SGX Nifty, an early indicator of how the markets may perform, was down 0.08% or 14 points early in the morning today. Earlier on Friday, both the benchmark indices closed in the green led by financial services and auto stocks, capping off a week of volatile movements. While the 30-stock Sensex closes 2.42% up in the last week, the 50-stock Nifty50 gained 1%. “Indian markets could open flat, in line with mixed Asian markets today and despite lower US markets on Friday,” said Deepak Jasani, head of retail research at HDFC securities. Global markets tumble on strong jobs data in the US Markets in the US and Asia tumbled on strong jobs and other economic data in the US. Heightened geopolitical concerns between the US and China also made markets in Asia jittery, after the US downed an alleged Chinese spy balloon. Strong jobs data in the US sparked concerns of interest rate hikes by the Fed. The Dow Jones Industrial Average declined 0.38%, while the S&amp;P 500 declined 1.04%. The tech-heavy Nasdaq declined 1.59%. In Asia, markets declined amid concerns of rate hikes continuing further amid strong jobs data in the US and elsewhere. While the Hang Seng index declined 2%, the Taiwan Weighted index fell 1.08% and Shanghai Composite was down 0.6%. On the other hand, Nikkei 225 was up 1.07%. <keyword id="73648" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="stocks-to-watch" source="Orion">Stocks to watch</keyword> State Bank of India: The lender reported 68% on year surge in net profit for December quarter at ₹14,205 crore owing to lower provisions and higher interest income. It is the bank’s highest ever quarterly net profit. ITC: The FMCG to cigarette conglomerate reported 21% on year rise in net profit to ₹5,031 crore for December quarter while revenue rose 2.3% to ₹16,226 crore aided by cigarettes, FMCG, hotels and paper segments. Meanwhile, operating margin expanded 620 basis points from last year. Vodafone Idea: The centre has approved the conversion of the telecom operator’s dues linked to interest on spectrum and adjusted grow revenue (ADR) worth ₹16,133 crore into equity. With this, the government owns 35.8% stake in the company becoming the largest shareholder. Adani Enterprises, Adani Ports, Ambuja Cements: NSE and BSE have put all three companies under its short term additional surveillance measure frameworks from today February 6. Tata Power: The company reported 91% on year growth in consolidated net profit at ₹1,052 crore for December quarter while revenue grew 30% on year to ₹14,339 crore. One 97 Communications (Paytm): The fintech company narrowed its net loss to ₹392 crore as against ₹778 crore last year while revenue grew 42% on year to ₹2,062 crore for December quarter. InterGlobe Aviation: After three consecutive loss making quarters, Indigo's profit has risen to ₹1,422 crore for Q3 FY23 as against ₹129 crore last year. 'Harry Potter' stars James and Oliver Phelps didn't know which Weasley twin they were playing until right before filming the first movie

New Delhi, Feb 1 () Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman's major announcements on infrastructure as well as logistics sector will create rural demand and boost employment opportunities, Cement Manufacturers Association (CMA) said on Saturday.
 Priorities given to household, roads, railways, economic corridors, solar power, accelerated development of highways should help boost development and wealth creation besides reviving cement demand, CMA said in a release.
"The emphasis on highways and roads development is well placed. This captures the priorities of economic development and an aspirational India. We would hope that rural demand gets revived and it assists in job creation," said Cement Manufacturers Association President Mahendra Singhi.
Over the national logistics policy, he said CMA is already engaged in a dialogue with the government on this.
"We are actively engaged in a dialogue with the Ministry of Commerce on the National Logistics Policy and would expect some of our considerations for upgradation and modernisation of rail infrastructure are particularly carried through," Singhi added.
While presenting the Budget for 2020-21, Sitharaman said a national logistics policy will be released soon which will set up a single window e-logistics market and focus on employment generation and making MSMEs competitive.
"We would look forward to these taking shape. The reaffirmation of commitment towards clean air, climate change mitigation efforts are most welcome. More policy interventions to revive real estate and housing would be welcome. Infrastructure development, new 100 airports and emphasis on road would go a long way to revive cement demand", Singhi said.
CMA is the apex representative body of large cement manufacturers in India. 
CMA Vice President Neeraj Akhoury said focus on project preparation facilities for infrastructure projects and the national logistics policy that will be released soon should help boost infrastructure and have a positive impact on the economy.
"Priorities given to household, roads, railways, economic corridors, solar power, accelerated development of highways should help boost development and wealth creation. The cement industry is committed towards playing a strong role in the government's aspirational agenda for transformative economic growth," he said.
Dalmia Bharat Group Managing Director Puneet Dalmia said budget has focused on rejuvenating economic growth and the government has taken focused steps.

