AI can create 2.7 million tech jobs by 2028 in India, study says

Ola Electric is cutting 500 jobs across verticals and levels as part of a restructuring exercise, according to people aware of the development. The company, which has come under the scanner for its poor aftersales service recently, had started the job cut in the September quarter. "It has been going on for some time now, starting around July. It has been a gradual process of removing redundant roles across verticals and levels," said a source. The exercise is expected to be completed by the end of this month. Ola Electric is looking to optimise workforce with an aim to improving margins and enhance profitability, the person added. Earlier this month, Central Consumer Protection Authority (CCPA) had ordered a detailed probe into complaints related to alleged "deficiencies" in services and electric two-wheelers manufactured by Ola Electric. Last month, the company had said that out of 10,644 complaints received from CCPA, it has resolved 99.1 per cent of the complaints.

As per the agreement, PSMC will provide design and construction support to build India's first AI-enabled greenfield fab in Gujarat, license a broad portfolio of technologies and provide engineering support to the fab unit. "We are pleased to partner with PSMC, whose technology and expertise will significantly accelerate our roadmap to pioneer semiconductor manufacturing in India. It will position us to play a key role in the growing semiconductor market to serve global customers," Tata Sons Chairman N Chandrasekaran said. The company is setting up a chip manufacturing unit in Dholera at an investment of up to Rs 91,000 crore ( about USD 11 billion). The tariffs could also encourage US businesses to source more chips domestically and help persuade chipmaking giants, like the Taiwan-based <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/tsmc-making-apple-iphone-chips-helps-us-semiconductor-bet-2024-10">TSMC</a>, to keep building factories in the US. "You could have done it with tariffs. You tariff it so high that they will come and build their chip companies for nothing."To be sure, the impacts of a tariff policy on chips could be mixed. Jeff Koch, an analyst at the semiconductor research and consulting firm SemiAnalysis, told BI that tariffs could lead to higher prices for goods containing chips, such as cars, electronics, and appliances. He added that US chipmakers could likely benefit from these tariffs because it could help them compete with companies abroad that sell chips at lower prices.The Trump campaign did not respond to a request for comment.<h2 id="dc733634-a51d-47cf-a7b9-405bdfac9e61">Tariffs on chips could boost construction and manufacturing jobs</h2>Patrick Moorhead, founder, CEO, and chief analyst at the research and advisory firm Moor Insights and Strategy, told BI that tariffs could increase the number of US chip manufacturing jobs. He added that he thinks the policy could incentivize chipmakers like TSMC and Samsung, which is based in South Korea, to boost manufacturing in the US."The cost of manufacturing in the US for Samsung and TSMC would be lower than a 30% to 40% tariff on <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/quartz-mine-computer-chips-hurricane-helene-spruce-pine-semiconductor-2024-9">wafers</a> and <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/us-ai-chip-production-manufacturing-nvidia-labor-china-taiwan-korea-2024-4">packaging</a>," he said, referring to key components of the chipmaking process.Jeff Ferry, chief economist at the Coalition for a Prosperous America, a nonprofit that advocates for increasing domestic manufacturing, estimated that tariffs could create roughly 100,000 jobs at US chip manufacturers and their suppliers.He said this estimate was partly based on a <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.semiconductors.org/wp-content/uploads/2021/05/2021-Jobs-Report_2-pager.pdf">report</a> published in 2021 by the Semiconductor Industry Association — a trade association and lobbying group — that said a $50 billion investment would help create an estimated 10 additional chip factories in the US. That could add about 42,000 direct jobs at the companies building these factories and 101,500 indirect jobs at chipmakers' suppliers, per the report.Ferry said he thought chip tariffs could lead to the creation of roughly 10 additional factories, which led him to come to the 100,000 jobs estimate. Intel and TSMC did not respond to a question about what impact a Trump administration tariff policy would have on each company's job creation plans in the US.An Intel spokesperson pointed to a <a target="_blank" href="https://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/newsroom/news/us-chips-act-intel-direct-funding.html#gs.i5ie0q">press release</a> from March, which said the company's $100 billion investment in the US over the next five years is expected to create more than 10,000 jobs at Intel and nearly 20,000 construction jobs. TSMC pointed to a <a target="_blank" href="https://pr.tsmc.com/english/news/3122">press release</a> from April, that said TSMC's investments