And now, he is all set to become a student in the university he worked for. The 34-year old <keyword id="7882580" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="jnu-guard">JNU guard</keyword> has now set his eyes on UPSC Civil Services Examination. The old charges for single and double rooms were ₹20 and ₹10, respectively. The move comes in the back of the ongoing protests by university students who were rallying against the fee hike, dress code and hostel curfews that the top university has now mandated. However, the student union has called the move a ‘trap’ and they continue to protest. The university administration had <a href="https://www.news18.com/news/india/jnu-students-say-academic-emergency-at-varsity-demand-vcs-removal-as-teachers-extend-support-2382953.html">hiked</a> the hostel mess security fee from ₹5,500 to ₹12,000, adding a service charge worth ₹1,700. Added to this, hostel curfews and a dress code also did not resonate well with the students. The university mandated 11 pm as a curfew for hostel students. "While we were paying ₹2,500 a month earlier, we will now have to pay ₹7,000. JNU announces a partial rollback in hostel fee hikes amid massive protests

 The university administration <a href="https://www.news18.com/news/india/jnu-students-say-academic-emergency-at-varsity-demand-vcs-removal-as-teachers-extend-support-2382953.html">hiked</a> the hostel mess security fee from ₹5,500 to ₹12,000, adding a service charge worth ₹1,700. It also increased the charges of a single room from ₹20 to ₹600 per month and to ₹300 for a double bed room which is to be shared. That accounts for an annual fee hike of almost ₹3,000 per student. That is a pain point for university students where “majority of students come from the most marginalized backgrounds in this country,” News18 <a href="https://www.news18.com/news/india/jnu-students-say-academic-emergency-at-varsity-demand-vcs-removal-as-teachers-extend-support-2382953.html">reported</a>. Added to this, hostel curfews and a dress code also did not resonate well with the students. The protest coincides with the institute’s third convocation ceremony. The student body called for a boycott as they demand a rollback of the rules and the fee hike. They also intend to marching towards the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) in Vasant Kunj, Delhi. Delhi police used water cannons to disperse the students as they tried to cross the barricades to meet the vice chancellor M Jagadesh Kumar. The VC repeatedly rejected the request to meet and discuss the issues.

JNU administration hikes the hostel, mess and security fee by close to 400%

Meet <keyword id="3877859" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="subashini-sankaran">Subashini Sankaran</keyword>, the first <keyword id="244095" type="POSITION" weightage="20" keywordseo="woman-IPS-officer">woman IPS officer</keyword> to take charge of the security of a Chief Minister. She is guarding Sarbananda Sonowa, the Chief Minister of Assam, India's largest state in northeastern India dealing with not only law and order problems and counter-insurgency, but also communal strife, smuggling, poaching and several such issues. 
 
To be working for the CM of a difficult region is no mean feat. Moreover, ensuring the security of a state's CM is a job with zero tolerance for error. Sankaran is responsible for planning the routes of the CM's travel. She also coordinates with the teams that provide close proximity protection and briefs security personnel. It is a stressful job and her work day often extends to 18 hours. Over everything else, she is an Indian woman breaking stereotypes by leading from the front. 
 
“It was a new thing for everybody, but people slowly adapted to being comfortable about having a lady police officer as the chief minister’s head of security,” Subashini told News18. 
 
Suhasini's journey: From a sociology graduate to taking charge of a CM's security 
 
Hailing from an educated middle-class family, she belongs to Tamil Nadu’s Thanjavur district. She, however, moved to Mumbai in the 1980s with her parents. 
 
After doing her schooling in Mumbai and finishing her graduation in Sociology from St. Xavier’s College, she joined Jawaharlal Nehru University in New Delhi to pursue her Masters and M. Phil. She wrote her dissertation on women and terrorism, focusing on the suicide bomber squads of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam. It gave her an insight into the broader political and sociological situation in India and a nuanced understanding of law and order issues. 
 While in <keyword id="6356383" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="JNU">JNU</keyword>, Subashini started preparing for the UPSC exams. In 2010, Subashini cracked the UPSC Mains examination with rank 243. She went to Hyderabad for her Police Academy training and was finally stationed in Assam. Here, she learnt the basics of Indian policing, handling the physical and mental demands that accompany being a law enforcement officer. 
 
No other member of her family has ever worked for the police; her father was employed in the industrial safety department of a private company, her mother is a homemaker and her sister an entrepreneur in the United States. 
 
Before her current appointment, she worked as an Assistant Superintendent of Police in Azara Police Station in Guwahati. Next, she was transferred to Biswanath District, followed by stints in Silchar and Tezpur as Additional Superintendent. While in Biswanath Chariali, Subashini and her team busted a rhino–poaching ring operating out of nearby Kaziranga. 
 
She has an advice for police officers, something she learnt on the job - “Talk when necessary, take firm action when necessary. Lawfully, of course.”

"In order to stop the widespread burning of plastic in these villages, we decide to educate the community on the health hazards of burning plastic,” Parmita Sarma, founder of the school and a social worker at Tata Institute of Social Sciences told The Times of India. Established in 2016 by a couple — Mazin Mukhtar and Parmita Sarma — the school aims to recycle the waste plastic products and use it to develop their building. In fact, the school has its own recycling unit and students process the waste items to produce environment-friendly ecological bricks. Akshar Forum School has nearly 110 students, all from the nearby slums. The government too intends to spread awareness against plastic from schools. “Banning bottles, wrappers, packaging, bags, cups, plates, tumblers made of plastic or polystyrene on school premises and in school canteen, and encouraging the use of alternative biodegradable products will help sensitize students about the ills of using plastic,” noted a Central Board of Secondary Education <a href="https://www.sentinelassam.com/top-headlines/plastic-ban-turns-into-a-farce-in-assam/">(CBSE) circular</a> from 2018.