New Delhi, May 12 () Top companies across sectors - automobile maker Maruti Suzuki, consumer electronics giant Samsung to IT giant Infosys - have reopened factories and offices as India took its first steps towards resuming economic activity after weeks under a near-total coronavirus lockdown. While the government has allowed businesses to resume under strict guidelines, companies are not rushing to achieve pre-COVID-19 run-rates and instead are calibrating staff strength as they are aware that any incident of infection can prove costly. Companies said employee safety and workplace hygiene is the prime focus. While Maruti resumed operations at its Manesar plant in Haryana on Tuesday, Infosys opened offices in some cities with up to 5 per cent staff and plans to gradually raise employee strength to 40 per cent. Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) has less than 1 per cent of its employees currently in India offices. Mahindra &amp; Mahindra too started operations at its factories with a limited number of workers. Flipkart, Panasonic India, Whirlpool and Dabur are among a host of companies that have put in place plans to restart operations with a small section of staff. Tata group-owned jewellery brand Tanishq has announced its plans to reopen its 328 stores across the country in a phased manner. The government imposed a nationwide lockdown on March 25, and it has already been extended twice -- first until May 3 and then again until May 17. However, some curbs have been eased beginning April 20 with permission being given to industries in rural areas to restart. Later, production, sale and transport of goods in areas where virus cases are less severe have also been allowed. However, the process of restarting factories and businesses is likely to be protracted, with production only gradually ramping up towards operational capacity levels. IHS Markit said although the limited restart of some industries has been permitted since April 20, India will still suffer severe disruptions to its industrial output due to the protracted lockdown. "The Indian economy is facing a recession in the 2020-21 financial year for the first time since 1979-80, during the second OPEC oil crisis shock," IHS Markit said. "Consequently, IHS Markit expects the lockdown measures to result in a contraction of Indian industrial production in the 2020-21 financial year." But several companies across sectors ranging from textiles to consumer electronics and liquor to pharma have partially resumed operations after getting permission from local authorities. While Panasonic India and South Asia President &amp; CEO Manish Sharma said the company plans to start operations at its factory with 30 per cent capacity and slowly take it up to 50 per cent in a month's time, Samsung Electronics India said its Noida factory has started limited operations. The Noida factory of Dixon Technologies too has resumed operations. The firm's Tirupati and Dehradun plants too have started operations at about one-third capacity, which will be scaled up to 75-80 per cent in the next one week, said Sunil Vachani, Chairman, Dixon Technologies. Neeraj Bahl, the CEO of BSH Home Appliances -- German company which manufactures and sells under Bosch and Siemens brands in India -- said the firm is in process of starting production in its Tamil Nadu factory with limited staff. Mahendra Singhi, President, Cement Manufacturers Association (CMA), said 25-30 per cent of cement production capacity in the country has resumed. JK Lakshmi Cement director Shailendra Chouksey said the firm has clearances to operate all its seven plants in five states with reduced staff strength and following government's COVID-19 guidelines for factories. "However, these measures alone shall not suffice. Unless construction is allowed rather encouraged to resume operations", the sector outlook would not be very good, he said. Consumer Electronics and Appliances Manufacturers Association (CEAMA) president Kamal Nandi said slowly retail operations are opening up in green and orange zones. "Roughly industry's 30-35 per cent outlets are open throughout the country though geographically not equally distributed." "We have also got permission to open factories in green and orange zones. Most of the brands are preparing to resume operations. Some brands started last week and some would start from this week. Even more important, the supplier's plant is opening up and we are all preparing to resume operations and slowly production would start," he said. There is still no pressing need for the brands to go ahead and start mass production from day one as there is a lot of inventory in warehouses and with dealers, he added. Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM) director-general Rajesh Menon said the auto sector lost over Rs 90,000 crore in revenue due to the lockdown. Ashok Leyland MD &amp; CEO Vipin Sondhi said these are truly unprecedented times, and the government and industry need to work closely to bring the industry back on its feet. Sensex and Nifty are moving between gains and losses today

The <keyword id="6354813" type="COMPANY" weightage="80" keywordseo="nifty">Nifty</keyword> remained under selling pressure in early deals on Wednesday as weak Asian markets exerted their negative influence on <keyword id="6355178" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="80" keywordseo="Dalal-Street">Dalal Street</keyword> and the rate cut by China went unappreciated on Indian shores. 
 Trade will be choppy today as <keyword id="6354298" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="80" keywordseo="stocks">stocks</keyword> approach the monthly end of futures and options expiry on Thursday. 
 