in three Arizona chip factories are expected to create roughly 6,000 company jobs, more than 20,000 construction jobs, and tens of thousands of indirect supplier and consumer jobs.Stephen Ezell, the vice president for global innovation policy at the Information Technology and Innovation Foundation, said that the effectiveness of a tariff on chips could be limited, in part because many chips aren't imported <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.usitc.gov/publications/332/executive_briefings/ebot_cellular_phones_and_covid.pdf">directly</a> into the US: He said they often come embedded into finished products like <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.usitc.gov/publications/332/executive_briefings/ebot_cellular_phones_and_covid.pdf">smartphones</a> or computers.For example, he said that in most cases, chips that TSMC manufactures in Taiwan for Apple are sent to <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.theatlantic.com/technology/archive/2022/12/tsmc-apple-memory-chip-production-us-china-taiwan-relations/672593/">China</a> or <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.cnbc.com/2024/04/10/apple-made-14-billion-worth-of-iphones-in-india-in-shift-from-china.html">India</a> to be incorporated into a product like an iPhone. Therefore, the chip wouldn't be subject to a US tariff but the iPhone would.When deciding whether to build a chip factory in the US, Ezell said several factors — including wage rates, the labor talent pool, and tax policy — would be bigger considerations for companies than the country's tariff policy. Others prepare job descriptions to go up in January, said Michelle Volberg, a longtime recruiter who's founder and CEO of <a target="_blank" href="https://www.withtwill.com/">Twill</a>, a venture-backed startup that pays tech workers to recommend peers for key jobs."We're seeing a pretty healthy number of roles planning to be posted in January, probably more than we even expected," Volberg told BI. Volberg said she's seen an "upward trend" in the past 12 months that's now continuing."I don't see anything currently on the horizon that will challenge the US economy in any way," Volberg said.She said some of the demand is in tech, particularly from companies focused on AI looking to hire in engineering, product, sales, and marketing.That's welcome news because while the overall US unemployment rate remains low, some tech firms have been cutting in some roles and <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/meta-job-cuts-indicate-tech-companies-like-recurring-layoffs-2024-10">slow to hire</a> in other areas — much to the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/job-seeker-applied-more-than-2000-roles-2024-9">frustration of job seekers</a>.Kathleen Lin Hurtubise, CEO and founder of Aloha Hospitality Professionals, a staffing firm focused on hospitality and light industrial workers, told BI that uncertainty over tax and immigration policies had led some of the company's customers to wait out the politics."We had a handful of clients who put us on pause until the elections," she said. Many employers, Hurtubise said, wanted to know how business decisions they had already made would likely play out once it became clear who would take the White House.<h2 id="11219916-ac03-49a8-ae71-be52cee6d5bf">More employers could turn to automation</h2>Jason Leverant, COO and president at AtWork Group, a staffing firm focused on areas including advanced manufacturing, logistics, and warehousing, told BI that a focus on bringing manufacturing jobs back to the US — so-called <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/us-manufacturing-production-boom-economy-made-in-america-trade-war-2024-10">reshoring efforts</a> that are already underway — could further help boost momentum in hiring for workers <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/employers-dropping-degree-requirements-slow-to-hire-for-skills-2024-10">without college degrees</a>.Yet, Leverant said, reshoring could be more expensive for employers and, when combined with talent shortages, could push more <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/ai-wont-take-as-many-jobs-as-feared-altman-2024-9">companies to automate</a> where possible.Reduced immigration could also harm industries like construction and agriculture, where immigrants often fill many roles, he said."Do we start seeing a skills gap or a talent gap there?" Leverant said. He said such a chasm could eventually push wages higher in those areas if employers grow desperate for workers.Leverant said a focus by some in Trump's inner circle, including Tesla CEO Elon Musk, on areas like workplace <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/elon-musk-tesla-optimus-humanoid-robots-robotaxi-day-2024-10">automation</a> could mean as some aspects of jobs go away, workers who get the right training could take on "more complex roles that even advanced robotics can't touch right now."