwater world.And while a scuba course is well worth your time, the sport does require a lot of knowledge - and some heavy, expensive, and complex gear.As a diver myself, I definitely see the appeal of a handheld device that you pop into your mouth to breathe underwater. So did the makers of <a href="http://www.jamesbondlifestyle.com/product/thunderball-breather-and-die-another-day-breather">James Bond</a> and <a href="http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/A99_aquata_breather">Star Wars</a>.Does a real one exist today, though?Right now there's an Indiegogo campaign for a device called the "Triton." Its <a href="https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/triton-world-s-first-artificial-gills-re-breather/x/13650325#/">makers claim</a> users can use it to breathe underwater for up to 45 minutes at a maximum depth of 15 feet. That campaign has raised approximately $700,000 with a month left, but <a href="http://www.techinsider.io/can-triton-device-indiegogo-pull-oxygen-water-2016-3">multiple experts have told Tech Insider</a> they're very skeptical."It's not realistic, it's science fiction," Neal Pollock, a research associate at the Center for Hyperbaric Medicine and Environmental Physiology at Duke University Medical Center, and the research director for the <a href="http://www.diversalertnetwork.org/">Divers Alert Network</a>, <a href="http://www.techinsider.io/can-triton-device-indiegogo-pull-oxygen-water-2016-3">told Tech Insider</a>.Still, the experts we spoke with don't think an "artificial gills" device is impossible - just incredibly challenging.Here's what it would take to create a compact device that could let you breathe underwater.<h2>How to make 'artificial gills' that would work</h2><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><img src="https://static-ssl.businessinsider.com/image/56f5ad78dd0895d15c8b4839-1000-563/jedibreathingdevice.jpg" alt="jedi breathing device underwater triton" data-mce-source="StarWars.com" data-link="http://www.starwars.com/databank/jedi-breathing-device" /><a href="http://www.starwars.com/databank/jedi-breathing-device">StarWars.com</a>The Star Wars version looks even less realistic than proposed versions we've seen, but perhaps we can assume that a long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away, all of these problems were solved.</div></div></div>Pollock says three major issues have to be solved.First, your device has to actually extract enough oxygen from water to fulfill your biological needs. In theory, a device could pull enough oxygen from water to do this, but it would have to be incredibly efficient and filter enough water to collect all that oxygen.In 2014, when news of the Triton device first appeared online, marine biologist and diver Alistair Dove <a href="http://www.deepseanews.com/2014/01/triton-not-dive-or-dive-not-there-is-no-triton/">weighed in on the oxygen extraction problem at Deep Sea News</a>.Dove notes that, even if a device is 100% efficient at pulling oxygen from water, you'd have to force enough water through a pump to collect all the oxygen required to breathe normally - upwards of five liters every 15 seconds. He calculated doing so would require a pump that's larger than the entire Triton device. And since there's apparently no water pump on the Triton device, it's unlikely enough water could naturally pass through it while swimming to provide the oxygen our bodies need.So our futuristic device would probably need a tiny yet powerful pump (one of the easier inventions in our sci-fi creation) and an incredibly efficient means - chemical, mechanical, or both - of pulling oxygen from water.Second, even if you'd solved the oxygen extraction issue, you'd then need to store that gas in a container of some kind.If your system uses a chemical that's incredibly good at attracting oxygen, that oxygen is going to strongly adhere to your attractant. "Putting the three of them together, I just don't see it in our immediate future."To be clear, Pollock and others are not saying a device like Triton could never happen - just that there are serious technological hurdles in the way right now.Multiple researchers contacted Tech Insider after we published <a href="http://www.techinsider.io/can-triton-device-indiegogo-pull-oxygen-water-2016-3">our first post about Triton</a>, and they echoed Pollock's skepticism. They noted that it should be very easy for the team behind Triton to provide evidence that doesn't disclose any patents (a response they used in reply to some crowdfunder questioning on their Indiegogo page). The young field is already lucrative - $11.3 billion globally - and set to grow exponentially. The Association for Unmanned Vehicle Systems International, a trade organization, predicts that the global market will be $140 billion in 10 years.
Studying UAS is relatively new, too. The University of North Dakota started offering the first bachelor's degree program in 2009, with other public schools like Kansas State and aviation-oriented private schools like Embry Riddle following suit. In total, 30 universities now offer UAS degree programs, with community colleges offering two-year degrees as well.
While most of the news about UAS centers around their military applications, experts say the growth is going to come through private work in the US, whether it's farmers inspecting fields, meteorologists investigating hurricanes, or construction workers surveying sites.<div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><img src="https://static-ssl.businessinsider.com/image/541740446bb3f7e36a3a4129/uav-control.gif" border="0" alt="UAV control"> K-State Salina</img></div></div></div>
Kurt Barnhart, who oversees Kansas State University's UAS program, says that most of the program's grads head to work for government contractors with military applications, many of whom send grads overseas on deployment. But there's also an uptick of grads joining US-based startups, he says.
