Instead, they're strategically using these simple products as gateways into the world of luxury goods.</p><div type="image" title="aesop resurrection hand wash on a dark bacground" height="1093" width="1800" msid="114773494" hostid="261" sizebytes="57054"></div><h2 id="0d70df1e-0a7d-456a-bead-61dabad491c1">The appeal of super-expensive suds</h2><p>Emma, a 23-year-old perfumery student and <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.tiktok.com/@perfumerism">content creator</a>, first dipped her hands into expensive soap while shopping for Dior products in Montreal.</p><p>"I remember wanting to bring something home, but I didn't want to spend so much money," she told Business Insider.</p><p>On a whim, she purchased a green liquid soap called Lucky, which she felt had an "entry-level pricepoint" for a Dior item. A bottle costs <a target="_blank" href="https://affiliate.insider.com?h=3ec0a81970df181337fa151cd2b7872aba4a35eefce5d675274e604f5dfe476a&amp;postID=66f315268d7e7259bc9436bc&amp;postSlug=expensive-hand-soap-gateway-luxury-shopping-2024-10&amp;site=bi&amp;u=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.dior.com%2Fen_us%2Fbeauty%2Fproducts%2Flucky-Y0996433.html">$70</a>.</p><p>Emma loved it instantly, especially since friends regularly complimented the soap whenever they used her bathroom.</p><p>Once the bottle was emptied a few weeks later, Emma said she and her friends asked each other: "OK, what are we going to try next?"</p><div type="image" title="dior" height="715" width="1040" msid="114773493" hostid="261" sizebytes="45750"></div><p>Emma represents the larger group of soap superfans who have bought into the sudsy craze.</p><p>Searching "luxury soap" on TikTok results in countless videos — many of which have <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.tiktok.com/@benneiley/video/7192370650214878510?is_from_webapp=1&amp;sender_device=pc&amp;web_id=7394903114639590955">over one million views</a> — detailing the best high-end cleansers and citing soaps like those from Aesop as some of the <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.tiktok.com/@thekimberlyfoo/video/7404272860811758878?is_from_webapp=1&amp;sender_device=pc&amp;web_id=7394903114639590955">best gift options</a> on the market.</p> <p>Expensive soaps aren't exactly a new craze. Luxe hotels, spas, and gyms have been stocking them in bathrooms for decades. Still, the industry has exploded in recent years. Consumers began buying designer soap for their homes more widely in the late 2010s, and in 2018, the global market for bath soap was valued at <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/news/stocks/global-19-5-billion-bath-soap-market-2011-2018-2019-2024-p-g-is-the-largest-player-followed-by-unilever-and-colgate-palmolive-1027969276">$19.5 billion</a>.</p><p>The industry just keeps growing. A <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.expertmarketresearch.com/pressrelease/bath-soap-market">2024 report</a> by<strong> </strong><a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.expertmarketresearch.com/pressrelease/bath-soap-market">Expert Market Research</a> said the global soap market could reach over $36 billion in revenue by 2032, and luxury soap products are partially to thank.</p><p>The report cites the development of high-end soaps and millennial shoppers with rising disposable incomes as factors in the growing industry.</p><h2 id="0bfc6ee9-2746-4abc-9b4e-8831542e47bd"><strong>Washing dollars down the drain or elevating hand washing?</strong></h2><p>Since buying her first luxury cleanser in 2023, Emma has tried close to a dozen expensive hand soaps and reviewed them on TikTok for her 507,000 followers. Her <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.tiktok.com/@perfumerism/video/7259173950092053766?is_from_webapp=1&amp;sender_device=pc&amp;web_id=7394903114639590955">most popular video,</a> which was posted in July 2023 and highlights her favorites, has gotten more than 272,000 views as of Tuesday.</p><p>Emma told BI that her ultimate goal is to find one luxury soap, preferably one with a fancy bottle and long-lasting scent, to be her home's signature.</p><p>"I tried one Malin + Goetz soap, but the packaging wasn't for me or my personal aesthetic. So I wrote it off a little because of that," she said of the stark white plastic bottle decorated with an expansive ingredient list. "I have to like how a soap bottle looks. It has to be a flex in my room."</p><p>Veteran cosmetic chemist and <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://beautystat.com/pages/about-us?">BeautyStat</a> founder Ron Robinson said Emma's focus on scent and aesthetics is common in his experience. He told BI that he's noticed a rising interest in luxury soaps partly because they are "affordable luxury" and because of their reusable packaging, which adds a sustainability element.