<h2 id="efdae223-ce1f-4c24-b0c3-4c4f63bde68d">A postelection rush to hire</h2>Aaron Cleavinger, a managing partner at Murdoch Mason Executive Search Group, told BI that he's been "inundated" with new search requests from clients since the election.He said that likely reflects a mix of the typical end-of-year ramp-up and also several months' worth of demand by employers, particularly in areas like manufacturing, that held off posting jobs because of political uncertainty."Anything that they've been delaying for the last couple of months, they're finally releasing," Cleavinger said, referring to employers and job postings.Cleavinger said that in many cases, employers might have been agnostic about which candidate won and instead just wanted to know which way it would break."They say, 'Hey, just tell me what I can count on, and then I can build a plan around that,'" he said.Cleavinger said demand for hiring will vary by industry, as it often does. Yet he said for small and medium-sized companies, optimism that there could be tax cuts could help boost budgets for hiring.<h2 id="dfe0f4e6-90ea-4cf9-bd4f-582908e761ca">Obstacles could emerge</h2>Even as some employers look to increase hiring, getting — and keeping — a job might get harder for some workers. Peter Rahbar, an employment attorney and founder of the boutique law firm The Rahbar Group, told BI that he expects to see an erosion of protections afforded to federal workers, including those seeking jobs.If enforcement of antidiscrimination laws becomes deprioritized, Rahbar said, that could make it harder for some people, including women and minorities, to land and retain jobs.Rahbar said reductions to immigration could hurt industries beyond agriculture and construction, including tech. That's because some tech companies needing workers rely on skilled immigrants to fill some roles.For now, though, Cleavinger, from Murdoch Mason Executive Search Group, expects demand for workers will generally heat up."I expect a pretty significant uptick in hiring. We usually see that anyway at the end of the year, but I think it'll be a little more pronounced now," Cleavinger said.

A Goldman Sachs report published last year estimated that <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/what-jobs-will-ai-replace-labor-market-artificial-intelligence-impact-2023-7">300 million</a> full-time jobs across the globe could be disrupted — not necessarily replaced — by AI in the coming years. It's <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/jobs-lost-in-may-because-of-ai-report-2023-6">already costing</a> some workers their jobs.Similar to US <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/jobs-ai-chatgpt-career-change-reskilling-tech-training-workers-disruptions-2023-11">manufacturing workers</a> who lost their jobs in recent decades to advancements like <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/automation-labor-market-wage-inequality-middle-class-jobs-study-2021-6">automation</a>, those displaced by AI could find themselves without the skills needed for the modern workforce.But there might be some reason to avoid a doom and gloom outlook. According to Steven Davis, senior fellow and director of research at the Hoover Institute — a public policy think tank based at Stanford University — the average person who loses their job due to AI will be better positioned to find a new role than the average US manufacturing worker who <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-manufacturing-factories-save-america-economy-future-crappy-service-jobs-2022-7">lost their job</a> in recent history."For any given scale of job loss caused by AI, there's going to be less economic hardship than we can anticipate from our previous experience with industrial job loss," Davis told Business Insider.In 2000, roughly <a target="_blank" href="https://fred.stlouisfed.org/series/MANEMP">17 million</a> Americans worked in manufacturing, but by 2010, the number had fallen to about 11 million — it's roughly 13 million as of June. Much of the decline was <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-manufacturing-factories-save-america-economy-future-crappy-service-jobs-2022-7">in the Midwest</a>. Between 1990 and 2019, employment in the Midwest's manufacturing industry fell by over <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.bls.gov/opub/mlr/2021/article/exploring-midwest-manufacturing-employment-from-1990-to-2019.htm#:~:text=Between%201990%20and%202019%2C%20the,by%201.1%20million%2C%2021.2%20percent.">1 million</a>, or about 21%.Various factors, including <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-the-pandemic-changed-manufacturing-forever-according-to-execs-2021-4">automation</a> and <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/what-happened-to-american-jobs-in-the-80s-2017-7">globalization</a>, have driven the decline, and many workers who lost their jobs <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/us-men-working-less-recessions-employment-productivity-2024-4">struggled to find work</a> in the aftermath. However, Davis said workers who are displaced by AI should have a better chance of avoiding the same fate. It comes down to when — and where — AI job losses are likely to materialize.To be sure, there is significant disagreement among experts about what the AI future will <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/ai-wont-take-your-job-someone-using-it-will-quote-2024-6">mean for US workers</a>. But some say looking at previous disruptions to the labor market could <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/rise-of-ai-artificial-intelligence-how-to-prepare-history-productivity-2023-7">provide some insight</a> into what lies ahead.