The high salaries relate to the specialization and travel that comes with the job.
"If it involves overseas deployment, starting salary is close to six figures, $80,000 plus deployment pay, an additional compensation package for being deployed and having to spend six months out of the year sequestered away in Afghanistan," Barnhart says. 
Domestic jobs - with startup companies like <a href="http://www.roboflight.com/" target="_blank">Roboflight</a> or <a href="http://precisionhawk.com/" target="_blank">Precision Hawk</a> - start at about $60,000 a year. Compare that with first-year pilots of conventional aircraft; <a href="http://blogs.wsj.com/middleseat/2009/06/16/pilot-pay-want-to-know-how-much-your-captain-earns/" target="_blank">they start out at as low as $21,000 a year</a>.

Philip Ellerbroek, Roboflight's global director of sales, says that charting a career in UAS requires understanding the facets of the field. You could design the hardware itself, train in piloting the aircraft, or write software code to make the whole thing work. You also have to factor in scale of the vehicle itself: Flying a hobbyist plane won't require a degree, but if you want to pilot <a href="http://www.saffm.hq.af.mil/shared/media/document/AFD-100128-072.pdf" target="_blank">a $4 million military device like a Predator</a>, you need specialization. 
Ellerbroek advises would-be UAS grads to get close to the companies in the field, since a formal <keyword id="6355445" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Education">education</keyword> won't give you all the knowledge you need. 
"Like everything else, you can't learn it all in a classroom or a book," he says. "You need to a do an internship, tinker a lot on your own, or read a lot online." 
His favorite online resource: <a href="http://diydrones.com/" target="_blank">DIYDrones</a>, started by Chris Anderson, the former Wired editor-in-chief who started 3D Robotics, perhaps the "it" startup in the field.

<h3 class="p1">What You Learn When You're Getting A UAS Degree</h3>
Ben Trapnell runs the UAS program at the University of North Dakota, the first of its kind when it started in 2009. 
After completing the program - which investigates the systems involved in the air and on the ground for a UAS, how to take photographs and other forms of remote sensing, and commercial-grade flight simulation - students become commercially certified pilots.
"Many students get a flight instructor certificate as well," Trapnell says. "It's proven to be a real hiring advantage - companies want them to teach UAS to other employees."
UND students have received starting salaries of over $60,000, he says. That figure doubles or triples if they go overseas. But UND isn't just trying to develop operators of aircraft. It also aims to train people to build the devices themselves.
"We're not trying to develop the operators," he says, "but develop the skill sets our grads need so they can become leaders in civil UAS that's developing. "You'll probably just have something embedded in you," he told Business Insider , "a microchip of sorts or some interface...and it's just easier to talk to anyone in the world immediately."He has some insights on the state of the world now, too, especially on people who say they don't believe in climate change. "I think they're totally ignorant. They have no idea how to approach the problem or what the evidence is and probably haven't read the literature," Mlodinow said. "If they deny the <keyword id="41551" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="100" keywordseo="science">science</keyword> the science in that area, they should not trust MRI machines or X-rays and they shouldn't use a cell phone."Here's a transcript of our whole conversation with Mlodinow, edited lightly for clarity and length.BUSINESS INSIDER: To the casual observer, you have an incredibly varied history.LEONARD MLODINOW: I became a physicist, worked in academic physics as faculty at Cal tech, and went into writing for Hollywood, went into computer games, and went into writing books and teaching at Caltech again.BI: How did you end up as a screenwriter for "Star Trek: The Next Generation?"LM: Well, I got that job because they'd read something I'd written for MacGyver and they liked it and they hired me. When I was as Caltech I started writing screenplays. I used to write short stories just for fun. And when I got the job at Caltech, having come from Northern California - where people are rather prejudiced against Southern California - I was too. And I'm thinking, 'What will I do in Southern California? If I go there I'm gonna write screenplays to see what happens. He says in the next 100 years computers will be smarter than humans and surpass us in artificial intelligence. What do you think?LM: It's possible - I wouldn't say it's outrageous. I wouldn't think that neither he nor I knows, and neither of us will be around in the next 100 years to be disproved. I guess I should remind you that he said in the 1980's that by the end of the century, we would solve all of physics. We would have the unified theory of everything. And in 2005 I was talking to him and I brought that up and I said, 'What do you think now?' And he said, 'I still think by the end of the century we're gonna have everything solved.' So, he seems to think that by the end of the century, whatever century you're in, everything will be done. And if it isn't, then he says the same thing again when the next century starts. Knowing him, he might be around next century.But I think that the kind of computers we've built today are in general nothing like how the brain works. The brain is a massively paralleled processor and we are starting to use parallel processing and they used that in the LHC [Large Hadron Collider) to analyze the data. But, I don't know. There's a long way to go, it's a long time, and people are working on the problem.Who will ever know? How do you even judge? A computer is much different from a brain. Are we going to have something with like 86 billion transistors that are each connected to a thousand or ten thousand other ones? Probably not quite like that. How will we know? I don't think the Turing test is a really good way of answering that question. It'll be a different kind of intelligence.BI: In your mind, what will