</p><p>Whereas Loewe's most coveted bags vary by season and can cost up to $11,000 each, the brand's soap costs $80 at most and can be used all year round.</p><p><a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.tiktok.com/@sommyyah">Sommyyah Awan</a>, 32, a content creator from Toronto, realized this while in college.</p><div type="image" title="A Byredo store in London, England." height="1168" width="1756" msid="114773490" hostid="261" sizebytes="285998"></div><p>"My budget was small because I was a student, but I felt that a luxury soap was a way for me to dip my toes into this world that I wanted to be part of," she told BI.</p><p>Now, luxe soaps are a staple of her home. Byredo's <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.byredo.com/us_en/body-care/hand-care/hand-wash/">$70</a> bottles and Jo Malone London's <a target="_blank" href="https://affiliate.insider.com?h=a37e5fc34012efda8ae118cd2738c4f79b98a91615c2b68b0ff3138f5e65e858&amp;postID=66f315268d7e7259bc9436bc&amp;postSlug=expensive-hand-soap-gateway-luxury-shopping-2024-10&amp;site=bi&amp;u=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.jomalone.com%2Fproduct%2F25956%2F118182%2Fbath-body%2Fmyrrh-tonka-body-hand-wash%3Fsize%3D250ml">$65</a> soaps are <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.tiktok.com/@sommyyah/video/7352975396880567594">her favorites</a>.</p><p>"You're just washing your hands. It's a simple act," she said. "But to do it with a soap that smells wonderful, lathers beautifully, and comes in an aesthetically pleasing bottle — it's just a way to elevate an everyday experience."</p><p>Expensive soap is also a luxury that can be shared, unlike designer accessories, which are often worn by one and admired by others.</p><p>"There's a community element to luxury soap," Emma told BI. "It feels like I'm not just doing it for me. I'm doing it to enjoy with my roommates. It becomes a point of conversation."</p><p>So yes, buying luxury soap might seem to some like you're washing money down the drain. To others, the pricey products are a step toward luxury.</p>

New Delhi, <keyword id="198245" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="wipro-consumer" source="Orion">Wipro Consumer</keyword> Care and Lighting on Tuesday announced the acquisition of three soap brands, Jo, Doy, and Bacter Shield, from VVF (India) Ltd for an undisclosed amount, a move that will help the company expand in the personal wash segment. This is the third acquisition by <keyword id="10862" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="wipro" source="Orion">Wipro</keyword> Consumer Care and Lighting, part of Azim Premji-led Wipro Enterprises, within the last 12 months and the 15th acquisition so far, as it is aggressively expanding its portfolio. <br /><br /> "The acquisition will be a strategic expansion for Wipro in the personal wash segment," said a statement from Wipro Consumer, which is among the leading players in the segment with sandalwood soap brand Santoor and female toiletries brand Enchanteur. <br /><br /> Jo toilet soap has a presence in North, East and West markets, Doy operates in the premium segment with differentiated positioning, and Bacter Shield has an antibacterial range of soaps and handwash. <br /><br /> "These brands together recorded a revenue of over Rs 210 crore during FY23," it said. <br /><br /> In FY23, Wipro's Santoor had become the second largest player in the segment in India with sales of over Rs 2,650 crore while Enchanteur has also crossed the 1,000 crore mark. <br /><br /> Earlier, Wipro Consumer Care, which has ambitions to become a formidable player in the fast-growing Indian food market, had acquired Nirapara and Brahmins. <br /><br /> Vineet Agrawal, CEO of Wipro Consumer Care and Lighting, said these brands complement the existing portfolio and will give a stronger foothold in the key markets. <br /><br /> "With a diverse array of brands and Wipro's robust distribution network, we are positioned to fortify our market presence and propel growth," said Agrawal, who is also Managing Director of Wipro Enterprises. <br /><br /> "The divestment of Jo, Doy, and Bacter Shield to Wipro aligns with our focus on optimising our portfolio and underscores our confidence in Wipro's ability to nurture and elevate these brands," VVF (India) (Earlier known as Vegetable Vitamins Foods Co) Chairman and Managing Director Rustom Godrej Joshi said. <br /><br /> Wipro Consumer Care and Lighting has crossed the milestone of Rs 10,000 crore in overall sales in FY23.