<h2 id="77281e66-a782-45df-a95d-d659a5fb618f">AI job displacement will be less concentrated than the loss of manufacturing jobs</h2>Some level of job loss is inevitable in the US economy — whether it be due to a recession, automation, or some other factor. In June, over 1.4 million Americans were <a target="_blank" href="https://fred.stlouisfed.org/series/JTSLDL">laid off</a> or discharged, among the lowest monthly figures over the past two decades. But when a person loses their job and can't find a new one, a temporary setback can end up having a <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/college-graduates-cant-find-jobs-earn-less-strong-labor-market-2024-6">lasting impact</a> on their finances.Therefore, when one weighs the impacts of the coming AI boom, Davis said it's wise to consider not only <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/ai-radically-reshape-job-market-global-economy-employee-labor-innovation-2023-8">how many jobs it could displace</a> — which happens to be extremely difficult to forecast — and focus on a more manageable question: How hard of a time will any displaced workers have finding new roles?Davis said there are several reasons workers who are displaced by AI should have an easier time finding work than many <a target="_blank" href="https://www.journals.uchicago.edu/doi/full/10.1086/700896">manufacturing workers</a> of the past.First, when manufacturing jobs <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/jobs-that-were-popular-in-2000-that-have-almost-disappeared">have been lost</a>, it's often happened in bunches. A <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/major-iconic-factory-closings-2008-2011-2">factory closed</a> or a recession led to widespread cuts — Davis said economic downturns have historically hit the manufacturing industry "especially hard."Not only have many manufacturing workers experienced job losses around the same time, but they've also tended to be clustered geographically around large manufacturing facilities, Davis said. This created situations where a large number of laid-off manufacturing workers with similar skills were looking for jobs at the same time in the same area — and there often just wasn't enough work to go around."If you enter the market or you need to find a new job in a recession, it's typically harder, not just because there's less hiring going on but because there are lots of other people looking for jobs at the same time," Davis said.However, job losses in most industries, including those expected to be <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/job-disruption-ai-future-careers-blue-collar-desk-work-2023-11">impacted by AI</a>, are less likely to happen at the same time and in the same area, Davis said. So even if AI displaces some jobs, he expects workers to be in a better position to find a new role.Additionally, to the extent workers displaced by AI are concentrated geographically, Davis said they're more likely to be in densely populated areas like cities. Impacted workers in cities would be more likely to have <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/best-us-cities-for-job-opportunities-earnings-potential-nashville-austin-2023-4">job opportunities</a> than workers where manufacturing jobs were concentrated, which often were <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/midwest-america-cities-downtown-crisis-office-apocalypse-urban-doom-loop-2023-6">in the Midwest</a>.Secondly, the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/millennials-high-earners-moved-office-work-from-home-remote-work-2024-3">rise of remote work</a> has also led many companies' workforces to be more geographically dispersed than they used to be. So even if a company replaced many of its workers with AI, these people would be less likely to compete with each other as they looked for new jobs."For the people who lose their jobs, at least many of them are not in a local labor market that's being hit by a wave of job losses from a single company or a single industry," Davis said. He added that remote working arrangements could also expand job opportunities for impacted workers — they wouldn't only have to apply for jobs in their local areas.In June, about 24% of full-time US workers age 16 and older <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/end-remote-work-could-hurt-overemployed-workers-job-jugglers-2024-7">worked from home</a> at least some of the time, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics — 11% were remote for all their working hours.