society look like in the next 20 years? The next 100 years?LM: In the next 100 years, I have no idea, and I don't think anyone does, so if they tell you, they're just making it up. In the next 20 years, I can look back to 1995 and I can take that difference and then move it forward. I feel like the explosion of mass communication will continue and we will be even more connected and easily connected to other people than we are today without having to carry around these devices. Information is very fluid and easy to access - what we'll do with that, I don't know. I think that's the next step, because you can drown in that information and also a lot of the information floating about is false - it's wrong information so I think those are the challenges to be able to do something constructive with it and be able to tell what's right from wrong.Our social networking is exploding. We can be in contact with so many more people than years ago. In 20 years, you'll probably just have something embedded in you - a microchip of sorts or some interface and it's just easier to talk to anyone in the world immediately. What drives us as human beings to continue exploring the world around us?LM: That, I think, is a fundamental part of our nature. It's a kind of curiosity about where we fit in. What is the world? How does it work and how do we fit in? It's something that you can see in very young infants, and you can see it in all cultures and it's a fundamental quality of being human.BI: Can science and religion - or spirituality, as some would call it, be reconciled?LM: I think that this dichotomy is something that is fairly recent. First of all, when the brain evolved to have the capacity to ask such questions, to understand abstractions, and to be curious, one of the first things we started doing was asking these spiritual questions. Humans used to live as nomads wandering around and leaving their sick behind to die and leaving the bodies behind, because they couldn't carry them with. And then the first human settlements in the Agricultural Revolution, where we domesticated plants and animals and started living in one place, was really driven by these spiritual questions and the desire to be near our departed loved ones. And that's where we really started to ask questions about the world around us. In fact, chemistry came from embalming people trying to preserve the bodies, and so science grew out of those spiritual questions. The first scientists were doing science to try to get closer to God.<blockquote class="pullquote float_right">The first scientists were doing science to try to get closer to God.</blockquote>Robert Boyle - the chemist, Newton - the physicist, Darwin. People misunderstand them. They started making their investigations as a way of understanding God's plan for the world, so that was all part of it until very recently. Certainly since Darwin, there have been people who have opposed ideas based on religious fundamentalism, but Darwin for instance was able to reconcile. He was a religious man, and he was able to reconcile evolution with religion. He didn't have a problem with that. He just said, 'Well, God put everything on the Earth in a certain habitat with a plan that would evolve and that's what's happening.' He eventually became an atheist - it's when his daughter died at age 10 that he lost his faith in God.BI: You've explored the concept of randomness in the past. In your opinion, are humans in control of their own destinies or are they puppets in a play, so to speak?LM: Well, puppets implies that something else is controlling you, and I think it's neither. We certainly have the experience or feeling of controlling our own behavior. Whether some being with infinite or extreme intelligence or data on the state of our bodies could predict what we are going to do beforehand because it's predetermined by the laws of nature - maybe that's true. I don't believe in free will, literally. <blockquote class="pullquote">I don't believe in free will, literally. </blockquote>I believe that the laws of nature govern your actions. On some level, what you're doing is not your choice but it's governed by the state of your body right now. But we have no way of knowing that. It's far too complex. BI: What are your thoughts on the fact that a lot of people in this country do not believe in evolution?LM: They're misguided. I think it's destructive. It's not only evolution - it's people who don't accept or respect science, and make uninformed judgments about a lot of political and medical issues. These are important issues, and I feel it's unfortunate that we have people like that in this country. BI: There are people that argue that climate change is part of the natural cycle, as opposed to it being man-made, what are your thoughts on that?LM: I think they're totally ignorant. They have no idea how to approach the problem or what the evidence is and probably haven't read the literature and that there are thousands of scientists who have been studying this for years and are experts and devote their lives to it. To dismiss them because you happen to have a different opinion as if one could look at the weather report and understand global climate change is arrogant and ignorant. Among climate scientists, a fraction don't accept it, so I think it's been definitively proven using methods of modern science - the same methods that bring us airplanes and GPS systems and lasers and MRI machines that these people all use. If they deny the science the science in that area, they should not trust MRI machines or X-rays and they shouldn't use a cell phone. Time will tell.</img></div></div></div> BI: Are there other forms of life out there in the universe?LM: We have no evidence that there is, and we can't even theoretically say what the chances are, because we found a lot of stars that are like the sun, and a lot of planets that exist in the habitable zone. So there's certainly the raw materials for aliens and for intelligent life. We know that once you have some form of life, like a bacteria, that it can evolve to intelligent life, but we still don't know how to explain the first creation of DNA, RNA, or the macromolecules of basic life - how they came into being. People are getting closer and closer to understanding that, but we don't really know.