Wipro Consumer acquires 3 soap brands Jo, Doy and Bacter Shield from VVF

<ul class="summary-list"><li>"Baby Reindeer" gripped audiences with the true story of a woman stalking an aspiring comedian. </li><li>Some viewers tried to identify the real-life stalker by hunting for her on social media.</li></ul><p>Netflix's "<a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/baby-reindeer-ending-explained-writer-stalked-real-life-true-martha-2024-4">Baby Reindeer</a>" gripped audiences with the story of Donny Dunn, an aspiring comedian who is stalked by a woman after he shows her a moment of kindness in the pub where he works.</p><p>The series, which is based on the real-life experiences of its writer and lead actor, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/baby-reindeer-stalker-real-martha-scott-fiona-harvey-piers-morgan-2024-5">Richard Gadd</a>, was met with rave reviews for its honest depiction of stalking and abuse, earning a 98% score on <a target="_blank" href="https://www.rottentomatoes.com/tv/baby_reindeer">Rotten Tomatoes</a>.</p><p>It's ironic, then, that viewers responded to a show about the psychological trauma of stalking by becoming armchair detectives as they tried to find both his real-life stalker and abuser, whose identities the show's makers said they tried to conceal.</p><p>According to <a target="_blank" href="https://trends.google.com/trends/explore?date=today%201-m&amp;geo=US&amp;q=baby%20reindeer&amp;hl=en">Google Trends</a>, among the top searches related to "Baby Reindeer" since the show was released in April were "Baby Reindeer real Martha" and the name of the woman fans think the stalker character is based on, as well as the identity of the man who abused Gadd.</p><p>The fervor with which viewers were trying to hunt the pair down led a woman, who claimed to be the real Martha Scott, to consider<a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/baby-reindeer-real-stalker-considering-legal-action-against-richard-gadd-2024-4"> legal action against Netflix and Gadd</a>. The unnamed woman told the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.dailymail.co.uk/femail/article-13355135/truth-comedian-female-stalker-gripped-world-Netflix-Baby-Reindeer-fame-fortune.html">Daily Mail</a> last month that she has received "death threats and abuse from Richard Gadd supporters."</p><p>She said: "I'm the victim. He's written a bloody show about me."</p><p>Since then, broadcaster Piers Morgan has interviewed a woman named Fiona Harvey — who appears to be the same person the Daily Mail spoke to — promising to "set the record straight." The interview will air on Thursday.</p><p>TikTok sleuths also harassed <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/baby-reindeer-real-people-martha-darrien-stop-speculating-2024-4">Sean Foley</a>, a British writer, comedian, and actor whom Gadd had worked with in the past, accusing him of being the star's abuser. Foley was forced to go to the police, and Gadd defended him, asking people not to speculate about the real identities of the people in the show.</p> <p>This isn't the first time the public has reacted to true crime series and even ongoing police investigations in this way.</p><p>In January 2023, for example, social media was rife with speculation after British woman Nicola Bulley went missing in suspicious circumstances, with some even trespassing on private property as they tried to investigate her disappearance.</p><p><a target="_blank" href="https://www.mirror.co.uk/news/uk-news/nicola-bulleys-disappearance-amateur-tiktok-31912951">The Mirror</a> reported Lancashire's Police and Crime Commissioner Andrew Snowden said the force "lost control of the narrative" because of conspiracy theorists. The authorities even issued dispersal notices to members of the public trying to stage their own investigations in February 2023.