The Nifty fell 10 points to 7,870 in initial trades, recovering from a low of 7,793. As a consequence, the Advance-Decline ration was 18/32. Vedanta, BHEL, Ambuja Cement, Dr. Reddy's and Hero Motors were the top five losers on the Index while Tata Power, Wipro, ONGC, Idea and Cairn posted strong to modest gains. 
 HDFC and Infosys were the top two traded stocks on the NSE along with Gujarat Pipavav Ports and <keyword id="6653" type="CITY" weightage="80" keywordseo="ICICI-bank">ICICI Bank</keyword> . All four stocks traded in the red. 
 
The trend was mixed in the broader markets with bigger indices such as CNX 100, CNX 200 and CNX 500 showing a bit of green. Modest gains were seen on CNX Nifty Junior Index as well. But the Bank Nifty, CNX Finance and the CNX PSU Banking Index remained under bear control. Meanwhile, CNX Auto, CNX Energy and CNX Media edged up strongly in trade. 
 On the <keyword id="43628" type="CITY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Bombay-stock-exchange">Bombay Stock Exchange</keyword>, the Sensex fell 59 to 25,973 points with 13 stocks gaining versus 17 that fell. Hero Motors, Cipla, Axis Bank and ITC were among top losers while Wipro, Lupin, Coal India and GAIL inched up. State Bank of India was the top traded counter on the Sensex, which exhibited low volumes in the first hour of trade. 
 
Overall, the Advance-Decline Ratio favoured the long side with 1,031 shares gaining versus 763 that fell on the Bombay Stock Exchange. 
 
And in the futures and options space, the front month Nifty contract traded flat. PTC, India Cements and GMR Infra were top gainers while Federal Bank, SAIL, Hero Motor and Ambuja Cement fell in trade. 
 
JK Cement, Gujarat Pipavav Port, GATI and BAG Films made it to the top volume buzzers list.