<h2 id="b7e5e4c2-f6aa-432c-b845-e550f1a55e33">Widespread AI job displacement won't happen for at least a decade</h2>While Davis is uncertain about the timing and scale of AI job displacement, he said he doesn't expect AI to drive major job losses over the next decade."I think AI is a potentially revolutionary technology, but it's one thing to develop the technology itself," Davis said. "To actually commercialize it at scale takes a long time typically, and we'll run into political resistance and policy resistance that will also slow down the process."Experts have raised concerns about AI's potential to produce <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/developer-creates-ai-disinformation-system-using-openai-2023-9">misinformation</a>, violate <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/openai-copyright-lawsuit-authors-chatgpt-trained-on-books-2023-7">copyright law</a>, and even lead to <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/ai-report-risks-human-extinction-state-department-expert-reaction-2024-3">human extinction</a>. Congress has <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/ai-regulations-what-lawmakers-president-are-doing-2024-4">yet to pass</a> comprehensive regulation related to AI, but President Joe Biden signed an executive order last year that included safety standards for AI researchers to follow.Davis said that historically, it's taken decades for new technologies to be adopted across the entire economy. He pointed to <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/power-grid-strain-home-vehicle-electrification-ai-startups-2024-3">electrification</a>, the microprocessor, and the steam engine as past examples.While there's been speculation that underlying AI technologies <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/ai-is-developing-too-fast-pause-bard-says-its-complicated-2023-4">could improve faster</a> than previous technologies, Davis said he thinks adopting them at scale will remain a challenge.He isn't alone in his skepticism. Jim Covello, Goldman Sachs' head of global equity research, expressed a similar sentiment during a "Goldman Sachs Exchanges" podcast released on July 16."We're a couple of years into this, and there's not a single thing that this is being used for that's cost-effective at this point," he <a target="_blank" href="https://www.goldmansachs.com/intelligence/podcasts/episodes/a-skeptical-look-at-ai-investment.html">said</a> of AI technology. "I think there's an unbelievable misunderstanding of what the technology can do today. The problems that it can solve aren't big problems."What's more, Davis said there's also plenty of potential for AI to <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/new-jobs-al-will-create-no-collegee-degree-chatgpt-2023-11">create jobs</a>, adding that the early evidence suggests this tech isn't displacing jobs — but simply <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/jobs-at-risk-from-ai-replace-change-chatgpt-automation-study-2023-7">changing them</a>."It's different than introducing a bunch of robots into a manufacturing plant and saying we don't need the workers anymore," he said. "That may eventually happen with AI, but that's not the main way it's been playing out so far."However, in the decades ahead, Davis said it's possible that AI could lead to wider job displacement. During that same time, South Korean outbound investment in China decreased from 11% to 1%.Over a third of Korean project announcements in the US in 2023 were in the automotive or electronics sectors, including a <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/georgia-electric-vehicle-battery-manufacturing-inflation-reduction-act-clean-energy-2024-9">Kia plant in Georgia</a> set to take advantage of the IRA's $7,500 tax credit for buyers of US-made EVs.Similarly, in February, Hyundai <a target="_blank" rel=" nofollow" class="" href="https://www.prnewswire.com/news-releases/hyundai-announces-new-production-start-date-at-metaplant-america-during-hyundai-day-in-georgia-302071754.html#:~:text=Hyundai%20Motor%20Group%20is%20investing,that%20will%20employ%203%2C500%20workers.">announced</a> over $7 billion in investment in production facilities in Georgia. Samsung <a target="_blank" href="https://www.americanprogress.org/article/new-samsung-semiconductor-plant-in-taylor-texas/#:~:text=Samsung%20invested%20approximately%20%2417%20billion,artificial%20intelligence%20(AI)%20purposes">invested</a> $17 billion in a semiconductor plant in Texas that is expected to create thousands of jobs. LG recently <a target="_blank" href="https://www.queencreekaz.gov/Home/Components/News/News/13041/13">invested</a> $5.5 billion in building a battery plant in Arizona.Additionally, SK Hynix, Inc. <a target="_blank" href="https://news.skhynix.com/sk-hynix-signs-investment-agreement-of-advanced-chip-packaging-with-indiana/">announced</a> a $3.87 billion plant in Indiana to produce chips for AI products. The plant is expected to create nearly 1,000 jobs by 2030.Yeo said South Korea has an interest in becoming a competing player in emerging technologies, and the US needs allies to bolster its manufacturing."Reviving US manufacturing will be one of the most important economic policy objectives, but I mean, the US cannot do it alone," Yeo said. "The US needs a kind of