</p><h2 id="4473a89b-156b-4ea5-b23e-f2dbeb55297e"><strong>True crime blurs the line between real life and fiction</strong></h2><div type="image" title="Richard Gadd as Donny Dunn in &quot;Baby Reindeer.&quot;" height="1592" width="2123" msid="109988681" hostid="261"></div><p>Dr. Ruth Tully, a UK-based forensic psychologist who specializes in assessing and treating sexual and violent offenders, told Business Insider that true crime blurs the line between entertainment and real life, with audiences consuming the content in the same way they'd watch a soap opera or a drama.</p><p>That's further complicated by some true crime audiences thinking they are helping to bring about justice by becoming armchair detectives.</p><p>Tully said: "It can be extremely harmful, and I think it's easy to forget that because we are understandably engaged and wrapped up in what is an interesting storyline, an interesting case, and I think it's driven from a good place. People don't like injustice, and it's good to act on injustice in many circumstances."</p><p>Gorging on true crime can also be a way for some audiences, particularly women, to learn how to stay safe, according to Tulley.</p><p>"The theory is that through understanding perpetrator's behaviors and also victim behaviors, there's a principle that we might be better able to keep ourselves safe because we feel that we understand criminal behavior better. So that's one principle," she said.</p><p>In a piece published by <a target="_blank" href="https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2023/jul/05/women-love-true-crime-podcasts-theory-serial-online-dating">The Guardian</a>, titled "Why do women love true crime so much?" journalist Nancy Jo Sales suggested: "Women who date in the digital age have become online detectives to keep true crimes from happening to them."</p><p>For those with less honorable motives, Tully said that the separation between real life and social media makes the transition to armchair detective and harasser easier, especially when people can easily make fake accounts.</p><p>"What we do tend to find is with social media, people do feel like there's an element of anonymity because they might not have the true profile up, for example. So they feel that there'll be no consequences, and this might not be an active consideration at the time," she said.</p><p>"This isn't in-the-moment thinking. They don't necessarily think these things through like, 'Oh wow, they're not going to catch me' because it feels safer to them," she added.</p><p>According to a 2023 study published in the <a target="_blank" href="https://link.springer.com/article/10.1007/s10610-023-09542-0">European Journal of Criminal Policy and Research</a> on anonymous online harassment faced by influencers, harassers find strength in numbers. Numerous people harassing an individual "can lead to a diffusion of responsibility and moral disengagement among the harassers," its authors wrote.</p><h2 id="dc4f1ae4-1963-41ee-a09c-7b79bacd6792"><strong>Netflix says it's difficult to control what viewers do</strong></h2><div type="image" title="Jessica Gunning as Martha Scott in &quot;Baby Reindeer.&quot;" height="2000" width="2667" msid="109988682" hostid="261"></div><p>This raises the question of whether streaming services and TV networks are doing enough to protect those involved in true crime content. How they would do this remains unclear.</p><p>In the case of "Baby Reindeer," Gadd said the team changed the characters enough to protect their real-life counterparts, but viewers were still able to find social media posts from a woman who fitted Martha's description.</p><p>It's unclear what steps Netflix took to protect the identity of those depicted in the show, including whether they contacted the stalker.</p><p>At a <a target="_blank" href="https://parliamentlive.tv/event/index/6fba870f-84fa-4bc5-a25c-7373979e4cca">UK parliamentary hearing</a> on Wednesday about British film and TV, Netflix policy chief Benjamin King said that the streamer took "every reasonable precaution" to disguise the identities of the real people involved.