Creator Josh Schwartz pulled out all the stops when it came to over-the-top plot twists and will-they-won't-they love stories and triangles (and quadrangles).While attempting to find joy through nostalgic <keyword id="4578" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="entertainment">entertainment</keyword>, I've been rewatching <keyword id="17242" type="CITY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Fox">Fox</keyword>'s "The O.C." and reveling in the high-drama of it all. So imagine my surprise when I decided to also start watching Hulu's new drama series, "Normal People," which is based on a novel of the same name written by Sally Rooney.I admittedly haven't read the book yet, yet I found myself tracing parallel after parallel between two of the shows' main characters: Ryan Atwood and Connell Waldron. <h2>Both Ryan and Connell are nice jocks with similar looks and a shared love of wearing necklaces</h2><div type="image" title="Ryan Atwood The OC Fox " height="1362" width="1816" msid="75743018" hostid="261"></div>First, let's compare how remarkably similar the male leads of "The O.C." and "Normal People" are to one another.In each series, we meet a boy. This boy has shaggy, dark blonde hair and blue eyes often held in a squint, like he's trying to figure something or someone out. He's in high school, but he looks like he's 20 (probably because, well, he's played by an actor in his 20s). This boy wears a necklace. <a href="https://www.instagram.com/connellschain/?hl=en">We all love this necklace</a>. This boy is literally both Ryan Atwood and Connell Waldron.Both characters are even styled similarly in their shows for a few key scenes, like when Connell years the classic "hoodie-under-a-jacket" look that Ryan wears in the opening scenes of "The O.C." pilot. <div type="image" title="Connell Waldron Paul Mescal Hulu Normal People 1" height="1207" width="1610" msid="75743022" hostid="261"></div>And, of course, there's that necklace.In "Normal People," Connell wears a silver chain around his neck from start to finish. This chain has become a sensation, with an Instagram account (<a href="https://www.instagram.com/connellschain/?hl=en">@connellschain</a>) closing in on 100,000 followers just two weeks after the show debuted on Hulu and BBC Three at the end of April.In "The O.C.," Ryan wears a tight choker necklace for the first few episodes, too. Eventually, he ditches that particular piece of jewelry, swapping it for an iconic leather bracelet, but the choker is an integral part of his character for fans of the show. Even the "Connell's Chain" Instagram account has made references to "The O.C." In a May 13 post, the chosen caption read: "Alexa, play Phantom Planet 'California' lol jk play 'The Chain.'" As any "O.C." fan will know, the song "California" by Phantom Planet served as the title credit music for the series.Similarities between Ryan and Connell crossover into their character's backstories and personalities, too. Their storylines each start in their later high school years and kick off with an important romantic relationship blossoming.Both boys are described in their respective shows as unusually smart, and they play high school sports. The girls they fall in love with both come from substantially more privileged households. They're both shown as "shy," stumbling around social situations, often substituting a grunt or just silence in place of an actual <keyword id="6356002" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="opinion">opinion</keyword>.But it's not a typical shyness. They're both just extremely guarded, coming to life around certain close friends. In Ryan's case, his guardedness comes from a lifetime of trauma and abuse at home. In Connell's case, his discomfort in many social situations is a result of intense anxiety and inward pressures. <div type="image" title="Connell Waldron Paul Mescal Hulu Normal People 3" height="1292" width="1722" msid="75743027" hostid="261"></div>And there's extra magic in moments when they both finally seem at ease. Their smiles are doled out in small, shy bursts, like they have a limited supply of them and wants to save each one for a worthy moment of sparkle.Plus, for me, the comparison was cemented by each show playing Imogen Heap's "Hide and Seek" <a href="https://www.vulture.com/2020/05/normal-people-soundtrack-13-key-songs.html">during at least one key emotional scene</a>. If that doesn't scream early aughts drama, nothing does.<h2>But 'Normal People' takes Connell's character to a much deeper place</h2>Where "The O.C." started a generation's obsession with the shy-but-not-shy-jock trope, "Normal People" takes it to all-new heights — and depths."The O.C." starts out with Ryan's arrival to the eponymous Orange County (Newport Beach, to be precise) in Southern California. His status as an outsider is the core tension of most episodes, but Ryan is not the sole dramatic focus of the show. "The O.C." is a roller coaster of inter-family fights and multiple teen romances and lavish look at the lives of rich and powerful families of Southern California. The literal girl-next-door, Marissa Cooper, is Ryan's main love interest for the first three seasons, but he juggles several other hook-ups. We're told early on in the show that he's had plenty of sex and sexual partners by the age of 17, but almost never see that side of him in action. It's not even until the third season of the show that he even has sex with Marissa, his first great love. <div type="image" title="the oc couple" height="1000" width="1333" msid="75743031" hostid="261"></div>Ryan is also significantly more angry and violent than Connell. Though his intentions are often noble, he's very quick to throw a punch. Rewatching the series now, it's wild realizing how many times Ryan's anger issues and self-destructive behaviors get in the way of his own happiness, and how not a single adult thinks to get him more professional help. "Normal People," with its 12-episode run (and each episode coming in around the 25-minute-long mark), is a much tighter story. From start to finish, Connell and his great love, Marianne, are the sole narrative focus. The show spans several years and follows Connell and Marianne from high school to college and their on-and-off relationship.This singular focus means we get to see a much more nuanced characterization in Connell than we ever do with Ryan. His character is given the space to unfold in a more natural way, and he's all-the-more lovable for it.He and Marianne have sex for the first time in the second episode. The nearly eight-minute-long scene shows an incredible amount of care between Connell (the experienced sexual partner in the situation) and Marianne (who hadn't had sex before). It's practically a masterclass in consent and shows a tender and thoughtful side of Connell that's almost excruciatingly endearing. <div type="image" title="Connell Normal People Hulu " height="1577" width="2103" msid="75743037" hostid="261"></div>Connell may be prone to frustration in a way that echoes Ryan, but he's never violent. He's shown growing more and learning how to better communicate and process his own feelings and relationship to Marianne. The series comes to an emotional head for Connell when he falls into a deep depression, and a friend advises him to seek out therapy. (You know who definitely could have used some therapy? We get to see him guarded and around friends in school, and also stripped down (literally) and vulnerable when he's with Marianne. <h2>While 'The O.C.' moves at a lightning-fast pace, 'Normal People' gives us the granular details of one simple and heartbreaking love story </h2>It's not that McKenzie wasn't capable of a similar performance to Mescal's, but simply that "The O.C." wasn't as deep of a show. "The O.C." was my generation's introduction to soap-opera-levels of drama. Ryan didn't have time for therapy or eight-minute sex scenes, there were too many bananas storylines going on for that. The similarities between their characters, which are so apparent in the pilot episodes of both shows, start to fall away once you see how many over the top storylines were packed into "The O.C.""Normal People" was only ever about Connell and Marianne and both of their growth individually and as a couple. Watching the Hulu series, especially back-to-back with "The O.C.," is like seeing the rest of the iceberg beneath the surface of the shy-jock trope.<div type="image" title="normal people 2 hulu" height="1693" width="2257" msid="75743042" hostid="261"></div>What "Normal People" offers is an intimate and thoughtful look at the way life tends to rip your inner-self to pieces. Bears remained in control of <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Dalal+Street">Dalal Street</a> for the fourth day in a row on Thursday as traders remained sellers mainly on the private sector banking space as also on the cement, power and capital goods sectors. Axis Bank, post lacklustre second quarter earnings, was the top loser on the indices. 
 