partner in rebuilding this manufacturing, especially in these emerging new industries and supply chains."In the past decade, South Korean companies have <a target="_blank" href="https://gov.texas.gov/uploads/files/business/SouthKorea-Profile.pdf">created</a> about 7,000 jobs in Texas and <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://iedc.in.gov/events/news/details/2024/03/04/indiana-to-promote-booming-battery-ev-ecosystems-to-industry-leaders-in-south-korea">nearly 8,000 jobs</a> in Indiana.As the US reenergizes its manufacturing industries, Biden's inflation-fighting laws include provisions excluding businesses with supply chains connected with "foreign entities of concern," like China, Yeo said, to guarantee competition."Once you get the US subsidies, you are limited in terms of your flexibility to invest in China," Yeo said.Those provisions have incentivized South Korean companies to divert from China and focus more on the US.In May, South Korea's Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy announced it committed $7 billion toward moving its supply chains away from China to further comply with US rules, according to <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.wsj.com/business/south-korea-plans-7-billion-push-to-pivot-ev-battery-industry-away-from-china-1fa1f189">The Wall Street Journal</a>.Furthermore, as high-tech products like EV batteries become a primary focus for US manufacturing, it makes business sense for South Korean companies to invest in plants directly in the US, Yeo said."These batteries, for example, are very bulky products," Yeo said, referring to EV batteries, which he said are cumbersome to ship. "So I think in the case of the battery industry, I think it also makes commercial sense to locate those factories close to the final market or end users."South Korean companies like LG and Samsung are designed to be global, Yeo said, and the US is often a target destination for large corporations.According to World Bank <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://data.worldbank.org/indicator/SP.POP.TOTL?locations=US">data</a>, the US population is above 330 million, while South Korea's population is just above 50 million."The US is the biggest market right now, and also still, the US market is considered to be very sophisticated," Yeo said. China has been and continues to be one of South Korea's largest trading partners. While this moment provides business opportunities for South Korean companies in the US, the looming geopolitical tension with China creates uncertainty."With this geopolitical tension arising between the US and China, a lot of Korean businesses who had invested in China and had big kind of China operation are really kind of being squeezed between the US and China," he said.South Korean companies are committing to the US right now, but Yeo said political uncertainty over the presidential election encourages caution for international business."Korean companies have a first-mover advantage at the moment, but now also they are facing potential risk, depending on the outcome of the November election in the US," Yeo said.Nonetheless, Yeo said these investments would likely not make business sense without the subsidies and incentives provided by the Biden Administration's focus on manufacturing."Because of this combination of all these factors you see right now," he said, "Korean investments are really flooding into the US market." Brian Kemp said Georgia will be the "electric mobility capital of the world."</li></ul>Electric vehicle investments are surging in Georgia.According to a recent Wells Fargo <a target="_blank" href="https://wellsfargo.bluematrix.com/links2/html/2379e487-7800-433a-95b9-735589c4e1a1">report</a>, Georgia has received more private investments in electric vehicle and battery manufacturing than any other state, with just over $23 billion to date.Jackie Benson, an economist at Wells Fargo, told Business Insider that the state is poised to be a hub for EVs because of its business-friendly environment, robust population growth, and federal and state incentives attracting companies to the state.Since 2022, the Peach State has added over 30,000 clean energy jobs, more than any other state, according to a June <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.ossoff.senate.gov/press-releases/new-study-inflation-reduction-act-has-created-over-30000-georgia-jobs/">study</a> by Climate Power, a strategic communications firm. This comes as federal investment in green energy is ramping up, and people are <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/wealthy-leaving-california-new-york-moving-florida-texas-reasons-effects-2024-8">flocking south</a> for a lower cost of living and better economic opportunities.<h2 id="b74fbdcb-0db7-4a0a-afa0-222558bdddc9">Investments in the Battery Belt to boost EV manufacturing and infrastructure</h2>In 2023, Gov. Brian Kemp said that Georgia would become the "electric mobility capital of the world," per the <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.ajc.com/news/georgia-is-creating-its-first-ever-climate-plan-heres-what-to-expect/RKDANAY5DBCJLHYCUXVYCUDB5Q/">Atlanta-Journal Constitution</a>. So far, it's looking promising.Georgia, Alabama, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Tennessee are a part of the Battery Belt and have received nearly $77 billion in private investment in EV battery manufacturing to date, according to an August <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.atlasevhub.