</p><p>However, he did not take responsibility for the harassment that took place after subscribers watched the show.</p><p>"Ultimately, it's obviously very difficult to control what viewers do, particularly in a world where everything is amplified by social media," King said.</p><p>Netflix previously came under fire for depicting the family of Errol Lindsay, one of Jeffrey Dahmer's victims, in the 2023 series "Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story." Lindsay's sister, Rita Isbell, criticized Netflix <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/rita-isbell-sister-jeffrey-dahmer-victim-talks-about-netflix-show-2022-9">in an essay for Business Insider</a> for not consulting with her or her family.</p><p>"I was never contacted about the show. I feel like Netflix should've asked if we mind or how we felt about making it. They didn't ask me anything. They just did it," she wrote at the time.</p><p>But regardless of how Netflix handles working with the real people involved in its true crime content, the responsibility to not harass people online over lies with the audience themselves, Tully said.</p><p>"It's a common sense decision that to track someone down and hound them might be harmful," she said.</p>

Hawkins asked for a jury trial.</span></p><p><span>Hawkins - who starred on the soap opera "Ryan's Hope" from 1975 to 1976 - pointed to a <a href="http://www.interviewmagazine.com/film/christian-slater/#_" target="_blank">December 2015 interview</a> in which Slater said Hawkins is<span> <span>"</span><span>a manic-depressive schizophrenic."</span></span></span></p><p><span><span>The 80-year-old actor argues that Christian doesn't have the medical degree or knowledge to diagnose mental illnesses. Christian Slater is being sued by his father for $20 million in damages

<p>If you have a lot of money, you can spend it on <em>everything</em> you want.</p>
<p>But here, now, I'm going to outline an argument I make to unlucky friends and acquaintances on a regular basis: Some things really just are not worth it. </p>
<p>These items are beautifully packaged and generally smell or feel great, which is how retailers are able to justify a $50-plus price tag, and lifestyle bloggers can vow that they're never without their $35 Jo Malone travel candle.</p>
<p>I can't help rolling my eyes when I see people buy: </p>
<h3>1. Scented candles</h3>
<p>No, that Jo Malone example above wasn't randomly chosen.</p>
<p>For the examples used in this rant - er, article - I simply Googled "buy [product]" or went straight to a favorite destination (hi, Pottery Barn).</p>
<p>The candle in the below picture is an 11-ounce, <a href="http://www.toryburch.com/fragrance-collection-white-tile-print-candle/59KM01.html">$60 scented candle from Tory Burch</a>. That's $5.45 an ounce. Of wax. To set on fire.</p>
<p><strong>I'd rather ...</strong> wait for the inevitable scented candle gift from someone I don't know all that well. There's always the one. <p>If the frame is actual silver and you're giving it to your boss' daughter for her wedding, I guess I get it. But $99 for a <a href="http://www.williams-sonoma.com/products/revised-brass-bordered-stone-picture-frame/?pkey=e%7Cpicture%2Bframes%7C10%7Cbest%7C4293864709%7C1%7C24%7C%7C4&amp;cm_src=PRODUCTSEARCH%7C%7CCategory-_-D%C3%A9cor-_-NoMerchRules&amp;bnrid=3117500&amp;cm_ven=AfCmtyCont&amp;cm_cat=Polyvore&amp;cm_pla=CJ&amp;cm_ite=Std">4x6 Williams Sonoma frame</a> like the one in the below picture? No thanks - I can see photos on my (exorbitantly expensive) phone.</p>
<p><strong>I'd rather ...</strong> go to <a href="http://www.ikea.com/us/en/search/?query=picture+frames">IKEA</a>, for the cheapest picture frames I've found yet. You don't even have to assemble them.</p>