The Nifty fell 27 points to trade at 8,145 in the first hour of trade with BHEL, Ambuja Cement, IndusInd Bank and BPCL being the top losers along with Axis Bank. Buying was observed in defensives such as Dr. Reddy's, Cipla and Lupin as also in Cairn and Vedanta. The Nifty saw 20 shares gaining compared with 30 that slipped. 
 
Axis, Dr. Reddy's and Just Dial were the top traded stocks along with JP Associates, Suzlon and Unitech on the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=National+Stock+Exchange">National Stock Exchange</a>. 
 
Broader markets were mostly weak with CNX 100, CNX 200 and CNX 500 lost at least 0.2 percent each. Bit gains, however, were seen on the mid cap and the small cap space. The space for sectoral indices was mixed with the FMCG benchmark dipping 1 percent while indices tracking the realty, auto, energy, pharma and metals space inching up. 
 
The Sensex remained weak as well, dropping 46 points to 26,993 levels. TCS, Hindustan Unilever, Sun Pharma and GAIL were among losers while HDFC, Bajaj Auto and Tata Steel showed traction. The Sensex had an advance-decline ratio of 13/17 and Axis Bank, Larsen and Dr. Reddy's were the top traded counters. 
 
Broader markets, however, were dominated by the bulls with 1,152 shares gaining compared with 703 that fell. 
 
The futures market saw nearly 65 percent of the rollovers being completed on the last day of the monthly expiry and strong buying was seen on infrastructure and fertiliser futures. UCO Bank, Oil India and SKS Micro futures were top on the gainers list while Just Dial, post earnings, Power Finance Corp and CESC futures dropped in trade. 
 
Mphasis and Heritage Foods hit fresh highs while J&amp;K Bank dropped to a new low on the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=National+Stock+Exchange">National Stock Exchange</a>.

Here's how the Markets opened today

A string of programmed sell orders pushed the <keyword id="6354813" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="nifty">Nifty</keyword> lower on Monday as algorithmic trades near strong resistance levels caused sudden panic in the market during late afternoon trades.
 

	The Nifty fell 39 points close at 8,525. A 70-point fall in the Index came in less than 18 minutes, pointing to computer-based sell orders on index heavyweights that caused this swift fall. The Nifty's Advance-Decline ratio was 12/38 with ONGC, Tata Motors, M&amp;M, Hindalco and Cairn taking the first five slots on the losing side. BHEL, Hero Motors, TCS, Maruti and Bajaj Auto were the top gainers on the Index.
 

	Profit booking continued across the board with major indices such as CNX 100, CNX 200, CNX Midcap, CNX Small Cap and CNX 500 ending with losses.
 

	
		
			The Bank Nifty fell 19 points to 18,875. The trend in other sectoral indices was bearish. CNX Energy, CNX Metals, CNX IT and CNX FMCG lost ground. 
		 
		
			On the Bombay Stock Exchange, the <keyword id="6484188" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Sensex">Sensex</keyword> dropped 135 points to close at 28,101 points. ONGC, Mahindra &amp; Mahindra, Hindalco, Tata Motors and Coal India were the top losers on the Index, whereas BHEL, Hero Motors, Maruti and GAIL edged up in trade. The Advance-Decline Ratio stood at a negative 9/21 on the Sensex on which Tata Motors was the top traded counter worth 61.3 crore rupees.
		 
		
			
				
					Bears dominated the wider market for the third day running with just 1,422 stocks gaining ground versus 1,531 fell below friday's closing prices.
				 
				
					The trend remained bearish in the derivatives space with Nifty Futures closing just a shade above 8,520 points. Fertiliser, Pharma and Realty were the only 3 sectors showing bit gains whereas major losses were seen on Infrastructure, Cement and Power spaces. The Advance-Decline Ratio favoured the bears with a ratio of 35/126 in the futures and Options market. 
				 
				
					
						Traders celebrated strong earnings from Chennai Petroleum, Chambal Fertilisers, Marksans Pharma and Wockhardt. But they were disappointed with UCO Bank, IL&amp;FS Transportation and J&amp;K Bank.