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/08/2024.08_Atlas-EV-Investment-Brief.pdf">report</a> by Atlas Public Policy.It's not just southern states: Michigan leads the nation in capacity for electric vehicle battery manufacturing, but Georgia is second, according to a January <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.edf.org/media/analysis-finds-us-electric-vehicle-battery-manufacturing-track-meet-demand">report</a> by the Environmental Defense Fund, a nonprofit advocacy group.The state has also greatly benefited from federal investments in green energy and electric vehicle manufacturing and infrastructure. The Biden Administration <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.whitehouse.gov/briefing-room/statements-releases/2023/04/17/fact-sheet-biden-harris-administration-announces-new-private-and-public-sector-investments-for-affordable-electric-vehicles/">aims</a> for 50% of new vehicles in 2030 to be EVs, and investment in green energy in Georgia is partly a result of the 2021 Bipartisan Infrastructure Law and 2022 Inflation Reduction Act.The Bipartisan Infrastructure Law <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.whitehouse.gov/wp-content/uploads/2023/10/Georgia-Fact-Sheet.pdf">allocated</a> over $175 million toward the EV battery supply chain in Georgia and $135 million over five years toward infrastructure for EV charging stations in Georgia. In February, Hyundai <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.prnewswire.com/news-releases/hyundai-announces-new-production-start-date-at-metaplant-america-during-hyundai-day-in-georgia-302071754.html#:~:text=Hyundai%20Motor%20Group%20is%20investing,that%20will%20employ%203%2C500%20workers.">announced</a> over $7 billion in investment in production facilities in Georgia. The company estimates their investments in Georgia will create nearly 40,000 jobs in the state."The Hyundai investment specifically has boosted Georgia's profile in terms of EV production on the national stage," Benson said.The Inflation Reduction Act also created a $7,500 tax credit for new EVs for both consumers and businesses and incentivized efforts to boost domestic EV supply chains.In May, Kia <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.ossoff.senate.gov/press-releases/u-s-federal-manufacturing-incentives-working-for-georgia-kia-begins-ev9-production-in-west-point/">announced</a> the production of its first American-made EV at its production facility in West Point, Georgia, enabling the company to take advantage of the tax credit.Manufacturing accounts for 10% of Georgia's gross state product, which is its economic output, and construction accounts for 4%, according to Wells Fargo.Investments in EV and battery manufacturing will boost job growth and output in both of these sectors, Benson said.While government, health care, and leisure are the leading industry drivers in Georgia, investments in manufacturing are poised to boost the state's overall economic growth.<h2 id="fb9799f7-223c-4b7b-9f9e-5b994c7dac21">Georgia transplants are helping fuel economic growth in the state</h2>Georgia's real GDP outpaced the nation in the first quarter of the year, at 2.3% and 1.4%, respectively. In seven of the last 10 years, the state's GDP has outpaced the national average, according to Wells Fargo.Strong population growth remains a tailwind for Georgia's economic growth and EV industry, Benson said.Between 2021 and 2022, there were 327,795 people who moved into Georgia, according to data from the Census Bureau. The Peach State had the fifth most new residents during that time, following Florida, Texas, California, and North Carolina.New state residents means more consumers at stores, more homebuyers and renters, and more demand for goods in Georgia, fueling economic activity.Among those people who moved from another US state into Georgia, nearly 26,000 came from California, and more than 23,000 from both Texas and North Carolina, according to data from the Census Bureau.The biggest influx of new residents in Georgia came from outside the US. Between 2021 and 2022, just over 60,000 people from abroad moved to Georgia, per Census Bureau data.Benson said single-family construction has recently scaled up in the state, in line with its robust population growth.Benson said the scale-up in single-family construction has helped shore up construction employment. The three-month moving average for job growth in construction in the state was up 0.1% year-over-year in July, the report noted.Unemployment in Georgia remains below the national average and is only 40 basis points higher than its historic low in 2022, Benson said."Nationwide, we're seeing builders pull back on single-family construction for multiple reasons," Benson said.