<p>Mirrors are picture frames hopped up on viewers' vanity. You could pay a few thousand dollars for the mirror of my dreams at <a href="http://www.restorationhardware.com/catalog/product/product.jsp?productId=prod2710865&amp;categoryId=cat2730007">Restoration Hardware</a>, or an also-painful $325 for the mirror in the picture above, from purveyor of fine goods <a href="http://www.bedbathandbeyond.com/1/1/122680-jeffan-rosario-large-wood-mirror.html">Bed, Bath, and Beyond</a>.</p>
<p><strong>I'd rather ...</strong> wait for a 25% off sale with free shipping, or take a trip over to <a href="http://www.target.com/s?searchTerm=mirror&amp;category=0%7CAll%7Cmatchallpartial%7Call+categories&amp;lnk=snav_sbox_mirror">Target's</a> delightfully priced homewares department.</p>
<h3>4. Baskets</h3>
<p>I love baskets as much as anyone else. They're everything a person needs: easy, multipurpose storage in neutral colors that go anywhere. That said, I'm not paying <a href="http://www.potterybarn.com/products/jacquelyne-rattan-wood-handled-baskets/">Pottery Barn $79</a> for somewhere to put my semi-overpriced throws.</p>
<p><strong>I'd rather ...</strong> go to <a href="http://www.michaels.com/search?q=baskets">Michael's</a>, where I've found reasonably priced, reasonably charming baskets in the past.</p>
<h3>5. Trays</h3>
<p>How can you have an attractive coffee table or nightstand without a tray? Really though, trays are desperately fashionable and priced for their desirability. The one in the picture above is a double whammy: a tray/basket hybrid from <a href="http://www.potterybarn.com/products/daytrip-tanner-baskets/">Pottery Barn</a> that costs $69 to keep your unread magazines from falling on the floor.</p>
<p><strong>I'd rather ...</strong> stick around <a href="http://www.target.com/s?searchTerm=tray&amp;category=0%7CAll%7Cmatchallpartial%7Call+categories&amp;lnk=snav_sbox_tray">Target</a> for another half an hour (ok, yes, hour - need to scope out the linens).</p>
<h3>6. Pillows</h3>
<p>Pillows are out of control, and not in a movie-montage, pillow-fight way. If you hit someone in the face with a <a href="http://www.barneys.com/on/demandware.store/Sites-BNY-Site/default/Product-Show?pid=00505035764311&amp;utm_source=Hy3bqNL2jtQ&amp;utm_medium=affiliate&amp;siteID=Hy3bqNL2jtQ-0YztFkdRQ2Ey6k6lpXi0vg">$450 pillow from Barney's</a>, I wouldn't be at all surprised if its owner retaliated with a <a href="http://www.barneys.com/on/demandware.store/Sites-BNY-Site/default/Product-Show?pid=00505032847604&amp;q=tray&amp;index=3">$1,600 tray</a>. Don't worry, it's "wipe clean."</p>
<p><strong>I'd rather ...</strong> wait for clearance or a major promotion. I know that's not an ideal situation, as it requires patience (yuck), but decorative pillows that are regularly priced in the uncomfortable $40-$60 can go on sale for $20-$30 - which still seems like too much for something your dog may or may not destroy before you get home, but can at least be mentally justified. If you're really set on that $450 pillow, though, you might be out of luck.</p>
<h3>7. Soap</h3>
<p>If you've ever had decorative soap, you know it's a dust-magnet that loses its adorable stamps and molds within the first three times you get it wet. Plus, it's a dilemma for guests who don't know if <a href="http://www.crabtree-evelyn.com/collections/verbena-and-lavender-de-provence/conditioning-body-bar/81073.html">$10 Crabtree and Evelyn</a> soap (pictured above) is meant to be useful or decorative - because seriously, it can't be both.</p>
<p><strong>I'd rather ...</strong> go to CVS and buy a six-month supply for $5. Guests: It's not decorative.</p>
<p>Have I ever caved, paid $200 for a mirror, and then watched my own contemptuous eye roll in said mirror? You bet I have. That's the problem right there, and I'm a part of it - these things only cost so much because we keep paying the prices.</p>
